As a New Year begins, we often find ourselves feeling a sense of new beginnings and hope for all things that come with this next page on the calendar of our lives.
www.quirkmagazine.net Jean Van Kleek Photo: Thomas Porter
Along with this sense of renewal, we often make promises to ourselves; resolutions to do better, and to be better. We are all works in progress, and this is a great time to reflect and set new goals for ourselves. This world can be a crazy place to live at times, and the truth is, we can’t control what goes on around us, but we can control ourselves and how react to it. The healthier and happier we are, the better we are able to cope with that around us. To this end, for the very first time, we are dedicating the entire issue to wellness, physically, spiritually and financially. In this issue you will find several unique ways you can begin the journey to becoming a better version of yourself. Along with our wellness pieces, we also have a very interesting article about a very uniquely talented Southern Alberta artist who now resides in the Crowsnest Pass. Tony Partridge has a passion for nature, and his artwork reflects the subtle nuances of the natural surroundings he spends much of his time exploring. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoy bringing it to you, and may your life be blessed throughout the New Year. We look forward to sharing your stories in 2019!

Brick walls
There is a slight chance that I might be a word snob. Okay, more than a slight chance. But in my defense, words have power, and confusing their meaning can have dire consequences. The perfect example is the blurring of the words “difficult” and “impossible”. A true linguistic travesty! How easy, when lazy or afraid, to call something impossible, when it is merely difficult. It’s a betrayal of the most personal kind. I’ve spent a lot of time in this column discussing difficult things because I believe that once we determine that they’re not impossible, we can do more than we ever dreamed. But today I want to talk about the less inspirational subject of the impossible. I mean, the actual impossible. Because sometimes that brick wall is not a disguised doorway, ready to open if we throw enough courage and hard work at it. Sometimes it’s a plain old immovable brick wall.
My world lately is constructed almost entirely of brick walls. I don’t just have one or two, I live in a bloody labyrinth. I was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome a few years ago. It’s a technical way of saying that my body’s defensive cells have turned against me. I went from wandering happily down my own less-trodden path, to not daring to leave my apartment. Food, fragrance, motion, friction, exertion, sunlight, temperature, sound, even the clothes on my back, all trigger symptoms from annoying to devastating. I can bravely push forward, but at some point my body gives out and I’m left gasping with my head on my desk, trying to remember how to spell my own name. I look out into the wide world and think of all the things I could write, places I could explore, causes I could champion. And my body says no.
Sometimes the answer is no.
“Because And so I hit those brick walls at every turn, bouncing around until I sometimes feel like a sometimes that pinball, and it’s definitely not fair. Brick walls never are. But to complain that they exist is a waste brick wall is not a disguised doorway, of all that is precious. ready to open if
You won’t always have the talent to do what you want at the level you wish you could perform. You we throw enough can’t change the revolution of the Earth to gain a courage and hard few more hours. You can’t make someone love you work at it.” back. We are meant to test boundaries with everything we’ve got, but when our all is not enough, there is only one thing to do. Well, three things actually. First, we have to forgive ourselves for our limitations. We have to refrain from casting blame, even if there’s someone to blame. And we have to look at what way is left open. There will be a new place to explore, that is guaranteed. Don’t act like a pinball, blindly pinging off obstacles. Instead, travel your labyrinth with patience and let those brick walls funnel you away from what you can’t have, onward to what you can. Because despite all of its brick walls, life still teems with possibility.

Connect with the Heart... Heal the Body
Dr. David Suzuki tells us that condensed molecules of the air we exhale from verbal expressions of anger, hatred and jealousy actually contain toxins. Accumulated over one hour, these toxins are enough to kill 80 guinea pigs. According to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (2007), there is a documented link between stress and an increased risk for heart attacks, depression, cancer and the progression of HIV and AIDS and that workplace stress may be as bad for one’s heart as smoking and high cholesterol. Imagine the damage you are doing to your physical body when you experience negative, selfsabotaging thoughts.
The heart contains around 40,000 cells like those found in the brain. The consciousness of the heart can actually change how the brain processes information which can affect how energy flows in the body. Since 1991, the Heart Math Institute has conducted leading-edge research on how the heart continuously communicates with the brain and body via the nervous system, hormonal system and bio-electromagnetic interactions. The Heart Math system has been tested in healthcare, educational, corporate and athletic settings around the world. Through what is referred to as heart-brain coherence, the body learns how to remain in a healthier, stronger state. The human heart generates a stronger electromagnetic field than any other organ in the human body. This electromagnetic field changes in relation to your emotions affecting every cell in the body. Besides generating the strongest electromagnetic field, the heart has an intelligence of its own, so some neurocardiologists refer to it as the “heart-brain”.
Scientists are able to measure the physiological effects of emotions; a form of energy that runs through your body like an electrical current. As the electrical current of an emotion travels along the neural pathways in the brain, it triggers a release of chemicals that communicate with the rest of the body. If adrenaline is released, it places your body in a highalert state. This is great if it helps you to escape from danger. However, over a long period of time, adrenaline can be very damaging to your body suppressing your immune system. Negative emotions actually weaken your body, while positive emotions strengthen your body. Recent medical studies prove that depression causes the blood platelets to become more sticky, clogging arteries and veins leading to heart disease. A weak body is at greater risk for disease.
It’s important to look at what is happening in your life around the time that you develop a medical problem. Regurgitating negative thoughts only serves to worsen the situation. The brain believes it keeps us out of trouble, as it thinks in terms of what has the most payoff. The heart, on the other hand, allows us to feel what is best thereby connecting us to our intuition and to a more highly-evolved consciousness. The mind wants to stay within the restrictive comfort zone with which it is familiar. Choosing to pay attention to the mind rather than listening to what the heart is trying to communicate can make all the difference in the world as to whether you maintain health or succumb to illness. When you tune into your heart, separating from your thoughts and emotional reactions, you discover that the heart has a very clear way of guiding you. The heart speaks from genuine feeling and authenticity, in the present moment whereas the mind often speaks from faulty perceptions and fears, at the root of stress,
anxiety, and depression. Most of us have been taught that the heart is constantly responding to “orders” sent by the brain. However, the heart actually sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. Moreover, Heather Gunn these heart signals have a significant effect on RN, CCHt brain function. Not only does the heart www.onespirit.ca respond to the brain, but the brain continuously responds to the heart. What’s 403-894-2622 important to know is that your heart emits a onespiritall@gmail.com much stronger electro-magnetic force field than your brain. Think of it as the ace in a deck of cards.
When we feel anxious, we release chemicals that, over time, affect the health of our bodies. In his book The Biology of Belief, cell biologist, Dr. Bruce Lipton, talks about how a cell is either in defense mode or in growth mode; it cannot be in both at once. Your thoughts, feelings, emotions and beliefs profoundly affect your health. Your reactions to situations cause your body to release hormones such as serotonin and oxytocin (good for you) or cortisol and adrenaline (too much can kill you).
Simply put: a positive perspective creates good health and destructive thoughts create disease. Your emotions and experiences are “energy”, stored in the cellular memory of your body. There is no way that you can experience some event without having it leave some kind of imprint on your cellular health. When your body attempts to communicate with you to tell you that something is wrong, it speaks to you in symptoms. Symptoms are the body’s ways of saying “Hey, I’m talking to you!” More often than not, this message is rooted in faulty perceptions that, over time, damage the cells that lead to the symptoms.
Humans are not “mechanical things”. We think, we feel, we hurt. And when we allow our thinking to control us, we become sick. Through regression hypnosis, we connect with the heart to replace those healthdepleting thoughts that made you sick in the first place. It enables you to reclaim your health. You have the inherent power to do that. Get out of your head and into your heart. You’re worth it.
“If someone wishes for good health, he must first ask if he is ready to do away with the reasons for his illness. Only then is it possible to help him.” ~ Hippocrates Heather Gunn, RN, is a certified clinical hypnotherapist, non-denominational minister and Reiki master teacher.

