New Sturgis liquor store annex off to a slow start Deb Holland Journal staff STURGIS | The new liquor store annex on Lazelle Street in Sturgis was off to a slow start midway through rally week. Clerk Doug Skeie said business was slow and that he believed rallygoers didn’t know the store was there. But, on Saturday, the city added a digital sign at the location advertising specials. Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie said Monday he knew of the slow start, but said he thought that business was picking up. The City of Sturgis will operate a second liquor store location on park land

it owns near the city soccer fields on East Lazelle Street. In an attempt to capture some of the traffic that heads east of Sturgis for rally activities and campgrounds, the council last month approved a location north of Lazelle Street near the entrance to the soccer fields and across from Lions Club Park for the liquor store annex. At earlier meetings, the council had discussed placing the second location on the south side of Lazelle Street in an area used as a ice-skating park during the winter. The property is owned by the city and is zoned as park land. Ainslie said city officials believed the north location would be better because

there is a paved parking lot and a hook-up for electrical, which was not available on the south. Adding electricity would have cost the city nearly $4,000 at the south location, he said. Council member Mike Bachand worried about safety when customers cross traffic to enter the new location. “This is an accident waiting to happen,” he said. “I don’t agree with either location.” The city’s main liquor store operates in a 4,000 s q u a re - fo o t b u i l d i n g opened in 2011 on Lazelle a block west of Junction Avenue. Freedom Display to honor fallen Benghazi heroes Tom Griffith Journal staff STURGIS | Tonight, thousands of concert-goers at the Buffalo Chip Campground awaiting the appearance of Lynyrd Skynyrd will pause from partying to honor two of the fallen – former Navy SEAL commandos Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. Woods and Doherty, who were among a half-dozen CIA security operatives who rushed to the Benghazi outpost Sept. 11, 2012, to defend it from attackers, and who perished with U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. “The Buffalo Chip, for more than 20 years, has chosen some deserving American patriot to honor for his service to the people

of this country,” said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff. “The decision was made last winter to honor Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty for having shown more courage and more heroism than anyone in recent memory. “Their actions, contrary to orders to ‘stand down,’ saved the lives of some 30 Americans at the cost of their own,” added Woodruff. “They deserve to be known as the heroes they are and our government doesn’t seem to be up to that. They unquestionably served with honor ... They were heroes and we are here to show them respect.” Members of the fallen servicemen’s families will be on hand for today’s Freedom Celebration in Sturgis to accept the honors and acknowledge the selfless contributions of

Woods and Doherty on behalf of a grateful nation. Madison Rising will perform the “Star Spangled Banner” at 7 p.m., prior to Brantley Gilbert and Lynyrd Skynyrd taking the stage. Woods and Doherty responded to the attack on the evening of Sept. 11, from a CIA installation about a mile from the consulate, according to published reports. When the assault on the consulate went quiet about 1 a.m. Sept. 12, they remained on site until daybreak, when the attack commenced again. The two men reportedly were on a rooftop, defending the compound, when they were felled by mortar fire. Their sacrifice allowed U.S. officials to safely evacuate more than 30 State Department and CIA personnel from Benghazi.

said he knew the store was busy, but when he and Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie began to figure just how much business they were doing for the size of the building, they found it astonishing.

National statistics show that the average weekly sales per square foot for a liquor store is $4.81, or $9.62 for two weeks. In Sturgis, figures show that during the two weeks of the annual motorcycle rally

Storybook Island Theatre presents ‘Rapunzel’

the average sales per square foot is $92, nearly 10 times the national average. Ainslie said the satellite location would run the duration of the rally with likely hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Paralyzed cancer survivor celebrates life LEFT: Mike Simonson swings his leg over the seat of his 1972 Harley-Davidson Electro Glide while his father Jim Simonson steadies his wheelchair at the Days Inn in Rapid City. Simonson has been riding motorcycles and motor bikes since he was very young, but was paralyzed in 2003.

Molly Barari Journal correspondent

Mixed in among thousands of bikers at the Sturgis rally this week, Mike Simonson and his 1972 Harley will fit right in. But there will be one big, albeit unseen difference: Simonson will go on scenic rides and roll through the Black Hills without the use of his legs. Simonson, a 41-yearold resident of Ohio, is a cancer survivor and paraplegic who lost the use of his legs due to a separate, rare medical condition in 2003. To navigate the rally on his cycle, Simonson will ride a Harley that essentially has no need for foot shifting or braking. Instead, special modifications allow Simonson to shift with his hands and use a braking system that requires no foot pressure. Fo r s t a b i l i t y w h e n stopped, the bike also sports a fiberglass sidecar that Simonson and his father discovered on a Native American reservation in New York. They later learned that the rig used to be a Toronto police department sidecar. The bike is also equipped with a brandnew S&S engine, enabling Simonson to accelerate with optimal speed and force to aid stabilization. “Thanks to this bike, I won’t be the last guy on the totem pole as we navigate big hills,” Simonson joked. Simonson is travelling to the annual rally with a group of friends, including his father. It will be his second time visiting the rally — though the first time, he only passed through. This time, he’s eager to have the full Sturgis experience. His group has several rides planned, including runs to Devils Tower, Sundance, Wyo., the Needles Highway, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore National Monument, the Badlands and to Wall Drug. “Of course,” he said, “we’ll also be enjoying downtown Sturgis!” Evident from his excitement and attitude, Simonson really sees the rally as a celebration of all he has overcome to be here. “Doctors said I’d die, and that I’d never ride

