love
is an astounding power in our lives, but before love can be fully expressed through us, we must nourish ourselves by giving time and space for our individuality to become acquainted with the life within. For our evolving awareness, that Divine Spirit being everywhere present illumines us so that we sense the Oneness of all life and our most important inclusion in it. We have an inner life and an outer life which require an innate balance and harmony between these differing aspects before we can expect to demonstrate honest love and creativity. Once our awareness, our consciousness, has reached a satisfying, emancipating blessedness, our purpose in life, our pathway is then expressed with ease. It is amazing how things turn around when we come at life from a “highest good” point of view. “Highest good” is one demonstration of a life lived with balance and harmony. From within a life of awareness and high expectations we emanate a sense of love. The vibrations we send out into the world are a match to our sense of love. Like unto like is drawn. So it is that we come to realize the importance of giving equal attention to both our inner and our outer lives.

what matters most in life
is that life begs your full expression of it BY LOUANNE HEADRICK It seems that what matters most in life is that we find our center, our connection to the Source of all Life, the very thing that defines our wholeness and our ability to create in an unburdened fashion. After all, what matters to most of us is finding the path that speaks to our core, that enlivens us, that produces unstoppable inspiration. We desire to reach this place of knowing, recognizing that we are on target, feeling fulfilled in our everyday moments, perhaps as Eckhart Tolle says, “in our now.” To reach this level of satisfaction, we are required to attend to the Wisdom and Love within. How better to selfperpetuate fulfillment than by recognizing the invisible power within the balanced concept of Body, Mind and Soul. It is all
about recognition, awareness, being conscious, and being grateful. We each have dreams and goals, but as we age we see that they can become meaningless unless we act on them. The greater part of the action plan should include a gift to ourselves; a planned journey for the purpose of learning about Spiritual Principles. There is more than a wealth of information written ages ago (ancient wisdom) or in the now. When on a quest, let your intuition be your guide. It is amazing how one who seeks is led to the perfect information. Just remember to listen when the Universal Mind speaks. Spend some time being quiet for this purpose. Open yourself, your time and your mind to this all important journey of the Soul, toward Spiritual Love and the expression of It. You will be rewarded richly through creative living. Louanne Headrick is a Registered Nurse who served as Hospice Nurse and Staff Development Director. She is now retired. She is a Signature Member of the Florida Watercolor Society and one its former teachers, a member of the Golden Triangle Center for Spiritual Living and a longtime student of the work of Ernest Holmes, the founder of Centers for Spiritual Living. She is pursuing her final year as student of Practitioner Studies of Religious Science.

horses helping children
BY CHER MYERS
Explore a whole new world of rewarding and enriching experiences in nature ...
• Toward peace and health,
When asked if I would share my experience in equine assisted psychotherapy and learning, I immediately accepted the challenge. With over 17 years in the field of equine assisted psychotherapy and learning, I am still in awe at the wonderment of the powerful and healing benefits that horses offer. Horses challenge clients in a motivating yet non-threatening manner. They rapidly break down defense barriers, provide immediate feedback, and captivate and hold attention. In allowing the relationship to naturally evolve, it is amazing to see the valuable insights and learning that occurs. Much can be learned from understanding a horse. Equine assisted therapy and learning programs are well respected and increasingly popular worldwide in the fields of mental health and education. So imagine for a moment that you are a child. Imagine your world suddenly torn apart and everything familiar changes. Maybe it is a result of divorce or separation, death, illness, a learning disability. Maybe it is a mental health issue or traumatic incident. It does not matter. You feel terribly hurt inside. Feelings of depression, anger, uncertainty, anxiety, fear and stress disrupt your family life, relationships, social functioning, learning, and developmental milestones. As life changes, you feel alone, misunderstood, helpless, and confused. Sometimes you feel terribly angry inside. Now you walk to the barn with excitement and bewilderment. A horse is watching you. He walks over to greet you. He puts his head down and you touch him, cautiously at first. You begin to trust this horse. As you look into the eyes of this magnificent animal you feel his acceptance. You sense his patience, his curiosity, his strength, and his grandeur. Acceptance and awareness develops as the horse mirrors backs emotions. If you are a parent whose child is with the horse, it becomes easy to sense where your child is at emotionally.

This attunement helps the child identify and relate as the horse connects on this emotional level. One child said after his first session that it was like he and his horse had become "one.” He was able to relate to the connection that he was experiencing with his horse reflecting a movement from isolation to acceptance. Trust, compassion, and empathy become the foundation for strength and health. Anger, fear, doubt, and depression are replaced with feelings of acceptance, trust, confidence, and self control. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Nothing does as much for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.”

PURUSHA K. RADHA
What Matters Most In Life? Life as we have known it has changed in many obvious and subtle ways. Everybody knows a great deal is wrong with our country and the world. An underlying, not always definable angst plays backdrop to many peoples' lives. Most feel we must find solutions to our nation's and planet's woes, solutions that will bring us back to the way it all used to be. The truth is that this magical panacea either can't be found much less be agreed upon. It is clear that the real answers will be keys we will discover that will create a whole new reality. It is foolish to try to revive a way of life we have outgrown. As we enter this Mayan prophecied and most pivotal year in the convergion reality 2012, it is wise for us to let go of old ways so that we may live in harmony with all the multi-level and multidimensional transformations that are to come. Much upheaval will continue to occur as our Earth Mother births a new and higher velocity creation. We must now get down to asking ourselves, if we haven't already, the most fundamental question: What matters most in life? There are as many answers to this question as people to ask it. There is no one right answer, but for our brightest future, hopefully our answers will tend to be selfless. Our country is in confusion because there are too many people focused primar-
10
velo c it y
ily on themselves, people who refuse to see the bigger picture that we are one family on Earth each bound inextricably to the other. My answer to this question is that having my character in place matters most to me. If I am of the most impeccable character I can be, everything else will fall into place. I'll be a giving, sharing, cooperative, charitable entity. I'll have rich relationships, love and joy in my life, and opportunities for self-discovery and actualization I might never have dreamed of. Character in place embodies the quintessential opposites of the Seven Deadly Sins: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. I haven't been a churchgoer for several decades but the Seven Deadlies are right on. If my decisions in life are based on money, security and greed, my character is in very poor standing. If I am slothful and lazy with little discipline, my life will not move progressively and creatively forward and I can only very marginally be in service to the planet. The path of discipline and sacrifice is the one less travelled but the Divine sees all and blesses us for it. If I am anchored to carnal needs and worldly seductions (food is a big one), I have allowed myself to become trapped in the third dimensional world with negligible promise of rising to higher dimensions and realities. If I am focused on judging or resenting others, how can that possibly serve me? My lack of focus on personal responsibility and accountability will hold me back. If I devour everything before me with no thought of my brothers and sisters, merely to satiate and
anesthetize myself from truly feeling, I will become what I devour. If I am a taker, look for recompense and payback, drain other peoples' energy and am needy all the time, I will repulse those I have loved and they will leave my life. To ascend to the higher realms of Light, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, requires not just any kind of person. It requires more than lip service. It demands the most upright character one can muster. The Universe is mathematical. It runs according to a set of rules and laws which are never and can never be bent. I also know that perfection is not required– only the very very best we can accomplish. This takes complete and total honesty with ourselves. Too often, we talk ourselves into the lie that we are doing things for the right reason and that we are further along than we really are. We delude ourselves into seeing that we are something other than what the mirror truly shows us. This doesn't mean we have to get all down on ourselves and beat our backs. It just means to get honest because that's what it really means to love ourselves. We must love ourselves that much to get in real integrity with ourselves. It shouldn't matter who is watching us whether it's our superiors or God Itself. We should live out our integrity character primarily because it's who we truly are, essentially. How can we live with ourselves otherwise? (Yet many people do.) For me, without character in place, I have nothing. It's the cornerstone for living a conscious, mystical life.

