Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

An Interview with Thomas Moore Author of C A R E O F T H E S O U L I N M E D I C I N E :

Healing Guidance for Patients, Families, and the People Who Care for Them Dynamic Speaker at Hay House's I Can Do It! Weekend Tampa Convention Center, November 14-20, 2010 Q: What is your central idea in CARE OF THE SOUL IN MEDICINE? A: In the language I use in my books, I would say that I was looking for the spirit and soul of medicine. A highly mechanistic and technological fantasy about life dominates the medical world. Young doctors not only learn the science of medicine, they are indoctrinated into the philosophy that puts science above all other concerns. As far as it goes, this approach that reached a peak in the 20th century is miraculously effective, but it is limited. Patients often complain that they are not treated as persons. The human side is in large measure neglected. Q: So is your book a critique of medical science? A: No, not at all. I wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for medical science. I appreciate it very much. But in my many books I am trying to restore the soul, the deep humanity and values that make life worth living, to every aspect of life. I’ve written about work, religion, sexuality, the environment, education, and the arts. It seemed natural to include medicine. One other motive comes from my own work as a healer. I have practiced psychotherapy for thirty-five years. I don’t separate body and soul, and so my work as a healer prepared me to examine medicine closely. Q: What would contemporary healthcare look like if the ideas in your book were put into practice?

A: It would take several books to answer that question completely. I’m concerned about many facets of healthcare. I would like to see patients treated as persons having infinite depth and individuality. I sometimes recommend attaching an additional chart to a patient’s bed to record dreams, thoughts, memories, stories and jokes. These are all very important for healing and health. I’m deeply interested in the spiritual aspects of illness and care. I’d like to see a major influx of spiritual awareness in our medical centers. Even the best and most enlightened among them often present healthcare as a secularistic work. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not suggesting pushing any particular religious point of view. One way would be to have beautiful places for meditation and prayer. Or we could improve the training of pastoral counselors and chaplains. In my hospital, they would be a major presence. The architecture of hospitals needs deep thought and a revolution. Doctors need help in talking to patients. Families have a central place in healing, and that role should be reflected in the way hospitals and physician’s offices are set up. And much more.

ic.” You can achieve much with small and simple means. I know from my practice in psychotherapy that a one sentence dream can reveal the pattern of a person’s life. In the movie about Dr. Patch Adams, putting a clown’s red nose on a doctor works wonders for patients. I’m not recommending clown’s attire, but it makes the point about simple means. A beautiful carpet, an extraordinary painting, a natural object—could transform a sterile medical space into a warmer, more soulful healing environment. A doctor at the Mayo Clinic listened closely to my talk on the soul of medicine and told me that whenever a new machine comes into his section of the hospital, he gets a painting or a carpet to offset the emphasis on technology. I call that the “BurneJones Effect,” after the painter who said that the more science progresses, the more angels he would paint.

Q: Do you really think medicine can change in the ways you recommend? A: Yes, I do. One interesting lesson I picked up in my reading about the soul as it was treated in ages past is a principle from what was called “natural mag-

CLEAR GOOD

There is a Law of Giving and Receiving! It operates with precision! I have discovered that as I give so I receive. As a child growing up in a family that gave freely, I was the recipient of love and material items. Then as I matured, I learned the joys of giving without expecting to receive in return. The giving became more joyful than the receiving! My learning continued when I read and studied New Thought and ancient wisdom literature. I read about the Divine Energy that created us to have an abundant life and that IT did not give some of Itself, IT gave all of Itself! An amazing insight was that to be complete IT must have a receiver. Each of us may choose to be a receiver of this prosperous life.

meditation, affirmations, affirmative prayer, spiritual counseling, inspirational reading, music and classes, to name a few. I choose to speak my affirmative prayers in faith and believe that a Law of Universal Good is now activated in my life. An affirmation you might like to say often is: My life is fulfilled, meaningful, comfortable and abundant with joyful companions. Rev. Cay Thompson, D.D. has been a Science of Mind (SOM) Practitioner for 47 years, a student of SOM for 51 years, a Religious Science Minister for 19 years, and a United Church of Religious Science (UCRS) Ecclesiastical Representative (Eastern/Mid-Western US) from 1999-2002. She was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity. Please see ad for Golden Triangle Center for Spiritual Living this page.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said that we are compelled to be beneficiaries, that we may stand in the light and the light is all. Then he tells us to get our bloated nothingness out of the way of the Divine Circuits. True prosperity includes the demonstration of comfortable living conditions, joyful companionship, and fulfilling and meaningful activities. What I now know is that if you and I choose to be receivers of this abundant life, we first get to discover the ways the human ego might be blocking our Greater Good. The human ego says there is not enough abundance to go around, I am not deserving of the Greater Good or similar ideas. Some ways to reverse this kind of thinking are through

today's principal

RELIGION

We've got a whole lot of religion going around and I'm not talking cathedrals, pulpits and bibles. This religion I'm talking about seems to readily give people the happiness and fulfillment they're so desperately seeking, at least until they can afford their next visit. It has such influence over people, it has become an addiction of pandemic proportion. The religion I'm talking about is the one called materialism. The principal tenet of materialism is that money is God and all the things that money can buy are likened to demigods. So now that we find ourselves in a period of correction, a time when financial institutions as well as all of us who participate on this grid are finally being forced to make more realistic and truthful adjustments, it's painful for many. We probably didn't acutely realize how materialistic we had become until financial crises began to show themselves all over the world in the last very few years. Riots over food supply and inflation may begin in other countries, but the core issues which birthed those uprisings eventually show up in our country as well. So when we learn through news reports that this unrest is occurring elsewhere, we need to accept the fact that it's our issue, too, if not now, then soon. Money is sadly, what fuels our base, third dimensional world. Decisions that impact the world's population and total environment are routinely made based on money and the making of it rather than on the welfare of earth and her inhabitants. Though a lot of stories are circulating around the Gulf oil catastrophe, you get the distinct feeling that almost every decision since the start of this event has factored money in as Priority #1. What in the world are we doing drilling down 5,000, 10,000, even 35,000 feet? That's from one to more than six and a half miles down. It feels completely invasive to our eco-culture, not to mention dangerous. "The Gulf of Mexico is proving to be a growing oil province, and a profitable one if you can find the reserves," said Tyler Priest, professor and director of Global Studies at the Bauer College of Business, University of Houston. Oil province? We're referring to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico as a money-making oil province? Part of the etymology of the word 'religion' means to 'hold sacred.' There's nothing sacred about the way big materialistic business continues to rape our planet, let alone the way our governments, and hence we, complicitly allow it. When we use the phrase, "this is business," to rationalize why we are not taking each other's lives into account in a holistic fashion, we only perpetuate today's principal religion. In most businesses, if you can't quite afford the product or service, you're out of luck. Even many healthcare practitioners who claim to be holistic demand high fees from their clients or they do not serve

10

them. They have forgotten the true meaning of holistic which takes all aspects of a human being into account, including ability to pay. If a major earth change event were to happen right here, right now, and our very safety and survival were in peril, we would in an instant be able to connect with all that is really important to us. It wouldn't be our automobiles or wardrobe, our shoe or jewelry collection, our travel or redecorating plans. If we had any disagreements or discord with anyone in our lives, we would instantly throw those out the window and run to the aid of those

people if we could. We would immediately drop everything and rush to assist anyone who was struggling to pull through. We would spontaneously focus on simplicity and we certainly wouldn't worry about any menu plans for the day. Prayer and conscious awareness of our connection to our Creator would be front and center. So what are we waiting for? Are we waiting for a catastrophe to pull us together, to help us get our priorities straight, to assist us into moving into the truly contemplative, psycho-mystical life we say we embrace? Do we need to be pushed into where we ultimately want to go or can we be proactive and re-order our lives right now? If we do, we'll be ready to serve most appropriately should such an event occur in the future. Having freed ourselves of the bondage of materialism, we can outstretch our arms of wisdom and compassion to help others heal themselves and the world.

The Cutting Edge in Health Most of us have learned about free radicals, how they contribute to disease, poor health and aging. We understand that they are created by the food we eat, our metabolism as well as toxins from our environment. Dr. Joe McCord, Ph. D. is one of the pioneers of free radical investigation. Since the late 60s, he and a group of scientists have studied free radicals and oxidative stress within the human body. Most recently, their findings indicate that common antioxidants like Vitamin C (also known as direct antioxidants) do not effectively eliminate oxidative stress in the body since the number of free radicals in the body is massive. One molecule of Vitamin C does have the ability to neutralize one free radical molecule, however the actual number of oxidants produced in the body each day is the number three followed by 20 zeros! Direct antioxidants often actually react with free radicals to create even more free radical molecules and more damage to the body's tissues from oxidative stress. "It's somewhat ironic," states Tracy Harward, VP of Marketing for LifeVantage, "that in our effort to battle free radicals by consuming conventional direct antioxidants all these years, many of us may have actually made the problem worse." What Dr. McCord and others have discovered is that the body possesses its own mechanism for relieving oxidative stress, the ability to trigger free radical fighting enzymes which are highly more effective than direct antioxidants. Says Dr. McCord, "The body's enzymes ... can each eliminate approximately one million free radicals per second without being used up. The advantage of enzymes over antioxidant vitamins is almost mind-blowing." McCord's studies have led him to develop a breakthrough supplement called Protandim® which features a proprietary blend of five potent botanicals that signal your body's DNA to step up production of enzymes such as SOD (superoxide dismutase) and others. Protandim® also does not contribute to the creation of free radicals as do antioxidant vitamins. Results of scientific tests for Protandim® show that the body is able to boost its production of some two dozen major antioxidant enzymes and most dramatically, these tests demonstrate that Protandim® slows the aging process of most adults to that of a 20-year-old. Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

Don’t ASSUME Your FOOD IS SAFE to Eat by Shanaya Nalina, N.D. I sometimes think what is being done to food is meant to kill us. Population control. Have you ever wondered why some European countries refuse to import American foods? Have you ever really considered what’s in our foods or what’s done to our foods before they reach our markets? Well, sit back and hold on to your hats. You might be in for a surprise. Let’s take GMO, for instance. GMO stands for genetically modified organism, which in layman’s terms means they can screw up all of Mother Nature’s good work and pass it on to you without even telling you on the label. GMO foods are not required to be labeled as such in the United States. Genetic engineering involves taking genes from one species and inserting them into another. For example, genes from an arctic flounder which has “antifreeze” properties may be spliced into a tomato to prevent frost damage. In theory, this might sound like a good idea, but it is not that simple. We are mixing genetic codes without knowing the long term effect. This is called Frankenscience. Who knows what these laboratory-created mutations will develop and what they possibly could do to our health. Severe allergic reactions have been reported which have even resulted in deaths from this untested practice. We are only experiencing the tip of the iceberg. Even some organic foods cannot completely protect us from GMOs such as potatoes, soy or corn. The seeds of these foods are now all GMO tainted. I avoid these foods even though mashed potatoes and popcorn were two of my favorites. To me they are now poison. For our protection, we must support mandatory labeling, long-term independent safety testing, more stringent regulation and full corporate liability for damages resulting from the irresponsible introduction of GMOs to our food supply and environment.

Bird Care Back

to

Basics Boot Camp by Colleen Gordon

Getting a new bird is exciting because they are so very interesting. Exotic birds, particularly all species of parrots, are endangered, and it is best to find your new pet through a domestic breeder to be sure not to deplete the wild population. Once you decide on a bird, you need to think about housing for her. If you are going to use a cage, get the largest you can afford. Birds need plenty of room to flap their wings without hitting the sides, and the bars need to be close enough together to prevent your bird from fitting her head through. You can also keep her in an aviary. Aviaries can be indoor or outdoor depending on climate. There should also be plenty of room for toys. Parrots are especially intelligent and curious, so they need a variety of toys. Toys can be as simple as a paperback book or paper towel roll that you find around your home. Avoid toys that are on open link chains or wires that could injure the bird’s beak. Toys placed in the cage will allow the bird to exercise and practice tricks. Once you arrive home with your bird, schedule a checkup with a vet that is an avian specialist. Since wild birds mask symptoms of illness to prevent being perceived as weak, illness in your pet bird can be difficult to detect. Look for loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes, nares in the beak, runny droppings, sitting fluffed, wheezing, sneezing and listlessness. At the first sign of illness you should take your bird to an avian vet.

your whole life, there is a tremendous amount of information available on your specific type of bird species. Keep yourself upto-date on the most current knowledge by researching websites, talking to breeders and other bird owners and attending bird shows. You might find that the knowledge you have will increase the health and happiness of you and your feathered friend. © 2010 Healing For Pets and the Special People Who Love Them. All rights reserved. Colleen will answer your questions on All Paws Pet Talk when you call 352-787-9523. Colleen M. Gordon is a pet communicator, pet Reiki/ massage therapist, and herbalist. Please see ad this page.

