Ergonomic Roadmap – Spotlight on Monitors Proper ergonomics play a key role in our overall health and well-being. To increase the safety, comfort, and performance of team members, it is important that we all take a proactive approach to ensuring our workspaces are adjusted correctly. Over the coming weeks, the 5 main components of ergonomics will be reviewed and tips on how to best adjust for optimal comfort will be shared. Monitors are the first component, and have four aspects to consider: • • • •

Height Distance Alignment Angle

Monitor adjustments are easy to make and have a big impact in overall comfort! Height For the most comfortable viewing, adjust the monitor(s) height so that the top of the screen is at—or slightly below—eye level. This should align your eyes with the top of the viewing area of the screen. •

Avoid tilting head up or bending neck down to view.

Distance Typically, the distance to place your monitor(s) is about an arms-length away. • • •

If you are squinting or leaning forward with your head or body to view, bring closer. If you are leaning away or getting overly tired eyes, move monitor back a bit. The bigger the monitor, or wider the screen, the further away you will need to be.

Alignment Proper monitor alignment minimizes neck and body rotation. •

For single monitor users, center the monitor directly in front of you.

For dual monitor users, align the midline of monitors with the midline of body. Angle monitors inward slightly to create a “V” shape. This will maintain equal focal distances.

Angle Monitors should be slightly angled upward by approximately 15 degrees for optimal viewing.