Reversing Cancer Through Natural and Holistic Approaches Thinking Outside of the Box: Part Three B Y B ’J A I A B E N - AVA R I , R N , B S , M . D I V. In the last two articles on reversing cancer through natural and holistic approaches, we have looked at the role toxins play in contributing to causing cancer and how to correct and reduce the intake of so many toxins, yet there is one toxicity that most of us would not think of which effects all of us in very hazardous ways. That toxicity is the negative, self-incriminating, and judgmental thoughts and feelings we hold against ourselves and others. Yes, our negative, self-sabotaging thoughts and feelings are highly toxic to our bodies and contribute to the profusion of diseases we experience over a lifetime. These toxic thoughts and feelings have a cumulative effect in the body. Receiving the diagnosis of prostate cancer forced me to assess my life thoroughly. My review took me back to the age of three when I went to the hospital for ten days for repair of a congenital hernia. So many feelings came up during this reflection. Feelings of being abandoned, punished, rejected, not loved, anger, and much more. What I did at that age was bury all of these feelings and emotions, and unconsciously said, “I will never say or do anything to anyone to make them hurt me or reject me. I will keep quiet, bury my feelings and be safe.” And that is exactly what I did, however, over the years things festered inside me. I not only ruthlessly judged myself and hated myself, I also judged others, held onto sequestered anger, failed to forgive myself and others for past and present mistakes. Slowly, these infectious feelings and thoughts manifested in my body, creating a toxic response, thus contributing to the current diagnosis.
Three books to consider which speak to healing our own emotional toxicity: Feelings Buried Alive Never Die by Karol Kuhn Truman Healing Feelings from Your Heart by Karol Kuhn Truman Cancer is NOT a Disease, It’s a Survival Mechanism, by Andreas Moritz
If total healing is going to be efficacious, we must take serious account of our emotional and mental terrain. Who am I still angry at? Who is it that I have not yet forgiven? With an honest look we will find that the principal person we are angry with and have not forgiven completely is ourselves. Perhaps we are still angry at past mistakes which we still dredge up and for which we beat ourselves up. Have we not forgiven ourselves over faults and blunders made long ago? Holding on to these causes highly toxic effects in the body which, over a lifetime, manifest as disease. Still we must go further and question, “Other than myself, who am I still angry at and have not yet forgiven? Who has hurt me so badly that I am still clinging to the pain?” Clutching onto these past emotional injuries causes the body to respond in a self-protective mode, and it does this by creating toxins which slowly, over time, poison the body and cause disease. We are powerful alchemists, whether we know it or not. Every thought, every emotion, every feeling has a powerful effect in the body, and holding on to anger and unforgiveness, whether toward ourselves or another, are two of the most powerful contributors to toxic buildup and diseasement in the body. We can easily reverse many of the external toxins we ingest through implementing a detoxifying program. This will have a very good and much needed effect, however, if we do not detoxify ourselves from our negative, judgmental and destructive thinking, and the feelings which accompany these thoughts, whether about ourselves or others, and remain locked into our anger and unforgiveness, we have not rooted out the most venomous of toxins which will continue to poison the body and keep us in a cycle of diseasement. To begin to reverse these destructive emotional toxins, and thus the cumulative physical toxicity, we must embark on a path of loving self. Yes, LOVING SELF. There is no other way. How do we do this? Take time for self. Pray. Meditate. Take long walks in the sun. Share your feelings with someone you trust and who will not judge you. Listen to music. Speak lovingly to yourself. Take time to be alone and quiet. Being silent with oneself is very healing on multudinous levels. Acknowledge mistakes, forgive yourself, and forgive everyone who has hurt you. These steps are critical to reversing these hidden and virulent toxins. In my own path to reversing this prostate cancer, I left my job and have taken months to be with myself. Everything mentioned above I have incorporated. I am also reading books that nurture the soul. I do yoga daily, and, I eat only a vegan diet of living (raw) organic food. None of my food is processed and none of it is cooked. The diagnosis of cancer can be a powerful wake-up call if we allow it. We have the power within us to heal ourselves. Indeed, there are many approaches to reversing cancer, however, the ultimate healing comes from within. We are the masters and directors of our lives. Everything we choose has a consequence. May we choose total healing on all levels, physical, emotional and spiritual. B’jaia Ben-Avari's nursing career traverses more than 40 years touching upon many aspects of healthcare. CONSCIOUS EVOLUTION One of the most abundant forces in our Universe–FREE for all of us to share–is Momentum. You may not see, hear or smell it, but it is always there for the taking. It has no limits.

MOMENTUM – A UNIVERSAL FORCE THAT REALLY MATTERS by Tim Yero
A Universal Force That Really Matters

Momentum works both ways–for or against you–positive/negative. When you may be feeling a bit down, try putting yourself in someone else's circumstances, someone you know who is worse off than you are. Now place your own ailments and woes in a lesser order of thought. Think about how well-off you really are. With this perspective in mind, think of what is good in your world and yourself. Think about some of your happiest of times. Smile. Visualize watching a good football game between two great teams. Picture watching, listening and absorbing the moments when the team you are cheering for is on the move. Perhaps they score on a spectacular play, or perhaps they recover a fumble. Feel their moment as they come back from behind and are gaining ground quickly. Feel the vibrations all around you, feel the crowd, the noise, the cheering. Shift your thoughts into a higher gear of joy, hope and happiness. This is good/ positive Momentum. Absorb it, as much as you can. It is endless. The more you think positively or negatively, the more momentum you will gain in that direction. If you are scored upon, are you going to give up? Of course not! Now take yourself to an inner place where all of your troubles lie. Totally squelch any negative thought and shift your thoughts ONLY to gaining all the positive momentum you have within you. Think towards your positive side–positive ONLY– about everything. Smile.
mentum on a positive side. There is enough negative momentum to go around without adding any more. We are still in the ‘game.' Shift the momentum you have. Gather those around you who share your convictions and avoid those who take all the Momentum of the Universe and make things miserable for the rest of us. When faced with doubts or risky consequences, you may be unsure or depressed. Think ‘positive momentum.’ You are on a great team–your own! You can score and recover a fumble. You are spectacular in every way. You don’t need to be a hero but you may be to yourself and maybe even to others, but only if you maintain positive momentum. Positive momentum comes at a really great price. It's FREE to us all! You don’t need a job, nor do you have to be a Superstar, but you do need to dump your negative and think positive… Smile. pon reading an interview with Deepak Chopra in Playboy Magazine (I know, it surprised me, too.), I was struck with a thought I felt the need to share. Playboy states: “These are uncertain times for many people and industries–for America itself. Is it a worthy goal to simply stay mindful of the present? In many ways not thinking carefully enough about the future is what got us into the financial crisis, the real estate mess, and the two agonizing wars.” Chopra responds: “Being mindful and being in the moment means not being distracted and not being overwhelmed by the melodrama and hysteria around you. Present-moment awareness allows intuitive and creative solutions to emerge even in the midst of crisis. No crisis can be addressed at the level of consciousness in which it was created. What’s happening in the country now is the result of our not being present to what is happening around us.”