Time to Tone up for Your Health! Your most efficient & safe body tune up?
VibraFit Exercise Training!! VibraFit uses the principal of “Acceleration Training” to stimulate waves of energy throughout the body, activating muscle contractions at 30 to 50 times per second. This allows you, even if you have injuries which limit your ability to move, to achieve a cardiovascular workout similar to a 6– 9 mile run in only 10 minutes! In conventional training you only use 30 to 40 percent of your muscle (your voluntary muscle) whereas VibraFit Training stimulates 95 to 100 percent of your muscle fibre. This makes time spent on your VibraFit Trainer much more efficient because you are toning muscles that you can’t in a gym! Waste substances that cause pain are more easily removed due to increased oxygen making the lymphatic drainage system more efficient. Vibration Exercise technology is supported by decades of scientific research since it was first embraced by scientists in the 1960’s investigating cures for osteoporosis.
Not only does vibration training build muscle strength but it also helps to develop “explosive muscle power” that’s essential for sports like hockey and basketball. IT ALSO increases range of motion, balance, flexibility and coordination used in sports such as golf and tennis. The net result is more stamina and energy; more speed; increased flexibility, mobility and coordination; rapid recovery of muscles and tissue; improved collagen production and fat reduction. Soon you will begin to notice an improvement in posture and the ability to stand taller and longer. Whole Body Vibration builds muscle mass 1 ½ to 2 times faster than conventional weight workouts by producing the effects of 80 different exercises through minor adjustments in posture and body positioning. For Rehabilitation It also increases the production of all hormones including Human Growth Hormone (HGH) -the key to repair and regeneration of soft tissue -- and natural chemicals to suppress pain. Improved circulation also helps to drain fluid build-up from injured tissue. It really is the “miracle therapy”.
University of Calgary Schulich School of Bio-Engineering “Mechanical vibrations appear to alter cell behavior in a way that point to the potential for the regeneration of cells and tissues in the spine. Our results were both surprising and encouraging, given the socio-economic costs of back pain.” Christopher Hunter, Biomedical engineer, Schulich School of Engineering and the McCaig Institute for Bone Hand Joint Health. July, 2010
Only 10 minutes on our VibraFit Trainer equals: a 6 to 9 mile run & 12,000 – 18,000 steps! Imagine the health benefits the VibraFit Trainer will give you in the least amount of your precious time with the least amount of stress on your joints!

