he month of august is always special for Indonesia Tatler, as we celebrate the country’s Independence Day, which falls on August 17. To commemorate this special event, we are featuring President Joko Widodo on our cover this month to accompany a feature that focuses on some of the positive achievements his government has achieved so far—achievements that have and will better the lives of all citizens, and which we should all be proud of and thankful for. In keeping with this spirit of national pride, we also focus on three politicians who have achieved outstanding results in their respective cities, including the governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama; the governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo; and the mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil. Meanwhile, in our Faces section, we talk to Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, CEO of Bank Mandiri, who shares with us his life story and his plans for the bank, plus the renowned socialite Chiang Yu Lan, who tells us about her family and her passion for fashion.
Speaking of fashion, and also of beauty, in our Style section we share with you some handy tips and tricks on how to look and feel awesome as we move into the third quarter of the year. Food lovers aren’t left out either: Cindy Angelina and her best friend Kezia Toemion indulge at fine and fabulous French cuisine at AMUZ Gourmet Restaurant. Last but not least, for truly inspiring luxury holiday ideas, check out our Life section for details of the latest Royal Caribbean cruise liner Harmony of the Seas—the biggest cruiser in the world—and intimate encounters with whale sharks and other exotic wildlife on the wonderful Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia. Happy reading and happy anniversary Indonesia!

In 2015, Club 21 Jakarta, together with Plaza Indonesia and Indonesia Tatler, initiated “Style It Forward”: a second-hand branded-items sale where profits are donated for the betterment of children living in orphanages, slum areas and government flats. This year, Club 21 Jakarta is teaming up with six non-profit organisations, including Yayasan Pansophia Indonesia, United Way Yayasan Mitra
Mandiri Indonesia, Gift to Kiara, Love Pink, Happy Hearts Fund Indonesia and 3 Little Angels. After last year’s success, this year, the event will be held at AW Kitchen in Plaza Indonesia from September 2-4. Club 21 expects to collect around 4,000 items, which will then be put up for sale at prices up to Rp 8 million per piece during the bazaar. All the proceeds from the sales— expected to be around Rp 1 billion this year— will be donated to charity. Last year, around a thousand visitors turned up to the threeday bazaar. This year, twice that number is expected.

He also spent Hari Raya in Jakarta because, “From what I’ve heard from colleagues, the streets of Jakarta are relatively empty and you can go anywhere easily.”

The inauguration of the new Terminal 3 Ultimate at Soekarno-Hatta Airport means putting passengers first he inauguration of terminal 3 Ultimate, the new terminal at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, has been delayed for additional safety checks. The Transportation Ministry was not satisfied with the air traffic control mobile tower as it could block the view of the apron. Terminal 3 Ultimate is aimed at adding capacity to the airport and also as a transit
hub for international travellers similar to Singapore’s Changi Airport. The US$500m terminal is slated to have a capacity of 15 million passengers after phase one is complete and 25 million passengers upon completion in 2017. The ministry has stressed that Terminal 3 Ultimate will operate only when it meets stringent requirements. “The bottom line is, we give the green light when it is 100 per cent ready,” said Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan on June 25.

Banking on Success
PHOTOGRAPHY: HERI B HERYANTO
It was his persistence, determination and commitment that earned him the position of CEO at Indonesia’s largest bank. The sprightly Kartika Wirjoatmodjo sits down to tell us about his life, the challenges he has faced and his visions for the future. Novranto Huntua and Kevin Sjahrial discover omposed, astute and commanding. These are the first words that come to mind when meeting Kartika Wirjoatmodjo. Born in Surabaya in July 1971, the affable and softspoken Kartika has an immense amount of appreciation and passion for his work. “To always give it your all,” is the principle behind Wijoatmodjo’s work ethic. Backed by credibility, high levels of professionalism and his expertise garnered from years of experience, Wirjoatmodjo was promoted to CEO of Bank Mandiri, the biggest bank in Indonesia with assets worth more than Rp 910 trillion, and was the bank’s youngest-ever CEO at 43. Tiko—the nickname he is widely known by—started working in the finance and banking industry in 1995. However, throughout that time, he never sought out a specific career path. “Regardless of what I am working on, my main goal is to be able to do my utmost best for the nation and the people,” he tells us. Wirjoatmodjo strongly believes in being upstanding, and working diligently with dedication and commitment are the keys to advancing one’s career. He graduated from the University of Indonesia, majoring in economics and accounting, then earned his Master’s degree at the Erasmus University Rotterdam School of Management and rose to prominence at blistering speed. His illustrious career includes being a tax consultant and accountant at RSM AAJ Associates; a credit analyst at the
indonesia tatler . august 2016
Industrial Bank of Japan; a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers; and then working with the Boston Consulting Group. It was only in 2003 that saw him return to Indonesia to join Bank Mandiri. And so, in less than a decade, Wirjoatmodjo rose through the ranks and was promoted to CEO of the Indonesian Finance infrastructure division. His exceptional abilities at the bank caught the attention of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who assigned Wirjoatmodjo as the CEO of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation. And in March 2016, his career hit its highest peak yet: he was promoted to CEO of Bank Mandiri. “It was an absolute honour to be promoted to CEO. That said, the promotion, more than anything else, also presents great challenges, among which is to take the Bank Mandiri name to even greater heights in both local and regional terms,” Wirjoatmodjo says. With that vision in mind, it is no surprise that Wirjoatmodjo’s plan is to first expand the bank’s market penetration to Malaysia and Singapore. His plan of action is to open new branch offices in the region and to enhance the utility of these branches. “There is a sense of pride that I get when I visit an overseas branch and see for myself the operations,” he tells us. Wirjoatmodjo is constantly taking steps to turn his vision into a reality. In-depth research and understanding the challenges faced by the banking industry are essential to his plan. Wirjoatmodjo, who counts Nelson Mandela among his biggest inspirations, notes that the Indonesian economy experiences a cyclical pattern that spans around eight years.
“Regardless of what I am working on, my main goal is to be able to do my utmost best for the nation and the people”

The economic downturn of 1998 was met with growth in 2006, followed by another downturn in 2014. The Indonesian economy is currently approaching the end of another downturn—as seen in the aftermath of 2013, prices of commodities such as coal saw a decrease as the global economy slowed down. But even in times of economic downturn, Wirjoatmodjo says that we have to remain positive. Indonesia is one of the few nations that has managed to exceed the forecasted global economy growth rate. The IMF forecasted a growth rate of 3.2 per cent yearon-year, while the Indonesian economy saw growth of 4.92 per cent in the first quarter of 2016. “The growth of the Indonesian economy, while slower than it has been, is still moving at a better rate than that of other countries like Brazil. We have to be optimistic and look forward, and spend more of our time
36
and energy on creating breakthroughs for ourselves and the nation,” says Wirjoatmodjo, who is a father of two girls. He is confident that Indonesia’s economy will bounce back in 2017. Bank Mandiri, under his leadership, will continue to improve its online services in anticipation of this resurgence. “We are always looking to innovate,” he says. “We have to get the best out of our digital technology and human resources. I hope that in the next one to two years, Bank Mandiri will be at the forefront of online banking services.” Kartika Wirjoatmodjo is a man who believes in being bold in the face of adversity; in always using a bit of “elbow grease”; and is constantly looking to better himself. He is determined to uphold Bank Mandiri’s reputation as the largest, most technologically advanced and trustworthy bank in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. indonesia tatler . august 2016

Dancing Queen
PHOTOGRAPHY: HERI B. HERYANTO; MAKE-UP: RICHARD THEO, HAIR: ALDO WINATA, WARDROBE: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Raised in Taipei and currently dividing her time between Jakarta and Singapore, Taiwanese socialite Chiang Yu Lan shares her story with Maina A. Harjani oised in a cropped dress and sneakers, the ever-youthful Chiang Yu Lan waltzes her way into the grandeur of the Majapahit Suite at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta. As a mother of four grown-up girls and a grandmother to little Liam, Chiang is delighted to share with Indonesia Tatler some of her life tips, plus her passion for fashion, the arts and ballroom dancing. Being surrounded by her three sisters, two brothers and parents while living in Taipei, Chiang Yu Lan has always maintained a close relationship with her immediate kin. Two of her own girls are married and live in Jakarta, while her twin girls have just recently graduated with MBA degrees from Switzerland. “I have a 2-year-old grandson who is the apple of everyone’s eye,” she adds. “The whole family showers him with love and attention, hoping he will grow up to be a caring and kind individual.” Chiang moved to Jakarta after marriage and she admits it was a huge transition as far as language, culture, food and lifestyle are concerned. However, she loves the fact that Indonesia is a country filled with rich heritage and resources and that it is one of the most exciting emerging economies in the world. She also goes on to say that Indonesia is known for its beautiful islands, beaches and majestic volcanoes and that
staying in Jakarta reminds her of Taipei, where the locals are warm, kind-hearted and place a great emphasis on family values. “That said, living in Singapore also has its pros,” she says. “It has been transformed into a beautiful garden city with high standards of living, education, cleanliness, efficiency, and law and order. Even though there are many different ethnicities in Singapore, they are all able to live in harmony,” says the lovely lady who recently moved into a beautiful home in Sentosa Cove. Chiang Yu Lan is a big believer in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating well. She is also a keen yoga fan who lives by the motto of having the correct attitude towards life and a passion for constant learning. On this note, she originally took up ballroom dancing as a hobby, although it later burgeoned into a burning passion after she saw a competition in Singapore. The participants’ elegance and poise, together with the classical music they swayed to, were inspirational to her. And so it was that Chiang eventually secured international championship titles at The Hour Glass Open Asian Open Dance Championship 2008, the 15th Penang International Ballroom Dancing Championship 2008 and the 2012 US Open to the World Pro/Am Ballroom Scholarship. “Ballroom dancing has taught me qualities such as perseverance and grace. With hard work and determination, nothing is impossible.

