Perhaps it is simply the stage I’m at in my life, but I have developed a stronger desire than ever to do things differently, to seek out the unexpected and relish the unpredictable. That renewed spirit of adventure flows through this issue of your Endless Vacation. The Publications team took a good look at several destinations that are well known for a particular holiday activity and, talking to our travel writers, we discovered that there is much more to enjoy in those places than you might think. We were surprised by the amazing possibilities offered by the Scandinavian countries as idyllic summer retreats. For example, did you know that Denmark has over 4,350 miles of beautiful shoreline? The country’s popular holiday island of Bornholm has 27 pretty harbours dotted along its coastline to potter around before going to relax on the sandy shores of one of the island’s many sparkling lakes. Warm days and balmy nights are to be enjoyed in Finland if you holiday on the south-western tip that curls around Turku, where beaches, white sails and seaside towns abound. The area also attracts an international summer jazz festival! While the Swedish ‘Capri’ on the glorious Bohuslän coastline has more than its share of picturesque fishing villages and stretches of golden sand. Check out page 47 to find out what other surprises a Scandinavian summer has in store. If you think about the Alps, you are probably thinking ski slopes. And yes, you can ski in the summertime there. But think again, as the joys of the Alps go deeper than snow in the summer months. As you will see on page 18, the appeal of holidaying in the Austrian, French and Swiss Alps includes gentle walks through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, sensory adventures with extraordinary dining experiences and soothing spas. We explore Florida’s flipside with a tour of the history, beaches and shopping at Daytona, home of the iconic racing car events, on page 42, while we put safaris aside to go beachside in Kenya on page 24. And, as Neil Cowdy proves on page 50, there is no better way of uncovering hidden holiday gems than by using RCI membership. For those of our members who feel they could be getting more from their membership, three of our members share their RCI.com search filter secrets that help them to get away on fabulous holidays on page 36. With lots of holiday choice and so many ways to learn how to get the best from RCI membership, I wish you all very happy holiday planning as the days close in so make your next RCI getaway the brightest spot on your winter horizon!

Welcome I hope your summer was filled with sunshine and happy holiday memories – hopefully with RCI! We enjoyed our family break, but as usual it was over too soon and we’re already thinking about the next one. The best holidays of our lives

Photo: Previous page: Mark Coster/Joanna Moore; this page: shutterstock

A guarantee of quality “RCI makes holidaying such a pleasure. My family and I have had some of our most memorable experiences at RCI affiliated resorts, especially at Sunset Beach Resort (1469) in Malaga, Spain, where everything was so professional and efficient, from the booking desk on. “I believe in going on a holiday once a year, but want a destination that is out of this world – not an easy task – but with RCI several locations are up for grabs making it so much easier to organise. I’ve recommended many of my friends to sign up and they have done so.” – Prakash Venkatakrishnan, Dubai, UAE. RCI Member for 5 years.

We want to hear from you! We love to hear your top tips and Exchange Holiday experiences with RCI. Please email us at EV@rci.com or write to us via the address on page 9. Any letters or top tip published in the magazine will win an RCI Goody Bag.* Please include your membership ID, address and phone number. We also welcome your photos, ideally in jpeg format via email, as Endless Vacation cannot be held responsible for lost or damaged photos or slides. We reserve the right to edit submissions. *See enclosed insert for RCI Goody Bag details.

RCI Exchange Holidays are unforgettable. We have enjoyed the best family holidays of our lives ever since buying our timeshare week in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece. We have visited our home resort and exchanged to many resorts of similar quality, visiting destinations such as Corfu, Rhodes, Heraklion (Koutouloufari), Rethymnon, Paros, Hydra, Cyprus and more. The most beautiful holidays and the ones we will never forget were at Classical Vacation Club at Kos Imperial (7741) which we would like to visit again sometime – it is such a nice resort with exotic beauty and endless pools! – Penelope Papakonstantopoulou Varsou, Athens, Greece. RCI Member for 20 years.

Star Top Tip Congratulations to Mark and Caroline Longman from Ceredigion in Wales, who have won a £50 Marks & Spencer gift voucher for submitting the latest top tip. The couple, who have been RCI members for 13 years, have found a great way to save time on RCI searches. They say: “We set up saved searches at the start of the year to coincide with school holidays. We set the date and have an idea on countries to visit. It’s an easy one-click to do, and we can even set up and save favourite resort search criteria. It saves time and allows us to undertake searches regularly and quickly.”

here to help: Mark Caldicott is the driving force behind the TATOC Helpline.

As a timeshare owner you now have a greater say in the running of your resort, as well as the industry, thanks to UK leading consumer association, TATOC. The Timeshare Association (for timeshare owners and committees) or TATOC for short, has a mission: ‘To safeguard and enhance the timeshare holiday experience for existing and prospective users and to be the voice of owners.’ And it is delivering. Formed in 1989, TATOC is run by timeshare owners for timeshare owners and today is a powerful organisation, with 92 resort members throughout Europe, representing thousands of timeshare families. It has established a range of initiatives to fulfil that mission, including a Resort Accreditation Scheme based on the provision of excellent timeshare holiday

experiences, and Timeshare Codes of Conduct and Practice that its members must adhere to. A highlight achievement was the launch of a Consumer Helpline in 2008, which now receives more than 45,000 calls and emails every year. It has helped consumers to either recover, or avoid losing, around £5 million in that time. The good news is that complaints account for only three per cent of calls – the majority are simply enquiries for guidance on how to use timeshare ownership. An increasing number of calls are about resale companies and TATOC has launched a ‘Don’t deal with cold callers’ campaign to combat fraudulent companies operating in this area. Mark Caldicott, TATOC’s Consumer Helpline Manager, said: “If owners want general advice and a list of reputable resale companies they should call us or visit the website for details of companies which have committed to TATOC’s consumerfocused Resale Code of Practice and have been examined to ensure compliance.” The organisation regularly advises the European Parliament and the UK Government on industry matters, as well as working with the police, solicitors, Trading Standards, Citizen’s Advice Bureaux and banks in consumer matters. Harry Taylor, TATOC’s Chief Executive, said: “We want to safeguard the quality of the timeshare ownership experience and the future of the industry by developing strong working relationships with all the parties involved – individual owners, owners’ committees, developers, management, exchange companies and more.” TATOC’s annual conference uniquely brings all these parties together in the same room. RCI maintains a strong presence at the event, and has a long-standing

relationship with TATOC, sponsoring its conferences and quarterly member magazine Sharetime, which is packed with news, stories and information for timeshare owners. Harry added: “Our remit is actually quite simple. We want to ensure that timeshare evolves to meet the changing needs of current and future owners and continues to provide a modern, high-quality, cost-effective, holiday experience.” To find out more about timeshare ownership and to join TATOC visit tatoc.co.uk or email info@tatoc.co.uk Call TATOC Consumer Helpline on 0845 230 2430

