LET NATURE HEAL WHAT AILS YOU BY LINA LANDESS
“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” — John Muir
HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED THE STUNNING SILENCE OF FRESHLY FALLEN SNOW? Discerned the enchanting call of distant birdsong? Stood awestruck at the edge of the ocean at sunset or dawn? If you have, you know that for those few moments—no matter what was going on in your life or whether you were concerned about your health, family, work or your bills—nothing else mattered. You were momentarily ‘lost’ in the experience of the natural world. Or, perhaps, you were found in that moment. Eckhart Tolle, a well-known spiritual teacher, speaks of nature as a portal; an opening into a peace and stillness that can remind us of our own sacred essence. No matter what appears to be happening in our life, there is a deeper, richer experience that awaits us when we step into the natural world. A world in which, when our minds are quiet enough, we recognize our connectedness with all things. When we spend time in nature, when we feel the wind in our hair, the salty ocean mist on our face, or lie on the grass and gaze up at the starry vastness above, our mind grows quiet and calm. We experience a natural sense of peace and contentment. We experience ourselves. In that peaceful frame of mind where there is no upset, no fear, no sickness, our ‘whole being’ relaxes and expands; we release stress—one of the primary causes of ill health. The healing benefits of nature have sparked interest in psychology circles, too. From GoodTherapy.org, “Ecotherapy, also known as nature therapy or green therapy, is the applied practice of the emergent field of ecopsychology… Ecotherapy, in many cases, stems from the belief that people are part of the web of life and that our psyches are not isolated or separate from our environment.”
“In one study conducted by psychologist Terry Hartig, participants were asked to complete a 40-minute cognitive task designed to induce mental fatigue. Following the task, participants were randomly assigned 40 minutes of time, in one of three conditions: walking in a nature preserve, walking in an urban area, or sitting quietly while reading magazines and listening to music. Participants who had walked in the nature preserve reported less anger and more positive emotions than those who engaged in the other activities. In a similar study conducted by Mind, a mental health charity organization, a nature walk reduced symptoms of depression in 71% of participants, compared to only 45% of those who took a walk through a shopping center.” “Many other studies help to demonstrate the positive effects of nature on both physical and mental health. Studies have shown, for example, that children who live in buildings with a nearby green space may have a greater capacity for paying attention, delaying gratification, and inhibiting impulses than children who live in buildings surrounded by concrete. Children who have been diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) display fewer symptoms after spending time in a green environment than when they spend time indoors or in non-green outdoor environments. The addition of flowers and plants to a workplace can positively affect creativity, productivity, and flexible problem solving, while the presence of animals may reduce aggression and agitation among children and those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.” In reality, we don’t need scientists or therapists to tell us that spending time in nature is of great benefit, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. All we really need to do is take a walk in the woods, see a bluebird (there are several drinking at our heated birdbath right now!), or feel the warmth of the sun on our skin to know that we simply feel better. Our perspective changes and we just feel more alive. The great challenges in today’s world are 1) our attention spans are so short and our to-do lists so long, that we rarely remember to take a timeout in the natural world, and 2) our minds are so captivated by the screens in our hands, that we fail to notice the world around us; natural or otherwise. In our rush to do, do, do, we have forgotten how to simply be. When we do take that time, we realize that there is a healthier, warmer, more enlivening experience just beyond the office door. So, no matter what you may be involved in, I hope you will take a few minutes right now and glance out the window. Better yet, step outside. Sit in the sun for a moment. Take off your shoes and let the grass tickle your toes. Let nature have your full attention. Let nature heal what ails you.

THE POWER OF A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE PART 1 BY RAJAN NARAYANASWAMY
“More important than what is behind you and what is ahead of you is what is IN you! Seek it and centered in it act and live.” — Swami Chinmayananda
WHAT IS THE “IN YOU” THAT THE RENOWNED SAINT SWAMI CHINMAYANANDA IS REFERRING TO? Is it our heart? Is it the brain? Or something else? We’ll get to the answer to that later. For this moment, I want you to stop whatever you are doing (after reading this), close your eyes and go into your feeling of existence; your absolute and confirmed feeling that you exist. That feeling about which you never had a doubt even when you were newly born into this world and you wailed loudly to the delight of the doctor who rest assured that your respiratory tract was clear. You were aware and conscious the moment you entered this world and you KNEW that you exist. What if I told you that you were aware and conscious even BEFORE you were born and even conceived? And I am not the one saying that, the ancient scriptures are!
WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE? Spirituality is the teaching that points to something deeper and higher within us that we usually do not notice in the course of our mundane activities. In the Bhagavad Gita, this is referred to as raja guhyam or ‘the royal secret’. Spiritual practices are meant to help us uncover that secret. There are practices that may be required to be done ‘out there’ but all practices, ultimately, are only meant to lead you inwards to that place from where all your experiences are said to arise. We should be clear to differentiate spirituality from religion. Religion is an organized version of spirituality which follows the teachings of a particular prophet or book and bears loyalty to that. Spirituality is not based on anyone else but is totally one’s own discovery. You could be on Mars all alone and discover your deep spiritual core!
A NON-INTELLECTUAL LEARNING
“This freedom is worth more than all the lands on earth. To be one with the truth for just a moment is worth more than the world and life itself.” – Jalaluddin Rumi The goal of all spiritual practices is to bring you face to face with your true nature which is described in the scriptures as sat-chit-ananda or existence-consciousness-bliss. This is a transformative experience of “unity with all things” like no other known experience. Transformation is an effect that happens at a very deep level, unlike change which is more on the surface. Inner transformation happens by spiritual practices and not by intellectual analysis. I like to give the example of tasting honey for the first time. Let’s say you have never tasted honey and somebody describes the taste of honey to you as “sweet somewhat like sugar, viscous, yellow, sticky liquid.” Ten more people try to explain the taste of honey to you in their own unique ways. After having heard all this you are then given a spoon of honey and you taste it. Once you actually taste it, you know the taste of honey in a way which cannot really be described in words. This tasting of honey is a non-intellectual knowing. The taste is somehow “embedded” into your psyche in a way that if you taste honey after a gap of 5 years you will immediately recognize it. (next page)
This is an example of a “mini” inner transformation. Spiritual transformation happens when you know the deep inner feeling of existence and consciousness in a way similar to the way that you knew the taste of honey. No amount of reading or listening can match the actual experience of unity, just as nothing can match the actual tasting of the honey. In Vedanta, this experience is called Samadhi. Zen Buddhists call it kensho. However, the reading and intellectualization is not a useless activity, but constitutes part of the spiritual practice. This is an endless topic of argument in the spiritual community as to whether any reading or practices are actually needed to realize our true nature.
WHY SPIRITUAL PRACTICE? – THE STORY OF THE “SIXTH IDLI.” Here is a story often related to traditional Vedantic teachers. A villager went to the city for some business. After resting for the night when he woke up early, he was very hungry. He walked into a small restaurant and asked the manager, “Can you give me something to satisfy my hunger?” The manager told him, “We have hot idlis (an Indian steamed rice cake). Each idli is a rupee. Please take a seat.” The villager ordered one idli. It was not enough to appease his hunger so he ordered one more. He went on like this till the sixth idli when finally he was satisfied. He finished up and paid the manager one rupee and started walking away. The manager stopped him and said, “You need to pay six rupees since you had six idlis.” The villager replied, “I asked you to give me something that will satisfy my hunger. It was only the sixth idli that appeased my hunger so I will pay only for that.” In the penultimate part of their spiritual journey, spiritual seekers often forget the ‘five idlis’ they ate and think that only the ‘sixth idli’ would have been sufficient. Everything we practice in our spiritual journey plays a role to prepare us and bring us to that last step when we recognize the truth. Never say that
all the yoga, breathing, chanting, charitable works, meditation, and listening you have done were useless. In fact, they were the ‘five idlis’ that were essential to prepare the ‘sixth idli’ to appease the hunger. Rejecting the five idlis is an act of arrogance and foolishness. The spiritual path is a great mystery and transformation is an ever-so-subtle unfolding. The great poet Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “The years teach much which the days never know.” Our views and opinions of the world change unnoticed and if you look back a few years you will be surprised how much they have changed. The transformation through spiritual practice also happens like that. So tread softly and with humility on this path because your destination is very noble and extremely sacred indeed.
PRACTICE #1 Sit in a comfortable posture in a quiet place. Switch on your favorite musical piece, especially one that makes you experience waves of pleasure. Being very still pay intense attention to your music and try to find out as to where your enjoyment of this piece arises from. All enjoyment arises from a deeper place within us although it may appear on the surface as coming from the mind or brain. Repeated practice of this makes us more sensitive to this enjoyment and its presence. Visit blog.TheWellnesUniverse.com to read parts 2 & 3.