As a new business owner, I’ve felt more overwhelmed than I’ve ever been in my life. Last night, I was stuck in a stressed-out state, and my boyfriend suggested, “Let’s stop working and go on a paddle. We need this for ourselves.” I found 15 more minutes to cram in as much work possible, then we put our boards in the water. Instantaneous relief. For the first time in hours, I was present and the feeling was better than any other form of release. My face grew soft, the muscle spasm in my right trapezius that had been trying to get my attention for the past few hours had subsided. The fresh air was passing seamlessly in and out of my nostrils... and I felt complete inner peace. With Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), it’s necessary to maintain present awareness and mindfulness. As most SUPers will tell you, the moment you lose focus, or start to get into your head, splash! You find yourself in the water. This is the gift… a practice that allows us to get out of the drama of past and future and into the peace of right here and now. It can help us get out of the conflict in our minds. This is what makes board sports, yoga, Pilates, Bala Tula and similar practices so incredibly therapeutic. This is what my business, Wave of Wellness, is all about. We formed this company because we want to live and share our passion all the time, not just in our limited free time. We want to help people feel well inside and out. Our training not only has physical benefits like improving strength, balance, and cardiovascular health, but also mental and emotional benefits like increasing self-esteem, and finding inner peace. Last week, a woman in my yoga class said, “Wow! I came in here feeling so tense, everything was in knots. Now my back feels great and it’s like I’m floating on a cloud.” A couple days later, she came in again and said, “All that stuff you were saying in class about letting go of the things that are binding you has really stuck with me. In fact, my car is full of stuff I’ve cleaned out of my house that I’m taking to donate and it feels so good to let go of it.” And there you have it: physical, mental and emotional relief from one yoga class. In the midst of all you do to serve and give to others, give yourself the gift of present moment awareness, whether it’s through skateboarding or Pilates, surfing or yoga. You will find the instant relief you need! You’ll receive the opportunity to let go of the millions of thoughts clouding your mind and find space to let your true creativity and intuition shine through, guiding you on your peaceful and pleasurable path. Your gift is the present. Take it! For more wellness tips, contact Jessica Cichra, owner and CEO of Wave of Wellness, or visit http://WaveOfWellness.net. With a background in gymnastics and psychology, Jessica is drawn to activities involving movement and present awareness. Exploring a variety of adapted styles and techniques led to her creation of Bala Tula (a fusion practice of yoga, Pilates, Budokon, and stand up paddleboarding). She loves to surf, race paddleboards, skateboard and teach a variety of fitness and wellness classes. Please see ad top of column one, next page.

the Ark of NCE A L A B BY JO MALDONADO Dive into your imagination for a few minutes. Picture thousands of animals boarding Noah’s Ark, all walking slowly with deliberation and clear focus. No one is fighting. No one is bigger or smaller than the one next to him. No one has more feathers, bigger tails, or louder roars… it is moot, unimportant. There is no undertone of angst, anger, or resignation. It’s just all happening trance-like, in unison and in harmony. Step back now into our reality, your reality, and do a parallel. Use your imagination to picture the same image but with people, not animals, and the ark is your life where a new future awaits you after you sail the waters of trust with balance. There are many ways of achieving a state of balance without disharmony poisoning the scene. I have taught many classes and seen hundreds of instances showing how animals reflect the energy of their environment. If your home is relatively calm, your animals will be calm. If you step out of the calm, however, and yell and scream, other than the response of another human, notice what your animals are doing. Hiding? Lashing back at you? Or are they coming over to you and begging you with their paws on your legs to please stop? The state of even balanced energy is important to contain our sense of self, for healing and to flourish in our life. Anything outside of that will slowly chip away our energy, ourselves and eventually lead to disease and illness. In studying many techniques to balance and align myself better with animals, I have found Qigong to be the most helpful. It is easy on the joints, strengthens the breath and body, and brings a state of awareness to subtle movements that mimic those of animals. Qigong (pronounced “chee-goong”) has been practiced in China for thousands of years where it is accepted as a self-healing method and an effective medical treatment. The name literally means “breathing exercises” and covers a wide variety of methods for enhancing one’s Qi (internal energy or life force). Put Qigong together with the knowledge of using that energy to heal and you have “Medical Qigong.” In my studies and pursuit of advanced understanding of QiContinued right column, page 21 Velocity Magazine WHAT MATTERS MOST IN LIFE | January • February 2012

Practicing meditation and/or guided imagery during pregnancy, while in labor and throughout motherhood can benefit both woman and child. Several studies show that stress will make a pregnancy more difficult, but just taking a few moments to calm the mind, to listen to the “inner world” and to connect with the baby is a proven antidote to anxiety. Muscle tightness, mental tension, insomnia, nausea, and dizziness are just a few common symptoms that can become easier to deal with when a pregnant woman practices meditation on a regular basis. On a biological and psychological level, the mother is able to transmit the benefits of mindfulness to the womb and to the child through her bloodstream and through sympathetic resonance.1 The earlier in the pregnancy the mother starts practicing meditation, the more experienced she will become at staying present to emotions and sensations, understanding her instinctual process of birthing and tolerating pain. This will help the mother empower herself to be aware of the whole process of pregnancy and labor taking place. She will learn to access inner wisdom and guidance to help carry her through the waves of contractions and develop patience and confidence in decision making. Moreover, childbirth meditation reduces the need for medical interventions during labor, bringing physiological and psychological enrichment. For example, it can restore normal tolerance of pain as she produces endorphins. This important pleasure hormone is one responsible for reducing physical discomfort. Utilizing relaxing breathwork, nurturing imagery and inspiring affirmations can also be excellent methods to ease the body from stress, to release any worries about the progress of the pregnancy and to communicate with the child telepathically and energetically. This body, mind and spirit connection promotes the proper production of beneficial neuro-hormones and neurotransmitters both for the benefit of mother and baby. Cultivating a bond with the baby during pregnancy may also enhance the beautiful yet challenging process of birthing. We 1 For example, sympathetic resonance is a harmonic phenomenon wherein a formerly passive string or vibratory body responds to external vibrations to which it has a harmonic likeness.

