Welcome to Hot Springs! Table of Contents We are truly a city of warm water and warm people. Historically, we have the best weather of any city in the state and normally can go out for a picnic or play golf at some time during every month of each year. Hot Springs is full of people willing to make your stay pleasant, however long you choose to be here. Warm water springs create Fall River, that begins near the city and flows through the middle of town. The area springs have contributed immensely to our history, with an emphasis on the healing qualities of the water. Our locally quarried downtown sandstone buildings are special to our citizens and our visitors. Local sandstone was used in construction of the first building at the State Veterans Home in 1889, and the centerpiece building at our VA center constructed in the early 1900’s.

Hot Springs has served veterans for well over a century, and has earned the title of being “The Veterans Town.” Veterans are treated special in Hot Springs, and have been welcomed and included as a part of our community for many years. Hot Springs is located in the southern Black Hills, near many wonderful area attractions making our visitors wish they had more time to enjoy the area. So, welcome to Hot Springs, whether you are here for just a few days, or for the rest of your life. Don De Vries Hot Springs Mayor 605-745-3135 www.hs-sd.org

Local residents are proud to say why they LOVE their hometown! “This community is outstanding!” My husband and I moved our family here eight years ago and haven’t looked back since. T h i s community is outstanding! It is great to surround yourself with great people and friends and Hot Springs has them for sure. It seems as though if you are willing to lend a hand, there are four to five ready to help you if and when you need it. The community comes together whether it be to attend a parade, support the Hot Springs Bison, or help a family in need. - Andrea Kramer, Business Manager

What do I

LOVE

about

“The jewel of the Black Hills!” The weather is perfect, the people are friendly and this is simply a very pretty corner of the world to visit or to make your home, it is truly the jewel of the Black Hills. But don’t take my word for it; come see for yourself! - Curt Nettinga, Newspaper Editor

“Recreational opportunities at your fingertips!” To me it is the people, without a doubt. Don’t get me wrong, this Eastern S.D. native loves the warm, dry climate, the complete lack of bugs and having the entire outdoors and all its recreational opportunities at your fingertips. But this community is filled with caring people. We discovered this when my wife and I moved here several years ago. Everyone was so very welcoming and I still see that today. People stop on the street to let others cross - we don’t fight over the right-of-way at the intersection. And for a small community there are an abundance of activities if you want to become involved. - Randy Meyers, Director of Operations

10❧

“So close to all the main attractions!”

?

Of course I love the weather, but really e n j o y being so close to all of the main at-tractions in the Black Hills. The people are caring and quick to support those who need it. We moved here from Sturgis and let me tell you that 100 miles does make a tremendous difference in the weather! - Bev Keffeler, Administrative Assistant

“Warm, welcoming people.”

Hot Springs has a spirit not captured in larger communities. Folks are friendly and love to share the latest news. The deer and wild turkeys visit our bird feeders, bringing nature into our back yard. If you look up from almost anywhere in town you will have a view of the Seven Sisters range or Battle Mountain. Hot Springs is enclosed by their beauty and serenity. We chose this area because of the mild winters, numerous sunny days, lower humidity, fewer annoying bugs and clean air and water. We also prefer fighting less traffic, even when we visit our neighboring Rapid City. We searched in many places before we settled in Hot Springs, a town of warm, healing mineral waters we enjoy year round at our Evans Plunge and a place of warm, welcoming people. - Mary Goulet, Author, retired

The Hot Springs area features a wide variety of family-friendly activities, including outdoor water sports as shown here at the Angostura Recreation Area.

Fun in the Southern Black Hills All your family’s vacation wants at your fingertips When you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to spend all or part of your vacation this year, you have only to look to the Southern Black Hills and the city of Hot Springs. Hot Springs is the southern gateway to the beautiful and majestic Black Hills. Within minutes you could be looking at one of the unique granite carvings found in the Black Hills, observing some of the native wildlife in its natural state or dropping a line into a lake or stream to catch some of our famous freshwater fish. But to relax, recharge and rejuvenate, Hot Springs is the place to be. Nestled in a valley through which Fall River has flowed for thousands of years, Hot Springs

18❧

is built around the river which gives Fall River County its name. More than 3,700 friendly people call Hot Springs home and many families have lived in the area for several generations. The river itself is fed by some of the many springs which gave Hot Springs its name. The list of things to do during your stay in Hot Springs is lengthy and includes activities sure to interest everyone in the family. Young or old, there is something for everyone in and around Hot Springs. A day for your family could involve waking to the sound of the river, near one of the nearly 30 different Bed and Breakfasts, Resorts, Motels and Campgrounds in the area, many of which are open year-round. After breakfast, the entire family could head to Evans Plunge, the Black Hills’ oldest attraction and the world’s largest natural warm water indoor swimming pool. Evans

