Stupid Cupid!

S

o it’s that time of the year when couples put themselves up on a pedestal to be admired, ie. Instagram. We shall now pay homage to them with this countdown.

of first year/foundation year students, who then spend the rest of the 4/5 years regretting that mistake.

1.

THE TRIPLETS.There goes that happy in love couple smiling and laughing…….. With their permanent third wheel following right behind them. Never fazed by the awkward, this triplet can be found sitting with their couple in lectures, at the library and even romantically skating away at Dundrum Ice skating rink. Usually a role played by the single best friend. They’re pretty much a part of the relationship and deserves credit for not throwing up – For them, 3 is never a crowd.

4.

THE SEMESTER LOVE The love is inversely proportional to workload. One semester they’re a thing, and the next semester it seems as if they’ve both fallen off the face of the earth, because they both have a lot of studying to do. But rest assured that they’ll be back next semester, when the modules are easier.

#FEATURES together…. They are not a couple! Except for that night out in the club, you see them getting ‘real close’ and realise that, yes, they are definitely a couple!

6.

RAHUL AND ANJALI (Ask your brown friend…)That best friend duo that is pretty much in a perfect relationship…. Except for the fact neither of them knows. They complement each other so well that some people think they’re already married!

7.

THE SITUATIONSHIP Shout out to all those dedicated enough to battle time zones for their hometown sweetheart… and yet still have time for a little RCSI romance on the side. Everyone knows that they have a hometown sweetheart, except hot RCSI lover but even if RCSI lover knew… he/she wouldn’t care and would still want them. Time to change Facebook status to: it’s complicated.

2.

THE SUGAR DOCTOR They’ve already exhausted all their romance options within Senior Cycle. Oh! How they rejoice at the scent of fresh young blood! And props to those miracle workers who manage to snag themselves an almost-Doctor-lover from a higher year. Then there’s that huge year gap/time gap/ location gap that they seem to work through flawlessly and admirably. Getting study tips and lecture notes are a definite pro for these sugar babies.

3.

THE EXES That once happy couple that would be together every second of everyday…. But not anymore. These people tend to hate each other now and avoid each other at every cost; sitting on a different library floor, sitting at opposite sides of the lecture theatre, praying so reverently that God doesn’t let them be in the same anatomy group and hoping that the other does a semester in Bahrain. This is usually typical

FEBRUARY 2015

8. 5.

THE UNDERCOVER COUPLE “They’re definitely a couple! They’re each other’s top friends on Snapchat”, says your suspicious friend. You disagree strongly! They never sit beside each other in class, they haven’t been spotted drinking coffee together, and they don’t study in the library

BIBLIOPHILE And lastly, we must acknowledge the greatest love of them all, that between a med student and their books. No time for parties, no time for wasting, maybe a little time for ice cream, but there will NEVER be enough study time. This romance can be hidden away from all or seen on the library third floor - get a study room guys!

“Is it easier to love or to be loved?”

“I

think it’s easier to be loved rather than to love! When being loved you are just yourself and those around you must decide whether or not they love you. When loving, you question many things about yourself and must make the decision of loving another person, or simply people in general.

“What would you say is True Love ?”

“T

rue love? I couldn’t have gotten asked about the top 10 crossovers of the 2013-2014 NBA season?

So what is true love? It’s not about writing sonnets or holding hands. It’s not about boxes of chocolate, nor is it about stealing a lock of hair and adding it to the nail clippings and the dandruff flakes in the shrine that your significant other doesn’t know about yet, and that you’re afraid to tell them about. True love is about being comfortable with intimacy and not being afraid to be yourself around someone else. True love is waiting three days to watch the new episode of Game of Thrones with someone else, even though they said you could go right ahead and watch it without them. True love is about not being afraid to be the little spoon. True love is knowing that if you accidentally let a fart slip out when you’re together, it’s going to be okay. It’s about shared moments, be it happy ones or sad ones. Ultimately, it’s about accepting that despite the highs and lows, there will inevitably be a peak for every valley, but only as long as the two of you weather the bullshit together.

“What is your favourite thing about each other?”

“T

his is a tough question because I find it a bit icky to only choose a single trait. But, I honestly think that her ability to just be supportive, in bad and good times, is what makes me stay in love with her. If I am feeling down she always knows what to say and do, and if I am happy, she willingly celebrates with me; both of which makes me feel better in the end. So add this to the fact that she’s incredibly intelligent and extremely beautiful, and I couldn’t help but feel like the happiest man at RCSI.

I

absolutely love Randy’s quirky sense of humour and ability to always make me laugh. It has been two and a half years and that feeling of light-heartedness, exuberance and joy by being around him, still resonates within me. There is never a dull moment! I feel as if I’m always laughing around Randy, sometimes with him or at him! From trying to dance to Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, to all my food mysteriously vanishing. I also finally found someone who will put up with my scandalous laughing and snorting without judgment! Also, it’s definitely a wonderful feeling to have someone whom I know, can always make light of those times of despair or sadness that one may sometimes go through in life.

“Do you believe in love at first sight?”

“B

ecause Hollywood infected my brain I’d have to say yes, I do.

My aunt once told me a story about her friend, a past RCSI student, who fell in love with his wife at first sight. She was a beauty queen/doctor and she had been invited to the college to talk to the students. He said he remembered whispering to his friend that he’d marry her someday… They’ve been married for almost 20 years now I think.

