From The Publisher This spring so far hasn’t been the most welcoming, weather-wise. I do have faith that it will arrive eventually! In the meantime, sit back with the new issue of Quirk to help take your mind off the chilly, windy days.

Volume 3 • Issue 3 • May - June 2014

www.readquirk.com Jean Van Kleek Photography: Jen Alston

I was very pleased to have had the opportunity to speak with Maureen Enns, an extremely talented artist, photographer and writer who recently launched her new book “Wild Horses, Wild Wolves”. Maureen’s work goes far beyond researching and writing about her subjects. She spent six years studying wild horses in their natural habitat. Maureen has intertwined her writing finesse with her photography and artwork to create a beautifully awe inspiring book that captures the spirit of the “wildies”. We share her fascinating journey and pictures with you. Downtown Lethbridge is home to a variety of unique shops. This issue, we feature “Fashionable Downtown Lethbridge”. These stores were each conceived by very creative, talented women with a desire to bring their specific niche and expertise to shops in Lethbridge that rival any major market. We’ve also included an article by Ryan, our roaming writer who is now in Vancouver. He shares his thoughts on what others perceive Lethbridge to be. It’s very interesting that some of the people he has met up with consider us to be ”exotic” and find farms, hoodoos, truck rides and open fields to be quite out of the ordinary. There is much more in store this issue, from profiles on business, to recipes and entrepreneurial ventures… so grab a cup of your favourite beverage, forget about the weather and enjoy!

THE ROAD IN BETWEEN

The Little Things in Life

Over the years I’ve learned to appreciate the small things that go my way each day, like cancelled meetings on impossibly busy days and times when I’m stressed out and a co-worker stops by my office with a funny story. Or the little everyday things you want out of life. For some quirky reason, when I’m doing my hair in the morning I’m thinking, I want the women in line behind me at the grocery store to look at the back of my head and think "Gee that woman has nice hair and highlights".

miss, like the time consuming task of In our pairing socks. In the winter crazy busy worlds, countless hours are spent pairing socks, spring and summer, no these moments are socks and such freedom on laundry day! Then there are small victories that times when luck plays a role, like when the blue top I bought encourage our was the blue I was trying to match! Who knew there were efforts to keep on that many shades of blue, it's just a crap shoot really. keeping on. Also the little seasonal things you don’t

while I shower, rolling around on the bedroom rug while I get dressed.

It's not so much that these times on their own shine bright, but they provide respite during times when By Sue Thomas the bills are due before payday arrives and the car needs new brakes. In our crazy busy worlds, these moments are small victories that encourage our efforts to keep on keeping on. I try not to let gratitude pass me by while waiting for the big lottery win or the perfect relationship or career. I purposely look for those small everyday gems that await my discovery. Sometimes, it's as simple as a half hour of undivided attention with a favorite person, or finding ten minutes of quiet time in a busy day, or taking a minute to tell someone how much I appreciate them.

This is the exercise of appreciating the little things, so that when the day comes to an end, I'm grateful that I do have nice hair and co-workers that I can laugh with. I’m grateful for sandal weather, and a dog to keep me company and the once in a blue moon when I get lucky in the color matching challenge. When the big things aren’t working out, I look for the little things. And in the end I realize, it’s the little things that count the most.

She Boutique

Opening She Boutique four years ago has not turned out the way I expected. It's even better!

Marijke Reitsma

After an extensive career in garment design and construction, leather clothing, accessories and jewellery, as well as restoring antique furniture and classic car interiors, it's very different being at the retail end. DOWNTOWN LETHBRIDGE The Jasmine Room

I have always been drawn to the building that now houses The Jasmine Room, as it has been in my family since 1918. The little turn of the century building had roots as my grandfather's grocery business (Wilson's Grocery) for about fifty years. Some of the old store fixtures counter, scale, display case are used in my present day shop. Years later, when my mother was going to sell the building, I convinced her otherwise. It would be an ideal location for a boutique and tearoom that I had been dreaming about for years. After some renovations, The Jasmine Room opened in 2001.

