New Indian Chief unveiled in full-throttle Sturgis event Tom Griffith Journal staff STURGIS | Many things are revealed during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, from nipple rings and body paint to man’s most questionable tendencies. On Saturday night, in a launch worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster, Polaris Industries unveiled the reborn Indian Chief with a celebration replete with rock bands, celebrities, spotlights, big screens and a sensational made-in-America motorcycle. “Tonight America’s No. 1 motorcycle company is going to crack the throttle,” a Polaris spokesman told more than 2,000 enthusiasts gathered for the unveiling

THE FORECAST
at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. “Tonight the wait is over.” Manufactured in Wisconsin, assembled in Iowa and owned by the $2 billion Minnesota-based Polaris, the new Indian Chief was reborn after a two-year hiatus in which the bike was redesigned and updated with the latest technologies, including a retractable windshield and Bluetooth connectivity. Worldwide re-introductions of the Chief are planned in coming months, including a September appearance at European Bike Week in Austria and a November presentation at the EICMA trade fair in Milan, Italy. During Saturday
evening ’s celebration, Motorcycle Hall of Fame Board President Dave Davis said Polaris engineers first visited the site in January, then designed an extravagant special event for this year’s rally. Davis said he was grateful Polaris chose the Hall of Fame for its unveiling of the classic Indian Chief, particularly because his organization is set to launch a $7-10 million capital campaign at its Wednesday morning Hall of Fame Breakfast at the Lodge at Deadwood. “Junction and Main is the cornerstone of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,” he said. “The exposure the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum will get from this will be unbelievable.”

STURGIS RALLY DAILY
RALLY GOES REGIONAL Custer, Hill City and other locales around the Black Hills get in on the fun Mary Garrigan Journal staff
Yes, it’s called the Sturgis motorcycle rally, but don’t think that stops other Black Hills towns from capitalizing on the annual event that drops millions of dollars into the area’s economy. The Custer Cruisin’ event, a rally week promotion, transforms Custer’s Main Street into a sort of “mini-Sturgis” from Aug. 2-11, with VIP parking for motorcycles and plenty of vendor booths. But it has something else that Sturgis doesn’t: a Gen. George Armstrong Custer reenactor who really looks like the guy who met his infamous end at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. “General Custer, Dr. (Valentine) McGillicuddy, and several other re-enactors waving flags and welcoming them to Custer as they hit Main Street,” said event planner Rex Harris. “We love to do that and our visiting bikers seem to enjoy it equally as much.” Custer is quieter and slower than Sturgis, and that’s just fine with a certain biker demographic, Harris said. “Thousands of bikers staying in Custer seem to be the older, mature person not interested in the big party up north,” he said. “They also know that some of the most fun and beautiful riding is in the southern Hills.” “We like to think we are not taking anyone or anything away from Sturgis, (why would any of us consider that?), but instead offer something a little different, a little quieter,” he said. For the first time this year, Custer hosts a Vintage Motorcycle Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Open to all bikes 1980 or older, there are trophies awarded in four categories: Domestic, European, Metric and People’s Choice. And for the $10 entry fee, bikers will receive a personal bike photo with the aforementioned general. “You should ride the h i l l s f ro m h e re ,” sa i d Miranda Boggs, Custer Area Chamber of Commerce event coordinator, echoing the Custer Cruisin’ theme. Bikers can do just that at the 14th annual Mayor’s Ride on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and the annual Veteran’s R i d e & C e re m o ny o n Thursday, Aug. 8.

Mitch McLain, dressed as Gen. George Armstrong Custer, has said he may take as many as 1,000 photos with tourists during the Sturgis motorcycle rally week.
At Black Hills State University in Spearfish, bikers can compete in the first King of the Hills Strong Man competition on Tuesday, Aug. 6. With two weight classes (199 pounds or less and 200 pounds or more), participants will compete in five strength contests: • Hauling the Honey: Pull a motorcycle trailer with a female (aka: “the h o n e y ” ) s e a te d o n a
motorcycle. The trailer must travel 10 yards in a timed event. • Burning Rubber: A timed tire-lifting event. • Heavy Metal: A bike f ra m e s h o u l d e r- p re ss event. • Curling Brewski’s: A bicep bar curl with two beer kegs placed at the end of a straight bar. • Hands of Steel: A timed grip contest lifting a motorcycle motor off the
ground. We i g h - i n /re g i s t ra tion runs from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the Donald E. Young Center Fieldhouse. About 125 trike riders are expected to spend the day in Hill City until 3 p.m., when they will be escorted out of town on their way to the Buffalo Chip for evening concerts featuring Mastodon, Machine Head and Rob Zombie. “On this day, trike riders from around the world will come together to celebrate the freedom and camaraderie shared on three wheels,” said Rod Woodruff of the Buffalo Chip.

Forget the black leather vest. Lose the head bandana, too. And don’t even think about putting on another Harley Davidson T-shirt. The best-dressed men at this year’s Sturgis Rally are wearing Steam Punk fashion, a menswear trend that hearkens back to the 19th-century’s Industrial Age and incorporates longtailed frock coats, elegantly tailored vests and hightopped bowler hats, accessorized with chains and gears and rivets, the accouterments of a Victorian era when machines were revolutionizing daily life in America between 1850 and 1910. At his Hill City art gallery, owner Randy Berger has found that a steam punk clothing line is helping improve his business bottom line. The period clothing with a modernized Westernwear flair is flying off the racks at Warrior’s Work & Ben West Gallery, especially
flying machines that were becoming all the rage in that time period. Come to think of it, worn with one of Berger’s private label, $2,300 customdesigned leather jackets,
those goggles might make a fashionable accessory for any Harley Davidson. Contact Mary Garrigan at 394-8424 or mary.garrigan@ rapidcityjournal.com

with customers like wellheeled motorcyclist who like the unique, customized styling. Think Jim West from the “Wild West West” television series meets Robert Downey Jr. from “Sherlock Holmes” fame. Frock-length men’s jackets are hot sellers, often for special occasions such as a wedding. But the coats look great with a white shirt and a pair of jeans, too, Berger said. “It drives the
women wild,” he added of the casually elegant look. Steam punk hats — top hats, stokers and bowlers, costing as much as $375, including the ones Berger customizes with beaded bands — have drawn customers ever since he started offering them. “I sold 75 of those hats in the first three months,” Berger said. Today, as much as 25 percent of his revenue comes from sales of the unique steam punk clothing lines. Berger also offers a line of handcrafted leather jackets that are customized with embossed designs not unlike the ones that he adds to his own custom leather picture frames.