Harold J. Browne

A

IARLA O’DOMHNAILL

t the beginning of 2015, RCSI lost one of it’s most distinguished, respected, and trusted members of staff, Mr. Harold J. Browne. A colleague to some, an educator to many, and a devoted husband to Aileen MacClancy, who passed away in 1982, and Vivienne Nash whom he married in 1999, Mr. Browne’s impact throughout his life was great and immeasurable. Born in 1922 in Longford, educated in the local St. Mel’s College, and obtaining his medical degree from UCD in 1946, Harold’s journey that ultimately led him to working in RCSI was not as straight forward as one might think. Beginning his career as a house surgeon in the Richmond Hospital, Mr. Browne was able to observe surgeries working as an anaesthetist. From there, Mr. Browne’s career leapt forward when he was awarded a fellowship by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to train in 1950, and subsequently a scholarship to obtain his Masters degree in surgery from the University of Minnesota. After returning to Ireland in 1953, Mr. Browne was appointed surgical registrar in the Richmond Hospital. He received his MCh from UCD in 1954, and in 1955 he was appointed consultant general surgeon in the Richmond Hospital where he worked for 32 years up until his retirement from surgical practice, and the beginning of his full-time career in RCSI, in 1987. I was joined by Professor Clive Lee on Tuesday 27th January to discuss Mr. Browne, and the possibly understated yet profound effect that he had had on the college throughout his time here.

HAROLD J. BROWNE (1922 – 2015) MSc, MCh, DA, FACS, Hon FRCSI, Hon FAS

Professor Lee met Mr. Browne not as a student or employee, but as “Harold” the surgeon prosector and lecturer, although his junior, standing on equal ground in RCSI. When Harold started in RCSI in 1987, he was one of only two surgeon prosectors in the college, and worked alongside the then Professor of Anatomy, Stanley Monkhouse, between them changing the teaching of anatomy in the department, to its benefit. “Harold really set the tone for the surgeon prosectors” in RCSI, noted Professor Lee, a tone that has remained ever since. Leading by example in his roles as professor and surgeon, Mr. Browne was continuously innovating and raising the bar, improving his own personal standards and the standards of medicine in the country. Harold was and is the yardstick against which new members of staff are measured in RCSI, and surgeons measure themselves.

#FEATURES

Harold always encouraged the growth of the colleges now esteemed research division under Professor Lee, in tandem with the growth of the Department of Anatomy. When Harold joined the college in 1987, upon retiring from surgical practice, he was only the second surgeon prosector in the department, the college at the time relying on younger demonstrators to lead the students through their anatomy courses. This number has today risen to twelve surgeon prosectors. Harold was also here when the undergraduate classes grew so large that the college needed to split the classes into two separate anatomy groups, the format that we are all familiar with today. Indeed Mr. Browne witnessed and helped foster the growth of RCSI.

Having taught in RCSI for over 60 years as Mr. Browne did, some lecturers could understandably become tired and uninterested, but Professor Lee remembers Harold’s last lecture he gave at 90 years of age in November 2012, on the subject of “Superior Mesenteric Vessels” as being “excellent as usual”. Throughout his career in RCSI Harold always acted for the betterment of the college, his colleagues, and his students. His criticisms were always constructive and his examinations always irrefutably fair.

“Harold really set the tone for the surgeon prosectors” - CLIVE LEE

HAROLD BROWNE , former President of the Biological Society at a 2014 RCSI Biological Society Event.

Mr. Browne has been honoured many times over the years by the college; receiving an Honorary Fellowship from RCSI in 1976, having the lecture theatre beside the anatomy room named in his honour, and also being elected president of the Biological Society in 2012 marking 60 years of his teaching in RCSI, are a few of his prestigious accolades.

Speaking on the surgeon’s half-time coffee break, Professor Lee explained, “Harold would always be central to the conversation and telling you stories. They were very entertaining, and some of the surgeons would chime in. Harold would usually be the first to see the clock, that it was time to go back in and teach the second shift, so he’d stand up and everyone else would stand up.” And this still lives on in tradition amongst the surgeons, whomever notices that it’s time to begin teaching will announce “Harold Browne”, and they will all get back to work.

To quote one of Professor Lee’s articles on Mr.Browne, “His surgical expertise made him the choice of his colleagues when they went under the knife and his wisdom led them to elect him President of the Irish Medical Council.” Making substantial contributions to both medicine and teaching during his life, Professor Lee remarked that it is undoubtedly the end of an era. “But instead of one or two surgeon prosectors, we now have a club, so that’s success. In other words the idea continues, and the way of teaching continues, and that is a very good thing.”

Harold was known to find the teaching of anatomy boring, and would regularly make it more interesting through stories and jokes, remarking that “the gubernaculum leads the testis into the scrotum, as Moses led the Israelites into the Promised Land”. It was his sense of humour, fairness, and unquestionable expertise that made RCSI students both fear and revere Mr. Browne in tough situations like card signings. One of the great things about being a surgeon prosector, explained Prof. Lee, is that the students you teach stay the same age as time goes on. This helped to keep Harold young at heart and in mind throughout his years teaching at RCSI, although he had no shortage of experience educating young adults, having raised five children; Michael, Philip, Richard, Elizabeth, and Ingrid.

If Harold’s legacy wasn’t clear enough after spending time in RCSI, one needn’t look further back than his funeral to see the lasting impact that he has had on innumerable people. To have such a large crowd at your funeral, at such a grand age as 92, is a testament to Harold, and the guard of honour he received from current students here in RCSI only compounded this fact.

FEBRUARY 2015

A constant in RCSI for so long, his absence will be felt for the longest time. However instead of mourning his death, we have the opportunity to celebrate his achievements, his contributions, and his life.

#HAPPENINGS TAG ALONG FOR RAG WEEK

xhausted from my labour week in Obstetrics I log onto my Facebook to find that three very important things have happened. Firstly one of my friends is getting married, secondly an airline is offering virtual reality content and most importantly starting February the 13th, RCSI is having its annual RAG week.

For those of you that don’t know R-A-G stands for raising and giving. This year the charity of choice is MSF. If you feel like you have a burning desire to help people in need, as all those in the health field do, then by all means go to every single event! If you just want to have the craic, attend just the events that occur between Feb12th and 21st. If you are not convinced let me tell you a little more about each one to sway your mind.