B r a n d n e w p l ac e s So far this year we’ve added 51 new affiliated resorts to our exchange network to widen your holiday horizons. The latest resort to join the RCI network is on the island of Tenerife. Royal Sun Resort (D013) enjoys a fabulous clifftop location with panoramic views over the sea, marina and tranquil village of Los Gigantes. The resort benefits from designerfurnished apartments, a range of on-site restaurants and an array of facilities. The resort’s 120 modern and spacious apartments enjoy wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the local areas of Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago. You can choose from studio, one-, two- and threebedroom apartments, all having a balcony or terrace with sunbeds.

A different island experience is on offer at Tresco (0591), which is located on the island of the same name, 28 miles south west of Land’s End in Cornwall. Accessible by plane or ferry, the tiny family-owned island measures only about two and a half miles long by a mile wide at its broadest point. Only 150 people live on the island, golf buggies and service vehicles are the only traffic, and there is no mobile signal. You are getting back to nature in this destination, but this RCI affiliated resort offers plenty of contemporary luxury too in its new Sea Garden Cottages, which are now available to RCI members.

Royal Sun Resort

Rated 9.5 out of 10 by The Times newspaper and with a 5-Star Gold Award from Visit England, the cottages have stunning sea views. The accommodation features a double bedroom, lounge and kitchen, with balconies or terraces.

Sunny Coast Resort and Spa

N e w- lo o k s pac e s Sunny Coast Resort and Spa (1201) in Malta is currently undergoing a refurbishment. Five floors of apartments, located in the popular town of Qawra just minutes from the sandy beach, have been renovated in the past year, with the addition of air-conditioning units and upgraded bathrooms. A number of enhancements have also been made to the lobby and reception areas, as well as improved wheelchair access and the addition of new disability accessible bathrooms. David Jaccarini, the resort’s General Manager, said: “Owners feel proud that the resort invests year after year to keep the property up to date and ensure that it keeps its place as one of Malta’s top destinations.” External management company, Resort Solutions Limited (RSL) manages a number of properties across Europe and has upgraded several in the past year. Club Le Bristol (2528), in the popular winter sport destination of Isola 2000 in the French Alps, has seen a €48,000 improvement programme. All units at the chalet-style property have new furnishings and redecoration throughout. Closer to home, the first phase of a refresh of four ‘A’ frame lodges at Lakeview Country Club (3908) was completed in February giving them new furnishings. RSL Account Manager, Vicky DuBois-Sandy said: “We wanted to create a high-quality, contemporary look – the owners are thrilled.” Club Las Calas (1448) in Lanzarote, has updated its recreational areas and introduced two new restaurants – one for fine dining and another offering live entertainment. Vicky added: “We recognised the need to offer as much choice as possible and these new outlets have been well received, not least because the work, which cost €340,000, was done at no additional cost to owners.”

Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta (3544) Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico

Set on the beaches of Banderas Bay, this 348-room all-inclusive resort was completely remodelled. Besides the rock memorabilia, it enjoys Pacific Coast views and has four à la carte restaurants, an international buffet, relaxing bars, pools, lounges and more.

Hard Rock Hotel Cancún (2065) Cancún, Mexico

This 601-room resort is in the heart of Cancún’s hotel zone and has been fully remodelled. MOUNTAIN HIGH: The stunning Matterhorn.

E n d l e s s vac at i o n 1 9

T

he Alps are just as amazing in the summer months as they are in the snows of winter. The greens of the valleys and colourful spread of meadow flowers is just as enticing as anything the Mediterranean has to offer, and it comes with the warmth of the summer sun.

But unlike the Romans, who had to hike over the mountains, you can take the cable car up to the Gemmi Pass. From 7,709 ft up, explore an array of easy walks, including a two-hour stroll around the clear, glacier-fed Daubensee Lake. Look out for some unusual birds, such as bearded vultures and black alpine choughs.

Stunning Switzerland With the Matterhorn and 50 more peaks topping 13,123 ft, the mainly Frenchspeaking Valais canton along the Rhône Valley is known for its rugged landscape. A good holiday is all about refreshing the soul as well as the body, and nowhere does it better than Leukerbad. Here, 4,593 ft above sea level, think clean air and sunshine, stunning mountain views and hot mineral springs dating back to Roman times.

At the Leukerbad Therme, with its panorama of mountains and meadows, unwind in the outdoor pool in 36°C water.

Chill out in one of Leukerbad’s many pools, fed by natural springs. At the Leukerbad Therme, with its panorama of mountains and meadows, unwind in the outdoor pool in 36°C water, then enjoy a

relaxing shoulder massage under a jet of hot water. Healthy exercise demands healthy food, and the Valais is known for its organic produce: butter, cheeses and bread, air-dried beef and mountain lamb. Enjoy them with local wines at the Weidstübli (weidstuebli.ch), a cheerful chalet-like restaurant serving traditional dishes, a 30-minute walk from the town centre. By contrast, little Champoussin in the Val d’Illiez is on the edge of one of Europe’s biggest ski resorts. In summer, at 5,183 ft, the view is filled by the 3,257 ft Dents-du-Midi. These jagged peaks cut into the azure sky, where paragliders love to frolic. On the ground, walking is a pleasure along 60 miles of marked trails. Few sounds break the peace, only the deep clang of cow bells or the piercing whistle of a marmot or mountain

Fascinating France There could hardly be two French Alpine resorts more different than Megève and Val d’Isère. Though it was skiing that put both on the map, Megève is relatively low at 1,683 ft above sea level, while Val d’Isère, 466 ft higher, sits at the foot of a high mountain. With its cobbled streets and trafficfree centre, Megève retains a village atmosphere, yet is the epitome of chic. Smart shops such as Hermès are neighbours to working farms. Established by Baroness Noémie de Rothschild as a French St. Moritz, the town attracted the rich and famous. Visitors included Sacha Distel, Charles

Azanavour and Jeanne Moreau. The writer, artist and filmmaker Jean Cocteau dubbed the resort “the 21st arrondissement of Paris”.