And besides the skills and techniques, ballroom dancing also embodies social etiquettes,” she says. With an eye for the visual arts, Chiang is also a collector of watercolour paintings featuring Chinese landscapes, and she shares with Indonesia Tatler some of her favourite artists: Lee Man Fong, Wu Guanzhong and Qi Baishi. Other than the arts, she is also keen on fashion and believes that one must dress accordingly to one’s age and status. “We should not follow fashion blindly, but must find a style that suits our personality and body type,” she explains. “A few of my favourite brands are Chanel, Dior, Dolce
40
& Gabbana, Balmain and Fendi; I prefer clothes that are elegant and sexy.” During the photoshoot with Indonesia Tatler, Chiang looked elegant in her two dresses from Alexander McQueen. To end our time together, we asked Chiang to share some of her personal tips for keeping fit and in shape. “I work out regularly and eat wisely,” she told us. “I also avoid wheat and grains, and consume a lot of vegetables and fruit. I drink plenty of water to hydrate myself and I use a daily facial mask to keep my face supple. Having sufficient sleep and avoiding the sun and alcohol are also some of my tips for a healthier lifestyle.” indonesia tatler . august 2016

The LX series has long been the market leader in the class of luxury SUVs and the all-new third generation LX 570 is no exception. The interior of the LX 570 is engineered for ultimate comfort. The cabin is adorned with soft genuine leather upholstery, a handsome wood trim and excellent fit-to-finish. Long journeys and congested traffic have also become a lot more enjoyable: the interior of the LX 570 is fitted with the latest technology including a full-colour heads-up display on the windshield, which evokes images of the future. The largest monitor in its class thus far also provides the driver with ease of operation. Meanwhile, the revamped exterior of the LX 570 is sure to turn heads. The large frame manages to stay sleek while not being too boxy. The brand-new, larger Lexus spindle grille and sleek new LED headlights create an imposing presence. Twenty-one inch
wheels complete the towering profile of the LX 570, as the largest in its class. Safety is another signature of Lexus’s design and manufacture. The frame of the LX 570 is built with a high-tensile steel chassis, making it a very rugged and durable vehicle. With the LX 570, the transition from bustling metropolitan traffic to rough off-road terrains is effortless. From black-tie premieres to off-road vistas, the LX 570’s powerful 5.7 litre V8 engine will conquer them all. g et d ow n on k ni t Knitwear as party-wear? The idea’s got us feeling all warm and fuzzy In an age of fashion where nigh on anything goes, it can be real tricky to find ways of poking one’s sartorial head above the parapet. To find ways of dressing that are more zut alors! than crashing bore. The answer? I say take your ribs and cables— hell, even Fair Isles— and splice those naughty knits into your sassiest of day and dance-wear. The key to success with this look, so deftly paraded on the runway at Miu Miu, is to inject the woolly wonder where least expected. Bit nippy at the gala dinner? Not this time buddy, I’ve got my chunky woollen scarf! What’s that under my minidress? Oh, just some long thick grey woollen socks pulled up to the knee. What of it? This look, after all, is more about the element of surprise than perfect temperature control and, honestly, nothing says party quite like some teeny tiny knitted knickerbockers.

And autumn, my friends, is going to be positively awash with these things! So whether you channel Björn Borg in Neil Barrett’s sporty versions, slink around in one of the altogether more flamboyant chinoiserie embroidered velvet numbers offered by Gucci or even perhaps feel man enough to tackle Burberry’s fully sequinned number, which just begs to dominate a dodgy disco dancefloor somewhere—wear it with rudeboy flair. Zipper up to the chin under a coat or down to expose a verging-on-inappropriate amount of chest hair...and preferably a chain. The truly badass brave the matching bottoms. Ah, the perils of men’s swimwear. From the totally not okay “budgie smuggler” Speedo variety to those stylish but unoriginal Vilebrequins (and a whole host of too short, too tight and too sportswear-y numbers in between), bossing the beachwear situ can be fraught. But fear not. Mazu Swimwear founder Adam Raby is here to solve your bathing woes. “I saw a gap in the market for luxury, Asian-inspired men’s swimwear,” says Raby, whose collection of beautifully designed trunks pays homage to Hong Kong’s rich maritime history (Mazu is the name of the goddess of seafarers) by incorporating traditional colours and local motifs. The brand also recently teamed up with the Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society to create a limited edition run of shorts featuring the region’s native pink dolphins, with a percentage of sales going towards helping save the dwindling pink dolphin population in the Pearl River Delta. Each pair of trunks comes with its own cotton canvas bag—handy for stashing ones sunglasses, phone and wallet—and the new season’s collection is now available in children’s sizes (for ages 3 to 10). Just think of all the father-and-son beach Insta-potential.

Renaissance Man
An eclectic design in its new collection and why Gucci’s reinvention by Alessandro Michele is grabbing everyone’s attention right now. Dewi Irma writes t’s august, and summer is almost over. This means that the seasonal heat is making ways for cooler fall breezes and that a new wardrobe welcoming the fall/winter season is here. But autumnal weather doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your outfit, and looks for the fall and winter season are certainly not limited to greys and blacks—as Gucci’s newest collections proves. Gearing up for colder months ahead, the Italian luxury fashion house recently presented its pre-fall and fall/winter 2016 collections, which are remixes of several elements all rolled together in a vibrant and wide range of colours. Indonesia Tatler had the
94
privilege to attend the press preview event of the new collection in Taipei. After the tenure of Tom Ford (1994-2004) and Frida Giannini (2006-2014), Gucci has a new Creative Director, Alessandro Michele (pronounced “Mi-ke-le”, not “Mishelle”). And since he took the helm, Gucci is a brand that’s been more energetic than we’ve seen in years. Guided by Michele’s vision, Gucci’s designs are now more playful while still maintaining a sophisticated structure and composition. The fall/winter 2016 collection, for instance, was themed “Rhizomatic Scores” (a rhizome is a type of root system that feeds on different elements), in reference to the philosophical theories of Deleuze and Guattari. He translated the theme into the collection, indonesia tatler . august 2016
which also focuses on a mixture of different influences from de Medici, 1970s sports, Renaissance bikers and 1980s Italian and French couture right through to Asian influences. Mixed together with street style and verve, the Gucci fall/winter 2016 collection takes fashion lovers on a voyage through time and space. Michele believes that we don’t need to choose just one thing—we can choose multiple meanings, references and eras at the same time. And he sure loves to mix and match: the world of fashion is a playground for his creativity. So this season, Michele took on Catherine de Medici, one of the most powerful women in Europe in the 16th Century, as his muse, letting her travel through time. It’s little

wonder, then, that we saw Renaissance elements in the collection. Michele himself has variously described the new collection as rock ’n’ roll renaissance, 1980s renaissance, street-style renaissance, bourgeois renaissance and chinoiserie renaissance. In short, a beauty of chaos. Let’s nail down the concrete stuff: this collection comprises a lot of eclectic designs, with embellished looks, sequined skirts, tailored trouser suits, Chinese-style collar dresses, sweaters covered in quirky graphics, shiny brocade coats, flowery-embroidered jeans, sequined sheer dresses, capes and brightly coloured tights. The outerwear ranges from street-style bomber jackets and leathered pieces to luxurious furry coats in pink, orange or yellow. These are perfect ensembles to bring colour into the fall and winter months. And for a hint of street, it’s fascinating that Gucci chose the band AC/DC , displaying its logo on the back of a typical couture dress. The pre-fall 2016 collection also does the same thing, presenting a cheerful vibe. From flower-ruffle blazers, pleated gowns, printed pant suits, knitted sweaters, pussy-bow blouses, printed scarves, rainbow tulle skirts, leather dresses, to one-shoulder gowns, this is a collection that’s fun, youthful and energetic. Another notable thing is Michele’s love for the animal world. He created several looks that are snake-centric, from a classic silk pleated dress with the unique embroidery of a few snakes, or a black lace gown with a sequined snake sliding across the chest. There’s also knit and embroidery techniques indonesia tatler . august 2016

here and there in the form of parrots, tigers and black panthers. One thing to remember: before he took the helm as Creative Director, Michele was Gucci’s Head Accessories Designer. So he did what he does best and gave the collection a bang with the perfect accessories. Jewellery from this collection included knuckle rings embellished with spiked pearls, embroidery pearl and crystal faux necklaces, multi-finger ring pearl bracelets, and kitten and pearl earrings. For this season, Michele also showcased large, geeky, heavy-framed glasses in some looks. Almost all of the sunglasses were covered in sparkling gems, from square cats’-eye glasses with gold star studs, glittering glasses, to black eyewear studded with clear stones. The Gucci fall/winter 2016 collection also presented a range of special items, such as headpieces with veils from the 1950s. Fedora hats, turbans, and exaggerated bowler hats also topped off several of the looks. All of these were paired with the unique shoes, such as sparkling and glittering disco sandals, shoes indonesia tatler . august 2016
with snakes crawling on the heels, and a new version of the iconic horsebit loafers. There’s also a love of graffiti. Gucci collaborated with Trevor “Trouble” Andrew, a New York-based street artist also known for his branded alter ego GucciGhost, who presented drawings on some of the garments. Michele also used the Gucci logo as redesigned by GucciGhost in the collection, on a quilted leather bag with chain shoulder strap, a leather shopper customised, biker jackets, as well as on a pleated silk skirt and a plush coat. This is fashion becoming art, quite literally. When Michele moved into the spotlight back in January 2015, stepping up to replace a just-departed Frida Giannini, in the months that followed right up to now, he has continued to surprise everyone. His unusual style fascinates both the press and the market. His total reinvention of the fashion house has also made him one of the most-talkedabout designers this season, and the world has witnessed a transition in Gucci. While the brand’s previous designs were all about slick tailoring and a mature vision, Michele breathed much younger and more whimsical vibes into the brand. But while this makeover has definitely freshened up the label, Michele has managed to make it classic Gucci, remaining true to the heritage of the brand. With Michele’s creations, wearers can now be both high class and rock ‘n’ roll at the same time. Extremely quirky yet simultaneously glamorous, this is what we could call the brave new world of Gucci, leading us to look forward the next breakthrough of the brand.

