Following Your Heart? Or, A Paycheque?
I
t’s the million dollar question - Do you work for passion or do you work for money? To start with, there is no absolute answer to this question, no definitive conclusion, no right or wrong. In an ideal world, we would all love to be following our hearts and pursuing our passions, filling our days doing all the things that we love and going to bed at night with a sense of completion and fulfilment. But, in reality, the bills need to be paid, mortgage or rent commitments need to be met and those orthodontics visits are simply not going to take care of themselves. So where do you draw the line and decide between doing what you love or what you need to do to pay the bills? Or, is there a way you can possibly do both and how?
Whether you choose to pursue a career that provides passion over profit or profit over passion really depends upon what your own individual price tag for happiness is. A person can be happy without a high income just like a person with all the money in the world can be miserable. The pursuit of passion vs. profit is a very personal choice and depends upon the price tag that each individual places on their own happiness. A highly creative individual is not going to find fulfilment and satisfaction as a bank clerk and might be willing to forfeit job security in order to take a job more inline with their creative skillset and which fulfils their passion. By the same token, an individual might forfeit doing something they love in order to pursue a career based on financial gain, as they value the benefits of a high income over the benefits of working in an industry that they are passionate about. yourcareermagazine.com

Let’s take a look at salary vs. job happiness – the pros and cons! Passion over pay: the pros ● Work is not a chore ● Passion fuels higher achievement levels ● Personal fulfilment and career satisfaction ● Strong work ethic Passion over pay: the cons ● Financial insecurity ● Job insecurity ● Lack of boundaries between work and home life ● Personal insecurity if success is not achieved Pay over passion: the pros ● Financial security ● Job security ● Less stress when bills need to be paid ● Ability to plan for the future Pay over passion: the cons ● Lack of stimulation ● Routine and boredom – sense of being in a “rut” ● Inability to reach new career highs ● Risk of burnout Deciding whether to take a job that you are passionate about or to follow the money trail is a decision that is easier for some than others. are, you will end up with a high paying job and that you can tick both the passion and profit box. But for others, their passion isn’t as likely to be profitable, for example, artists, musicians and teachers. Their decision about which path to pursue is a little trickier. At the end of the day all the passion in the world is of little use if it does not put food on the table or pay the electricity bill. For some lucky people, passion can also lead to profit, but for most, passion must be something that is pursued once the bills have been paid!

DO YOU NEED A JOB CHANGE
OR A NEW CAREER? with Christine Khor
We often hear the phrase “work to live, don’t live to work”, but it is not always that simple. According to recruitment expert and career advisor Christine Khor, a thriving career is paramount to a fulfilled, satisfied life. “Your career not only pays your bills, but it creates your sense of purpose, your sense of self-worth, your ability to add value to the community and more.”
8
yourcareermagazine.com
No matter your job, in order to progress in work (and life), there comes a time when change is necessary. This could be within the same industry or the brave may take on something completely different in a bid to shake up their world and truly go after their dreams. Reasons for seeking change are many and varied, seeking growth and challenge is a major factor, as is seeking greater responsibility and, of course, remuneration. Personal grievances can also create the desire to move on, especially when they are with management or close colleagues, and issues within the culture of the organisation or job insecurities can get many people thinking about how they spend their workdays. However, changing jobs or careers can be daunting, and despite the positives for seeking a shift, many people simply choose to stay safe and maintain the status quo. “When wanting to make a significant change such as changing industry or job function, the first thing people will need to get used to is rejection. Making big changes is not always easy and takes effort,” Christine said. “Unfortunately, although organisations like to talk the talk around innovation, taking risk, creative thought etc, A lot of the time when they are looking to hire someone for a role, they often end up hiring the person “who has done it before”, not the person who wants to do it, could potentially do it, or would like to do it.” Significant change may also require sacrifice from the individual. This may mean a

