Take the roads less traveled through the Hills Kayla Gahagan Journal correspondent

Along with the usual hot spots and cool vistas, visitors to the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally this year are invited to take the roads less traveled. While the more-obvious scenic drives – Custer State Park, the Needles Highway and Spearfish Canyon — will attract their fair share of bikers and riders, the lesser-known roads are just as beautiful, said Heidi Kruse, the new executive director of the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce. “When people come visit, they think the Hills are so beautiful and so grand,” she said, “but they have a much more emotional reaction to the prairie. It’s so open. And it’s so unique to us.” Sturgis, which stands on the edge of large stretches of open prairie, is the perfect kick-off point for a drive past Bear Butte, Nisland and Newell, she said. “If you want away from the crowd, head the other direction” away from the hills, she said. “More people should go that way.” Other great ways to see the Northern Hills include drives from Boulder Canyon to Deadwood. It’s “fantastic,” she added, to go through Vanocker Canyon, and rather than turning left to head to Nemo, go right toward Deadwood and on to Spearfish. But if that doesn’t suit you, head for some of the most-scenic drives in the region: rides to and from Spearfish Canyon, Iron Mountain Road, Custer State Park and the Needles Highway, as well as the road to Rochford and Cheyenne Crossing. In the annual 2012 B u f fa l o C h i p G a z e t te

magazine, the top five scenic rides in the hills i n c l u d e d t h e Ne e d l e s Highway on South Dakota H ighway 87 through Custer State Park; and Badlands National Park, from Interstate 90, exits 110 or 130. It also included Wildlife Loop Road in the park, accessible by taking SD Highway 87 and 16A (and includes an opportunity to see some of the 1,300-plus bison in the park, as well as mountain goats, elk, deer and burros). In Wyoming, bikers can take in Devils Tower, which stands 1,300 feet tall. Ride I-90 west, turn right at Exit 185 at Sundance, take another right onto US 14 and travel 19 miles to WY 24. Then, turn right and travel six miles to WY 110, where the entrance is located. The magazine also suggested bikers take a ride through the Northern Hills on U.S. Highway 14A through Boulder Canyon and U.S. Highway 385, which includes Nemo Road and Vanocker Canyon. Bikers should have no issue this year with delays or unsafe roads, said South Dakota Department of Transportation regional traffic director John Matthesen. The department puts a hold on all local construction projects during rally week. An interstate project in Spearfish will be completed, which will be a major boon for area residents and visitors, he said. “We want to get back to full capacity, instead of the head-to-head traffic we’ve had the last several months,” Matthesen said. Paving projects near Reptile Gardens and Pactola Reservoir will be completed as well, he said. But even with smooth roa d s a n d n o d e l ays,

A pair of bikers make their way along Highway 79 near Bear Butte Monday afternoon. Though the Sturgis motorcycle rally doesn’t officially start until Aug. 5 many bikers have already made the trip to the Black Hills for the celebration.

Dense forests and curvy roads are also a part of the Highway 16A right south of Keystone. LEFT: Once past the tunnels and pigtail bridges riders are treated to sweeping views on their way to Custer State Park on Highway 16A.

Matthesen cautioned all drivers to remember which week it is. His advice is simple: “Watch out,” he said. Kruse agreed. “If you’re driving a giant motor home or truck — be aware,” she said. “You’re

around a whole bunch of people who don’t know where they’re going … Semis are on their usual routes and a lot of vendors come in with the big trucks. It gets a little gnarly here.”

STURGIS | Tennessee Moonshine, motorsport mayhem and a massive smoker are part of the lineup for the 73rd edition of the Sturgis motorcycle rally. New at this year’s rally is Ole Smoky Moonshine. And, yes, it is legal. When Tennessee state law recently changed to allow the distillation of spirits, the makers of Ole Smoky said they saw it as an opportunity to showcase the art of superior mountain-made moonshine. This is corn-liquor which is sold straight (called White Lightnin’), or combined with spices and fruit such as apple pie moonshine, moonshine cherries or peach moonshine. They are offering up samples at the Sturgis Liquor Store on Lazelle throughout rally week. Beginning today, Friday, Aug. 2, Team Swoop which offers up sport bike and Harley-Davidson freestyle stunts, will put on daily shows at Fourth and Lazelle Streets in Sturgis. Then, on Thursday, Aug. 8, Swoop will present Motorsport Mayhem, which will feature FMX and street-freestyle action at the Sturgis Fairgrounds on Ball Park Road. Organizers say the highlight of the show will be special guest “Jumpin’” Jeff Shneider performing a daring grand finale 80-foot jump on a HarleyDavidson. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. An also must-see at this year’s rally is Trace “Rib Whisperer” Arnold’s massive smoker. Arnold is bringing the smoker as part of the History channel’s Cross-Country Cookout. The 80-foot long ultimate smoker and grill, designed and

operated by Arnold, is the size of a tanker and is hauled by a semi. In the unique smoker chamber, Arnold can slow-smoke more than 2,000 pounds of meat. Hidden beneath the 20-foot hydraulic lid is a wood-fired grill with the capacity to cook 1,000 hotdogs, 500 hamburgers or 200, 16 oz. steaks at once. History channel fans at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from Sunday, Aug. 4 through Tuesday, Aug. 6 are invited to visit the massive smoker and sample the Rib Whisperer’s tasty hickorysmoked and jalapeno cheddar sausage and play backyard games such as cornhole and ladder golf to win merchandise and prizes. The massive cooker will be

located in the Second Street Plaza, they city’s new vendor area at Second and Main Streets. The History channel tent is located at the north end of the plaza. Anchoring the plaza on the south is John Deere. Although they have had a presence at the rally in the past, this year John Deere has gone “all in” renting prime real estate in the plaza. “It’s great to see them expand their footprint,” Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie said. Ainslie said funds from renting the Second Street Plaza area during the rally would be reinvested in improvements to the plaza as a year-round community gathering place, much like Main Street Square in Rapid City.
