audiologist’s background and specialization, along with the wait time for new patients.

f you or a loved one has experienced hearing loss, you are not alone. More than 38 million Americans have some form of hearing impairment.

Ensure that the professional has the proper license and reliable references to patients he has treated.

Many people don’t realize they have a problem. On average, it takes seven years before someone seeks help after first noticing a problem.

Before making an appointment, consider your goals. You might want a complete hearing evaluation. Perhaps you need a fitting for a new hearing aid or a replacement. Or maybe you need more information about ear care and preventing hearing loss.

The good news is that hearing loss is not difficult to treat. The first step is to visit your primary care doctor. The doctor can determine if there is a physical reason for the hearing impairment, such as an infection or ear wax buildup. Your doctor will usually recommend a secondary visit to an ear, nose and throat doctor or an audiologist.

It is usually impossible to resolve an issue with one appointment. You will likely need follow up visits for tests, consultations and fittings, if necessary.

The primary care physician may give you the names of several audiologists. Research which professional will accept your insurance.

If you have experienced hearing loss, the your relationship with your audiologist should be ongoing. Make sure you are comfortable with this person. If not, keeping looking; you will need to have a rapport with this doctor.

Also, the audiologists may have a specialty. For example, some professionals see elderly people, others may focus on helping young people. The audiologist might have a special skill, such as cochlear implants.

Finally, it is never too early to have a child’s ears checked by a qualified practitioner. Children who have a hard time hearing will have a difficult time in school until you resolve the matter.

Consult your friends and family who have experienced hearing loss. Perhaps they have seen an audiologist in your area. They may give you an honest assessment about the quality of service and demeanor of the staff. When you have narrowed your choices down to two or three professionals, call their offices and conduct a preliminary interview. They should inform you about the

Likewise, consider having your hearing checked. There is no shame in getting help for hearing impairment. These problems do not go away by themselves. Visiting an audiologist can improve the quality of your life.

How to Choose a Community College

C

ommunity colleges are a great way to save money, earn college credits or learn new skills. Many people start their academic careers at a community college before transferring to a four-year institution. Your local community college may even have a partnership with a university so you could earn a bachelor’s degree right on campus. These colleges are also a fantastic option for students with family responsibilities, full-time jobs or other obligations. Tuition is often far less expensive than that at a large university. There are plenty of things to consider when choosing a community college. Location, tuition costs, courses and ease of scheduling are all factors to keep in mind. Research all the colleges in your area. The ideal community college should be no more than 30 minutes away, accessible by car or public transportation. You’ll be more likely to attend classes if it doesn’t take hours to get there. Typically, there is no or very limited on-campus living. Cost is always a major factor. Many community colleges have two levels of tuition: one for in-area residents and one for out-of-area residents. If you live in the same county as the community college, you can expect to pay a third to half of what others pay. There might also be financial assistance available. Local businesses concentrate their resources on their local community colleges. They might provide scholarships for students. State and federal grants and loans can also help defray the costs of higher education.

Courses are another consideration when choosing a community college. Make sure your community college is accredited or has a cooperative partnership with local or state universities. There is nothing worse than attending college for two years only to find your credits aren’t transferable. If you find several community colleges offer your choice of major, research their internship program and reputation. Do they have employment statistics? Choosing a college with a higher employment rate could benefit you after graduation. Most community colleges post their class schedules online or include a flyer with the local newspaper. You can also pick up a course catalogue from the college itself. Review their offerings. If you need to take classes in the late evening, are there enough available to make it worth attending that college? What about distance learning opportunities? Many colleges let students earn certificates or degrees completely online. Non-traditional students may need a more flexible schedule. Classes may be offered several days of the week, in the morning or evening. Many college have weekend classes. Students who need to graduate quickly may take accelerated programs. You might simply need to earn a certification for a current or future job. Community colleges offer these programs as well. Be sure to ask your employer about tuition reimbursement. Consider your lifestyle and personal requirements when choosing a community college. It is likely that a community college in your area will fit your needs.