Megève offers a range of walking routes, from the short – 1 hour 15 minutes taking in eight fountains and two tumbling streams to a 5 hour 30 minute hike up through the hamlets of Coin and Ridgeland to the Jaillet Pass for great views over the Mont Blanc range and the village. There’s a golf course, fishing in the Lac de Javen (permits from the Tourist Office) and swimming in a lake -

the Plein d’Eau at Combloux. Take the Rochbrune gondola lift and descend past a series of information boards with details on wildlife such as marmot and eagles. From 9 July to 25 August guided walks are available on which you will learn more about conservation in the area. Val d’Isère has a more rugged appeal. It was just a small village, isolated in winter by heavy snows, until the road over the pass - the Col d’Iseran - was built in 1937. The road opened access to its ski slopes which, combined with those of neighbouring Tignes, are arguably the world’s finest. From 8 June to 14 July you can ski on the Pissaillas glacier. Amazing Austria There are so many reasons to visit Zell am See in the Austrian Alps and the neighbouring town of Kaprun during the summer months. It’s a region of peerless mountain and lakeside views and home to some of the most unusual festivals in Europe. Zell am See sits on the edge of Lake Zell – a 2.5 mile wide lake providing an array of activities, including boat trips

and fishing. There are even picturesque lakeside beaches where locals and visitors alike bask in the warm summer temperatures while looking out upon some of the prettiest landscapes in the world. A perfect contrast to this scene can be found high up on Zell am See’s mountains where a high altitude trail on the Schmitten gives hikers a seemingly endless view of the region’s spectacular peaks. The Schmitten is a visitorfriendly mountain, with well paved

and signposted pathways, with many benches along the way providing great opportunities to stop and take in the views and fresh mountain air. The warmer months aren’t for skiers of course, unless you visit the Kitzsteinhorn glacier just above the small town of Kaprun, a 20 minute drive or bus ride from Zell am See. Here the cool temperatures at 9,842 ft allow for skiing in June and July. But Kitzsteinhorn has many other attractions – it’s latest, Peakworld 3000 (lift passes from €32.50) and the National Park Gallery, gives visitors a chance to walk through the centre of a glacier, learning about its structure from interactive exhibits. The National Park Gallery at the end of the exhibition provides spectacular views of 300 mountain peaks that rise above 9,000 ft. There are also nature hikes of the Hohe Tauern National Park which spreads out below, home to an array of endangered birds and small mammals. At ground level, close to Kaprun, Tauern Spa, is an oasis of spa calm with day packages to its 12 swimming pools and 13 steam rooms and saunas (prices start at €18). For a relaxing holiday in the warm summer sun, a mountain high can be a refreshing alternative to the traditional beach destinations.

in the mornings from 8am until noon depending on snow conditions and whether the Col d’Iseran is open. Passes cost approximately €25 a day or, for a few euros more you can add a bus ticket to your pass. Summertime also sees the adventurous visitor mountain biking, hiking or walking through the magnificent Vanoise National Park, haunt of alpine ibex and some 4,000 chamois. To relax after a day of activities, take time out at the Centre Aquasportif where you can swim in a choice of pools, relax in a sauna, hammam, whirlpool - or book a massage.

f you are considering Kenya as a holiday destination and thinking safaris – then think again. Though the heartland of safaris, Kenya surprises with its array of amazing holiday activities, as well as perfect places to take some time out to kick back and relax. On the beach A seemingly endless ribbon of golden sand braids the edge of the gleaming blue waters along the Kenyan coast. Its beaches can be patrolled by beach boys and girls wanting to sell you pretty much anything and everything – and I mean everything… If you take time to talk to some of them, you will glean interesting insights into the vibrant local culture. The beaches are incredibly beautiful and walking on them can be a real 24 Au t u m n / w i n t e r 2 0 1 3

adventure. At Kikambala when the tide retreats it leaves a myriad of extraordinary sea creatures, from spiny sea urchins to starfish, in its wake. At Malindi, the cafés, bars and restaurants crowd down to the sand providing a buzz of activity with beach vendors, bicycles and the odd camel, although compared to many popular European beaches, Kenyan beaches are luxuriously deserted. Watamu is probably the finest of them all, its powdery white sand, palm trees and turquoise waters ranking it among the most beautiful in the world as a true tropical paradise. separate marine reserves (kws.org) protect the coral reefs at Mombasa, Malindi and Watamu. They provide fabulous opportunities for both snorkelling and diving. Watamu is famous for its coral banks, with more than 150 species of hard and soft corals and over 1,000 species of reef fish. Even ‘learner’ snorkellers can admire them. At low tide you can walk out to the shallowest reefs, while small boats take snorkellers out to explore. Though don’t forget to take sunscreen and a t-shirt, as it is easy to forget the sun on your back when captivated by the underwater scenes. Another popular pastime is game fishing, with a catch likely to include tuna, sharks, sailfish, kingfish, barracuda and marlin. Kenya became a British colony and time spent wandering the old town of Mombasa, the ruins of the Swahili city of Gedi near Malindi, and the old slave town of Jambo la Mtwana will give you a glimpse of the trappings of old colonialism. In Nyali, Mamba Village (mambavillage.com) is East Africa’s largest crocodile farm with plenty of other entertainment on offer, from horse and camel riding to cinema and cabaret. You can meet the beasts and learn all about them. There is also another crocodile and snake farm at Malindi. Haller Park (lafarge.co.ke/wps/ portal/ke), just north of Mombasa, is an inspirational wildlife park and botanical garden that has been created

from an old limestone cement works. It makes a wonderful afternoon’s outing with masses to see, from peacocks and giant tortoises to snakes, crocodiles, waterbuck and hippos – and it has a real story to tell. In Africa much of the sightseeing is about nature. Just north of Malindi, hike up to the Marafa Depression, a series of dramatic sandstone gorges and gullies known locally as Hell’s Kitchen. Also near Malindi and Watamu, Mida Creek is one of several magnificent places for birdwatching, where local coastal birds are joined by migrants. You can even hire a canoe to paddle through the mangrove swamps – but use plenty of insect repellent. The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest (kws.org/parks/parks_reserves) is a lush, mysterious world with superb bird and butterfly life, plus masses of wild flowers and trees. With 52 species of mammal there are opportunities to spot all sorts of animals, from shy bushbuck to forest elephants. Mombasa Old Town A visit to Mombasa’s Old Town is definitely worthwhile, but it is probably worth going in a group and hiring a guide. There are plaques up on various houses giving information, but a knowledgeable guide will add huge amounts of interesting detail about this ancient town, with its Arabic, Portuguese and British history. The centrepiece is the formidable Fort

