From The Publisher Traditionally in this section of the magazine we introduce you to the stories inside each issue. This time, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge a wonderful, spirited woman who resides in Fort MacLeod. Dorothy Asuchak, Jean Van Kleek lovingly known to friends and family as Dot, has Photo: Thomas Porter spent the majority of her life helping others in any way she can. This 85 year young lady has volunteered with the Health Care Auxiliary Association for over 20 years where she has served as President and Vice-President, worked with the District Health Foundation for over 11 years, as well as volunteering with Meal on Wheels and Neighborhood Watch. Dorothy also serves her community through her work initiating and overseeing the “Vial for Life” program. This program stores vital health information including physician and pharmacist contacts, allergies and other medical information in a vial in the refrigerator. A fridge magnet alerts emergency services that the client is part of the Vial of Life program. The list doesn’t end there; Dorothy also takes the time to drive seniors to appointments, helps with gardens, along with planning and baking for events. Congratulations, Dorothy, on a well-deserved award. You are truly an inspiration!

Living While Wounded

I’m conducting an experiment. Not with beakers and computers or any of the usual nerd tools – I’m more of an art geek myself. But there’s this hypothesis I picked up and I’m testing it with all the dispassion of a hardcore scientist. We humans are emotional creatures, good at both suppressing feelings and wallowing in them. But the trick has always been to land somewhere between the trainwreck and the robot. To feel what must be felt and move on. Wouldn’t we all like a formula for that?

My summer has been a brutal one which is how this experiment began. I was desperately in search of that magic formula. Enter hypothesis: when you suffer a trial or disappointment, give yourself one glorious, agonizing minute to descend into feeling. And when that minute is up, put it away for awhile and do something. You can always come back to the grief, in fact, you certainly will.

I worked as a nanny in Manhattan’s upper east side years ago. I loved the children in my care, but the five year old was a seething volcano, ready to erupt at the slightest provocation. Considering the destruction the little darling could cause, he may as well have been spewing lava. One day he bounced a ball into his freshly constructed craft project and broke it. You would have supposed the nuclear holocaust had begun, so wild was he with anger and

grief. I tried to salvage what had been a pleasant day but “Enter he couldn’t see anything through the tears that he squeezed out for hours until I worried he’d have to be hydrated hypothesis: intravenously. And the solution to his woes was so obvious when you suffer and simple it can be expressed entirely in a single breath: a trial or GLUE.

Of course adult problems are more sophisticated, but not even grownups can see clearly when putting all effort into squeezing out as many tears as possible. I’ve failed, I was betrayed, he doesn’t love me…whatever it is, for that glorious, agonizing minute we must submit to the cost of being human. But grief is only one part of being human – it shouldn’t be treated as the whole.

So does the one minute rule actually work? I think it does. Sometimes you have to allow yourself several of those minutes in a day, and often a minute is not long enough. But to put any reasonable limitation on your suffering feels more like moving THROUGH something. It’s living while wounded. That is very human. And that is the victory.

disappointment, give yourself one glorious, agonizing minute to descend into feeling. And when that minute is up, put it away for awhile and do something.”

The Casa Verde Project Thinking About Greening Your Home? Part 2

Stella & Rudy Reger photo by Stan Ashbee

“This home will truly be a first on many levels and is a very exciting project and culmination of a dream for this couple, who have been in the business of offering energy efficient products for over 20 years.”

“Every aspect of this home’s design has been geared toward both energy efficiency and longevity.”

In the May issue, we first introduced you to Casa Verde, the net zero home being built by Rudy and Stella Reger, of Energy Smart Canada. The home is now well on its way to becoming a reality. In this issue we’d like to share with you the progress of the build and how it looks to date. Every aspect of this home’s design has been geared toward both energy efficiency and longevity.

Rather than powering fans to redistribute accumulated warm air downward, we have air returns installed about 30' above the main floor level. By taking in this warmer make-up air, rather than the cooler air at floor level, the efficiency of our heating system improves.