again, but I proved them wrong on both counts,” Simonson said. Simonson was diagnosed in 1998 with nonHo d g k i n ’s ly m p h o m a , a blood cancer. Doctors told him he had no chance of survival. That’s when Simonson’s family discovered a new treatment online called Bryostatin, a potent modulator of protein kinase C, which acts in concert with other anticancer drugs. Since Simonson believed he had nothing to

radiation myelitis, which involves the infection of or the inflammation of areas of the spinal cord and central nervous system. It’s a side effect that occurs in 3 of every 1 million chemotherapy patients, according to Simonson. The result: Paralysis from the waist down. “I could’ve become gloomy and depressed, but no one wants to be around that person,” he said. “I chose not to let the paralysis define me.” And he was determined to ride his motorcycle again. “I was that kid who was always riding dirt bikes and hot rods,” he said, chuckling. “Driving my Harley is my passion. It worked and by he was diagnosed with S i m o n s o n ’s fa t h e r, 2001, he was pronounced cancer-free. “I was on top of the world. I had defied the odds. I had beaten cancer,” he said. “That’s when I received the next big blow.” Simonson began experiencing weakness and loss of sensation in his legs. By 2003, he couldn’t stand or walk. Intense rounds of radiation during his cancer

Jim, shares his son’s passion for motorcycles. He understood how important it was for his son to ride again, so he built a paraplegic-friendly bike. Simonson now focuses on living his life fully, which means working as a real estate property manager and keeping his eyes, ears and mind alert for the next treatment that could help him in his quest to walk again. He stays positive, he said, for the sake of his family, which includes his wife, Deana, and daughters Ally, 3, and Emmy, 9 months. “I will never give up on hope, because hope gave me the strength to live and it will continue to give me the strength to walk someday. “I will walk again before I die,” Simonson said.

AA Serenity Ride slated for Thursday Journal staff

Alcoholics Anonymous is a familiar presence at the rally, with its messages of strength, hope and surrender. Since its founding in 1935 in Akron, Ohio, AA has been instrumental in helping many alcoholics achieve and maintain sobriety and stability in

their lives. It’s fitting then, that a ride has been created in the organization’s honor. The ride starts at 10 a.m. Thurday at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 1222 Junction Ave. in Sturgis, according to the Sturgis AA Club, which hosts the event. Riders can register at any of the five meetings held daily at the church,

which start at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. The ride is expected to last up to four hours, making a loop up to Spearfish, back down through Spearfish Canyon into Lead and eventually back to Sturgis from Vanocker Canyon. A picnic and speaker meeting follows the ride.

Tire smoke billows as burnout audience sizzles Jackson Bolstad Journal staff

SUNDANCE, Wyo. | With tires squealing and orange smoke billowing out the back of his black Harley-Davidson Super Glide, the Sundance, Wyo., burnouts champion lifted his American flag to the sky. “You aren’t going to be up here and just burn your tire off and win,” said Chuck Woods, this year’s burnout champion. “You have to have a game plan. The audience wants something to cheer about.” The burnout competition has been attracting motorcyclists during the Sturgis rally to Sundance, population 1,187, for 30-plus years, said event organizer Lorrie Hogan. On a raised platform, motorcyclists spin their back tires until it pops, and they give the crowd the best show they can. “The audience judges who wins by cheering the loudest for their favorite rider at the end,” Hogan said. Contestants compete for a first-place prize of $1,000, second place $500 and third place $250, Hogan said. On average, there are usually seven to 13 competitors every year, she said. Ten contestants competed for this year’s cash prizes. Contestant Craig Bear, from Gillette, Wyo., said winning the competition takes more than just having a motorcycle. “It takes a little adrenaline, a little showing-off,” Bear said. “Anybody can do it, but it takes some cojones to make the tire blow.” Bear said he had been to numerous burnouts before, but the Sundance burnout was his first time competing. One after another, each of this year’s 10 contestants rode their motorcycles up the six-foot tall platform. Hundreds, possibly thousands of people surround the stage, just inches from the action. “There’s never been this many people here,” said Mark Golberg, from Stewartville, Minn. “It’s great action and it really supports the community.” Golberg said he has attended

the burnouts in Sundance the past five years. He said the competition provides a great opportunity for a lot of people to get out of the craziness of Sturgis. “It’s just something different, and they just love the rally folks over here,” Golberg said. Often the day begins with a ride to the Ham N Jam event in Hulett, Wyo., for a free pork sandwich and a cold beer. After lunch, riders will ride 35 miles south to Sundance for the burnout competition. Golberg said that competitors usually have souped-up engines in their bikes that can put out a lot of horsepower. He said he could probably never compete with his motorcycle. “I may be able to get a new tire, but I’d need a new engine to get home,” Golberg said.

Smoke and hot rubber flew into the crowd as each contestant took his turn impressing the crowd; some using women, another a tiger costume and even a mounted skull and antlers.

Woods received by far the loudest cheer from the crowd when his special tire started spewing orange smoke. The cheers only grew louder when he started to ride his bike surfer-style and wave an

American flag. “I was worried about falling during the stunt, but it’s cool to do something that gets the crowd going,” Woods said. Finishing off his ride in style, Woods kicked up his feet on the handlebars, leaned back and listened as his tire popped. A former second- and third-place winner, this year is the first time Woods has won the burnouts in Sundance.
