End-of-Summer: Return to Routine

Summer is almost over and for many that means getting back into a more normal, everyday routine. No more living out of suitcases, late nights out for family outdoor movies, and having dinner delivered more nights than most because you’ve been traveling more than you’ve been at home. Summer is great in that we can get away from normalcy and just relax. But, it can be hard to adjust back to a structured work and school routine. Here are a few tips that may help you get back in the groove of things!

RO BERT ALEXANDER DESIGNER

- Car Detailing & Service - You’ve taken more than a couple road trips this summer and your car needs a TLC after all that adventure.

Stick to 3-5 things that are SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable and Timely) Here is my short list and of course the end goal for me is to add things that lead to a HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE for my family. - Get back in the habit of meal planning INCLUDING school lunches - Plan “me” time once a week - Create a HEALTHY snack cupboard - Update the white board with school activities, family time & date nights As always. LABOR DAY BBQ By Bre Anne Rudlaff Well… the end of summer is coming. It feels like just yesterday I was writing about how summer was just beginning! As our long days and warmer weather come to an end, we need to reminisce on summer activities that we shared with our family and friends. What better way to do this than to spend it with them again at an end-of-summer BBQ on Labor Day? As school draws near, the weather starts to cool, and trees begin to change, we don’t want to stress over something that should be fun and relaxing. Here are a few tips for a great, and stress free, BBQ to end the summer! 1. Make it easy and send out invites early. Allow people to arrange their schedules so everyone can have a relaxing time. 2. Make a playlist ahead of time. Create a list of music to play during the party so that you don’t have to stress over fussing with a radio dial or picking the right songs while everyone is waiting! 3. Food is always the staple of the BBQ. Be sure to provide plenty for your guests including snacks before and after the main meal.

6. Beverages can be made easy by providing cans and bottles to prevent spills. Be sure to provide a bottle opener if needed. 7. To ease the stress for everyone, make sure that there is supervision around anything children could get hurt on. No one wants an unexpected trip to the hospital. After 8. Board games and cards are great for keeping your guests of all ages entertained! 9. Take photos! Capture moments and memories with a camera so pictures can be developed and shared each year with your family and friends both new and old. 10. Provide lighting if your party will venture into the night and be sure to prepare for bad weather. Provide a tent or shelter for your guests if your home is unavailable. Now you can share together the fun memories you made over the summer! Relax and enjoy the warmer weather because before we know it, winter will come!

4. Finger foods are also easy to serve at backyard parties. Grab some easy crisps, dips, and sauces that meets the interests of your guests. 5. Desserts! Jell-O, ice cream, and cakes are simple to make and can really fix a sweet tooth. SUNSET COAST LIVING | AUGUST 2019 | 5

FEATURE FAMILY Stronger Together: MEET THE RUDLAFF SISTERS BY NATALIE HOEPF PHOTOS PROVIDED BY RAINSTORM PHOTO WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK CITY PLUMBING, HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING FOR SPONSORING THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORY.

M

eet Cassondra and BreAnne Rudlaff. These sisters have in interesting story to share that is unique to our community. Throughout some recent hardships within their family, Cassondra and BreAnne kept their close bond with each other and never lost their sense of family. Unlike some of the other stories we have shared, these ladies have gone through some struggles within the last few years that brought them closer as sisters. Growing up, they lived in Berrien Springs with their mom, dad, and younger brother. It wasn’t until they were the ages of 21 and 23 when their parents decided to get a divorce. After their parents became separated, their mom moved to North Carolina suddenly and their childhood home was listed on the market. The sisters then moved into a house in a quiet little community in Niles. Moving in together was not something that they had planned on from the beginning, however, with the rest of their family falling apart, they wanted to be together. Many other families around the area also may unfortunately struggle with similar circumstances. However, these sisters wanted to share with us that even as one relationship falls apart, others can grow stronger. Cassondra, 25, is a successful real estate agent at Coastline Realty Group in Berrien Springs. She is also the wine club manager at Dablon Winery in Baroda. Cassondra is always on the go; however, she still finds time to care for her energetic dog, Kona. Kona is a 6-month-old Husky who loves to pick up sticks in the yard and play with the neighborhood kids. BreAnne, 23, is a behavioral technician at the Logan Autism Learning Center in Benton Harbor. “Working with kids and teaching them,” she says, “is an amazing experience that I am so thankful for each and every day.” Bre received her bachelor’s in psychology at Olivet College and graduated

in the winter of 2017. She hopes to go back to school and get her masters to become a Board-Certified Behavioral Analyst one day. The Rudlaff sisters make it an important point to take time for each other even with their busy lives. They have what they call “sister dates”. Sister dates include going shopping, going to dinner, or watching a movie at home to catch up on everything going on in their lives. One of their favorite vacations included the Mexico sun at a resort in Puerto Vallarta. The all-inclusive vacation with just the two of

them was exactly what the sisters needed. “We laid on the beach all day, not worrying about work or issues going on at home. We went to fancy dinners and shows every night and just got to relax. That was one of those vacations that you can never forget.” Cassondra and BreAnne love living in Southwest Michigan. They grew up in Berrien Springs and have stayed around the area ever since. Cassondra says, “The beaches and views are unlike anywhere else. We have never taken for granted how amazingly lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area with everything it has to offer. We love the restaurants, the people, and all the resources we have in Southwest Michigan. I hope to stay here, close to my family and my sister, for many years to come.” The Rudlaff sisters would also like to thank all the sponsors for making our community magazine possible.