Plunge is fed by a 5,000 gallonsper-minute spring that has been flowing for centuries. At that rate, water at “The Plunge” is completely exchanged 16 times per day. Evans Plunge was one of the original businesses in the city, and its founder, Fred T. Evans, lent his name to several other buildings in the city. The numerous springs throughout the area were flowing for centuries before the lure of gold brought miners and the rest of civilization to the Black Hills. Legends tell of a hostile encounter between Lakota and Cheyenne tribes over who controlled the naturally flowing warm waters which flow to this day. If they choose, Mom and Dad could drop the kids off for some fun at the Plunge and make tracks for the Southern Hills Golf Course on the southwestern corner of the city. Eighteen holes of lush fairways and challenging greens

await those who choose to play the course, carved into the rugged landscape near Hot Springs. Southern Hills provides a challenge for golfers of any age or skill level and is considered the “golf destination” in the Black Hills. If you like golf, but on a smaller scale, the entire family could also take in a round of mini-golf at Black Hills’ Putt-4-Fun, located near downtown - look for the tall windmill and red, white and blue fence. After a tasty homecooked lunch at one of the local restaurants, your family fun could move indoors and take a more historic turn at The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs. Once the site of a pre-historic, springfed watering hole, the site

became the grave to more than 60 mammoths some 26,000 years ago, when they slipped into the pool and were unable to get out. During the month of July, excavations take place at the site, as volunteers carefully work around the bones of mammoths and other unfortunate creatures. The bones are left in place at the dig, a process called in situ. Visitors can tour the dig, and get a glimpse of thousands of years of history under one roof. There are also kid’s activities, if they want to get their hands dirty with a little digging. If history is your thing, there is no finer museum in the area than the Pioneer Museum in Hot Springs. Built as a sandstone school house in 1893, the museum

overlooks Hot Springs on a hilltop in the center of town and offers four levels of displays that pay tribute to the Pioneers. One of its most recent acquisitions is a bust sculpted by G u t z o n Borglum, the creator of M o u n t Rushmore. September. Families interested in taking in a little fishing can venture just three miles north of Hot Springs and check out Trout Haven Ranch. Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your fishing poles or tackle - everything is provided and fun is guaranteed. Nearby, there are two state parks, a national memorial, a national monument and one national park, all within minutes of downtown Hot Springs. Angostura State Recreation Area, located just south of Hot Springs, is built around the lake formed by the building of Angostura Dam, on the Cheyenne River, featuring camping, bike trails, boating and fishing. Each year it also hosts the Southern Hills Triathlon, in September. Just north of Hot Spring is Wind Cave National Park, featuring a cave that has more than 118 miles mapped, making it the third-longest cave in the nation. Also of interest if you are a ‘caver’ is the unique boxwork of Wind Cave itself. Above the ground, Wind Cave features wildlife galore, as park visitors will note the large buffalo and huge contingent of prairie dogs, along with coyote, elk, antelope and eagles. Directly north of Wind Cave National Park is Custer State Park, home of the Wildlife Loop (please don’t feed the donkeys, no matter how much they beg), three lakes, four resorts and adventure around each turn in the

The privately-funded project is continued by the widow and children of the great sculptor, who also worked on Mount Rushmore. Visitors can re-connect with nature with a leisurely walk along the Freedom Trail, a sidewalk which meanders along Fall River from one end of the city to the other. Don’t be surprised if you happen across some mule deer or a perhaps our flock of mallard ducks on your journey. Up the hill from the river you will find Butler Park, the center of the Hot Springs outdoor recreation world during the summer, with ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, picnic areas and a new skateboard park providing a backdrop for many outdoor activities. Directly on the south side of Butler Park is the newly constructed Hot Springs Public Library.