3 WAYS TO USE YOUR VOICE IN A HEALTHY WAY BY LAURA DI FRANCO
From the Heart to The Tongue; 3 Tips for Making Your Voice Heard and Your Soul Sing It seems like my entire healing career has been about this: rediscovering my voice, healing the wounds getting in the way of using it, and practicing using it out loud for the benefit of others. Today I’d like to give you some powerful practical tools for your journey; tools that’ll inspire you to express your voice until your soul sings. “You move the words from your heart to your tongue.” My acupuncturist was trying to describe how to say what I needed to say to my husband and make it feel like it was coming from a true and unapologetic place inside me, without judging or attacking him. No small task if you understand the difficulties of communicating when you’re afraid; when you’re so triggered you feel small, powerless and paralyzed. I understood what she was trying to teach me. But still, when she role-played with me, she always came up with gobs of extremely amazing, just-perfect, feeling words. I found myself asking if I could just record her so I could memorize it and regurgitate later. But that wasn’t the point. The point was to center myself in my own wisdom, intuition, and essence, and speak from that place, no matter what I was feeling during one of our frequent arguments. “I always get so defensive,” I admitted to her. “I either fight back, or run away into the bedroom and hide,” I continued to say, “I can never seem to talk to him in a way that’s mutually beneficial, or that doesn’t trigger some horrible reaction in him.” I’d been trying to communicate with my husband for twenty years. You’d think I would have learned a thing or two in my psych classes, healing classes and networking classes about good communication skills. And he’d certainly learned some stuff in his leadership classes that could have helped. When it came to talking about the things that mattered, however, we failed, over and over again; always letting the other person know what they were doing wrong and what they needed to fix. It turns out, I’d need another level of awareness and a fierce discipline of it to be able to communicate in a way that felt like it was coming from my heart, and not my ego. I’d have to be okay being wrong if I wanted to be happy. And I’d have to be courageous in my attempts to speak about what mattered to me, even when I thought it would trigger an argument. Oddly enough, getting a divorce wouldn’t fix our communication problems. In fact, after we separated we’d have to engage more than we did before to sort out finances and kid issues. One day, I sat and thought, “ha-ha, jokes on you – now you have to talk to him more.” So, I conjured up my wise goddess voice and she said, “okay, now you have an opportunity to get really good at this!” And she was right. My opportunities became apparent every time we’d get on the phone to make arrangements, sort out paperwork, or create plans for the kids. I dreaded it every time. Until I realized, I could do it differently. What did differently look like?
It was softer, more in the moment, used more feeling-words, and was highly aware of feeling triggered into defense mode. A different way of communicating meant I didn’t rehearse or think too much. It meant I would have to practice the awareness I preached, and then adjust when it didn’t go well. As I happily move toward the other side of the tough parts, I’d love to offer you all struggling with speaking up in your relationships some ideas about the awareness you’ll need to move words from your heart to your tongue and allow your soul to sing in the process. Here are three ways to use your voice in a healthy way and be out loud in the relationships that matter the most to you: 1. Stay present, in your body, first. If you’re coming from a centered, grounded, embodied place, your words will feel lighter, freer and truer. When you’re speaking from this more soul-driven place, your words will come from a place that serves your highest good. Speaking from your soul doesn’t come with regrets. Speaking from this embodied place is how you move your words from your heart to your tongue. 2. Speak about the way you feel. When you speak from a feeling state nobody can really give you an opinion about it, because they can’t feel what you feel. Talking about what you feel, instead of what you think keeps the conversation about you, rather than attacking someone else. Speaking about the way you feel; even and especially when those feelings are vulnerable, softens the conversation and helps to bring the charge down a notch. As soon as voices are raised, tensions heighten, and then… trigger alert! It takes a certain kind of warrior to speak from this centered and relaxed place. It takes practice but it will change everything. 3. Don’t over think. If you think too much about what you’ll say, or how you’ll say it, or what perfect words you want to speak, it’ll be much more difficult than speaking from the grounded, embodied and feeling state. You’ll add meaning and baggage onto the voice that just wants to be heard. Instead of over-thinking or analyzing the situation, try speaking from a place that’s more sensation-driven. And instead of thinking at all, while the other person is speaking, remember to listen first. Making the mistake of not listening and instead, thinking about what you’ll say next, will kill a good conversation. One last thought about speaking from your heart and being brave in your conversations: it takes time, energy, effort, and courage. When it comes to this kind of effort, make sure the person you’re speaking with matters to you. If the relationship is toxic or abusive, you’ll need more resources to deal with it than these. These thoughts are for a willing, open and aware partner who’s willing to meet you halfway on the journey. Who’s willing to listen. And who’s willing to not always be right. When you begin to move your words from your heart to your tongue you’ll feel free. You’ll feel no regrets about what’s been said. You’ll feel your worth, right inside of the conversation. You’ll remember you matter and your voice and soul deserve to be out loud in the world.