Kathleen Thomson

I have a love of antiques and beautiful things; design, colours, and flavours, and finally had a creative outlet. My goal is to have something unique for our customers. We have a lovely selection of fashions, accessories and home decor for today's fashionista, both for her home and herself. We carry April Cornell, Pinup Couture, Sourpuss, Ark Imports and Swarovski crystal designs, to name a few. When possible, I like to support local or Western Canadian suppliers and artisans. It is very rewarding to to design my own hand made jewellery, work on antiques, develop new soups and blend some of our own specialty teas. We like to think that The Jasmine Room offers a great experience - friendly service, lovely merchandise and a delicious cup of tea or lunch.

I feel blessed to have had the support of my mother for nine years, as well as all the wonderful staff and customers that frequent our place and make the Jasmine Room what it is today - an oasis away from the busy world in a great neighbourhood - a place where happiness blooms!

Intrigue Lingerie

Sometimes a great idea for a business comes from personal experience. Such was the case for us. After a trip to New York, where we were properly fit for a bra, we knew that the women of Lethbridge and area needed to experience what we experienced.

Every woman knows that buying intimate apparel can be a frustrating and sometimes disheartening experience. Finding the right size, the right style, the right fit – it’s no easy task, and all too often women walk away with the wrong items – or worse yet, walk out empty handed, giving up all together before finding something that might do.

Rita McArthur and  Colleen Armstrong

Ladies, take heart. Intrigue Lingerie Boutique is here to help make your next intimate apparel purchase a relaxed and successful experience. With an extensive range of manufacturers, styles, and sizes to choose from, plus a group of highly knowledgeable staff, Intrigue Lingerie Boutique takes all the stress and guesswork out of bra buying. You’re certain to find exactly what you need, and walk away feeling more confident and comfortable than you did walking in. What other shopping experience can offer that?

Intrigue Lingerie Boutique also carries a selection of sleepwear, shape wear, and maternity/nursing wear as well.

It’s hardly surprising to look back and realize how much technology keeps us moving; ground-breaking inventions, new time-savers, faster and better ways to work and play, the endless upgrading! But while the gadgets and appliances keep changing at an ever quicker pace, the reasons for having them remain the same. They enhance our lives. Art, music and film are ours at the touch of a button. They are more than the sum of their parts.

And so is Smith’s Audio.

Coaldale Parade

Smith’s was established in 1945 (or earlier) in Coaldale, AB and expanded to Lethbridge in 1965 to 13th street North, where the business has remained ever since. Smith’s Audio is a family owned business that takes pride in having a consistent focus: offering high performance products that look and sound better, are easy to use, last longer and are backed by reliable customer support. The store is not only family owned, it is family operated, with each member playing an integral role in the store’s success. Gerard Plettell, who titles himself “Owner, President and Janitor since 1965” says “Working together as a family we are truly blessed, and on occasion, cursed. We are only human with feelings and failings.” He continues to say, “The secret to our success and longevity, in

An honourable mention goes to our daughter Lyndsey Brees, who seems to be on call 24/7 for her computer skills and tech support. She is the memory bank.”

The other secret, according to Ashley, is listening keenly to clients. At Smith’s Audio, you’re invited to sit at a café table with a cup of coffee, surrounded by local art and new or vintage records. You can also join them in one of their four home theater vignettes and discuss the music you love. By talking with you, Gerard or Ashley will help discover the precise system to suit your taste and budget. It’s a conversation rather than a sales pitch and what you have to say truly matters. They appreciate their customers, and don’t take their customers trust in them lightly. Smith’s Custom Audio is thankful for the support the community has given them over the years, and regularly gives back by way of supporting local businesses and charitable causes.

In these days of big box stores, rotating staff, and phones that require “Press 1 for… press 2 for…” Smith’s Audio remains with no music on hold, and no automated phone system. The staff who sold you your product are the same staff who provide you after purchase support.

Experience, family and a passion for sound are what make this store work as a cohesive unit. If you would like to experience sound at its best, experience the difference at Smith’s Audio.

When Gianna first heard of Johnny Korthuis’s near death experience and his single-minded, focused determination to live, she knew she had to meet him. She connected with him via Facebook and then visited with him when he returned home. It was then she realized she had found a kindred spirit; someone who was driven to live life to its fullest. It was a feeling she understood and she knew she had to tell his story. That’s how it is with inspiration sometimes. It comes to you whether you’re looking for it or not.

