PUBLISHER'SNOTEAPRIL2016

It almost feels like I don't need to keep bragging about all the great things happening in our city, these days. If I don't personally see you out enjoying what Lake Charles has to offer, I read about it on my Facebook newsfeed. It?s a great feeling, but I don?t know exactly what I should write in these notes anymore? We'll always have something new and exciting to showcase in the magazine, but these editor?s notes were special for me. They were like reading bedtime stories to my children; I never knew exactly when to stop because I can't tell when you're asleep and I?m pretty sure most of my humor went unnoticed. I just have to accept that you're all grown up and pretty soon you'll be moving out of the house. No matter what happens, just know that I will always be proud of you.

Steve Jobs had John Lennon. Albert Einstein had Mark Twain. I have Steve McQueen. McQueen has everything the men of today need when it comes to being awesome. He didn?t take no shit, stood for what he believed in, and demanded respect. When it comes to waking up and setting out to accomplish my day, I put my desert shoes on just like everybody else: one foot at a time. Nature doesn?t care about you. It will try to kill you any chance it gets and when it only maims you, you?ve got to find the strength to march onward.

Calvin asked me to talk about "local art and stuff" in this note, but I?m going to talk about him instead. I think the reason Calvin and I get along so well is because he has what I like to call a ?Get Shit Done? outlook on life. Like most people who grew up without the safety of a stable home, Calvin learned early on that if he wants something done, he's going to have to do it himself. He wanted to be a writer, so he wrote. He wanted to own a magazine, so he did. He likes old homes, so he lived in some. He never had a dad, so he became a great one? at 18, while simultaneously marrying the the love of his life and graduating from college. He was building houses when kids his age were learning about their bodies to vintage National Geographic magazines. I have yet to see a situation he hasn?t been able to walk, work, or sell himself out of. He is the underdog actors pretend to be in his favorite movies. He also looks a little bit like Steve McQueen; a husky version of Steve McQueen. He has seen more than his fair share of rejection in life, but he doesn't give a shit; he just keeps moving forward. When we lost the final phase of funding for Exposure Magazine, we experienced a flood of financial woes. But Calvin wasn't about to let his dream die because of money. He kept operations running for months with nothing more than a telephone and a little tenacity. When that wasn?t enough, he cut the office, print and salaries out of our budget, giving us a few more months. And when I had to get another job so I could keep my home, Calvin built and published the magazine all by himself? without pay.. for the past two months. Calvin is one of the greatest friends you could have. Unless you have a friend that makes sure you have all the necessary video footage for Guinness Book to recognize your world record. But you?d be surprised how picky those damn Irish can be. I'm honored to call him my friend and I'll always be grateful for the opportunity he gave me with Exposure Magazine.

Having a dream isn?t a blessing. As a constant dreamer I find myself perpetually making plans and forcing myself to work toward those goals like an OCD riddled meth addict. It?s not an easy trip for those in my life who find themselves on the ride, but I owe my success to the road warriors at my side. My wife/ queen, Megan, pushes, drags, and kicks me to make sure I stay true to my dreams. My friends, Warren, Jordan, Jared, Kirk, and Andy all pretend to look up to and believe in me in what feels like an attempt to motivate and encourage. My supporters, Dave Evans, Jay Marque, Priest Magby, Butch Ferdinandsen, Kathy and Paige Vidrine, Chris Culotta, Trey Litel, Martin Battles, Rick Nyberg, Marsh Buice, Craig Doland, George Swift, Cody and Ashley Cahanin, The Ellenders, Greg and Tara Hairr, Trip and LeNae Goolsby, Mike Harmison, Nikki Sue Alston, Renee Smith, Brian Pitre, Chris Huff, and many others are constantly contributing to ensure that I continue to push forward with my dreams. Just like the great Steve McQueen, I, too, know when to be grateful. Though times have been hard, and things haven?t always looked so great, Exposure Magazine?s future in bringing weird and funny stories to our wonderful readers. Even if there are thousands upon thousands of you, I appreciate each and every one of you individually. Without the readers, we have no magazine. Just an unread blog of some kind. McQueen didn?t even know what a blog was. He liked magazines, and he would have loved Exposure Magazine or the idea of kicking my ass for creating it. Either of which would be an honor. Money is nice when it comes to paying bills and buying things, sure, but it isn?t the dream. Money only serves as a means to an end. I never see myself being the rich guy on your block who walks around wearing golf shoes and neckties; I?m the guy who is more interested in hearing what you?ve got to say. I?m interested in stories and storytellers. I want to live in a world full of dreamers striving until their last breath to see them come to fruition. In a world where there is only way...onward and upward.