Jesus, but look for the extraordinary architectural details on smaller houses, from carved window and door frames to elaborately sculpted door knockers. Shops can be expensive here but if you are prepared to haggle there are some wonderful finds.

Watamu is probably the finest of them all [beaches], its powdery white sand, palm trees and turquoise waters ranking it among the most beautiful in the world as a true tropical paradise. Safari adventure If you want to go on safari, it will mean doing an overnighter – or more likely three days. The nearest game parks are on the south coast – the Shimba Hills National Reserve and the communityrun Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary (elephantmwaluganje.com) together form the Shimba Hills Ecosystem. This is a great place to see elephants and leopards but it is not Big Five country. To have a chance of seeing the Big Five – elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino – you need to go inland. Plenty of operators offer three-day safaris to Tsavo and Amboseli, the nearest parks, about five hours’ drive away.

Getting there and around Direct charter flights with Thomson. Airlines include Kenya, Air France, KLM, Ethiopian, Turkish, Qatar, and Lufthansa. Distances from Mombasa airport to resorts: Mombasa 8 miles; Kikambala 20 miles; Watamu 74 miles; Malindi 80 miles. There are plenty of local buses, matatus taxis and airport shuttles to resorts. Within the towns, tuk-tuks are ideal for short journeys. GIRAFFES AND SCARVES: Giraffe in Shimba Hills National Reserve, Beach Vendor in North Mombasa

Worlds

of delight

The real beauty of the Canary Islands is in the surprising variety of family holiday activities that can be enjoyed – in year-round sunshine – on the four main islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. B Y J E A N E TT E PA R K I N

T

here’s something quite special about the Canary Islands. Sunshine and friendly Spanish smiles greet you as you arrive on one of the holiday islands that make up this enchanting archipelago, which sits in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. From the cool blues of the ocean that lap onto beaches of golden, white and black sands, to the heights of the magical volcanoes – there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this picturesque part of the world. You can hit the beaches, swimming and snorkelling in warm waters, meander in the sand dunes or clamber aboard boats to see frolicking dolphins. The water parks are perfect for a splashing good time, while gentle sea breezes keep the islands from getting too hot and create the perfect climate for stretching out under the sun. Island hopping is a great way to see the best of the Canaries. Connections between near-neighbours Lanzarote and Fuerteventura make this especially easy, with frequent ferries connecting the two islands and the sailing time being less than half an hour. Consider

day trips between the islands or book a two-centre holiday to explore two very different worlds. The temptations of Tenerife Take a new look at Tenerife, the most popular holiday hotspot in the Canaries. Crowned by the incredible Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, and ringed by natural black sand beaches, Tenerife offers plenty to do for all ages. Loro Parque is one of the premier attractions of the island

(loroparque.com). From a parrot paradise, the park has grown into a haven for wildlife, with an impressive collection of marine mammals. Watch sea lions kiss, see dolphins and whales showing off, and find Nemo the clownfish in the incredible aquarium, where everyone will be wowed by the shark tunnel. Little ones will love to see the penguins at play. The waters off Tenerife are the best on the planet for watching the magnificent dolphins and whales, up

close in their natural environment, as various species of whale and dolphin make annual migrations past the island. The south coast provides the finest opportunities for whale and dolphin spotting, though you can hop aboard an organised tour at your nearest harbour to journey to the best spots. Screams of delight will let you know you are nearing Siam Park’s water slides and wave pools (siampark.net). The park makes for a perfect family day out. In contrast, enjoy the complete peace of a family canter on horseback across the captivating island landscape of hills and beaches.

The island features stunning beaches of golden and white sands, family-friendly attractions and a wonderfully creative and cosmopolitan air. And, when you’ve done all of that, make a beeline for the exciting capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. For a stress-free way to see the highlights of this buzzing city, which is backed by mountains and met by the ocean, book tickets aboard the ‘hop-on hop-off’ sightseeing bus. A reasonably-priced 24-hour ticket allows you easy access to the best of the city, including the 3 0 Au t u m n / w i n t e r 2 0 1 3

bustling Ramblas and the intoxicating sights, sounds, and smells of the African market. For a truly unique glimpse into local life in this city, travel in February or March at the start of Lent to see the colours of the annual carnival explode onto the streets. You’ll soon discover why this party town is twinned with Brazil’s Rio – host of the world’s biggest and best carnival. Out of this world in Lanzarote Laidback Lanzarote has all the ingredients for a perfect family break. Running at a more relaxed pace than Tenerife, the unique lunar-like landscape is the ideal setting to let imaginations – both young and old – run wild and free. The island features stunning beaches of golden and white sands, familyfriendly attractions and a wonderfully creative and cosmopolitan air. It’s an idyllic island for fun in the sun during the day, with evenings spent wining and dining under a canopy of stars. Lanzarote’s beaches are worthy of any postcard. From tiny coves washed by aquamarine waters, to huge ribbons of sand and rolling seas that are ideal for water sports, Lanzarote caters for all beach lovers. The faultless sheltered bays of Papagayo in the south east, including Papagayo Beach itself, have

protected status and are accessed via coastal pathways from Playa Blanca. The crystal-clear lagoon of Caleton Blanco, near Orzola in the north, is surrounded by white sands and rocky shelters, and is perfect for a quiet paddle. Famara Beach, on the wilder west coast, is vast and frequented by surfers, kite surfers, windsurfers, and picnicking families. The moon-like scenery around Timanfaya National Park was carved out by fiery volcanoes creating the Fire Mountains within the park. Visit as part of a day tour or make your own way to the park, where you can take a guided coach tour around the volcanoes – no other vehicles are permitted to travel this windy one-way route through the heart of this entrancing terrain. The spurting geysers and the giant rocky barbecue that harnesses the sizzling heat of the earth will amaze. To cool down, head underwater for a unique look at Lanzarote – and you don’t even have to get wet. Submarine Safaris (submarinesafaris.com) operate from the beautiful marina at Puerto Calero, which is peppered with designer shops if the ladies want to stay ashore and splash the cash. Take a seat at a viewing hole and watch out for sea creatures as the submarine dives deep down into the ocean.

