The Battle Mountain Sanitarium, located on a hill in the center of town, has been home to the Hot Springs VA Medical Center for more than a century and helped establish the community as ‘The Veterans Town.’

American Veterans Traveling Tribute to pay visit to ‘The Veterans Town’ In 2013, a nationally recognized memorial will make a stop in Hot Springs, when the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) comes to town. The tribute will arrive in Hot Springs on July 31 and will occupy a large part of the parking lot near Centennial Park, with additional memorial offers at the Mueller Civic Center. It is set to remain in place through Aug. 4, coinciding with the Fall River Freedom Ride, which benefits the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota State Veterans Home, right here in Hot Springs. The AVTT includes an 80 percent replica of the original Vietnam Wall, which is part of the collection of Veterans Memorials on the Mall in Washington, D.C. It is only fitting that it comes to Hot Springs, the town that has earned the title “The Veterans’ Town,”for its dedication to the healing of our nation’s fighting men and women, for more than 100 years. The wall itself measures 360-feet in length, and is accompanied by 190 running feet of additional display that honors all veterans and those serving in the armed forces today. A history built on water:

Hot Springs was the Black Hills’ first tourist destination

One of the main features of downtown Hot Springs is the waterfall found along the Freedom Trail.

The community of Hot Springs is celebrating its 127th Anniversary in 2013. Originally called Minnekahta (warm waters) by the white settlers in 1879, the town’s name was changed to Hot Springs in 1886. Earlier, the Lakota and the Cheyenne Indian tribes fought for control of the natural warm waters. Legends tell of a hostile encounter waged in the hills high above the gurgling springs on a peak called Battle Mountain. Spurred by a vast range and tall grass, ranchers staked their bankroll on cattle and helped build the town of Hot Springs. Merchants sold their wares, and by 1890 local residents such as businessman Fred Evans and others of entrepreneurial spirit embarked on an ambitious plan to turn the whole town into a health spa. Evans built the Evans Plunge over a group of small springs and one giant thermal spout of warm mineral water. When the railroad began unloading passengers at the Hot Springs Train Depot in 1891, the town’s future was secured. From the mineral water’s mist rose elaborate sandstone buildings, and proprietors provided all manner of services and goods. Surrounded by rugged canyons and pine-covered hills, the town of 3,700 boasts a wide range of attractions, many of which are open year round. And it all started with warm-water springs.

Fun in the Southern Black Hills All your family’s vacation wants at your fingertips

18❤

When you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to spend all or part of your vacation this year, you have only to look to the Southern Black Hills and the city of Hot Springs. But that doesn’t mean that there is a lack of activities in the Hot Springs area; quite the opposite is true. Hot Springs is the southern gateway to the beautiful and majestic Black Hills. Within minutes you could be looking at one of the unique granite carvings found in the Black Hills, observing some of the native wildlife in its natural state or dropping a line into a lake or stream to catch some of our famous freshwater fish. But to relax, recharge and rejuvenate, Hot Springs is the

place to be. Nestled in a valley through which Fall River has flowed for thousands of years, Hot Springs is built around the river which gives Fall River County its name. More than 3,700 friendly people call Hot Springs home and many families have lived in the area for several generations. The river itself is fed by some of the many springs which gave Hot Springs its name. The list of things to do during your stay in Hot Springs is lengthy and includes activities sure to interest everyone in the family. Young or old, there is something for everyone in and around Hot Springs. A day for your family could involve waking to the sound of the river, near one of the nearly 30 different Bed and Breakfasts, Resorts, Motels and Campgrounds in the area, many of which are open year-round. After breakfast, the entire family could head to Evans

