The right balance of patterns, colors and textures is key in creating simple yet striking spaces. Concentrate on highlighting your bedroom wall using texture by having it done in bricks. This finish is reminiscent of old buildings and immediately adds a rustic charm to your space. Accentuate with simple finishes and throw in some color and pattern for visual interest.

Use the calming effect of gray tones in the bathroom for a more relaxing setting as you take a nice long bath after a long tiring day. Combine warm and cool tones for contrast and interest. The play on the different shades will go well with white bathroom fixtures, as well as with some wood accents. Grays will also provide a gorgeous backdrop for fresh botanicals.

elicious recipes don’t just rely on ingredients. What makes a dish even more appetizing to the palate has to do with the way it is cooked. Smeg understands this formula. The Italian brand has committed to delivering appliance technology in style. The world’s greatest chefs applaud the refined superiority of Smeg freestanding cookers. As the collection makes its way to the kitchens of young homeowners, traditional cooking gets a modern interpretation.

Preparing different meals for any feast is made easy. The gas hob provides multiple burner solutions from ultra-high heat oriental cooking to extremely low simmer settings; while the electric hob comes in induction or ceramic cooktops with heating zones that can be set to your desired power levels. The ovens offer the largest capacities in its class. With five shelf positions to choose from and its Circulaire function, you can cook multiple dishes at the same time without worrying about the flavors and odors mixing. On top of that, the excellent insulation prevents any heat from escaping the cavity, making it 20% more energy efficient than others in the market while keeping the kitchen cool and conducive to cooking.

revolutionizing rest At the end of the day, each one of us craves some rest and relaxation as we crawl into our beds to get a good night’s sleep. However, the quality of your much needed shuteye depends partly on the mattress that you have – a common thing that most homeowners do not feel the need to invest in, until they have experienced sleepless nights tossing and turning. “With over 85 years of scientific research and innovation, Dunlopillo mattresses provide superior comfort and support. We are proud to launch our newest product that will help you get the good night’s sleep that you deserve – the Talasilver Wave,” says Jam Chan, managing director of Ital Design Furniture, the exclusive distributor of Dunlopillo in the Philippines. A revolutionary latex technology (that has the best ecological footprint in the entire latex history) using electromagnetic waves sets the Talasilver Wave apart from other mattresses. Apart from its unique design that allows for spinal alignment and better ventilation and air circulation, the Talasilver Wave eliminates and prevents growth of harmful bacteria with its Nano-Silver Technology. travel through transition La Europa Ceramica recently launched Transition, the newest tile collection under the Italian brand Mirage, exclusively carried by the company. The Transition Collection won the prestigious Red Dot Design award, recognizing it for its excellence, originality and innovation. Made of 25% recycled material, it is environmentally friendly from its manufacturing process to its packaging. “Transition means passing through, a passage from one situation to another,” says Mirage Export Manager Claudio Abbundo during the launch of the collection last June 9, 2016 at the La Europa Ceramica Showroom at Robins Design Center in Ortigas. The collection’s concept was “an imaginary journey” through the five famous Italian cities of Ostuni, Lecce, Turin, Matera, and Milan. a breath of fresh air Our home serves as our personal oasis in the middle of the city. We invest time and money in order to ensure that these structures shelter us and protect us from the elements. With climate change and the deteriorating quality of air all over the world, we need to take extra precautions in making sure that our families stay healthy and strong. In a study conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, we spend approximately 90% of our time indoors. However, the quality of the air inside our homes could actually be five times worse than the quality of the air outside. A combination of odors, mould, bacteria, paint pigments, dust, chemicals from cleaning products, furnishing materials and animal hair could cause allergic reactions to anyone in the family. While vacuuming and regular cleaning helps, it is always best to invest in an air purifier that will ensure that the pollutants do not stay and revolve around in our rooms. Backed up by intensive research and a lifelong commitment to improving the quality of life of their consumers, the engineers at Dyson combined their expertise to create the Dyson Pure Cool Link Purifiers. These fans are equipped with a 360° high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter that removes 99.97% of allergens and pollutants in the air including pet dander, pollen and even bacteria, regardless of the size of the room. With the help of the Dyson Link App, Dyson users can monitor and control the air quality of their homes remotely. They can also receive alerts when the air quality inside their house deteriorates, giving them the option to adjust the settings before it reaches the harmful levels. Improve the air quality and the temperature of your home with the help of the new Dyson Pure Cool Link Purifiers. An air purifier and fan in one, this amazing new technology hooks up with your smartphone, and makes taking precautions for your family’s health such a breeze.