The house will be net zero, with the end game plan to become completely off-grid. If you are building a new home with geothermal and solar, it doesn’t make sense to not have the rest be energy efficient as well. To that end, the Regers have been working with award-winning Dave Wolfe of Greener Homes, enlisting his expertise in the field of energy efficient homes. Cal De Jager of Touchstone Homes is involved in the construction of the envelope. The

building envelope of a house consists of its roof, sub floor, exterior doors, windows and of course, the exterior walls. The envelope construction and materials play a crucial role in the overall energy efficiency of the home. Each part of this home’s design uses the most up to date energy efficient materials on the market. In fact, the wall design was created by Cal De Jager and this is the very first home to utilize his design. This home will truly be a first on many levels and is a very exciting project and culmination of a dream for this couple, who have been in the business of offering energy efficient products for over 20 years. Every detail, large and small, of this home has been well-thought out to maximize energy efficiency. From the build, to esthetics, to appliances, each facet contributes to the overall greening of the home.

The pipes you see in the bottom of the still dry pond is the heating and cooling/energy source. Water will be circulated through the pipes and the heat will be extracted from the water for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer called geothermal field This is a 6-ton geothermal pond loop being installed.

Putting the finishing touches on with the rock around the top 8 ft down helps keep the banks stability and keep it from erosion Digging the pond which will be used as the heating and cooling source for the home(geothermal field) irrigation, fire suppression, swimming.

“The pond was recently filled with over three million gallon of water and will also be used irrigation, fire suppression, swimming and fishing.”

The home will also feature “smart” technology, with internet-enabled electrical outlets, plugs, power strips and switches. They add convenience to any appliance and can make a big dent in your electric bills by keeping unused appliances turned off and reducing “standby” consumption. You can turn devices on and off remotely from anywhere with an internet connection, set automation rules for intelligent home behavior that adapts to your own lifestyle and usage habits, and monitor power consumption in real time.

Construction began early Spring with the framing of the house. Next was building the wall system, which has two layers of insulation on the outside rather than the inside because of having the structural integrity of the wall on the inside. This creates an R50 value that is more than double the provincial code lessening the cost for heating and cooling and raises the comfort level. For the attic, the minimum requirement is R49, Casa Verde will have a R100 rating, also over twice the required amount.

The insulation consists of spray foam and additional batt insulation and an inch of styrofoam insulation-backed siding to complete the envelope. The cladding they chose to use is hardie board. It is best known for its Quirk - 12

longevity, appearance and resistance to fires and storms. This siding is completely rot and insect resistant and can even handle salt spray from the ocean. Hardie board siding is 90 percent sand and cement which is what makes it fire-resistant.

The Regers decided to go with the Accelera® E Heat Pump Water Heater from Stiebel-Eltron, which they have sold and installed at Energy Smart for years. They have found them to be not only extremely efficient but very reliable. For every watt that an Accelera's compressor and fan uses, the equivalent of 3-5 watts of hot water is generated. They believe this to be the most efficient water heating technology available. The lowflush toilets in the home are made by Caroma and interestingly enough, have the tank hidden in behind the wall with just the seat/base of the toilet actually in the bathroom. This is a great space saver, and visually appealing.

style, triple pane glass, compared to standard dual pane windows. The triple pane glass allows two more sides of glass to have coatings applied to help keep the heat inside in the winter and the cool inside during the summer.

Outside of the home, over 52 trees have been planted. The “pond” has been dug out and pipes placed in the bottom for the geothermal field. Water will be circulated through the pipes and the heat will be extracted from the water for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

Stella is not so sure). There is even a small island in the pond! Rocks have been placed up to eight feet down the banks of the pond to help maintain stability of the bank and help to prevent erosion.

A trench has been dug to house the electrical cable for the solar array that will produce all the electricity for the home. They have also installed a septic tank (for sewage) and cistern (for pot-able water).