sacrifice in title, perceived position or remuneration. “If you really want the change, what are you willing to sacrifice?” is a question Christine often asks. “When moving to a different industry, the reality is that you may not actually have the skills. In your current role, you deserve the seniority and pay due to your experience and skills, but in a new industry or job function, you are going to be slower and they will need to teach you”. “However, I often find that when someone takes a step back for their dream role, they can often move forward more quickly. This is because they already have the years of experience in aspects such as management, negotiation and influencing skills, as well as a wealth of life experience to add to the mix.” If money is an issue, it is crucial to evaluate honestly how important the pay is to you and whether you can live off a reduced wage in order to move forward. Some may be discouraged to take a step back because of ego, but Christine encourages people in this situation to think carefully about what their personal ‘success’ is and what is more important – purpose, culture, learning, challenge and opportunity, for example, versus money for rewards rather than fulfillment. “If you are staying in a role, or with an organisation you are not passionate about, but you are staying because of the money, aren’t you going backwards in your life, just so you don’t go backwards in your pay?”
10
yourcareermagazine.com
As a coach, Christine advises anyone who is looking for a job or career change to resist reacting out of fear, take the emotion out of the decision and look at the hard facts. It is important to understand the reasons you are seeking change. “I always ask people, are they running from something, or are they running to something. Are they seeking a change because they are running away from the existing, or is everything great but they need a new beginning? What’s really important when you are making any of these changes is understanding your motivations and not too quickly jumping to a conclusion that, for example, it’s my boss’ fault and if I go to a new place, I’m going to get a great boss. The reality is, that may not happen,” says Christine. “I really encourage people to think broadly when it comes to a job or career change. Many people think the only way is up, whereas really you can go many places within an organisation.” A sideways or horizontal move, rather than leaving an organisation, can be an effective way to enhance your career and provide yourself with a new challenge and learn new skills. This is a great option if your motivations are around personal development or avoiding becoming staid in your current role. For those aiming for leadership roles or perhaps starting their own company, learning each different area of a business is very beneficial in the long run as you can gain important insights into each facet of business, such as sales, marketing, manufacturing or HR.
At the end of the day a fulfilling career does not happen by accident – it takes planning, commitment, bravery, self-awareness, constant learning, risk and sacrifice. If you are yet to find that job or career that suits your values, needs and goals, research what you need to do and then create a plan to get there. “I’m in my third career, so I’m a big advocate to it, but it needs to be something you are drawn to and not changing because you are running from something,” she says. “I’m a big believer that anything is possible, but it depends on what level of sacrifice you are willing to make to get there, such as time you are willing to put into that industry or extra study, are you willing to take a pay cut or are you willing to volunteer to get extra experience? If you are passionate about trying something new, these are the key things that will get you there.” To help answer these questions, Christine recommends you spend up to an hour each month thinking about your career and take it seriously. Jot down how you are feeling about your work, where you would like to be, what barriers to change you are facing and what steps you are taking to get you closer to your goals.
limbo and unsure of where or how you can change you career for the better. “Be true to yourself. Sift through all of the opinions and advice and work out what works best for you. Pick and choose what suits you.”

DISCOVER YOUR TRUE SELF
By Jacquelyn Brooks
T
o truly know yourself is one of the most important skills you can possess. Knowing your true self and who you are below the surface level, will help you in every aspect of your life. You’ll suddenly realize what it is you need to do, instead of looking for permission from others. You are able to bypass immense frustration caused by spending your time on the wrong things. And while most of us are aware the importance knowing ourselves serves us in areas of our life, such as, relationships and passion projects, knowing yourself can indefinitely benefit you in the workplace. Work is a place to be serious and focused, but it’s also a place you should feel comfortable and at yourcareermagazine.com

ease within your general surroundings. Being yourself is one of the most fundamental aspects of being comfortable, which is why it’s so important to identify that self. So many people feel they can’t let their true personalities show at the workplace, but that’s not entirely true. Knowing who you are can ensure you are in the right workplace to begin with. It will also lead you to be happier in your role, gain more work friends, be a better leader, and most likely lead you to advance and improve. While it’s difficult to determine what your true self is, it isn’t impossible.
4 Ways to Discover Your True Self 1
Realize who you are, not who you want to be.
We’ve all heard and probably been tempted by the “fake it until you make it” mentality and there is nothing wrong with it! Sometimes all it takes is walking the walk and talking the talk to ultimately get where you want to be in your career and life. Just don’t use it as excuse to back out from truly discovering who you are. I used to read articles that laid out everything successful people did to ensure they are staying successful, and I thought I was required to follow these practices in order to be successful myself. Successful people wake up at 5 am, eat a big breakfast, workout first thing in the morning, etc. You
14
yourcareermagazine.com
know the list! But I sat down with myself one morning when I realized these habits were not helping me. They were actually making me cranky and unproductive. Now I wake up around 7 am, when my body wakes itself up. I practice a modified intermittent fasting and don’t eat until about 1 pm because I find I’m most productive as soon as I wake up and before I eat. Learning about my body, my habits, and myself has led me to be more productive at home and at work.
2
Assess what you’re good at…and what you’re not good at.
The reality is we aren’t good at everything. You shouldn’t quit before you’ve even tried, but once you’ve been in ample time and effort into a task without succeeding, maybe it’s time to delegate that task and move onto the next. When your actions do nothing but drain you, it may be time to focus your energy elsewhere. Your strengths will show who you are. And at work, becoming frustrated with a task better suited for someone else will prohibit you from shining in the areas your skills and talents lie. Once you give yourself permission to focus on these tasks instead, you will find you’re less stressed, and your coworkers and bosses will notice as well.
3
Decide what you’re passionate about.
Sometimes our work doesn’t fully align with what we consider to be our true passions. And that’s okay! The bills have to be paid either way. But following a passion of any kind is a good thing. If you’re following a passion regarding work, that’s great. If you’re following a passion for life, that’s also great. But finding where your passion lies is crucial in determining the best way to delegate your time. For example, I was recently applying to jobs and realized I wasn’t particularly excited about anything I was seeing. So,I sat down and jotted down a list of things I was passionate about. When I realized most of them were cause specific, I decided to focus my energies into companies that fit into those passions. Whatever the passion is, you may need to pay more attention to it in your daily life, both at work or outside of work. Passion produces excitement and effort, and continuous effort produces amazing results.