28

Dyson Pure Cool Link Purifiers are accredited with the Quiet Mark by the Noise Abatement Society, and will continue to monitor and respond to air quality while you sleep.

Relaxing Retreats Two designers share their tips and tricks in creating relaxing spaces Produced by KARA GONZALES

E

veryone looks forward to going home to a warm restful home at the end of a long tiring day. Our homes serve as our personal sanctuaries, our own private hideaways, and places where we retire to for some rest and relaxation. Having a peaceful atmosphere in our homes can be achieved with the right furniture pieces, color choices and these invaluable advice from designers who tell us all about making our spaces cozy and comfortable retreats.

30

jesy cruz jesychristopherc@gmail.com

Creating a relaxing space could be tricky, since it is a concept that is very subjective. In general, a relaxing space would always be correlated to a spa-esque ambiance but one man’s cure could be another man’s poison. The rule of thumb in creating a relaxing space would be to prioritize ergonomics and comfort. When it comes to purchasing furniture, everything should be gauged not only through aesthetics but though the level of comfort it provides. When it comes to color, basic psychology says that nature relaxes a person’s mind. So it would be wise to use science to our advantage: choose colors that would remind you of the mountains like earth tones in the more public areas of the house such as the living room or the veranda. Blues and grays reminiscent of the sea would be ideal in creating a restful bedroom. Catching the sunrise through yellows and reds would also be a good idea to provide a subtle punch of color. Layering colors and adding accents would be a great idea to provide aesthetic depth. A relaxing space would be an area wherein you could move freely and comfortably. Freeing the space from unnecessary clutter provides ease in movement and encourages daily activities without restraint. Adding artworks would also be great in creating a truly relaxing area.

Part of a designer’s goal when working on any interior is to achieve warmth, so that at the end of the day, our clients want to stay in their homes more because of the relaxing spaces we have created. I always consider lighting as an important detail. Setting up different kinds of lighting (aside from your main source of light) such as cove lighting and accent lighting can make a big difference. Providing different intensities of brightness by installing dimmers will help set the mood as well. Carefully balancing your interior design will help you create a cozy interior. Balance and moderation is the key. Combine textures and play with finishes – a hard, rough wall with wood or stone cladding can be complemented by fully upholstered furniture such as a plush sofa topped with fluffy throw pillows and luxurious coverings. On the other hand, a wall with patterned wallpaper for added texture would look well against a simple wooden bed frame. Layering it with the right amount of accessories will complete the look. Any color can create a relaxing atmosphere, but it is the blending of colors, materials, textures and patterns that needs careful thought. Use neutral shades for the major areas of a house such as walls, ceilings and its furniture. Add accent colors in the accessories such as throw pillows, linens and curtains. Having full curtains can successfully create comfy spaces. Adding piped in music to be played around the house adds that extra special touch as well. Bedrooms, living areas and family rooms are usually the rooms that call for a cozy mood. However, it is best to make sure every part of the house adapts a restful ambience. Concentrate on designing and creating a lifestyle that is comfortable for all the people living in it. Any designer can create an ideal cozy space but the true warmth of a home comes from its dwellers.

ONE WITH NATURE Bring the outdoors in as you decorate your bathroom with bamboo accents and fresh palm leaves. Feel as if you are communing with nature and install a rain showerhead that will add to the overall experience. Use earthy colors for your towels and natural materials for your other bathroom accessories to enhance and complete the natural yet refined look.