Relaxation and Meditation Techniques for Pregnant Mothers • Whole Body Breathing: Observe the texture, temperature, length, and depth of your breath. Where do you feel your breath the most? Rest in the sensations. • Count Each Breath Cycle: Count from 1 to 5 or from 1 to 7 or 11 to calm the central nervous system. If your mind drifts away bring your attention back to the counting calmly, without any judgment. • Sound Meditation: Gently place attention to the sounds that surround you without any judgment. Stay fully aware of the present just as it is. Remain connected to inner peace. • Tratak–Candle Gazing: Focus your attention on a lighted candle without blinking for as long as you can until your eyes tear. Close your eyes and place you attention effortlessly into the space between your eyebrows (Ajna chakra). Rest in the awareness of the images that emerge. • Imagery: Transport yourself to a soothing calming landscape. Imagine, feel or sense you are actually there. Breathe and relax in that space where you feel safe and you can be nurtured.
• Progressive Relaxation: Gradually tense and then relax every part of the body from head to toes. Be a witness of each body part completely release pent-up tension and relax. • Yoga Nidra: This is a gradual body-part-bybody-part technique but in a specific order neurologically corresponding with different sections of the brain (the neo-cortex) for a deep state of relaxation. It is believed that one hour of Yoga Nidra equals four hours of sleep in physical recovery, healing and mental benefits. I recommend the "Yoga Nidra" cd by Terry Oldfield and Soraya Saraswati. • Affirmations or Mantras: Anchoring attention in an affirmation can greatly empower the mind to break habitual thought patterns and manifest wellness for you and baby. “I am peaceful”. “My pregnancy is progressing in perfection.” “I am healthy." “I embrace the moment just as it is." Mantras are powerful carriers and enhancers of peace and inner balance. Om, Amen, Shanti, Love, Peace, Shalom. Just repeat your favorite affirmation or mantra one breath at time. Settle into stillness.
must understand, though, that forcing this bonding can be counter-productive when the mother does not yet feel ready to connect with baby. It can be a very normal experience for some mothers-to-be to feel more the connection with the baby in later stages of pregnancy or even after the baby is born, however staying present and honoring the ever-changing feelings that arise and subside from moment to moment can transform the pregnancy and birthing process in whichever way it unfolds into a highly personal growth experience. Meditation can also become a doorway to perceiving the highly spiritual event which pregnancy and childbearing is. In the postnatal stages, the benefits of meditation can be transmitted to the child through lactation and breast-feeding and through sympathetic resonance. Meditation can be done while seated comfortably on a chair or on the floor with a cushion. Laying down or laying on one side can be better for longer meditations and when we have practiced for a while as to prevent falling asleep. Not an easy task when pregnant, right? But remember that meditation is to practice mindfulness, in other words, Viviana Collazo, Director to relax in alertness. E-RYT-500, Rev., Reiki Master/Teacher

Sometimes it’s the little things that get away from you, but when something big happens it can put things into perspective in ways you weren’t expecting. I lost my best friend about eight months ago to an aggressive liver cancer. She was young, energetic, fun-loving and would give a stranger the shirt off her back if they needed it. I tried to help with herbal therapy. I made a concoction that had every anti-cancer herb and mushroom there is in it, but there wasn’t enough time. I worked through visualizations with her, held her hand when she cried and helped her to the bathroom when she refused to have a catheter put in. The doctors gave her three months to live, but she never made it longer than a month. Her slide was rapid and painful to watch, especially when one of the last things she was able to say was, “I am going to fight this.” One never realizes what is important until a moment like this comes along. The one thing she kept saying was that she regretted not having enough time–time to spend with her child, time to take herbal classes and time to finish her earth house made just for meditation. The lesson I took from her experience was to do everything I wanted to do in life right now and not waste time, but I think I misunderstood the lesson. The last few months, the love of my
life has been fatigued and suffering an unusual pain in his side so I made him go to the doctor to check it out. A CT scan showed a small, probably cancerous, tumor on his kidney. It looks contained, and even though he will have to have half a kid-
Make Every Moment Count B Y D AW N G AT E S
ney removed, his prognosis is good. Meantime, I am making him drink an anticancer tea and helping him with visualization exercises to beat the cancer. This second experience with cancer has given me pause because there is a lesson here. It’s the same lesson, really. I just didn’t get it the first time. I thought the lesson I was getting when my friend died was to cram everything in and live life to the fullest, but with my love getting sick I have to rethink it. Maybe it’s not important to cram it all in. Maybe it’s more important to
make each moment count. My love and I were talking about the details of his wishes should anything happen to him and he picked up a feather from the table and said, “This was on my boot when I got home. Do you know what it means?" I looked at him, smiled, and told him it was a message that everything was going to be okay. Finding a feather in odd places is a spiritual sign for me that everything will work out. There have been times in my life where I was at my saddest (my friend's death was one of them) where I wondered how I would make it through, when a feather would appear in my path. So as we lit a fire in our fire pit and held each other under the stars, I realized that the most important thing is not to do everything you want to get done, but to make every moment count. That short time together was more important than getting everything done on my bucket list. BY COLLEEN GORDON Imagine the day you were born. The joy that was shared by parents, family, friends and even medical staff spills over in abundance just because you have entered the world. They are quite a welcoming committee! And the welcome is to the University of Life. You will have a lifetime to earn credits and eventually graduate to the next dimension. This may seem like a daunting task to someone so new to the world, however if you love animals enough to own a pet in your lifetime, then you have been blessed with an assistant to help you on your journey. Many pet owners understand the importance of furry family. Owning a dog, cat, horse or any other domesticated animal will be a challenge, but by having a pet, we will not only learn responsibility, humility and selflessness, we will also have a true example of how to live gracefully. Naturally, our pets do not understand the latest fashion. They do not need to have the hottest model car, or popularity or expensive vacations. Simple things make them very happy. Things like a new chew toy, a special treat, or just the quiet attention from someone they love are better than what the rest of the world would sway us to believe. Our pets love us without judgment. They watch us quietly at our best moments‌ and our worst. They are quick to forgive our transgressions and greatly enjoy the company of our family and friends. They always see the best in each of us. Our animals consistently enrich our lives with lessons of how to love without boundaries and to give to others Continued on page 25