TURN THE MUSIC UP!

O

MUSIC SOCIETY’S BALLAD SESSION FRIDAY 13TH Friday the 13th is a day associated with bad luck for some but for the brilliant students of RCSI it is quite the opposite. It is a day of great fortune as there will be a Ballad session on said day. Your classmates will be in good form as they caress the strings, tickle the ivories and stretch their vocal cords in an attempt to lull you into a false sense of happiness before the workload of the week comes crashing down on you once again. I can honestly say I have never been to a ballad session where I did not have fun. DUBLIN’S VALENTINE RUN SATURDAY 14TH If you are a sportier sort and you rather stretching muscles that are a little more powerful, then the Dublin Valentine’s day run is for you. Give your heart a warm up for the long day that lies ahead. According the SU’s Daniel Creegan it’s a “fun run with a Valentine’s Day twist”. If your heart is still intact by Valentine’s night or even if its crushed and you fancy a fun night out to recover then end the day with “Valentine’s with the French”. Vivre la vie with the French college rugby team as they come in good form to have some craic. The locations of said liaison is yet to be announced so keep an eye out for that.

SEPTEMBER 2014

ne of my favourite things about RCSI is the sheer musical genius we’re surrounded by. Since joining Music Soc, I’ve been able to see how all that talent gets put to good use! Of course we have our biannual Ballad Sessions. This is where our committee comes together to find a venue, recruit performers, and essentially plan an awesome party for the school. From creating sign up sheets, repairing equipment, finding DJs, booking vans, designing posters, running the show and more - planning Ballad Session calls for a variety of skills! Luckily, we’ve got a diverse and hard working committee to get it all done. But we’re not only about partying here at MusicSoc. We know how to take it down a notch and wind back with our Acoustic Nights, held twice a year at the couches. If you’re a budding musician, looking for a supportive audience - this is your night to shine! No matter what genre you’re into, what year you’re in, or where you’re from - we love for anyone and everyone to perform. But wait, there’s more! MusicSoc doesn’t stop there. In the past, we’ve had ukulele jam sessions, world music days, and more. We also manage the music room which is past the doors near the vending machines in the coffee doc. This involves taking amps and instruments for repairs, investing in new instruments and getting the room ready for you guys to use. We also supply the music and mics for the 15 or so events that take place in the college every year. Yes - it sounds like a full time job here at the Soc - but we sure do have a blast getting it done! We’re also easy to contact if you have any questions. Our email is musicsoc@rcsi.is, join our Facebook group, plus hit up any of the committee members! And if you’re interested in joining the Soc, we’ll have an AGM near the end of the year, so keep your eyes peeled. For now, we’ll see all of you next Friday Feb 13th as we kick of RAG week at Opium Rooms! Tickets €7 euro at the SU and €5 at the door. Peace n Love

#HAPPENINGS TRAFFIC LIGHT BALL MONDAY 16TH Are you looking for that special someone? Has Valentine’s Day led to you thinking your special someone is not really that special? Do you like a good night out? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this ball is just what you have been waiting for. The rules are simple if you are single show your readiness to mingle by wearing green. If you have someone not too special or are sporting that fun Facebook status “it’s complicated” then wear amber. If you are absolutely certain that you have found that special someone then wear Red. Anyone wearing red is therefore off the market. Anyone wearing amber you can approach at your own risk. In case you haven’t caught on by now anyone wearing green is good for a go. The ball will be held at Diceys and is sure to be filled with libation and liberation. I advise you all to dress responsibly. PHARM SOC NIGHT OUT TUESDAY 17TH Three words: Survival kit mandatory. Pharmcay soiety knows how to have a good time so if you guys think you are up for a nightout with with these masters of potion make sure you have some sort of Plan B for the morning after. For me this would include some lucozade, dark sunglasses and paracetamol. Just make sure you are prepared. CARNIVAL NIGHT WEDNESDAY 18TH In RCSI on this fated night, the Drama Society will regail you with live entertainment as you dine on pizza and spiritedly converse with friends. These RCSI Thespians have chosen to bring to you the Fawlty Towers for your viewing pleasure. CRAZY HAIR PUB CRAWL THURSDAY 19TH Friends. Check. Alcohol. Check. Walk-up-in-this-place-like-I-own-achick-Beyonce-wig. Double check. I don’t think I even have to tell you guys how this night is going to go down. If you are planning to do the most and attend all the RAG weekevents I just have to warn you in advance that this will be the biggest challenge of all the events. More physically tiring than the Valentine’s day run and more intaxicating than the pharmacy night out. There will be a number of pub stops along the way with challenges at each. People will struggle to remember the names of their friends, their addresses and a small few will even forget there own names. I fear that the combined effort of having to balance a wig and drinks will be too much for some and many will fall to the wayside before reaching the last pub. All is not for naught as the person with the craziest hair will receive a ticket for the finale event of RAG week “Strictly come dancing”. I fear that many of you will succumb to the weight of the headdresses and will be left in the gutters and alley ways coughing up hairballs. Alas a few brave souls will finish the entire journey. Those few who make it to the end in the wake of their fallen comrades can say I came I drank and I hope I can make it home. STRICTLY COME DANCING (WITH DANCE SOC) FRI FEB 20TH This grand finale of RAG week is sure to be quite the spectacle. The RCSI’s exam hall will be transformed into a rambunxious stage of frivolity and eloquence, where staff and student alike will vie for the favour of the audience. That’s right! The winner of this dance extravaganza will be determined by YOU! Students will be partnered with students, staff partnered with staff and student partnered with staff. Don’t miss your chance to weigh in on the finese of these brave souls. Now if you still doubt my advise on attending the entire week of festivities, I have one more incentive for you. I have it on good authority that purchase of week long tickets will result in your name being added to a raffle for a free College Ball ticket. Additionally if you give your signature at each event attended for the week you will be entered into the draw again, which means more chances for you to win that fated ticket. So don’t let this opportunity slip you by.

