Reach the Sky Bulletin TEAM COUNTRY CURIOSITY ARTICLE: SLOVENIA AND ŠENTJUR Slovenia is a country in Southern Europe. The capital city is Ljubljana and its language is Slovenian. It has about 2 million inhabitants. It is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union and NATO. It is bordered by Italy (to the west), Austria (to the north), Hungary (to the northeast), Croatia (to the south and southeast) and Adriatic Sea (to southwest). In the past Illyrian and Celtics tribes lived in Slovenia and in the first century Slavs inhabited Slovenia. From 1335 until 1918 it was ruled by Austria. In 1918 it became a part of Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the 2nd world war it was divided during Italy, Hungary and Germany. In 1945 it became again a part of Yugoslavia. It

became an independent country in June 1991. Nowadays its currency is Euro. Slovenia has mainly continental climate but also sub-Mediterranean and Alpine climate. Slovenia has a developed economy. Almost two thirds of people work in services, one third in industry and construction. The main industries are motor vehicles electronic equipment, machinery, pharmaceuticals and fuels. Slovenia offers tourist a wide variety of natural and cultural sights. It is rich with spas, famous for the winemaking and it attracts tourists with the sea. It has two international airports and Port of Koper with lines to all major world parts. Šentjur is a town in eastern Slovenia. It is the seat of the municipality of Šentjur. It lies on the Voglajna River.

Its name waws changed from Sveti Jurij pri Celju to Šentjur pri Celju in 1952 and to Šentjur in 1990. It has about 18000 inhabitants- Its mayor is Mr. Marko Diaci. Šentjur has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The most important archaeological site is in Rifnik. Rifnik is now an archaeological park. All of the foundings are on display in the museum in Šentjur. The most important citizens from Šentjur are: Anton Martin Slomšek, brothers Ipavec, Blaž Kocen and Franjo Malgaj.
