President Brian Figg, Dr Rosey Panelli and Chairman for the day Kurt Walkder at Tuesday’s meeting. An enjoyable meeting to warm us all up during the depths of winter!, a high quality speaker, the now usual very clever session from Sergeant Tom Seddon, and of course some Rotary Business to discuss. Thanks also to Frank Lean and Alida Robinson for filling in as cashiers at short notice, and Ken Richmond for standing in as Treasurer for the day. Great to see Jack Svanosio enjoying his birthday with his Rotary friends,

Welcome and intro of our guests Guest Speaker for the day, Dr Rosey Panelli, Epilepsy Australia recipient of this year’s Australian Fleece Competition donation. Zsofia (Zsofi) Szabo, our Youth Exchange Student from Hungary Zsofi – gave an update to the meeting on her last week, she has started to settle at school and also had a social outing on the weekend with one of her new friends in Bendigo. Great to see a smile on Zsofi’s face and we look forward to her weekly updates. Remember members can also help out the host families of exchange students by including Zsofi on any outgoings/trips. Epilepsy is an important but neglected area of health. The time has come to bring it out of the shadows. Our understanding of the brain is slowly developing with the help of modern technology; however the ignorance and stigma associated with epilepsy often still remain. Epilepsy can begin at any age, although it is most common in children and the elderly. About 1 per hundred people has epilepsy at any one time, but the risk of having epilepsy in your lifetime is between 3% and 5%. Kurt introduced Dr Rosey Panelli who is the research officer for Epilepsy Australia, Australia’s leading consumer-led epilepsy agency. Epilepsy Australia provides education, information and assistance to Australians living with epilepsy. Rosey presented Appreciation Certificates to four of our members whom help out during the Australian Anniversaries BIRTHDAYS:

Epilepsy means – a tendency to have recurring seizures and the condition varies enormously between individuals. Some people experience frequent seizures whilst others may only have several in their life. Also, there are many different types of seizures, with some causing loss of consciousness, whilst others may be mistaken for strange behavior or the effects of drugs and alcohol.

The diagnosis of epilepsy is best made by an epilepsy specialist who is trained to assess the history and results of any tests. It can be a difficult diagnosis because of the tests will be inconclusive. After one seizure a diagnosis may not be possible, but a second seizure may bring confirmation. When providing first aid to someone having a convulsive seizure, do NOT try to put anything in the

A Notice for Chairman - To assist the President and as a courtesy to guest speakers, when the president calls for visiting Rotarians and guests to be introduced, the Chairman for the day is asked, please, to stand and introduce the guest speaker by name with the comment that he/she will be more formally introduced later in the meeting. Members are reminded that if for any reason you are unable to fulfil the duty for which you are rostered it is your responsibility to arrange a replacement

mouth. Instead stay calm, time the seizure, and protect the person from injury. Roll the person onto one side when it is practical to do so and keep the airway clear. Stay with the person until the seizure ends. Reassure the person as they recover and check them if they sleep afterwards. You can read more about epilepsy first aid on the Epilepsy Australia website. The address is below. Approximately 70 % of people will control their seizures with medication, but having a diagnosis of epilepsy can still lead to many challenges. There can be impacts on self-esteem, driving, employment, insurance and relationships. For those unable to control their seizures there can be fear of seizures and the risks of injury, or even death. Striving for the best possible seizure control is of the utmost importance. Surgery can be an option for some patients, if the focus of the epilepsy is confined to a particular spot or scar on the brain. With very detailed pre- surgical testing it is sometimes possible to remove the irritable focus without causing permanent harm to the patient.

Victoria offers world class epilepsy care and research for epilepsy. Nevertheless attracting funding to this condition is difficult. It is important to emphasize that whilst epilepsy is not as common as many chronic illnesses, the impact can be enormous. People with epilepsy deserve a fair go. Thank you so much for your support of the fleece competition and the funds that you have helped to raise for epilepsy this year. Mens Health Week Barbecue Thursday September 6th In September The Rotary Club of Bendigo will again be providing a Barbecue for the Mens Health Week function at the Capital theatre.

The format will be similar to previous years however we will be providing a healthier service. Rather than the usual culinary delights of a “fry up” we plan to serve up a healthier option of Chicken and Vegetable wraps. To this end I’d like to pull together a list of volunteers that can assist in providing this important service.

We’ll need people to help with the setting up of the barbecue facility during the day together with the preparation of the food etc. We’ll also need as many budding Masterchefs as possible for the evening to do the actual cooking and serving.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Could you please let me know if you can help out and if so what times you will be available on the day.

I’ll obviously provide more detail once I’ve got an idea of who can make themselves available. Thanks in advance. Regards, Mike Hughes
