Rapid City is waiting for you

There’s almost no end to what you can do or buy in the heart of Rapid City, Downtown. You can sample wine, snag a pair of cowboy boots, buy the latest in organic facial products, browse for a new furniture set, discover upcycled home goods, find locally made jewlery, and enjoy decadent chocolate. And it’s all available in a thriving 52-block business district that makes up Downtown Rapid City. “You can spend an entire day down here,” said Suzette Cuny, membership coordinator for the Rapid City Downtown Association. The arrival of spring is always an exciting time Downtown, Cuny said, as businesses prepare for an influx of local residents looking for the latest in fashion, food, art and home décor, followed by a surge of tourists this summer. “It’s the most diverse shopping selection,” Cuny said. “Downtown is much bigger than the general consumer realizes. From East and West boulevards to North and South streets, people can spend some time venturing Downtown in a casual atmosphere and find the next hottest thing.” And there is no question that it is easily accessible all week long. Parking in public lots and the entire Downtown parking garage is free on Saturdays and Sundays, which means customers can enjoy an entire day of shopping, dining and entertainment without worrying about time limits. “Downtown patrons can also experience the great outdoors with the newly designed promenade in Memorial Park, it is just five minutes from the city center.” “You get to see the full landscape of our

community,” Cuny said, by simply walking a few blocks. “It’s spring; let’s get everybody outside and shopping Downtown.” Rapid City’s Downtown has always had quality businesses, Cuny said, but customers can now take advantage of the recent and ongoing transformation that has helped the district blossom into an attractive, full-service entertainment and shopping capital of the Black Hills region. Dozens of new businesses have made Downtown their home, offering customers a vibrant, diverse shopping district with a dose of fun thrown in. “There’s depth to what we have to offer,” Cuny said. “People should come down and discover the value of what is here.” Not only do the stores Downtown offer quality services and goods, they are run by owners and employees who have a vested interest in the area and care about the people who walk in the door. “When you venture into a Downtown shop, you get a lot of personal attention,” she said. “You’re talking to the person who owns the store and they are passionate about their business and its products.” Many of those business owners spent time this winter at national and international markets, finding the latest and greatest in fashion, jewelry, food, active wear, and home goods to stock their racks and shelves. repare pasta according to package directions, reserve 2 cups of the pasta water and then drain the pasta and leave in the colander. In the same pot, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté 1 minute. Add the mushrooms and sauté until they are tender. Add the sherry and deglaze the pot, scraping up any browned bits on

the bottom. Sprinkle the mixture with flour and cook 1 minute. Stir in the cream cheese until it melts. Slowly pour in the half-and-half or milk. Cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Season with salt, poultry seasoning and black pepper. Stir in the cubed turkey, cooked pasta and peas and heat through. If the mixture is too thick, add some of the reserved pasta water a little at a time to thin to desired consistency. Serve in bowl and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