Thanks for everything,

I love you all,

Warren Bujol, Editor-in-Chief Exposure Magazine

THANKYOU,MR.VIC By Marsh Buice

When my daughter MacKenzie says her prayers at night, I let her free flow whoever and whatever she wants to pray for. One night as she was praying, she prayed for a name that I?d never heard before: ?Mr. Vic.? When I asked her who ?Mr. Vic? was, she told me that he was the janitor at her school. ?I?m praying for him, because he?s always nice to me,? she said. The other day Mack forgot her lunch, so I told her I would drop it off on my way to work. With only a few minutes to spare, I rushed into her school and placed her Lunchable on the table next to the lunchroom entrance alongside of a half dozen other kids who had also forgotten their lunch. As I whirled around, the man mopping the school?s floors stopped swaying the mop from side to side and, with a big, toothy grin, asked me how was I doing. In a rush, I smiled back and told him I was doing fine and in turn, asked him how he was doing, but I didn?t have time nor the inclination to wait for his answer. As I waved goodbye to the ladies in the school?s front office it hit me ? the man I had just spoken to in the hallway was Mr. Vic.

Turning around I walked back down the hallway and asked him, ?Are you Mr. Vic?? he smiled and said that he was and as I shook his hand I said, ?Thank you for what you do, Mr. Vic.?

with a certain others, and are so seemingly obsessed with who we can step on, beat out, or crossover in our quest for a title, that we?ve lost sight of the most impactful part of our lives: our position.

Stopping his mop, he pridefully looked around and said, ?Oh, I?m just trying to keep it looking good around here.?

One day you could find yourself wearing a title, if you don?t already, that you don?t care for. Maybe you?re working for someone who you feel is inferior to your skills and expertise, or perhaps you?re being asked to shoulder more responsibility with no more pay. It?s conceivable that you find yourself standing in the ashes of a once promising career ? one that for years you climbed the ladder of success, literally sacrificing everything ? only to find yourself today back on the bottom rung having to start all over again.

?No,? I said, ?Thank you for what you do while you?re here.? I went on to tell him how my daughter prayed for him and that I appreciated how nice he was to her. ?Sir,? he said, ?I?ve been here a long time, but I?m not here for the money ? I?ve been offered opportunities to work at other places for way more money, but I don?t feel like that?s the position I?m supposed to be in. Maybe one day, but right now, I?m right where I?m supposed to be. My position is right here with these kids.? Life is a blur and then we die. It becomes a blur because we?re so focused on titles that we give no thought at all to our position in life. We?re so fixated on the words printed below our name on our business card, so hellbent on trying to schmooze with certain people, so adamant about rubbing elbows

Ground Zero is where most people stall in life and ask, ?Why?? ?Why was I passed over for this promotion?? ?Why am I the one singled out to do more work while others stand around and get the credit?? ?Why did injustice prevail and ruin my life?? People who ask ?Why?? park in life and become bitter. The better question to ask is, ?What do I do while I?m in this position??

If you work for someone who you feel is inferior to your level of expertise and knowledge, your job is to make them look better. You have to understand this one position is not the end game in life ? unless you allow it to be. Use your vantage point to not only shore up their areas of weaknesses but also to gain a bird?s eye education into the pressures and decisions that they must make on a daily basis. If they?re poor at building relationships, you help build it for them; if they?re unorganized, you keep them on task; if they?re short sighted, you help them set the long-term vision. Stop competing for their title and begin completing their position. Not only will you earn her trust, but also you?ll build the morale of the entire store. Remember, you?re teaching those who work under you how they should think and act. If you want it done to you, do it to others; if you want it done for you, do it for others. If you keep getting volunteered for more work, shut up and do it. It?s been said that if you want something done, give it to a busy person. Don?t think like those who want to get the most for doing the least. Learning and teaching a new skill keeps

Waitr AppDelivers: TwistedCooks By Calvin Tyler Photography by Daniel Edwards, Waitr Inc.