Safety is an issue with any pet, however you must be especially careful with your bird. Birds love to chew so be sure to keep electrical wires, knives, small glass or plastic items, staples and perfume samples from magazines away from her. Fumes are especially bad for your bird and can be fatal. Coated non-stick cookware gives off fumes that could harm or even kill your bird. The same is true for oven cleaner used with the self-cleaning feature on your oven. Household chemicals such as hairspray, bleach, cleaners, and cigarette smoke and sources of lead such as the tops of certain wine bottles can be fatal if ingested or inhaled. Other dangers include chocolate, avocado, caffeine, heavily salted food, and fruit pits. Feeding your bird a healthy diet will start with clean water. The general rule is that if you wouldn’t drink your bird’s water then it is time to change it. Depending on the type of bird you have you should determine what kind of seed and pellet mix will be best for your bird. Keep seed in an airtight container or zip-top bag to keep it fresh and insect-free. Some birds, like parrots, will also eat fresh fruit and vegetables so be sure to check with your vet for recommended for food items. Whether you decide to get your first bird or you have owned birds

Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

REAL RICHNESS

by Dawn Gates, Master Herbalist

Most

people know me as the plump, jovial herbal lady who can entertain audiences with her knowledge of the plant kingdom, but I was not always this person. When I was in my early twenties I led a totally different lifestyle. Most people don’t know it, but I was a leg model and most of my friends were models, artists or musicians. I lived a materialistic life where money and beauty were the only reality and life was about the here and now. When I lived in this world, I wouldn’t date a man unless he made a certain amount of money or unless he drove an expensive car. I was beautiful, I was shallow, I was surrounded by money, good looking people, lots of free drugs, and all I had to do was smile to get whatever I wanted. It was a nice life, but I was never fulfilled. I would look at my friends who were only interested in their next plastic surgery or who they would rub elbows with at the next party and wonder if this was all there was to life. I eventually got married to a musician who was about to get a recording contract but who got hooked on hard core drugs and the rock star lifestyle. We got divorced after I gained 20 pounds. I stopped modeling to go to college and I refused to go on week-long drug binges. Then the first Gulf War happened and I got patriotic. I joined the military partially to serve my country but also to escape a life that I knew was going nowhere. It was there that I learned a lot about myself. I was stationed in South Korea where I went to every temple and sacred spot I could find. I also had a lot of time alone to meditate and reflect on what I wanted to be when I grew up. My

interest in herbs was sparked again when I was there. I met a ginseng root doctor and when I got back to the states, I bought every herb book I could find to learn from. I was then fortunate enough to meet Matthew Wood in Minnesota (renowned herbalist, lecturer and author) who became my herbal teacher and friend.

It

took me a decade to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be and once I figured it out I embraced it. Today, I am a nurse, herbalist and teacher. I have a nice herbal practice, a small herb school, and a piece of land to grow things on. I feel wealthier today than I ever did living the life I was living in my twenties. You see the richness in life is not in the money you make or the people you know. It’s the journey that you take along the way. It took me a while to figure that out and that wisdom has made me happier and richer then I ever could have been living the fast paced life I had been living. I wouldn’t change a thing on the journey called my life. I learned from every experience I ever had and I continue to learn. Namasté.

Slow Money

e’re in the midst of a Real Food Revival which is spreading like wildflowers across our nation since Michelle Obama planted a garden at the White House. Many of us are familiar with the Slow Food movement which aims to promote good, clean and fair food through the creation of dramatic and lasting change in the food system, reconnecting Americans with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. It’s a return to a regional and artisan food system that values ‘small, quality and craft,’ one that is accessible by all. The good news is that there are several areas of the country that enjoy this kind of deliciousness with wonderful models the rest of the country can learn from in order to reconnect the food system in their own backyard. I’m in tune enough with the Central Florida region to assure you that there are lots of passionate people dedicated to the cause which gives me lots of hope when I begin to think what an enormous amount of work and intelligent design it is going to take in order for Central Florida to boast a plentiful and sustainable food system that is accessible to all and provides a living for many people in the new craft food industry that will blossom alongside it. One thing that has bothered me oh-so-slightly as I’ve gotten deeper entrenched in the local food movement is how the transition will happen and still be affordable when it’s not yet economically feasible to do so. Furthermore, the risks are often too high for traditional investors to take a serious look at slow foodrelated enterprises. Why invest in a business

that does not yet have a system to work within? A business that wants to source local food from small-scale growers using organic methods has no distribution system in place, inconsistent availability and insufficient volume in our market. (To name just a few issues). The only places that can pull this off are very ritzy ones with large bankrolls or non-profits which rely on volunteers and grants to subsidize efforts to discover, negotiate and attain the product in a very time-consuming and often extremely creative ways which often fall outside of ‘the rules’ for transport. The bold solution, as proposed by Woody Tasch of Slow Money (www.slowmoneyalliance.org), is to merge investing and philanthropy by building the nurture capital industry, a new financial sector supporting the emergence of a restorative economy with a goal of one million Americans investing 1% of their assets in local food systems within a decade. The Slow Money mission is to build local and national networks and develop new financial products and services dedicated to investing in small food enterprises and local food systems while connecting investors to their local economies. One of their first projects was to launch a national competition to discover food enterprises that have lots of local love and Central Florida made a splash with two businesses landing in the top ten. Homegrown Co-Op came in fifth and Dandelion Communitea Café finished ninth overall, ranking first in the restaurant category. A delegation from Orlando traveled to a national gathering to discover more about the movement and lay the groundwork for starting a Slow Money chapter to help make the connections to revitalize our food network

in a way that helps reduce risk for individual investors and brings prosperity and long-term sustainability to the wave of entrepreneurs who seek a financial system that serves people and place as much at it serves industry sectors and markets. Business Week called Slow Money “one of the big ideas of 2010” signaling that investors may be ready for a dramatic new way of relating with money. As Wall Street sputters, investors are turning to more tangible forms of investment and Slow Money offers ones on Main Street where folks can literally taste the change that comes from building the soil of our local food network. With this they may earn a return on investment that also directly improves their quality of life in ways that reach far beyond their bank balance. Julie Norris is co-proprietor of Dandelion Communitea Café, co-founder of the Progressive Local Alliance for Community Enrichment (PLACE) and serves on the board of Slow Food Orlando. SLOW MONEY PRINCIPLES In order to enhance food security, food safety and food access; improve nutrition and health; promote cultural, ecological and economic diversity; and accelerate the transition from an economy based on extraction and consumption to an economy based on preservation and restoration, we do hereby affirm the following Principles: I. We must bring money back down to earth.

II. There is such a thing as money that is too fast, companies

that are too big, finance that is too complex. Therefore, we must slow our money down -- not all of it, of course, but enough to matter.

III. The 20th Century was the era of Buy Low/Sell High and

Wealth Now/Philanthropy Later, what one venture capitalist called “the largest legal accumulation of wealth in history.” The 21st Century will be the era of nurture capital, built around principles of carrying capacity, care of the commons, sense of place and non-violence.

IV. We must learn to invest as if food, farms and fertility

mattered. We must connect investors to the places where they live, creating vital relationships and new sources of capital for small food enterprises.

V. Let us celebrate the new generation of entrepreneurs,

consumers and investors who are showing the way from “Making A Killing‰” to “Making a Living.”

VI. Paul Newman said, “I just happen to think that in life

we need to be a little like the farmer who puts back into the soil what he takes out.”

We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For by Emily Ruff • Contributing Green Editor

trips to accomplish many errands in one run. Yes, transportation energy is a major consumer of petroleum. But did you know, petroleum finds its way into our life through many other products? Plastic, polyester and nylon clothing, petroleum jelly, perfume, pharmaceutical drugs, hand lotions, dishwashing detergent, ink, bubble gum, ammonia, and many other common household items use petroleum in their production. In this light, one area in which I focus reducing my consumption of petroleum is plastic packaging. If I can find an alternative product with glass packaging, or better yet, buy in bulk with no packaging at all, I will choose it over items in plastic, even if it costs a bit more. Recycling cuts into energy use. According to the EPA, manufacturing new plastic from recycled plastic requires two-thirds of the energy used in virgin plastic manufacture. One ton of recycled plastic saves 685 gallons of oil. I also focus on reducing the petroleum that the production of my food consumes. I strive to support local farmers who produce food without petroleum inputs of fertilizers and chemical pesticides. I’m a proud member of the Homegrown Local Food Cooperative, www.homegrowncoop.org. By avoiding foods that use petroleum inputs and by choosing farms closer to my home, I reduce the amount of petroleum needed to get food from the farm to my table. And here again, I evaluate what I choose for medicine. Herbs that grow in my backyard or in the wild don’t rely on petroleum the same way synthetic pharmaceuticals do. They are a win-win for my body and for the planet.

Pay Attention and Educate Yourself

“I

f you are moved to such a degree that you feel the pain, and that you can feel the tears running down your face, then you’re looking at an opportunity to make a change, to make a difference in the world.” -- John Francis As many of you, I have wrestled with the deep emotions stirred by the ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Despite how depressing the fear of what might become of the Gulf and its wildlife can be, I am yet again witnessing an incredible opportunity for humanity to demonstrate its creativity, ingenuity and ability to create and manifest. Truly, we are called at this powerful time to show how creative we can be and what we can create when we work together. In light of this creative time, I share with you some of the key areas to which I choose to lend my focus in this time of great change for our people and our planet.

Reduce Your Consumption At the first sign of the oil spill, I assumed the national dialogue would shift to a discussion of how we can reduce our consumption of petroleum as a population. Sadly, this important element—what drove us to drill in the Gulf in the first place—has been largely ignored in the reflections on the disaster. So I encourage you to take up the conversation with your family, friends, and neighbors. Change starts with us. Transportation energy is one of our largest areas of consumption of petroleum. When the news first hit, many of us tuned up our bicycles, pulled out the map of the nearest bus routes, and even dusted off our sneakers to find ways to use less gasoline. Evaluating how we can reduce our transportation energy consumption is important as it is one of the largest areas of petroleum consumption for the average citizen. If bicycling the 30 mile commute to work in the middle of Florida’s summer doesn’t seem feasible for you, be creative. Try carpooling. Consider the trip itself. Do you really need to go into town just to pick up some milk? Could you find a suitable replacement at your home, or even walk to a neighbor? Plan your

As we’ve witnessed daily, the strong corporate power of BP has delayed important details about the oil spill and the magnitude of the environmental impact. The mainstream media has a tendency to pass along press releases from the petrol giant, not digging deeply enough to investigate the truth of the situation. We can no longer depend on a media with strong corporate ties to illuminate the full story. It is our own responsibility to educate ourselves responsibly. Some great sources for environmental news and information that tell the whole story include: www.foodandwaterwatch.org; www. organicconsumers.org; www.motherjones.org; www.truthout.org

Get Involved Contributing the solution in a hands-on way helps ease our fears, anxieties, and grief. Connect with local organizations like Eco-Action, who leads weekly clean-ups of local waterways (www.eco-action.net), or Keep Seminole Beautiful who organize regular clean-ups of natural lands in our area (www. keepseminolebeautiful.org).

Prepare for the Transition Forget “change is coming.” It is here now and we are the ones we have been waiting for. Learn how you can contribute to community resilience as we overcome our oil dependence. Get involved in initiatives like Transition Orlando (www.transitionorlando.org), part of the international Transition Movement (www.transitionnetwork.org). A Transition Initiative is a community-led response to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and increasingly, economic contraction. There are thousands of initiatives around the world starting their journey to answer this crucial question: For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly rebuild resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil and economic contraction) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?

Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

While connecting with others helps ease transitions, as community members can share and exchange their skills and talents, there is also much you can do with your family at your own home. Try a greywater system to recycle your shower water into your toilet, or plant an herb garden on your windowsill. Pick up a drying rack or a clothesline. Learn how to can. Cook dinner with your neighbors. Every little step adds up.