Plunge, the Black Hills’ oldest attraction and the world’s largest natural warm water indoor swimming pool. Evans Plunge is fed by a 5,000 gallons-perminute spring that has been flowing for centuries. At that rate, water at “The Plunge” is completely exchanged 16 times per day. Evans Plunge was one of the original businesses in the city, and its founder, Fred T. Evans, lent his name to several other buildings in the city. The numerous springs throughout the area were flowing for centuries before the lure of gold brought miners and the rest of civilization to the Black Hills. Legends tell of a hostile encounter between Lakota and Cheyenne tribes over who controlled the naturally flowing warm waters which flow to this day. Several of the local spas offer a soak in the water – believed by Native Americans to have healing properties – in addition to

enjoying a professional massage, guaranteed to relieve stress and make your time here more relaxing. If they choose, Mom and Dad could drop the kids off for some fun at the Plunge and make tracks for the Southern Hills Golf Course on the southwestern corner of the city. Eighteen holes of lush fairways and challenging greens await those who choose to play the course, carved into the rugged landscape near Hot Springs. Southern Hills provides a challenge for golfers of any age or skill level and is considered the “golf destination”in the Black Hills. If you like golf, but on a smaller scale, the entire family could also take in a round of mini-golf at Black Hills’ Putt-4-Fun, located near downtown - look for the tall windmill and red, white and blue fence. After a tasty homecooked lunch at one of the local restaurants, your family fun could move indoors and take a more historic turn at The Mammoth Site

The Pioneer Museum is considered one of the finest museums in the region and is located in an 1893 sandstone school house on a hill in the center of town. of Hot Springs. Once the site of a pre-historic, springfed watering hole, the site became the grave to more than 60 mammoths some 26,000 years ago, when they slipped into the pool and were unable to get out. During the month of July, excavations take place at the site, as volunteers carefully work around the bones of mammoths and other unfortunate creatures. The bones are left in place at the dig, a process called in situ. Visitors can tour the dig,

and get a glimpse of thousands of years of history under one roof. There are also kid’s activities, if they want to get their hands dirty with a little digging. If history is your thing, there is no finer museum in the area than the Pioneer Museum in Hot Springs. Built as a sandstone school house in 1893, the museum overlooks Hot Springs on a hilltop in the center of town and offers four levels of displays that pay tribute to the Pioneers. One of its most recent acquisitions is a bust sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, the creator of Mount Rushmore. While you are downtown, take a few minutes to stroll historic North River Street, with its unique collection of sandstone buildings, many of which are more than 100 years old. Revel in the different styles of architecture and visit some of the shops that now call these historic buildings home and offer anything from books, gifts, decor, antiques and Black Hills Gold, to name a few. You’ll

also be sure to find a nice place for a bite to eat or a cup of coffee, either hot or cold. While venturing downtown, by either foot or wheeled locomotion, be sure and check out one of the art galleries featuring many original works by locally and nationally known artists. The Shaman Gallery, located across from the waterfall, is located in the restored Morris Grand Theater and is South Dakota’s Original Fine Art Gallery. There is not a better way to end your fun-filled day than an evening tour of the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary. Located south of Hot Springs and nestled next to the Cheyenne River, Dayton Hyde has built a sanctuary for the freeroaming wild horses on more than 11,000 acres of prairie. The sanctuary is also home to a wide array of other wildlife. Tourist busses get visitors ‘up close and personal’ with the wild mustang which contributed a great deal to the building

of the American west. Another area attraction also featuring horses is the Windcross Conservancy, near Buffalo Gap, which is home to the endangered Spanish Mustangs of North America. The non-profit agency offers educational tours May through September. Families interested in taking in a little fishing can venture just three miles north of Hot Springs and check out Trout Haven Ranch. Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your fishing poles or tackle - everything is provided and fun is guaranteed. Nearby, there are two state parks, a national memorial, a national monument and one national park, all within minutes of downtown Hot Springs. Angostura State Recreation Area, located just south of Hot Springs, is built around the lake formed by the building of Angostura Dam, on the Cheyenne River, featuring camping, bike trails, boating and fishing. Each year it also hosts the Southern Hills Triathlon, in September. Just north of Hot Spring is Wind Cave National Park, featuring a cave that has more than 118 miles mapped, making it the third-longest cave in the nation. Also of interest if you are a ‘caver’ is the unique boxwork of Wind Cave itself. Above the ground, Wind Cave features wildlife galore, as park visitors will note the large buffalo and huge contingent of prairie dogs, along with coyote, elk,