Driving up to Bourbonz Bar on Ryan St. at 9 a.m., I find Priest Magby outside, focused and in motion. Today is the start of a new chapter for the restaurant that resides behind Bourbonz. Today is the day the Waitr team will photograph Twisted Cooks?entire menu, and within a few weeks all of the delicious food they have to offer will be available for delivery via the Waitr app. It wasn?t that long ago that if you lived in Lake Charles your options for food delivery were nil to none. The exceptions were pizza, wings, and maybe Chinese food if the restaurant?s policy on delivery hadn?t changed to ?we don?t do delivery anymore? status. Now, with the advent of the almighty Waitr: you can discover, order, eat. Giving smaller towns such as ours the ability to eat our favorite food whenever and wherever we want is so interesting to someone such as myself who grew up in the local area my entire life. The Exposure team has been using the app since before there were any restaurants on the app to order from. Since those humble days of starvation, the Waitr app now has 73 individual menus you can order from, thus giving you and the business owners who get on the app the power to do business virtually anywhere. This is what Twisted Cooks plans to do; bring their delicious entrees directly to wherever you are, by way of polite and attentive Waitr delivery drivers who have never run over my dog. Inside of Bourbonz I meet Daniel Edwards, Lead Photographer of Waitr, setting up his equipment to capture the salivating glory that is the Twisted Cooks menu. While carefully fine-tuning his white balance and correcting his lighting I leave Daniel to check in on the boys in the kitchen. Slaving away, both Priest, Gary Underwood, and Greg Macintosh are cooking the entire menu for today?s photo shoot. I giggle as I see the amount of food being prepared and Gary let?s out a roar of laughter and says, ?Hope you brought your appetite!? These men are in the zone, nothing standing between them and their dream of feeding people their food. I get the feeling that this date

BIRDSANDBEES, OPTIMIZEDHRTPLEASE! By Dr. Henry Goolsby

Well, its spring! I was actually thinking about spring fever and the glorious rebirth of our sexual drives and social interactions as the inspiration for this issue. The problem with drawing on my memories here is that my awesome, loving, and beautiful wife, LeNae, threatened to torture me un-naturally and then leave me for the beaches of Florida should I bring up any memories of my college and medical school years. That said, I am still inspired by the subject, as it is near and dear to me and my current practice where I am actively involved in optimizing male and female Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Dr. Tr ip Goolsby and the team of Infinite Health Integr ative M edicine Center ar e dedicated to inspir ing and em pow er ing our patient-par tner s to achieve tr anscendent health by pr oviding excellent patient-centr ic integr ative health car e that em br aces the m ind, body, and soul. Yes spring fever, although more recently attributed to the improvement of the symptoms related to S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder) that occurs when winter's environmental restrictions resolve, it has historically been related to the blooming of hormonal enhancements that accompany the vasodilatory response to warmer weather. This response then allows more of nature's hormonal gifts to spring into action with improved energies and humor of all types...ahem. The effectuating hormones are not just related to the effects of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, as many might think. Many of the dominant hormones, as well as some important lesser players, and specific hormone related nutrients, are involved in this optimized hormonal environment. More importantly, the effects of the combined hormonal environment that are manifest is of such a nature that, if taken to an optimized level by someone trained to do so, has been shown to help resolve, and ultimately prevent, many of our chronic medical dilemmas. So, where do we begin this analysis? Well, I like the image of spring fever and its youthful determinants that drive our sense of well-being as the norm for optimization, as do my peers in age management and integrative medicine. After all, the energy of "Spring Break" has a history that is known to all of us and can drive our not as youthful imaginations to create the picture of these energies, to wit what we aspire to when we are in our more "mature" years. With that image in mind (oh my), how does that hormonal environment affect our health when we apply it to an altered (read older) infrastructure? First, a clarified picture of what an optimum level represents will be helpful. Optimal levels are typically stricter - more youthful hormonal or nutrient levels most often associated with improved survival, quality of life and less disease risk. For example, a normal blood glucose level allows for anything lower than 100mg/ dl. An optimum blood glucose level requires that glucose is less than 86mg/ dl. Diabetes is defined as the blood glucose of 126mg/ dl or greater. Why do we want a consistent blood glucose level of less than 86mg/ dl (I can hear the objections now...). Well, it might be because there are 40% fewer heart attacks in the population that maintains their