Focus on the Planet’s Power to Heal Cultivate positive energy for the planet. It has renewed itself through Ice Ages and climate changes over thousands and thousands of years, and though we are no doubt doing an immeasurable amount of damage to its current ecosystems that will potentially change everything we know about life on this planet, the Earth will still renew and rebalance itself over time. While there is no denying the negative aspects of this ecological disaster, I consistently seek to hold the Earth’s creative potential in my prayers and send as much positive healing energy to the Earth and her wildlife as I can. When you feel sick, it doesn’t help to be told how sick you are feeling. It helps to be reminded of your capacity to heal. The Earth loves the encouragement as well, so don’t hesitate to send her encouraging words! Actively involved in athletics and riding horses for most of her life, this changed in 2000 when she began to encounter hip pain due to an auto accident and congenital defect and was advised to have a double hip replacement told by an orthopedic surgeon. At 37, Anne knew she had to seek an alternative to surgery and on visiting a chiropractor for alignment was immediately told to start taking pilates. Though out of shape due to lack of exercise, she began training in pilates three times a week. This changed her life! Her hips grew stronger and the pain disappeared. She became strong all the way to her core and took control of her life. She developed such a passion for pilates that she started training under pilates master, Ariel Hernandez of Lake Mary. He helped Anne get certified in pilates on the reformer and mat. This was the beginning of a life change for Anne. She now knew her life purpose was to help others take back their lives as well. Today she passionately works with clients of all ages, helping them overcome their limitations due to weight gain, lack of confidence and injury. She is currently working on her certification in yoga and has completed her certification in meditation and relaxation. Her focus is a healthy mind, body and soul. Celebrate with Anne the opening of her new center, Tranquiliti Wellness Center in Windermere. Her goal is to reach as many people as possible about the benefits that pilates and yoga can provide. Finding Our Treasure Chest

L

by Albert Nuñez, DVM • Contributing Spiritual Life Editor

ay not up for yourself treasures upon earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. --Master Jesua; Matthew 6:19 Many a fiery sermon has been surmounted by many an interpretation of the above passage in the bible. From a metaphysical standpoint, this one passage describes true abundance in a very clear way.

The first part deals with the facts about life on this rock. Entropy happens! Material things, titles, health, mental positions, status, beauty, concepts, all of these ‘things’ are subject to decay, rusting, rot, corruption, fire, flood, disease, disorder, disorganization, amnesia and forgetfulness. The impermanence of things is just the way everything goes around here. So many people put so much of their attention, their true treasure, on the acquisition and maintenance of things and symbols of status and power that they squander their attention, their true treasure, on the maintenance of impermanence. Some people suffer so because they have bled out most or all

of their attention on the outside world. This loss of attention depletes one of energy and life force. If one’s attention is mostly ‘out there’ running mental movies, judging events and others, resisting what is, and fearing what could be, the resulting loss of attention of our true treasure, peace, leads to anxiety, feelings of hopelessness and of not being enough, of not belonging, of true suffering, a real hell on earth. What’s even more amazing is that I have witnessed this suffering surrounded by extreme wealth and/or poverty. This hell has no class distinction. Money has nothing to do with true abundance and true treasure, yet many chase their treasures ‘out there’ only to lose their peace while trying to maintain and protect their treasures from entropy and impermanence. Our true treasure and wealth is the gift of Awareness, your pure Being in the mode of peaceful, silent observer. ‘Heaven’ and the words the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ don’t describe a physical place but a state of silent, peaceful, quiet, observing, grateful, blissful awareness. When we lay our treasure of awareness inward and contact the feeling of our highest self in a state of gratitude, we develop an unbreakable peace that is the true Mystical Pearl and the greatest treasure a human can acquire. Living in a state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual peace is the most sought after treasure of humanity. It has eluded so many throughout history not because of lack of ambition and zeal for the cause but because everyone marches off in the wrong direction, outward, in the quest of their treasure chest. Our true treasure is our sense of connection and heightened awareness for all that is, in a peaceful, grateful state regardless of outer circumstances. This internal treasure can be cultivated and strengthened by turning our attention inward. Many cultures sought to develop our inner faculties and discovered many powerful tools to develop our inner awareness. There are many variations of the tools used to strengthen your inner

astral, electrical, awareness body. I’ll mention a few here that are quite useful.

1.

Use of mantra for silencing the mind. Try repeating the word “mama” to yourself as fast as you can internally the next time your mind won’t shut up. The rapid repetition of this word in the mind shuts down all other thoughts and lets you experience your inner silent observer, your true internal self. There are many mantras you can use. Find one that suits you.

2.

Full yogic deep breathing. This is long deep breathing with the breath suspended at the top and bottom of the inhale and exhale. The goal is one to two breaths per minute. This type of breathing fills you with universal energy, also known as prana, and silences the mind. You’ll especially notice the mind quiet when the breath is held in or out. Visualizing healing light filling your physical envelope only strengthens your inner spiritual light body.

3.

Light body exercises. You can strengthen your inner neuroelectric body by practicing exercises that strengthen your awareness and the intensity of your light body. Certain yoga and Qi Gong exercises do this. The basic idea is to

yourself aware and free of physicality while still alive in physical form. None of my words can describe the experience, so get to work. I’m just here to let you know it’s not only possible, it’s reproducible. I use these techniques any time I need a little awareness, which is always! Raise your frequency and vibration through laughter and gratitude. Strengthen your light body like a body builder builds his muscles, vibrant and strong. With a strong light body, you appear compassionate, peaceful, calm, brilliant, loving, soft/strong, and nonjudging to others because these are the qualities of the very stuff we are made of —particles of virtue itself according to the Taoists. We strengthen our inner light bodies by breathing in light and prana as building blocks of light. We become more virtuous not because we have to but because it is what we are made of. Eastern philosophies tell us the center of our being is located in the heart center in our chests. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” The advice Master Jesua offers is to strengthen our inner treasure of awareness and

and expressing more of our treasure of awareness in our heart centers, firm, consolidated, loving, non-judgmental, tolerant, strong and peaceful, we will have no choice but to overflow and bathe the world around us in peace, love and light. This is True Lasting Abundance. Enjoy your treasures, wherever your heart is! Dr. Al Nuñez is a lifelong mystic and student of spirituality. He has studied and applied many of the profound practices and tenets of Catholicism, shamanism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Zen, Kabbalah, paganism, mysticism, Hinduism, tantra, energy and sound healing, “Shadow Work,” kundalini yoga, many forms of meditation, and Qi Gong. Dr. Al is committed to awakening human beings to their highest selves. Albert J. Nuñez, DVM, CVA has owned Animal Hospital of Baldwin Park and of Lake Mary since 1995 where he has practiced integrative veterinary medicine combining cutting edge surgery, internal medicine, endoscopy and laser ultrasound with acupuncture, herbal and energy medicine and nutrition for dogs, cats and exotics. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” intensify your awareness of your physical body and its relationship and orientation in time and space to the outside world. A deep breath while tensing and releasing body parts strengthens your awareness of them. As your awareness of your light body grows, you’ll be able to keep most of your attention on your inner landscape as you navigate the outer world. This internal awareness silences the mind and raises your energy and frequency as you engage the outer world. As you practice and your light body (felt as proprioception) strengthens, you may begin to practice separating it from your physical form. A good resource I found was a book called Astral Dynamics by Robert Bruce. Exercises like these raise your awareness of your light body and let you experience

to consolidate our awareness in our heart center, in a state of joyful, peaceful gratitude, our own inner heaven. This treasure of peaceful silent awareness is not vulnerable to moss, rust, rot, thieves, death or decay and is, in essence, our highest self, our teacher, our inner Christ. Let it be your friend. WATER As

Just Do It! by Vivienne Bailey

a reflexologist, I always ask my clients how much water they drink every day. “Not enough,” is the typical answer. We all instinctively know we don’t drink enough water! When I stimulate the 15,000 nerve endings in the feet, the lymphatic system begins to release the toxins into the body’s fluids. These toxins must be flushed out of the body or they will settle back into the tissues causing unpleasant symptoms. As one of the body’s ‘sewage systems,’ the lymphatic system collects and dumps toxins at its elimination sites and cannot do this vital job properly without adequate and abundant water.

One 8-ounce soda is 50,000 times more acidic than neutral (7.0 pH) water! Some people routinely drink a Big Gulp every day! Wow!

I advise my clients to drink water both before and after our sessions. They feel wonderful due to the release of endorphins, and the changes continue for quite a while unless my homework of drinking water is ignored. Occasionally, I get the rare call seeking relief from uncomfortable reactions such as a headache or insomnia or return of aches and pains. When I ask if he or she drank water, I usually get a sheepish answer, “Well, no...” Reflexology is not just a good “foot rub.” It is intense body work just like a trip to the gym. After the body is put through its paces, its fluids must be replenished. Replacing the spent body fluids is not just a good idea, but absolutely vital. So when I reflex my clients’ nerve endings in their feet, they don’t suffer negative reactions after a session when those nerves are properly hydrated.

See Vivienne’s website for more information on water: www.YourWaterWisdom.com. Vivienne is certified in the Original Ingham Method® of Reflexology. She shares foot and hand reflexology in combination with Reiki, aromatherapy and Tibetan sound bowls to create a truly unique approach to “foot work." Human life begins in amniotic fluid. As we grow, mature and age, we become progressively more dehydrated. While I encourage my clients to stay hydrated for our sessions. It is equally important to stay hydrated for daily living. Everything works better (joints, backs, necks, organs, muscles, etc.) when bathed in pure, high alkaline, life-restoring water. Water is so basic and fundamental, it’s easily overlooked, minimized and neglected until a health challenge arises. This amazing liquid, water, deserves a closer look.

“Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily for optimum health.” "Drink half our body weight in ounces of water every day.” We’ve all heard these two adages many times. Given these basic health guidelines, if you weigh 130 pounds, then you would need at least 65 ounces of water per day (half a gallon). Most people make the mistake of believing that if they drink fluids such as coffee, iced tea, sports drinks, milk, juices, sodas, and alcoholic beverages, that they have met their daily water intake. Fluid intake does not equal water intake. To maintain the correct acid to alkaline ratio within, our bodies perform a delicate balancing act. Do you realize that in order for the body to neutralize the acidity of one ordinary glass of soda, you would have to drink TWO GALLONS of pure, high alkaline water?!

PINK SLIP JOURNEY I

by Cynthia MacMillan • Contributing Success Editor

knew people were losing their jobs left and right and I also knew that had nothing to do with me, or so I thought. Becoming a statistic was the last thing on my mind when I went to work that Friday. Change, totally uninvited, came roaring into my life.

A little over a year ago, I was working for a Fortune 200 company and on my tenth anniversary I received a phone call informing me my position had been eliminated. I was devastated and my shadows came pouring out like venom. Here is an excerpt from my journal: “The next few minutes are a blur but basically boils down to my position has been eliminated. My mind is numb and actually I am in shock; I didn’t see this one coming. I am shaking to the very foundation and my sense of worth and value as a human being plummets. I am afraid and I am ashamed.” Being laid off not only affects you financially but socially. For some people, including myself, our sense of identity disappears. We go from stability and having a 401K, pension, medical benefits and a great title plus all the other perks to saying, “I’m unemployed.” Ouch. It’s no wonder that an emotional storm is brewing in our psyches. Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross pioneered the study of the five stages of a grief cycle which are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Although her work focused on people dealing with terminal illness or catastrophic loss, it also holds true for losing a job.

LET’S LOOK AT EACH OF THE FIVE STAGES:

5. ACCEPTANCE - I’m ready now. Acceptance is stepping out of denial and being willing to look at the events exactly as they are with no drama. Acceptance enables us to begin the healing process. Contact Cynthia MacMillan, Certified Integrative Coach at 386-789-0520, Cynthia@InnerRevolution.net or by visiting http://www.InnerRevolution. net. Cynthia will be your accountability partner, confidential advocate and respectful challenger as you uncover the internal blueprint that currently drives your beliefs and choices. Melt away the old stories that keep you in the repetitive spiral of mediocrity. Instead, embrace your authentic self, express healthy self-esteem and awaken joy. Your questions, comments and thoughts are always welcome. Please refer to ad this page.

1. Journal about your layoff and allow yourself to express

your darkest feelings. Don’t censor yourself at this point. Get it all out on paper.

2.

We need to take ownership of our emotions to regain control of our lives. We can’t heal what we can’t feel.

3. Make a list of the facts about your layoff without any story, drama, or judgement.

4. What actions are you going to take? What are the daily things you are going to do? Remember to take care of yourself emotionally and physically.

1. DENIAL - This can’t be happening to me! Yes, it is happening and it doesn’t matter how many times you pinch yourself and try to wake up. When we are in denial, we want to focus on our story and only what we want to see. This is a defense mechanism against the truth. 2. ANGER - I’m not angry; I understand. That’s just b.s. I am enraged. I found at this stage that if I poured all my feelings into a journal, I had more compassion for myself. As Debbie Ford states in Spiritual Divorce, “Most people just try to figure out ways to hide, get rid of, or medicate their unwelcome emotions rather than exploring and discovering the root of their existence.” 3. BARGAINING - Maybe if I just—just what? Worked harder? I did work hard. Plead to God? To the Universe? What would I plead? Please put me ahead of everyone else? Maybe it is time to allow humility in my life. 4. DEPRESSION - I will never work again. I applied for countless jobs and only recently had one response. I found myself slipping into a self-induced pity party. It was time for some exercise, B vitamins, and volunteer work. I have a choice.