extensively when the town was built, including the VA facility and the State Veteran’s Home. Visitors can re-connect with nature with a leisurely walk along the Freedom Trail, a sidewalk which meanders along Fall River from one end of the city to the other. Don’t be surprised if you happen across some mule deer or a perhaps our flock of mallard ducks on your journey. Up the hill from the river you will find Butler Park, the center of the Hot Springs outdoor recreation world during the summer, with ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, picnic areas and a new skateboard park providing a backdrop for many outdoor activities.

viding a backdrop for many outdoor activities. Directly on the south side of Butler Park is the newly constructed Hot Springs Public Library. The library, which had its grand opening in 2007, boasts a log and stone exterior, and all the amenities you would expect on the inside. In fact, the stonework on the inside of the library is re-claimed from a fire at one of the old sandstone hotels. The marks from the quarry can still be seen on many of the stones. There are seasonal activities planned in Hot Springs as well, and depending upon when you choose to visit you could find yourself attending the crowning of Miss South Dakota, taking in a free concert, rooting for your entry in a duck race or observing some of the top poets and songwriters in the nation. The 67th Miss South Dakota will be crowned in Hot Springs on June 29, with activities slated throughout the week, leading up to Saturday night.

Evans Plunge was the Black Hills’ first attraction in 1890 and is still going strong by entertaining families with warm water fun. Hot Springs has been the home of Miss South Dakota since the scholarship program began. Throughout the month of July, the Evans Porch Concert Series takes place outdoors on the front porch of the landmark Evans Hotel, or, weather permitting, across the street at the Kidney Springs Bandshell. This free concert offers a wide variety of music to concertgoers. The Chamber of Commerce Duck

Race is one of the many events which take place during the Fourth of July Celebration in Hot Springs. Thousands of ducks are released and leisurely float down Fall River until one crosses the finish line. The summer season winds up with the annual Badger Clark Hometown Cowboy and Music Poetry Gathering, a unique event harkening back to the heritage of the cowboys who built this country.

What are your taste buds cravin’? One of the great things about being on vacation, no matter where you go, is getting to try new places to eat. Some of us are more adventurous than others, but here in the Southern Hills, variety is abundant and the tastiest tidbit for any palate is right around the corner. To get you up and out the door in the morning, pop into one of the family cafes in town. Whether you

are an eggs and hashbrowns lover, or maybe crave something a little more on the pancake side of things, it’s all here. Maybe you are more used to grabbing a cup of coffee and heading out the door to get your day underway. No problem. Hot Springs boasts top flight coffee stops with as many different combinations as you can imagine..

Hot Springs offers a variety of dining options, including some downtown locations with outdoor seating. Grab a fresh-baked pastry or doughnut at the same time. For lunch, all the

fresh fixings for a delicious picnic outdoors is available from one of our grocery stores , or

maybe you are more the sit-down type, taking a break after a busy morning. Grilled burgers, sumptuous sandwiches and tasty salads are ready to be served up quickly, to get you back out and enjoying your vacation. When evening rolls around, relax with a juicy T-bone or a tantalizing ribeye – you are in cattle country you know - or maybe some BBQ ribs or a slice of freshly baked pizza would be more to your liking. And don’t worry; if you don’t get a chance to try something today, there is always tomorrow!