Gianna says, “I have loved films since I was a kid & what drives me is a need to tell a visual story. I love every stage of making a film from planning it out or writing it to piecing it together in the edit. Every stage is so different and I love each one. It is a fulfilling experience to watch your vision come to reality when it's all said and done.”

Gianna Isabella first crossed my path about 3 years ago when she showed up at CTV to work beside our creative department as an intern. She boldly told us she would have her book written and first film shot by the end of the year. There was no doubt the girl had a plan. She would not, will not be deterred.

As our daily lives become more stressful, noisy and busy, waterfalls & fountains are increasingly being used as a means of calming and bringing us back to nature.

Whether used indoor or outside they can dramatically transform any room or outdoor living space with the peaceful sounds of falling water.

Indoors, our waterfall fountains transform a silent house or office space into a soothing, natural environment rich with the sounds of flowing water. Outdoors, they add a stunning visual focal piece to finish off your backyard paradise. Outdoor waterfalls reduce the sounds of traffic or other types of noise pollution. Indoor waterfalls also reduce noise pollution. Even in our homes we have distracting & unpleasant noise from our environment. The sound of flowing water promotes a calming atmosphere, and brings nature into your home.

Another important feature of an indoor waterfall or fountain is that flowing water can act as a humidifier. Humidity is important to us because it helps us maintain proper health. An increase in humidity will give our hair, nails & skin a healthier look. Getting near a waterfall can also relieve stress. If we feel that we are in touch or connected with nature, we feel calmer both inside & out. There is nothing more soothing after a stressful day at the office than to be near your indoor or outdoor waterfall.

You do not have to go on a trip in order to unwind, now you can just sit near your own waterfall. Waterfalls can help you stay healthier both mentally & physically.

Waterfalls from the Stovepipe Company can accent any living space with a variety of sizes & styles to suit any dĂŠcor.

Bedroom Makeover Dan Cayer, owner of Silk Plant Décor, enjoys his work and takes great pleasure in helping his customers create an environment that enhances their living space. Dan believes in supporting the community he does business in. He decided to use his company’s expertise to benefit a deserving family by creating and launching an annual “bedroom makeover”. He put the idea out there to an overwhelming response from people writing on behalf of friends and family for consideration. Although there were some wonderful entries, one family in particular stood out.

The winning entry was submitted by the aunt of Adele Possin. Adele turned eight years old in March, and until recently, she shared her room with her new baby sister, Autumn. Coming from a family with four brothers, Adele was thrilled to share her room and have another little girl to play with. Life didn’t turn out that way for the Possin family. Autumn died at 16 months old in a tragic accident. The family is heartbroken beyond words, but it is their faith, family and friends that are helping them to cope. Adele is having an especially hard time getting through this, and her aunt submitted the entry in hopes that making over Adele’s room, with Autumn still in mind, will help her deal with the process. The makeover will be a surprise for Adele. The family will be staying in Waterton for the weekend courtesy of the Waterton Lake Lodge while Dan and his team of sponsors work their magic at the Possin home. Giving back and making a difference to those who need a little support and encouragement is what it’s all about, and Dan plans to make the “Windy City Bedroom Makeover” an annual event.

JUMP UP & Shout! AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN TURF CLUB

Advertorial

If you’ve never been to a horse race, you don’t know what you are missing. There is excitement in the air from the minute the starting gate opens, right to the finish line. These magnificent powerful animals have one goal in mind… to win. There is a focus and intensity that is unparalleled as the jockey and horse work together to beat the odds. Watching the races from the fence line brings with it even more sensory participation, with the horses running mere feet away from where you stand, vying for position, thundering hooves, dirt flying in the air: you can feel their energy and can’t help but get caught up in it.

We are very lucky to have the Rocky Mountain Turf Club right here, in the middle of our city. It is a venue where you can bring the whole family to enjoy a day of fun every weekend from May through October. Even your pet is welcome (leashed of course). This is also a great venue for painters and photographers who bring their easel and brushes along to paint outdoors and capture footage. Best thing is… it’s free! Free parking, free entertainment and free admission. It’s not just about the racing at the RMTC Grandstand, it’s about creating a unique fun-filled destination for all those who come to take part.