Unrivalled when it comes to the intensity of its colour, the crème de la crème of beryls is perhaps the only gemstone where inclusions are tolerated. And those in immaculate condition, well, they’re destined for museums or masterpieces. Bulgari’s Italian Extravaganza necklace, one of the key pieces of the Magnificent Inspirations high jewellery collection, is a prime example of a flawless emerald put to good use. The necklace features an astounding 17-carat round emerald complemented by flawless diamonds and emeralds. Designer Cindy Chao enriches her Four Seasons collection with a beautifully crafted floral bangle that highlights a cabochon emerald amid diamonds and tsavorites. Chao crafted this piece using a 360-degree gemsetting technique, which guarantees perfect pavé setting from all angles. Graff, a brand known for its fondness for huge, flawless gemstones, impresses with its diamond-studded Secret Carved Emerald Watch, which features a 33.7-carat emerald carved with flowers. It took Graff ’s craftsmen more than 200 hours of work to mount, set and polish the diamonds in this remarkable secret watch. Newcomer Nirav Modi from India, meanwhile, has chosen two perfectly cut Colombian emeralds from its trove of gemstones and transformed them into floral dangling earrings surrounded by diamonds. Not to be outdone, Tiffany & Co has created a striking set comprising emerald and diamond drop earrings and an emerald-set ring in platinum. indonesia tatler . august 2016

Game on A playful side to haute horology shows through in timepieces that indulge the child in all of us, writes Charlene Co
e all swoon over elegant, impeccably polished and extremely complex watches—and why not? This time, however, let’s examine some pieces whose primary purpose is to entertain. Take Christophe Claret’s Margot watch. This ultra-feminine timepiece features a game we all probably played at some point in our adolescence, or maybe even in our adult lives, “He loves me. He loves me not.” With each press, a petal is tucked beneath the dial, and when all the petals disappear, the answer is revealed in French in beautiful calligraphy. With the Labyrinth watch by Hautlence, CEO Sandro Reginelli hoped to revive a game he often played as a child. completely in the game. It’s in the dark that MB&F’s Black Badger shines—with the benefit of a composite called AGT Ultra that maintains a glow for 40 per cent longer than Superluminova. This truly cool watch is available in “radar” green, “phantom” blue and purple “reign.” Care for a game of poker? Perrelet offers a timely proposition with the Turbine XL Poker. The watch conceals a winning hand revealed only when the titanium turbine spins at full speed and slowly displays your cards. No stranger to inventive designs, Urwerk does not disappoint with the UR-105 TA Clockwork Orange. The titanium piece features wandering satellites—each completing four 120-degree turns within an hour. For the ’80s child, Romain Jerome’s Super Mario Bros watch is a dream. Much to the delight of Nintendo fans, Romain Jerome stays faithful to the star, Mario, who is pixelperfect in his red shirt and blue overalls— exactly how he appeared in our boxed TVs.

Space and Time
Louis Vuitton takes ‘Indonesia Tatler’ on a timeless journey through the marriage of art, travel and time that embodies the idea of nothingness ay back in 2001, Louis Vuitton unveiled a department with which the brand had not before been acquainted: watchmaking. The first Louis Vuitton watch was created and, with that, a meaningful name was brought into the world of timepieces: Tambour. Since then, the distinctive design of this watch has given rise to a whole collection of timekeepers for both men and women. Simple Tambour models and complicated versions (GMT, Chronograph, Tourbillion, Spin Time and repetitions minutes) have all enabled the brand to remain true to its demanding standards in the quest for exceptional services as well as to maintain its name as an acclaimed watchmaker. To extend and achieve these aims and more, Louis Vuitton brought together the finest craftsmen in the world. With its headquarters based in Paris, the timepieces themselves are carefully created in Geneva, Switzerland, in workshops whose name alone epitomises its spirit: La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. To celebrate this chapter in Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking history, the brand has created a workspace that is conducive to creativity. This workshop brings together all of Louis Vuitton’s principles when it comes to watchmaking, such as its respect for tradition, craftsmanship and innovation, and with that a heavenly marriage of travel and time is created. With this collaboration, Louis Vuitton has obtained the Poinçon de Genève certification, joining an inner circle of celebrated maisons. The Poinçon de Genève is an independent

institution regulated by the laws of the Geneva canton, which examines the manufacturing and finishing of all the components that go into the making of a watch. It has guaranteed the highest degree of craftsmanship and compliance with fine watchmaking standards since 1886. Sixteen months after establishing itself in Geneva, La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton shone even brighter after having achieved this distinction. The Flying Tourbillon Poinçon de Genève watch is a major advancement for Louis Vuitton watchmaking, being the first timepiece to receive the certification. The skeleton tourbillon movement and an indonesia tatler . august 2016
exceptional degree of transparency make this watch one of the brand’s masterpieces. The powerful impact of “nothingness” imposes its presence on this timepiece where the contemporary approach is combined with the highest degree of watchmaking quality. The Poinçon de Genève states that the surface of each watch component must be decorated. Louis Vuitton fuels this with its modern vision while retaining the purity of the brand. The V of the tourbillon cage at 6 o’clock is entirely black polished and has a mirror-like shine. The case alternates between a mirror-like shine and a circular satin-brushed finish. The LV104 calibre was developed from scratch by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton and the skeleton calibre appears to be suspended in mid-air by invisible forces, as if floating inside its 950 platinum case. With lightness in mind, the dial is made of smoked sapphire, achieved by metalisation. As the newest addition to the Louis Vuitton collections, the case is a combination of a circle and a square. Measuring 41mm in width and 43.7mm diagonally, it fits into no existing shape category. At just 9.1mm thick, the Flying Tourbillon Poinçon de Genève watch fits naturally on any wrist. This creation is one of Louis Vuitton’s trendsetters because it plays with nothingness, oozes sophistication and yet is the ultimate definition of simplicity. indonesia tatler . august 2016

What are your overall plans for the company during the rest of 2016? Overall, we are keeping the momentum going. This year started great, and although the watch industry is slowing down, our first quarter saw growth of 15 per cent: better than last year’s fourth quarter. We do believe that the brand is in great shape and more new clients are coming in, so we have a lot to do. Regarding Indonesia, I just had a talk with the team about what the market would need and the allocation. As a result, we are going to reallocate sales from another country to Indonesia, and when [the management team] leaves the country today, the question is how to explore this country’s qualitative potential.
Supply and Demand
Meeting ‘Indonesia Tatler’ amid his busy schedule, François-Henry Bennahmias, CEO of Audemars Piguet, explains the Swissbased luxury watchmaker’s philosophy of ‘fewer, bigger and better’ s ceo of Audemars Piguet, FrançoisHenry Bennahmias continues to develop strategies that both surprise and delight markets and buyers everywhere and which keep this historic brand growing and innovating. He was once an avid golfer, ranking number 25 in France; now Bennahmias has developed a bold drive for excellence in challenges and adventures that befits a high-quality, luxury watchmaker.
106
One of your mottos is “fewer, bigger and better”. Could you elaborate on its implementation in the company’s future plans? Basically, we know that today we produce some 40,000 watches and we’re going to keep producing 40,000 for the next five years, no matter what. But we want to increase the actual demand to 45,000 or 50,000 pieces and yet still make 40,000. So, our goals are building the brand equity, perceived value and really sell the watches where they make the most sense. If business in a country goes down, we can take the watches away to dry out the market a little bit and move them to a market that’s booming—such as Indonesia. That’s a qualitative example of “fewer, bigger and better”. How’s progress in creating the upcoming new classical line and chronograph movement, as mentioned during SIHH 2016? It’s done, but it’s going to come during SIHH 2018. Why? There are specific reasons for that, which include making our buyers wait in anticipation. And the new chronograph will also be there. What should buyers look forward to from Audemars Piguet at SIHH 2017? I can tell you that a Royal Oak Concept RD#2 will be presented at SIHH 2017; if you remember, the RD#1 Supersonnerie was presented during SIHH 2015. There will also be a women’s watch launched at the pre-SIHH event in Florence, Italy, on November 10, and I can guarantee you that the watch will rock. I’ve had three women in their 30s and 70s try it on and their reactions were the same: “Wow! I want one!” In all of my 22 years of working for Audemars Piguet, never have I seen this response for a women’s watch. indonesia tatler . august 2016

sleek, contemporary look to the iconic pen. Here the managing director explains more about the collection and the brand’s presence throughout history. Can you tell our readers about what you’re launching and what are the key highlights of the collection? For our 110th anniversary, we are re-launching the Rouge et Noir collection, which was the first safety-fountain pen collection and launched in 1909. In accordance with our pioneering spirit—innovation, performance, high quality and fine craftsmanship—we are giving the original product a modern design while still keeping luxury in mind. What can you share with watch and writing instrument collectors with regards to the link between Meisterstück writing instruments and the Meisterstück Heritage watch collection? The watch we have here is from the Meisterstück Heritage collection that is inspired by the iconic Meisterstück writing instruments created in 1924. We have taken the values and traditions of the brand to design the new watch, because everything we do is linked to the past, with a touch of modernity to keep up with the times.