should it be considered definite. However, their feedback could steer you in the direction of discovering your true self and force you to ask questions about yourself you’d have skimmed over previously.
4 Questions To Ask Yourself To Help Determine Your True Self If you’re having a difficult time deciding what your true self looks like, try starting by asking yourself these four questions: ● If money weren’t a factor, what would you do with your time? ● What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment to date? ● What do you do when no one is watching? ● If you had $100,000 to donate to a cause, who would you donate? Of course, these are not the only questions you should ask yourself, but they are a good place to start to determine where your interests lie.
Ask for feedback.
Sometimes hearing what others have to say about you is a helpful practice. Try asking your coworkers or immediate superiors the strengths they feel you need to further develop or the weaknesses you should work on. Their opinion won’t be perfect nor

COMMONWEALTH BANK One of Australia’s largest financial services firms, Commonwealth Bank is really kicking goals when it comes to employment. The bank is particularly lauded for the strides it’s making when it comes to gender equality. Around 58 percent of the workforce is female, with more than 44 percent of these employees sitting at manager level and above. The bank has created an in-house financial wellbeing program for staff members, too. Through this, employees can supplement their knowledge about personal finances and be better prepared to manage their expenses, make progress achieving longterm goals, and prepare for unexpected events. Furthermore, while close to 70 percent of Commonwealth’s workforce have flexible working arrangements, which certainly helps to make the bank more appealing to employees, when staff members do spend time in the main offices, they also have access to perks such as onsite wellness centres, retreat spaces, and neighbouring childcare centres.
PWC AUSTRALIA Giant professional services firm PwC makes the top employers’ list most years due to its decision to let employees decide what time they get to work. It is also a preferred employer because it provides opportunities for staff members to have short-term or long-term secondments to international
offices. In addition, the company allows workers to receive 18 weeks of parental leave without having to serve out a minimum term of employment first. Employees get their birthday day off each year; can take a public holiday break on another day if they choose; and can pick the physical space where they will work each day, according to the tasks and activities they need to complete. The firm also has a Lego room on site to encourage collaboration, and it places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion.
DELOITTE AUSTRALIA Management consultancy firm Deloitte Australia entices some employees to join its ranks because of its commitment to helping investigate and address some of the world’s biggest challenges and hot topics. This includes things like environmental damage to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the impact of artificial intelligence. The company’s culture is also seen positively. Workers get to engage in things like free cooking classes, volunteering opportunities, world-class learning programs, indigenous cultural awareness training, and holistic wellbeing programs. Plus, flexibility is a key focus. All employees receive 18 weeks’ paid parental leave, and Deloitte has created a 20-week return-towork pilot program for people going back to work after parental leave. This program includes mentoring, training and support.

MACQUARIE GROUP If you’re looking to work somewhere you can indulge passions and hobbies which don’t relate to your job, look at Macquarie Group career options. At the company employees are encouraged to pursue their interests via a variety of groups and classes on topics like gardening, singing, photography and more. The organisation also provides workers with perks such as yoga classes and hot breakfasts. There are kids clubs for parents who need to keep their children busy while they’re at work, too.
KPMG AUSTRALIA For those looking to get a new job within a business that takes mental health seriously, KPMG Australia should be at the top of the list. At KPMG, mental health is seen as a core pillar, and the firm has launched numerous initiatives to encourage employees to talk more openly about health issues, debunk myths, and give those suffering from challenges accesses to real resources. The business has also been striving to create modern workplaces. All staff have been relocated to new buildings around the country in recent times.