HEALTH MATTERS

The Consequences of

Improper Liver Function

Welcome to my Health Matters article. Each issue I try choose a subject that is of importance & value to a person’s health. And the liver is considered by most naturopathic doctors to be the Priscilla Peltier, C.H., C.N.C., C. Irid., R.BIE Herbalist, definitive organ in the human body Nutrition Consultant, Iridoligist, and that, based on its health and overall Registered BioEnergetics Practitioner functioning, determines how healthy a priscilla.eyes@shaw.ca person FEELS. When your liver is not www.eyecuhealthy.net well, neither are you! 403.329.3100 (Office)

The liver is our second-largest organ (only the skin is bigger) and therefore one of the most important. If the body was an automobile, the liver would be its engine. It does hundreds of things to make sure it runs smoothly, playing a vital role in regulating fat and balancing our hormones, digestion & circulation. Any impairment of the liver will thus affect the digestive process. 403.942.5064 (Fax)

So why do we not associate many health problems with the breakdown of the liver? Part of the reason is that liver dysfunction does not occur overnight. Liver congestion is caused by toxic overload over time and is then unable to detoxify the bloodstream effectively. Chronic constipation also prevents the liver from eliminating toxins. When the liver is congested, the toxins circulate in the bloodstream and can enter into the brain, nervous system or other organs & fatty tissues.

When the liver tries to expel the poisons forced on it, the burden goes to the kidneys causing additional congestion. The liver can also become constipated just like the colon by an excess of sugar, alcohol, hydrogenated fats, over use of prescription drugs, white flour products, food additives and chemicals found in the water, food & polluted air.

When the liver is overburdened with intestinal toxins, resulting from impaired digestion, for example, its detoxification capacity is strained and can’t do a very effective job of processing nutrients and fats. So if you’re concerned with managing your weight, remember this important point: The more toxic your body becomes, the more difficulty you’ll have losing weight and keeping if off.

And did you know that a liver cleanse is also an important part of a natural cholesterol treatment plan? Performing a liver cleanse will make your liver more efficient and effective at performing all its functions, including making cholesterol. Therefore, cleansing your liver is one of the best things you can do to regain balance of your cholesterol.

Lifestyle changes can help strengthen your liver function: • Regular exercise • Encourage sweating to remove toxins through the skin such as an infrared sauna, relieving the liver & kidneys • Avoid smoking cigarettes • Use chemical-free cleaning & personal care products • Avoid chemical yard and bug sprays • Whole foods are key; they are far easier than processed foods for the liver to break down

Detoxifying your liver is not as difficult as you think: I recommend a two-part liver detoxification formula which should include milk thistle, dandelion, green tea and turmeric. Turmeric is the liver’s favorite spice; it stimulates bile flow & helps to protect the liver cells and regulate the colon & expel mucous. Milk thistle works to aid in the repair and reproduction of liver cells.

Green tea & dandelion root: oh how the liver loves green tea! And dandelions aren’t just weeds in the yard!

Drinking freshly squeezed lemon & lime juice in the morning is another helpful way to stimulate the liver.

Walnuts, holding high amounts of the amino acid arginine, aid the liver in detoxifying ammonia. Walnuts are high in glutathione & omega-3 fatty acids, which support normal liver cleansing action. Make sure you chew the nuts well (until they are liquefied) before swallowing.

The first part of such a program is when the toxins are neutralized and released into bile. Wild Horses, Wild Wolves Legends at Risk at the Foot of the Canadian Rockies

Pocaterra watching Hope and me

Author: Maureen Enns Review by: Jean Van Kleek

I have seen examples of caregiving within the wild-horse family groups that equal the depth of wolf family interactions.

Wolf south end of Horse Lake about one mile from former Sand Hill den sites

To say that Maureen Enns, who has titled herself as an “Investigative Artist/Conservationist, is unique would be an understatement. Maureen has travelled the world to raise the awareness of peaceful coexistence between wild animals and humans. Her most recent work, in the form of a book titled “Wild Horse, Wild Wolves” is the result of a six year study featuring the wild horses of the Ghost Forest, near her home and studio in Cochrane, Alberta. What makes Maureen’s work especially unique, is the three dimensional aspect she creates through the inclusion of her photography, artwork and insightful written observations. She literally takes you on her journey, sharing her passion for these beautiful wild animals and what she has learned about their behavior. Quirk - 27