The World this Month

#HAPPENINGS AISLINN KILLIAN

January

It’s time for a fresh start, time to join the gym a lose about 10stone, time to start studying from day one in the semester instead of the week before exams, and time to just generally pull your life together… Well at least that is what it says on your new years resolutions list. The only thing about all this self improvement is that it takes time and you may not have had a chance to turn on Sky News, so here is a quick round up of the main events to save you trolling through a months worth of happenings.

The Headlines:

France

Gunmen killed 12 people in the offices of the satirical maga zine Charlie Hebdo in Paris earlier this month. The gunmen were heard yelling that they had “avenged the Prophet Mohammed”. Charlie Hebdo has long faced controversy for printing cartoons mocking politicians and religions alike. In 2006 it reprinted contentious cartoons from a Danish magazine that depicted the Prophet Mohammed. Five years later it published an edition called “Charia Hebdo” which they advertised as being edited by the Prophet, the night before publication their offices in Paris were fire bombed. The terror attack has caused outrage in Paris and the rest of the world as it is seen as an attack on free speech and democracy. On the Sunday following the attack at Charlie Hebdo and the killing of 4 people at a Kosher supermarket, 4 million people took to the streets across France to march in a display of defiance against terrorism under the slogan “Je Suis Charlie”. In Paris the marchers were joined by dozens of world leaders who walked arm in arm at the front of the march.

Yemen

There is now a power vacuum in Yemen after Houthi rebels kidnapped the country’s chief of staff and took over President Hadi’s residence forcing him and the rest of the cabinet to stand down. The Houthi’s are Shiite Muslims and have long felt marginalized in Yemen, they also oppose US drones and US presence in Yemen which was allowed under Hadi’s reign. The U.S. have continued with drone strikes despite his resignation.

Greece

Alex Tsipras was sworn in as Greece’s new Prime Minister on the 26th of January. He comes from the left wing Syriza party and has vowed to end austerity in Greece and to renegotiate the terms of the Greek bailout. The EU has other ideas with the EU Central Bank Exec reassuring the rest of the union that Greece will still have to pay its debt.

MONEY TALKS

Just got back and already need another holiday? Why not go to Russia? The Russian Ruble has taken a hammering in the last couple months driven by the crashing oil prices. On the bright side it has never been cheaper to visit Mother Russia. January was a busy month for billionaires. Right after the Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz, is the World Economic Forum at Davos, though conveniently for them the two locations are only a short helicopter ride apart. News out of Davos reflects an antithesis of moods between the ever optimistic tech industry nerds suggesting the world is on the brink of something wonderful, and the persistently gloomy real world economists suggesting the end of democracy is nigh. International Airlines Group (IAG), the owner of British Airways, has made third offer to buy Aer Lingus. The current offer is for €2.55 a share which values Aer Lingus at €1.36 billion… I knew this is meant to be unbiased news but my in my “expert” opinion this would be a disaster if this goes ahead, BA is known to promptly cancel all flights if there is even a mere hint of snow forecasted in the next month… DON’T DO IT AER LINGUS!

USA

Gay marriage is back on the Untied States Supreme Court’s agenda with cases being accepted for hearings in April. The ruling, which is expected in June, will determine if gay couples have a constitutional right to marry.

HERE’S THE DEAL: Too much effort to read all of the headlines? Well here is the quick fire summary of the news this month.

- Extremists killed 16 people in Paris - 4 million marched in defiance - Yemen has no government - Greece has new one - The US and Gay Marriage = match made in heaven - Have no money? Go to Russia - Have lots? Go to Switzerland - Or buy Aer Lingus

IC1 can be a difficult period because it’s an abrupt adjustment from the lackadaisical, carefree JC3 days. But in the words of the great, famed philosopher-poet Eminemates, it’s time to “Snap Back To Reality”...then there’s something about gravity that goes over my head.

In any case, here are a few tips from a wizened, old IC survivor. I hope they help, or, at the very least serve to being a knowing smile to some of your faces.

1

So, you’ve dipped your wee little toes into the massive lake that is Intermediate Cycle. Welcome. The water’s warm and the fish are biting! Errr the fish being the knowledge that you are trying to catch...(oh god, this is what I get for trying to extend a metaphor).

The Robert Adams Lecture Theatre has it’s own micro-climate that is as unpredictable as the weather outside. One day you’ll be shedding all your clothes like a menopausal woman with hot flashes. The next you’ll be considering initiating an allclass huddle. When in doubt...layers are your friend.

2

Speaking of fashion, my oh my don’t you all look so office ready and put together on your first day! Slowly but surely, however, business casual evolves into artfully disheveled, and finally into can I really get away with these UGGs? Will they actually notice a really really dark wash pair of jeans? (The answer is no they won’t...)

3 4

You’ve all probably experienced homesickness by now...but this is the first time you’ll be hit with school-sickness. RCSI will never have looked so darn good before. You will develop a love-hate relationship with the Beaumont Cafeteria. On one hand, your wallet appreciates the low prices and large portions...on the other... well, you won’t ever know what you’re truly eating...also they can make a pie out of anything. ANYTHING.

5

You will have hours and hours of breaks that loom before you like an eternity. The question is what to do?! Should you study diligently and make Ms. Stanton proud? ...or take up knitting and become one of those elusive well-rounded medical students? Or you know chit-chat is always fun...

6

Yes, those bus rides take forever. But, there are upsides! It means the possibility of a morning nap! And being able to sit with your class and enjoy the camarderie.