PENG JOON:
LOOKING FOR A JOB?
CREATE YOUR OWN!
P
eng Joon makes no secret of the fact that his incredible career began out of desperation. As a university student, he struggled to pay his way through the necessities of life, then when he did finally graduate, he found himself in a very unsatisfying job with little pay to show for his efforts. Astute and quick to learn, he knew there had to be a better way forward.
20
yourcareermagazine.com
During this time, Peng Joon stumbled across the story of another person who had made a fortune out of something they loved – computer games. So, Peng Joon wrote his own 32-page guide on a popular game that had almost cost him his university degree due to the sheer number of hours he played it - World of Warcraft. He set up a website demonstrating how to play.
Editor In Chiefs Thai and Iris with Peng Joon at one of Peng’s events.
Through this process he realised passion and determination, coupled with a little extra knowledge and skill, could turn the online world into something very profitable. While crushing student debt and low-paid entry jobs are a common story, what is so unique about Peng Joon, is that he used this drive to take a massive chance that many others would not dare. And, it paid off. He created his own success, on his terms, and is now a well-respected mentor, trainer, public speaker and leader in the field of online entrepreneurship.
From his World of Warcraft days, he has since built over 600 different websites across many genres and niches. He realised early on in his career that although online platforms were constantly evolving, what ultimately mattered across the board, was his messaging. Through working within this concept, he was successfully able to replicate his initial business success over and over, regardless of how technology and the way we worked evolved.

“Platforms always change. 15 years ago when Myspace was huge, no one predicted that Facebook would become what it is today. Just like 15 years from now, nobody can really predict what the next big platform is going to be. But, here’s the thing that we do know; we do know that if you are somebody with a great message, you will be able to take that message regardless of which platform is king, because the rest is all tactical,” Peng said.
concept through to working out social media and funnels, systems of operation and strategising for long-term gain, clients emerge with a thorough understanding of online entrepreneurship and the confidence and skills to succeed in a very competitive market. Peng Joon also speaks at many industry and special events to share his business knowledge and encourage others to be take a chance on themselves, just like he did.
“The first piece is understanding messaging. Once you understand messaging, you will be able to take that piece, regardless of what the platform evolves to.”
While skills and knowledge are undisputed cornerstones to business success, above all else, Peng Joon’s advice for anyone wanting to create their own job and tap into the exciting and constantly varied opportunities the world wide web provides is to just jump in.
Advancing technology also appears in many ways to be taking away career and business opportunity online, but this is not always the case, depending perception. Peng Joon encourages would-be online entrepreneurs to view the creation of more efficient bots and AI as a positive and embrace the efficiency they can provide. “As we become more effective and more efficient, ultimately what happens is personal effort is going to be a lot less upfront. That actually makes it a win for both customers as well as the online vendors. Time will simply become a lot more expensive as a result of bots and A.I. replacing a lot of the things humans do now,” he explained. Through his business, Smobble, Peng Joon and his team help a varied group of clients navigate their way through issues such as these and teach them how to monetise something they love. “Now is the time to experiment, now is the time to fail, now is the time you can afford to screw up, because this is the time the rest of the world has not walked all over your dreams and told you that you can’t do it just yet,” he said. “Now it the time to be bold, because your cost of failing is extremely low. Your cost of not doing it is at its all-time low, so for those of you entering the workforce right now, find something you absolutely love doing and become great at it.”

be very daunting to have to put yourself out there and interact with a range of individuals quite possibly with a great deal more career experience than you. Luckily, there are some simple tips to networking as a young professional that will help you to feel more comfortable as you begin the practice of building connections.
Tip #1: Mindset The most effective networking comes from the building of genuine relationships – not a business card exchange. When you embark upon the networking journey look at it as a way to create authentic relationships with people and not simply finding new business contacts. Approach the networking process like you are building friendships so look for common ground and interests and invest in creating long term sustainable relationships. Tip #2: Keep your
connections close As a young professional you might have a smaller network than others who have been in the network for longer and that’s ok. It’s all about working with what you have. Initially, your network will most likely comprise of family, friends, teachers, professors and co-workers. It is really important to look after these connections and to keep in contact with people who know you, your work and capabilities. With social media it is really easy to keep in contact with people so make sure that you do because you never know when an old friend might be able to open up a new door for you. Tip #3: Use social media to
your advantage and create an online presence Social media can be a golden tool in the world of networking. It’s an effective way to get to know contacts and to easily keep in touch with like-minded people.
Recruiters often use social media platforms to get a feel for potential candidates and to look into their background, skills and experience so make sure that your online presence is up to date and reflective of the image that you want to present. Tip #4: Be careful what
you ask for
Whatever you do don’t ask anyone you know for a job – that is a big networking no no! Your network should be used to build relationships and connections and establish a positive rapport with your contacts so that if in the future any opportunities present themselves then your contact will be happy to refer you. Tip #5: Use your time wisely Everyone knows the old saying that “time is money” and in the networking world this is very true. When utilising your network be mindful that people’s time is precious so use it sparingly and effectively. Make sure that you are organised and know what you want out of the exchange so that you make the most out of every opportunity. Tip #6: Be an effective listener One of the most effective skills that any polished networker has is to be a good listener. You learn more from listening than you do by talking so be sure to ask open-ended questions that allow your contact to share information and advice that you may find valuable.