Outdoor adventure in Fuerteventura Wild, windy, and wonderful: Fuerteventura is the ideal destination if your family likes to get active in the great outdoors. An Atlantic breeze makes the island of Fuerteventura a hotspot for every kind of surfer, and a great place for beginners to get to grips with these exhilarating sports. The second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is the least populated and great swathes of land are given over to nature and peaceful solitude. But hit the beaches and you and your family can enjoy a thrilling ride out on the waves. There are many surf schools dotted around the island and good conditions can be found all around its shoreline so you are never far from an opportunity to hit the surf. Of course, the beaches of Fuerteventura are not the sole preserve of adrenaline seekers. Head to Corralejo to discover mile upon mile of fine, creamy sands and rolling dunes in the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo. Masses of open space provide playgrounds for children to run around, roll down the dunes, and splash about in the alluring azure waters. Wind breaks are a good investment as the breeze can whip up the sand.

6

ISLAND ROUND-UP: 1. Cooking over the volcano in Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote. 2. Palmitos Park, Gran Canaria. 3. Geyser at Timanfaya. 4. Surfing school in Corralejo, Fuerteventura. 5. Caves at Barranco de Guayadeque, Gran Canaria. 6. Sand dunes of Maspalomas. 7. Dolphin show at Palmitos Park, Lanzarote. 8. Windsurfing at beach near Corralejo, Fuerteventura.

Baku Water Park comes without the sea breeze (bakufuerteventura.com). Also in the port town of Corralejo, this water park is full of slides and rides calling on varying degrees of bravery. The many entertainments are complemented by pleasant areas in which to picnic, relax and simply soak up the sun. Gran Canaria – the jewel in the Canarian crown If the Canary Islands were to crown a beauty queen, Gran Canaria might just bag the title. The island is blessed with natural splendour and a diversity of landscapes not seen elsewhere in the archipelago. From forests of pine and banana plantations that cling to mountainsides, to the undulating sea of sand dunes at Maspalomas, Gran Canaria offers a bevy of beauties worthy of exploration during your holiday. Many families travel in spring, during the Easter and May school holidays, when the island is at its most naturally magnificent with temperatures in the early twenties. Have hours of fun in the sun in the Maspalomas dunes (Las Dunas de Maspalomas). Located in the south of this roughly-round island, the dunes roll away as far as the eye can see and provide ample space for adventure.

8

Wedged between two lively resorts, the peace and quiet of the dunes is an ideal retreat from the bright lights of the bars and restaurants. Other beaches worth discovering are Amadores, near the resort of Puerto Rico. It’s a man-made beach with sand as soft as flour and as white as sugar. Las Canteras, the city beach in Las Palmas, is a sheltered and pleasant spot in which to spend some time. Nature lovers will adore Palmitos Park (palmitospark.es) in Maspalomas. While the park hosts a range of wildlife, dolphins steal the show every time. Book tickets online in advance to save money, especially if your party fancies a day at nearby water park Aqualand, as you can save even more by buying a combined ticket. While the geological history of the Canary Islands is known and celebrated, many visitors fail to discover the fascinating history and heritage of the Guanche – the aboriginal people who lived on the islands before the Spanish. Visit Mundo Aborigen to see how the Guanche lived, while the gorgeous valley of Barranco de Guayadeque can be explored, wearing walking shoes, to view the caves the ancient peoples called home.

Historic Fiction

Eden Falls Set between the lush coast of Jamaica, the whirl of London society and the beauty of Yorkshire, Eden Falls is an utterly engrossing slice of historical fiction. In 1909 Jamaica, Millionaire Silas Whittam is struggling to bring his dream of a luxury hotel to life. He’s relieved when his sister, Eve, arrives - basking in the success of her Yorkshire pies and puddings business. But as Eve befriends the staff, secrets hidden by Silas begin to emerge. Back in England, the Earl and Countess of Netherwood try to hide their empty marriage amidst the whirlwind of the London social season; while the Earl’s sufragette sister, Lady Henrietta, could disgrace them all. And for new Labour MP Amos Sykes, times are tough – especially with his wife decorating the homes of the very aristocrats he would like to see ruined. With epic scope and intimate characterisation, Eden Falls is perfect for readers of Kate Morton and Rachel Hore. Paperback available now. Published by Sphere, RRP £7.99. Available as an eBook.

and you will find… … your favourite holiday activities in exciting destinations you may never have thought of visiting. Three of our members tell us why using the search filters on RCI.com is the best way to get on holiday.

T

ime is in short supply in my life and, with little time to plan, by using the RCI.com search filters I get to the holiday I want really quickly,” says Rosemary Hutcheson, a former Dentist and now Clinical Dental Director for Aberdeen. She and her husband, Gordon, have been RCI members for 10 years and own at Hilton Craigendarroch (1003) in Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, Scotland. However, since moving home close to the resort, Rosemary says she is glad she and Gordon have the RCI exchange option. “Our search priorities are Golf; Start Date and RCI Gold Crown awards, though I do use quite a few others. The RCI search filter function is self-explanatory and really very simple to use.” Favourite time saver Knowing that resort and unit availability fluctuates, Rosemary recognises the importance of regular searches and the new filters assist in that. She explained:

We have discovered some fabulous new places using the filters to find golf locations. – R o s em a ry H u tc h e s o n