That Was the Fat Girl Dancing! by Jenenne Valentino-Bottaro “That was the fat girl dancing!” Words said by a beautiful child. This beautiful child was dancing with us during one of our public classes. The words from this child is not what hit my soul, but the laughter from the parents that quickly turned into embarrassment as another beautiful child around seven stated, “That was rude.” I have had a journey with my weight since I can remember. Shortly after my college graduation, I began training for Ms. Fitness when I got into a car accident that kept me immobile for six months. I was restricted from any jarring movements. That accident was a defining moment in many ways as I was left lost and confused and in a dark place. Since I started Tribal Belly Dance I have developed a connection with my body. I began to respect my body and myself. My insecurities melted away as did the urge to hide my weight. This connection and this newfound freedom is the abundance that I receive in Fortunata Tribal Gypsies. My foundation through this abundance is rooted in honoring and respecting my body. The abundance filled me with honor, connection and acceptance. So what made those words take me to that dark place again? I connected to the context. There continues to be a stigma around overweight women, the collective thought being that all women who are overweight are unhealthy. Our relationship between body dissatisfaction, self-efficacy and behavior change are predictors for becoming overweight, developing an eating disorder, and/or developing depression. Body image, body awareness, self-esteem and self-efficacy have become important components to overall health, which is often over-shadowed by the stigma that every woman has to be thin. When we talk about non-material abundance, we usually think about the Law of Attraction and the teachings of Abraham. This article is about the collective thought of connection and freedom from stigma, rather than all women over-weight are obese and unhealthy and that healthy means thin. Jenenne R. Valentino-Bottaro holds a M.A. degree from Webster University and is a Ph.D. Canidate in Human Services with a specialization in Social and Community Services from Cappella University. A Women’s Self Defense Instructor, Hypnotist, Mind-Excellence Specialist and Body Ways Specialist Jenenne is a student of Amy Anthony at Om Studios, Orlando, Florida in her level I and Level II Tribal Belly Dance Instruction. PREPARING FOR CHANGE UTILIZING TIME AND OPPORTUNITY by Rev. Andrew Cekun How do we prepare ourselves for the Planetary Initiation of 2012, quite probably the most significant event in human history in thousands of years? As described in my previous article, 2012 is destined to change everything about the present order of things on the Earth. As defined previously, an Initiation is an esoteric term used in the Ageless Wisdom teachings to describe a major expansion of consciousness (it has nothing to do in this context with ritual or ceremony). When the planet undergoes Initiation, this affords humanity an extraordinary opportunity to experience the same type of Initiatory experience on the personal level due to the intensified and accelerated energies on the Earth during the period leading up to December 2012. Unfortunately, modern New Age teachings are ill equipped to help the spiritual seeker of today to make these dramatic expansions of consciousness. This is because the Ageless Wisdom teachings of the ancient mystery schools were simplified ("diluted") to make their spiritual practices more understandable and accessible by aspirants to the path. The Ageless Wisdom teachings with the required methods and techniques for consciousness expansion (Initiation) have been available to the public for years. Disseminated by master teachers in books often weighty and intimidating, modern spiritual seekers have abandoned them in favor of more accessible New Age teachings which are easier to understand and apply in daily living. Today, preparing for 2012, spiritual seekers cannot expect to advance on their own Initiatory Path without the more advanced and substantive teaching that I can provide as part of my path of service in preparing the minds, hearts, and souls of humanity for the Planetary Initiation of 2012.

“WE ARE LIVING IN A

An important question to ask yourself is: To continue to embrace the New Age ideal of a spirituality that provides, peace, contentment, self-fulfillment, and a sense of safety and security; or a spirituality that will challenge you?

TIME OF UNREPEATABALE

The Path of Initiation is one of hard work, constant effort, strenuous mental and spiritual living, conforming to self-imposed discipline, and sacrifice. I know, because I was able to recently achieve a major Initiation (expansion of consciousness) by applying, then living, the Ageless Wisdom teachings.

OPPORTUNITY, BECAUSE TIME IS SO SHORT BETWEEN NOW AND DECEMBER 2012. HOW WE USE TIME NOW IS AN URGENT QUESTION AND A SUPREME CHALLENGE.”

We are living in a time of unrepeatable opportunity, because time is so short between now and December 2012. How we use time now is an urgent question and a supreme challenge. Other important questions are the nature of one's service, contribution, legacy, and the reordering of life's priorities in the period approaching 2012, considering our limited time. Reading books or internet articles about 2012 is useless without changing consciousness, transforming energy, or taking action. This requires knowledge and training. Will you accept this challenge and opportunity that the Tibetan Master Djwhal Kuhl once described as "grasping the golden thread of consciousness," and prepare yourself for the Planetary Initiation of 2012? The Rev. Andrew Cekun is an esoteric astrologer and teacher. A student of the Ageless Wisdom teachings for 30 years, he educates about the Path of Initiation. Andrew has a B.A. degree in Philosophy and Religion from Rollins College. He is an ordained ADL Minister (a metaphysical interfaith church). The New Moon is an auspicious time of the month that supports and facilitates the transformational process. The last week of the moon cycle just before the New Moon, is a time of cleaning out and releasing what no longer works in our lives. Then we step into a New Moon, a time of new beginnings initiating a new moon cycle and opening the doorway for changes to be made. The New Moon solar eclipse on July 11 in the sign of Cancer has the potential to supercharge our new beginnings and set into motion changes that can continue to manifest over the next six months. Prepare to consciously align yourself with this powerful window of opportunity utilizing the following Seven Day New Moon Ceremony: Begin this ceremony a day or two after the new moon occurs, on the night you see the first sliver of the moon. Write down what you would like to manifest, what changes you wish to bring into your life. Choose a candle that feels right for your vision. Then every night for seven nights, burn sage or incense, light your candle and read or imagine your vision. You may add to it over the course of the seven days. On the eighth day, burn your written vision and bury the ashes in the earth along with the remainder of the candle and any ashes from the sage or incense. Release your vision to the Universe asking to manifest in line with the highest good for all. Then allow life to unfold. This Ceremony can be utilized every month at the New Moon: July 11, August 9, September 8 and so on. The New Moon is a time to put forth prayers for healing and wholeness for yourself and all our relations as we move forward with hope in our hearts. Spend some time outside in nature, attuning to the sounds, scents, trees, creatures and the Earth beneath your feet. Breathe Earth energy up into your heart. Feel your connection to the Earth Mother. On the Full Moon (July 25, August 24, September 23), gaze up at Grandmother Moon and breathe her light down into your heart. As you connect to Earth and sky, feel the power within you to transform your life as you move towards a more complete alignment with your soul's true purpose. May the following insights and affirmations assist you on your journey! ARIES (March 20-April 19) Strengthen your connections to like-minded, supportive people. Let go of any preconceived expectations or limitations. The past is over. Reconnect or deepen your connection in a spirit of love, mutual support and cooperation. Associations nurtured now will assist you in creating a firm foundation for the times ahead. Be a helpful friend, assisting when needed and also asking when you are in need. Nurture a sense of love and interconnection with all you meet and with all creation. AFFIRMATION: As I love and support others, I love and support myself. We are all One. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Have you made any needed changes since your birthday? If not, the urge to do so will become stronger. Change is not your strong point, but when the stress level rises, listen! What steps can you take to initiate movement towards achieving what you really want? What limiting beliefs about yourself are standing in the way? Observe, contemplate and then go for it! You have the power within you to transform your life. Working diligently on aligning your life during the summer will create a sense of flow and harmony in the fall. AFFIRMATION: I allow my body, mind and spirit to shift, change and transform in line with my highest good. I AM supported and guided in ALL that I do and in all that I AM.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Take time each day to nurture your intuition through observing, meditation, spending time in nature, whatever practices may work for you. As you create the foundation for the year ahead, tune into your inner guidance. The more you listen to your inner voice, the more confident you will become that it is indeed right on! All the knowledge and guidance you need can be found deep within, you just need to tune in and listen! AFFIRMATION: My intuition guides me to take right action in all things. With each breath, my inner knowingness grows stronger and more aligned with my true purpose. I AM blessed. CANCER (June 21-July 22) As you begin a new year with your birthday, see it as an opportunity to begin anew in some areas of your life. Remember, only you can create what you need in your life. If you are feeling frustration and stress, perhaps it is time to make some changes. Work on establishing healthier patterns for interacting with others and for nurturing yourself. Envision what you want and need. Then, one day at a time, take the steps necessary to make it happen! Access that power within you! AFFIRMATION: I AM totally supported as I create healthy new patterns in my life. I give myself total permission to nurture and take care of myself. I AM blessed. LEO (July 23-Aug.22) As you end one year and begin another with your birthday, what insights are coming to you? What illusions about yourself and life are you being encouraged to break through? What needs to be released or changed to allow you to move forward? Observe, examine and and make any needed changes in your life and self-perception. You are the creator of your life, no one else! What do you desire to see unfold over the coming year? Empower yourself by imagining only the very best unfolding before you. You have the power. Use it! AFFIRMATION: I release the past and move forward with a grateful heart. I allow my life to unfold one day at a time bringing peace, joy and positive change! VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) Acknowledge your blessings and your strengths. Celebrate yourself for your steady character, your giving nature and for all that you do in service to others. Your hard work and sacrifice may sometimes seem to go unnoticed, but you are very much appreciated. See gratitude in the eyes of others and allow it to nurture your soul. AFFIRMATION: I AM in service to the Earth and all my relations. As I give of myself, I AM blessed. LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.22) Observe any challenges and what is being triggered for you. If you feel vulnerable, sensitive or emotional, try not to take things too personally. Take care of yourself and do some inner work to uncover the deeper issues that you are being called upon to heal at this time. Be sure to give yourself some time and space to be alone to contemplate and nurture yourself. AFFIRMATION: I AM loved, protected and guided in all that I do. I AM supported by my friends, family, the angelic realms and the Universe. I AM grateful. SCORPIO (Oct.23-Nov.21) What have you been focusing on or thinking about lately? Is it what you truly want? Quickly shift any thoughts that are not nurturing the most positive you can imagine for yourself. During the time of Cancer, tap into your dreams, imagination and creativity. Be that creative God/Goddess, seeing no limitations to what you can manifest for yourself and our world. During the time of Leo, hold fast to your visions. Refine and enhance them, but do not doubt or discontinue them. Remain steadfast in your focus regardless of challenges that may arise. AFFIRMATION: I see only the very best and most positive unfolding in my life and in

our world. I AM grateful. I AM supported. I AM blessed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21) Examine what has occurred for you over the past two months or so. Any challenges are serving to help you gain clarity as to what is important to you and what supports you on your life path. What insights have been revealed about your life and perceptions of self? Now is a good time to implement some of the ideas and insights you have gathered in order to nurture your sense of inner peace and contentment. Take a few deep breaths and consider what needs to be changed to enhance your life either internally in your perceptions and expectations or externally in your environment. AFFIRMATION: From my experiences I gather insights, knowledge and the knowingness that I have the power to change my life! CAPRIC O R N (Dec.22Jan.19) Observe what is occurring around you. Observe your reactions and responses. Hold back a bit and be a fly on the wall. Summer can be an intense time of year for you. Observing will strengthen your intuition and assist you in detaching from situations that you might normally react to. Observe, letting go of expectations or judgements. Remembering to take deep breaths will help you to negotiate this timing a little easier. You will gain some very helpful insights about yourself and others as a result of your efforts. One day at a time, follow your heart...you don't need to go beyond today. Consider the summer as a time of renewal and rejuvenation for you. Embrace challenges as lessons facilitating your soul's growth. Follow your inner guidance one day at a time and it will bring you a sense of peace and attunement with the flow of life. AFFIRMATION: I allow my mind and thoughts to rest. As I attune to my inner wisdom, I KNOW I am being guided in line with my highest good. PISCES (Feb.19-March 19) Some positive insights and opportunities may come your way during the time of Cancer. Be careful not to waste your energy on worrying, wondering or questioning the whys and wherefores. Enjoy the moment. Plan some fun activities this summer. If you do find your mind getting caught up in details or drama, breathe and bring your focus to the present. Remember that all is in Divine Order. Trust that you are being guided and all will unfold at exactly the right time. Now go have some fun and place it all in the hands of the Universe. AFFIRMATION: I trust in Divine timing. As I breathe and go with the flow of each day, life unfolds before me even better that I could have imagined! I AM grateful. Inspiration

can come from many different places. Mine came to me years ago when my husband injured his lower back. A year and a half of x-rays, MRIs, epidural steroid injections and many doctor visits left him facing surgery that he really did not want. Through referrals we found an acupuncturist that helped alleviate his pain, restore his confidence and return him to the strong healthy life he knew before his injury. That was the catalyst that drove me towards a career in Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