Is there really a future for the fountain pen? Yes, the pens, especially fountain pens, will survive because, as of today, the sales to younger people are actually increasing. The reason is very simple: a pen is used at important events and people use it to better record and remember their thoughts. Also, in regards to our pioneering spirit, we were the first to create luxurious stylus as a novelty item for the touch-screen user. How do you view the prospects for the Indonesian market? What are Montblanc’s plans for Indonesia? In Indonesia we already have a long history and very good presence with six boutiques, which is more than any other luxury brand’s stores. The market is very dynamic and in the next few years we are looking forward to new developments due to more people, the younger generation included, buying luxury goods in Indonesia. Those in the upper middle class will also start buying, resulting in retail developments to market our products: leather, watches and writing instruments included. More information about Rouge et Noir and other products can be found on www. montblanc.com, while Montblanc boutiques are located at major shopping venues.

“That tan looks so unflattering on you,” said no one, ever. Whether a sun worshipper looking to enhance your natural glow or a shade addict who’d rather fake it entirely, it’s time to embrace bronze. Aside from brushing across cheeks, noses, brows and chins, bronze is also a universally flattering colour swept across lids—try the excellent metallic creams from Tom Ford and Charlotte Tilbury, or the delightful new palette from shimmer specialists Bobbi Brown. Hypnotic Beauty Cartier mesmerises with its latest line of watches for women
All the material in this feature was supplied by Cartier

n one stylish and disciplined stroke, Cartier has created a new classic: “The Hypnose” is a jewellery watch that is able to finely balance both sophisticated evening wear and exquisite day wear with its strong aesthetic appeal that manifests in the form and power of an illusion inspired by its lines. The Hypnose line features a flattened oval case, unlike the original “Baignoire”. The case is pavé-set with diamonds. The case is further accentuated by an outer oval element, set with graduating diamonds. The pair of oval cases creates an
illusion of concentric circles, with the black lacquer filling the hollow between the two cases, combined with the luminosity of the brilliant diamonds bring about a sense of savoir-faire. The oval Cartier case was originally designed in 1912 by Louis Cartier. The first production oval-form watch was put into production in 1956. Known as the “Baignoire”, its distinct design was immediately recognised by the bulbous nature of the bezel. Paired with an oval-linked bracelet, and a concealed crown, it quickly became the quintessential women’s watch. Cartier is a company full of heritage, so it is no surprise that the Hypnose line harks back to such a classic design. The Hypnose series comes in three different versions. The first version, dubbed “high jewellery”, comes with a diamond-set dial and bracelet. The second version comes with diamond-set dial and alligator skin strap. These two versions feature the black lacquer in between the two ovals, giving even more depth to the illusion. The last version comes with a silver dial and Roman numerals that have become characteristic of Cartier. All three versions are available in 18-carat white or pink gold, and comes in both small and large models. The Hypnose watches run on quartz movement, thus eliminating the need for a crown. n

Indonesia, under President Joko Widodo and his cabinet’s ministers, once again looks out to the sea that borders the archipelago. On June 23, President JOkO “Jokowi” Widodo visited the natuna islands and held a limited cabinet meeting on board the Imam Bonjol, the 793-tonne ship that had clashed with a Chinese fishing vessel just the previous week. in the warship’s guest book, the president jotted down a short message: “Jaga … Pertahankan nkri!!!”. simply translated, this means: “Guard … defend the unitary state of the republic of indonesia!!!” THE LEADER President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla lead a closed meeting at the presidential office
116
The visit sent a strong signal to the world that the Natuna Islands, including the surrounding waters, are part of Indonesia’s territory—a clear message on efforts to protect the country’s sovereignty over the area, which lies on the southern edge of the South China Sea. “The Natuna Islands are part of Indonesia’s sovereignty and that is final,” said Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung. Upholding sovereignty over the vast archipelago is one of the main programmes of Jokowi’s cabinet. At the on-location cabinet meeting, the president discussed the improvement of the Natuna Islands’ fisheries industry and the development of the oil and gas sectors there. Thousands of fishing boats from Java will be relocated to the Natunas, and there are currently some 12 oil and gas corporations operating in the area, which is in the internationally recognised exclusive
economic zone of Indonesia. Since taking office in October 2014, President Jokowi has vowed to toughen Indonesia’s approach to the country’s sovereignty as part of his broader vision of turning Indonesia into a global maritime fulcrum between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. As regards illegal fishing, the administration can no longer tolerate a situation in which more than 5,000 ships from neighbouring countries, as well as China, have operated illegally in its waters every day, making a mockery of Indonesia’s sovereignty and resulting in annual losses of more than US$20 billion. When President Jokowi came into power, hundreds illegal fishing vessels were sunk and illegal fishing fell by 80 per cent. Then, on March 7, authorities bombed the Nigeriaflagged Viking, the last major ship wanted internationally because of its years spent illegally fishing toothfish from southern waters. “This is to serve as a deterrent to others,” Minister of Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said. This maritime strategy means Indonesia will pursue its national interests and thus enhance prosperity for the people. On April 5, President Jokowi visited Papua to inaugurate a number of infrastructure projects. It was his fourth visit in two years to the easternmost province that shares its border with Papua New Guinea, and he started his rounds with the inauguration of the Port of Wasior in Wondamba Bay, West Papua. In his speech then, President Jokowi stressed the importance of constructing such a port. “[It] is essential for equitable development. Furthermore, the port will help suppress the prices of goods in Papua.” As of now, there are 27 seaports ready to operate by the end of this year, while another 68 are in progress—not only in Papua, but also in the Moluccas, East Nusa Tenggara and Celebes. The new ports are also part of the government’s sea toll-road and shipping programme that connects Jakarta’s and Surabaya’s ports to other major seaports. Three freighters currently ply three routes as part of the programme, transporting cargo between the two largest ports in Java and a dozen ports in Papua, the Moluccas, Celebes and the Riau Islands. There will be six routes next year with subsidised passenger tickets to boost travel. The moves will enhance economic growth and lessen price disparity between the regions. indonesia tatler . august 2016
GREETING HIS PEOPLE President Joko Widodo and the First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo visit a location for free groceries distribution at the Tanah Abang area, Jakarta
In addition, 10 new tourist destinations are to be developed. The government has acknowledged tourism as a vital sector for growth and has set it as a main priority for the country’s economic and national development. On January 1, President Jokowi, dressed in a simple sarong and tunic, witnessed the first sunrise of 2016 at the Waiwo Beach dock in Raja Ampat, West Papua. Admiring the stunning beauty of the world’s foremost epicentre of marine biodiversity, the president expressed his desire for more tourists to come to Indonesia. “We have 10 new tourist destinations,” said Jokowi. “I am sure that we can attract 20 million tourists per year in the three to four years to come.” A number of actions have been taken to boost the industry. As of March 21, travellers from 169 countries are now entitled to receive a 30-day free visa upon arrival thanks to a new law signed by President Jokowi on March 2. Tourist arrivals reached 10.41 million in 2015, an impressive number compared with 9.4 million in 2014. Meanwhile, foreign exchange earned from tourism in 2014 was some Rp 155 trillion, equivalent to 4 per cent of the GDP, making the industry rank only fourth behind indonesia tatler . august 2016
oil and gas, coal and palm oil. “The government is boosting the tourism sector because it increases job opportunities,” said Rizal Ramli, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs. “With an increase of inbound tourists to 20 million and foreign exchange earned rising to US$20 billion, jobs in the industry could increase from 3 million to 7 million.” The 22 months he’s been in power have been crucial in President Jokowi and his cabinet simply “getting the job done”. But there remains more to do. The ambitious scheme to increase an additional 35,000 megawatts of electricity capacity by 2019 has hit a couple of snags. On June 2, on a field trip to West Kalimantan, President Jokowi discovered a huge but decrepit mobile power due to neglect for eight years. “This kind of problem has to be solved right away,” said the president. And he underlined his point with his trademark honesty: “It has, after all, guzzled a huge budget of Rp. 1.5 trillion!” Safe to say that in his hands and with his vision, Indonesia looks set to become more efficient, more attractive and more economically advanced.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama
Incorruptible. Fearless. Outspoken. These are just some of the words that incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama has been associated with. Even his opposition can’t deny the truth in these words. More intimately known as Ahok, Jakarta’s governor is as efficient as he is straightforward. During his thus-far short tenure as governor of Jakarta, he has already done more than any of his predecessors. He has resettled slum-dwellers into low-cost apartments while cleaning out waterways and drains, greatly reducing Jakarta’s annual flooding. He has improved traffic tremendously by resettling street vendors and illegal mass parking into corresponding buildings. And under his leadership, Jakarta also has seen its slums turned into green open spaces comprising parks and recreational spaces. Taman Waduk Pluit is one such transformation: this area went from a dumping ground for the surrounding slums to a green area complete with sports and exercise facilities. Most importantly, Ahok has cultivated a reputation for being an avid advocate of clean governance. The city’s administration now operates with much more transparency. A newly implemented e-budgeting system tracks budget allocations and guards against any dubious changes. Despite his unorthodox ways, one cannot help but notice the positive direction that Jakarta is moving in. While it is still early days, Jakarta’s future looks a lot brighter with Ahok leading the way. indonesia tatler . august 2016

