As a largely selffunding, not-for-profit organisation, we chart our own course in our quest to improve healthcare training, and to yield improvements in patient outcomes. We began as the home of surgical training in Ireland and now our College reflects the diversity of healthcare professions worldwide.
RCSI continues to be home to the National Surgical Training Centre and is responsible for delivering excellence in surgical education and training, setting and supporting the highest possible standards in surgical practice. At all times we act in the interest of patients and the quality of their care.

The educational ethos at RCSI is based on a strong emphasis on the interaction between the healthcare student and the patient, under the supervision and guidance of our teachers.

Our researchers explore the frontiers of medical science and map new discoveries in clinical and applied research NEW DIRECTIONS, NEW SOLUTIONS RCSI has always embraced our responsibility to find new pathways in healthcare education, training, development and provision. Our educators develop and define education programmes and courses to better address the evolving challenges of healthcare practice and provision. Our researchers explore the frontiers of medical science and map new discoveries in clinical and applied research. Our surgeons are sought after globally for their scientific knowledge, patient care and work ethic, as well as their technical expertise and innovation.
Our graduates deliver considered solutions based on a holistic vision of medicine and healthcare that integrates the rigour of the academic trainer, the experience of the practitioner and the ingenuity of the researcher. Educating influential leaders is at the forefront of the College’s ethos. In our Institute of Leadership, experienced health professionals have the opportunity to explore the essential nature of healthcare leadership, while enhancing skills and aptitude in its practical application. An RCSI campus is not just a focal point of educational excellence and intensive research activity, it’s also a social hub for students from over 50 countries In the developing world, RCSI works to advance the health and wellbeing of communities by sharing knowledge and providing training and expertise NURTURING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES WORLDWIDE Programmes to promote interest in research, medicine and science among people of all ages, are run by RCSI throughout the year in Ireland. Close links have been established with local schools, as well as youth, community and sports groups to encourage and facilitate third level participation and enhance life chances for those traditionally underrepresented at third level. Through its Recreation Education And Community Health (REACH) Programme, RCSI promotes and supports lifelong health and education in the local communities of southeast inner-city Dublin. Activities range from free public lectures to events that are specifically targeted at creating health awareness.
In the developing world, RCSI works to advance the health and wellbeing of communities by sharing knowledge and providing training and expertise in medicine, research, healthcare and surgery. Diverse initiatives are in place to tackle a range of worldwide challenges, particularly in Africa. RCSI partners with organisations such as COSECSA (The College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa), the World Health Organization, Irish Aid, the European Vaccine Initiative and local schools, in developing solutions to healthcare challenges, resource and surgical manpower shortages, vaccine development and improving water quality.