Is An Inspired Thing are using acupuncture to treat stress, fibromyalgia, addiction, depression and fertility issues. Being in a good state of health helps you thrive in the face of physical, emotional and mental stresses and acupuncture can help you achieve this. Acupuncture is safe, natural, drug-free and effective. It is the perfect way to get well and stay healthy. Thomas Edison once said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Inspiration can come from many different places. Hopefully we can all find the inspiration to feel healthy beyond the absence of acute or chronic illness. Gentle Acupuncture can help guide you towards that path. Let us inspire you. The person who does not have good health quickly realizes how important proper care and prevention can be to live one’s life to its fullest. Paying attention to the signs your body is giving you and regular wellness care can be the difference between living and just getting by. With regular maintenance, our own healthcare could end up costing us less. We often think nothing of making regular payments to the landscaper, nail salon and hair stylist to maintain our or our property’s appearance but sometimes question ourselves as to whether or not we should see someone about that numbness in our left foot or the loss of flexibility in our right arm, both indicators of the possibility of something more serious. Americans are slowly waking up to the fact that there are healthier and more cost effective ways to treat and prevent disease in the body. Health insurance costs in the United States are rising faster than wages or inflation and according to the WHO (World Health Organization), more money is spent on healthcare in the United States than in any other nation in the world. Our society, which does not have the mindset of a preventionforward medical healthcare system, would definitely benefit from traditional Chinese medicine where there is such an emphasis on preventative measures. Chinese medicine treats the body as a whole and does not just concentrate on the symptoms at hand. Rather, it uses these symptoms to help diagnose the root of the illness. Acupuncture is not just for pain management, either. More and more people

would say that it is an amazing challenge to write an article about money and finances considering all that has occurred this past year, and I am happy to say that last year is in the past and we are moving higher. There are only a handful of people that I know that were not affected by the ups and downs of the economy last year, and most were aware of the energetic fluctuations in consciousness, if not in the material sense. I say with all gratitude that I am still catching up from it—credit card debt, inability to keep up with payments and the stress connected to that. How do you keep that faith? Well, you choose. It is the test of the millennium! The test is to maintain your faith in the face of the energies that are presenting themselves as we move closer to 2012. What is 2012 anyway? It is many things to many different people. For me, it is a raising of consciousness that will catapult us into “knowing"—knowing who we are, knowing that all is in Divine Order, knowing that we are never and have never been alone, knowing we are loved, knowing the answers to everything we have had questions about within the spiritual realm. It is the time of revealing, whether it be in our personal universe, our country or the entire planet. A revealing of what? A revealing of whatever it is that we have been questioning ourselves about and it will come about only if we are open and available Continued on page 29 Velocity Magazine | MONEY, MATERIAL AND NON-MATERIAL ABUNDANCE | July • August 2010

to see and hear. That is the key. o how does one stay open and available? Through service to others. When we are focused on being for others, the universe has an open space to give to us. When we are focused on helping another, we are not locked up in the 'me' and 'mine' of things. It is so easy and yet we make it so challenging with our fears about our needs not being met. I must say that over and over again, when I get out of myself, especially when things are not going my way according to my ego, if I just go help someone else, the answer, money or person to assist appears. I get out of the way and the universe can work for me. So what if there is an economic crisis? When I give to others, the universe gives back to me in whatever way is needed for me to move forward so I can be of more service. Get it? I feel to end with a small request for prayer. Gaining a Fortune Putting Down the Drink REPRINTED FROM QUIET DESPERATION

by Felicia Ford

... Some of my struggles with money happened sadly due to my addictions. Friends have told me it seemed as if they had more money when they drank. With that said, could we at least rise above what could have been, to the hope of living modestly without senseless wants? In the times I made conversation with my Higher Power concerning my desire for more, I soon realized that God does not want me to pray for myself. Rather, my prayers should be for strength in handling financial problems. I would not have a prayer answered when it pertained to me. Insecurity is a state of mind. My needs have always been met. I’m not sure how this works. It just does when we give them to God. I have been at my lowest point and if my heart and motives are in the right place I found a way back. Understanding money may underline all but God possesses the soul. So, my dear friends, let our hopes replace our fears. Even though I still have trouble with economic insecurity, I gained a fortune the day I put down the drink. next promise is the one in which other people in our lives gain awareness though our experiences. Our growth is measured by the examples we offer or by the act of giving ourselves unconditionally. The climb upward happens because of the principles. Our journey in a sense has ended, yet is also just starting, for we must undertake what we were given to do in sobriety. Yes, I believe we are judged by how we live our lives. Can another person judge us though? Have they walked in our shoes? Would they want to, anyway? This matters little. We are not to worry for it isn’t a performance for

review. It’s an example that we will show in recovery. How does our experience benefit others? For starters, if we work the principles of A.A. we should have our feet grounded in truth. We walk in step with our Higher Power. Our experiences have been making us whole. Then we become aware of how we influence others in and out of the program. We finally participate in a world we once ignored. CHOOSING THE RABBIT HOLE Mind or Heart? by Ken Germann

I

nsanity is often defined as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Following this definition, many of us get stuck in what I call “karmic jail.” We have not reached the point in our lives where we are ready to take the red pill as Neo did in The Matrix. We continually follow this cyclical path. We make progress operating within the limitations of our comfort zones. We come to the edge of that rabbit hole Morpheus talks about in The Matrix. The cyclical rubber band path of our lives stretches just far enough to where we can peer down the rabbit hole. We know in our hearts we have the ability to ascend to a higher state of being, a higher state of living, a higher state of loving, but we let our ego minds talk us out of that possibility. We are comfortable where we are. Why should we change? Whatever fears or image of ourselves we have lets that rubber band snap back to its original form. We are back to our normal lives having lost our “Get out Karmic Jail Free” pass.

32

www.ReadVelocity.com •

Our minds will find hundreds of ways of talking ourselves out of our own personal ascension or elevation to the place where we are able to shift from mind center to heart center. The mind is about solutions. The heart is about answers. Choosing the red pill is about shifting our lives from mind centeredness to heart centeredness, exchanging logic for faith, love and passion. We need to have faith that the rabbit hole is a safer place for us to be, safer than being stung by the snap of the rubber band. The farther we move from the illusions of the life that rubber band corralled for us, the faster we gain a new perspective of the heart centered Universe. With each step we take moving past the boundaries of our old lives, our inner light shines brighter. The messages on how to improve our lives will start flowing in. Watch for them. Listen to them. They come in threes. The three major events of my life that helped me find the courage to allow my inner light to shine and allow my own plunge into the rabbit hole were my divorce, my moving away from family and friends, and finally, having the opportunity to experience the greatest love of my life. The magic was in the 90 m i n u t e cataclysmic shift in my perception on love and relationships while sitting in the back seat of a rental car, the most unlikely place for a magical

Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

and memorable event. For 90 minutes we talked, joked and learned about each other. Even in the brief moments of silence we understood each other. There was an unspeakable purity that existed between us that day. I had the chance to experience a perfect love, a perfect friendship, and a perfect trust in an imperfect world. That summer day in June, I received one of the greatest gifts ever given to me. I had given permission to myself to follow whatever course I was led to follow. The secret Morpheus never told Neo or his consorts is that once you give yourself permission to take the path down that rabbit hole, the rabbit hole never ends. Whatever mistakes were made and events that occurred after that moment were the catalysts I needed to escape my own karmic jail. My life came full circle as everything I needed began manifesting. There’s no way I could have planned it any better than it happened. I was driven out of my mind and into my heart. I’m grateful for that gift that was given to me that day. In the greatest love of my life, I discovered my greatest passion— the path of the sage. For me the rabbit hole was the dark hole inside myself, empty for most of my life, but now with a purpose. I loved myself enough for the first time to be vulnerable to the possibilities that this path opens for me. The signs that keep appearing in my life are the affirmations that confirm my movement forward. In life, love is the difference. Ken Germann, healer, lightworker, medium, is founder/directory of Ascension Today (http:// AscensionToday.com. He is a fully certified Reiki Shihan (teacher) and teaches Japanese Komyo Reiki. His own selfdiscovery has led him to understand the importance of being willing to take the journey with an open mind and open heart, and to be able to share in the laughter and love of life. THE HEART IS THE KEY

by Angela Lorenzo

Many are faced with this self-manifested dilemma: What if ?

What if I were to tell you that you are your biggest obstacle?

What if you already knew?

What if your true Self led you to read this?

What if you answer the call?

As we experience this journey in the physical body on earth, we encounter many reasons to steer our vessel to conform to the thoughts, beliefs, habits and roadblocks of others. This takes us from our happiness. As we begin our search of aligning to our true Self, we encounter many junctions where a choice is required. These involve choices about our thoughts and feelings. We begin to have to question many things that up to now have always been the way and always seemed to be the answer. The importance of confronting and releasing inner fears, old thoughts and past traumas is vital and words alone cannot help. Many of us are faced with lack and are always left unsatisfied. One huge step which is often forgotten is to be able to attract and manifest a life aligned with our true Self. To do this, we must first detach from old learned fears, feelings and habits and allow ourselves to understand what our hearts truly desire and attain an understanding of the importance of attuning to those true desires. To attract and manifest from a clear mind and open heart brings forth a truly inspired, abundant and love-filled life.

We try to create grand pictures of the great control we have on things. We create justifications, labels and names for experiences, thoughts, processes, causes and effects and more. These are complex devices we create that separate us from the true knowing and understanding of the unity of all things, the unity which brings us back to alignment with what our heart is always seeking: to realize a happy, loving, peaceful, abundant, fulfilled life now. The great seers of the past lived as hermits to truly understand how to have everything we could want. Now we search our endless concrete jungle living among millions of conveniences and the true knowing that we once knew what was handed down through our DNA. We have disconnected from that truth and know only how to lack and attract more lack into our lives. The key to manifesting, to attracting what we desire, is to look deep inside ourselves first and define who we are. Then our hearts help us to see what makes us happy, and in love we give and serve. Then money and the lives we have always imagined begin to unfold before our very eyes. Angela Lorenzo resides in Apopka on her ten-acre retreat. THE MOUSE TRAP

by Diane J. Ackerman

I

am often asked why should I care about another person’s problems or angry outburst, especially if they are not directed toward me? In reply, I reference the parable of the mouse and the trap. IT GOES LIKE THIS... A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. The mouse wondered, “Is this package something I can eat?” However, he was devastated to discover it was a mouse trap!

Retreating to the farmyard, the alarmed mouse told the chicken, “There’s a mouse trap in the house! The chicken clucked and scratched, then raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell you are concerned, but it is of no consequence to me. Go away I can’t be bothered.” The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house!” The pig sympathized but said, “I’m sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do although I will keep you in my prayers.” The mouse turned to the cow and said, “There’s a mouse trap in the house!” The cow said, “Wow Mr. Mouse! I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.” The mouse returned to the house feeling alone and dejected. That night a sound was heard throughout the house. The trap had caught its prey. Much to her surprise, the farmer’s wife found a venomous snake with its tale caught in the trap. The snake bit the farmer’s wife and the farmer rushed her to the hospital. When she returned home she had a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with chicken soup, so the farmer killed the chicken to make the soup. His wife’s condition worsened and friends and neighbors came to help the farmer. To feed them, he butchered the pig. But the farmer’s wife still didn’t recover. In fact, she died! So many people came to the funeral that the farmer slaughtered the cow to provide enough food while the mouse watched from his crack in the wall with great sadness. The next time you hear someone is facing a problem and it doesn’t concern you, think again. When one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in life’s journey. We must keep an eye out for one another. In families as in the work place, we must remember how important each individual role is to creating a firm foundation for success and happiness for all. When we allow our selfish needs and personal concerns to override or take the place of those around us, we weaken our foundation, but if we work together as a united front, defeat is no longer a concern. Not too long ago, jobs were plentiful and we were relatively comfortable. Our fat cat attitudes caused us to turn a blind eye to the less fortunate. Today, we are all joining the ranks of the less fortunate. Whether we lose our jobs or not, we will ultimately pay a huge price for our indifference. How much do you care? Diane is author of “The Gathering,” a book of poems addressing life’s addictions, co-dependencies and obsessions. Her workbook on anger management, “Shut the Duck Up,” has been used with great success at The Anthony House, a homeless shelter in Zellwood, Florida. Please see ad this page.

Calm Gentle and

by Marie Mongan

F

or many women, especially those who have given birth, to hear words such as 'safer,' 'easier' and even to hear 'comfortable' in the same sentence with the word birth is far beyond belief. For centuries, pregnant women have been inundated with negative accounts of other women’s birth stories. Most have taken these stories as the only truth that could possibly apply to them, and they have come to thoroughly believe and accept that pain is a natural accompaniment to labor. Because of the modern image of birthing, women believe that their bodies are somehow flawed and destined to malfunction during labor. Their expectation and hope is not that they can birth their babies in calm and joy, but rather which of the predicted horrors might they be able to escape. There is, however, a growing number of women throughout the United States and in 34 countries around the world who are using the HypnoBirthing method, a childbirth education method teaching moms and their partners guided imagery, self-hypnosis and special breathing techniques. Couples are not only learning that it is possible to birth gently and calmly in spite of the media trend to paint birth as an agonizing experience over which parents have no control, they are also discovering that they achieve their births in a much shorter time. Women who are drawn to HypnoBirthing know and believe that their bodies were created to conceive a baby, nurture the development of that

growing baby, and to give birth. Are these ‘Super Women?’ Not at all. In fact, most of the women will admit that they were doubtful and quite frightened before they began their childbirth preparation classes and developed the awareness of what normal birth is. Their partners, in many cases were even more skeptical, afraid that if HypnoBirthing didn’t live up to its reputation when it came time to birth, they were in deep trouble.