From the
Ground Up
Expanding the Mind... Feeding the Soul
- advertorial
In an increasingly chaotic world, it has become very important to replenish and rejuvenate our bodies and souls. While we can’t change what goes on around us, we can change the way we react to the overload of stimuli we are exposed to on a daily basis. By grounding ourselves, we are better equipped to handle our environment and the stresses it produces.
From the Ground Up is a truly unique weekend workshop experience that combines the art of making sourdough bread, Soul Health yoga along with healing and learning from the horses at this beautiful equine facility. Located just south of Lethbridge near Magrath, AB, this retreat lies on 160 acres overlooking the mountains in the distance, creating a peaceful, magical environment that inspires growth and self-actualization. The centre is complete with an indoor equine arena, full kitchen and overnight accommodations for those taking part in the retreat.
The three modalities designed to create the program have been carefully balanced to feed your soul and stretch your mind. By simply performing the centuries old practice of creating sourdough bread from scratch, we are taken back to our roots and become mindful of each step. The Soul Health Yoga is a fluid braid of talents, strengths & character; movements, thoughts & emotions; calmness, postures & laughter; alone on your mat, all one in a group and an integration of awareness and choices as Quirk - 12
you move from the ground up. Stepping into the arena with the horses, we learn to discover the message behind our emotions while learning about the power of our hearts and the connection we share with those around us. Horses have an almost mystical ability to connect, communicate and cooperate with humans. Their strength and honesty in these connections can ground, heal and teach; helping us to better navigate our own lives and interpersonal relationships. Equine learning in the round pen really cannot be over-rated and must be experienced. Arrive just before lunch and settle into your room. You will be welcomed by Janet, Cheri and Cori who will share their passions over the next two days and evenings. Start to unwind with a welcoming and stretching session with our Yoga master Cori. Then you will meet Cheri, our Sourdough Artisan to begin your sourdough journey and enjoy a delicious lunch.
While we allow the bread to rest and do “its thing”, we will then move into a couple hours doing ground work with our team of horses. Your Eponaquest Instructor, Janet, will guide you through a new way of looking at the world. You will begin to understand the direct correlation between your attitudes and abilities while directing and communicating with a 1000 - pound horse. The personal insights can be life changing! Each day continues to flow in and out of these three extremely powerful and grounding practices. We always finish the day
with a deep meditative session of yoga before we send you off to sleep in the peace and tranquility of our oasis.
From the Ground Up is a workshop that will guide you to becoming centered, present and mindful in a joyful way that helps heal body, mind and spirit. Join us for your journey into self-discovery.

My first bread baking experience was at the age of 8 in my grandmother’s farmhouse kitchen learning to make her own recipe for brioche-style rolls. I watched those hands I loved knead the dough and felt connected to her as she shared her skill with me. As a young mother I baked wholegrain breads for my young family, feeding the people I loved as my grandmother had me. Now I greet each day with the quiet contemplative process of feeding my starter, choosing and mixing heritage grain flours into bread, hands in the dough, feeling, smelling and loving every moment. Each step in the beautiful ritual of sourdough baking – slow living in truth – reminds me to be mindful, and invites me to find joy and promise in the magic of life. As I share love through sourdough baking I understand the joy that my grandmother felt as she shared with me that morning.

I created Lodestone Leadership because of a deep personal desire to help and empower others to lead strong lives, my career has led me through numerous roles where helping others is the primary goal, including eight years of facilitating grief groups at the Calgary Alberta Children’s Hospital.
I began riding seven years ago, and was personally transformed by the beauty and powerful influence of horses. This inspired me to take advanced training in Equine Facilitated Learning, eventually completing an apprenticeship with the world-renowned author and trainer, Linda Kohanov. Now, as the CEO of Lodestone Leadership, and a certified Eponaquest Instructor, my mission is to share these life-changing experiences with others.