Family fun in the great outdoors When it comes to relaxing, free family entertainment in Hot Springs, don’t overlook the opportunities right downtown by taking a bicycle ride, a walk, a run or a roll on the Freedom Trail “River Walk” which is where the locals go! This 1.3 mile paved and lighted trail is ADA compliant, welcoming motorized wheelchairs, scooters and conveyances for the disabled. All other motorized vehicles are forbidden. With four bridges along the route, entering or exiting at various points is convenient. The year-around path through downtown Hot Springs meanders along Fall River, a warm water source that never freezes. Public restrooms are available at the Mueller Center during business and activity hours and at Centennial Park a little over half way along

the pathway. The southern end starts behind the Mueller Center, 801 S. 6th St., where visitor information, maps and brochures are available inside. Just behind the Mueller Center are Veterans Memorial Plaza and the Freedom Trail head. The northern end of the route is located across the river from the veranda of the Evans. The walk showcases several blocks of sandstone buildings which are listed on the National Historic Register and are located across the river. Along the trail you’ll likely see ducks, squirrels, deer and dogs on leashes. But if “wilder”wildlife is more your thing, Hot Springs is only minutes away from two prime wildlife viewing areas. Just north of Hot Spring is Wind Cave National Park, featuring a cave with more than

In addition, Wind Cave is also home to an unparalleled bison herd along with many other native wildlife. In 2013 Wind Cave National Park will be noting the 100th anniversary of the beginning of its bison herd. The Wind Cave bison are unique as they have very little beef DNA in their gene pool. The nearly genetically pure bison are coveted by those national organizations building their herd. And when it comes to sporting activities in Hot Springs, there’s no denying the highly acclaimed Southern Hills Golf Course - considered “The Black Hills Premiere Golf Destination.” Eighteen holes of lush fairways and challenging greens await those who choose to play the course described by Golf Week as one of the country’s “Best Places to Play”from 2000-2012. But if you prefer to keep your driver in the bag, and use only your trusty putter, Hot Springs also has its own miniature golf course called Black Hills Putt4-Fun, located next to the Budget Host Hills Inn.

Outdoor activities abound in Hot Springs Angostura Reservoir is home to a number of walleye tournaments each year and is known for its occasional “wall hanger”catch. In addition to walleye, it is also a great place to catch smallmouth bass, crappie, and northern pike. The lake also features many sandy beaches and a number of camp sites, as well as camping cabins. Cold Brook Dam, located just three miles north of Hot Springs, is routinely stocked with rainbow trout. It is not unusual for a fisherman to pull out a once in a lifetime lunker. In addition to the unbelievable trout fishing, it is also a good spot to catch largemouth bass, as well as an occasional crappie or bluegill. For boaters, only electric motors are allowed on the lake, but there are plenty of spots on the shore to try your luck as well. Cold Brook also features a sandy swim beach and campsites. Cottonwood Springs Dam is located six miles west of Hot Springs and is very similar to Cold Brook Dam, featuring both trout and bass. Camping is also available. Whitetail Deer and Mule Deer are the most prevalent Big Game animals with both species found in abundance throughout the area. A city built on healing Hot Springs is a city with a history built on its healing waters. Hot Springs was the Black Hills’ first tourist destination, and with good reason. The springs that feed Fall River as it meanders through the heart of the city are running today, just as they were more than 130 years ago. The area was originally called ‘Minnekahta’or ‘warm waters’ by the white settlers when they arrived in 1879. For decades before, the Lakota and the Cheyenne Indian tribes who were the first people to live in the area, fought for control of the natural warm waters. Legends tell of a hostile encounter waged in the hills high above the gur gling springs on a peak called Battle Mountain. When the railroad began unloading passengers at the Hot Springs Train Depot in 1891, the town’s future was decided. From the mineral water’s mist rose elaborate sandstone buildings, and proprietors provided all manner of services and goods. Around that same time, more than 100 years ago, the precursor to today’s Department of Veterans Affairs saw fit to build the Battle Mountain Sanitarium in this tranquil and healing area. That healing continues today, with both the Hot Springs VA Medical Center, as well as the South Dakota State Veterans’ Home serving the needs of the men and women who served their country. During the summer and fall of 2013, a new State Veterans Home is expected to break ground. The new building will feature the most up-todate practices while blending with the asthetic presence of the sandstone buildings that are more than 100 years old. Fall River Health Services operates and the Fall River Hospital, offering a wide array of specialty clinics. BIG CITY If you are looking for a new place to call home, Hot Springs has the amenities of larger towns, while still hanging onto the small-town, stress-free, relaxed atmosphere for which everyone seems to be searching these days. Not sure? Let’s start with the scenery. The Black Hills as a whole offer a wide range of beauty, with numerous exploring options for your free time. But the Hills begin in Hot Springs, the Southern Gateway to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Rugged, pine-tree covered hills give way gently to rolling plains, as centuries of geological work below the ground created one of the prettiest places in the world to call home. Then there is the weather. Now, South Dakota is renowned for its harsh winters, there is no getting around it. Hot Springs, however, is the home of the highest average annual temperature in the state, boasting an average temp of 64 degrees, which tells you that even though