DECORATE

IN BLACK AND WHITE Keep things simple in the bedroom and decorate in a classic black and white scheme. Minimizing bold colors can help in creating a more restful atmosphere. Add visual interest by playing with the shapes and forms of your furniture and add pieces of dĂŠcor in muted colors to break the monotony. Combine with some metallic finishes for an added visual appeal while maintaining the minimalist look of the space.

hen designing a home, one of the trickiest clients you can ever have is a relative. The pressure lies in the fact that you want to please both a client and a family member. For interior designer Tet Alano, the pressure was greater because she was not only tasked to create the interiors of her uncle’s house, but its architecture as well. “My uncle sort of tested me to see my work in our previous projects,” the designer shares. When the clients saw her successfully completed projects, and knowing her taste in design and work ethic, the designer was given all the artistic license for her uncle’s home. From the house’s exterior to the rooms of the children, the designer trusted her gut and used her familiarity of the clients to her advantage. “The only thing they asked for was a hotel-like feel,” the designer explains. Standing tall and proud in a subdivision in Pampanga, the house’s modern architecture pops out from its neighbors. The interiors do not fall short of the standard the exteriors have set – simple, classy and modern, but still with the warmth and comfort of a family home.

The living room exudes grace and class with the stark contrast of black leather and warm woods.

79

“My uncle was also very hands on, shares the designer on her client, who was the one who sourced for the Narra flooring in the dining room.

The simplicity of the guest bedroom’s design is made up for in the lush fabrics that adorn the bed. Below: The powder room will leave you in awe with its very cool and modern look.

“If you see the perspectives we presented, there was probably a five percent alteration – and it even came from me because I found something better,” the designer expounds. From the brainstorming to the overall execution, Alano is organized and very hands on with all her projects, making sure that the client can visualize the space before starting on anything – even if it means a lot of editing. The designer explains that this process not only saves up on time and resources, but it also lessens the stress for both client and designer. It also ensures that the end design is exactly how they want it. The entire first floor is an eclectic mix of carefully selected furniture pieces. The foyer, a lofty space with a grand piano next to the staircase, an Eames chair just beside it, gives you a sense of airiness that translates all throughout the home. The living and dining rooms also look picture-perfect, with the well put-together furniture pieces and accessories. With a beautiful pool in the heart of the backyard, the home definitely gives off a warm, relaxing atmosphere.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are done in the same meticulous manner as the public areas. All the rooms are designed to give off a friendly air while maintaining a certain luxurious hotel feel. The bathrooms are also done with as much attention to detail – especially the ground floor powder room done in mesmerizing floor to ceiling mosaic tiles! Alano shares that it means so much to her when clients retain what she has done, even years after the home has been turned over. “It makes me think that they appreciate what I was able to do for them,” the designer smiles. Behind all the project management, strict deadlines, organizing suppliers, and client expectations, interior design and architecture mean much more to Alano. “It’s not just a job. You’re also an artist,” smiles the designer who was able to give her uncle/client the house their dreams.

long the shores of a stunning beach cove stands a charming structure of three ‘villas’ surrounding a gorgeous infinity pool, with a garden landscaped with immaculate stone paths and an abundance of greenery. This delightful private beach house belongs to a family of five who like to spend their long weekends and vacations hanging out by their pool, eating and sharing stories with one another. “I can say that this is really my dream beach house,” the owner says of their new beach home with fondness. It is the product of her collaboration with interior designer Marissa Jerome and Two Heads owner Juvy Mercado. Inspired by resorts and beach houses the family has visited here and abroad, the structure was the combination of all the owner’s favourite elements and features. The structure breaks off into three separate ‘villas’; the first, housing the living room, the second, the dining room and kitchen, and finally the third, located in the center, all the bedrooms of the family. All three structures have sliding glass doors that open outside, giving the family access to the infinity pool from whichever ‘villa’ they are in.