The three modalities designed to create the program have been carefully balanced to feed your soul and stretch your mind.
The four years of summer camps I attended, as a kid, are the most influential experiences of my life. Soul Health programs, classes and destination experiences are all modelled after my kid camp moments.
I thrill when I get to create the opportunity to offer moments of curiosity, trepidation, frustration, anticipation, determination, and ultimate bravery in a student trying something new! I love being included in another’s success and celebration of personal achievement. And it is an honour to be vulnerable and surrender to special moments of simply being in compassion and hope with another soul. Being an IAYT certified yoga therapist, and with over two decades of group and private fitness based yoga experience, I am a confident leader who humbly admits I teach what I need to learn! Life experiences have dealt me a generous hand of diversity that allows me the special gift of integrating groups in a safe and fun environment to recognize and nurture your Soul Health.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS Curbing Debt By Georgie Erickson
Here are a few simple strategies to help keep control of your finances.
1. BUDGET
If you go into debt, it's an indication that you are living beyond your means. Without planning, it can be hard to know just where you're overspending. Drafting a monthly budget allows you to see in blackand-white where your money goes. While you usually can't adjust your fixed costs, such as your car and house payment, you probably have discretionary areas where you might be able to make cuts, such as eating out and entertainment. Trim your expenses so that your total outflow is less than your income and you should be able to keep out of debt. There are plenty of apps out there that can help you establish a monthly budget based on how much money you have coming in and what you typically put your dollars toward. These apps will keep you on top on how you’re doing over the course of the month and let you know if you’re going in the red.
2. USE DEBIT CARDS
Credit cards and payment plans are a relatively new concept in the big scheme of things. It wasn’t until the late 1950’s that payment plans were an option. Since then, owing for the purchases we make is much more common than paying for them upfront. With this convenience comes a real danger of debts becoming out of control. It starts out quite innocently as we talk ourselves into easy low payment plans that each on their own are fine, but start to add up after several purchases with a variety of credit cards and loans. This coupled with lines of credit, equity loans and mortgage payments can start to create a bleak financial picture and begin to take up a large portion of monthly income.
If this has happened to you, know you are not alone. It’s very common to suddenly find yourself burdened with debt in a culture that thrives on buy now-pay later product. If none of us used credit and lived strictly from our incomes like they did years ago, we wouldn’t enjoy most of the luxury items we have become accustomed to. Buying on credit isn’t a problem, but controlling the amount of credit we use has become a very large problem for a vast majority of us. Also, we often don’t factor in unforeseen emergency expenses, or the possibility of job loss that come into the mix. Debt and financial issues play a huge part in our every day stresses, and can affect relationships and health if not kept in check. Quirk - 16
Unlike credit cards, debit cards are tied directly to your bank account. If you don't have money in your account, you can't make a charge on a debit card. Since no credit is extended, you can't go into debt using your debit card. Be aware of any overdraft programs your bank might automatically extend you which effectively grant you credit if you overdraw your bank account while using your debit card. Also, it can be very helpful to apply to your bank for a visa debit card to use for online purchases. The money is taken directly from your bank account instead of charging to your credit card.
3. TRY STICKING TO CASH
You can’t overspend cash — once that $30 in your wallet is gone, it’s gone. So you can spend it on one dinner out or you can buy groceries that will give you a week’s worth of lunch. That’s up to you.
4. PAY OFF BALANCES MONTHLY
If you absolutely have to put some debt on your credit card, pay it off as quickly as possible. Interest charges can rapidly compound your debt, and before you know it you might be completely unable to pay down your debt. One way to avoid overcharging on your credit card is to allocate money from your bank account before you make any charges. As soon as the charges hit, use the reserved money to pay them off.
5. MAKE SHOPPING LISTS & STICK TO 10. CANCEL MEMBERSHIPS YOU DON’T THEM USE Before heading out to run errands, write down what you need. If it’s not on the list, don’t buy it. Cutting back on impulsive purchases can help keep your spending in check.
Whether you’re not using your gym membership or rarely use a streaming service, it’s a good idea to look at the subscription fees you’re paying and see if there are any you could eliminate.
No one knows absolutely everything there is to know about personal finance — it’s a massive topic. Plus, things change. No matter what you’re interested in or have questions about, there are a lot of quality resources available on everything from budgeting to investing to getting out of student loan debt and everything in between.
It’s a good idea to always connect to your home and office Wi-Fi to reduce your cell phone’s data usage. Doing so can you avoid getting hit with hefty overage fees on your bill. And you also may be able to take advantage of reputable free Wi-Fi hotspots. Just make sure the network you’re hopping on is secure.
6. READ ABOUT MONEY
7. MAINTAIN GOOD CREDIT
A good credit score can save you on everything from interest rates on loans and credit cards to cable TV subscriptions, cell phone plans and insurance policies If your scores are currently looking stellar, you can maintain good standing by paying all your bills on-time, keeping your debt levels low and adding a mix of credit accounts as you can afford to. If your credit is looking rusty, you can improve your scores by paying down big credit card balances, limiting new credit inquiries and disputing any errors on your credit reports.
8. TURN OFF INSTANT ONLINE ORDERING
Having 1-Click or a similar service turned on with your Amazon or other online account sure makes it easy to order the latest book in your favorite series or those new shoes you just don’t feel you can live without. The problem is, this quick and easy purchasing tool can really damage your budget if you aren’t careful. Giving yourself a few more steps to make an order happen can give you a moment to decide if you really need to order this product.
9. UNSUBSCRIBE TO EMAILS THAT ALERT YOU OF SALES Your closet is full of T-shirts and shoes, but when that comes in practically shouting at you about a deal, how can you refuse? So, you head to the store and before you know it, you’ve used your plastic for the T-shirt featured in the email, as well as a couple others that were just too cute to pass up. You have the discount coupon, so it’s all good, right? These purchases may be OK and even fun every once and awhile when your wallet allows, but had you not known of this sale, you may not have ventured to the store. Imagine if this happens every time you get one of these emails. Save yourself the temptation (and the inbox space) and unsubscribe.
11. REMEMBER THE WI-FI
12. PAY YOUR CREDIT CARD BALANCES MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH
It can be all too easy to rack up credit card debt, given how simple it is to swipe your plastic and not think about those purchases until the very end of the month. But to avoid running up a balance you can’t pay off in full, consider paying your balance down every week or even every day from a linked debit card account.
13. PRIORITIZE CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS
If you do end up carrying balances on multiple credit cards, you may be able to pay your debts down faster by prioritizing payments. Make the minimums on all your cards, as a missed payment can wreck your credit, but put more money toward the card with the lowest balance or the one carrying highest the annual percentage rate. The former can be a great motivator, while the latter can keep your debts from snowballing.
14. GET A SIDE JOB
These days, entrepreneurs are earning extra money by sharing their rides, starting a blog, running tasks for others, bidding for freelance work — you name it. If spending less isn’t curbing your debts, you may want to consider taking on a side gig to generate extra income.
15. SELL YOUR STUFF
Looking for another way to generate some other dollars to stay out of debt? There are plenty of apps and websites out there that can help you sell your gently used clothing or start your own online consignment shop.

You may have heard the buzz around fermentation recently. Fermentation is an ancient method of preserving the seasons harvest. Fermented foods are found in the history of various cultures and were upheld for their special life giving properties. While fermentation itself is thousands of years old, its myriad of health benefits have only recently been discovered and analyzed. You may ask, “isn’t the same as pickling?” Although it seems similar, there is a vast difference in not only the process, but the benefits that go along with it.
Foods that are pickled are those that have been preserved in an acidic medium. In the case of various types of supermarket pickles, the pickling comes from vinegar. These vegetables, however, are not fermented (even though vinegar itself is the product of fermentation) and hence do not offer the probiotic and enzymatic value of homemade fermented vegetables.