How to Choose a Funeral Home M

aking funeral arrangements can be hard. Dealing with the death of a loved one is a challenge.

Budget is a major concern for most people. Inquire about basic fees. Ask about services the funeral home may offer and if payment arrangements can be made. Ask questions and take notes. Staff members should be patient with you.

That’s why it is better to think ahead so you can have a clear mind while making these difficult decisions.

It is important to get written estimates for everything. Ask about hours for viewing, in-house versus off-site services, cremation services, additional fees and special requests.

Most people don’t have much experience with planning funerals. When the time comes to visit a funeral home, they find prices vary dramatically. Indeed, funerals can be costly.

The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide customers with a price list. If you believe the casket prices are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges.

Planning before your time of grief will help you make wise decisions under difficult circumstances. Here are some things to consider when you must select a funeral home.

Do not decide on a funeral home right away. Think about it for a bit. The decision should be made with clarity, free from emotion.

The first step is to find out if the deceased has made any funeral arrangements and whether these plans need to be changed. Sometimes weather may be an issue or other factors may get in the way of what has already been planned.

After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director can help you with the required forms and permits. You should have a copy of the death certificates and make the actual burial or cremation arrangements.

If no arrangements were made, ask family and friends to see if the deceased made any specific wishes. If possible, respect those wishes.

When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don’t need or can’t afford. Stay within your budget.

If pre-arrangements with a local company exist, then contact that company. Arrangements bought years ago may not cover the cost of the funeral or represent the latest wishes of the deceased. If you are in this situation, look around to see if another funeral home has a better arrangement, or make adjustments as necessary. To find the right funeral home, ask family, friends and pastors for a recommendation. It is a good way to focus on funeral homes with excellent reputations. You might also consider your own experiences at funeral homes in your city. If you cannot get referrals, look on the Internet. Select three or four funeral homes that might fit your needs. Visit each one with a close friend or relative.

Talk to the funeral home and tell them who in the deceased’s family is authorized to make decisions. Be very detailed about your expectations and what kind of arrangements you want. Tell them if something is not being done according to your intentions. Good funeral homes will guide you through the process to ensure that the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. In your time of grief and hardship, preplanning can give you a small measure of comfort and peace.

How to Choose a musical Instrument T

he ability to play a musical instrument is a wonderful thing, and you can never

start too early. Children are curious and imaginative by nature, and many will be able to pick up music very quickly, and develop a love for it. The ability to play an instrument and read music will be infinitely helpful later in your child’s life, and studies have shown that music can help make a child smarter, develop giftedness, more mature, and more confident. If they’re not yet out of elementary school, a good musical background will help them to succeed in middle and high school bands, setting an example for all of their peers. Set an example and motivate your child. If you have any musical talent, play your instrument in front of your child, and answer their curious questions. Let them experiment with it (within reason really young children probably shouldn’t be messing with your oboe, especially unsupervised). Talk about your days in school band, how much fun you had back when you took piano lessons, and other things that will pique their interest. Take note if they show a particular interest in a certain instrument. Expose your child to music. Start early - when your child is very young, play quiet music for them and let them fall asleep to CDs of classical music. Once they’re older, take them to school and professional concerts, and point out certain instruments. You can also listen to music or watch videos of concerts together. Try to teach them to “feel” the music, and take note of the many things going on at once. Get into the habit of playing classical music in the background when you read, sew, or do something else relaxing. Try to teach them to “feel” the music, and take note of the many things going

How to Choose In-Home Care Sometimes, people need help in order to live independently. Seniors and even young people with debilitating disease could live at home with assistance. Nursing homes are no longer the only option. While many of them provide compassionate care, the move can prove to be expensive and traumatic. It forces the patient to leave their familiar environment and belongings. In-home care is becoming more common. Patients who need regular attention can still live at home surrounded by family and friends. It is the perfect compromise. Professionals visit the home of the patient to provide services. Not only is it convenient and comfortable, it is typically less expensive than the care offered at a fulltime facility.