The following is an excerpt from chapter one of Maureen’s book:

Understanding the wild horses began with realizing some of their behavior was similar to that of deer. My research ended with the understanding that the wild horses are a part of a complex matrix of wild animals, and that in order to survive, the horses needed to form relationships with wolves, deer, moose and sandhill cranes, among others. With this research, I humbly hope to put forward a revised definition of the Ghost Forest’s wild horses, one that does not include the catch-all word “feral” synonymous with “pest” in the circle of Sustainable Resource Development in Alberta. These are horses that have gone “back” to nature; I call the process “rewilding” or “naturizing.” It takes several generations for a horse to rewild, and some are more capable of that process than others – it seems their genetics need to be so inclined. It took time, living with

the wild horses and having some experience with domestic horses to realize the differences between a herd that has lived independent of humans for generations and a domestic herd. I have taken the time and have seen a depth of emotion and intra-herd bonding, as well as discipline and caretaking, that I would not originally have thought possible. And so the following story of the Ghost horses details the behavior and relationships I have observed these past six years. The depth of bonding and levels of caregiving within wolf packs have been well documented by many. I have seen examples of caregiving within the wild-horse family groups that equal the depth of wolf family interactions. I have also documented some unexplainable interactions between wild horses and a wolf pack that elucidate what it means to be a wild animal, dependent on other wild animals.

“Wild Horses, Wild Wolves” is a colourful, expressive and wonderfully articulated study not only of the “wildies” as they exist now, but also the history of these beautiful creatures and how they came to be a part of our heritage.

These are horses that have gone “back” to nature; I call the process “rewilding” or “naturizing.” About the Author

Some of Maureen’s greatest accomplishments as an artist include living with the grizzlies as long as she did in Kamchatka and being part of the program, Walking With Giants, which has been shown many times on PBS. She recently starred in the Pyramid Productions film titled Wild Horses of the Rockies which has been one of the most popular of Animal Planet. She has co-authored three books which include the best sellers published by Random House, Grizzly Heart and Grizzly Seasons. Her art exhibition career spans over 30 years nationally and internationally. She had the first solo contemporary art exhibition in Moscow after Perestroika.

Lethbridge By Ryan Uytdewilligen

LET’S TAKE A MINUTE AND REVIEW THE DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF THE WORD EXOTIC.

H

Exotic means strikingly unusual or strange in effect or appearance. Most of us from Lethbridge would use this word when describing a fun and exciting location like, maybe Mexico.

ow many times have you heard people say they just got back from an exotic trip to Mexico? With miles of sandy beaches, resorts, fruity drinks, and relaxing atmosphere, exotic would certainly be the best word to describe it. But never in my life had I ever been so dumfounded after talking about Lethbridge with my foreign classmates in Vancouver. After my ramblings of all things wrong and right with my hometown, these Mexican students looked me straight in the eye and said, “Wow, Lethbridge sounds very exotic!”

All I could do is laugh at the notion that the prairies could be thought of as exotic. I tried to ruin that notion and describe all the simplicities and normalities of Lethbridge, only to find them agreeing that Lethbridge indeed sounded different and exotic. But that description just seemed so strange to me. I had grown up and lived there all my life. I did everything you could possibly do there for fun, multiple times, which is why I was looking for something different. I enrolled in Vancouver Film School in 2013 packed my bags, and headed off to the west coast with dreams of becoming a writer. Right away, things seemed very different, and dare I say, exotic.

Vancouver is a diverse and stunningly gorgeous city due to its ocean side location. I first spent hours looking out of my high rise window, glued to the crashing waves I had rarely seen before. It’s fair to say, Lethbridge is indeed lacking in

the water department. Sure, there is Park Lake, but compared to the water you get in Vancouver, that’s a puddle. However, your amount of space is quite the opposite. Going from acreage to studio apartment is quite a shock. Still, I managed to get used to it while being wowed by the plethora of shops on Robson Street and the free living hippie lifestyle.

After getting to know my Mexican classmates and still trying to prove them wrong about Lethbridge, I checked out a Mexican taco stand that is like no other. Absolutely delicious and addictive! But of course, I had to throw a comment about the beef. Seemingly nothing beats Alberta Vancouver

The thought of wide open fields, cows, and small towns brought a smile to my face.