Upon stepping inside the incredible wooden entry doors, a wall of gleaming capiz shells greets you, with a huge jar fountain overflowing with water in front of it. Behind it is the living room, the owner’s personal favourite area in the house. With couches upholstered in turquoise and decorative accessories that range from starfish to sea turtles, the living room definitely reminds one of the sea. The entire house shares the colourful whimsical look of the living room – from the fabrics of the furniture to the decorative accessories, this home takes the term ‘beach house’ very seriously. The dining room shares the same color scheme as the living room, with the dining set done in blues, complementing the infinity pool right outside it. The kitchen is tastefully done in a pale wood finish, harmonizing with the enormous dining table done in solid wood. The bedrooms are designed and decorated not only to suit their users’ personalities, but to advocate Filipino products and materials as well. Interior designer Marissa Jerome supports local products as much as she can, and teamed up with Two Heads in producing most of the furniture in the house. Each bedroom boasts of customized recycled wood headboards, with the crown jewel being that of the master bedroom. The combination of ipil, guijo, yakal and kamagong woods resulted in a dramatic backdrop fitting for the masters of the house. Each room also has its own bathroom, done with as much attention to detail as everything in the house. For the owner, designer and supplier trio, this relaxing getaway, their shared masterpiece, is “a beach house that has the resort feel, but with all the comforts of a city home.”

hen looking for a safe recluse to relax and unwind, impeccable design is key – and you can expect nothing less from fashion designer Jun Escario and interior designer Simon Miles’ vacation spot in Bohol. Nestled in the deep, quiet and secure neighborhood in Panglao is a humble bungalow that was intended to be an out-of-town party place. However, it is now also being conveniently used as a rest house. The quaint little abode was a renovation project led by the designer tandem, and until today, it continues to be an ongoing commitment, as it gets redesigned and expanded for its owners and their guests to experience its full benefits. While the house is conveniently just a five-minute walk away from the beautiful Alona beach, what’s inside may be enough to make anyone just want to stay in. The neighborhood is inviting

and peaceful, the sight and the views are a beauty to behold, and the ambience is always warm and welcoming – all thanks to good design. Full-height glass sliding doors break the barriers of the walls to the outside world, making way for everyday views of the blooming garden. The spacious living room can be connected to the outdoors as well, for easy access to the huge pool and covered terrace. “It’s become a house for special occasions, too,” reveals Escario. When the owners are in the mood for a private retreat, they withdraw into the Zen-inspired master bedroom. Minimalist with just a hint of color through its accent wall, the bedroom overlooks the pool and creates a relaxing, serene atmosphere. The lot’s sandy beach courtyard that connects to the bedroom completes the modern beach house look and feel of the home.

oving to a new house is a wonderful opportunity for every homeowner to create the idea of their perfect home. To be able to collaborate with your architect and interior designer, to customize spaces to your needs, and to carefully and meticulously select the right furniture, accessories and artwork are just some of the many things in the list of anyone looking to build a new home. To build their dream place – such was the desire of this family as they moved from their Mediterranean-inspired house in Antipolo to their more contemporary designed home in the heart of the city. “We wanted to correct the mistakes we made with the first house,” shares the owner.

Such was the idea as they collaborated with Architect Romeo P. Quinio and Interior Designer Paolo del Rosario. The house was designed with care, considering natural elements like the orientation of both the sun and wind, to effectively bring the outdoors in. Natural light flows in throughout the house, with its full height glass windows, making the Balinese, Zen and Tibetan inspired home come to life. The living room is a sight to behold, with its high ceilings and well-curated furniture pieces. “We played up on the very tall ceilings by choosing pieces that would help draw your eye upward, as they were large or tall pieces themselves,” shares Interior Designer Paolo del Rosario.