winter does pass through, it rarely makes a lengthy stay. Snowfall averages less than 30 inches per year, and in a warmerthan-average climate, doesn’t stick around very long. As we are situated down in the Fall River valley, snow comes down softly and gently, as opposed to the ‘horizontal snow’ often associated with the state. There is a reason why the rest of the state enviously calls us

“The Banana Belt.” The city itself follows the path of Fall River as it meanders through the valley in which it has flowed for many centuries. Hot Springs is situated 3,535 feet above sea level. What that means is that even when it gets warmer during the summer, there is very little humidity. Have kids? Hot Springs has a highly regarded public school system, offering top-notch edu-

In addition, Bethesda Lutheran is a private elementary school with church ties, while Cornerstone Bible Institute offers post-high school education. Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City, the only technical school in western South Dakota, maintains a satellite campus as well in Hot Springs. The city’s new library opened in 2007, featuring log-cabin and natural stone construction. While the building may have a rustic look, inside everything is cutting edge, with several computers for Internet access, a special children’s wing and an entire room dedicated to the vast and wideranging history of Fall River County. The library is across the street from Butler Park, the largest of our five city parks. Butler Park has four ball fields to occupy the kids during the spring, summer and fall. There are baseball,

likely to see ducks and deer year-round. Hot Springs boasts a highly competitive 18-hole golf course, a mini-golf course, a bowling alley, movie theater and swimming pool. Situated at the southern tip of South Dakota’s Black Hills, Hot Springs is accessed via U.S. Highways 18 and 385, as well as State Highways 79, 71 and 89, making travel a breeze. The nearest ‘big’ town is Rapid City, an hour to the north on a four-lane highway while Chadron, Neb., is the same distance south. So even in the event you can’t find it here, chances are it’s not too far away. Rapid City and Chadron are also the nearest major air service outlets. Hot Springs does have an airport southeast of town, with a hard surfaced runway and taxiway. The new hospital, a true expression of a community project, offers a wide range of specialty clinics. Land near town was donated by an individual for the express purpose of a hospital. In an unprecedented happening, local contractors banded together to install – free of charge - water and sewer lines to the hospital. To ease the burden on the contractors, a community-wide donation drive netted enough cash to offset other costs to the contractors. Hot Springs is home to Pine Hills Retirement Community and assisted living facility adjacent to the golf course, offering one or two-bedroom apartments and beautiful view for its residents.

The Hot Springs VA Medical Center noted its 105th Anniversary in 2012 and continues to offer healthcare to the veterans of our country’s armed services. The Hot Springs VA serves a large portion of western South Dakota, northwestern Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. It is also the area’s largest employer, followed by Fall River Health Services, which operates the hospital and Castle Manor Nursing Home. The community has also been home to the South Dakota State Veterans Home since 1890. Many of its earliest residents were veterans of the Civil War, several of which are buried at the historical cemetery on the grounds. Hot Springs has a positive work atmosphere. Unemployment rates are low, 4.8 percent as of December 2008. The average annual pay for workers in Fall River County was $28,149. Real estate in the area is still considered a bargain, compared to other sites in the Black Hills. A number of development areas are available both within the city limits, or just outside if you are looking to build among the pine-covered hills. The Hot Springs Star is one of the oldest newspapers in the state, publishing weekly throughout the year, and offering an online version (hotspringsstar.com) for those looking for information about the area.