The home is really starting to take shape, and with the majority of the shell completed and systems being put in place, next will be the interior finishings; cupboards, appliances, painting and décor. While Rudy and Stella will be showing their new home by appointment to those interested in greener homes, that isn’t the reason they are building. This home has been their dream. Rudy says they wanted to build a “forever” home that reflects their values. They value lessening their carbon footprint, living in a space that contains clean air, not depending on the ups and downs of fossil fuel costs, and providing a home for family that will last. If by doing this, it creates a curiosity for other people to go greener, he’s more than happy to answer any questions they may have. Quirk - 14

Alberta Weeds out a Path for the

Legalization of Cannabis On October 17 of this year, big changes are coming for Canada with the legalization of marijuana. Canada is the first G7 country and the second country in the world, next to Uruguay, in making recreational cannabis legal nationwide. The eyes of the world will be watching as this legalization unfolds. Several other countries have decriminalized marijuana, while others like the U.S. and the Netherlands have legalized sales and consumption in parts of the country. Whether you are for or against the impending legalization, there are some facts that led to this position. The government states that non-medical use of cannabis has grown despite the ban. If Prohibition taught us one lesson, it’s that making a drug illegal doesn’t stop people from using it. When Canada and the U.S. banned the sale of alcohol in the 1920s and 1930s, sales went underground and organized crime pocketed the profits. The federal government faced the same problem with cannabis. Nonmedical cannabis has been illegal since 1923. Despite risking a criminal record, people use non-medical cannabis in Canada at some of the highest rates in the world. One of the reasons for legalization, says a Canadian task force, is that “the current approach to marijuana prohibition is not working.” Governments at all levels have been working on rules for growing and selling cannabis, as well as lowering risk.

The intent of legalizing non-medical cannabis is to help keep it out of the hands of youth and keep money out of the hands of criminals, says Jody Wilson Raybould, Canada’s Justice minister. Legalization is also intended to reduce the burden marijuana use has on the justice system as well as impose quality control on the products sold. The federal government has watched closely and learned from other countries and states in the U.S. on how to implement the new laws. As of June this year, the Alberta government received over 600 applications for licenses, although that isn’t to say they will all be granted. Anyone who wants to run a cannabis store in Alberta will undergo a background check, ranging Quirk - 18

by Jean Van Kleek

from tax records to criminal links. The province will operate all online sales. Cannabis stores in Alberta must be stand-alone and have a specific cannabis licence . This means cannabis cannot be sold in the same store as alcohol, medicinal drugs or tobacco. The stores must be at least 100 metres away from healthcare facilities, schools and land reserved for schools. Currently there is no cap on the total number of retail licences being issued, however, no person, or entity can hold more than 15% of retail cannabis licenses in the province. The maximum number of licences a person(s) or entity can hold will be reviewed and may be adjusted according to the actual number of existing licences in July 2019. Anyone in Alberta interested in applying for a license will need to contact the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission for information. They will also need to apply to their municipality in order to seek approval on a retail location. The sales of edible cannabis products is set for July 2019, as the government takes this time to formulate regulations. As far as consumption is concerned, The rules are similar to tobacco laws when it comes to weed smoking. Motor vehicles, the workplace, and public parks are off limits. For those who rely on weed for medical use, the rules are the same as tobacco and e-cigarettes.

Driving while under the influence of marijuana will be treated the same as driving under the influence of alcohol in Alberta. The current Traffic Safety Act will be amended to provide additional tools to address all forms of impaired driving. This means things like expanded zero tolerance for drivers in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, which extends its zero tolerance of alcohol to cannabis. Provincial sanctions for cannabis consumption will be the same as those for existing criminal impaired-driving offences, like driving under the influence of alcohol. This means things like immediate 90-day license suspension, vehicle seizure, and remedial education.

“Legalization is also intended to reduce the burden marijuana use has on the justice system as well as impose quality control on the products sold.” The Alberta government has put into place four policy priorities. These priorities being:

1. Keeping cannabis out of the hands of children 2. Protecting public health 3. Promoting safety on roads, in workplaces and in public spaces 4. Limiting the illegal market for cannabis

They will be using these priorities as a plan for action from which it can measure success in the long run.