Ganjar Pranowo
Dubbed the “Twitter Governor” for his constant presence on Indonesia’s thriving social media, it’s no wonder that Ganjar Pranowo is one of the nation’s most popular politicians. His down-to-earth attitude and willingness to communicate directly with the people are certainly plus points. Ganjar faces Central Java’s various problems with the positive attitude that any issue can be solved as long as it has the cooperation of the people. He also recently declared 2016 to be the year that would see the development of Central Java’s tourism infrastructure and the year to make a push for its identity as a prime tourist destination. On his part, he has personally promoted the region on a work trip to the Netherlands, creating specific packages for various spots—even those off the beaten tourist track. Ganjar singlehandedly brought to life Central Java’s botanical gardens— Baturaden Botanical Garden had been in a state of neglect for 14 years before Ganjar intervened. The Karimunjawa archipelago is also getting upgrades in the form of running electricity and a bigger port to allow the docking of bigger ships. A leader with such integrity, competence, and the ability to bring people together is exactly the leader that Indonesia needs right now.

On the surface, architect and urban planner Ridwan Kamil may not seem like an instinctive choice for mayor of this vast city. But his 17 years of experience in the field of architecture together with his reform-minded vision led him to a landslide victory, winning 45 per cent of the vote. His vision for Bandung is grand, involving transforming it into a “smart city” in which the city’s assets are managed by integrated information and communication technology. Ridwan intends to make use of existing mobile technology to simplify bureaucracy and improve public services. In this smart Bandung of the future, mobile connectivity will give citizens access to various kinds of information and the ability to perform administrative tasks. Kang Emil, as he is more commonly known, is also looking to turn Bandung into a more livable and environmentally conscious city. He is one of the few Indonesian mayors who has strongly emphasised the importance of environmental sustainability, and he pioneered the “Indonesia Berkebun” programme, which promotes turning unused urban land into agricultural spaces for the community. This programme has now been implemented in more than 30 cities across Indonesia. In addition to all his work on the environment, Ridwan has also set up a local anti-graft committee. This committee has been given special access to perform regular checks on suspected agencies. Handling so many issues at one go is certainly no easy task, but if there is one mayor capable of doing it, it definitely would be Kang Emil.

Kaum and Get It A passionate team of cultural entrepreneurs is redefining what it means to eat, drink and live like an Indonesian—in Sai Ying Pun. Ronald Akili introduces Charmaine Mok to Potato Head and its celebration of his island nation
There is a certain charm to the rusticity of a simple plate of rendang unfussily garnished yet proudly presented 122
n a time when dining trends are dictated by how intricately a chef can plate his microgreens and edible flowers, there is a certain charm to the rusticity of a simple plate of rendang—a rich elixir of coconut milk and spices enveloping meat and vegetables—unfussily garnished yet proudly presented. The version we try comes with a flutter of purple sweet potato crisps, a drizzle of ivory coconut cream and a tangle of red chilli and fried shallots. We knock elbows with our fellow diners, each desperate for another helping of the tender beef and red beans, which have soaked up the flavours of ginger, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, turmeric leaves and ground red chillies—the thick sauce a product of at least eight hours of slow cooking to achieve its sultry complexity. Rendang daging sapi is one of the standout dishes of the newly opened Kaum restaurant at Potato Head Hong Kong, and the ritual of eating it is an ideal way to start exploring the philosophy behind this ambitiously multifaceted lifestyle project by PTT Family, headed by Indonesian entrepreneurs Ronald Akili and Jason Gunawan. The duo started their business seven years ago in Jakarta with the original Potato Head, a casual restaurant serving comfort food and killer cocktails, and have since created several of the region’s hottest destinations—most famously the Potato Head Beach Club at Seminyak, Bali, and Potato Head Folk in Singapore’s Keong Saik district, where international hipsters mingle with Chinatown denizens. At the heart of this budding empire, though, is a yearning to capture and disseminate the richness and diversity of Indonesian culture and cuisine while presenting it through the eyes of the global citizen. Ronald, who is of Chinese and Indonesian heritage (his father’s side hails from northern Sulawesi), explains that the Hong Kong project has been an opportunity for him to continue learning about his own culture through creating a microcosm of Indonesia via its food, drink, design and architecture. Ronald spent 13 years at school and university in Hawaii, graduating with a master’s degree in entrepreneurial studies, before returning to his hometown of Jakarta in his early-twenties to do an internship with a property developer. After a year, Ronald started his own residential project, Tanah Teduh, with acclaimed architect Andra Matin and nine other leading Indonesian designers, who instilled in him an appreciation for local materials and sustainable design. “When I went back to Indonesia, I realised how rich and unique our culture was,” he recalls. Indeed, just two years after embarking on the project, Ronald decided to launch the first Potato Head in Jakarta’s Pacific Place; Tanah Teduh was completed in 2012. indonesia tatler . august 2016

This curiousity about Indonesian culture and aesthetics is clear in his Hong Kong project, opened in collaboration with Yenn Wong’s Jia Group (which provided the premises, a multistorey former kindergarten on Third Street, Sai Ying Pun) and with interior design by Sou Fujimoto. It’s easy to clock the acclaimed Japanese architect’s signature geometric style, with stacked square frames creating individual spaces for the I Love You So Coffee bar that greets guests upon entry to Potato Head, or Canaan, a lifestyle boutique peddling Indonesian crafts and clothing. But move further into the space, where the all-day cafe and bar blends into Kaum, the restaurant, and you begin to see the intricate detailing of the ceiling panels that represents the artistry of the Torajans, an ethnic group from South Sulawesi known for their abstract wood carvings. Here, dishes such as that extraordinary rendang are served, thanks to the work of chef Antoine Audran
and champion of Indonesian cuisine Lisa Virgiano, who have collaborated on a culinary programme that highlights traditions from at least five of Indonesia’s major islands. “It’s so underrated,” Ronald says of the cuisine. “We have at least 600 different tribes in Indonesia and every single one has different ingredients and techniques. There are dishes that even I’m not familiar with, because they come from different tribes that I’ve never been exposed to. We have so much potential to offer, and here we are given the opportunity to put our cuisine on the global map.” Adds Lisa, “The public tends to misunderstand Indonesian cuisine as only street food or Javanese-centric, when Indonesia consists of more than 17,000 islands with diverse ethnicities, cultures and sublanguages. From Aceh in Sumatra to Papua in the east, there are amazing techniques for cooking, preserving and highlighting the harmony of nature though local ingredients and Indonesian flavours.” You’ll find familiar Indonesian dishes that have pervaded kitchens around the globe, such as gado gado and sate, but Kaum’s chefs will also be highlighting esoteric ingredients such as field mushrooms exclusively found on Bangka Island off Sumatra, or rice harvested by a small producer in Kalimantan, Borneo. Rare Andaliman wild pepper from North Sumatra adds its citrussy tinge (much like Sichuan pepper) to wok-fried noodles, highlighting the Chinese influence in the cuisine. To fire the

Over 18 months, Antoine and Lisa have been researching the unique food cultures of Indonesian tribes (indeed, kaum means tribe in Bahasa Indonesia), bringing back with them forgotten techniques such as bamboo grilling and various applications of fermentation. Ronald plans to open more branches of Kaum, starting with Bali later this summer. It’s a symbolic move for the young Indonesian, who stays connected to his culture even when building an international empire. “We’re all global citizens. We’re exposed to many different cultures and are constantly travelling,” he says. “But we also have our own traditions that we’re proud of, and we always want to bring that back to the forefront.”