The play of scale establishes grandeur as one takes in the richness of the items and finishes in the living room – Kenneth Cobonpue chairs, a Vito Selma coffee table, enormous old Muslim drums beautifully textured and detailed, and an abundance of fresh greenery. The real focal point of the space, however, is the Dino Gabito art piece that hangs high above the area, representing the members of the family. A kamagong and narra dining table by Osmundo “Omeng” Esguerra gracefully sits in the dining room, with elegant moss green chairs around it. The bolder tones of the window treatments add depth and drama, complementing the cognac Murano glass chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Artworks by HR Ocampo and Arturo Luz grace the dining room, making one feel as if dining with the masters. Across the dining room is the kitchen, with its cabinets done in black, along with an island counter with a breakfast nook done in elegant kamagong wood. The Lucite chairs paired with the dark wood provide a beautiful contrast and a touch of elegance in the otherwise monochromatic space. The master bedroom was created with the warmth and comfort of resort villas in mind. The windows pique interest, making use of shutters as opposed to the frameless glass windows in the other areas. A magnificent backdrop of fabric panels encased in a wooden frame serves as a fantastic backdrop to the bed, and serves to highlight the focal point of the room. Rich fabrics with intricate patterns adorn the bed, while color is infused in the decorative accessories and other furnishings. A grand walk-in closet adjoins the space, with mirrored doors and a great marble top island, full of drawers to house the owners’ belongings.

“This is where I read, take my afternoon naps, and spend my quiet time with the Lord,” shares the lady of the house, who considers the marvellous area as her own personal sanctuary. Clean lines and white furniture make the room neat and crisp, while still remaining fresh and relaxing. A powder room in the game area boasts of a back-lit yellow onyx sink and mirrors that extend to the ceiling, all while decorated with sculptures and paintings by renowned Filipino artists. The pool and outdoor lounging area is surrounded by lush landscapes, adding to the resort feel of the house, with the alfresco area flowing smoothly and cohesively into the interiors. The grandeur of this tropically designed home is balanced by the warmth of the interiors, and the well thought-of and carefully selected furnishings and artworks. Their move back to the metropolis was indeed a welcome change for the family – the fast-paced city life must not even matter when you go home to a house that perfectly reflects resort living.

CREATIVE SPACE

Simply Chic

The work space of fashion designer Andrea Tetangco reflects her style and personality Interviewed by ANDREA ARINES | Photographed by FLOYD JHOCSON OF STUDIO 100 AND LANz ENTERINA

Andrea Tetangco’s newly renovated atelier is as chic and stylish as the designer herself

1. How would you describe your workspace? My workspace is very chic and minimal. This is my first office, and I just renovated it last year. I got an interior designer and my only requirement is that I want a clean and minimalist space.

2. What do you love most about your workspace? Everything! I handpicked every detail of it. Even the walls, we worked together on that. Since I’m also a designer, all of the details, kasama talaga ako d’yan. Even some of the chairs I designed on my own.

3. Do you have a daily ritual before starting your workday? I wake up at 7am and have some quiet time before I take my breakfast and then I go to work. My schedule is very erratic. Either I go to the atelier or to my suppliers and clients. If there are no meetings in the morning, I do my emails after my morning ritual. I also go to the gym after work.

4. Are you more productive in the morning or evening? In the morning I’m obliged to be productive, but I am more creative in the evening. I guess ‘pag designer gano’n talaga, sa gabi gumagana ang isip. I can design more at night, and sometimes I can’t sleep anymore when there’s so much going on even past midnight. My brain is really more productive at night.

80

“This area features a platform and a mirror where my clients get to check the gowns I design for them,” Andrea shares. Bottom: Andrea’s neutral colored gowns with embroidered details and unique cuts are reflective of her main inspirations – women’s fashion and interior details.

Andrea’s books and fashion creations are neatly lined-up in a corner of her atelier

5. Which object in your office are you most sentimental about? The chairs that my sister and I designed.

6. What are the three things you must have while working? Scent. I want to have a good scent in my area while I work. Second is coffee, and third is my laptop and magazines as my references. Pen and paper are givens. These are all the things that I need because I’m very minimalist. I don’t even have sounds and I really clear my table. I like to isolate myself when working.