Because it is growing in popularity, many in-home care companies often specialize in services ranging from housekeeping and errand running to daily medical assistance. Talk to your loved one’s primary care physician to help you understand your choices. The doctor can help you select a provider and help you determine the level of care required. This professional may even have referrals to give you. After speaking to several in-home care providers, you can compare the range of services they offer. Typically, they will fall into three categories:

MEDICAL CARE Providers vary greatly in terms of the types of medical care they provided. Some may be able to offer 24-hour care while others are better with simple tasks, such as monitoring blood sugar or reminding patients to take medication. Always inquire about the medical qualifications of any in-home care providers you are considering. All workers should have the proper training, degrees and certifications. If you are unclear about the exact level of medical care your loved one will require, ask your physician. The doctor will also be able to tell you what qualifications in-home care providers should have in your situation.

PERSONAL CARE Caregivers can help with daily grooming, mobility and any special diet requirements. They can help prepare meals or run simple errands.

COMPANIONSHIP Homebound people often need companionship. An in-home care professional will provide a friendly face and good conversation as well as general care. It might be a matter of reading aloud to your loved one, discussing the daily news or playing a game of cards. Quality in-home care providers understand that patients also need mental stimulation and human contact in order to stay well. Before entering a contract, understand the services that will be provided. You want to make sure you are getting what you need without paying for services that are not required. If personal care is needed, you should not have to pay for medical care as well. Everyone, including you, should be comfortable with the people who work for the company. In-home caregivers will quickly become part of your life, especially as they enter and exit the house. Get referrals from people who have been in a similar situation. The best in-home care provider is about finding the right combination of services. Once you have the right company, the patient will receive companionship, comfort and cost savings that make in-home care such a fantastic choice. „

Selecting the Right Insurance Agent for Your Needs

S

hopping for the right insurance agent can feel overwhelming. After all, there are plenty of things to consider. You need to find a company that offers the right mix of service, coverage and an affordable price. The challenge may simply be not knowing how to identify a reliable, reputable agent. Remember that everyone needs insurance coverage. An experienced agent can walk you through various options, keeping in mind your budget and lifestyle. Before choosing an insurance plan, you will need to identify an agent to guide you through the process. Your financial future depends on finding the right person to help you get insurance that will fit your needs. Your family, friends and colleagues have likely worked with insurance agents in the past. Ask people you trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, it is because that person has had a positive experience. There is a good likelihood that you will have similar results. Successful agents understand that offering great service will keep them in business. Their careers depend on word-of-mouth. If you are happy with the service you receive, your insurance agent will appreciate your willingness to refer acquaintances to her in the future. If you do not have recommendations, begin researching your options. Begin by looking at local companies and brokers. Large insurers give all of their agents the same training. Each agent will be subject to the same company policies. In some ways, that can be comforting. However, agents at large companies may lack creativity and flexibility in how they handle their accounts. As you conduct your research, be thorough and critical. Buying a policy is similar to

purchasing a new car or home. It is truly that important. Select a company that is highly regarded by consumers. Read reviews of each company to determine who has the most satisfied clients. Are they easy to work with? Have there been any problems with collecting on a policy? Also, check that any prospective agent has all necessary licenses and training. After narrowing your list of prospective agents, make an appointment to visit each one. Prepare a list of questions and concerns about your personal situation. Take notes during your meeting. Remember that you must feel comfortable with the answers before purchasing a policy. If an agent tries to pressure you into making a decision right away, inform him that you need more time and cannot sign anything immediately. The right agent will let you take as much time as you need to understand the implications of each policy. They will give you useful information and not subject you to high-pressure sales techniques. Your agent should be available. The relationship doesn’t end once the sale is completed. Your dialogue should be continuous. The best agents are available in the event you have to file a claim. Agents who have been in business for many years likely have a good reputation and track record. They understand the policies and will even take extra care that you are properly protected. It is essential that you choose the right type and amount of insurance to adequately protect yourself and your financial future. The policy should be tailored to fit your specific needs. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent will be an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future. „

How to Choose a Mattress Here are a few tips to help you choose a mattress and take sleep more seriously!