After playing flute bedside for a patient in an area healthcare facility, I saw their monitor register an improved reading for heart rate, lowered blood pressure and oxygen uptake. The technicians recording their vital signs, would scratch their heads and say, “How did that happen without drugs?”
Lu' Musik
People have asked me that question about my own healing. There is a technique in playBY ing Therapeutic Music that CHERY’L isn’t just performance oriCOHEN ented and contrary to mass thinking, it isn’t just classiKERR cal music that works in this Certified way. What I choose to play, Music how I play, is all based on the Therapist individual’s condition and circumstances. In my training as a music practitioner, I have learned to be of service to each patient, addressing each of their needs in a unique way. I’ve had success with children with various learning disabilities as well as with adults who have too much stress and brain imbalance. The beauty of music therapy is that we don’t have to be ill to benefit from such a service. Just living in an unstable world today requires us to find ways to de-stress. In addition, it is a fact that live therapeutic music can regulate stress-related hormones. A few years ago, I experienced a backup in my system. I must have run out of Moses Brand Laxative! It comes in two tablets, you know, “Let my people go.” Insert laughter yoga here! Anyway, I developed a painful condition of hummoroids (hemmoroids)! That’s when you get too serious and can’t laugh anymore! The Ayurvedic herbs I needed weren’t available, so I looked at my tools. I had some color therapy stage light gels, a simple light, my flute and over 300 recipes for various ailments. Every day I played my music, sounds, used the appropriate colors, and in about ten days, the condition had reversed! I was wide awake now!!! After that amazing experience, I was more than convinced that music, sound and color really do work, not just esoterically invisibly, but with its ability to change matter. For about 15 years prior, I had used this same system at home on my brain injuries to help me focus and rebalance neurologically. It made a difference. After my fast healing, I became a student of Alternative Education Therapies School. After studying and passing an exam, I became a Certified Spectropathic Practitioner. As a lifelong flutist, I was guided to marry this with illuminated color. With the addition of color-charged homeopathic pellets and water, this system was dubbed, “Lu’Musik.” TM It's said that color, music and sound is the medicine of the future. Actually, it is here and now! Cheryl “Chery” Cohen Kerr, is a Certified Music Practitioner, (Therapeutic Musician) Flutist, Health Rhythms Empowerment Drum Facilitator, Spectropathic Practitioner and creator of “Lu'Musik.” On- on-one sessions as well as group sessions are available. Since 1995, she has used the arts as healing modalities for ages 4-104. “Chery” can be reached by e-mail, Cheryl@cherylsmagicflute.com, or by calling 407-897-7170. Please see ad top of column 1.

without expectations. As a pet owner, every day is an opportunity to learn to live more like the example set forth by these animals that love us. What matters most in our school of life? Learning to love unconditionally. It is the reason we chose to be a part of the Earthly University. If we ever get stuck in our lessons of how to treat others with kindness, we needn’t look further than God’s gifts of heaven on earth–our pets. Someone once said, “My goal in life is to be as great as my dog thinks I am.” Isn’t that the ultimate achievement for us all? Imagination Power (not

t’s the time of year again when many of us reevaluate our lives and make New Year’s resolutions. willpower) We are solid in our determination, “This year I am going to lose weight, quit smoking, exercise, and become peaceful." Yet a few days, weeks, or months later, we’ve fallen back into our old habits. Then we often beat ourselves up for having such weak willpower or lack of motivation. Most bad habits or negative beliefs have one thing in common: they grow stronger in the presence of nervous tension. How often do we try to release a limiting belief such as, “I am not good enough” by reasoning with our logical mind and thinking, “There is no real reason to feel this way?” Or perhaps a smoker or dieter tries to stop by reasoning with his or her willpower? Changes cannot be made through willpower alone because these problems respond to imagination power, not willpower. The way to create the changes we desire is to tap into the single most goal-driven mechanism that exists—our powerful imagination… our subconscious mind.
B Y M I C H E L L E A . S M I T H , C H T, HBCE, CHCI, HBFC, CCA
Every automatic habit we have is controlled by our subconscious mind. Our subconscious maintains a storage bank of memories that includes everything that has ever happened to us—every experience, relationship, word spoken—along with the emotions and the environment accompanying the experience. Our subconscious has neither emotion nor opinion. It responds only from the information stored within its memory like an internal computer. The subconscious doesn’t think, reason, or rationalize. It only follows the instructions programmed within it, accepting uncritically all suggestions and instructions, acting upon them without judgment whatsoever.
The subconscious can’t differentiate between something real—actually happening to us—and something we’re vividly imagining. The same hormones and chemicals are released within the body. This is a powerful truth because our physical and emotional reflexes are trained to behave in a ritualized pattern in accordance with the images we recall. It’s the feelings we remember, create, and imagine that shape and fuel our lives. Conversely, our conscious mind does think, reason, and rationalize, and often argues against what we want. It rejects any thought or suggestion not in alignment with our subconscious program. NO amount of willpower exerted by the conscious mind can override the subconscious for any extended time. If our critical thinking mind is arguing we can’t do something, we’re unable to do it. This is why New Year’s resolutions most often never come to fruition. In any battle between imagination and willpower, imagination invariably wins—NO EXCEPTIONS! With an understanding of these truths in place, it suddenly makes sense why we may unconsciously self-sabotage ourselves. We can say affirmations and/or do all the ‘right stuff’ but without alignment with the power of our subconscious, we can’t make the lasting changes we desire. Hypnosis is an excellent way to distract and quiet the critical thinking mind to access our subconscious. Aligning belief with imagination power creates positive changes we desire and the wonderful lives we deserve. Michelle A. SELFLESS MOTHERING
U. S. ranks last (that means worst) in the developed countries of the world’s mother and infant mortality rate? What happened?! Maybe we need to take a step back, to think again about what birth really is, to contemplate the power that it holds over the life of the family involved, and to consider that maybe going along with the accepted path of labor and delivery in the U. S. might not be the best path for, well, anyone except perhaps the medical staff?
Time to Rethink How We Birth Our Babies BY AREE PEARLMAN What do we know of animals giving birth? Lets take a cat, for example. This cat might be our best friend, but when Fluffy goes into labor, we should not attempt to pick her up or really demand any attention from her. A cat will find a dark, secluded corner and make a ‘nest’ of blankets or whatever is around. She will not take kindly to any disturbance of her peace. She might stay in that corner for a long time, maybe more than a day. Then, finally, with some possible low moans, or maybe even silence, out comes the first baby. Where does baby go? Immediately to breast. Suckling at the breast makes mom’s uterus contract, allowing the second baby to be born, and so forth until the placenta is birthed and the whole act is over. Babies then continue to nurse and mom only gets up for the essentials like food, water, and bathroom breaks. What do we know of birth when it comes to humans? If we are lucky, ours was a positive, peaceful experience, perhaps not so different than Fluffy’s tale. However, too many times, we hear just the opposite. Over 97% of births in the U. S. are in the hospital, over 98% get epidurals and other interventions, our C-section rate has doubled in the last 50 years and doubled again in just the last decade, there are more Neonatal Intensive Care Units now than there ever were, and who knew that the