7. Where do you get inspiration from? I get inspiration from my travels. Mostly from women, their needs and behaviours. I get ideas from interiors as well. High ceilings, carvings – I am very keen on details and you can’t just see those details from a fashion show or a runway. You get very intricate details from interiors, especially when you visit special places like castles and you really get inspired. It’s easy to make a gown but the details are the challenging part of it.

8. What is your work mantra? You really have to take a risk and have faith because being in fashion is really a tough job – it’s not all glam. The clothes are glamorous, but behind it, it’s business. At the end of the day, what’s important is your creativity and the lasting relationships that you form with your clients.

Mind Your Mattress Avoid bad habits that shorten mattress life Written by RAZEL ESTRELLA | Photos courtesy of guS*

L

et’s face it – we are married to our beds. We can’t wait to go home to it and we can’t seem to leave it in the mornings, despite our alarm clocks saying we have to get on our feet. That said, we do not want to take our beloved beds for granted. However, you might be unconsciously guilty of some bad habits that can shorten the life of your mattress. If you’re guilty of one, or all of these, then it might be time to give your mattress and your bed a little more love that it deserves. 1. Forgoing the boxspring A boxspring serves as a cushion that absorbs the pressure that the mattress carries. It supports the mattress to prevent sagging and keep its ideal shape, to keep your body in good posture while sleeping. 2. Sitting on the edge of the bed for an extended period Our beds are for sleeping and not for sitting down for a reason. Maintaining the level surface of the mattress is paramount because it makes for a sounder, healthier sleep. It is also advisable that you rotate and flip the mattress every quarter to distribute wear and tear. 3. Leaving it out during vacuum time Just because we don’t see any dirt on it, doesn’t mean there’s none. Dust mites and bed bugs are quite tiny and might be making a home out of

mattresses and pillows if these are not regularly cleaned. Vacuuming with a hose attachment every month should do the job. For an extra dose of TLC, there are mattress protectors available in the market that not only shield the mattress from those mites and bugs, but also protect it from accidental spills, and prevent liquids from seeping in. 4. Jumping on the bed While fun, and undeniably great for bonding with kids, mattresses can only take so much beating. Jumping on the bed is one of the easiest ways to shorten mattress life. 5. Sleeping with wet hair Never mind that myth about sleeping with wet hair. The rule of thumb for any piece of upholstery is to avoid getting it wet. The moisture can damage the mattress’ materials and even worse, it can cause fungus buildup. 6. Sleeping with Fluffy It is common to have our beloved pets share our beds as we catch some z’s. However, as cute and as cuddly as they may be, our pets carry allergens, through the shedding of their fur, and their skin flakes can attract dust mites.

The interiors of Abe’s Farm evoke traditional Filipino charm, with rustic wood interiors and furniture, a warm and homey welcome for the weary (and hungry) traveler who’s entered its doors.

The journey to Abe’s Farm may be long and arduous for the city dweller,

but you instantly feel your stresses melt away the moment you step into the quaint and charming bahay kubo that houses the restaurant. Originally built as a rest house for the late Larry J. Cruz (of LJC Group of Restaurants, which include the likes of Café Adriatico in its roster) and his family, the house was constructed at a leisurely pace, dictated by the exacting standards and whims of its imaginative owner. Ernie Aguilar, the owner’s cousin, boasts that most of the restaurant’s displays came from old structures, with some artifacts from Bali, Indonesia, and even bricks from an old church. Indeed, the restaurant houses a plethora of memorabilia, art and other artifacts collected from the Philippines and around the world, a collection loosely curated by the owner and his architect Agustin Goy. The restaurant also has paintings by former ambassador Emilio Aguilar Cruz, the owner’s father and the restaurant’s namesake. (The ambassador would include abe, the Kapampangan word for ‘friend’, whenever he would sign his writings and paintings.)