Farm in Lethbridge

beef. So maybe we did have something special or well-known back home after all? Every meal I’ve had here has been unique and delicious, ranging from everything you could ever want like Ethiopian, Thai, fancy Italian, and on and on. But every time there is beef involved, I still crack a smile and think of home. Nobody seems to barbecue here and I’m not sure why. I haven’t told anyone about Tabor Corn yet either.

I also did the unthinkable and left my car in Alberta. I figured I would rarely use it here and I was right. I believed the parking would be ridiculous and the traffic jams massive. My friend, Mariana, from Mexico City assured me there were no traffic jams here. I was beginning to see how everyone’s view on a place differed. A teacher asked us what we thought of Vancouver and I said huge at the same time she said small. From there, we began to learn from each other and get to know each other’s cultures. I introduced her to the “pickup truck” culture. Everyone in Lethbridge seems to own a truck… or three, while hardly anyone here drives one, let alone own a car in Vancouver. There have been days that I have wanted a nice relaxing country drive, but that’s not going happen unfortunately. Instead I have to take the noisy, crowded, and long train ride that weaves through the city. Some people don’t believe that I came from a place that didn’t have a train or subway system. I just laugh and try and imagine a subway system running through the coulees and down Mayor Magrath Drive. Not in a million years!

The last thing we always find ourselves talking about is the weather. I’m usually in T-shirts and soaking up the rays in the 5 degree sunshine, which is heavenly when you’re from a place that is often blanketed by snow. Marianna finds it cold and often gets bundled up. My favorite day is when it snowed here for a couple of minutes. She had never seen snow before and was amazed at the beauty. I still wore my T-shirt and recalled the feeling of minus thirty-five. I don’t miss that or the wind at all! The rain here is a different story.

Ryan & Mariana

As school continued, I found myself talking about the lack of country music and the incredible organization I grew up in called 4H. Everyone hates country music here Vancouver Transit and have no response whatsoever when I talk about showing my 4-H pigs. After a night of karaoke, I sang a country song and dedicated it to all the Albertans in the crowd. I think there were four. It was then, I admitted defeat. I was homesick and wanted a break from the concrete jungle. The thought of wide open fields, cows, and small towns brought a smile to my face.

I realized how unique Lethbridge is. I suppose I was under the impression everyone drove a quad, loved Paul Brandt songs, and barbecued the majority of their meals. I was wrong. Vancouver and the diverse class I found myself in showed me how different every place could be. When two of my friends revealed they both were from Mexico City, my first thought was “oh, they must have known each other.” Not a chance. But that was the icing on the cake. It made me feel lucky to be from that kind of place. I will be taking a trip home this spring with Mariana. She tells me every day how excited she is to ride in a tractor. An odd request I know, but apparently they don’t drive tractors in Mexico City. Yeah, I’m still learning about all these different cultures too! I’m getting the hang of west coast big city life and hoping she will be returning the favor and taking me to Mexico. For now, I find myself constantly talking about one hundred kilometer an hour winds, wide open wheat fields, and a city that’s a lot like the bar from Cheers, where everyone knows your name.

I just thought this was normal life. Turns out it is exotic Lethbridge.

and someone who is just simply ‘there’. The need for foster homes continues and we are especially in need of homes for adolescents and aboriginal families to parent aboriginal children. Through the ‘hustle and bustle’ of our daily lives, we would like to take a moment and reflect on the value of family. Family is the basic unit of society and its well being should be supported and preserved. Sadly, not all children have safe and stable families. Some live in abusive and neglectful situations. These are the children who come to the attention of Children’s Services. In some cases, supports and intervention services are necessary to assist the child’s family to meet their child’s needs. At times, in order to ensure safety, a child may be removed from the home and placed in foster care.

Foster families provide temporary care to children with the goal of returning the child to his or her family once they are able to provide a safe, nurturing home again.

Children need families who are patient, nurturing, energetic, have a good sense of humor, good problem solving skills and who are able to advocate on their behalf. Foster parents are special people who not only provide this, but give children hope and a chance to

In your neighborhood, there are children who need your help. We believe that healthy, safe children make healthy, safe communities and we all have a role to play in ensuring the future vitality of our communities. When we come together to support our children, we give hope. Children’s Services salutes Foster Families across the province as we recognize their inclusiveness, dedication and compassion for children and their families.