FEBRUARY 2015

CPCs: go to them! There is one on almost every exam you’ll have at the end so become familiar with how they structure them. Oh and if Mary Leader asks you a question...she will expect an answer. So umm a refresher in making up smart sounding things on the spot is in order...or, ya know, studying is good too...

12

You’ve got your rickety chairs, your squeaky chairs, your bent chairs, and the ones that fall apart when you sit on ‘em. And I think somewhere in between are the actual functioning ones. Identify them early and then never let them go. By all means, mark your territory! (No, not like that!)

13 Then of course there are the days you miss your bus because the driver just couldn’t bother to wait. No hard feelings though. Well except for when the door slams you in the face. That might be hard.

Speaking of chairs, here’s a game I like to call Therapeutical Chairs. Find the seats closest to the front (ahem, not the tilt-a-whirls) and avoid getting called on by Prof. Stanton. Those of you in the back, I’m sorry, you lose. Better luck next time! Also...you may find it helpful to avoid bright scarves...when the time comes, you’ll know what I mean...

On attendance. Yes, it’s important. Yes, it really does count. (This message is approved by the IC administration).

Invest/Use/Beg for/Borrow/Steal? (Ok, not the last one) a pathology textbook. I can’t stress that one enough. Lectures are handy for summarizing, but you really need a book for depth. Do it. You’ll thank me. Might I suggest: Robbins or Kumar&Clark for Clinical Medicine? You might by now have realized that although you study in the hospital, you don’t really venture too far past, well, the entrance. There’s a world beyond that’s just waiting for you...in IC3. But don’t worry, soak up all that knowledge and you’ll be ready for it.

10

Microbiology. Some people love it. A lot of people hate it. Make your peace with the buggies early, because they are here to stay. Learn your main symptoms. Know the key antibiotics and culture media. And then you’ll be golden.

The SARA office will postpone lectures on you. You will have lecturers not turn up. Someday it’ll feel like the world has turned it’s back on you. That’s because it’s true. I’m just kidding! Of course that’s not true! But you’re in a busy environment and doctors are busy and administers are busy and you’re busy and ... Do you see a pattern? Don’t worry! This is med school. You will definitely get more than your fill of lectures. IC is all about learning what can go wrong with the body. Guys. That’s what doctors do. YOU’RE FINALLY GETTING TO SEE WHAT THE BIG BOYS REALLY DO! Never lose that perspective! It’s what makes pathology so much more fulfilling. And there we have it! You all are going to be brilliant! Just remember to study hard, don’t stress the little stuff, and well, stay in school! ...I suppose the last one’s obvious, but hey, seemed like some fitting last words. Good luck y’all! See you in Beaumont!

It’s all about Gratitude!

MOYOWA BOYO

O

ne word has been taking the wellness world by storm, and contrary to popular belief it’s not yoga or kale. Nope, this word can’t be made into a super food salad nor can it twisted into a myriad of different positions. It’s the new kid on the block that’s really not so new because you’ve probably heard it before. The new buzz word is gratitude. Gratitude is simply an emotion for appreciating what you have. The concept behind gratitude is that being grateful for what you have increases your overall happiness and well-being. In a culture that places a large emphasis on what you want or need, gratitude is incredibly important. It’s not exactly new information, but every once in a while we need to be reminded about something as obvious as gratitude.

Research has shown that gratitude: • • • •

increases happiness and optimism decreases anxiety and depression, builds stronger relationships plays an important role in helping people recover from traumatic events

Regularly expressing and feeling gratitude forces you not to take things for granted while allowing you to fully appreciate your life and all that’s in it. It shifts your focus and perspective in a more positive direction. It even empowers you to take better care of yourself. One study showed that compared with a control group, people who maintained a gratitude practice reported fewer physical problems such as headaches and spent more time exercising. Gratitude also strengthens relationships because when people express gratitude to each other, they report feeling more satisfied with the relationship. Fortunately, studies show that gratitude is something that can be cultivated deliberately. This explains the large number of gratitude apps and journals all aimed at people looking to cultivate a gratitude mindset. Creating a gratitude mindset is simple, and it can be done in three easy steps.

HOW TO START CREATING A HABIT OF GRATITUDE: 1. Get a notebook or a piece of paper. 2. Write the date and the following heading “5 things I’m grateful for today”. 3. Write down your list of things you are grateful for. It doesn’t matter how big or small the things you write down are. What matters is that you acknowledge and appreciate them. To get the full benefits of your practice, you should aim to do this once every day for at least a month.

HELPFUL TIP: On a particularly bad day, grab a piece of paper wherever you are and head the paper “ 10 things I’m grateful for right now”. Write down 10 things you’re grateful for in that very moment. After you’ve written 10 things, write down anything else you can think of. The more you write, the better you’ll feel. Although it seems like only a very small thing, this is a game changer. It completely shifts your perspective and allows you to see the bigger picture Take the gratitude challenge and keep this up for 30 days. Let me know what you think about gratitude. How important is it to you? Email moyowaboyo@rcsi.ie to share your thoughts. To read more about gratitude check out http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/topic/gratitude FEBRUARY 2015

#FITNESS PANCAKE paradise! :)

DAPHNE YEN & ARUN B

ey fitness enthusiast. Its that time of the month where we dedicate a day solely for pancakes. And this year, pancakes Tuesday is on the 17th February 2015.

Many may ask, how do one who is having a strict diet enjoy this glorious day of pancakes without affecting one’s diet? Don’t worry, RCShape has got this covered with healthier alternative recipes We have protein pancakes recipes which taste as good as regular pancakes but packed with protein for GAINS. We also have whole meal recipe for those who are into keeping In shape. So don’t be the odd one out not enjoying pancake day. HAPPY PANCAKE DAY!!!