S

leep prescriptions are on the rise as we spend less time in bed… and more time awake once we get there! It’s a well documented fact: we are getting less sleep than ever before. Busy schedules, insomnia, restless legs, back pain and unsupportive mattresses are all contributing to the trend; competing with our time to dream—and more importantly—to rejuvenate our bodies at night. Recent stats indicate that about two-thirds of us have clinical sleep issues. Others of us simply have poor nocturnal habits…these are the things we can control ourselves. Like watching TV, using a computer in bed or eating the wrong things before we sleep. But what we tend to underestimate is the value of a good quality mattress to help us fall asleep faster and stay there longer. Many consumers are overwhelmed by the choices available and simply put off making a decision due to confusion. Here are a few tips to help you choose a mattress and take sleep more seriously!

t If your mattress is more than 5 years old, it’s time for a new one! Mattress technology has come a long way—with tempur-pedic, memory foam, cool gel infusions, adjustable foundations—all engineered to relax and support. Look for mattresses with at least a 10 year warranty and ask what the details of the warranty are. t When you are planning to buy a mattress, you

should take go to a store that sells only mattresses and take some time to think about what you specifically dislike about your current bed—a good sales associate will ask you this question at the beginning of your visit in an attempt to help fit you properly for a mattress. The better information you give the better your success in choosing a bed.

t What size do you currently have? Is it big enough? If you are sleeping with a partner, you may want to explore the option of upsizing to a king if space allows. Motion transfer is a common reason we toss and turn 60-80 times per night, thus contributing to less REM sleep. Memory foam or adjustable sleep number mattresses are a great choice when motion transfer is an issue. t If you have back, neck, leg pain or circulatory problems you should consider specialty foam products such as high density memory foam or latex mattresses as they conform to the shape of the body helping to alleviate pressure points and properly align the spine. These mattresses are also a great option for someone who suffers from allergies. t Find a store that has sales associates that are more interested in selling you better sleep than they are in selling a bed. You are looking for an associate that will empathize with your sleep situation and sincerely try to help you make a good decision, in addition to being able to answer your questions.

t Buy from a store that has a comfort guarantee. Beware of any store that wants to take your money without giving you any assurances in return! Ask about the details of the sleep guarantee policy. It usually takes 30-45 days for your body to fully adjust to a new sleeping surface, so any store offering 60 days or more is a good choice. It’s important that you give yourself time to adjust, but in some cases the bed ends up being too hard or too soft and is not a good fit for you. Having the sleep guarantee is something that any quality mattress retailer should offer. t Price IS indicative of quality! Don’t be afraid of higher priced beds, they will last longer and perform better. Look at interest free finance options to make a low monthly payment. Model close-outs and special factory offers are a great way to get a quality bed at a more reasonable price. t Relax and take your time when you go out to shop. Don’t be afraid to lay down for an extended amount of time and really focus on how the mattress feels. When making the final decision, your own individual comfort preferences should come ahead of any specific technology. Taking the time to make a good choice when purchasing a mattress may be a little time consuming, but in exchange you’ll be healthier, smarter, more alert and even better looking! (Did you know that more sleep can make you look up to three years younger?) So get out there and start shopping, you’ll be glad you did!

How to Choose a New Car Dealer Purchasing a new car can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you have never done it before. Inexperienced car shoppers are often intimidated by the cost, the process and even dealers who may try to overcharge them. It doesn’t have to be this way. Finding a dealer you can trust will defuse anxiety. The whole experience will become a simple, low-pressure transaction. Good car dealers will make the entire process of buying a car simple and straightforward.