LESSONS I’VE LEARNED FROM MY DOGS Shani was the runt of her litter. She was very shy, sensitive and wary of the world around her. She took a long time to even navigate two stairs to go outside, and an even longer time to be able to jump in or out of a vehicle. It was quite embarrassing at first actually, people watching you pick up a long legged half grown large dog to put her inside… but I did… for a while.

Then, Shani discovered “the ball”. She loves her ball and nothing gets in the way of her enjoying it. She is very focused, and I dare say, obsessed with it.

Through her passion for her ball, she has worked through many things that used to bring fear to her. The ball can land in places that she has to hunt for it, around things she would have been afraid of, but she is on a mission and always finds a way to proudly bring it back. We all have fears, some more extreme or debilitating than others. Some are hidden even from ourselves, because we are still able to function, not seeing them for what they are as they quietly keep us from enjoying life to its fullest.

By Jean Van Kleek

Some of us won’t go after the ball when it is thrown far and high in the air, saying to ourselves, “I didn’t really want it anyway”. We will instead choose something else easily in reach. Sometimes we will go after the same old ball because we know how it bounces, and requires no change. And how about the curve ball? We often go after that one in the same direction as the straight one, because it “always was before and should be now”. These are all fear based reactions that we seldom acknowledge for what they truly are.

Once Shani found her ball, she found her joy. That’s not to say she isn’t afraid of anything anymore, but she has found a place that brings her happiness and overcame what were obstacles for her. Shani has taught me to catch the ball, no matter where it is thrown and to trust that no matter where that is… it’s the right direction.

Skinny Bites

FOR DOGS

A very low fat recipe made from simple, fresh ingredients you may have at home. Celery adds fibre and potassium as is a diuretic that helps to eliminate excess fluids reducing kidney and urinary tract infections.

Soft and chewy!

Boil chicken pieces. Cool, remove fat/skin/bones and mince. Set aside. I use a food processor to mince all the ingredients. In large bowl, combine beaten eggs, All Bran, olive oil, broccoli, carrots, apple, celery. Add chicken and oatmeal. Mix thoroughly by hand. Press onto 9X13 cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or greased, 1/2 inch thick. Score with paring knife into bite size squares. Bake at 350 F for 1 hour 10 minutes. Cool by putting on cookie rack or turning over. Fresh food so must be refrigerated and used within 5 days. Freezes well. Kiwi cried for them!! I ate them too!!

The Lethbridge & District Humane Society’s main goal is to find the best possible homes for abandoned, stray and previously owned animals from Lethbridge and surrounding area. The Society has been a no-kill haven since its inception in early 1970. We also strive, with limited resources and volunteers, to educate the public on the benefits of spay/neuter and vaccinating pets, as well as on responsible pet ownership. Rescue animals make wonderful pets. When deciding if you would like to have a pet as part of your family we hope you will consider providing a home to an animal that has had no choice but to be alone, and is waiting to be loved by someone just like you.

We do not receive regular funding from any level of government. We operate on the fundraising events we ourselves or others in the community organize, adoption fees, membership fees, donations from the public (personal and corporate), casino, and occasional grants.

Chevel

Our organization is manned mainly by volunteers and 2 part time paid employees. Our yearly expenditures amount to approximately $140,000.00. All animals entering our facility are vet checked, given their vaccinations and all are spayed or neutered. Because we do not euthanize to create space we are limited in the number of cats and dogs that we can take in at any given time.

If you are interested in finding out more about our programs for volunteering, or would like buy a membership please go to www.lethbridgehumanesociety.com

Ollie Consider providing a home to an animal that has had no choice but to be alone, and is waiting to be loved by someone just like you.

Crissy

The Lethbridge & District Humane Society: • Spays or neuters all cats and dogs adopted from the society • Answers thousands of questions about animal care • Provides isolation space for cats and dogs entering our facility who may be harboring or exhibiting disease • Provides foster care for any cat or dog requiring special treatment • Carefully screens potential adopters. Because many of our cats or dogs often come to us in a highly stressed state, we must ensure that the cat or dog goes to the best possible home for the remainder of its life • Coordinates over 100 active volunteers who are dedicated to caring for those who have no voice and no choice
