Chadron was named after fur trader Louis B. Chartran Chadron is named for Louis B. Chartran, a manager of a fur trading post built in 1841 near what is now the city reservoirs south of town. The creek that runs nearby is named on early maps as Chartran’s Creek. The name was pronounced by French settlers as “shattron” and the pronunciation evolved into Chadron. The town’s roots began at a site northwest of the present location of the city. Homesteader Fannie O’Linn recognized the needs of rural folks who were establishing farms in the area during the 1870s.

She encouraged early businessmen to set up their shops on a portion of her claim near the confluence of the White River and Chadron Creek. And she made no secret of her quest to have the new town named after her O’Linn. Regardless of its new name, the town grew to 500 people by 1884. O’Linn also negotiated with officials of the Elkhorn, Fremont and Missouri Valley Railroads to set up a rail terminal and roundhouse in the new town. Finding O’Linn’s asking price for prime land a bit high, officials secretly established their own township about six miles to the southeast and named it Bordeaux, in honor Continued from Page 5 of an early fur trader. fillings, extractions, emergency treatment, limited root canal therThe railroad apy, prenatal and pediatric dental care; offers sliding payment reached Bordeaux in scale for individuals without insurance. O’Linn, realizing that the close proximity to the railroad was essential to their well being and prosperity, packed up their belongings and moved to Bordeaux. Over the objections of railroad officials, townspeople renamed the new area Chadron. The speed at which the people in O’Linn vanished and then reappeared in the new town prompted some people to refer to Chadron as The Magic City. O’Linn knew she had been licked. She also moved to Chadron and became its first appointed postmaster. She also opened her home for Sunday church services before the town’s first church could be constructed. She later became the first woman lawyer in Nebraska. Chadron State College was established in 1911 as Chadron Normal School. The railroad left the community in 1991 and the college, tourism and agriculture remain the area’s chief industries.

Set yourself up for success: smart habits for freshmen (ARA)—Got your extra-long sheets? Check. Flip-flops for the shower? Check. What about your school-branded hoodie, hat and Tshirt? You may think you’ve thought of everything for your first year of college, but without a plan to achieve success you are still unprepared. 1. Get involved Freshmen who feel connected to campus through student organizations and campus events tend to strive for success. Getting involved will not only enrich your college experience, but it will also pay dividends once you graduate. 2. Get out of your zone Don’t be afraid of new experiences. College is a time to test yourself—make mistakes, grow your strengths. Try something completely new, such as joining a

club dealing with a topic that is foreign to you. 3. Manage your time Make the most of every minute. Every hour of every day presents a choice—decide early on in your college experience that you will make the most of your time. Make a habit of prioritizing and planning ahead to balance your workload. 4. Manage your money College not only helps you prepare to pursue a successful career, but can also teach you the skills that are necessary for financial success in the future. Make meals instead of eating out, take advantage of free local events, and make sure what you want is really what you need. 5. Go to class Even on days when you feel like

sleeping in, make it a habit to go to class. Make the most out of your time and financial investments. 6. Overcome fear of seeking help Communicate with your professors. Get in the habit of letting your professors know when you will be late, absent or have questions about class material. Speak up and make yourself known. Building connections can lead to greater opportunities today, and in the years to come. 7. Personal organization Develop a system that works for you. Start a filing system that is simple and can be built upon. 8. Learn about resources Whether you need a tutor, help with a resume, or have questions about financial aid, campuses offer a variety of resources designed to help guide you through every

aspect of your college career. Attend campus events—especially orientation. Freshmen need to know who to go to when they need help, not only in academics but in financial aid and career counseling. Freshman orientation events are essential.

9. Remember your goals Stay focused. You are starting college for a reason—remember that reason. Let that reason motivate you when you are bogged down with homework or struggling with an assignment.

10. Be an active learner Active learning means concentrating on the current task, taking notes and asking questions. If freshmen practice active learning from the beginning, it will be natural for the remainder of their time in school.

CSC’s Week of Welcome - “Minion Madness” By KEVIN OLEKSY Record Staff Writer Chadron State College’s Office of Student Activities is planning a program entitled “Minion Madness” to encourage students to become familiar with businesses in Chadron and the surrounding area and many offices on campus. The chance to win prizes is encouragement too. Laure Sinn, coordinator for student activities, said that over 75 businesses and offices are participating. “I’m super excited for all the different ideas we’ve got for this year’s week of welcome. And it seems like people are

very receptive to the minions,” Sinn said. Students will visit the offices and businesses around town to find the lovable yellow minions from the hit “Despicable Me” movies. Once students locate the minion or minions in a location, they’ll take a selfie with the minions they find. According to Sinn, after competitors take their selfies, the can bring them to Campus Activity Board executives for verification and then they will be put into a drawing for various dorm room prizes items. The big prize will be a widescreen TV.

Minion decals like these will be displayed at participating “Minion Madness” locations on campus and around town.