3 6 Au t u m n / w i n t e r 2 0 1 3

“If I really want a particular holiday and departure time, I narrow down our requirements using the search filters and save all that search criteria in ‘My Favourites’ so I can revisit my searches without having to input the detail again and again. It allows me to check frequently to catch inventory as it comes into the RCI system.” The search filter has also been a gateway to destination discovery for the couple, opening up a world of new holiday experiences. “We like the fact the search filters come up with suggestions of places where you can enjoy the holiday activities you want in new and exciting places. “We have discovered some fabulous new places using the filters to find golf locations. We visited Florida in March on an idea from the RCI.com search facility. We are keen golfers and the courses in Florida were excellent and not too crowded. The search facility led us to our best holiday ever – this time to South Africa where our time was split between our golf, safari, and so many other things. It was fantastic and not all about the golf! “We are now booked to visit Portugal – a first for me – with

stays at Four Seasons Vilamoura (2062), and Hotel Ap. Vila Gale Ampalius (2939), also in Vilamoura, in March next year.” Not what it seems Dr Glenys Hart and her husband Dr Douglas Hart of Reading have been RCI members for more than 30 years. One of their favourite search criteria is

TREASURE TROVE OF HOLIDAYS: 1. Glenys and Douglas Hart cleverly use the ‘Beach’ search filter – but to find accommodation on flat ground rather than golden sands. 2. ‘Ski’ is the favourite RCI holiday search filter for the McGregor family, pictured in Schladming, Austria. (From right) Stephen, eight year old Max, wife Rachael and seven year old Pippa. 3. Rosemary and Gordon Hutcheson enjoying their golf holiday in Florida, found using the RCI online search filters. The RCI ‘Golf’ holiday search filter has taken the couple to South Africa, Cyprus, Sri Lanka, Arizona, Scotland, Tenerife and Portugal.

the Beach filter – but not because they want to stretch out on the sand all day. A University Lecturer and Educational Consultant with an IT communications background, Glenys is accustomed to making IT work for her, as she explains: “I often use the Beach search filter because we prefer a location on the flat and if you get accommodation by a beach you know you’re not going to end up in the hills somewhere. “We’ve used the RCI.com search facility for some time and don’t know why members wouldn’t use it. It is easy to use and once you realise what’s on RCI.com you appreciate the choice and possibilities open to you and you are assured the holiday that ticks all your boxes.” Glenys has some top tips for getting the best out of the RCI.com search filters. “When doing multiple searches and saving them, it is important to remember what filters are on – and to take them off when refreshing your search,” she says. “Use the maps, as they tell you how many resorts are available to you for each destination initially, and then drill down to the Holiday Types filter for numbers of resorts available for each activity – you’ll be pleasantly surprised. “The Check-In Day filter is useful for us as we are flexible in our travel times and dates so if we can book to check in on, say, a Tuesday, the flights will be less expensive. And always look at the RCI member reviews and the videos on site, where available, for some good insight into the experience at that resort and destination.” 3 8 Au t u m n / w i n t e r 2 0 1 3

Special requirements With two small children and a passion for skiing holidays, the McGregor family have a lot of non-negotiables in their holiday planning, such as a two-bed apartment on a ski resort with availability during half-term. The family moved to Munich in Germany two years ago with Stephen’s job, which is when they began skiing together. As Vice-President of a German-based company, Stephen’s demanding work schedule and the children’s school holidays can restrict travel times. “With such a very small window of opportunity to travel and wanting ski holidays, as we all ski and have the Alps on our doorstep now, we haven’t got as much choice as a couple wanting a beach holiday at any time of year,” said Stephen. “I’ve been using the RCI.com search filters for about four years now and have

noticed the improvements in that time. Now I can search so efficiently, I think I may as well crack on with it myself rather than ring RCI. Because my wife, Rachael, and I have to be so very specific in what we look for in a holiday it is a tremendous help to be able to narrow down your search. Importantly, the other members’ feedback helps to manage expectations. For example, if a resort is miles away from anywhere, with no restaurants or attractions nearby and you need to rely on car hire, you really need to think about those things, especially with young children to consider.” Stephen and Rachael have been members since 2004, but having parents who are also RCI members, Stephen has a good appreciation of the very different holiday preferences. “We have enjoyed holidays together with RCI, sharing accommodation and having two separate units in one location, with the added bonus of Grandma and Grandpa’s babysitting services!” he adds. “We love our timeshare. We bought it wanting extra space and flexibility – even to sit down to a plate of beans on toast when the children aren’t up for another restaurant! It is a real home from home. “More than that, it is an adventure and has taken us to so many new and fabulous places. We enjoyed a ski holiday in Hinterzarten in the Black Forest, which was beautiful. We hadn’t even realised the area had skiable mountains – and the RCI search filter flagged it up to us.” And the next skiing holiday adventure for the McGregor family will be in Switzerland, staying at Les Naturelles (4804), close to the Alpine village of Leukerbad.

A Maltese Memoir A picture is worth a thousand words, but memories are priceless. Lorraine Karabin of the RCI Publications team discovers the history, culture and charm of Malta in winter…

No clockwatching required Following a warm welcome from reception, within ten minutes we were on our balcony marvelling at the sea views. After the unpacking ritual, we took a leisurely stroll into Qawra Bay passing numerous shops, hotels and restaurants along the way. Stopping for refreshments in a rather quaint little café with seating overlooking the beautiful bay allowed us a moment to relax, relieved to abandon the stress of daily 4 0 Au t u m n / w i n t e r 2 0 1 3

life and watch the world go by. No clockwatching required. Insider Eats That evening we decided we would experience Qawra by night, venturing out for dinner and drinks. At Birmingham airport we were fortunate to receive some insider tips from a British expat. He told us to visit Ruben’s Drive In (rubensdrivein.com) and try the steak. We knew his tip must be a good one, with every table occupied by locals – always a good sign, so be sure to pre-book. From the prompt appearance of our ‘Seafood Sharer’ which was surprisingly large and would have been plenty for a main, to the succulent steak and salmon mains, we couldn’t have asked for better service or food. Variety of Valletta We felt the need to explore our inner Phileas Fogg, so we hopped on a bus

(Day Ticket €2.60). Although they have decommissioned the iconic Maltese buses affectionately nicknamed ‘boneshakers’, it was still an experience to just stop off wherever we wanted. And conveniently, that brought us into the city of Valletta where we were

After much deliberation we selected the Mediterranean gem that is Malta, a yearround holiday hotspot..