Grab another cab and head to the neoclassical Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre (CCBB), which recalls the history of Rio during its time as the nation’s capital from 1763 until 1960, when the modernist new city of Brasília took the mantle. From there it’s an easy walk to Candelária Church, a baroque 1775 structure much in demand for the weddings of Rio’s great and good.
1pm
A 20-minute cab trip will get you to Sugarloaf Mountain, the perfect spot for lunch. Ask the driver to drop you at the cable car and ride up to Cota 200, the stunning new restaurant on the first of the mountain’s two peaks. Be sure to make a reservation, which will allow you to breeze past the queue for the cable car. At Cota 200, ceilings soar over a cool, elegant, white space, and the topnotch menu features generous serves of dishes such as sun-cured grilled steak (picanha de sol) and duck magret with jabuticaba, a deep purple, berry-like fruit.
128
Once sated, head over to the helipad and take one of Helisight’s panoramic flights. These range from a six-minute whirl along the beaches up to a 60-minute extravaganza that takes in the whole city and crosses the bay to Niteroi to admire Oscar Niemeyer’s UFO-like MAC museum. There’s no better way to understand this gorgeous, voluptuous city than from the air.
4.30pm
Take the cable car back down and a short cab ride to Urca, one of Rio’s best-kept secrets. Nestled in a bay below Sugarloaf Mountain, the district is a haven of 1920s architecture with a quiet, cosy charm. Best of all is Bar Urca, a traditional bar and restaurant facing the waterfront. Cariocas sit on the seawall here to soak up the sunset, slipping across the road for bottles of beer from the simple bar. Take your time and relax. Order a shrimp pie or two as well. The old-fashioned restaurant upstairs turns out superb, classic seafood dishes too.
8pm
With a reservation made well ahead— we’re talking days rather than hours—it’s off to Oro, the newest and brightest jewel in Rio’s gastronomic crown. Owned and run by chef Felipe Bronze, Oro started life elsewhere in the city but closed in mid-2015, with the new incarnation opening in April this year. From the molecular wonders of the original Oro, Bronze has developed a new, grill-based menu that’s just as sophisticated, but celebrates smoke, fire and glowing embers. Choose the full “Creativity” tasting menu and enjoy the stunning surroundings.
11pm
Round off the day with cocktails in the urban-industrial setting of the bar Usina 47, just four blocks from Oro—or rev up for a long night out (Usina 47 has a spacious bar and dancefloor upstairs). sun daze From top: the museum of Tomorrow is an architectural showstopper; Ipanema Beach; Cota 200 on the first peak of sugarloaf mountain is a dreamy lunch spot

Where to Stay Don’t go past these resplendent retreats Belmond Copacabana palace
You can’t beat the grande dame, the face of Rio glamour since it was inaugurated in 1923. Don’t be deceived by the old-fashioned facade; there’s nothing out of date about the service or facilities. With a new Asian fusion restaurant, Mee, joining the classic Cipriani, the hotel is a magnet for those in search of the best Rio has to offer. The large, deeply luxurious suites are a marvel, as is the matchless breakfast. But the special sauce in the Hyatt’s recipe is the utterly charming, superbly trained staff. The hotel is in Barra da Tijuca, the district that hosts most of the Olympic venues, and there are endless soft sandy beaches nearby.

As sleek and streamlined as the Copa is expansive and baroque, the Fasano brings luxury to the Ipanema beachfront. The rooms are smallish but well designed, with lavish details and views to die for. The panorama from the roof terrace takes in the Two Brothers peaks and Christ the Redeemer, making sunset cocktails very special indeed.
Santa Teresa Hotel
The Santa Teresa Hotel RJ MGallery by Sofitel cultivates an exclusive, mysterious air from the outside, but it’s warm and comfortable on the inside. Its superb restaurant, Térèze, serves Pablo Ferreyra’s outstanding dishes, such as sparklingly fresh lobster and exquisite lamb chops, in an utterly romantic setting.
Vila Santa Teresa
This incredible boutique hotel high in the hills has what may be the best views of any hotel in Rio—the city, the bay, the ocean, the mountains—from its lovely pool deck and its luxurious, faultlessly designed rooms. Elegant, restrained luxury reigns in the 1970s mansion, which is set on an immense, leafy estate.
Day 2
9am
Rio’s magnificent Botanical Garden at the foot of Corcovado, the mountain from which Christ the Redeemer presides, is a great spot for a peaceful start to the day. The visual treats include a grand avenue of imperial palms, a sensory garden, the ruins of the old gunpowder works, and an orchid house featuring more than 700 species. The streets of the surrounding upmarket Jardim Botânico neighbourhood are rich with vegetation too and harbour some of the city’s best restaurants and cafes.
11am
Nearby is the stunningly green and shady Parque Lage, which is home to a picturesque 1920s mansion that houses the School of Visual Arts, the alma mater of Beatriz Milhazes, among other notable Brazilian artists. After a turn around the

park, enjoy a coffee on the mansion’s beautiful terrace.
1pm
One of the gastronomic stars putting Jardim Botânico firmly on the map, both locally and internationally, is Puro, where chef-proprietor Pedro Siqueira serves creative, delicious twists on classic Brazilian dishes with sweet simplicity and unbeatable produce.
3pm
With lunch out of the way, it’s time to head off to another leafy neighbourhood nearby, Gávea, and one of the city’s loveliest art institutions, Instituto Moreira Salles, which has an outstanding reputation for fine art photography. The 1951 mansion epitomises Brazil’s world-famous slant on modernism, with its smooth lines and white curves accentuated by lush tropical gardens created by landscape maestro Roberto Burle Marx. If you only visit one cultural space in Rio, this would be an excellent choice. indonesia tatler . august 2016

A short stroll away is Anita Schwartz Art Gallery. The building itself, a tall concrete confection, is worthy of attention along with the works by Brazilian and international artists within.
6.30pm

Still up for some fun? For a taste of nightlife beyond the upscale South Zone (which includes Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Jardim Botânico and Botafogo, among other districts), head downtown to Lapa, where the streets overflow with samba and the carioca spirit. Utterly chic Casa Momus is a recent addition, the result of a loving, two-year renovation of an early-1800s building. Try for a table on the front terrace to watch the street fun, or settle inside over wine or a zingy caipirinha. Roll on to Rio Scenarium, a beautiful bar-cum-antiques emporium, where you can samba till dawn, or look up Circo Voador or Fundição Progresso, two lively Lapa music venues, where you might just catch one of the stars of Brazilian music. For a saideira—that’s Portuguese for the last drink of the night—wrap up with a tipple and a saltcod rissole at Nova Capela.

Right as Rain Cold, wet weather meant the 2008 growing season was a challenge in Bordeaux. A spell of warm, dry conditions in July and an Indian summer in September saved the season from being a write-off, and some outstanding wines were made. James Suckling attended a small tasting of the 2008 Bordeaux vintage during Vinexpo Hong Kong in May. Here are his top 10, including two exciting whites Château La ConseiLLante PomeroL The sweetness of fruit and the balance are really impressive. Medium to full body, fine tannins, and a light milk chocolate, blueberry and spice character. Bright acidity gives it verve. Drink or hold. 93 points

Château montrose saint-estèPhe The purity and precision in this wine is exciting. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins, and a long finish of currant and spice. Black tea and bark too. Better in 2020 but beautiful now. Decant before serving. 95 points
Château smith haut Lafitte PessaC-Léognan Decadent and rich on the nose with lots of ripe fruit and meaty undertones. Almost truffle-like. Full body, lots of ripe tannins and plenty of fruit. Still needs time to soften. Big and juicy for the vintage. Better in 2018 but impressive now. 95 points
Château LéoviLLe Barton saint-JuLien This was always one of the wines of the vintage, with currant, cassis and chocolate aromas and flavours. Full body, chewy and polished tannins, and a fresh and fine finish. Tight now but so beautiful. Decant a couple of hours before serving. 94 points

Good Value Excellent release prices in Bordeaux, a promising season in Australia and a spirited performance by baijiu make James Suckling’s monthly news round-up
that’S the SPirit
China’s most popular spirit, baijiu, is getting a boost as hipster bars across the US as well as in China incorporate it as a new base for highend cocktails. Bars like Lumos in New York are concocting many unusual and baijiu-based drinks with mung bean and almond milk to compete with other spirit-based beverages. At home, bars like Capital in Beijing are experimenting with baijiu cocktails as well to attract a younger generation of consumers who, unlike older generations, are exposed to a wider variety of spirits, such as whisky and cognac.

Bordeaux 2015 en primeur could be the most exciting since 2010 for the vintage’s overall high quality. As a result, most release prices are higher than previous release prices, especially for first growths. The 2015 release price for first growth Château Margaux, for instance, stands at US$432, while its 2014 vintage was priced at 240 euros (US$280 at the time), according to figures released by Liv-ex. These are prices to Bordeaux wine merchants; consumers will pay substantially more. Wines from Margaux, Pessac-Léognan and the Right Bank performed particularly well, according to WineSearcher. Other first growth release prices are US$432 (384 euros) for Mouton, US$433 (385 euros) for Haut-Brion and US$466 (420 euros) for Lafite.

Australia’s 2016 vintage could be one of the best in years, with excellent grape yields and high quality, according to various press reports. Southern wine regions such as Canberra, the Barossa Valley, Margaret River and Tasmania could harvest one of the best vintages in recent years. No vineyards were damaged by the bushfires that ravaged Tasmania in January.

T
he final chapter of The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection has arrived. The final decanter, Peerless Spirit, exudes a level of refinement and craftsmanship that can only be achieved by the highest level of mastery. The spirit contained within this decanter is nothing short of extraordinary: a 65-year-old whisky; one of the oldest and rarest to be released by the distillery. The Peerless Spirit decanter brings to a close a decade-long partnership between two creators with a shared passion for craftsmanship, detail and excellence. For this release, only 450 individually numbered decanters will be available. Peerless Spirit is a celebration of the wonderfully rich, viscous, and aromatic spirit that lies at the heart of The Macallan. The natural colour and rich flavour that are absorbed from the bespoke Spanish oak casks round up the distinctive character and quality that has made The Macallan one of the most prestigious single malt whiskies in the world. The whisky has a medium body with hints of cracked black pepper, cloves and toasted cocoa beans. The aroma is remarkably balanced, with soothing notes of honey-dipped Madagascan vanilla pods, cinnamon and Moroccan dates.
Each of the exquisitely designed decanters in this collection draws inspiration from a design or a specific technique from the founding father of Lalique, Rene Lalique’s heritage. Marc Larminaux, Creative Director for Lalique, conceptualised this decanter design around a single peerless drop of The Macallan, symbolising its rarity. The Six Pillars Collection has become some of the most sought-after among collectors all over the world for its beautiful design and high quality whisky. The Macallan 65 years old in Lalique: Peerless Spirit is set to continue that tradition. It is valued at US$35,000. n