The library, which had its grand opening in 2007, boasts a log and stone exterior, and all the amenities you would expect on the inside. In fact, the stonework on the inside of the library is re-claimed from a fire at one of the old sandstone hotels. The marks from the quarry can still be seen on many of the stones. There are seasonal activities planned in Hot Springs as well, and depending upon when you choose to visit you could find yourself attending the crowning of Miss South Dakota, taking in a free concert, rooting for your entry in a duck race or observing some of the top poets and songwriters in the nation. The 68th Miss South Dakota will be crowned in Hot Springs on June 21, with activities slated throughout the week, leading up to Saturday night. Hot Springs has been the home of Miss South Dakota since the scholarship program began. Throughout the month of July, the Evans Porch

Evans Plunge was the Black Hills’ first attraction in 1890 and is still going strong by entertaining families with warm water fun. Concert Series takes place outdoors on the front porch of the landmark Evans Hotel, or, weather permitting, across the street at the Kidney Springs Bandshell. This free concert offers a wide variety of music to concertgoers. The Chamber of Commerce Duck Race is one of the many events which

take place during the Fourth of July Celebration in Hot Springs. Thousands of ducks are released and leisurely float down Fall River until one crosses the finish line. The summer season winds up with the annual Badger Clark Hometown Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering, a unique event harkening

Family fun in the great outdoors stone buildings which are listed on the National Historic Register and are located across the river. Along the trail you’ll likely see ducks, squirrels, deer and dogs on leashes. But if “wilder” wildlife is more your thing, Hot Springs is only minutes away from two prime wildlife viewing areas. Just north of Hot Spring is Wind Cave National Park, featuring a cave with more than 118 miles of its interior mapped, making it the third-longest cave in the nation. In addition, Wind Cave is also home to an unparalleled bison herd along with many other native wildlife. The nearly genetically pure bison are coveted by those national organizations building their herd. Directly north of Wind Cave National Park is Custer State Park, home of the Wildlife Loop and many other fun, family outdoor activities. Custer State Park was recognized as one of the Top-10 places in the world to view wildlife. The year-around path through downtown Hot Springs meanders along Fall River, a warm water source that never freezes. Springs is known for its water activities, including boating, swimming, skiing, snorkeling and of course fishing at any of its bodies of water including Angostura Recreation Area and Resort, Cold Brook Dam, Cottonwood Springs and Cascade Falls, to name a few. Many of these areas also provide great fishing. Angostura Reservoir is home to a number of walleye tournaments each year, but in addition to walleye, it is also a great place to catch smallmouth bass, crappie, and northern pike. The lake features many sandy beaches and a number of campsites, as well as camping cabins. Cold Brook Dam, located just three miles north of Hot Springs, is routinely stocked with rainbow trout and also holds largemouth bass, as well as the occasional crappie or bluegill. For boaters, only electric motors are allowed on the lake, but there are plenty of spots on the shore to try your luck as well. Cold Brook also features a sandy swim beach and campsites. Whitetail and Mule deer are the most prevalent big game animals. Hot Springs is situated in the heart of two South Dakota deer hunting season units, including the Black Hills Deer Season, which runs the entire month of November, and the West River Prairie Season, which runs the second weekend of November through the fourth weekend. Rocky Mountain Elk are the largest of the region's big game animals. Hunting elk in the Black Hills is open to South Dakota residents only, with bow and rifle seasons occurring during September, October and December. Pronghorn antelope season takes place in October in the prairie areas of Fall River County to the south of Hot Springs, where the ancient yet speedy animals can be found in abundance. Turkey hunting is arguably Hot Springs' greatest outdoor draw for hunting enthusiasts. The area features both Fall and Spring seasons, for both the Prairie and Black Hills units. Other big game season available to hunters in the Black Hills region include Mountain Lion, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goat. A city built on healing Hot Springs is a city with a history built on its healing waters. Hot Springs was the Black Hills’ first tourist destination, and with good reason. The springs that feed Fall River as it meanders through the heart of the city are running today, just as they were more than 130 years ago. With the healing powers of the naturally flowing warm springs – the water comes out of the ground at a constant 87 degrees – it was no surprise that a town sprouted by the river that still boasts water with the same healing chemical makeup as it did when the town was founded. When the railroad began unloading passengers at the Hot Springs Train Depot in 1891, the town’s future was decided. From the mineral water’s

with both the Hot Springs VA Medical Center, as well as the South Dakota State Veterans’Home serving the needs of the men and women who served their country. During the fall of 2013, a new State Veterans Home broke ground. The new building will feature the most up-todate practices while blending with the asthetic presence of the sandstone buildings that are more than 100 years old. Fall River Health Services operates and the Fall River Hospital, offering a wide array of specialty clinics. An optometrist, three chiropractors and several medical clinics serve the community and region. New in 2014 will be the relocation of Castle Manor Nursing Home, a branch of Fall River Health Services, to a place near the hospital south of town. Also underway are plans for a new home for the local ambulance service, also near the hospital.

