Welcome to the Pumpkin Post and to the Fifth Annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival! In this edition of the Pumpkin Post, you’ll discover all that awaits you and your family at the festival. The Pumpkin Festival planning committee and the Rapid City Downtown Association invite you to spend Saturday, Sept. 28, at this family-friendly event. See you there! inspired activities. The RCDA represents its members through collaborative promotion, support and advocacy. For more than four decades, RCDA has been leading the way for Downtown promotion. To learn more about RCDA, visit www.downtownrapidcity.com.

The crowd oohs and aahs as a gourd smashes to the ground in the Pumpkin Chuckin’ at Memorial Park in 2012. Student teams from

the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will don costumes and compete in this year’s activity, sponsored by RESPEC.

Catapulting pumpkins: a test of physics 3... 2... 1... Students dressed in capes and helmets release a trigger sending a orange gourd sailing through the air. The crowd watches as it arcs up, then gravity takes hold and pulls it to the ground, smashing the pumpkin into tiny bits and pieces. Teams from the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Production (CAMP) at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology star in Pumpkin Chuckin’ on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. in Memorial Park. The pumpkin catapult challenge pits team against team in a showdown of gourd flying fun. Teams are tested on accuracy, attempting to land pumpkins inside of hula hoops. The final challenge is on distance, however, the machines are calibrated so the gourds do not fly over the barrier fence. CAMP composes of engineering students who focus on competitions that involve the most exclusive engineering schools in the country. The cocurricular program provides hands-on, student-centered opportunities that in-

tegrate academics with student affairs. Importance is placed on great technical designs coupled with creative concepts, and allows students to approach engineering in a nonlinear way. CAMP encourages community in-

volvement and giving back. Students welcome public events that offer a chance to broaden their education beyond the classroom. For more information about CAMP, visit www.camp-sdmines.com.

The crowd clapped to the rhythm before heading off to enjoy their day in Downtown Rapid City. The Rapid City Firefighter Pipe and Drum Corps will also be on hand with their drums and bagpipes. Following the presentation, the groups will march down Sixth Street, leading event attendees to Memorial Park, where the Pumpkin Chuckin’ begins at 10 a.m. The demonstration is sponsored by Summer Nights.

Giant gourds weighed and measured In the wee hours of Saturday, Sept. 28, giant pumpkins can be seen in pick-up beds and on trailers heading to Downtown Rapid City for the fifth annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival. The large gourds are a sight to see, as they are hauled off trailers and wheeled around the weigh-off area by volunteers in bright orange shirts. The weigh-off begins at 11 a.m. and you won’t want to miss the competition. The pumpkin festival is a certified Great Pumpkin Com-

monwealth weigh-off site, where the pumpkins are carefully inspected, measured and weighed. Cash prizes go to the top gourds. A pumpkin weighing 950 pounds won the weigh-off in 2012. Matt Winey, of Rapid City, grew a 608-pound pumpkin for second place, and the third place pumpkin weighed in at 556 pounds, raised in Oakes, ND, by Gary Rodine. Shannon Williams, of Rapid City, won fourth place with a 468-pound pumpkin that she donated for food. Her grandpa, John Williams, of Rapid City, received fifth place with a 274-pound pumpkin. Winey won the largest squash competition, with the gourd weighing 250 pounds. Rodine won the Howard Dill Award for the prettiest pumpkin, and Emily Wahl, of Rapid City, won the ugliest pumpkin award for a 244-pound pumpkin. The King of Rock n’ Roll makes an appearance

Question & Answer

By Rhea Landholm The King is back. Elvis, the King of Rock n’ Roll, will meet and greet event attendees from 1 to 3 p.m., and crone at 3 p.m. on the stage sponsored by Hotel Alex Johnson. He took time out of his busy touring schedule to answer a few questions. Q: What will you be wearing at the event? A: Something sparkly, you’ll have to show up to see!