Vegetables that you ferment in your kitchen using a starter, salt, and some filtered water create their own self preserving, acidic liquid that is a by-product of the fermentation process. Home fermentation of vegetables preserves without the use of any pressure or heat unlike supermarket versions of the same foods. It allows the ubiquitous and beneficial lactobacilli present on the surface of all living things – yes, even your own skin – to proliferate creating lactic acid which not only pickles and preserves the vegetables, but also promotes the health of those who consume it .
Fermentation helps increase digestion and bioavailability of nutrients, as well manage and prevent disease, including H. pylori infection, cancer, liver disease, arthritis and inflammatory bowel. Fermented foods are also filled with beneficial bacteria that work as reinforcement for the good bacteria in the digestive system. Since 7-80 per cent of the immune system lies in the gut, having proper balance of gut flora is very important.
Esther Beazer, certified Fermentationist, is a young woman who, herself, had suffered from digestive issues and began searching for ways to become healthier through fitness and overall wellness. She studied nutrition, which led to studying gut health and how it is the foundation to a healthy body. It was through this research she discovered fermentation and subsequently enrolled in a program with instructor, Summer Bock, to become a certified Fermentationist. It is her goal to share what she has learned about this fascinating ancient process with

HOW WELL ARE YOU SLEEPING?
Deep, uninterrupted sleep is one of the main components of a healthy lifestyle. Yet, many Canadians struggle to fall and stay asleep, robbing themselves of the restorative effects sleep affords.
Several factors can result in a sleep deficit, including:
Body: your pre-sleep workout, that late police-show or a post-dinner cup of coffee might be leaving you overstimulated at bedtime.
Mind: an important business decision, a child’s welfare or an upcoming excitement might be causing you anxiety.
Outside factors: that barking dog next door, passing traffic or southern Alberta winds can prevent or interrupt sleep.
A Better Night's Sleep
The good news is you can take steps to increase your chances of enjoying a good night’s sleep. • Caffeine: if it can jog you awake in the morning, coffee can do exactly the same in the evening. Restrict your coffee intake to two cups a day, and avoid any after lunch. • Nicotine: like caffeine, nicotine is a stimulant and can actually worsen your sleep. If you’re in the process of quitting smoking, the withdrawal process can also affect sleep patterns. Once your body adjusts, you will fall asleep faster and wake less often. • Alcohol: yes, it’s a depressant that can help you fall asleep. However, it also interrupts sleep. Avoid alcohol within four to six hours of bedtime. • Food: heavy meals or foods that upset your stomach can cause sleep problems. However, some people find a light snack at bedtime helps them fall asleep. • Exercise: regular exercise is a positive lifestyle routine, which can help you fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly. The key is to end your exercise sessions at least six hours before bedtime to avoid overstimulation. • Electronic devices: laptops, alarm clocks and cellphone screens can all interfere with your body’s sleep cues. Turn off these devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime, and move them away from your bedside.
And a few more tips to help you sleep soundly: • Arise at the same time seven days a week, even on vacation. • Avoid naps; if you must, restrict them to 30 minutes between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
• Develop a regular schedule for meals, medications, chores and other activities to help your body clock run smoothly. • Discover relaxing pre-bedtime rituals, such as taking a warm bath, enjoying a light snack or reading for a few minutes. • Designate a specific time during the day to write down your worries. You’ll get them out of your system, rather than dwelling on them at bedtime • Develop a regular sleep schedule, but don’t go to bed until you feel sleepy. If you are unable to fall or stay asleep within 20 minutes, get up. Engage in a quiet activity until you feel tired.
Snoring & Sleep Apnea
If you have tried many of these tips and still struggle with snoring or sleep apnea, we are here to help.
At Lethbridge Dental Surgical Suites, we understand the stress obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) places on your daily routine. We also have the knowledge to get you sleeping fully again. Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder that causes your airway to collapse during sleep, decreasing airflow to your lungs. This can happen several times each night, causing your brain to wake your body in order to start breathing again. If left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of numberous health issues, including stroke, heart failure and diabetes. Fortunately, it’s treatable.
How do you treat snoring and sleep apnea?
A sleep apnea oral appliance is a premium, custom-fit dental appliance developed for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. It may be an effective, comfortable, and durable alternative to CPAP therapy or corrective surgery.
When you come in for your no-charge consultation, Dr. Murray will conduct a thorough examination to determine whether or not an oral device is the right option for you.