Hypnotherapy Balance the Brain - Heal the Body During my 40 year nursing career throughout North America, I worked with hundreds of patients who hovered between life and death while receiving information from a higher place. They report that life isn’t over until we believe it’s over…until we are ready to transition. We watch time and time again as dying patients somehow manage to delay their final curtain in order to see a loved one, or complete something very important to them. One of the experiences I witnessed was with a 67 year old man in Ontario who overcame Stage 4 lymphoma by connecting with what we refer to as his Higher Self. These people confirm that the body is beautifully designed to heal itself if and when the choice is made to do so, as described in Anita Moorjani’s bestseller “Dying to Be Me”, a poignant account of her challenge with cancer, her near-death experience and her journey back to perfect health.

My hypnosis clients learn that with each thought, feeling, emotion and belief, they carry the seed for how well the body will heal via hormonal release. The stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, can overwhelm the body thereby placing the cells at risk. Every cell is a blueprint for the biological makeup of an individual. In order to allow the body to heal itself, we must strive to remain balanced, integrated and healthy. In doing so, we are more able to communicate clear messages to our bodies at the cellular level, triggering the healthy responses we desire from them.

Every one of us is made of over 50 trillion cells in the body, with each cell listening for commands and direction from the captain of the ship (the brain). Commands based in fear, anxiety, or depression are damaging to the body. Your brain has a left hemisphere that keeps you on the straight and narrow through logic, strategy and rationalization, and a right hemisphere with creativity that goes beyond the boundaries of physics as we know it. It is intuitive, spontaneous, and uninhibited and it is the part you enter with deep hypnosis. I see it as being directly connected to the heart that knows exactly what we need. What affects the ability of the heart to guide us? Our thoughts, feelings, emotions and beliefs. Indigenous cultures worldwide tell us that we should be thinking with the heart, not with the head, because our thinking can compromise our decision-making skills when our brain is filled with confusing information.

How we deal with experiences is paramount to building and maintaining health. The captain of the ship needs to remain calm and collected, sending clear messages while under duress in order to enable his crew (cells) to ward off events that may cause damage to the body they strive so hard to protect. Although we enjoy our happy moments as they are an integral part of a balanced life, we don’t really grow from our moments of bliss. It’s under moments of duress that most of our growing occurs. These moments force us to look inward and examine who we are and what we are really made of as we engage in the human experience. This is why it is critical to maintain clarity, and also why hypnosis is so beneficial in the healing process.

What has become clearly apparent to me, is that no matter what individual struggle or imbalance each of my hypnotherapy clients is experiencing, they all want to feel better. They may have tried analytical/talk therapy for a number of years and never really felt much better because the thinking mind cannot “think” itself into feeling better. In order to manifest our deeper needs, it is important to manifest a more deeply felt experience inside the heart, where it is felt more profoundly and truthfully.

“Using deep hypnosis, we bypass the conscious mind to connect with the part wherein virtually anything is possible.”

Heather Gunn RN, CCHt www.onespirit.ca 403-894-2622

In June of this year, I attended the Science and Spirituality international conference in Nanaimo where the speakers provided proof that the body onespiritall@gmail.com does, indeed, respond to our every thought. We watched an ultrasound video of a 3-inch cancerous bladder tumour within a middle-aged woman in China disappearing in less than 3 minutes through chanting and prayer. Simply put, every thought you have is followed by an emotion (happiness, sadness, anxiety, joy) and every emotion releases a hormone that prompts you to take an action of some sort (eating, smoking, drinking, shopping, crying). These actions become habitual and, if repeated over the years, will develop your character. The body suffers down to the cellular level as the cells listen for and obey faulty commands as the stress hormones shift into high gear.

Clinical research has shown that hypnosis helps to heal the body. Scientific literature is rife with clinical studies that validate the power of hypnosis. Using deep hypnosis, we bypass the conscious mind to connect with the part wherein virtually anything is possible. We dip into the creative side of your brain, promoting self-healing by relaxing the body, releasing tension and strengthening the body’s own immune system, bringing you into a state of balance and well-being. Through hypnosis, we can focus positive energy on a specific part of the body, enhancing the healing process by connecting with the cells while improving emotions and amending faulty beliefs.

Deep hypnosis is an excellent means of creating a healing environment for your body, allowing you to connect and communicate with the cells that are open and waiting for you to guide them in your quest for health.