Tip #7: Don’t be shy to ask
for suggestions on how to expand your network One of the main goals of networking is to branch out and expand your pool of contacts. Every person that you know knows hundreds of other people, some of which who might be a good fit for you so don’t be shy in asking for recommendations. Tip #8: Follow up The key to establishing a rapport with someone is to build on and cement the relationship and the key to this is in following up. If you see, hear or read of something that might be of interest to them let them know. Regularly touch base and keep things fresh and current. Contact is key! Tip #9: Mind your manners Don’t ever underestimate the power of good manners. Networking is all about creating genuine lasting relationships so make sure that you thank your connections for any help, advice or contacts they might provide you. Being humble, grateful and appreciative will take you a long way in the networking world. As with anything in life practice makes perfect so the more you network the better you will get at it. Remember at the end of the day the goal of networking is to build solid, lasting genuine relationships. Keep in mind these basic tips and hopefully they will help you to succeed in the networking world.

Taking the initiative to, not only be the best version of yourself that YOU can be, but to also encourage your fellow colleagues to do the same is actually much easier than it first may seem. Here are 7 easy and practical tips that will help you to inspire those you work with to be the best version of themselves:
1. Be an inspired leader: You can’t expect your teammates to be inspired and motivated if you are not so lead by example and get EXCITED about your work, your product or your business. If you want your fellow workers to be pumped about their work, then you need to set the tone, as enthusiasm is contagious!
2. Build relationships based on trust: For workers to get the most out of each other and to work together at optimum capacity, there must be the underlying foundation of trust in the relationship. Employees crave trust and for their team to have confidence in them. When people are shown that they are trusted then they typically work harder, do better and show higher level of motivation and initiative.
3. Provide a sense of belonging and purpose: Everyone wants to feel needed and like they add value, so make sure that your teammates feel like they are an important part of the business and that their work is valued and is making a difference. Encourage your fellow teammates to share their vision, ideas and thoughts with each other and

look at what is needed to make these ideas come to fruition. When everyone shares a similar vision and set of goals and are working together towards the same beneficial outcome it helps to create a sense of both belonging but also purpose which tends to bring out the best in every individual.
4. Eliminate fear: One of the most common obstacles to success is the fear of failure. Instil a sense of “you never know until you give it a go” in your team. Encourage your fellow team members to brave in sharing ideas, opinions and ideas. Help to create a work environment that supports and encourages thought sharing, creativity and acceptance. So many people have so much to offer but are crippled by a sense of fear of acceptance or ridicule. Eliminate that fear and your teammates will flourish.
5. Set clear standards: Don’t underestimate people’s ability and settle for subpar standards. Be clear in setting the standard of work that you feel is acceptable, achievable and that you would be proud of. Clearly communicate what this standard is and don’t ASSUME that fellow workers will understand the standards without explanation. Communication is the key to working together to achieve success and bringing out the best in each other.
6. Encourage each other to rise to the challenge: For people to reach their full potential they need to accept and embrace a challenge. Things may not always go as planned and there might be
mistakes and mishaps along the way but without a challenge you will never step out of your comfort zone and explore your full potential. Encourage a work environment where everyone feels supported both in their successes and in their failures as this will help to encourage all workers to participate in a wider variety of tasks and discover skills that they might not even know that they have.
7. Acknowledge and appreciate a job well done: Nothing inspires people to achieve and challenge themselves more than praise, compliments and an acknowledgment of success. Be generous with applause and appreciation when your fellow team members do well or achieve success. It is incredible how easily morale can be boosted when people are acknowledged for their achievements. Be specific in your praise and you will find that the positivity that comes with celebrating triumphs creates a happy work environment that will breed future success. The most important thing to remember when trying to inspire your team to be the best version of themselves is to simply lead by example and to treat them in the way that you like to be treated yourself. Good old fashion advice with remarkable results. You don’t need a magic wand or any self-help books, you simply need to adopt a positive mindset, promote trust, provide constant motivation, communicate clearly and celebrate success. These small little changes made here and there will do wonders to inspire your team and help them to be the very best version of themselves that they can be. yourcareermagazine.com