DowntownIs WheretheArt Is By Calvin Tyler

Lots and lots of coverage has been given and shared in regards to Lake Charles?local artists as of late. These are exciting times to live in our city, and seeing the scenery brightened up by painter people such as Danny and Morgan Allain, Jeremy Price, Eric Jessen, Ben Von Duke, Erica Shaw Nelson, Daneisha Davis-Harger, Jock McGregor, Scott Hebert, Ned Cappel, Fred Stark, and all of SWLArt is refreshing. The city is teaming with masters of the pallet, and so much so that the lack of stores selling nothing but berets is surprising to me. Historic Downtown Lake Charles seems to have finally realized that solid coats of paint covering an entire building is so 2013, and has gotten to familiarize itself with the brushstrokes of the natives. No longer does breathtaking artwork reside only on the inside of the century-old structures; now, it can be seen adorning the exteriors as well. Murals- from massive in size, to just above the door- are spreading across the little Artists?District of Lake Charles faster than chicken pox in a 1991 daycare. The imagination of local boys and girls can be seen from almost every angle, making this area one to visited and appreciate. We, here at Exposure, get hundreds of emails each month from people asking about our art community. Most of which come from folks who are looking to accept jobs during our booming expansion, and are coming from hip places like Austin, San Antonio, San Diego, Portland, Buffalo, New Orleans, Daytona Beach, St. Louis, Wichita Falls, and even San Francisco. You might be wondering why I included Wichita Falls into a list that?s supposed to represent the cool kids of cities, and I would respond in person with, ?As Wichita Falls, so falls Wichita Falls.? Anyway, the point is that people are looking at us like they want us to sit at the cool kids table during lunch, and that a good chunk of that reason is because one of the prettiest parts of our city is now showing. The art and the people who create it. Keep it going, LC. You?re doing great!

BATMANVSUPERMAN:DAWNOFJUSTICE By Calvin Tyler

I, being a fan of both the Batman and Superman, still have not seen this movie. I know I know. You?re probably thinking that this article was written way before the movie ever came out, but, this is Exposure Magazine, and we like to keep our readers on the edge of their seats at all times with our professionalism. Plenty of you have probably seen the film by now and already have your own thoughts. I?m just going to go out on a limb in this article and take wild stabs at what I think probably happens in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here it goes. Before the first trailer hit the web I gathered from the title that the titular characters would fight each other. That, or maybe it was some new law firm in town and I was just too nerdy to pay attention to such small details. After the first YouTube screening of the first trailer, I understood that Bruce Wayne (totally not Batman) ran into the dust cloud of a crumbling building to save a little girl from the destruction caused by Superman (totally not Clark Kent) fighting the equally powerful General Zod. considering that !!!SPOILER ALERT!!! Bruce?s parents were killed by violence, and that the terrorist attacks of 9/ 11 were also pretty violent, so Bruce would not like the idea of a super ?man? flying around and being all indestructible and unhuman-like. While Bruce was pondering his options, Superman somehow broke the neck of the other indestructible nonhuman, Zod, and probably

flew away to spend time with his RoboDad in the Arctic. Being that Bruce was in Metropolis during that time 37 skyscrapers fell to the ground, I assume that Wayne Enterprises had some business dealings in the city that day, or the cities of Gotham and Metropolis are eerily close in proximity. Either way: What a crappy time to visit. This gives Bruce a reason to visit Metropolis city limits during the timeline of this movie as he is an 端ber billionaire not unlike that of Donald Trump. The only difference is that he has better hair and isn?t using his money to sell books and create a reality television empire like the Kardashians. But, not unlike that of Donald, Bruce wants to deport this alien bastard back to his uninhabitable home in any way possible. We?ve all seen Lex Luther in the promos acting like the Riddler, and most of you have already seen the movie, and this is where I could see him becoming intricate to the plot. LexCorp is based out of Metropolis, and Lex Luther is considered a bad guy even though I don?t recall him ever spilling millions of gallons of oil in the Gulf of Mexico. This means that Lex would most definitely have not only the resources to retrieve the body of Zod and any intel but the motive. So, Lex collects the body of Zod and any other little artifacts (Kryptonite) that are related to anything Superman-y, keeps them at