Southern Alberta Hero Rides High as She Challenges Life & Amazing Race Canada

by Jean Van Kleek

The Southern Alberta region is anything but a densely populated area. That’s why it’s even more special that we are home to such a surprising array of talent. What we don’t have in numbers, we make up for in heart. Over the last few years we have produced a Canadian Idol winner in the very talented singer/songwriter, Theo Tams, a “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” winner in Tara Popowich, who wowed the judges and viewers with her style and personality, and in 2016 Lowell and Julie Taylor won the hearts of Canadians during their participation on Amazing Race Canada. Although they didn’t win the race, every Canadian couple wanted to be “just like them”.

Quirk - 22

Once again, Southern Alberta has an opportunity to proudly showcase one of our own on “Amazing Race Canada, Hero Edition”. Nancy Csabay, of Taber, made the cut for the show from literally thousands of entries with her hero partner, Mellisa Hollingsworth, from the Red Deer area.

Nancy, her husband, Tony and daughter, Kate, live just north of Taber on TNK Farms where they breed and train top barrel horses. Csabay also offers motivational retreats that involve the horses. Nancy has won many awards in women’s barrel racing and is a two-time Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Champion. She also won a round in the Calgary Stampede’s barrel racing event in 2015.

“Nancy Csabay, of Taber, made the cut for the show from literally thousands of entries with her hero partner, Mellisa Hollingsworth, from the Red Deer area.” Nancy’s win at the 2015 Calgary Stampede was especially poignant as it came on the heels of her battle with cancer in 2013. She took some time off to focus on healing, and once she beat the cancer, she returned with a renewed sense of purpose. Nancy says she’s changed her outlook since having cancer and adds “I’ve learned that it’s more about the journey than the destination”. She tries to do her best living in each moment rather than focussing on the end result. Make no mistake though, this woman is still very competitive, but now it’s more about doing her personal best. It’s very clear that Nancy faces life and anything it puts in front of her head-on. She celebrates the successes, and never stays down when thrown off the horse.

Nancy’s father, Arnold Haraga, was the 1970 Canadian All-Around champion while her mom, Kaye (nee Thierman), won the Miss Rodeo Canada title. Nancy grew up on the road and learned to ride before she could even walk. I mentioned to Nancy that I couldn’t help but notice how intense her piercing blue eyes became in her barrel racing pictures when she was “in the zone”. She laughed and said she got that from her dad. He too, was very intense with an intense glare during competition. Nancy found out about the Amazing Race Canada auditions from a friend’s post on Facebook in October. She has always been a huge fan of the show and decided to share the post with friends and asked who would like to audition with her. Nancy was amazed at how many friends

wanted to join her, but it was Olympic medalist, Mellisa Hollingsworth, who stood out to Nancy as the choice for her partner.

“Before the show, I didn’t know Mellisa well at all. She had interviewed me at the Calgary Stampede one year and that’s the only conversation up until the show that we had had,” she says. “Mellisa saw my post on Facebook and sent me a picture of her and Jon with an Amazing Race envelope, saying we should do this together. I knew she had a great story with her being an Olympian and since it’s the hero edition, Mellisa was the perfect choice. Hollingsworth was a national champion in skeleton within three months of entering the sport and earned a bronze medal at the 2006 Turin Olympics. She also has been to the podium for many World Cup finishes.

The nation got behind Mellisa at the 2010 Olympics in Whistler, she was in silver-medal position and launched onto her sled for the final with a personal-best start time. She would eventually hit the wall at turn 6, knocking her into fifth place. She said she felt like she had let her country down at the time, which resulted in thousands of letters and emails of support from Canadians who shared their stories about moving on from disappointment.

Both Nancy and Mellisa are true champions, having surmounted disappointment and surviving life’s challenges as they carry on and thrive. They were chosen out of thousands of entries to audition for the show. Nancy says she thinks they were chosen because they both have stories people can relate to. While this may be true, I also believe it’s because these two woman stand out as earthy, honest and a true representation of what it means to be Canadian.