Several Central Florida couples have chosen HypnoBirthing with excellent results since the founder of the program recently moved to The Villages. Statistics show that as many as 70% of the women who are birthing with HypnoBirthing are accomplishing birth without medication and there are fewer incidents of Caesarian sections, episiotomies, and interventions. Those who do choose medication require far less than normal amounts and many even report having comfortable birthing with no medication and no interventions.

I used these principles myself when I birthed my four children in the late 50s and early 60s—a time when women were routinely anesthetized. I later developed the program for my daughter’s pregnancy and birthing. Today it is taught by more than 1,350 certified practitioners. HypnoBirthing classes in Central Florida can be found by visiting www.HypnoBirthing.com or by calling the Florida offices of the HypnoBirthing Institute at (352)561-4296. A New Wave in Womens’ Health “Thermography is very much an extra, not an alternative breast screening tool,” says Dr. Peter Leando, founder and Managing Director of Meditherm. He explains that “thermography is not in competition with mammography or taking on the same job. Thermography works best in clinical evaluation as an adjunct to mammography and ultrasound.”

Breast Thermography

by Joanne M. Keller, ARNP

here’s a lot of buzz around breast thermography. If you are like me, the only thing that I knew about breast thermograms was that they didn’t hurt and they produced a really cool and colorful picture of women’s breasts. I them so interesting I referred my patients to surrounding towns just so they could go and get one done. I have come a long way in my learning since then as a result of many people urging me to find out more about Medical Thermography. DITI (Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging) is simply a brilliant technology that can visualize in color the infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface of our bodies. By doing so it can graphically display and record the subjective feeling of pain, detect early lesions in the body before they are clinically evident, monitor treatment modalities and actually record the healing process as it occurs. Many women are familiar with breast thermograms, but Medical Thermography is now being routinely used in many areas of mainstream medicine including rheumatology, neurology, pain clinics and vascular-related dysfunction. The big attraction for women to have a breast thermogram is that it is non-invasive

36

so there is no unpleasant compression of the breasts as with mammograms. There is no bodily contact nor any radiation emitted from the scanner and the entire process takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Thermography’s key asset is that it seems to spot active pre-cancerous breast signs some six to eight years before any palpable lump appears. In fact, thermography is the only known technology to detect inflammatory breast cancer in younger women. To better understand how breast thermography differs from breast mammography, we must understand that mammography can only detect breast disease that is already well developed enough to be seen with x-ray. Thermography picks up the subtle vascular changes over time that can develop in the body prior to disease development. Thermography works best for younger women where mammography is contraindicated because their breast tissue is too dense to “read” on mammography. Mammograms test structure and anatomy. Thermograms test function and physiology, two totally different animals altogether.

Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

The real purpose of breast thermography is to establish a baseline, a thermal fingerprint. A thermogram must be done in two parts, one study now and another one done in three month's time to establish baseline stability. Everyone has a vascular structure and anatomy that is particular to them much like a fingerprint. The necessity to repeat the study in three months is to establish that this “thermal fingerprint” is stable for each person. Then annual screening can be done to monitor changes over time for early detection and intervention as needed. There is no substitute for establishing an accurate baseline as a single study cannot do this. Men and women can self-refer for thermography and come away with a report that then becomes a part of their medical record that can be presented to their medical provider. All studies are done by certified clinical thermographers and are read by thermologists who are medical doctors trained to read thermal scans. This can be compared to radiologists who read x-ray pictures taken by radiographers. To learn more about Thermography, contact Joanne Keller at Womens' Health and Wellness by calling (352)385-26312. MONEY AND ABUNDANCE TO THE SPIRIT

by Ann Moura

Putting Money in the Proper Perspective

T

he subject of money is always a touchy one where spirituality is concerned. On the one hand, society judges a person’s success by how much money that person earns or how expensive and numerous are one’s possessions. At the same time, a person’s spiritual development is looked upon with the opposite paradigm so that the more spiritual a person becomes the more impoverished that person is because material things and wealth are no longer a concern. Essentially, society expects spiritual leaders to be poor and to freely give of themselves to those who are financially better off so that these recipients may gain some spiritual development while retaining their comfortable lifestyle.

of some kind to pay— food, water, electric, rent or mortgage, gas for the car, and anything bought on credit or through loans. There was a time when people went to the village well, fountain, or local stream with a bucket to collect water, gathered local wood to burn for cooking and heat, tended a garden for food, and mainly traveled by foot or horse and therefore never went more than a few miles from home in a lifetime. For most Americans, those days are gone.

Yet in today’s society everyone has bills

My grandmother used to give spiritual and healing aid to people in her community but everyone intuitively knew that the energy expended on their behalf had to be bound with an exchange of some kind. She was given something in return for her work, usually in the form of food, labor, or a small farm animal. Today money is the main energy exchange that people use, and it is not any less meaningful since it is the exchange the giver received for his or her own labor that is now being passed on to the one who gave aid. But a

between money and material or nonmaterial abundance. When Hurricane Andrew blew across southern Florida, my family had to evacuate our home. We only had room for a few things in the car and left all our material goods behind. My children could take only one item each and they each chose a toy with a special family connection. When we returned to our home and discovered it undamaged, we were all relieved, but the children amazed us with their observation that they realized now that the material things were unimportant in life—what was important was the loving bond of family. While much of life in our society is handled with money, we need to take the time to put that into proper perspective. Money is not harmful, but it has its place as the exchange used for everyday essentials. Material goods are merely the toys we play with and we should not get too attached to them. The most important abundance comes from loving one another. How we balance these aspects in our hearts determines our peace of mind. THE

SOCIAL FACTOR IN ABUNDANCE

WHEN YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY, IT CAN CAUSE MISERY. BUT I'D RATHER HAVE THT KIND OF MISERY THAN THE MISERY WITHOUT IT." -- DONALD TRUMP A great deal has been written about “prosperity consciousness.” Certainly, it is vital to think thoughts consistent with financial success if that is what we desire. The Law of Attraction reliably manifests what we think about, however much of the material written on the subject tends to assume that the individual is an isolated atom, disconnected from the broader world of which we are all a part. People who sit at home visualizing $100 bills floating down from the clouds without reference to taking action and connecting with other people are likely to find that the Law of Attraction results in simply more of such isolated visualization and those numbers piling up in the negative form of unpaid bills. Also, beware of the technique of visualizing luxury yachts and Italian sports cars in the hope of acquiring such items. At least research the running costs on those vehicles and decide if they’re worth it before doing so!

3.

Let people know you exist. At least in the early stages, every self-employed individual has to spend about nine hours marketing for every hour they are paid for their services. People today are overwhelmed with commercial messages from advertising, direct mail and the internet. Live communication in the form of networking, public speaking to groups and one-toone selling tends to be more effective these days.

4.

Build a repeatable formula of action which consistently brings rewards of abundance (financial and otherwise).

5. Once that formula produces results, find ways to constantly improve its beneficial effect for those who use it.

The precondition of abundance is that we know what it means to us specifically. As Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism, put it, “He who knows he has enough is rich.” We must also remember that abundance is the net result of a process of interactions with others and does not exist in isolation from the rest of life. The Law of Karma (cause and effect) is as powerful as the Law of Attraction. For self-employed people, prosperity consciousness is most effective when the following factors are in play:

1.

Think about how, from the client’s point of view, our services will improve their lives. See, hear and feel the benefits your client enjoys from making use of them. In order to know how to do this, it is vital to actually learn what clients want and how they want it delivered. This indirect thinking is preferable to focusing on the end results of the cash and material rewards received at the end of the process of providing a service. Learn from clients themselves how they can best benefit from our services. Constantly seek to improve the value they gain from the purchase.

2. Take massive and consistent action. Thought, emotion and action are all one. Thoughts multiply their power when they are associated with action.

FINANCIAL CRISIS: An Opening for Internal Harmony and Abundance by Yogi Amrit Desai FINANCIAL CRISIS provides a unique opportunity to

tap into the power of the hidden source within each of us. When we react to crisis our door to the mysterious source of power, inner strength and endurance closes down. Learn how to respond, and we perceive the tremendous potential hidden behind every crisis we face in life. We have a capacity to tap into the higher power of our own inner resources when we face hardships. It creates an opening to break through unconscious, harmful, habitual routines. A lifestyle that costs us not just in terms of our pocketbook but also health and relationships with those we love. Crisis is the time to clean up greed for more. Learn to simplify. The collective, unbridled greed and collective fear and sense of insecurity hidden behind greed creates financial crisis. The valleys are as deep as the peaks are high. The negative impact of the crisis is directly proportional to the luxury of the financial freedom we have enjoyed. This is the experience of polarity where actions and reactions are equal and opposite. This is a universal law.

own life. In a state of non-reactive, choiceless awareness we begin to rejoice in the multitude of gifts which the universe showers upon us daily. We live every moment of life fully and consciously. This flows out to family, colleagues and the entire world. You recognize that when you are the witness of the pendulum you are not disturbed regardless of which way it swings. For more than 40 years, Yogi Amrit Desai (Gurudev) has been a pioneer in reestablishing the spiritual depth of yoga. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world now teach and practice yoga as a result of Yogi Desai’s teachings. In 1970, he experienced a spontaneous Kundalini awakening by the grace of his guru, Swami Kripalvanandji. The yoga society Yogi Desai founded eventually grew to become Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, one of the largest centers of its kind in America. He has been honored in the U.S. and abroad. Some of his distinguished titles include the rare Vishwa Yoga Ratna, awarded by the President of India. Yogi Desai is the author of six books and 45 CDs on yoga and holistic living. Yogi Amrit Desai can be contacted at info@amrityoga.org. Learn more at: http://www.amrityoga.org. Please see ad this page.

This is the time to reflect on how excessive indulgence in pleasure and power can alter the sense of prosperity into a false sense of poverty. It progressively drives our lives farther and farther from the true source of joy and fulfillment. This is the time to readjust and restore balance. When we recognize the underlying unity behind the apparent opposites of polarity, we realize that they are not against each other. The natural rhythms of life work like a pendulum. When a pendulum appears to move to the right, it is gaining momentum to begin its journey toward the left. When we use money as an exclusive source to buy happiness, we move farther away from the real source of happiness and abundance which lies within. The most effective way to solve a problem creatively and intuitively is to solve it at the source. The primary source of every problem is not outside, not external. It resides in our ability to move beyond personal reactions so we can see the light beyond the darkness. When you are in reaction, you attempt to solve a problem that partly exists only in your reaction. The Amrit approach to healthy living and life teaches how to step out of this reactive mode. You enter the Zero Stress Zone.™ When you do this you have solved 70% of any crisis. As each of us learns how to tap into our source we change our

Isaac in the Field

4 KEYS TO ENLIGHTENED MEDITATION

by Ramah Wagner, D.C. • Contributing Health Editor Being a high energy, high impact individual sitting still for 30 minutes every day was a great challenge for me. It was not until I spent a week at a retreat with Deepak Chopra devoted solely to the purpose of relearning to meditate. Oh sure, just like you I dabbled in occasional meditation groups. I also taught meditation classes, always quick to dissolve Christian skepticism by pointing out that Isaac was out meditating in nature while his soulmate was being delivered to him through the Universe’s perfection and as a fulfillment of his request of God.

