Ergonomic Roadmap – Spotlight on Lighting Proper ergonomics play a key role in our overall health and well-being. To increase the safety, comfort, and performance of team members, it is important that we all take a proactive approach to ensuring our workspaces are adjusted correctly. When evaluating your workstation lighting, there are three aspects to consider: • • •
Light Level Screen Glare Task Lighting
Correct lighting makes work tasks easier and is essential for workplace well-being, resulting in increased focus, comfort, and productivity. Light Level Appropriate lighting without glare or shadows is important to reduce eye fatigue. • •
If you are experiencing dry eyes or blurred vision the light level may be too bright. Consider dimming or filtering light(s) if possible. Take visual rest breaks and follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and blink.
Screen Glare Ideally, the monitor screen should be free of direct and indirect glare. • • •
If your screen has outside glare, try repositioning the screen away from the primary source of light. If possible, close blinds or window coverings as well. Try adjusting the monitor brightness and/or contrast to match the area directly behind the monitor to reduce glare. If other light sources are present, dimming them can help.
Task Lighting If additional lighting is needed, task lighting, or a desk lamp can be used to help illuminate a specific area. •
Place lamp on the opposite side of the hand you write with to avoid shadows.