Searching for crabs

Photo courtesy: CTV While Nancy and Mellisa share a winning spirit, they really didn’t know each other before the show. Nancy says at times it proved to be a challenge not knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses. For instance, she didn’t know how hard to push Mellisa during the challenges to encourage her, or if pushing would do the opposite. She likens it to training with the horses, different approaches work for different personalities. As it turned out, they built an amazing friendship throughout the five weeks of shooting the show. In fact, even though each team was competing to win, they all became very close and still stay in touch. They were sincerely saddened when teams were sent home.

One of the highlights for Nancy of taking part in the show, was travelling to parts of Canada she hadn’t seen before. She loved it all, but especially enjoyed the wild, rustic beauty of Dawson City, Yukon.

When asked about what the most difficult challenge was to date on the show, she immediately said “the blueberry pie! It was the worst!” During that particular episode, each member of the team had to eat a WHOLE blueberry pie. Not just any old pie, it was a HUGE pie! Nancy says the crust was very thick too and even though she loves blueberry pie, this challenge was a lot to handle. Several teams were throwing up as they tried to complete the challenge. It didn’t help that Mellisa didn’t like blueberry pie at all and struggled even with the first few bites. Nancy, being the trooper she is, helped finish Mellisa’s pie after eating her own. Barely getting through the pies and becoming way behind, they reluctantly used their pass for the fairly challenge to help catch up.This part of the leg put Nancy and Mellisa behind in placement, but they worked their way up again during the next leg.

An episode I found quite funny, was when the card read “who is handy?” Nancy squealed “I love to build things… I’ll do it!” only to find out it was a “hand dance” that involved intricate movements of the hands and complicated instruction. Nancy kept trying and trying and was obviously near the end of her rope with frustration when suddenly those “intense steely blue eyes” appeared. She was in the zone, she was going to get through it, and right then and there, she succeeded.

The show, much like real life, presents situations that catch you off guard, the unexpected that you need to find a way to manage in order to carry on. And, as Nancy says she discovered through her own life changing moments, things are best dealt with by living in the moment. Becoming overwhelmed just isn’t an option when putting one foot in front of the other. When you think of how many miles you need to travel, it becomes difficult to carry on, but when you break it down into steps, the miles take care of themselves. The show requires much more than athleticism. It requires the ability to adjust quickly to situations you can’t control and often facing fears head on. And much like real life, it’s amazing what you can accomplish and overcome when trying to stay in the game.

Running to load Durians

Although Nancy was excited to take part in the show to challenge herself and travel, her main goal was to show her daughter there is nothing to fear, and to never give up. And as she enters her fifth decade on this planet, she wanted to let other women know life isn’t over at forty. She says “Whatever it is they want to do just grab the reins and do it!” We learn from everything we do, including failures. That’s why there really is no failure, it’s just another opportunity to grow. If you never put yourself out there, you’ll never fully know what you are capable of.

The show is done taping and Nancy is back home with her family, but she isn’t allowed to divulge any information past what has already aired or who wins the grand prize. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. No matter the results, both Nancy and Mellisa are winners and reflect the hard work and ethics that are a part of our western heritage These two women exemplify strength, humility and class and are truly Amazing Canadian Heroes.

Why Shop Local?

Keep Us

Keep it Local! Strong...

Shoppers are becoming more and more aware of the many benefits of supporting local business. It is local shops that help create the flavor of a city. If there were only the big box stores, every city would be the same with no character. Studies have shown that for every $100 spent at a local business, $73 remains in the local economy compared to a non-locally owned business, where only $43 remains. Stats also show that local businesses contribute 250% more to charities than their larger counterparts. When profits stay local, it increase the communities wealth, tax revenue and standard of living. Your local business owners care about you, the customer, they are your neighbor and a part of the community you live in. And most importantly, shopping local is the best way to show pride in your city and help protect the businesses that make our community strong and unique.