Fresh products and ingredients inspire him to produce quality creations and to transform them into delectable French cuisine. “My grandfather was the one who encouraged me to be a chef,” he tells Indonesia Tatler. “I come from the countryside and was used to sitting at the table for many long

At that moment, I decided that I wanted to make a difference and help people enjoy their food,” says Gilles, whose role model is a three-Michelin-star chef Bernard Pacaud. ndonesia tatler was recently invited to the UK for a twoday luxury stay as part of the pre-inaugural cruise of the Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Harmony of the Seas. Our expectations were high, but Harmony of the Seas exceeded all of them. Measuring in at a length of 361 metres by 65 metres wide and weighing 226,000 tonnes, Harmony of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship to ever set sail. Construction took more than two years and the ship cost more than a billion dollars to build. Comprising 2,747 staterooms, the cruise can carry some 7,000 guests alongside its 2,300 international crewmembers. Staggeringly, it boasts 20

restaurants and 42 bars and lounges for the intrepid traveller to explore. These are arrayed, along with retail outlets and other amenities, over 16 guest decks to fulfill all guests’ dining, shopping, entertainment and relaxation needs. The 16 decks are divided into seven neighbourhoods for simple navigation: Central Park, Royal Promenade, Boardwalk, a youth zone, an entertainment area, the Vitality at Sea spa and fitness centre, and a pool and sports zone. The check-in system at the terminal was reassuringly efficient, and, on our first day, we enjoyed dinner at the Solarium Bistro restaurant, famous for its Mediterranean cuisine. At one point, our glasses started to shake: the deep blast of the horn signalled the

cruise’s departure from Southampton for our two-night trip into the English Channel and back again. There are three kinds of stateroom on the ship: balcony staterooms with private balconies providing an excellent vantage point of the beautiful views, ocean-view staterooms with windows facing the outside, which means never missing a moment of the aquatic scenery, and interior staterooms that come
with LCD screens so you can still take in the views. All rooms also come with speedy Wi-Fi. Meanwhile, there are several specialty restaurants on board. Jamie’s Italian serves rustic Italian dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients. Casually enjoying Italian food with our bare hands was quite an experience. Wonderland serves imaginative cuisine and sweet-shop-inspired cocktails—with its avant-garde décor, a trip here should not be missed. For even more culinary variety, the Windjammer Marketplace buffet restaurant boasts a wide selection of international dishes sure to satisfy any cravings. Having drinks at the Rising Tide Bar on the Royal Promenade was simply amazing given that the bar is on a platform that rises and descends over three decks. Then, at the Bionic Bar, we had drinks served by a pair of robots: we entered our orders into an iPad then sat back as the robots mixed, shook and stirred with clinical precision. For sports fans, golf areas, basketball courts, table tennis tables, badminton courts, waterslides and FlowRiders for surfing are all available. Meanwhile, the ship is equipped

with babysitting facilities and a children’s area. For those seeking more sedate pursuits or simply a relaxing stroll, the 12,000 or so lush green trees and plants and the futuristic vertical wall garden mean that Central Park lives up to its name and certainly takes you to a different place from other cruise liners. In fact, to extend the location analogy further, as we wandered through bars and restaurants that never seemed to close, we got the distinct feeling that we were in New York: the city that never sleeps. But unlike some areas of NYC, the Harmony of the Seas never seemed too crowded. A serene sense of spaciousness has been created by the careful use of open spaces and massive atriums. One of these spaces is occupied by a giant mirror-covered head—an art installation simply entitled Head by Czech artist David Cerny. This is the centrepiece of Harmony of the Sea’s US$6.5m art collection. Curated by International Corporate Art, the collection features bold, striking, and intriguing works by artists from all over the world. After dinner, we enjoyed an incredible iceskating show and then a performance of the timeless classic Grease. We could have gone on to do much more: activities on the cruise don’t stop after sunset. Nightlife on Deck 4 is bustling and bursting with laughter thanks to comedy acts, while live music can be enjoyed at The Attic. For night owls, the nightclub district in the entertainment zone is the place to be for a little dancing and drinking, and, if you’re feeling lucky, head to Casino Royale. This summer, Harmony of the Seas will be sailing around the Western Mediterranean. Book now for the ultimate holiday destination at sea. For more information please call +62 (21) 319 91338-9.

TRAVEL | LIFE the amazing ningaloo coast Walking through the gorge of Cape Range National Park
t’s 6 o’clock in the morning and we are sitting in a safari car in the Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan. Another jeep parks alongside just before we spot a beautiful tiger. We start talking to two photographers in the car next to us about remote locations to travel to. They are from Australia and seem to be the type of people who know where the wild things are. So we share our experiences. They mention their favourite wildlife places in Australia, and that’s how I hear about Ningaloo Coast for the first time, two years ago, while tracking tigers in India. It’s all about remoteness and big fish, you see… I have been aware of the vastness of Western Australia’s landscape ever since I visited the region some time ago. But I have also been curious about Ningaloo for a while. A place almost unvisited compared with the Great Barrier Reef on the other side of the continent—the former with 19,000 visitors per year, the latter with two million—will always be irresistible to me. Ningaloo is empty. The northwest coast of Western Australia is one of the most isolated places on Earth. This fact alone is already a motive to make me wonder and is a reason in itself to visit the remote reef. It’s far and the difficult logistics to get there (you can only fly in from Perth) mean that there are plenty of locales where you can still chase that feeling of euphoria that belongs to the travelling pioneer. My primary purpose when travelling to Ningaloo, though, was the search for whale sharks. In fact, if my only concern during this trip had been swimming with these majestic creatures, I could have travelled to other locations in the Philippines, Indonesia or even Mexico. But I also care about the conservation of the wildlife I visit. And when it comes to looking after ecosystems, Australia is very often a champion. Only 15 commercial operators have the license to conduct whale shark tours in Western Australia. It is the most-regulated whale shark industry in the world. In addition, dive instructors, skippers and shark mermaids in this part of the world have excellent knowledge about the marine world and are, of course, convinced that the wildlife is worth protecting. Regulation and education play important roles in the conservation crisis. indonesia tatler . august 2016

Unfortunately, it’s not only good news. While Australia is a worldwide benchmark for whale shark operations, in some other parts of the world protecting this endangered species is not a primary concern. In recent years, whale sharks have started to turn up in numbers in places like Cebu and Yucatan in the Philippines and Mexico, respectively. Locals learn to feed the animals in order to keep them around for a longer time and to thus generate more income with tours. This behavioural modification might have inherent risks for the sharks. The main one is related to their migratory patterns: whale sharks are a highly migratory species and they usually follow the path of nutrient-rich seasonal aggregations of plankton. They migrate for thousands of kilometres across various countries and feeding them means changing this natural pattern. We can’t have wild animals becoming dependent on humans for food. Surprisingly, most of the regions where this disrespect takes place have legislation in place to protect the sharks. However, unlike in Australia, most of the operators don’t pay much attention to it.
Outback Meets Reef
The Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area is located in the very northwestern tip of Australia, which includes the areas of the Ningaloo Marine Park and the Cape Range National Park. It reaches almost 20 kilometres offshore and is where the cool ocean currents from the south meet the warmer currents indonesia tatler . august 2016
from the north: the reason why this region supports a unique mix of tropical and subtropical species. In Ningaloo Reef, you find one of the planet’s largest coral reefs and they can be accessed straight from the beach, something very few other coral reefs offer. It’s pretty much pristine and beyond them are the pelagic megafauna. Swimming with whale sharks (April to July) and humpback whales (August to October) are the highlights, but spotting other kinds of visitors, including dolphins, turtles, manta rays (June to July) and reef sharks, is also popular.

Yet the Ningaloo Coast is not only about the sea life. In contrast to the bright blue waters of Ningaloo Marine Park lie the rugged red gorges and canyons of Cape Range National Park. The deep canyons and precipitous ridges provide a dramatic contrast to the scenery of the adjacent coral reef. It’s where the red Outback flows straight into the Indian Ocean—a breathtaking encounter found nowhere else on earth. The trick to navigating and enjoying these areas is finding the right balance between comfort and wilderness. Luckily, I didn’t have to rough it to enjoy the bush. I found my bed in the wild with Sal Salis. This camp is hidden in the white sand dunes of the Cape Range National Park. And from my tent, I was just a few metres away from the world’s greatest coastal coral reef. The low-impact tents provide a wilderness experience without compromising comfort. All power is solar-generated and the lodge asks guests to respect the strict environmental and sustainability principles. It’s the way we love it: charming and wild. We first explored the Cape Range by joining a gorge walk excursion lead by Paul,

Camp Manager at Sal Salis. The Cape Range National Park is of a high conservation value and home to a large variety of wildlife, including kangaroos. We walked through Mandu Mandu Gorge, 2 kilometres behind the camp, with fossil limestone formations and spectacular views back to the coast and over the Ningaloo Reef. I travelled far to swim with a whale shark, the ocean’s largest fish. So as it turns out the next morning we joined a tour with Ningaloo Live, the exclusive operator of Sal Salis. They take a maximum of 10 guests on the boat while all the other operators take 20. During the season, every early morning, a small spotter plane flies over Exmouth looking for the sharks, which means the skippers have the exact information about their location. I jumped in the water. As the curtain of bubbles cleared from in front of my mask, I opened my eyes. I couldn’t think properly and didn’t really know what to do. I was face to face with a giant. We were so close to each other that I got a bit scared, but soon I realised there was no danger. Time stopped. The shark started to swim fast and I followed indonesia tatler . august 2016
his speed alongside. For almost 30 minutes we swam side by side. After the intimate encounter, suddenly he was gone, submerging on a deep dive into the ocean. I got back to the boat with the wonderful feeling of being out of this world. It’s the nature. And I wanted to do it again and again. Luckily the same whale shark returned to the surface and we had two more turns swimming together. It never failed to amaze. So enamoured were we of the marine wildlife that we also joined a guided kayaksnorkel as well as a dive excursion. We snorkelled on the reef further offshore of Sal Salis at the Blue Lagoon, the best spot I have ever done this in my life. For diving, we went to the Lighthouse Bay area. Watching the

life cycle of the reef with its corals, turtles, rays, reef sharks and hundreds of fishes was even more spectacular when seen through the crystal blue water. For me, the Ningaloo Coast is wild Australia as its very best. Here I got the buzz of new frontiers: the nature is pristine and untouched. I wish I could thank the photographers I met in India for sharing one of Australia’s best-kept natural secrets. I went to Ningaloo on a journey to find whale sharks in their natural habitat and I ended up with that feeling of being stripped away to something bare. The sharks and the entire marine world made me remember that all that really matters is our ability to survive. Getting down to the essentials of our being is always a powerfully attractive idea.