drew many locals outdoors to bask in the sun while having lunch. Stop for refreshments in the square and admire the original Maltese sandstone architecture and brightly painted windows. Harbour highlights Sauntering past the stores, and along Merchant’s Street, where stall holders sell their local wares, the street winds around to reveal the historically significant and visual gem that is the Grand Harbour. An idyllic spot is the Siege Bell Memorial and bronze statue which were built to commemorate the award of the George Cross to Malta in 1992 and as a memorial to the 7,000 that died in the siege. A perfect moment to observe the quietness and reflect. Continue along the Barriera Wharf and the road veers steeply upwards off to the right taking you through the

Upper Barrakka Gardens. A word of warning, this has steep steps to climb so you may wish to take a 23-second journey in the Upper Barrakka Lift! Alternatively take a Captain Morgan Harbour Cruise to explore (€16 adult, €13 child, captainmorgan.com.mt). Boarding at Sliema, this is the perfect way to discover Malta’s past with a detailed commentary as you cruise around the Marsamxetto and Grand Harbours. Safe to say after spending a week here, we didn’t want to come home. But at least we found a firm favourite with Malta and with lots still undiscovered, we are sure to visit again!

Flipside of

Florida Discover Daytona, the family-friendly Atlantic-coast town where racing cars are just the beginning.

Y

ou can plan your trip around the Daytona 500, but the seasonal headliner has nothing on this Florida city’s permanent attractions – a long, wide stretch of beach, pleasant yearround temperatures and activities for all ages. New and renovated attractions have sprung up alongside Daytona’s historical spots, further boosting its multigenerational appeal. You’ll also find year-round racing-related activities that all the family can enjoy, so get into gear and go! Beach and beyond At the heart of Daytona’s busy beachfront lies the Daytona Beach Pier, a 774-foot-long wooden walkway near 4 2 Au t u m n / w i n t e r 2 0 1 3

the intersection of Atlantic Avenue (A1A) and International Speedway Boulevard. Walk or drive beneath the arched sign that reads ‘World’s Most Famous Beach’, and then pick your pastime. To the right you have more than seven miles of auto-friendly sand; to the left, a stretch of car-free beach with vendors selling everything from parasailing to bike rentals. Water taxis, sailing lessons, deep-sea fishing – there’s no shortage of boating options in the Daytona region. Opt for a scenic ride aboard a small cruiser like The Manatee (manateecruise.com; adults $19). The 25-passenger vessel runs two-hour tours down the Intracoastal Waterway from Ponce Inlet. You’ll stop to check out dolphins, manatees (in

Owners Harry Allen and Irv Cook have been magicians for more than 40 years. Their 12,000 tricks run the gamut, from practical jokes children can buy with pocket change to sophisticated equipment for professionals. Your history outing ends at the Museum of Arts & Sciences (moas.org; adults $12.95). Child-friendly displays include vintage Coke machines, Nigerian masks, the skeleton of a 16-ft long ground sloth and a collection of guns and swords from medieval times through the 19th century. Step on it Your final pit stop – the Daytona 500 Experience, part museum and part arcade, next to the city’s legendary track (daytona500experience.com). Kick off your visit with a 3-D IMAX movie on

the history of auto racing, then take a half-hour tram tour of the actual speedway. Children can get behind the wheel at the ARCA Driver Development Program, which allows four drivers to compete on a virtual track via a simulator. ORLANDO – Theme parks With Orlando only an hour away, follow these tips and you’ll be able to pack lots into a short stop over. Avoid the March Spring Break. Track waiting times by downloading a smartphone theme park app. Let the family pick one ‘must-do’. Get your No. 1 pick - on arrival map out your route of top rides and use the park’s daily schedule to plan. Use the fast track service. Insert your

tickets in a machine outside popular attractions to get a time to return to enter without waiting in line. Bring your own pushchair or wheelchair as rental queues are long. Plus the rentals at any given park are identical, so your own will stand out. If you rent one, tie a bright ribbon onto it so it’s easy to spot.

Holidaymakers from Gothenburg, Stockholm and nearby Norway have brought good shops, restaurants and cafés – perfect on a sunny afternoon. The islands attract the summer visitors. For a perfect day out, take the ferry to the nearby Koster Islands, reputedly the sunniest in Sweden. Rocky

Fun in Finland For a summer holiday, the lands of the midnight sun take a lot of beating. Our northern neighbours offer the purest air, sparkling waters and clean beaches. Warm days and balmy nights allow you to sunbathe and sleep well, and add to that the pleasures of bathing at midnight, and reading by the gentle light of the moon, and your holiday takes on a unique perspective. The crescent that forms Finland’s south west corner curls around the old capital of Turku and stretches from Pori, famous for its international summer jazz festival, to stately Hanko at the southern tip of Finland. Sandy beaches delight, as parents chill out while children build sand castles or go shrimping. Beyond the gently lapping waves, the archipelago of the Åland Islands, between Finland and Sweden, becomes the summer playground for the sporting. White sails of large and small yachts fill the horizon, while further inshore it’s the brightly coloured wind and kite surfers skimming over the waves that catch the eye. Even for the non-sporting, a trip to the 6,500 Åland islands is a must. Ferries and excursion boats slip past rocky islands of pretty wooden houses, while further out the islands are rockier and inhabited by fishermen who bring fresh seafood to the daily markets. Follow the well-signposted Archipelago Trail by car or on a bicycle to criss-cross the Baltic, courtesy of the bridges and ferries that ply between communities. Back on the mainland, Naantali offers all the traditional pleasures of a seaside

ferry takes you through the 174-square mile Kostehavet Marine National Park, an underwater wonderland of coral reefs, seaweed forests and eelgrass that is home to over 6,000 different species. Other places invite you to linger. Visit pretty little villages like Fjällbacken, where Camilla Läckberg, the Swedish Agatha Christie, set her thrillers, and the islands of Tjörn for swimming and its yacht harbour, or smart Marstrand for its Monaco lifestyle. The most northerly of my recommendations is a complete contrast. Close to the Norwegian border and 220 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Åre stretches along the lake against a backdrop of hills of dark green spruce and pine forests. Åre is one of Sweden’s best known ski resorts but is very different in summer when mountain bikes take over the slopes. Visitors walk along paths and glimpse the local inhabitants: moose, lynx, wolverine, arctic fox and even the occasional brown bear. Families can roar around the go-kart tracks or wrestle with white water rafting. Take the cable car up Åreskutan mountain to photograph the glorious view. On the Riviera in Denmark Denmark might not spring to mind for a beach and sea holiday, but the country that will host Eurovision 2014 and is better known for bacon and Hamlet is a fantastic undiscovered holiday destination with over 4,350 miles of shoreline. At the tip of Zealand, Denmark’s largest island, the small town of Vejby has access to a 19-mile stretch of white sandy beaches running along the north coast with views across to Sweden. It’s a coastline backed by forests and lakes, and offers perfect walking and cycling country along well-marked paths. Beside the calm waters of the Baltic Sea, the landscape of rolling dunes is dotted with small brightly coloured summer huts. Dubbed the Danish Riviera, this is the country’s best coastal swimming area and has become a favourite summer spot for the city dwellers of nearby Copenhagen.