Wholemeal pancakes:

(photo on the right, courtesy Daphne Yen) INGREDIENTS • 1 Cup wholemeal flour • 1 Cup Greek yoghurt • Dash of cinnamon (because I love it) • 1 egg • 4 Tablespoon of sugar (Pro -tip: I used Splenda for healthier choice. I think you can substitute it with honey if you want it healtier or just do without. These are my interchangeable ingredients for any baking/cooking food!) • Pinch of salt • Water add to obtain desired consistency • Baking soda for fluffiness. • 1 Avocado DIRECTIONS Combine everything together. Smash the avocado separately and spread them over the layers of pancakes. If you like yours healthier than mine, don’t add the maple syrup. I also realized cooking wholemeal pancakes to normal flour pancakes take way longer. So turn up the fire and leave it on the pan longer. Wait till it’s nice brown in colour. Makes about 8 small pancakes (I used 2 spoonful of batter per pancake).

CAN HUMANS STAY HEALTHY ON A SICK PLANET? SONIA RAMKISSOON (JC2)

S

ometimes, somewhere, someone says something so profound that the world seemingly stops its continuous chaotic activity to pause and listen. This was the atmosphere that was created in the Houston Lecture Theatre on Thursday 22nd January, 2015. Quite often, we human beings succumb to the tendency to ‘zone-out’ into our own personal bubbles and dismiss the bigger picture of our environment and what’s happening to the Earth. Mrs. Juliet Duff (picture on right), a distinguished member of the Irish Doctor’s Environmental Association (IDEA), aided in the realization that ignorance is not always bliss. IDEA’s main objective is to create and contribute to the broader understanding that human health is inextricably connected to the health of the planet, consisting of both ecological and human systems. Unfamiliarity with the hazardous nature of some of the chemicals that we are exposed to in our everyday lives, does not mean it ceases to exist. Some food storage containers, unlike our RCSI ENVIRO SOC water bottles, are manufactured using Bisphenol-A (BPA) that was initially developed to mimic the activity of estrogen. Therefore, when we happily pack our foods in such seemingly harmless receptacles- it actually becomes generously coated in unstable carcinogenic polycarbonate plastic particles that disrupt the endocrine system. The presence of heavy metal mercury is not uncommon in a medical scenario either. There are a number of healthcare apparatus (including thermometers and sphygmomanometers) that expose doctors and patients alike to this neurotoxic teratogen.

“Our environment, the world in which we live and work, is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations.” - Earl Nightingale

Furthermore, hydraulic fracturing of the Earth’s deep layers of rock to extract natural gas introduces harmful fluid by-products of drilling and oil spills into the water table. Water extracted for the population near these sources, is explosive and not fit for consumption and everyday uses. Common beauty products such as soaps and shampoos may sometimes contain sodium lauryl ether sulphate, a skin irritant, or even 1,4-dioxane and hydroquinone linked to reproductive damage and cancer. These are just some of the issues that need to be addressed sooner than later. True solutions to these challenges must come from the innovative present and future generations. #INTERNATIONAL LAYVEENIEA ANANTHAN

elcome back! First of all, Happy New Year! It seems like only yesterday I was welcoming the new year 30,000 feet in the air, en route from Doha to Kuala Lumpur, and voila I’m about to complete another rotation in the space of two weeks, along with a grueling exam right after.

While currently on my three weeks break, I realized there are a couple of festivals coming by. As many of you would know, Malaysia is a country that is proud of its multiracial ethnicity, and with that comes a myriad of festivals.

Now, its time to welcome another New Year – Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year! Leaving the Year of the Horse behind, this year we will be welcoming the Year of the Sheep, in accordance with the Chinese Zodiac. There are 12 zodiac animal signs in all – Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, SHEEP, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Although it is a traditional Chinese celebration, one can’t help but get into the spirit of celebrations in Malaysia. All the malls are decorated with lanterns and various other decorative items with the main theme being red and blasting very catchy New Year songs. In addition to decorations, there will also be Lion Dance performances in restaurants and shopping malls to mark the beginning of the new year, and also as a symbol of prosperity. As with all festivals, there are wide varieties of delicacies ranging from pineapple tarts to Love letters (yes, it is a kind of delicacy!). There’s also the all time favourite- Mandarin Oranges! These are not the small oranges you can get in Dunnes, but these are the medium sized oranges (what I would say a normal sized orange). Boxes of oranges have already been available since the beginning of January for purchase to be given to family and friends. On the first day of New Year, many will welcome it with firecrackers. Tradition has it that firecrackers are used to ward off evil that will come to ruin the new year. I can see many of my neighbours who are already busy cleaning (including me!) and decorating their homes with all sorts of CNY decorative items, which are mainly as you may have already guessed, are red. To many of you who are feeling a tad bit homesick, here are a couple of remedies that I tried when I was in Dublin. Start of with cleaning your house! Trust me, there is nothing like cleaning your house thoroughly for 2 weeks that will put you into the new year mood! It’s tiring, and challenging, and as a friend of mine pointed out, good exercise. Go shopping! We all need a new pair of clothes for the New Year! It’s mandatory, and it’s therapeutic. Now, don’t go and splurge, but a couple of new items will bring back the festivity spirits within you. Feeling left out for the reunion dinner? Well you wont be the only one, so make your own! Your friends are your family too. The most important thing at the end of the day will be the spirit of togetherness. Cook some awesome meal, have a get-together, and start the tradition among your friends. And well, there’s always Skype if you really want your family around.