Dr. Robert Bradley, father of The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth, calls this accepted path the “knock 'em out, drag 'em out” method. Sedate mom and pull the kid out by whatever means necessary. How many of today’s societal issues can we relate back to birth trauma? There is an argument out there that babies are affected for life by the way they are welcomed into the world. Can we say the same thing about those parents? What day of our lives is more important than our child’s or children’s original birth-day? What kind of memories do we want to create? We each have the power, the choice, and the opportunity to do better for our children. Dr Bradley teaches that no matter where we choose to birth, the choice of how that birth is handled–is ours. Aree Pearlman is a Bradley Method Natural Childbirth instructor and birth doula (labor support professional). She has home-birthed two beautiful children and is an advocate of parents’ rights and responsibilities. Look for more information about birthing the Bradley Way in upcoming Velocity issues. CONSCIOUS EVOLUTION
The Unconscious and the Hierarchy of Needs BY DAV I D B OTS F O R D
One of the most influential concepts in psychology is the idea of a “hierarchy of needs,” developed by the psychologist Abraham Maslow. Maslow argued that human motivation can be understood as striving for the fulfillment of different levels of need. Only once one level was satisfied, the next higher level could be addressed. The hierarchy of needs is often represented as a pyramid. The lowest level is the physiological needs (food, shelter and clothing). The second is safety. Most people in the Western world are satisfied in these two needs. The third need is for love and affection, broadly defined, from friends, family and lovers. The fourth need is for esteem, both self-esteem and the esteem of others. The fifth and highest need is self-actualization. As Maslow put it, “Even if all these [lower] needs are satisfied, we may still often (if not always) expect that a new discontent and restlessness will soon develop, unless the individual is doing what he is fitted for! A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately happy. What a man can be, he must be. This need we may call selfactualization.”1 The following exercise is intended to get the unconscious mind into gear and enable the process of ascending through the hierarchy of needs. 1 A.H. Maslow, “A theory of human motivation”, Psychological Review, (1943), vol. 50, p.382.

*
To begin, enter a tranquil, reflective state by breathing slowly, deeply and evenly, and perhaps listening to meditative music. Reflect on the satisfaction of physiological needs. Let images flow through the mind: a table laden with food, a comfortable home, and warm clothing. Know that this level has been satisfied. Then think about the level of safety. What representations flow into the mind that can act as reminders of safety?
*
Now reflect on the need for love, the next level. How much love is present in life right now? Is there unfulfilled need for greater love? Let images and scenes associated with love fill conscious awareness. What would the complete satisfaction of the need for love be like?
*
*
The next level is esteem. Examine how much self-esteem is really present. Assess, as far as possible, how much esteem others have for you. How far is the need for esteem being satisfied? Is it possible to recall a memory of an experience of high self-esteem and esteem from others? What would everyday life be like if that level of esteem were to be made permanent? Finally, think about self-actualization. This is different for everyone. According to Maslow, “In one individual it may take the form of the desire to be an ideal mother, in another it may be expressed athletically, and in still another it may be expressed in painting pictures or in inventions. It is not necessarily a creative urge although in people who have any capacities for creation it will take this form.”2 Let the imagination explore freely just what life will be like once those aspirations for self-actualization are realized. See, hear and feel it. 2 Ibid, p. 384. David Botsford is a hypnotist and intuitive reader in the Four Corners area of Florida. He has produced a series of self-hypnosis CD sets and is the author of the book, Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation. Earth Synergy BY ALICE JONES my children and myself. Almost immediately, I can see a positive change in my physical and mental health and at times even the relationship I have with myself, the Earth and my family. The sun seems to shine brighter, children’s laughter sounds more musical and you feel a sense of stewardship with the Earth, not to mention the electric bill gets a break.

It’s like a happy snowball! What’s happening is you are aligning with what I like to call Earth Synergy. Pure Source. Pure Love.
When
I ask myself what the most important thing in my life is, I get quiet a few answers. I could write a book for each topic that comes to mind, but when I connect the dots, it all comes down to one thing–aligning my energy with the energy of the Earth.
Earth synergy is a more passionate, purposeful and a much slower energy than most of us have been running on day to day. Do you ever feel like you are running on autopilot, fragmented and exhausted? Try taking your shoes off and walking in some fresh grass for a few moments or just lift-
There are so many miracles that take place in my life when I make a concentrated effort at reconnecting and aligning with the Earth and her energies. Perspective and priorities seem to line up on their own in a way that benefits everyone involved. One small example may be taking the time to get my children outside to play. Suddenly, I feel childlike and find myself spending healthy quality time with

What and where should we occupy next, outside or inside? Should we occupy somewhere important outside, over there? Will their lawyers agree with your occupation? Probably not, you think? If you’re not thinking, do you still have the right to question? Is it really about occupying someone’s realestate and being rebellious or about having the best compassionate ideas about our own governance and future occupation of our legal, military, industrial, medical and social systems? Do you still think we can think and question and reflect? Can you still your mind right now? Whenever you want? Did you forget how, can you remember? Do you know how to question and disrupt meanness without violence? Are you more afraid or more outraged lately? Does everything seem fair to you? Do you care? When was the last time you cared about something….with PASSION? When did you stop asking questions? Why did you stop asking questions? Has silence served you? Do you like being peaceful, happy and not suffering and/or at least having a fair shot at it? Would you like our laws and tax code to be fairer to the common person, workers and small businesses? Do you like being treated fairly? Do you think our leaders should be allowed to profit from decisions that help themselves personally but harm the very people they are supposed to have sworn to serve? Do our police forces, industries, and military still serve the people and should they? If it was illegal for you to think about what was best for you and the people you cared about, like your family, friends, community, country, neighbors, and the planet you love, would you still think about it? Does that matter to you? Do we have the right to occupy our own hearts and minds and dream of what a more compassionate world looks like? Do we have the right to privacy of our personal information from corporate and governmental search and seizure? Do we still have freedom to think, contemplate, innovate and educate? ruption? Is this still the land of the free and the brave or the apathetic and the safe? Do the free and the brave care about compassion, virtue and the good of the many and the downtrodden, the forgotten? Is everything designed for the benefit of the many or just the few? Are we smart enough to change our current systems towards compassionate governance nonviolently? Should we ask the media for help in making our current systems better? Why did the media not report that there were doctors and lawyers and marines standing side by side at the occupy movements? Why were legitimate concerns not voiced by the media and instead they just showed the misfits to discredit the middle classes legitimate concerns? Is there corruption in our system? If there is corruption in our system, can we realign and improve the system to weed it out? Should it be the job of the few or the many to innovate and lead? Should the media report on the subjects that matter most in our lives like what’s best for the many? What’s truly best and important for all of us? Should we focus on what’s truly important to us? Should we all ask for collective change? Could we learn new ways to work together? Where are the good disruptive politicians? Where are those sages that truly rule for the benefit and love of the people? Where are the leaders that occupy the halls of virtue and lead by love and not fear? What should we occupy? Should we lobby back our country from corporations and level the playing field to make it a bit fairer for the many? Should we cooperate and synergize? Should we learn from nature about symbiosis harmony and peace? Why does a corporation have more rights than a person? Where are the virtuous? Where are the smart compassionate ones? Why should we care for the other? What if it were better for all of us? What would that look like? Do you have anything your passionate about? What would make you passionate enough to get up and do something for someone else? If we could ask the smartest most compassionate and powerful people in the world to come together to help fix the world’s problems, who would we ask? If we could change the way we do government now into a way that was exponentially better for the majority of our citizens, what would that look like? Who are our heroes? Are they shallow popular distractions or true innovators for the benefit of the many?