A notable feature of the restaurant and a favorite of its patrons is its bangguerahan, a slatted bamboo dish drying area in the kitchen, similar to what can be found in a traditional bahay kubo. The restaurant’s name rings a bell to food aficionados, since Abe’s Farm is part of the Abe family of restaurants in Manila. Whilst it shares some of its signature dishes with its Manila counterpart, Abe’s Farm serves them with a distinct Kapampangan touch. This is felt from the restaurant’s rustic ambiance, to the food that excites and satisfies even the most discerning taste buds, prepared with only the freshest ingredients sourced locally. The Binukadkad na Pla-Pla and the Knockout Knuckles are some of its bestsellers. “Gusto talaga namin maging isang destination,’ says Ernie, “Hindi tulad sa isang typical restaurant, parang eat and run eh. We want this to be a place where you can be lazy. Where you can relax and unwind.” If one desires a culinary escape and a place of relaxation, far from the reaches of the busy city, then the journey is well worth taking to Abe’s Farm - a nirvana amidst the embrace of nature.

Even the entry corridor to the restrooms were given lavish attention by owner Larry J. Cruz in his quest to build his dream vacation home. Bottom: The Knockout Knuckles (P595) was a hands down favorite. Don’t bother with utensils and eat away with your fingers and savor the flavors.

The restaurant’s famous bangguerahan.

Relish the crispiness of the Binukadkad na Pla-Pla (P395). Eat it like the locals by mixing the fish and the accompanying balo balo (fermented rice with shrimp), and wrapping it with mustasa leaves.

The delightfully filling Bamboo Rice (P250) is a healthy mix of mountain rice, shrimps, wood ear mushrooms and bamboo shoots, steamed and served within a bamboo shell.

Paco Fern & Tomato Salad (P155) is a refreshing appetizer served with tomatoes and salted eggs, finished with a light dressing

Abe’s Farm incorporates various dining setups within ‘rooms’ , ready to serve events or occasions of any type.

Abe’s Farm is located at Barangay Ayala in Magalang, Pampanga. They are open daily except Tuesdays, for lunch, merienda and dinner from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Contact them through (0917) 808-5187 or visit abesfarm.com.ph

BERNA PEREZ Behind the pretty texts and typefaces

“Hand-lettering was my first love,” the artist shares.

Little did Berna Perez (more commonly known as @forevernostalgia) know that her writing career would start when she was assigned as her high school class’ secretary. Back then, she would be asked to write the teacher’s notes on the board while the rest of the class followed her lead. From there, she started doodling and mixing art and letters together which were very useful in beautifying her school projects. “[The] pen and paper were my friends ever since,” she adds. With the boom of Instagram, Berna immediately created an account to share some of her work with the world. It was there that she discovered the concept of modern calligraphy. “I followed people whose interest was more on penmanship and modern calligraphy and I was in awe of how beautiful it looked. That sparked my love for calligraphy and I bought my first tools even if I had no idea how to use them,” she explains. Since calligraphy wasn’t as popular back then, looking for the right materials (such as nibs, brush pens, inks, pigments, etc.) was like a treasure hunt. Today, the local industry has caught up - more calligraphers are popping up online. “I met six awesome ladies over on Instagram and we started

a calligraphy support group we call La Bella Scrittura. We share what we knew about the pointed pen and encouraged each other to practice,” Berna shares. Wanting to pass on to others what they have learned collectively as a group, the ladies of La Bella Scrittura teach calligraphy to those who are eager to learn more about it. “For me, it is a rewarding experience. It continues to be a learning process and that’s what I always tell my students. You won’t only learn from other people, you also learn from what you create,” shares the calligrapher. Berna is proud to say that she is self-taught. Practicing, matching and playing around with different techniques and materials – calligraphy is part of her lifestyle. Berna’s spare time involves what she calls “inky hands and messy desks”. With the help of technology, Berna learned how to digitize some of her hand-drawn works to give it a different effect. While all calligraphers have their own specializations, Berna leans more towards calligraphy with hair-thin tails. What started out as a passion project is now a freelance sidejob for Berna. Brands, businesses and other clients contact her for their creative materials. Truly, her script writing from high school has leveled-up ten fold.