Choose the Right Car Selecting the right automobile for your needs and lifestyle is essential. Large families may need an SUV or van to fit everyone into the vehicle. But college students buying their first car would probably be happy with a compact car such as coupe. The savings on gas will help ease your finances while you are in school. Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and satellite radio, just to name a few. If you have to commute long distances, think about purchasing a smaller car with a good MPG rating. Hybrid cars can help you save money on gas. Anyone in a cold climate might look at various vehicles with either all-wheel or front-wheel drive.

Choose the Dealer Once you have settled on a car model, check into area car dealers. Finding several dealers who sell the brand of car you want is usually best. The competition for your business will help you negotiate the total cost of your car. Make sure to look for current discounts on the car you want. During specific times of the year, you might be able to get a great deal on a new car. It is particularly true during year-end sales. Of course, you should test-drive a car before purchasing it. When you begin your negotiations, remember that price isn’t everything. Service should play a role as well. You are building a long-term relationship with this dealer and manufacturer. It is not worth getting a less-than-satisfactory experience just to save a few dollars. It is essential that you feel comfortable with the dealership. Buying a car is an expensive, long-term commitment. It is always better to find a car salesperson who is informative and friendly. It will make your transaction as simple and comfortable as possible.

The pet waiting room should also be free from debris and chemicals. Observe how the groomer and staff interact with animals and customers. Nothing can be more difficult than a slick, wiggly pet. But a groomer should be gentle. He should never yell or jerk a pet around. Inquire about their services. Do they groom both cats and dogs? Is there a separate waiting area for the two types of pets? Can you choose the shampoo? Are nail clippings and anal gland expressions part of the package, or do these services cost extra? Checking about these things ahead of time will spare you the shock and disappointment when you bring your pet. Some groomers do not perform these services. It’s important to know what you can expect. Also, be sure to ask about medical services. What happens if your pet has an emergency while they are at the groomer? Does the groomer have a relationship with the local veterinarian? Another option is a mobile pet groomer. These people have a van with everything they need to groom your pet in front of your house. If traveling is inconvenient, mobile pet groomers might be an option for you.

Bringing Your Pet Prior to scheduling an appointment, bring your pet to their office. Observe the relationship between your pet and the groomer. Are they comfortable with each other? Of course, you know your pet the best. Tell your groomer if your dog is sensitive to having his or her nails trimmed or ears cleaned. Some dogs are terrified of the hair dryer. Mentioning it to your groomer will put everyone at ease. Choose which services you need before your arrival. Sometimes, groomers who work on commission might try to upsell you. Never let them talk you into services you do not need or want. If you are unhappy with the way your pet looks when you pick it up, speak to the groomer right away. It might be due to miscommunication or your pet’s behavior. Most groomers will be sure to fix the problem to your satisfaction immediately. Remember, you can always change your groomer. If you are uncomfortable or your pet seems stressed, look for a new pet groomer. It is important that you and your pet are satisfied with the groomer’s results.

How to Choose a Roofer

P

utting a new roof on your home can increase its value. It is also a necessity in the event of a leakage or if a severe storm has torn shingles off your house. Professional roofing contractors are the most qualified people to perform this work. They will install a new roof safely and effectively. Roofers will provide a warranty for their work. If there are any problems with your new roof in the future, they will fix the problem. Your first step in finding a reliable roofer is to ask your family, friends and neighbors if they have recommendations. You can also look on the Internet for roofing contractors in your area. Some websites offer lists of professionals, along with reviews of their work. Personal recommendations will give you the best information. Be sure to focus on the quality of work as well as the cleanup process. You don’t want scraps of shingles and nails left over after the contractors have gone home. Don’t hire professionals who leave debris after they are gone. Pick someone with a long track record in your community. Some contractors travel the country looking for work. They appear after a community experiences a natural disaster or heavy storm. These contractors are making money from the insurance claims. If you hire one of them, they cannot provide realistic guarantees for their work. After all, they may be on the other side of the country if your roof starts to leak again. Becoming acquainted with local contractors is especially important if you live in an