I often pointed out to my patients known and well documented studies corroborating improved health through the practice of meditation. I always hit on the point of significantly lowered blood pressure in two weeks, less cortisol in the system which means less belly fat, and improved sex hormones for all of us who love to radiate the look of our youth. However, it wasn’t the health benefits that inspired me to spend a week meditating with a master of this practice. After some days of over seven hours of solid meditation I came to a few beautiful realizations about the practices:

1. The reason we stopped meditating. Usually we all can say, “Oh yes, I used to meditate!” It was because of ONE reason we stopped—thoughts! Someone probably told you that the goal of meditation is to slow down or stop thoughts. I learned that the average person has 60,000-80,000 thoughts a day. I laughed thinking I must have 90,000 thoughts at a minimum! Meditation is NOT about stopping the flow of one thought every 1.2 seconds. This is impossible to do. 2. Learn to see the space between the thoughts. Chopra calls this the “gap.” It is the space that can only be noted by noticing a thought and letting it go and then observing the next thought. Begin to glimpse some “nothing” in between thoughts. If you can just observe the flow of thoughts, you will observe an empty space between the thoughts. This is where the infinite field of all possibilities resides! 3. Let go into the mystery. Let yourself dissolve into the nothingness in between the thoughts. It is here that the order or request goes out to the field. It is then that the Universe gets your order and can do something with it. I realized this was what I was doing as a child when I was “spacing out.” I was dropping my request into the field between the thoughts! 4. Let go of the need to judge your meditation. Chopra emphatically stated not to judge what happens in meditation as good or bad. It was about four days into the seminar when I went through a horrible place I had never been. I went back to my room packed my things crying all the way through, shoving things into my suit case. Meditation revealed to me that I erroneously believed something was wrong because I didn’t have a soulmate in my life. I prayed, asking God to help me in my desolation and I was able to continue on with tremendous resolve and sheer will power. I finished the week-long retreat and felt a new sense of vulnerability wash over me. It felt terribly raw and sensitive. Each day I woke around five in the morning and continued my habit of meditation. Some days it felt difficult and many times I cried during the practice. Then, as my teacher taught, I let go of the pain as if it was just another thought like, “the sky is blue!” My life changed not in the meditation but outside of it. I was transforming. My business grew when normally it decreased at this same time of year. The right people began to show up in my life with incredible ease! I met my twin soul/soulmate and I love the relationship that is unfolding for me. I am only observing the effects of meditation in my life. They strangely seem to be a little like Isaac’s out in the field! TRULY IS FOR

by Shata Ben-Avari

YOGA

EVERYONE! Yoga for Those with

T

DISABILITIES

oday there is an explosion of enthusiasm and interest in yoga as it is gaining more and more popularity all over the world with an amazing accessibility. People are turning to yoga for many reasons like managing stress, healing the body from addictions, and even as a form of therapy for an ailment or injury. The truth of the matter is, yoga can and does serve many of these reasons, yet the real purpose is in the inner journey, which is unique to each of us. This is the journey in which we discover and connect with the true Self, your being at an exalted level where you unify with Universal consciousness. One evening early last year, I had a friend approach me about helping him with training to become a certified Yoga Instructor. This was not an unusual request as I had been approached with this question many times before. What was different this time, though, was the fact that this friend was an amputee. Although he had attended some classes, I never dreamed he would want to teach. After contemplating it for a while, I decided that we would adapt our Teacher Training program so that he could attend. There is no manual on teaching yoga to amputees as each person is

46

www.ReadVelocity.com •

different and unique. So we approached this as an opportunity to navigate through the challenge of optimizing a way for him to practice. With an open attitude of investigation and exploration, we co-created a program to make yoga accessible to amputees and others with physical challenges. Regardless of the mechanical possibilities of the body, we can all experience the transformative effects that lead each of us to our authentic wholeness. As I’ve always said, “If you can breathe, you can practice yoga!” Traditionally yoga was passed down from teacher to student, addressing each being’s unique interest and concerns. Yoga is for everyone and always has been. In fact, many of the great sages and rishis had their own different disabilities and came to yoga for healing and a fresh new perspective. Many times I’ve been blessed to have those with specific physical challenges come to attend classes or private sessions. Those with muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, brain damage, rare muscle diseases, and countless others, have realized and experienced the benefits of yoga. What I have come to understand is that we all come to yoga because we wish to live healthy, productive, and meaningful lives with a sense of true peace and inner contentment. With an amputee or those having sustained injuries to the limbs, imbalance will show up between the two sides of the body, so we focus on strengthening the core of the body first. We can consider the center of our body likened to an apple. The spine is like the stem of the apple, and all of the muscles that surround the physical and energetic spine are much like the core of the apple. We refer to this area as the core, which is vital to overall health and stability of the body and its subtle components. By bringing our full attention to the synergistic relationship between the breath, movement, and the spine, along with the strengthening of the core, we are able to discover, connect, and integrate the true Self of the practitioner. Yoga is a means of deepening our Self-awareness and this Selfawareness is the key to any process of transformation. The practices of yoga are a vehicle to uplift our vibrational frequency, to co-create heaven on earth by accessing the higher octaves of Light so that we can more fully embody our true nature of Love and Joy. Sand Box

There are three reasons why I liked playing in my cousin Rodney’s sand box so much. First, I suppose, is because I didn’t have one at my house. I had plenty of dirt and places to play, but Rodney had the real thing. Tattered boards quartered off a six by six piece of heaven filled with tannish granular delight. And real toys! Not stolen tools from dad’s tool box, or sticks and coffee cans, actual Tonka stuff. Reason two was escape. If I was at my cousin’s house, it was because we were having a multi-family get together Mennonites are so good at. They’re also good at propagating. If as few as three families gathered, there would be twenty five-ish cousins. Add to this my uncles, dad, and grandpa sitting in the living room talking two thirds Dutch/one third English. Mix in my mom, grandma and aunts clad in long blue dresses, white aprons, and that fishnet thing on their heads covering tightly rolled hair, busying themselves in the kitchen, and you get the picture. Sand box…here I come! Believe it or not, the third and probably most important reason I liked that sand box so much didn’t have anything to do with sand or Tonka toys. Fifty years distance me from those days, yet

by Oral Nussbaum my recent epiphany has shown me clearly the scenarios I played out with shovel and dozer made me feel noticed and appreciated. Here’s how I accomplished that. I pretended I was a giant in a land of little people. Randomly digging and chopping up the sand created impossible terrain for my small friends to traverse… till the giant comes to the rescue. Knocking down mountains with ease, filling in entire valleys with one load of dirt, then leveling and packing and ta-da…a road is born. Oh, were those tiny travelers happy. And me…I was noticed and appreciated, and that felt great! All grown up now, I see many people who feel like I did back then…lost. It has been my greatest joy to show everyone I meet, just how important they are. In that way…just for a moment, I can take them by the hand, and go back to cousin Rodney’s sand box to build a road or two. Born in Marshallville Ohio, Oral now resides in Winter Springs. His hobbies of writing and art compliment his neverending quest for spiritual growth. He is co-leader of a local writers’ group, and organizer of a monthly spiritual discussion group. He has been published in the London, England Dream Flight newsletter, Deaf Digest, and this magazine. He won first place and tied for third place in the Poetry Ensemble of Orlando’s annual poetry contest. Please see Oral’s ad this page.

Sand Box

Hills and mountains crumble under plastic shovel’s might. Buckets scoop the valleys deep, landscaping a child’s delight. Paint-chipped dozers blaze new trails in spite of broken wheels. My aunt’s discarded strainer finds two chunks of steel. Back-hoe scoop, rusted open in Tyrannosaurus pose. A moments thought when it was new, then out the box it goes. But for all the scoop-dump-crumbling and treasures I would find, where I really learned to play, was the sand box in my mind.

Serving the Community, Our Country and the earth

his issue’s theme, “Money, the material, and the non-material,” is just what SP Recycling Corporation is all about. I have worked for many companies and government entities in my 30-year plus career and I have to say I like this job the best! Why? Because everyone I work with at SP Recycling Corporation is focused on how to better serve the community, this country and this Earth by keeping useful material out of our landfills. We are truly are a happy group of recyclers! Many believe, “Money Makes the World Go ‘Round”; others believe, “The NonMaterial Makes the World Go ‘Round.” As always, it’s a balance of both, however if you are not moved by the non-material, that is, inspiration and passion, then nothing in the form of material or money will appear in your life! Nearly 30 years ago the founders of SP Recycling Corporation looked at options to get old paper to the mill to keep it running and producing 100% recycled newsprint. The obvious method was to purchase old newspapers from the waste haulers and return overruns from newspapers back to the mill. That was back in the day when we recycled only newspapers, and in fact, SP was originally owned by a group of newspapers who figured it was the best way to make sure they had enough paper for their print shops! Paper procurers then had a moment of inspiration. The logic was akin to: Newspapers serve the community. How can we further serve the community in our cycle of recycling? The answer: FUNDRAISING-RECYCLING. The concept was unique and immediately caught on because it gave inspired groups of people a tool to raise funds for things like food banks, glasses for the needy, educational supplies for schools, local social outreach programs, mission projects in other countries, and on and on. The program enabled all this while gathering up paper that otherwise would be put in a landfill. The program also helped communities as it still does today in many locations that do not have curbside recycling service. Win-win! A great combination of non-material inspiration, providing money to people who want to further provide material goods needed by still more people. This is a great business and I obviously love my work! I sell nothing. I share an idea, show people how to make the program work and then enable money to come directly to them if they are willing to recycle newspapers, magazines, catalogs, and office paper. Doesn’t get much better than that! Still more good news in an industry that many people mistakenly believe is becoming a thing of the past, recently released world newsprint stats show that the demand for newsprint is on the increase, up globally 7.4%. SP Recycling Corporation continues to grow, opening last year a Division in Bradenton and now this Spring, a new Division in Hernando County. Be a part of a growing and green industry! Call me. Let me show you how you can be part of the never-ending cycle of fundraising-recycling! Learn more about paper recycling at the SPRC webpage: http://www.sprecyclingflorida.com. The Sisterhood he Sisterhood The Sisterho The Sisterhood he Sisterhood The Sisterhoo e Sisterhood The Sisterhood he Sisterhood The Sisterho he Sisterhood The Sisterhoo e Sisterhood The Sisterhood he Sisterhood The Sisterho he Sisterhood e Sisterhood The Sisterhoo by Pat Jocelyn

Even in ancient times, positive-thinking women discovered that whenever they gathered together, wonderful things happened. Ideas and knowledge were shared, spirits were uplifted and even souls were sometimes healed.

And now in modern times, we women still have a natural knack for quickly bonding with one another, particularly when placed in a safe environment where we feel protected and free to speak, to laugh, to cry, to share our innermost feelings—all without fearing judgment from others. And the thing that is quite remarkable is our backgrounds can be as diverse as there are fish in the sea. We can be the healers, the nurturers, the mothers and grandmothers, the breadwinners, the caregivers, the educators or the peacemakers. We can be 20 years old, 50 years old or 80 years old—age does not discriminate—because ultimately we are all sisters facing the same life challenges. But sometimes in our eagerness to help others, we women do forget that we also need to be nurtured and healed. We are very much like a garden requiring tending—the garden will stop producing if it doesn’t get the appropriate care. What was once a vibrant oasis can quickly become a barren wasteland. Spending time with other women is a wonderful way to receive some of that nurturing.

would discover that other women have traveled the same road and would also discover that the other w o m e n ’ s destinations were reached. That’s a powerful piece of knowledge, knowing that you are not alone.”

Whether it’s attending a weekend spiritual retreat or just hanging out at your home with several girlfriends, know that you are giving and receiving strength and love from your sisters.

And that’s a good thing. A very good thing.

Pat recently retired as a feature writer for a central Florida newspaper. Prior to moving to Florida, she worked for a large computer firm specializing in corporate education and employee development programs. She is a very spiritually grounded woman and treasures the many friendships she has with her like-minded sisters. Please see ad below.

Whether it’s sipping a glass of wine after work or sitting at a friend’s kitchen counter and sharing a cup of coffee, we are relieving some of the stress and taking back a bit of control in what can be a very chaotic world. And in the process, if we’re lucky enough, we can begin to nurture and heal ourselves both physically and spiritually. Vickie Haren, a clinically certified life coach, Reiki master and holistic health educator understands this need for women to gather together and nurture one another spiritually. “Women need to find and feel empowerment within themselves,” Haren said recently. “They need to know that it’s possible to reclaim that strength and well-being and spending time with other like-minded women allows that empowerment to unfold. It’s quite a wonderful process to observe and be a part of.”

Haren knows a thing or two about women gathering together and the positive impact it can have on their lives. She has sponsored several women’s spiritual retreats in Lake County in the last two years. “Even if there was no set agenda other than having a gathering of women sit in a circle, you can bet your bottom dollar that within 30 minutes, life stories would begin to be shared and advice would be offered and received,” Haren continued. “They

Live Your Passion ~Reap Prosperity

by Debbie Paulk

I’ve heard the saying, “You reap what you sow,” since I was a young girl. But throughout my life it has taken on new meaning, especially in the area of money and prosperity. Money represents a medium of exchange of dollars or coins, an exchange of energy. Most people earn money by working a particular job. We are, in essence, using our energy in the performance of a task or ability in exchange for money. We then use that money to purchase products, services and goods to support ourselves and our lifestyle.

I have come to realize that all of us are born with the source of prosperity within us, however some have not realized or tapped into it. Our source of prosperity is our natural born talents, skills and abilities, what we are passionate about. We all have something that we love to do and when we are doing it we lose all track of time. When we are doing what we were born to do in life we are filled with energy, enthusiasm and passion. That natural flow of energy that runs through our body is our source of prosperity.

I’ve read that most successful people, when interviewed about how they became so successful and prosperous, responded by saying that they love what they do. They had a real passion for what they were doing.

When we tap into our source of prosperity, those things we are passionate and inspired about flow from us naturally and easily. That is when we truly thrive. Our needs are easily met. We see the physical manifestations of

our desires. Life is filled with purpose, passion and prosperity. We are happy and fulfilled doing what we love in life. It makes sense to use our positive energy on what we are already good at and passionate about and turn it into a meaningful profession that we love and are enthusiastic about. Think about the source of our prosperity as a gift given to us freely, something to be appreciated, something to be loved. Now take that gift and share it with others and the world. When we sow our passion, we reap prosperity.