“My daily inspirations are the experiences I encounter. I write my feelings out and find a quote from books, movies or lyrics that reflect my mood. I usually share motivational quotes because I, too, have daily challenges and calligraphy is a way for me to share words that may help one capture the beauty of being positive in life.”

“The pen and paper were my friends ever since” says Berna Perez

FENG SHUI

Rest and Recharge Take advantage of Ghost month to refocus, realign, and ultimately, relax. Written by PATTI SUNIO Illustration by ELECTROLYCHEE STUDIO

A

ugust, being the month widely known in Feng Shui as Ghost month, is when all business, contracts, and legal pursuits are halted. As much as possible, any form of transaction is waited out until the following month. While Feng Shui believes for this to be the time when the ghosts are out to cause trouble or harm, as per Feng Shui expert Master Hanz Cua, it’s also an opportunity for all of us to take the time to rest, relax, and reassess priorities. If you have plans of setting up a business, or signing a contract, it’s advised that you do so post-Ghost month. Instead, use this month to think about it well and reevaluate. There is no harm in rethinking your plans twice, thrice, or as much as required. You need not go far or spend much to take that break. Going through major travels should also be avoided during Ghost month. Turn your house into the ideal sanctuary where you can freely dwell in your thoughts, recharge your energy, and prepare for whatever is coming. It is advised that you make yourself attuned to your home’s surroundings, to its Feng Shui. It’s the perfect time to encourage yourself, to see if you like the energy, and how you can make your home a more pleasant place to be. This year, Ghost month will begin on the 3rd and will end on the 31st of August. The peak date will be on the 17th of the month.

100

Rat Ghost month is about avoiding financial transactions at all costs. Business will run smoothly, but now’s not the time to be generous. Avoid lending money. Employees will yield good results, but might be prone to office gossip. Also be wary of bone-related health concerns.

Ox More serious problems may arise from the minute issues you’ve ignored before. Get to the bottom of everything to make sure you’ve covered all bases. Avoid renovation and construction this month. No partying, loud music, or extreme activity. You may experience encounters with unexplained spirits, so wear black crystal onyx for protection.

tigeR Avoid visiting negative Yin places like the hospital, the cemetery, or a wake. Offer a prayer or a candle to keep yourself guarded. Try to go to bed earlier, no more night swimming or coming home late this ghost month. Delay any plans of opening a business or moving into a new home.

Rabbit Wealth luck will prosper for Rabbits this month. It’s agreeable to sign deals with clients, but do so in the eastern sector of any establishment. August will be the start of accumulating wealth, so just continue what you’re doing and save your earnings wisely.

DRagOn It’ll be a victorious month for Dragons—you’ll be number one in your team! Put in the extra effort in whatever you do. You can also put in a water fountain in the south east portion of your home to nurture your victory luck. Keep up the good work!

Snake

HORSe Friends around you will be in need when it comes to resolving problems. Remember to be good to others and not be arrogant. You will find success in business. Enhance your luck with a bright light in the southern sector of your workplace, and a wealth inviting cat for businesses.

SHeep All your hard work will finally pay off this month! Wealth and career will both be properly compensated. It’s time to take extra care of your health, too, by eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. Delay any plans of starting a new business this ghost month.

MOnkey It will be harvesting month for you this August. You can finally reap what you’ve invested, or your share in commission. However, stress from work and other issues may lead to health problems, so it’s wise to pay attention to that early on.

ROOSteR Love and romance should be your top priority this month. Allow yourself to go out and meet new people, socialize and mingle with old and new friends. On the professional side, keep safe from arguments or troubles that may lead to legal cases.

DOg You may be prone to violence and conflict this ghost month. Small misunderstandings may lead to serious arguments. Avoid road rage, or clashing with a boss or client.

bOaR You can look forward to career advancement or wealth gain this month. However, manage your expectations well so that it will not lead to any trouble or problems.

Facing competition, you’ll emerge the winner as long as you stay strong and focused. Practice will also be your key to success. Keep yourself determined, so that any small issue will be easily resolved.