LESSONS I’VE LEARNED FROM MY DOGS By Jean Van Kleek Since Shani was very young, she always liked to gently climb on me, place her paws around my neck and give a big, warm hug with her head pressed right against my face. Over the years, at times when I was sitting at the computer, her pawing would annoy me and break my train of thought. Recently during a vet visit, the vet said anything over 12 years with this breed is a gift. Shani is almost 13 now. I try to put that thought out of my head because I can’t imagine my life without her in it. She falls down a lot these days. Sometimes she just wanders around the house and stares. But still, she will come up to me and gently paw my leg to let me know she needs a hug. I look at things differently now, realizing how precious this time is and I stop for her hugs, knowing these moments are to be cherished. When she is gone, it will be the hugs I remember and the furry head nestled into my cheek that warms my heart and feeds my soul. Being too “busy” is a mistake many of us make with those we love. When my mom left this world far too young, I felt so much remorse for missed opportunities. I remember the times I rushed when

trying to leave her house because I was “busy” and she wanted to show me how all her flowers were coming up or when she insisted I stay to watch the Sound of Music (again), or Sunday dinners when I had other plans. I would give anything to have Sunday dinner with her again, and I would binge watch Sound of Music all day if that’s what she wanted. I’ve learned to accept hugs whenever they are needed, (and when they are not) and remind myself to share love always, because we never know if we will get another chance.

The Lethbridge & District Humane Society has been a no-kill haven since its inception in early 1970. It is their goal to take care of strays and abandoned pets until a home can be found for them to thrive and have a new start in life. Some animals stay for years before finding a family to love them.

With the support of Park Pet Hospital & Northside Veterinary Clinic, Quirk would like to introduce a few of the residents who have been waiting for quite some time. Rescued pets are exceptionally loving,

and very grateful for a chance to be with you. If you have room in your home and your heart, please give the Humane Society a call to give one of these furry friends a chance to belong, and be loved.

They are a gift!

Skye

(grey tabby female) Skye is a very petite and slightly timid little tabby. She came to the Humane Society during the spring of 2017 with her kittens although she was barely old enough to have them. Skye takes a bit to get to know people, but once she does she’s very loyal and enjoys attention. She especially loves to play with toys.

Minion

(male black & white) Minion is an adorable little purr machine! He's fluffy and handsome, playful and affectionate! He gets along really well with other cats and kittens, likes dogs, and gravitates towards people! Minion is energetic and loves to run and play, but he's very wellbehaved. Minion was born in August 2016, and spent several months in foster care with his mother and siblings. He now resides at the Humane Society, until he finds a Forever Home! Minion is easy-going and gets along with everyone, he's an absolute joy!

Toulouse

(orange tabby) Toulouse is an active, out-going, mischievous youngster who loves to play! He loves toys like the Cat's Meow, tunnels and laser lights. Toulouse likes to play with his roommates too, but is a typical boy and sometimes plays a little rough! He also likes people, when he's not racing around! He's about 9 months old and came to the Humane Society early this year. He's looking for his Forever Home, and for a family looking for a bundle of orange energy

Ramsey is a good looking orange and white kitten, about 6 months old. He loves to play wi his toys, and with his siblings. He's got a great purr, which he uses as soon as you pick hi up! He's energetic and fun, very entertaining to watch. He'sCats presently residing at th • Medical & Surgical Care for & Dogs Lethbridge Humane Society, but is looking for his very own Forever Home!

Misty

(female Siamese cross) Misty was born in the spring of 2015. She was found out on her own in late 2017 and arrangements were made for her to come to the Humane Society. Misty is fairly friendly with the other cats in the cat room and is also good with the volunteers. She is a very pretty girl who is looking for a home that will treat her like a princess.

Norris

(Short hair grey male) Norris was born in 2011. He is a shy quiet fellow who likes to keep to himself and not really be around the other cats. He does like a little affection from people and enjoys some petting. Norris is looking for a quiet home with 1 or 2 people. The adoption fee for Norris is $230 and incudes his neuter, all vaccinations including rabies and microchip.

Tristan

(orange with white male) Tristan is a very good looking pale orange (strawberry blonde!) young man with beautiful amber eyes. He's a little quiet and shy, and lacking in confidence. Tristan was found living as a stray with his mom and siblings, and hadn't had any experience with people before coming to the Humane Society last summer. He loves to play with toys, but can often be found off by himself having a nap! Tristan is looking for a Forever Home where he can have the time he needs to feel secure, and he's going to be a fabulous companion!