Our source of prosperity is our natural born talents, skills and abilities, what we are passionate about.

I

My Son, My Hero

believe that everything in life brings an opportunity if we are open to it. My son, John, recently traveled to California for a tournament. Much more than an event, the tournament provided an opportunity for him to put his own beliefs in action and grasp lessons beyond his years.

He won the first six rounds of the tournament. One more win would take him to the final day. Just before the next round was to start, a friend said, “I hope you lose the rest.” Wow, what a bad shot of energy! John admitted it got to him. He also shared that he’s learned not to let that happen. It’s a huge moment when we learn that we have choices about what we allow to affect us and to make choices that serve us well. He also shared that as he was losing the following game, his focus was on his mistakes. The more mistakes he focused on, the more mistakes he made. He recognized the deadly spiral in that game and brought away another life lesson: We get more of what we focus on and it is essential to focus on the positive. It amazes me how aware my son is. He really lives his life, taking the blessings and the lessons in each moment he lives. He could have been resentful. He could have missed the lessons, but he didn’t. He’s my hero. He really lives! As my son left the tournament grounds to get a bite to eat, he passed a man with a sign, “Hungry, please help.” John makes a practice of helping those in need. Instead of getting a sandwich and bringing it back, my son invited the man to eat with him.

by Joanna Hackley Davis

My son had taken the man to lunch feeling he was doing him a favor only to become aware that he received much more than he gave. This man was far richer than John would have guessed when they met. Materially, the man had little, but his spirit was overflowing with everything a soul could ask for or desire. As they parted company, the man’s last words to my son were,

“Thank you for feeding the masses.”

There are those who entertain angels unawares. My son, my hero, is one of them. So are you. Joanna Davis received her Certification as a Life Coach through Coach for Life, the original spirit-based, accredited coach training. Her work in the healing arts began over 30 years ago in Massage Therapy and continues with certifications in Reflexology and Hypnosis. She is also experienced in Energy Healing, Tarot, and other mystic practices. Please see ad this page.

The man never asked my son for anything but gratefully received what my son offered. As they ate, my son asked the man about himself. It had been many years since the man had been in touch with his family. He shared that the street had not always been his life. He was once married to a woman who told him her husband had passed away. As he was riding home on the train one day, he saw his wife with her so-called ‘late’ husband. He approached her and asked if this was her husband. After she admitted this was her husband, my son’s new friend wished her a very happy life together. He never saw her again and even told my son that he still hopes they have a happy life. As they shared time together, they discovered a mutual love of reading. John asked what the man liked to read and he pulled out a bible. They talked about their beliefs, finding many more similarities than differences. John told me that it confirmed for him that “Truth is Truth,” no matter where it is found.

Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

OUR UNFAILING SOURCE

W

by Rev. E. Ann Otzelberger, NST

hen we talk about Abundance, we are talking about one of the natural laws. Natural laws are a body of laws that may be considered as derived from nature, right reason or religion and is ethically binding in human society. Many natural laws have a wide scope of influence and apply or overlap into both the physical and the spiritual world. The Law of Abundance is also known as the Law of Supply and this law most often brings to our mind a picture of having a large supply or prosperousness and well-being. This law may apply to our material world or our spiritual world. So when we think of abundance, we think of having more than what we need or perhaps even more than what we want of something. Living with thoughts that are positive will help us create the abundance for which we search. We must let go of all negative thoughts about the supply being depleted or about not having what we need. We must let go of thoughts that we are not worthy of receiving the abundance we want or need. We do deserve what we want or need, the supply is there and we need only to bring this abundance into our lives.

We must remember that abundance does not only mean wealth, but those things which money cannot buy are extremely important. Remember that health, strength, peace of mind and joy are important in our lives. Spiritually our i n d i v i d u a l consciousness is the law, thus we control our supply. Being in tune with and being a part of the source, we can continually produce our needs or the outer expression of the inner being. Our supply is never depleted. It never runs out. The supply will be with us and for us always. The supply will surrender to us according to our demand. The supply does not become affected by talk of lack or loss. Only we are affected by this type of talk, thus we control our supply with our own thought. Do not expect that in a few moments or a few applications we will realize a full consciousness of plenty. We must realize that by working and proving the law, we do so step by step, with each step bringing ourselves closer to our goal. Remember the unfailing resource is willing to give. It has no choice in the matter. If we continue to pour out our thoughts into this substance, this will make us prosper. As we learn to turn the energy of our mind upon ideas of plenty, love, happiness, joy and health, they will in turn appear.

Abundance is based on our ability to live in the conscious awareness of the source of all things. As we understand our oneness with the Infinite we are able to bring the Law of Abundance into fulfillment in our lives. As we become aware that all that is, is rightfully ours, we have no limits placed on what we have in our lives Reverend E. the word on books>>>>> No one said being an adolescent was easy. Children are plagued by a whole host of problems in school and at home—from overcoming rejection by the “in-crowd” to combating depression to conquering shyness. With the increasing incidence of cyber-bulling, peer pressure and the overwhelming need for social acceptance, today’s playgrounds start resembling a battleground where children must learn the strategies to successfully survive their adolescence (with their egos and selfesteem intact). Expert psychologist Judy Kuriansky and author Edie Hand explore these challenges in 31 Things to Raise a Child’s Self-esteem to help you instill values in your adolescents and create a healthy environment in which they can thrive. With easy-to-understand tips, lessons, and exercises in each chapter, 31 Things will help you teach your child how to: • Overcome rejection by the in-crowd • Gain a healthy perspective of his or her body • Make good decisions and take on responsibility • Overcome shyness and jealousy

In the image below, the spine on the right, taken from a medical textbook published in 1911, shows a gently curved, elongated “S” shaped spine. The image on the left, taken from a medical textbook published in 1990, shows a “J” shaped spine, with significantly increased curvature in the lower and upper back. According to Esther, the spinal shape in the illustration from 1911 is shared not only by our ancestors, but also by adults in traditional cultures today that have significantly less back pain, as well as young children. Esther developed an anthropologically-based method for pain based on observations of people with low back pain. The method, outlined in her book 8 Steps to a Pain Free Back, teaches people how to sit, bend and lie the way our ancestors and other cultures with low incidences of back pain do.

Walking through Illusion: Jesus Speaks of the People who Shared His Journey, by Betsy Otter Thompson, is written as a series of interrelated stories that, regardless of one’s individual faith, give a better understanding of the spirituality within. The book is more of an emotional accounting than a historical accounting and is based on the premise that when we leave this world we don’t take our beliefs with us—we take the love we found from having them.

The pursuit of success can drive people to endlessly seek outside acceptance. Raises and praise from employers and social peer groups may be a sign of prosperity and progress but should not be mistaken for genuine achievement. Sheryl Towers is author of Seeds of Success: 17 Ways to Nurture the Greatness Within You and she shares that only that which contributes to a person’s overall happiness and enthusiasm can be considered true success.

Each chapter is devoted to a specific theme around a person—from Mary Magdalene to Judas to Pilate—and each chapter helps readers to recognize the power within their own emotional actions. The author believes that the secret to happiness is in giving what you want, not in getting what you want. Walking through Illusion also offers a unique question and answer format at the end of each chapter designed to help readers bring the ideas from the book into their every day lives in a meaningful way.

By using the metaphor of seeds blossoming into life, Towers adds a depth and personalization that transcends the standard step-by-step selfimprovement guide. Through seventeen basic principles, or seeds, such as honesty, integrity, and faith, Towers lays the groundwork for a life of fulfillment. Each tenet, when cultivated and practiced, can enhance a person’s sense of self and help them prepare a better future.

Back pain is more than twice as common today as it was in 1950. Esther Gokhale, pain specialist and author of 8 Steps to a Pain Free Back: Remember When It Didn't Hurt, found through years of studying posture and movement in different cultures that a major reason for this epidemic is the misconception of what the proper shape of the human spine should be.

Her Seeds of Success view is a combination of realism and optimism. Seeking true success, she admits, can take time, patience, and resolve. As someone who has risen above negative conditioning to live on her own terms, Towers provides firm encouragement to support readers through their journeys. Words of wisdom from respected intellectuals, sports figures, and business executives combine with inspirational stories to guide those who wish to add true value to every aspect of their lives.

The Source of Our Abundance

R

by Rev. Mary Blocher

ecently a friend conveyed to me over dinner how to survive the total economic collapse of America. She had been given tips by an expert in matters of survival. Such tips included the concept of storing food, securing guns and ammunition and getting family members in the mindset of preparing for the worst. As we gingerly ate our dinner I shook my head in confusion. Here we were living the American dream, eating massive amounts of food in an elegant restaurant, and having no concern about our ability to pay for the meal, yet we were talking about possible impending disaster that was fear-based. There was a part of my brain that simply could not and would not accept the bantering. My thoughts raced back in time to a story about Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of Unity, who had been praying about financial affairs during the Great Depression. A payment was overdue on Unity’s printing presses and the sheriff came to repossess the machines, but when Mr. Fillmore declared confidently to the sheriff that he had a rich Father who is going to take care of the matter, the sheriff believed him literally and said in that case he would give him a little more time. Mr. Fillmore continued to pray for prosperity and the money did manifest. The printing presses were never repossessed!

Rev. Mary Blocher grew up in Huntington, Indiana and graduated from Indian University with a Master’s Degree in Education. In 2005 she was ordained by the Association of Unity Churches International. She was one of the ministers at Fellowship of Spirit in Farmington, New Mexico which is associated with the International New Thought Alliance. In February 2007 she became the minister at Unity Leesburg. Please see ad above.

During the depression, the love offerings at Unity were less than usual. Myrtle and Charles Fillmore prayed specifically, boldly, and deliberately for money. They prayed for financial supply and rich prosperity. One day as the workers drilled for water at Unity Village they struck oil! That oil well proved to be an adequate answer to their financial needs throughout the depression. Whenever I remember such stories of increase that happened during the challenging time of the Great Depression, then I can more easily let go of fears that appears to be surrounding today’s economic downturn. Even with our current economic downturn the world still places an emphasis upon consumption. This shows up in our advertising and marketing techniques. Our desires have become massive, however scripture tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and all things will be given to us. It is a divine plan that seems so simple. Put God first and everything will be given to us as well! What are the other things that we will be given? We will be given loving relationships, vibrant health, immense joy and the unfailing assurance that God is our Source. With God as our Source what worries would we ever have about possible impending disaster?

Secrets For Living A Magnificent Life

Tough Times Are Only Temporary by Denise Gainer About five years ago, my daughter announced that she and her husband found property in northeast Tennessee and that they were going to build a home there. When I saw the land and the mountain views I knew they would be wonderfully happy there and that I wanted to do anything possible to help them get there. Besides that, I didn’t think I could be four states away from my grandson! I sold my home, packed up everything and made the move with no doubts in mind. It was a smooth move with all things falling into place. I loved my new home—a four bedroom split plan, huge decks front and back on an acre and a half with an amazing view of the mountains. All was wonderful until the bottom of the mortgage industry fell out. I had been working as a reverse-mortgage agent. The deep breathing I did was of monumental proportion in order to stay calm, positive and focused on finding a solution. No matter my efforts, doors were not opening. No employment. No money. I sold all I could and settled with the mortgage lender for acceptance of deed-in-lieu-offoreclosure. I moved in with my daughter, and frankly, was beside myself. Ms. Independent was homeless and dependent upon the kindness of others for my survival. My emotions were everywhere! For the first time in my life, I had no clear cut vision of what to do next! Then, out of the clear blue, I received a call from a girlfriend in Ormond Beach. She said, “I just had a feeling that something wasn’t right.” We talked at length and then she said, “I think it is time you came home. Come stay with me.” Two weeks later, with tears of joy and giddy with glee, I packed my dogs, my parrot, my clothes and drove back to Florida where right at the state line I was greeted by the most amazing rainbow I’ve ever seen. I knew I was where I was supposed to be. I stayed only a few weeks in Ormond Beach and then found my way back to Lake County, where I lived with another girlfriend when once again, the doors to what I needed opened. I share this story in the hopes of reassuring others who may be facing financial dismay that in losing the material, one loses nothing of real importance. Money can buy people, places and things, but not the truly valuable treasure of this world: the love of family, friends and even strangers. Know too, that when doors don’t open and the path doesn’t seem clear, there is a reason. Your path is changing even if you think it is not supposed to! Fuss, cry, be angry, and ultimately let go. You will find it is the release of things and situations you no longer need. Just know that with faith, focus and follow-through, you will be and have all the abundance you need. Regular Velocity readers know Denise is a recycling advocate, promoting SP Recycling Corporation. The last five years of Denise's life have been a remarkable journey of having plenty of money to having absolutely not a dime of her own. And back!
