CONTENTS One of the oldest states in Europe. It became independent in 1143 and maintains its borders since the thirteenth century. A country of discoverers and pioneers, forerunners of international trade, Portuguese are today leaders in niche markets in telecoms, technology and services. A country in Southern Europe, proud of its history, which can be felt from North to South, from the mainland to the islands of Madeira and the Azores. A small country, where everything is at hand. A short bus ride reaches anywhere; a walking tour and discover unique places; a mild climate, with 3000 hours of sun per year and 850km of beaches kissed by the Atlantic; a unique cultural heritage, counting 15 sites classified World Heritage by UNESCO. A country where tradition and modernity go hand in hand. A country with an old-fashioned charm, with medieval castles, historic villages, winding slopes. A country that offers you good food, fine wines and the friendliness of a people that always welcomes you with open arms.

PORTUGAL AT A GLANCE

North Region is the birthplace and the history of the Portuguese Nation! Guimarães Castle, birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. It’s also the location of Douro Wine Region - UNESCO World Heritage Site -, where the grapes used in the famous Port wine grow; The City of Porto UNESCO World Heritage Site - where the Douro river meets the Atlantic.

Center Region is a variety of nature, history and culture.

Coimbra, the University - UNESCO World Heritage Site - the fabulous Joanina library. Cities dominated by stone architecture. Historic villages, built in schist and granite. The Natural Park of Serra da Estrela with its springs. A region full of history on rough battles and stories about the roots of Portugal before becoming a nation.

Lisbon, the capital, on the banks of the Tagus River. Lisbon is museums, monuments, palaces and parks, castles and clubs, trendy bars and of course Fado. In the summer months Lisbon is as if under a blue dome – such is the color of the sky- . Lisbon has a natural light and its own and unparalleled charm. It has become a popular destination in Europe for its beauty and an enviable climate.

Alentejo Region, golden plains out of sight. Inland, vast wheat fields; along the coast, beaches yet to be explored. Here and there one can see fortresses, on top of the hills, as Marvão or Monsaraz; or just simple dolmens that remind us of the magic of the place. At the top of small hills rise small villages and castles that remind battles and conquests; patios and gardens witnessing the Arab influence.

Algarve Region is warm sea, beaches - among the best in the world-, mild climate, holiday homes, hotels and luxury resorts; golf courses; small fishing villages - as Tavira - and the small port of Sagres; the Natural Park of Costa Vicentina; ancient castles, once occupied by the Moors; the Cape St. Vincent, once considered the end of the world.

Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, where nature and vegetation are pure; nine islands, all different, all a surprise. One can see whales and dolphins frolicking in the sea or volcanic landscapes covered in green; blue and green lakes, craters of extinct volcanoes and the steam rising from the earth.

Madeira Islands “The Garden of the Atlantic.” This archipelago, with an unusual atmosphere, famous for its

constant spring climate and the beauty and richness of its landscape. In the middle of the Atlantic, the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are a natural beauty retreat.

of the leading physicians of Jewish and also Portuguese history, such as Amato Lusitano (1511-1568) and Elijah Montalto (1567-1616). Hundreds of Inquisition archives give notice of secret practice of Judaism in this city during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Arrival at the hotel in Belmonte. 5th Day - Belmonte / Guarda / Belmonte

Breakfast at the Hotel. In the morning, walking tour of Belmonte. We will visit the Jewish Museum that recalls and documents the Jewish History and Culture in Portugal; the first signs of their presence in the territory; major festivals and rituals with highlight for Easter or Pesach; deployment areas and zones of influence; it also recalls the troubled times through a Memorial of the Victims of the Inquisition. One zone of the Museum “speaks” about History and cultural anthropology of the local Jewish community, mentioning the major feasts of the liturgical calendar – from Shabat, Pessach Hannukah–, costumes, professions, the everyday life and other uses and customs, revealing aspects of crypto-Judaism and of the “Work of Redemption”. After the visit to the Museum we will follow to the Synagogue. The first Synagogue of Belmonte dates from 1297 according to an inscription in Hebrew characters which can be seen at the actual Synagogue Beit Eliahu, (actual religious leader Rabbi Elisha Salas, sent to Portugal from Shavei Israel – Jerusalém-). In the afternoon we will go to the City of Guarda, the highest in the Country at 1052 meters. Walking tour through the city center, Old Square (Praça Velha), the Catholic Cathedral in Gothic style. The Jewish Quarters; the old and the new. The Jewish Quarter is one of the most typical areas of the Historical Center of primitive Guarda. The houses are sober, of rural form, single-storey or with two floors, characterized mainly by the wide gate and narrow door, being the first to access the trade and the second to access the residence. The expansion of Jews to other areas of the city, where they have founded a new Jewish quarter, was due to the substantial increase of the Commune in the late fifteenth century. Return to the Hotel. Accommodation.