area prone to high winds or hurricanes. It is good to know who to call if your house needs repair work. Once you have contact information for several roofing contractors, call them. Inquire about the company’s background and how long they have been in business. Generally, a good roofer should offer a guarantee of anywhere from five to 12 years. If the company has been in business for less than five years, it will be difficult to determine the quality of their work. Continue to ask questions about time frames and estimates. You should always get a written estimate before proceeding with any work. Communicating with the contractor will let him know that you will be taking a hands-on approach to this project. Find out if the roofers recommend standard or architectural shingles, what they will do if they find damaged decking, and when they might be available to start. You should also ask about the warranty and whether you can have it confirmed in writing. Every professional who works on your property should be licensed and bonded. Insurance is particularly important for roofing contractors. They should be able to cover any damages they might cause to your property. It is also essential that workers are covered under their insurance as well, in the event someone is injured during the job. Before work commences, you must receive a written contract from the roofer. Read it over carefully. It will state the type of materials to be used, what the work will entail and the final cost. Following these tips will help you find the best roofing contractor in your community. You can rest comfortably knowing that you made the right decision.

How to Choose a Used Car Dealer Buying a used car can be a challenge. You need to find a gently used vehicle without paying more than necessary. You also don’t want to be stuck with a lemon. Avoid purchasing a clunker by doing your research before setting foot in a dealership. Being well-informed will help you avoid unnecessary hardship. Have a good idea of what you want before speaking to anyone. Then follow these tips to find a good used car dealer.

Choose Your Vehicle Knowing what you want will help you save time and effort. You may not know the exact make and model, but at least have an idea of the automobile type. Are you searching for a sports car, SUV, pickup truck or van? Focusing on the type of car will help you avoid wasting time visiting dealerships that don’t sell the the type of used car you need.

Search the “blue book” Figuring out your budget is essential. How much do you want to spend? Search the Kelly Blue Book (http://kbb.com) or the NADA Guides (http://nada.com/) for what you might spend on the type of car you prefer. Also, search the Internet and car websites to get a firm idea of asking prices for your

you about reliable dealers. If they have recently purchased a used car, they will have experience with who treated them right - as well as who didn’t. Word of mouth is one of the best indicators of a reliable business. When you find a business that gets more than one positive review, make sure to check them out.

Don’t purchase a car on the first visit. Just take a business card and move on to the next dealership on your list. Once you have seen everyone on your list, research customer reviews of the ones who impressed you the most. How to Choose a Water Park If you long for a day at the beach and a swim in the ocean, why not recreate that experience at the local water park? Water parks are the perfect family getaway, and they can be an affordable alternative to that beach vacation. The great thing about a water park is that you and the kids can have a great time but do so safely. Water parks typically employ lifeguards and other professionals whose job it is to make sure the entire family has a fun — and safe — time on the water.

Depending on the park, you may be able to purchase annual passes or limited passes that last for a few weeks or months. Ask the water park about their options for passes if you think there is a chance you’ll want to visit more than two or three times during the year. For people who live near a water park, season passes can be a fun and affordable way to enjoy frequent access to the park while keeping your costs fixed. Whether you buy season tickets or just enjoy a one-time visit with your family, a day at the water park is the perfect way to spend your vacation time.

LOCATION While people often think of traveling for vacation, many of today’s budgetconscious families are opting for a “staycation” instead, choosing to save money and time by visiting attractions close to their home. Visiting a water park in or near your hometown can leave you with more money to spend on luxuries and more time to enjoy with your family. The less time you spend in the car or on an airplane, the more time you’ll have to make memories.