SAY:

Gong Xi Fa Cai

To everyone, Happy Chinese New Year, and may this year bring you loads of prosperity and good luck. FEBRUARY 2015

riedrich Trendelenburg studied in Glasgow and Berlin (MD, 1866) and was Professor of Surgery successively in Rostock, Bonn and Leipzig. His name appears in connection with Trendelenburg Position, the head-down operating position, and the two Trendelenburg Operations – one for a pulmonary embolectomy and the other a ligation of venous tributaries at the fossa ovalis. He has also given his name to a test and a sign related to the lower limb. The Brodie-Trendelenburg Test concerns competence of the sapheno-femoral valve and varicose veins, while Trendelenburg’s Sign occurs in people with weak or paralysed hip abductors and was described by him in 1895. Trendelenburg’s Sign is demonstrated by asking the patient to stand on the unaffected lower limb. The hip abductors contract and so the buttock of the opposite side rises as the pelvis tilts to take the body-weight. Next the patient stands on the affected side and, as the hip abductors are not functioning, the pelvis on the opposite (normal) side sinks. The Medical Pulse

Rotationalplasty

O

steosarcoma is a malignant disease of the osteoblast cells in the bone that affects patients under the age of twenty, most frequently those in their teens. It is the eighth most common form of childhood cancer. The treatment of choice is radical surgical removal of the affected section of bone. 90% of patients have limb salvage surgeries. However, the vast majority of these suffer from complications, such as infection, prosthetic issues or local tumour recurrence, causing further surgery and amputation to follow.

Rotationalplasty dates back to the early twentieth century but has only recently become an increasingly popular way to treat children with osteosarcoma. The procedure offers an alternative to the standard below-the-knee amputation, and is most commonly advocated for young patients with bone cancer of the distal femur. It involves a partial amputation of the affected distal femur. The lower leg and foot are then rotated 180 degrees on a vertical axis, and the tibia is then fused to the remaining proxi-

mal femur. The ankle now acts in place of the removed knee joint. The foot remains pointing backwards and will eventually slip into a prosthesis.

Although jarring in appearance, the procedure allows a biological knee joint, whereas a full leg amputation would require a longer prosthesis with a mechanical knee. As a result, the body uses much less energy with a biological knee than it would with a mechanical one. The primary reason for choosing the rotationalplasty procedure is to enhance the patient’s mobility as a prosthetic user. Especially as these patients are teens, many of them are heavily involved in sports. The intact ankle joint allows the brain to receive sensory feedback; eventually the brain will learn that the ankle is now replacing function of the knee. Teens who have had the procedure often return to their competitive sports after learning to walk and run again with their prosthesis. It is an incredible feat indeed. Currently gaining popularity in Canada, the procedure is hoped to soon spread to the United States and beyond in coming years.

Temporary Tattoo – the future of blood sugar monitoring in Diabetics

T

he University of California, San Diego has developed an ultra-thin, flexible device that monitors a patient’s glucose level accessibly stuck on the skin adhered to a decal (press-on) tattoo. The device could be a turning point in the monitoring of glucose levels, potentially eliminating the inconvenient finger prick tests.

FEBRUARY 2015

#EDUCATION

The sensor contains two small electrodes and an enzyme that reacts with glucose. The electrodes send a small painless current through the tissue bringing glucose to the surface of the skin where it then reacts with the enzyme in the patch. So far, the device has been shown to accurately monitor glucose levels in healthy patients. Non-invasive glucose monitoring has become a high area of research in recent years. For the 80,000 children diagnosed with Type I diabetes per year worldwide and the 225,840 people living with diabetes in Ireland, a non-invasive monitoring technique would be a welcome device indeed.

Global warming is too serious for the world any longer to ignore its danger or split into opposing factions on it. -Tony Blair

T

ony Blair, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom made this remark in 2005 at the Labour Party’s Annual Conference. He felt that global warming is too important an issue to be passed over due to political or emotional sensitivities. Unfortunately his cry for help went unheeded. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have declared that 2014 was officially the warmest year ever documented, with the world’s average temperature reaching a record high of 14.59oC. This should alarm us, particularly as the effects of this heat have begun to be seen across the world; in the past year, the

irreversible melting that occurred to the Antarctic ice caps has caught the attention of many media outlets, such as the Irish Independent and the National Geographic, among others, reporting a loss of over 500 cubic kilometres, an area similar to the size of the city of Hamburg. Although this loss may not lead to the apocalypse-like events seen in the thriller “The Day After Tomorrow” in which melting polar ice caps lead to the near-destruction of the northern Hemisphere, the effects of global warming are not likely to be subtle nor disregardable. NASA has predicted that if global warming continues to progress at its current rate, our planet will see heat

waves, heavy rains, droughts, rising sea levels, insect outbreaks and increased wildfires, to name but a few. This will have a dramatic effect, leading to reduced agricultural yields, food shortages, economic crises and even loss of life! We are at a crossroads in terms of our ability to manage these effects. Research is being conducted to investigate ways to reduce our impact on our planet, but if something is not done soon, it may be too late! Images from pixabay.com

Manga HONG MING

The Foundations of Japanese Otaku Culture

M

anga are comics created in Japan, or by Japanese creators in the Japanese language. Similar to Marvel/DC comics in the West, people of all ages in Japan read manga as manga covers a broad range of genres. Manga have always been hot property in Japan and Eastern Asia, and now they have also gained a significant worldwide audience, especially in the USA, France, Eastern Asia and the Middle East, especially in the 1990’s with the advent of classic manga such as Dragon Ball, Naruto and One Piece. Unlike Western comics, manga are typically printed in black-and-white. In Japan, manga are usually serialized in large manga magazines, often containing many stories, each presented in a single chapter to be continued in the next issue. A good example would be the Weekly Shounen Jump, which contain weekly chapters of Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Hunter×Hunter and Toriko amongst many others. If a manga series is successful, collected chapters may be republished into tankoubon or volumes. If a manga series is popular enough, it may be animated after or even during its run. It may also get live action TV/film adaptations as well! A good example of this would be Death Note. In this issue, I am going to introduce some of my favorite manga. They are all great works by great mangakas, or manga artists, having great plots and attractive character and background designs.

