RING Re Form ::
A National Invitational Exhibition
A National & Invitational Exhibition at Circle Craft 2014 Curated by Barbara Cohen & Lawrence Woodford
RING Re::Form The ring has existed in various forms since time immemorial. Historically, it has been a symbol of either status, lineage, tribe, marriage, magic or love. However, during the latter half of the 20th century, with the birth of the new jewelry movement, the paradigm of the ring evolved to include the ring as art. It is this evolution that is being represented in Ring Re::Form. Emerging, mid-career and established jewelry artists from across Canada were invited and asked to create ‘portable sculptures’ of non-precious materials that would fit the hand but need not be wearable. Pushing the limits of wearability and moving jewelry towards the realm of art freed the artists to explore even greater creative avenues. Although diverse in thematic concepts and aesthetic sensibilities and varied in materials and technical process, the visual language applied to this body of work is brought together by the sculptural attributes that each ring possesses. In this exhibit, it is the rich imagination and creativity of the artists, rather than the cost of materials, which imbue the rings with their worth and thus challenge our preconceived notions of value. Jewelry, unlike any other art form, can be viewed in a unique way because of its direct contact with and relationship to the body. When worn, it is not only the artist but the wearer as well that make aesthetic judgements that can further inform the work. Whether on the finger or otherwise displayed, we hope the innovative rings in this collection invite the viewers to reassess what it is they know about jewelry and stimulate further dialogue about the future direction of this art form.