RESEARCH If you’re planning a family vacation and want to hit the water parks in the area, it’s a good idea to do some research first. If you have children of varying ages, you’ll want to choose a park that provides attractions suitable for all ages. Some water parks cater to small kids, with lots of fun activities for the little ones but little for the older kids. Other water parks are built to thrill, which might be great for your daredevil teen but not so great for the toddler in your arms. Choosing a park with enough attractions for the whole family is the best way to keep everyone happy. The best ones will have rides suitable for a wide variety of ages and interests. In addition, indoor water parks can be a great option for people in colder climates, giving you a year-round escape no matter the weather — something Mother Nature can never promise at the beach.

RELAXATION You might also want to choose a water park that gives you some down-time while the kids are playing. Some water parks now include special areas designed specifically for parents. The parents can relax and enjoy some quiet time while the kids play nearby. This can be a great perk, especially if you have been busy catering to the young ones all day.

SEASON PASSES If you’re looking for more ways to have fun while saving money, consider buying a season pass to your local water park. For a reasonable rate, you can buy unlimited access for your whole family at most parks, giving you an affordable way to have fun throughout the swimming season.

What to Look for When Buying Windows Gorgeous windows for your home or commercial building can enhance the appearance of the property. It can also increase its value.

People who live in wintery climates should choose replacement windows with strong R-value and U-value ratings to conserve energy.

But weighing functionality, aesthetics, placement, price and efficiency can be daunting. There are a slew of things to consider.

LOW-E

Understanding the terminology used to describe various windows will help you make your decision. Here are common words and phrases you are likely to encounter:

WINDOW GLAZING The actual glass in a window is called glazing. Many homes and older buildings have a single pane of glass within each frame. It is a traditional style; however, it is not energyefficient. Double-glazed windows are the popular option. There are two panes of glass in a frame. The gap between the panes acts as a layer of insulation. It improves the window’s ability to maintain the building’s temperature. Sometimes, newer structures have triple-glazed windows. They are more expensive, but they also provide additional insulation benefits.

R-VALUES R-values measure the amount of heat a window loses through its glass panes. Higher R-values mean more energy efficiency. An R-value of 3 is very desirable.

U-VALUES U-values tell you the level at which a window conducts heat. The lower the U-value, the better.

Low-emissive, or low-e windows are the latest innovations in the energy-efficiency mark. Low-e glass traps heat by placing a thin metallic coating on the appropriate window pane. Indoor radiant heat is reflected back inside, cutting the burden on a building’s heating system. If you live in a cold climate, install a low-e window as a complement to low U-value components. People who live in sunnier, warmer climates can also take advantage of low-e windows. The summer’s higher levels of infrared rays are reflected back outside, keeping the interior of the house cooler.

UV FACTORS Blocking UV rays will spare your carpets and furniture from sun damage. That’s why a window with high ultra-violent blockage is recommended, especially for people who live in warm climates.

CASEMENT WINDOWS When energy efficiency is a key concern, casement windows are the best choice. This simple high-and-crank design lowers air seepage. When the wind pushes against the glass, the seal becomes tight and reduces leakage. Casement windows are hinged on the sides. When the windows have top hinges, they are called awning windows. Hoppers are bottom-hinged windows. Hinged windows must be maintained, as the seal erodes over time. When left unchecked, the erosion can make the window less energy efficient.

OTHER FACTORS Large differences between interior and exterior temperatures create meddlesome condensation on glass. Always choose a window appropriate for your climate. Window placement is another factor when building a new structure. Consider the building’s position and location as they relate to the sun. Windows facing the south let in more heat than north-facing windows. Properly placed, a window can increase a structure’s passive solar efficiency. Extreme temperatures cause frames and seals to deteriorate more quickly. Windows using warm-air technology and adequate spacers reduce temperature fluctuations, placing less strain on seals and framing. Before beginning any improvement project to your home or business, understand the building codes in your area. You may need a permit to do a major windowreplacement project. If you don’t have the required paperwork in order, you might have to pay a fine, remove the work that’s already been done and start over. Knowing basic terminology and concepts before you shop for windows will save you time and money in the long run. It is really less complicated than it looks.