In fact, Katamama has done away entirely with anything so dull as a reception area, instead designating, rather sensibly, the bar as the focal and meeting point of the hotel. I opt to enjoy the rather excellent arrival mojito in the seclusion of my rooftop suite, where a staff member arrives to make it fresh in front of me while I recline on the balcony. Each of the 58 suites—all the rooms are suites—has a balcony or slice of garden, and they all have vast, white-tiled bathrooms with generous tubs, monsoon showers and locally produced shower products. They’re equipped with everything you might need, from a beach bag and sarong (locally produced and naturally dyed with indigo, of course) to the discreetly hidden charging cables for every phone or gadget you could possibly be carrying. is a pleasing lack of plastic throughout the hotel—even the bar uses paper straws. The suite’s “maxi” bar comes fully stocked with large bottles of house-infused spirits, spicy homemade negroni mixes and a full cocktail-making kit. The kit and the chestlike snack box are made by local artisans, the latter filled with a selection of delicious and healthy Balinese treats of cashew nuts, cereal bars and dried mango. I have been in the hotel nearly half an hour before anyone asks me to sign anything, and it is this uber-chilled, no-nonsense vibe that sets Katamama apart from other five-star counterparts. “We got together and tried to pinpoint the things about hotels that we hated, and we eliminated them,” says Andrew Steele, managing director of the hotel division of PTT Family, the hospitality and lifestyle group founded by Balinese businessman Ronald Akili. The group opened its first venture, Potato Head Jakarta, in 2009 and has since added the Potato Head Beach Club Bali (a stone’s throw from Katamama), Jakarta’s Potato Head Garage (a steakhouse), the Three Buns burger and cocktail outlets in Jakarta and Singapore, Potato Head Folk in Singapore, and, most recently, an outpost in Hong Kong’s Sai Ying Pun neighbourhood.
The hotel is the first of three planned for the Seminyak area, along with a second beach club in nearby Canggu. Katamama is directly behind the Potato Head Beach Club, a massive open-air party hotspot with a capacity for 3,500 whose coliseum-like walls are constructed from 1,000 pastel-coloured antique wooden shutters. Somewhat differing in style, the angular, brutalist edifice of the hotel has been built with 1.4 million of the locally handmade red bricks used in the island’s temples. Their dominance is striking, and particularly pleasant when the light dapples and shines through them at different points of the day. Designed by renowned Indonesian architect and longtime PTT collaborator Andra Matin, the property feels very Balimeets-Brooklyn, with geometric patterns and ’60s and ’70s references permeating throughout. Vintage furniture (many pieces from Akili’s personal collection), brightly coloured woven rugs and more than 100 items of Indonesian contemporary art decorate the lofty, airy spaces. The emphasis on supporting Balinese craftsmanship extends throughout. All the textiles and baskets are made with local materials and natural dyes by a business in Ubud, Threads of Life, which supports

We also want to showcase to Indonesians themselves that we’re so rich in heritage.” Katamama’s restaurant, Movida, is an outpost of the popular Spanish restaurant from Melbourne and serves seriously tasty tapas at lunch and dinner—Wagyu tartar on a sesame crisp, air-dried beef with a poached egg and truffle foam, and Javanese chicken cooked in a Josper oven were standouts. or jasmine prasetio, art is life, especially in her role as Director in Asia and Indonesia Country Manager for Sotheby’s— one of the oldest and largest auction houses in the world. She also promotes Indonesian art globally, which is why this August is an important month both for her and for the art community as it will see local art come to the fore over two huge events. One of these is Art Stage Jakarta, which marks the international art fair’s brand’s first foray into Indonesia and which will highlight the country as a major player on the global art map. “Indonesians have a wide range of appreciation for art from all over the world,” Jasmine says. “And it is so easy to fall in love with works by Indonesian artists.” She goes on to note that although Indonesia has a rich culture and history when it comes to collectors, patrons, artists’ havens and creativity, not many collectors outside the country know much about its art. This is changing, however: “In 2007, we started seeing international recognition through our auction platform,” she says. “The market steadily grew and expanded thanks to this exposure.” Jasmine says that this has been the result of a collective effort from various people including as well as art groups, curators, galleries, collectors, journalists, corporations and more. “It takes a nation to get to where we are now, and the journey is only going to get more exciting,” Jasmine says. “What is important now is to engage more people—not necessarily to be involved, but at least to be aware.” A lot of people, however, find that the idea of art is something very distant and intimidating. Changing perspectives and ways of thinking is needed to see art as a part of everyday life. Without realising it, she said, we are living with art every day when we enjoy food, beautiful interiors and architecture, fashion and more. “We have to break away from the preconceived idea that one has to own art in order to appreciate and benefit from it,” she says. “When you see the world through art, you are provoked to think out of the box.” Jasmine’s love for art started when she was a 9-year-old girl who visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam with her grandmother. “I remember feeling both amazed and fascinated,” Jasmine says. “I thought there was a darkness in Rembrandt’s works that was daunting, but at the same time the works were so intriguing that I could not get them out of my mind.” She then tells us about her trip to see James indonesia tatler . august 2016

Turrell’s retrospective exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. “His works are mostly art that you can’t own because the medium is lighting,” Jasmine says. A whole room of changing lights was a completely inspiring and rejuvenating experience that changed the way Jasmine sees art and the world. “Our understanding is limited by our knowledge at a given time, but through art, we can see that possibilities are infinite,” she says. “We just have to find the right perspective.” Art also connects people globally and instills appreciation and awareness, which is important to any culture, says the young leader. “An art fair is a great example of art uniting people from all walks of life,” she says. “You can see an entrepreneur, a Fortune 500 CEO, a banker, a bohemian curator, an auctioneer, a young art enthusiast, and an artist at the same time.” “It is also an amazing platform from which to launch many other things, like the work undertaken by Bono, the lead singer with U2, who is a big art collector and philanthropist,”Jasmine says. “He uses art to do good works, such as collaborating with Sotheby’s in a charity auction for RED—a non-profit organisation dedicated to fight AIDS in Africa.” To close our chat, Jasmine suggests some small steps to incorporate art into one’s life by “opening our minds to new experiences, attending more art events, galleries, fairs and museums to see different forms of art, and then researching those you like or feel connected to”. She urges people to not be shy and to ask questions and utilise the Internet or read books. Questions will be answered by other people, and new understandings and experiences will be born according to Jasmine. “Our taste evolves, which is inevitable,” she says. “We shouldn’t stop growing and be afraid of change.”

It’s hard to choose a favourite city, but we always have such a good time in Positano. Besides the stunning views, friends and family join us there each year. I look forward to this time— it’s become a tradition and a moment to reset. The landscape is so unique. My husband Balthazar’s parents were married there, so it has an important history for us as well. I always remember to bring a caftan from my collection, APL trainers, Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream, a bathing suit from Eres and a Patricia Underwood hat for the sun—it’s hot when we travel in late June. I also pack a good book: I picked up Patti Smith’s M Train for the next trip. We usually start our days with a long lunch, then take the boat out. There are so

many small towns along the Amalfi Coast for day trips. Wherever we go, I like to learn a bit about the local artisans and artists. During the day, we swim in the ocean or go hiking. After a hike up the hill overlooking the coast, you can visit the Birds of Prey Experience. The guide there works with local hawks, owls and vultures. You can put on gloves and hold them. It’s a cool experience for the kids and really fascinating. We always stay at Le Sirenuse. It’s high on the cliffside and overlooks the coast. Our good friends Antonio and Carla Sersale own the hotel and it has been in his family for years. They have created an atmosphere that is both elegant and sophisticated without lacking in charm and family history. I have had some of my favourite meals at the hotel’s restaurant, La Sponda. The local Mediterranean dishes are so fantastic, definitely a highlight of our time in Italy. And we love shopping at the hotel’s Emporio Le Sirenuse, stocked with Carla’s beautiful handembroidered pillows and caftans. After a late dinner at La Sponda, I like to look out at the three islets of Li Galli, which you can see from our bedroom. The legend is they used to be inhabited by sirens. They are so beautiful and enchanting… and my thoughts drift as I fall asleep. indonesia tatler . august 2016