6th Day - Belmonte / Trancoso / Moncorvo / Belmonte

Breakfast at the Hotel. On this day we follow to Trancoso, where the presence of Jews is very old, it is believed prior to the Portuguese nationality. The city architecture is typical of a people of various trades, manual or commercial, where the cruciforms have a dual function of evocation and tes-

timony of the Torah followers. We will visit the Church of S. Peter, where the poet Bandarra (15001545) rests; the Jewish quarter, which makes you go back in the History, captivates and invites to contemplation; we will walk along the streets showing an architecture attributed to the Jews, with cruciform inscriptions of various sizes and shapes, typical Squares where they lived; the House of the Black Cat with the facade decorated with the Lion of Judah, The Gates of Jerusalem, the Pelican, the Jew on his way to Synagogue (inclined); Inscriptions in Hebrew characters and dates, ‘Jacob’s Dream’ and marks of trades; The Stained glass window with the Menorah in the Square of Pelourinho and the Menorah in housing. We continue our journey to Moncorvo. A brief visit, with emphasis to the Church, temple of staggering proportions and very strong structure, the layout of the streets and squares, the gardens. The city was the house of Rabi Mór who has, since D.Dinis, seven delegates, called listeners, placed in the capital of each district, whom exert jurisdiction over the Jews in the entire district. Return to the Hotel in Belmonte. Accommodation.

7th Day - Belmonte / Castelo de Vide / Évora

Breakfast at the Hotel. Departure to Castelo de Vide where the second largest set of ogival doors in the world can be found. In this village of Alentejo one can feel the meeting of different cultures. We will go through the steep streets of this picturesque village and visit the old synagogue. In Castelo de Vide, the Jewish quarter developed on the slopes of the village facing east. Although established in one of the roughest areas, the neighborhood was crossed by a fundamental axis of communication between the castle and the outside and vice versa. The Jewish presence in Castelo de Vide left some material evidences, in particular the building where it’s believed to have worked the Medieval Synagogue. Other buildings on the Street of the Jewish quarter, still show what remains of the ancient Jewish tradition of marking their faith on the door jamb. Castelo de Vide maintains in the topology of its streets the testimony of Jewish presence and also of the persecution of the Holy Office to the New Christians. In the doorways it is possible to see the places where the Mezuás were put, disguises of chandeliers in between the carved olive tree branches, profession marks… In the afternoon we head to Évora. Checkin and accommodation. Portugal

8th Day - Évora/Lisbon

Breakfast at the Hotel. Full day tour to the city of Évora, ancient city where, some houses, still exhibit marks of ‘mezuzot’, one of which was identified as synagogue. In this monumental complex you can admire the well-preserved walls surrounding the city, the Roman Temple, the Inquisition Palace, the Cathedral (founded in 1186, consecrated in 1204 , is

the largest medieval cathedral in the country), the Bone Chapel. The Jewish Quarter of Évora was one of the most important of Portugal. It occupied, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the western blocks of the city, near the actual Giraldo Square. As in other Jewish Quarters of Portugal, the streets are narrow and the houses have architectural features with portals and windows dating back to medieval times but denoting a commercial function or of worship, when it comes to locations that worked as Syna-

gogues. The Palace and former Prisons of the Inquisition, still bearing the inquisitorial coat of arms, are located near the Cathedral. Return to Lisbon by the end of the day. Accommodation.