A: Still got ‘em, I bought them in Memphis from Bernard Lansky who’s been selling clothes to Elvis since the 1950s, he waited on me himself, turned up my collar and said, “Thank You, Thank You Very Much!” He said he used to say that to Elvis. Q: Where is your favorite place to give a concert? A: Downtown Rapid City and Main Street Square, of course!

Q: How long does it take to do your hair? A: Depending on the wind, 10 to 20 minutes.

Q: What is the best part about performing? A: Helping and seeing people have fun and enjoy themselves. Smiles and laughter.

Q: Do you still have Blue Suede Shoes?

Q: What songs do your audiences like the most?

Elvis performs at last year’s Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival. Look for the King and his hound dog from 1 to 3 p.m.

A: Jailhouse Rock gets ‘em goin’, runners-up are Blue Suede Shoes, Teddy Bear, All Shook Up and Burnin’ Love. Q: What do you like best about the Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival? A: The sense of community and seeing friends and fans get together to enjoy life and have fun. Q: Will you have your Hound Dog with you at the Pumpkin Festival? A: My hound dog Mya will be there. Weather permitting, she may be in costume, too. She is friendly and loves back massages. She will be

accompanied by Susan who is also friendly and rarely bites! Q: Can people take their photo with you? A: Certainly, there is no charge but just get my good side! The hound dog is all business though and may charge a fee or request a treat or back massage. Q: One final question, what does it take to be All Shook Up? A: A fried peanut butter and banana sandwich and a dozen jelly doughnuts with a glass of whole milk!

By Bill Keck, Pumpkin Festival Committee Member Known as the “pumpkin church” of Rapid City, Canyon Lake United Methodist Church offers train rides, storytelling and a pumpkin maze to nearly 1,000 preschoolers annually at their church, located at 3500 Canyon Lake Drive. The Pumpkin Patch is open daily from noon to dusk in October. Members bring their activities on the road, offering a pumpkin patch and free pumpkin train rides at the Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival on Sept. 28. The Pumpkin Patch fundraiser began 34 years ago when Richard Hamby, a farmer in North Carolina, met a minister with a need to raise funds for his church. On faith and a hand shake, Hamby agreed to let the church sell the pumpkins and share the profit.

In 1989, when Hurricane Hugo hit the East Coast, the crop was destroyed, but Hamby kept his promise to the local church and found beautiful pumpkins on the Navajo Reservation in Farmington, N.M. The next year, Hamby made an agreement with the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry to grow pumpkins. Today, the Pumpkin Patch organization leases the land and pays for seed, cultivation, fertilizer, irrigation, labor and trucking in order to provide a riskfree fundraising opportunity for more than 1,300 churches of 30 denominations in 48 states. One of the churches that receives pumpkins is the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, in Rapid City. We invite you to stop by the festival to select your special pumpkin. Proceeds from the sale support various youth ministry programs at the church.

Downtown chefs go knife to knife

A battle of culinary skills will ensue on Main Street Square’s stage on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 2 to 3 p.m. Downtown Rapid City chefs will compete for a first place prize, and most importantly, bragging rights, in the second annual Downtown Chef Competition. Participating chefs are Jeff Butler from Murphy’s Pub and Grill, Jon Fearon of Enigma Restaurant, Sarah Luke from Hotel Alex Johnson, Chris McConnell from Wine Cellar Restaurant, Carlos Osario from The Blind Lion (the speakeasy under Murphy’s), Dave Pszanka from Isis Hospitality, and Julie Smoragiewicz from Dakota Thyme. Each chef is required to prepare a dish with pumpkin as an ingredient. The gourd may star in the dish, or it may have a supporting role. The dishes will be prepared at the downtown establishments, and are to arrive on stage at 2 p.m., where judges’ palates will be ready to sample the foods. The judges will describe the dishes to the audience, and give comments to the chefs. The public is not able to sample at the event, however, the Rapid City Downtown Association has encouraged each chef to serve the dish in their restaurants, and recipes will be made available. The challenge is sponsored by Someone’s In The Kitchen and US Bank.

2012 Downtown Chef Challenge winner Aaron Richards distributes Caramelized Pumpkin Spring rolls to the judges.