TREATMENT FOR JAW JOINT PAIN AND WRINKLES WITH BOTOX®
TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorders)
Commonly referred to as "TMJ" Temporomandibular Joint and muscle disorders are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the muscles that control jaw movement. Myofascial pain is a pain or discomfort in the muscles that control jaw function.
Not all TMJ problems manifest themselves this way, because this is a condition of both the joint and the muscle. The cause of discomfort could also be attributed to arthritis, or internal derangement of the joint. In some cases a patient may experience all three of these conditions at the same time. Some signs you may be suffering from TMJ problems include: • Pain or tenderness of your jaw. • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints. • Aching pain in and around your ear. • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing. • Aching facial pain. • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should consult your physician for proper diagnosis and treatment options. At Lethbridge Dental Surgical Suites, we offer no charge consultations to determine whether or not you are a candidate for treatment with Botox® or Dysport®. Botox® is considered as an alternative treatment for TMJ disorder and should only be considered after consulting your dentist. Visit our clinic for a no hassle consultation.
Treating TMJ with Botox® Botulinum toxin, aka Botox®, may be used as an alternative treatment for TMJ disorders. When injected into facial muscles afflicted with soreness and discomfort, it relieves TMJ pain and jaw tension for many patients by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain.
Botox® treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension is usually an effective non-surgical remedy. Injections can be administered in a dental office by a trained technician. Most patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, although relief can take up to a week.
How we can help
After a thorough examination, Dr. Murray may suggest a plan to treat your TMJ disorder. This treatment plan may include relaxation techniques, a referral to a physiotherapist, a chiropractor or a behavioural therapist to help you ease muscle pain. Other treatment options may include medicine for pain, inflammation or tense muscles.
Enhancing your smile and reducing wrinkles
It may not seem like it, but injectables have been in the market for a couple of decades now, and it is likely that you know someone who is already an enthusiastic user of Botox Cosmetic® or Dysport®. These are the two brands of Botulinum Toxin that have been in the mainstream market for facial aesthetics. Dentists in Alberta can be certified to administer Botox injections on their patients.
At Lethbridge Dental Surgical Suites, we provide dental BOTOX® injections for those patients who want to enhance their smile even further. BOTOX® is a safe treatment with virtually no side effects, and it takes effect almost immediately. These injections relax tense muscles in the face and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes and forehead for a more youthful appearance. Voluntary movements, such as chewing and making facial expressions, remain intact. The procedure temporarily weakens the muscles, but the treatment wears off over time. If you are considering the benefits of cosmetic Botox®, please call our office for a no-cost consultation. Our team will help you determine whether or not this is the right solution for you. Health Benefits
of Hot Tubs & Swim Spas Soaking in warm water is one of the oldest forms of therapy, dating back to the Romans. Even then, people knew that soaking in a hot bath could effectively treat pain and other ailments. Modern hot tubs have taken this ancient principle and perfected it, adding therapeutic massage jets to increase the healing effects of soaking in hot water.
While hot tubs are great simply for relaxing or unwinding after a long day and connecting with family, they can also provide relief from many common ailments like headaches or back pain. They do this with a combination of heat, buoyancy and massage therapy.
HEAT
For most people, warmth is associated with rest and relaxation. What most people don’t consider is that heat can also be used for both pain relief as well as to improve circulation.
MASSAGE THERAPY
Massage not only feels good, it also helps increase blood flow to the areas being massaged. This increased blood flow also helps clear out toxins that build up due to insufficient blood flow and can reduce pain and inflammation.
Individually, each of these elements are used in the treatment of various ailments. When combined in a hot tub, they are able to work together to provide a more thorough treatment. The relief coming from the buoyancy of the water combined with the cardiovascular benefits of heat and massage can help improve a variety of ailments, from stress to arthritis.
REDUCED STRESS
Hot tubs are the perfect stress relievers. First off, they take you away from the daily grind; letting you relax and clear your mind.
Heat opens up (“vasodilates”) your blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily throughout your body. This increased blood flow also means an increase in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, which helps heal damaged tissue.
Not only that, the combination of heat, buoyancy and massage help to relax your muscles and relieve aches and pains; taking away tension in your body and allowing you to relax further.
BUOYANCY
Hot tubs are also able to help treat some kinds of headaches. The heat and steam of the hot tub water can help fight congestion and has been shown to help with sinus headaches.
Heat also increases the “extensibility” of muscles and connective tissue, increasing flexibility and range of motion.
When you’re submerged in water, the effects of gravity are reduced by 90%. This reduces stress on your muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments.
According to the arthritis foundation, immersing yourself in water not only reduces the force of gravity that’s compressing the joint, it also provides support for sore limbs. This support can help decrease swelling and inflammation as well as increasing circulation. Quirk - 22
HELPS HEADACHES
By dilating the blood vessels, hot tubs can also decrease pressure in your head, easing headache symptoms.
IMPROVED SLEEP
Hot tubs warm your body. When your body is warm, you tend to fall asleep quicker and sleep better throughout the night. Hot tubs also relieve muscle tension and allows your body to relax. The improved blood circulation from the heat and massage provided by the hot tub reduce inflammation and soothe tired, achy muscles. The less tense your muscles, the easier it is to fall asleep.
DIABETES MANAGEMENT
In some studies, regular hot tub use has been used to reduce blood glucose level in people with diabetes, although more research still needs to be done. What is undeniable is that hot tubs can help diabetes patients improve their circulation. The combination of heat, buoyancy and massage work together to deliver more nutrient rich blood to the muscles. This reduces the severity of symptoms related to poor circulation that some diabetes patients experience.
SPORTS RECOVERY
Find yourself stiff or sore after a workout? Soak in your hot tub for 1530 minutes! The combination of increased blood flow and decreased strain on your muscles and joints helps reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process.
REDUCED CHRONIC PAIN AND ARTHRITIS
Not only can hot tubs help relieve pain brought on by physical exertion, it can also be used to help manage chronic pain from conditions like arthritis.
According to Bruce E. Becker, director of the National Aquatics & Sports Medicine Institute, warm water therapy “makes the joints looser”. This decreases swelling and inflammation in the joints. Becker also says that warm water therapy “reduces pain and it seems to have a somewhat prolonged effect that goes beyond the period of immersion”.
Heat therapy is also a proven method for treating lower back pain. In an article on how heat can improve lower back pain Vert Mooney, Medical Director of U.S. Spine and Sport, stressed the importance of increased flexibility in treating back pain . Heat therapy, he explains, increases flexibility which in turn decreases stiffness. This combined with increased blood circulation brought on by a targeted massage, make hot tubs the ideal way to manage lower back pain.

Mindfulness
by Jean Van Kleek
For the past few years it is difficult to find any self-awareness, or healing program that doesn’t include the word “mindfulness” as part of its introduction. But what exactly is being mindful?
Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them—without believing, for instance, that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment.
Though it has its roots in Buddhist meditation, a secular practice of mindfulness has entered the Western mainstream in recent years. The concept of mindfulness sounds very simple, but in a world where looking into possibilities of the future and re-hashing the past are everyday ways we live, it can be difficult to think only about what is happening right now in this moment. Now is all we really have for sure that is real. Even by the time you finish reading this sentence, the first part of it is in the past.
Why is it important to learn mindfulness? When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. Studies into the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation have proven positive in treating anxiety as well as lowering stress hormones and decreasing inflammation in the body. There are many modalities that incorporate mindfulness as part of their program. Locally, there are meditation groups, yoga, horse therapy and Floating centres (REST (restricted environment stimulation technique) and more. Each of these provide an environment where mindfulness plays a large part in healing the mind and body.
Although I don’t believe there is an organized program here yet, Forest Therapy has become a very popular way to re-connect with nature. Forest Therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest Therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, which translates to "forest bathing." Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. Anyone who enjoys communing with nature already knows how beneficial it can be to surround oneself with the sounds of birds, babbling creeks, and a breeze whispering through the trees. Forest therapy takes things a step further with guided, purposeful ventures into nature.
Whatever you choose to help you become more aware of living in the moment… remember it’s called the “present” because it is a gift, and it’s the only thing we have for sure.