BIG CITY If you are looking for a new place to call home, Hot Springs has the amenities of larger towns, while still hanging onto the small-town, stress-free, relaxed atmosphere for which everyone seems to be searching these days. Not sure? Let’s start with the scenery. The Black Hills as a whole offer a wide range of beauty, with numerous exploring options for your free time. But the Hills begin in Hot Springs, the Southern Gateway to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Rugged, pine-tree covered hills give way gently to rolling plains, as centuries of geological work below the ground created one of the prettiest places in the world to call home. Then there is the weather. Now, South Dakota is renowned for its harsh winters, there is no getting around it. Hot Springs, however, is the home of the highest average annual temperature in the state, boasting an average temp of 64 degrees, which tells you that even though

Hot Springs is home to the state’s highest average temperature of 64 degrees, with warm dry summers and mild winters averaging less than 30 inches of snow per year. winter does pass through, it rarely makes a lengthy stay. Snowfall averages less than 30 inches per year, and in a warmerthan-average climate, doesn’t stick around very long. As we are situated down in the Fall River valley, snow comes down softly and gently, as opposed to the ‘horizontal snow’ often associated with the state. There is a reason why the rest of the state enviously calls us

“The Banana Belt.” The city itself follows the path of Fall River as it meanders through the valley in which it has flowed for many centuries. Hot Springs is situated 3,535 feet above sea level. What that means is that even when it gets warmer during the summer, there is very little humidity. Have kids? Hot Springs has a highly regarded public school system, offering top-notch edu-

cation for students pre-school through high school. In addition, Bethesda Lutheran is a private elementary school with church ties, while Cornerstone Bible Institute offers post-high school education. Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City, the only technical school in western South Dakota, maintains a satellite campus as well in Hot Springs. The city’s new library opened in 2007, featuring log-cabin and natural stone construction. While the building may have a rustic look, inside everything is cutting edge, with several computers for Internet access, a special children’s wing and an entire room dedicated to the vast and wideranging history of Fall River County. The library is across the street from Butler Park, the largest of our five city parks. Butler Park has four ball fields to occupy the kids during the spring, summer and fall. There are baseball,

There are two large picnic shelters that are popular destinations throughout the year. Construction on a new skateboard park was completed in 2006. Other

city parks are sprinkled throughout the town, most in close proximity to the river, with picnic shelters to accommodate your family, when they come to visit you after your move. The walking path, named the Freedom Trail, meanders through the city next to the river, where you are

likely to see ducks and deer year-round. Hot Springs boasts a highly competitive 18-hole golf course, a mini-golf course, a bowling alley, movie theater and swimming pool. Situated at the southern tip of South Dakota’s Black Hills, Hot Springs is accessed via U.S. Highways 18 and 385, as well as State Highways 79, 71 and 89, making travel a breeze. The nearest ‘big’ town is Rapid City, an hour to the north on a four-lane highway while Chadron, Neb., is the same distance south. So even in the event you can’t find it here, chances are it’s not too far away. Rapid City and Chadron are also the nearest major air service outlets. Hot Springs does have an airport southeast of town, with a hard surfaced runway and taxiway. The new hospital, a true expression of a community project, offers a wide range of specialty clinics. Land near town was donated by an individual for the express purpose of a hospital. In an unprecedented happening, local contractors banded together to install – free of charge - water and sewer lines to the hospital. To ease the burden on the contractors, a community-wide donation drive netted enough cash to offset other costs to the contractors. Hot Springs is home to Pine Hills Retirement Community and assisted living facility adjacent to the golf course, offering one or two-bedroom apartments and beautiful view for its residents.

The Hot Springs VA Medical Center noted its 105th Anniversary in 2012 and continues to offer healthcare to the veterans of our country’s armed services. The Hot Springs VA serves a large portion of western South Dakota, northwestern Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. It is also the area’s largest employer, followed by Fall River Health Services, which operates the hospital and Castle Manor Nursing Home. The community has also been home to the South Dakota State Veterans Home since 1890. Many of its earliest residents were veterans of the Civil War, several of which are buried at the historical cemetery on the grounds. Hot Springs has a positive work atmosphere. Unemployment rates are low, 4.8 percent as of December 2008. The average annual pay for workers in Fall River County was $28,149. Real estate in the area is still considered a bargain, compared to other sites in the Black Hills. A number of development areas are available both within the city limits, or just outside if you are looking to build among the pine-covered hills. The Hot Springs Star is one of the oldest newspapers in the state, publishing weekly throughout the year, and offering an online version (hotspringsstar.com) for those looking for information about the area. Hot Springs, a welcoming community that looks forward to welcoming you.