Can we do any better than this or is this the best course of action for us? Can we and should we change the world? Is there anything worth being passionate about for the good of the other that you would move and do something for or about? Have we forgotten what is truly important? Who is watching out for our children’s future, if not us? Do we blindly accept others telling us what’s important or can we ask ourselves what is important to us and share it safely with others? Is it still safe to share and talk about our ideas? Can we re-learn to question what we have learned from our history so that we are not destined to repeat it? Are we destined to rise above our history into something better? Can we be courageous and reevaluate our own consciousness and where we should be heading as a planet? Should we stop poisoning our planet with the current energy grid and switch to better forms of energy? If we all gave truthful answers to these questions that were intended to serve the many could we try out the best ideas until we discovered the best solutions? Do you think our current leaders would listen? If they didn’t want to listen to us, what creative nonviolent ways could we come up with that they would have to listen to us? Are there any leaders out there who know how to ask the tough questions and truly change the system for the benefit of all? Can you ask tough questions and work nonviolently to create beneficial change? Is that leader you? Or will it take all of us? Are we still free enough to care about and do something to improve the very system we love? Can we still question the status quo if even in our own minds? Can you occupy your heart while you answer these questions from your highest truth and compassion? Can we occupy around every kitchen table in the world and ask these questions? If it’s not safe enough to ask these types of questions for ourselves, to our leaders, can we change that? Since we can’t come up with the answers alone, would you help us? Can we occupy our hearts and demand true change? After we occupy our hearts and minds, what and where should we occupy next? Where are the dreamers? Are they awake yet? Where are the free, the smart and the brave? Can they learn to work together for the benefit of the many? Let’s occupy a dialogue. Anybody have any answers? I have no great answers, but I thought I would ask some important questions for all of us to ponder! I thought that together “We the People” could fix and improve anything if we started to talk again about what really matters most to all of us! with magnanimity, we can then be trusting, considerate, understanding, and tolerant of them. It is by being generous that the skills, ethics, wisdom, and thoughtfulness we use when treating others well can be witnessed.
to be
Magnanimous BY VENERABLE MASTER HSING YUN
Knowing how to treat others well is the highest form of art in life, which many of us find impossible to perfect. The main reason it is difficult is because we have different personalities and different needs, thus making it impossible to please everyone. Though there are all kinds of skillful means for dealing with others, to treat people with magnanimity is the golden rule. Treating others with humility and respect is imperative, but treating others with magnanimity makes it much easier to develop affinity. Some tend to be mean-spirited and strict in dealing with others, thus, they find it difficult to win friendship and sympathy. When dealing with others, we should not look at how others treat us, but instead at how we treat others. In treating others
So what is it to be magnanimous? Let us look at the following anecdote: As “A” was walking along, someone pointed to his feet and exclaimed, “Why are you wearing my shoes? Give them back to me!” “A” denied it and the two started fighting over the shoes. When the same happened to “B”, he promptly took the shoes off and gave them to the other person. However, when this other person found his own shoes, he realized he had been mistaken. So he returned the shoes to “B” who was quite annoyed by it all and said, “Since I already gave these to you, I don’t want them back.” When “C” was faced with the same situation, he took the shoes off with a smile and handed them to the person. And when the latter came back with the shoes after finding his own, “C” was still all smiles and accepted them back graciously. From the various reactions of “A”, “B”, and “C,” we can clearly see what magnanimity means and the differences in their art of treating others. In treating others with magnanimity, we can also find peace and harmony within ourselves. Conversely, if we get upset over trivial matters and readily chide others for their mistakes, we become unapproachable. In the end, we will not be able to find any friends. In being alienated and troubled, we hurt others as well as ourselves. There is a Chinese story about a son who wanted to build a house, but had a dispute with the neighbor regarding a wall on the land. He wrote to his father, who was a government official, and asked for his help in settling the dispute. The father replied with a simple note, “A letter across a thousand miles just for a three-foot-wide wall! The Great Wall is still standing, but the one who built it is long gone.” Just like the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, we will all die one day, so why argue over trivial matters: Therefore, being magnanimous is the way we should interact with others, because it is the foundation for being human! — © 2006 Buddha’s Light Publishing (Revised Edition) Venerable Master Hsing Yun was born in Chiangsu Province, China in 1928. The answer to the question, “What gives meaning to life?” has changed for me over the years. First, meaning meant fitting into a family with five siblings, then being accepted by my peers, followed by employment, romantic relationships, and in more recent years, spiritual growth and writing articles for Velocity magazine. (The last one is really just to make the publisher smile.) Many self-help books today speak of the importance of finding your passion and following your dreams to give life meaning, yet many of us find it difficult to say what that means in personal practical terms. Perhaps the many years spent doing what we thought we “should” be doing has clouded our ability to see or remember what it is that would give our life that added punch. This uncertainty stings every time we read how finding our particular life’s meaning would bring fulfillment and bliss. We feel even more angst when we see someone who seems to know and follow his or her path so clearly and easily.
I Mean It
Ironically, these feelings of uncertainty and jealousy, by virtue of the Law of Attraction, only compound our lost feelings. I would like to suggest a different view for those who, like me, have felt like they were sitting on the side of the road rather than traveling on it towards a deliberate destination. What if we are already doing what we are meant to do? After all, not everyone will be a popular spiritual leader, write dozens of best sellers, lead a large movement, discover medical cures, or invent the perfect whatcha-gadget. These are not the only things that give life meaning, they’re just the flashiest and easiest to see.

The very question, "What is my life’s purpose?” implies that we don’t feel our life currently has purpose, but without the camera man, the grips, or the set painters, there would be no movie for the “star” to be famous for. Without someone driving the float, the parade queen or king would go unseen. I see tremendous meaning and purpose in being a good mother or father, being a caring friend or sharing time with someone less fortunate. If we back up our perspective and see the whole of life, the man who works at the hose factory is just as important as the fireman who BY ORAL NUSSBAUM uses it to save a life. Today my answer to, “What gives meaning to life?” is: Waking up each morning knowing that my presence on this planet is important enough that God kept me breathing through the night. I think being alive to help others, to share love and laughter, or to learn and grow is a very noble cause. So no matter what I am doing at any given point in time, that is my life’s purpose for the moment, and I can, if I choose to, give it deep meaning knowing that the universe needs someone just like me to fill the very spot I’m in. Born in Marshallville Ohio, Oral now resides in Winter Springs, Florida. His hobbies of writing and art complement his never-ending quest for spiritual growth. He is co-leader of a local writers group, and organizer of a monthly spiritual discussion group. He has been published in the Dream Flight newsletter in London England, Deaf Digest, and Velocity Magazine. He won first place and tied for third place in the Poetry Ensemble of Orlando’s annual poetry contest. Please see both of Oral’s ads, previous page.