What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave treatment involves the application of short, frequent, and high intensity bursts of mechanical energy (in the form of a shockwave) into soft-tissue that is injured, scarred, or contains adhesions, is painful, or inflamed. This energy shock is not electrical, but rather a rapid high frequency vibration in the form of a Radial Pressure Wave (RPW). When appropriately applied, shockwave can increase local blood flow, improve healing response, break apart scar tissue and adhesions, reduce muscle spasm, and directly decrease pain. Most patients tolerate the treatments well, and report only mild discomfort.
Shockwave therapy has shown to effectively treat the following conditions: • Feet - heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis • Elbow – tennis and golfers elbow • Shoulder - calcific tendinosis of rotator cuff muscles • Knee - patellar tendonitis • Hip – bursitis • Lower leg - shin splints • Upper leg - Iliotibial band friction syndrome • Back pain - lumbar and cervical spine regions and chronic muscular pain
How does shockwave treatment work? The effects of shockwave occur across several levels: 1. Cell Level Change – shockwave stimulus affects the chemical environment of tissues at a cellular level. This causes changes to free radicals which boost the release of the substances that help to prevent pain and inflammation. 2. Blood Flow Change – Normal blood flow is critical to the healing process, and shockwaves create a revascularization effect. This type of stimulus redirects new blood flow into the affected area which improves soft tissue healing and regeneration. 3. Muscle Tone Reduction – Shockwave treatment reduces the contractile activity of muscle and can also break patterns of neurocognitive pain that are associated with chronic conditions. This effectively decreases muscle tone and spasm, and has specific benefits with eliminating trigger points. 4. Pain Reduction – Shockwave pulses directly affect the nerve fibers that transmit pain signals to our brain. Through the Gate Control Mechanism, shockwaves impact the interneurons in the A-β fibers which prevent the communication of pain. Does shockwave therapy hurt? Most patients experience mild discomfort during treatment, but it is generally well tolerated. The initial discomfort typically fades as the area becomes desensitized as it is being treated. The intensity of the
Quirk - 26
stimulus will be adjusted depending on your comfort level, and can gradually ramp it up to minimize discomfort. Shockwave Therapy purposefully creates an inflammatory response in injured soft tissue, so you may also experience mild discomfort following treatment. Patients should not apply ice or take anti-inflammatories after shockwave treatment, as this inflammatory healing response is beneficial and shouldn’t be reduced.
How many treatments will I need? Most conditions require three treatments at one-week intervals. However, more chronic or complicated conditions may require up to five treatments. Most patients experience significant improvement while undergoing the first three treatments, and the healing process will continue for several weeks afterwards.
How successful is Shockwave? Does it really work? Shockwave Therapy is one of the most widely researched rehabilitation modalities used in clinics, with increasing numbers of scientific studies added each year. The majority of research validates the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave and shows successful treatment rates of up to 90%! Is Shockwave Therapy covered by insurance? As the treatment is provided through a chiropractic clinic, if you have extended health benefits that include chiropractic you may have a portion (or all) of your treatment covered.