THE BENEFITS OF YOGA by April Kelly, Certified Yoga Instructor Have you been wanting to start doing yoga, but aren’t sure how to begin? Are you ready to go to a class but aren’t sure what to expect? Yoga has been growing in popularity because it can help people of all fitness levels. This makes it really easy to find a yoga class near you to attend. Most yoga studios offer at least a few different class styles to meet the needs of various participants. Consider your goals, or your reason for starting a yoga practice. Are you looking to reduce stress and find mental clarity? A meditation and yoga class, or a gentle or restorative class will have these benefits. These benefits can also be found in almost every class style as you are practicing yoga. Most yoga classes include a few minutes of meditation and a focus on concentration and breathing. Are you looking to use yoga as a strengthening program or as your main source of movement and exercise? If your fitness level is high, you could look for a power yoga or vinyasa class. You might look for a mixed level class if your fitness level is fair to moderate. If you have been mostly sedentary and are just starting to exercise, a “beginner” or “gentle” class is a great way to start. Are you injured or in pain? You may be looking to yoga as a rehabilitation method. In this case, look for a class with “gentle” or “restorative” in the class description. You might even find classes or workshops that cater to your specific injury such as “yoga for lower back pain” or “yoga for arthritis”.

Regardless of your fitness level and reasons for practicing yoga, most teachers and studios are happy to help you in any way they can to feel comfortable and safe in class. It is also recommend that you have been approved by a doctor to exercise, or have no existing health condition that prevents you from exercising. Once you find a studio, and choose a class to attend, many studios offer online sign ups and new student registration. Visit the studio website to read their policies. It is often recommended to arrive 10-15 minutes early especially if you are new to the facility. Yoga is typically practiced with bare feet, and lightweight clothing that is stretchable and easy to move around in. Bring a bottle of water, and a hair tie if you have long hair. Most studios will have mats that you can borrow or you can bring your own. The atmosphere in a yoga studio is usually quiet and relaxing. Sometimes the lights will be dimmed or turned off as class begins, to foster deeper concentration. In every class, there will be people of various fitness levels who are all attending class with you for their own reasons. When you are practicing yoga, especially at first, you may find yourself comparing your practice to someone else. Beginners may find it helpful to observe other students to add understanding of form and posture. Keep in mind, however that everyone will look a little different in each pose. There is really nobody who is “better” at yoga than another person. Yoga is a very personal experience and feeling the poses correctly is more important than each pose looking a certain way. As you begin practicing yoga, be careful not to compare yourself to someone else. Yoga has so many benefits and can help almost everyone. Your local yoga studio is going to be happy to help you begin yoga! Namaste

COLOR ME RED! Articlw & Photos Submitted by Final Design Associates Inc.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR

PHOTOS TAKEN AFTER REMODEL Color is a great tool to use in your home to have some fun and be different. Whether you are remodeling a vacation home or your everyday space, consider working with color in a new way. For example, Harbert home has accents of red throughout and the new kitchen gives a punch of what to expect as soon as you enter the home. With the red cabinets and the pine floor/ ceiling being the predominant features, the designer selected a solid white countertop on the perimeter to calm the space. The original wood island countertop was refurbished and stained darker to keep with the cabin ambiance. The cabinetry is a semi-custom product, but the designer added some features to give it that custom look. These details include cut outs and applied molding at the toe kick, bead board end panels, and open base cabinets for displaying. This kitchen is a showstopper, and while some may not be willing to take the risk of going so bold, this room is full of energy and visual interest. Had it been done in a plain white finish, there wouldn’t be much to talk about. So push your envelope and go outside our comfort zone. You’ll love how you find yourself surrounded with color!

LANDSCAPING 101: ORNAMENTAL GRASSES by Barbara Eastman

If you’re looking for high impact-low maintenance plantings for your garden, consider ornamental grasses. Dozens of varieties come in a wide range of colors, forms, textures, and heights. Some have mound-like compact profiles and clumping characteristics that are perfect for borders or edging, while others grow to be well over 6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. Some species stand upright and others cascade, creating an almost waterfall effect. They are deer resistant, and because they are perennials, are economical. While most like sunny spots, there are varieties that thrive in the shade. ZEBRA GRASS Also known as Japanese Silver Grass, Zebra Grass adds a creamy yellow and green striped foliage to your landscape. Big copper plumes sprout in late summer. Many florists use the plumes in fresh or dried arrangements. The US Department of Agriculture says it’s hardy in our planting zone. MORNING LIGHT GRASS This plant grows 4 to 6 feet tall and can spread out to 4 feet or more. It features a dense clump of upward-arching stems and leaves which give it a rounded, fountain-like appearance. Foliage turns attractive shades of yellow to orange by mid-fall before gradually fading to beige or tan for winter. ADAGIO GRASS Sometimes referred to as Maiden Grass, Adagio is an outstanding grass with low maintenance and exceptional tolerance for a variety of conditions. Provides a nice winter interest to your landscaping. MARRAM GRASS This is the native grass that you see around the dunes and lakeshore. A great grass for extending the lakefront naturally into your landscape. Like all grasses, it requires very little maintenance.