How to Choose a Liquor Store There is no better way to kick back and relax than to surround yourself with good friends and fine beverages. Whether you are planning a celebration or a quiet night among friends, finding a good liquor store can make a big difference. The best shops will provide advice, knowledge and opportunities to buy quality products.

WIDE VARIETY Look for a store that matches your personal preferences. Some shops carry local beer selections from nearby microbreweries. Others stock wines and high-end imported run or scotch. The best stores will have a mixture of popular products, along with some new, rare or exotic offerings. The liquor shop should have a variety of price points. From the most expensive to

investment you make, the more important it is to get expert advice. The best liquor stores will guide you into finding the right product for a specific use or occasion. You should be able to describe the event, along with the flavors or tastes you prefer. Listen to their advice. Good, personalized service may be worth traveling a longer distance. In addition, if you use the same store frequently, they will get to know your preferences and needs. Your experiences will keep improving with each visit.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE Convenience is always a factor, but it isn’t the only thing to consider. Ideally, the shop should be clean, organized and in a safe neighborhood. The best liquor stores take pride in having a tidy appearance, vast selection and sophisticated staff.

Finally, consider the overall shopping experience.

Mixed drinks or baked recipes, for example, don’t always have to include the very best brands because the flavor will be diluted with other ingredients. If you are planning to drink the liquor by itself, however, it is much better to look for a quality brand -- even if it is more expensive.

You’ll want to find a store that’s convenient — typically either close to your home or near your route home from work — but that’s just the start. A properly managed store will take pride in its appearance, selection and employees. Look for a business that stands out from the crowd. If you can find all those things in one store, your enjoyment and relaxation will be even sweeter.

How to Choose a Veterinarian Most people think of their pets as members of their family. In fact, some people even refer to them as fur children. That’s why finding a veterinarian or veterinary clinic is so important. You need to find qualified care to ensure the long-term health of your pet. But in a difficult economy, pet care might get overlooked. Routine care might even seem unnecessary. After all, do humans skip medical and dental check-ups if they seem like they’re in good shape? Unfortunately, pets age faster than human beings. Their bodies and internal systems can change rapidly, sometimes in a matter of a few months. When you take your pet to his doctor regularly, you can catch an illness in its beginning stages. As you know, catching a disease early can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Routine veterinary care will ensure your pet lives a long and happy life. Choosing a good veterinarian that suits you and your pet can seem like a difficult task. If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to find a professional that will give your pet the best care possible.

ASK FOR REFERRALS Your family and friends may know a good veterinarian. Listen to their experiences with a critical ear. You need to find someone who is professional, compassionate and timely. Ask specific questions, such as whether the clinic staff likes animals. Do they respond to concerns in a timely manner? Research veterinary and veterinarian clinics on the Internet. Make a list of prospective candidates, then check with the Better Business Bureau in your state to see if there have been any complaints against these professionals. How were the complaints resolved? Some people need extra services, such as daycare, boarding facilities and pet training. You may also need to have your pet groomed. Find out if the prospective veterinary clinic provides these services.

MAKE A VISIT After making a list of choices, visit the veterinary office or clinic. Call ahead and request a tour of facilities. The staff should have the time to answer your questions. You should see a clean and well-maintained office. Observe how the staff interact with clients and pets. Are they warm toward the animals and owners? The employees should have an affinity for animals. Sit in the waiting area and introduce yourself to other clients. Find out if they are happy with the services and staff. Also, inquire about prices to verify it is within your budget. If you feel uncomfortable during your visit, consider taking your services elsewhere. Finding the best vet for you and your pet will take time and research. You should put the same effort into finding a doctor for your animal as you would in finding one for yourself. The bottom line is that your pet’s health is a cooperative undertaking between you and your veterinarian. Finding the perfect vet for you and your furry, scaly or feathered friend will ensure your pet is with you for years to come.
