PRESIDENT’S REPORT four being set certain tasks, Zsofi was in a team of 4 to a build a bridge, of which 3 were boys, so she elected to supervise!. Zsofi also attended the incoming Exchange Student Orientation Camp at Cap Getaway and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend meeting other inbound students in the district.

I advised the meeting that Bev had her back surgery on Friday and after 10 1/2 hours the surgeons were happy with what they achieved. Bev is now recuperating at Epworth Hospital in Richmond for another 3-4 weeks. Expect to see Bev 3-4 inches taller when you next see her - hopefully at the Xmas Show.

Bruce Reid earlier this month tendered his resignation to the club - many of you are aware that Jenny is facing some difficulties, and both will be spending a lot of time away from Bendigo with family - I am pleased to announce that the Board’s offer to Bruce of Honorary Membership was accepted with appreciation and humility. We hope to see Bruce from time to time.

2. Combined Night Meeting

Reminder re the Combined Night Meeting (with Bendigo Strathdale) - at All Seasons Tuesday 18 September 2012 a 6.15pm for 6.45pm start. “Villian or Hero” - a true story presentation by novelist Robin DeCrespiney who provides some background to her recently released book through Penguin “The People Smuggler”. A great opportunity to share Rotary with another Club and also bring along your partner. Cost is $25 pp for two course meal with tea/coffee.

I was honoured to attend our first induction for the year, Anthea Jones, joint proprietor of the Big 4 Bendigo Ascot Holiday Park. Anthea has initially been assigned to the Swap Meet Committee and Val Barker as her Rotary mentor, and we look forward to her involvement in the club.

Anthea was presented with her Rotary Folder, Members Badge, Lapel and a Rotary Polo/Cap and was very warmly welcomed by the members. Anthea, like myself hails from SA, but supports the other team - that is the Crows.

Andrew Hampton spoke of the 26th August 2012 (Sunday Afternoon) luncheon at Domaine Asmira Winery, Gibb Road, Toolleen for 12.15, followed by a visit to Jasper Hill Winery thereafter. a project of the Rotary Club of Eltham. More than 90 Aquaboxes capable of providing over 500,000 litres of clean water are being prepared to ship to Manila early next week. The shipment follows an urgent request from the Rotary Club of Loyola Heights, Manila for the Aquaboxes, after monsoon rains overflowed dams and rivers crisscrossing Manila and surrounding provinces killing at least 23 people and displacing some 1.2m people from their homes.

GUEST SPEAKER SUMMARY

Andrew Skewes - director of La Trobe University spoke after a thorough introduction from our Chair for the day, Daniela Ionescu. A brief snapshot of Andrew’s presentation follows:-

LaTrobe currently has 5007 students enrolled and have seen growth of 6% over past three years (that is 5% of Bendigo’s population!) drawing students from regional Vic, southern NSW and even north western metro. It is the biggest tertiary education facility outside Melbourne/ Geelong employing 400 full time staff and one of the biggest in Regional Australia

Attractions of La Trobe to students, was the scale (known by name not a number), range of offer and accessibility to all in the community - 22% from low social economic background (metro average is 9%) and supported student

accommodation being 600 beds in total following the recent completion of a further 200 beds. Some of these advantages are significant when comparing to metro based universities La Trobe also exports - it has 1200 external students studying in Vietnam, Malaysia and other South East Asian countries.

Andrew also covered the recent developments, comprising a $20.0m Health Building on Campus, and a $20.0m Training facility onsite at the Bendigo Hospital for Allied Health, Physio, Dentistry, Nursing etc.

Andrew portrayed his vision of La Trobe as contributing to Bendigo being known as the University City - this in part is already happening with very strong reciprocal community engagement and contribution. These thousands of students, the majority work in part time jobs, play sport, attend church and community groups.

Liam’s Summer Report Dear Rotary, This is my northern summer report so it is going to be quite a long one, but I trust one of the most interesting. I have had probably the busiest and action packed summer of my life!!

It all started with Swedish midsummer with my host family and another Rotary Exchange student from Australia, Caitlin.

The Swedish midsummer tradition was something that was a great privilege to be a part of. You get up in the morning and build a maypole, which is a big structure covered in all sorts of different wildflowers, leaves and branches from bushes.

You then hang two massive flower rings/wreathes off the arms of the maypole before erecting it! We then went back to the house and made flower crowns, something which normally only the girls do but I also made one. The weather was pretty average as it was raining most of the day, however just after lunch we went to dance around the maypole and by this time all the adults had consumed a fair few schnapps and most were a little drunk.

We danced around the maypole and it was very funny; there was a song about small frogs where you had to dance in a circle hopping like a frog! The drinking continued late into the night for all the adults and they had many different drinking songs which got worse and worse as the night went on! It was a great day and a very Swedish experience which was great!!

After midsummer there was little over a week till the Rotary Exchange student Euro tour departed. I was very excited and couldn’t wait to see everyone again and meet those exchange students I hadn’t yet met.

The week before the tour went

very quickly and I was soon on my way to the southern Swedish city of Malmö with my host family, it was sad to say goodbye to them as this would be the longest time spent away from them all year, but as it turned out the 17 days of Euro tour appeared to go by in the blink of an eye!!

We started early in the morning on the first day in Malmö all 65 exchange students and the 4 chaperones piled onto the bus and away we went. It was a few hours drive to the ferry which would take us from Denmark to Germany and on the way to Berlin! It was a long and boring/exciting bus trip and we arrived in the early evening.

We stayed in the east of Berlin and you could really see the Soviet influence with big ugly grey buildings, (quite a few had been abandoned) it seemed to be quite run down and wasn’t the most beautiful area. We were assigned rooms and sent to get dressed and ready for a traditional German meal of schnitzel!

Dinner was very nice and we were permitted to go out afterwards. The Germany vs Italy European soccer semi final was on, so we found the nearest sports bar and sat down to watch the game. Unfortunately Germany lost, so the Germans weren’t very happy which was a bit of a downer, but we had a great night anyway!

It still blew my mind that in just one day I had been in three different countries and didn’t even have to fly anywhere! The second day in Berlin was very nice as we did a city tour by bus and went and looked at the Berlin wall, it was quite incredible and still a strong reminder of how the country and city and been divided up until a little more than two decades ago.

There was some amazing artwork on the wall! Most of it very

symbolic and pushing strong political issues. We then went to checkpoint Charlie which is the most famous border station between the former East and West Germany! We spent the rest of the day allowed to explore the city on our own, before returning for the evening meal. It was another fun evening we spent out and about in Berlin!