island life: Boats in one of the 27 harbours of Bornholm near Copenhagen, part of an area known as the Danish Riviera.

Island holidays don’t come much better than on Bornholm. The island boasts 27 harbours dotted around its coastline, rocky sea cliffs on its granite north coast, sparkling inland lakes, and long sandy beaches on the south. Ruins of sun temples from its Neolithic past, Iron Age earthworks, Medieval round churches, and the largest Medieval fortress in north Europe on the cliff tops of Hammershus testify to its important past. Cyclists have a great choice of routes, including the Bornholm Gourmet Route of around 15 miles. On the trail you can visit a toffee factory, smokehouse for the famous local herrings, honey specialists, breweries, bakeries and more. Apparently, you burn up 1,576 calories on the trail, so it’s probably time to end with a satisfying plate of those smoked herrings for which Bornholm is famous.

We used the timeshare as a base, allowing us to fly into the Orinocco rainforest for a three-day trip of a lifetime, knowing that we could return to the comfort of our timeshare pool.

We all dream of the opportunity to travel the world. Neil Cowdy shares his globetrotting adventures with RCI…

“Three parrots! I don’t believe it! You’ve won!”

E

ven now 15 years later I can still clearly remember the scratch card seller in Andorra screaming with delight. That scream led my fiancé, Lesley and I on our RCI journey. I know, I know, buying through a scratch card is clichéd, but that scratch card (and my inheritance from Grandma Vera that funded the purchase) began a wild and wonderful journey through six continents of RCI affiliated resorts. Here is our story… We bought at Onagrup Club Tarter in Andorra (4268) and our first exchange was for our honeymoon in 1998 – Kruger Park Lodge in South Africa (2321).

‘Wow’, I distinctly remember thinking as we drew up outside our thatched semidetached chalet, ‘this can’t be right, this is bigger than our house!’ That wonderful trip began two traditions – firstly to find something unique about each place. Opening your curtains to a herd of impala first thing in the morning certainly fulfilled that criterion. Secondly, to open a bottle of wine and exclaim ‘Here’s to Vera’ to celebrate our purchase on every holiday. This tradition can get a bit out of hand and there have been many a long evening thanking everyone remotely connected to the purchase – but these stories are best left untold. Flushed by the success of this first venture into timeshare we went wild

next time. Two weeks to the Isla Margarita off the coast of Venezuela. We used the timeshare as a base, allowing us to fly into the Orinocco rainforest for a three-day trip of a lifetime, knowing that we could return to the comfort of our timeshare pool. We were on a roll. Andorra was quickly forgotten, as next came the home of timeshare – the US of A. Ever heard of Gulf shores, Alabama? No, neither had we, but it’s fantastic in October, and then up to Crown Point Resort (4044) in Arkansas, simply the largest timeshare we have ever stayed at. It was so large, we closed off one hallway! We explored the coast, New Orleans, and Graceland, Memphis. We loved timeshare, it was great, so much to explore, so many places to go. What could possibly go wrong? Children… A new millennium brought a new challenge. Three continents left, but now one, then two, then three extra little guests to accommodate - Olivia, Rhianna and Alex. At last a revolutionary decision – what about Europe? A flurry of exchanges followed – the unique setting of Barnsdale

Country Club (2932), Pine Lake Resort in Lancashire (1857) with a sauna – in our apartment, Landal Coldenhove (8144) in the Netherlands with a real log fire, and the bowling green at Club Casablanca in Northern Tenerife (1668). We had many years of great times, often with our parents in tow. Lots of memories, pictures and lots of ‘Here’s to Vera’ moments. Then in 2008 a major change: we moved. And not just round the corner either – but to Singapore. Suddenly the dream of six continents could become a reality. In October 2008, I heard rumours that Malaysia had constructed a Las Vegas style town in the middle of the rainforest near Kuala Lumpur. It seemed too strange to be true, but wait – there was already an RCI affiliated resort there. So off we went to the Genting Highlands. A great week, but unexpected problems with both of our traditions. Firstly Malaysia is Muslim so Vera’s toast was with lemonade and, secondly, anyone who has been to Genting will agree that there isn’t just one unique feature there, everything is unique! Five continents down, only one to go. Finally in October 2011 we arrived

at the door of Tamarind Sands (5716) on the NSW/Queensland border in Australia. The friendliest place you can imagine and a fitting end to our globetrotting. Not only did our unit have three bedrooms, it slept eight. Incredibly, as a family of five we were able to invite a friend and his daughter to stay with us! And the unique feature? A timeshare that offered surfing lessons. Awesome, as the kids would, and indeed did say. So fifteen years spent with RCI and six continents visited. We’ve met some amazing people, seen some great sights, saved thousands of pounds on accommodation costs, and got more out of those three parrots than we could possibly have imagined. Regrets? Just the one – we really should go back to Andorra one day, but in the meantime… ‘Here’s to Vera!’ A WORLD OF MEMORIES: 1. The Cowdy family (l-r) Olivia, Lesley, Neil, Alex and Rhianna. 2. Olivia and Rhianna in Phuket. 3. Sydney Opera House. 4. Olivia and Rhianna surfing at Cabarita Beach, New South Wales. 5. Isla Margarita coast. 6. The iconic Petronas Towers, Malaysia. 7. Alex with statues in Chinese Garden, Singapore. 8. Rhianna, Olivia and Alex in Bali. 9. Here’s to Vera!