Shounen Manga Shounen manga is manga aimed at a male audience. It appeals to a large age group, though its primary audience stays roughly between the ages of 10 and 18. The most popular manga such as One Piece, Naruto and Bleach are shounen manga. I read Naruto and Bleach and despite their popularity, they are not the best shounen manga available. In most parts of Asia, most manga fans will agree that One Piece is the better choice. Two lesser known manga, Fullmetal Alchemist and Rurouni Kenshin, are even better choices than One Piece, which in itself is already a masterpiece.

Fullmetal Alchemist tells the story of Edward Elric, a particularly tal- Rurouni Kenshin tells the story of a peaceful wanderer named Himuented alchemist who through an accident years back lost his younger brother Alphonse and one of his legs. Sacrificing one of his arms as well, he used alchemy to bind his brother’s soul to a suit of armour. This lead to the beginning of the brothers’ journey to restore their bodies, in search of the legendary Philosopher’s Stone. The artwork may be simpler compared to other manga like Fairy Tail, but its story is truly engaging and the characters are very layered, leaving readers wanting for more as they finish each chapter.

ra Kenshin, after quitting his previous identity as the famous assassin Hitokiri Battousai. After arriving in Tokyo, he helps a young woman named Kamiya Kaoru, to defeat an impostor who claimed to be the Hitokiri Battousai. Hence, Kenshin begins to establish lifelong relationships with many people, including ex-enemies, while dealing with his fair share of enemies, new and old. Rurouni Kenshin has a captivating story and very interesting characters, particularly the antagonists. The fight scenes are superb and readers can also learn about the history of Japan and its samurai by reading this manga!

Characters from Rurouni Kenshin, with Himura Kenshin in centre front. Rurouni Kenshin has been adapted into three-part live action films, which I strongly recommend watching, even if you have read the manga and know most of the plot.

Shoujo Manga

Shoujo manga are manga targeting a young female audience. While shounen manga focus more on adventure and battle themes, shoujo manga focus strongly on human and romantic relationships and emotions. That’s why I prefer shoujo manga to shounen manga, as I prefer stories about love and relationships rather than reading about people fighting evil to save the world. It felt like moving from the Harry Potter and Narnia series to books by Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picoult. Most shoujo manga involve romance as the main theme, and there are many of them which tell love stories in many interesting ways. The picture to the right shows four absolutely terrific shoujo manga. From top left clockwise is Natsume Yuujinchou, Fruits Basket, Nana and Kaichou wa Maid-sama! Out of the 4, I think Nana is the best. It is incredibly realistic and it will make you shudder, laugh and cry, sometimes all at once!

Many people would have heard of Death Note. It tells the story of Light Yagami who found a mysterious black notebook on the ground with “Death Note” written on it. Light decides to use this to cleanse the world of evil by killing all the criminals. L, an ace detective, tries to track him down and thus begins an epic tale of mystery, suspense, psychology and thrill. Other than Death Note, fans of the mystery or psychological genres may enjoy Tokyo Ghoul, 20th Century Boys and Monster as well.

For readers who love sports, I would recommend Slam Dunk, which tells the story of highschool student Hanamichi Sakuragi becoming a basketball champion with his team, and in the process, gaining the love of his crush. Slam Dunk is one of the most epic sports manga out there as it does not only tell about basketball, it is also a story about perseverance, friendship and love. Fans of sports manga may want to try Cross Game, Initial D and Eyeshield 21 as well.

Death Note has been adapted into novels, anime and 2 live action The story and character designs may be old, but Slam Dunk is still a timeless classic sports manga. films, which are all excellent.

That’s it for now! I could go on and on about my favourite manga but unfortunately there is only that much of space in this column. I’ll admit manga are not books, they do not increase your vocabulary or improve your English. However, they do give a lot of enjoyment and sometimes they can just teach you something about life. I know, because I have read a lot of them and just like novels, some are excellent and some are just plain terrible. Just select the good ones and you will have a good time!

The Corzies FIVE FAVOURITE CORMAC DUFF

C

orzie, does a cynic like you really watch rom-coms? Haven’t you called them the most formulaic and sickly-sweet genre of them all? And aren’t these movies a bit dated? In answer to your questions: Yes. Yes. Shut Up. The good people who are my readers deserve to watch quality movies, damn it! You don’t have to settle for drivel like The Vow.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) Can men and women ever be “just friends”?’ That’s the age-old question this film sets out to answer. When Harry Met Sally DEFINES the genre, and no film since has surpassed it. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are flawless, setting the bar for every Matthew McConaughey- or Jennifer Aniston-vehicle that was to come. And just wait until you get to the diner scene. Oh boy. There you go, five crackers for the price of one. I’ll be back on St. Patrick’s Day for the five best Irish films ever. Over and out.

CHASING AMY (1997) Ben Affleck had his breakout role in Kevin Smith’s opus. The brilliant chemistry between the leading trio puts this film above the rest. And despite the coarse language, it has a surprisingly mature outlook on relationships.

#2

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER (2009) Zooey Deschanel is perfectly cast the dream girl in this fresh, original film. It bravely abandons formula, using a non-linear narrative to tell its “story about love, but not a love story”. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is immensely likeable as the lead in this subjective, honest, touching recollection of a relationship.

FEBRUARY 2015

ANNIE HALL (1977) I could hardly leave this out. Romcoms had been dead for the best part of two decades before Woody Allen re-invigorated the genre with this Oscar-winner. Annie Hall deserves its praise: it’s funny, influential and memorable. And it’s aged incredibly well: if you’re one of those people who won’t watch a film that’s older than you are, give this one a shot.

#5

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL (2007) Heart-throb (ahem.. or so I’ve heard) Ryan Gosling falls in love with an inflatable sex doll. It’s a sweet, endearing film that overcomes its absurd premise with a totally committed, yet restrained, performance from Gosling.