The Nature of an Artist Tony Partridge
"North of Yellowknife", 2006, acrylics, 4x5 ft. Quirk - 28
Profile: Tony Partridge
by Mary Anne Atkins
“Tony is a prolific artist with over 30 years experience using charcoals, oils, acrylics, watercolors and a broad range of graphic mediums and materials.”
“Carbondale River, upstream headwaters" 2018, acrylics, 3x4ft
For many who enjoy the art of painting, it’s hard to imagine having nine canvases in various stages of development all set up and ready to go at any time. But for Tony Partridge, this is his world. While this is not his favourite way to paint, this prolific artist is often known to do just that. And while he often works with the angst many artists experience as part of their journey; make no mistake… art is his passion. His whole life has been a roadmap leading to where and who he is right now.
Born in 1948 in Montreal to Richard and Jean Partridge, Tony grew up amidst the smells and detritus of oil paints and turpentine in an atmosphere of dedication to a work ethic. Tony’s father is also his mentor; he was an artist who made his living as an inspired commercial artist and illustrator. When Richard saw that Tony shared his passion, he spent countless hours teaching his young son “the art of art”. By the time Tony was twelve, he was being shown the importance of knowing and painting the human form.
Tony has always been an ardent lover of nature in all forms. He speaks of the massive forest areas surrounding Montreal where, as a young person, he would wander around and lose himself in the abundant vastness of the wooded areas-a wilderness which he says is no longer there today. He worries that Canada is one of only five countries in the world that has significant large areas of wilderness left. Tony is a prolific artist with over 30 years experience using charcoals, oils, acrylics, watercolors and a broad range of graphic mediums and materials.
From 1970 to 1974 Tony studied painting, drawing and printmaking at the Alberta College of Art. Later, he studied at the University of Lethbridge from 1983 to1987, majoring in these same graphic arts.
For 30 years, Tony worked with Disability Supports and Advocacy for several Lethbridge agencies. During this time he also worked in developing emotional and artistic guidance programs for children. Tony also taught Introductory Drawing and Painting at Lethbridge Community College and the Bowman Arts Center through their community education programs. He continues to provide occasional Art Immersion and Art Therapy programs by contract with the local public school system in the Crowsnest Pass.
When Tony retired in 2012, he and his wife Myrna Dembicki moved to the Crowsnest Pass where Myrna is an assistant Principal at Horace Allen Elementary school in Coleman. This move, and new found
freedom has allowed Tony many more hours in which to paint. It also has provided wonderful opportunities for his work “en Plein Air” (outdoors-for you non-artists out there) which he admits, he does just for the pleasure of it. Watercolors are his choice of medium for these works, and from them, he creates larger interpretive landscapes in Acrylic on canvas later in his studio. “It is like meditation. It is a retreat—a monkish existence that sustains me.” he says.
Tony quietly mentions “the act of painting for me-is not necessarily a pleasurable experience. More accurately, it’s even obsessive. When I paint, it is the culmination of a deep foundation of training/education, discipline and focus. It is not a hobby.”
As it is for most professional artists and musicians, it can be a very painful, yet ultimately rewarding experience. While artists may have an innate ability, it’s only through many years of honing their skills that true expression is shared. Tony Partridge has had two solo exhibitions in 2018. One at Casa in Lethbridge in March of this year and the other currently till December 10th at the Public Art Gallery in the town of Frank. While these exhibitions have been great, he still loves the interaction and excitement of group shows. Quirk - 29
“the act of painting for me-is not necessarily a pleasurable experience. More accurately, it’s even obsessive. When I paint, it is the culmination of a deep foundation of training/education, discipline and focus. It is not a hobby.” Tony’s early works included what he calls “a dark work period” that were part of a show named “Mixed Narratives”. The show was very well received and featured artists Debbie Goldstein and Jurek Panek as well.
It’s Tony’s passion and love of nature that has led him to focus on environmental issues and his concerns over diminishing world forests along with the extinction of thousands of animal species. Tony relates that, since 1970, 60% of animal species in the world have become extinct or threatened. These concerns have no doubt influenced his return to more landscapes such as his latest painting called “The Source” with attention to the minutiae featured in these works instead of what he calls, the “whole spectrum”.
Although Tony does occasionally take a break from his art to pursue his passion for music as a bass player and an amateur "The Source" 2018, acrylics, 3x4ft
percussionist with the Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra, he never wanders far from his love of “Plein Air” painting. With these two loves in Tony’s life you can easily imagine the invitation he recently received being music to his ears.
He has been invited to be an “Artist in Residence” for a two week “Plein Air” symposium in the country of Poland in July of 2019. This would allow Tony to not only learn, meet many other artists and produce art, but do so with minimal expenses.
While Tony has not yet made a decision on this exciting venture, I can imagine artists everywhere cheering him on and waiting happily for his return when they know he will, as always, share his knowledge and his art with artists everywhere.
*A member of the “Artist Collective Studio” in Coleman; Tony’s work, along with three other artists, is available for viewing by appointment. These artists are:
Kari Lehr: specializes in wildlife
Crystal Leach: an illustrator and phenomenal tattoo artist Nichole Yanota: works as an illustrator and graphic artist.

Winter dog walks
Dogs love to have fun in the snow and ice and just like you, their needs will be different when the weather changes. Keeping warm, seasonal hazards and winter walks can all be potentially problematic, so make sure you’re prepared before winter comes.
When it’s chilly, protecting dogs feet during exercise is important. Once you've finished your winter dog walk, take care to remove any packed snow or ice from between the toes of your dogs paw pads. This also removes any moisture that can get trapped and cause sores.
Short-haired dogs, older dogs and dogs with health problems will appreciate it if you buy them a dog jacket for when they go outside, especially when it’s chilly.
When on a winter dog walk your dog may start to lick or eat the snow. This leaves many owners asking the question is ice bad for dogs? Ice being poisonous to dogs is a myth; ice can however be difficult to chew and could cause dental issues to any dog eating it. So if your walking your dog and they digest a small amount of ice, no harm done, just make try not to encourage your pooch to eat large amounts of sharp ice as it could have a negative effect on their teeth.
THE
Watch out for salt and other de-icers that are spread on footpaths and roads. They may irritate the pads and cause bleeding, so be sure to look out for them.

LESSONS I’VE LEARNED FROM MY DOGS By Jean Van Kleek Another holiday season has passed… another time to share with loved ones and family. If we are very lucky, we have a wonderful bond with those who raised us and those we grew up with, however, those sharing our DNA aren’t necessarily family in the broader sense. Unfortunately, sometimes we aren’t close to our members of our family for a variety of reasons. What is family? I believe the true test of family, is the circle of people who support, understand and love you unconditionally. Dogs inherently know this. Their pack is made of those who protect and love them. They never welcome those who hurt or abuse them. “Finding your tribe” is a phrase often used to describe those close to us. Finding your tribe is surrounding yourself with those who share a commonality with you, the people who give you a sense of belonging and support. How do you know when you are with your tribe? You know when it’s easy to be around them, when no walls are necessary to put up for protection, and when nothing is forced. These are your people… keep these family and friends close to your heart. They bring you joy and comfort, not only for the holiday season, but always.
“They bring you joy and comfort, not only for the holiday season, but always.”

This recipe is in loving memory of my best friend, Kiwi.
She passed away peacefully in my arms, December 2018. She was my joy and my rock. There was nothing but happiness through our journey together over the past fourteen plus years. She will always be missed and loved.
Kiwi, this one’s for you! Rest in peace, my little one.

The Lethbridge & District Humane Society has been a no-kill haven since its inception in early 1970. It is their goal to take care of strays and abandoned pets until a home can be found for them to thrive and have a new start in life. Some animals stay for years before finding a family to love them.
With the support of Park Pet Hospital & Northside Veterinary Clinic, Quirk would like to introduce a few of the residents who have been waiting for quite some time. Rescued pets are exceptionally loving,
and very grateful for a chance to be with you. If you have room in your home and your heart, please give the Humane Society a call to give one of these furry friends a chance to belong, and be loved.
They are a gift!