At times, we can easily slip into our comfortable lives of daily routine believing that we will always have tomorrow. It’s unfortunate that it takes the unexpected death of a friend or family member to realize what matters most in life. After the sudden death of my father in 2008, I began to question life even more deeply. I thought I knew what mattered in life but I’ve come to realize a lot more since my father's passing. I was fortunate enough to have spoken to my dad and I told him that I loved him over the phone just one hour prior to his sudden massive heart attack. In one hour, life as I had known it had changed forever. I was devastated. I loved my father so much. He was my hero. He was my biggest fan. I am so blessed to have had a father who loved me as much as he did. He still visits me in my dreams. I had so many questions after my dad died and the answer always revealed to me was LOVE. For me Love is what matters most in life. First, it begins by loving our self. When we love ourself we are able to honor our true self and be authentic. When we use our talents and creativity in a unique way and share them with the world, we are expressing Love. I would like to share with you some of my epiphanies and lessons about Love.

The people in our lives that are the most difficult or act unloving need the most love from us. Choose to see love in a stranger's eyes. Love people even if they don’t love you back. Spread seeds of love to all. Love more deeply and more passionately. Tell someone you love today that you love them. Don’t wait until tomorrow. It may be too late. Love is giving and receiving. Love is powerful and gentle. Love is the answer. Help Others By Living a Better Life B Y R E V. E . A N N OT Z E L B E R G E R One of our biggest concerns in life is our spiritual well-being. Our friends and family are also very important to us. We want to be sure they are well and okay in all areas of their lives. Worries over money, how much we have and how much we need abound and many of us are perturbed about the state of our world, global warming, the economy, wars and, in general, the overall status of humankind. If we could find the answers to all of these issues, the world would become a wonderful peaceful place. I cannot place any subject of interest that I have and love in the number one position. I know that my family and friends, my church and my world mean a great deal to me. I hope that as I go about my daily life that I am making progress in the things that will make all people live a more joyful, peaceful life. As we live our lives in a way that brings to us the things we love, want and need, it will also help those around us. As we understand the Laws of Nature, we are able to live a better life and, therefore, add some type of better understanding to the lives of others. We could believe that as we live here it will make a difference in what happens to our soul when we go from here to the next world. I believe that as we live our lives, we will learn to be better persons and will actually make our own heaven or hell right here in this world. This does not mean that our eternal destiny will be fashioned upon what we did or did not do here. We can learn and make changes in order to bring about the kind of lives we want to live both here and in the hereafter. The Law of Attraction will help us stay within the company of those who want the best for all. This law will always attract to us the same things that we give out or believe, therefore we have the opportunity to make our lives as full of spiritual knowledge, friends and family, money and love, as we want. We only need to actively look and desire and it will be there for us. Knowledge of the Laws of Nature, or Laws of God, are the key to our happiness. Perhaps if we learn these laws and live accordingly, we will find what matters most in our lives. Reverend E. Ann Otzelberger is the Founding Pastor of New Vision Spiritualist Center in Orlando. awareness Above all else is awareness. Awareness is the vantage point from which one perceives authentically. There is no true understanding without awareness. Through awareness we realize our nature. Through awareness we respect and understand the nature of the whole. In awareness we reach a panoramic, multidimensional view of the world and beyond. From this vantage point, the source of issues and how they may become resolved are foreseen even before they materialize. Through awareness we perceive in what manner another is looking through his or her own filter, or whether or not they share awareness. Through awareness we know where the other is coming from and we’re able to discern the authenticity of any interaction. A 21-year-old client asked me what it meant to have no ego. I explained that once the ego is lost, there is no conflict because awareness must have been gained. She realized that clashing egos were co-creating the drama between herself and her roommate. I explained that the ego will debate that only one roommate could be correct while the other must then be incorrect in their behavior or perspective. With compassion through awareness, they could refrain from any encroachment upon the other. There would be no embarrassment involved in resolution because through awareness they would both agree, or agree to disagree, with mutual respect and fairness. Once we gain awareness we lose a few things. The things we lose we are happy to be rid of. Those losses include the ego, judgment, fear of death and all fear. Yet we begin to understand that these are not losses at all, but a renewal. This is rejuvenation. The rebirth. The resurrection. Due to these losses, we begin to gain. We gain real love, authenticity, compassion and vision. The type of love we gain is real unconditional love. Through unconditional love we express authentic compassion. “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”
[ Dalai Lama ]
Compassion is authentic unconditional love wherein there is the innate awareness that all are created equal. When we are compassionate, we release all of the “pathetic” traits: sym-pathetic, a-pathetic, em-pathetic, etc. We must release these traits altogether. When we harbor these “pathetic” low vibrations, we are performing a disservice to those to whom our “pathetic” energy is aimed or picked up from. We are acknowledging that these “victims” are pathetic and wrong or damaged in some way. Even

if we ignorantly claim that our intent is to be helpful towards the “victim,” we, in fact, are doing them a disservice. In turn, we do to ourselves the same disservice—we do to ourselves, what we do unto others, no exceptions. Once we let go of the pathetic traits through awareness, we replace those misplaced traits with the passion of compassion. Unconditional love is compassion and vice versa. It does not waiver and it is fully aware. There is no bias, prejudice or judgment. It is the highest respect for the other with the highest respect for oneself. It is to embrace choice. Compassion has no ego. Compassion is aware. Compassion arises from within once we have gained awareness. Awareness is the first step to understanding the All. Awareness is revelation. Before any other step can be authentically attempted or taken, awareness must be gained. Awareness is the universal key that opens all authentic doors and allows false passages to fade into illusion, out of sight and out of mind. Awareness is purifying. When we are aware, we are pure of heart, mind, body, spirit and soul. In awareness we are again virgin, able to see a unicorn and welcome the Christ to be born through us unto this world. If you were to ask yourself, "What matters most in life?" what would your answer be? If you had to break it down to our basic reason for being, what is it for you? When I ask that question, the answer I receive is Love–not the conditional love of human consciousness, but Divine Love that is unconditional, pure, protective, enduring, trustworthy, and selfless. Love is within all things. By recognizing that Love, it draws it to the surface, especially when Love and Light are hidden by density and darkness, like clouds blocking the light from the sun. All things come from Love, the Love of our Creator. Discordant energy covers up the Light and Love inherent in all things. Love charges energy with a high vibration that rises above negativity and clears any obstacles. How do we begin to bring this energy of Love into our everyday experience of life? Be Love. We were created by Love and our true nature is Love. Loving self is fundamental. If we cannot show Love and Compassion toward ourselves, how can we truly feel Love and Compassion for one another? Christ’s greatest commandment was, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” [Matthew 22:37-39] Following that instruction, recognize the divinity in yourself and pour out Love to your Divine God Presence first. When we send Love to our Divine Presence, another person, or out into the Universe, it is multiplied and returned to us. You will be giving from your unlimited supply of Love! If you find that you are having difficulty coming from a place of Love, take a few moments to go within and do a heart meditation to generate and expand the feeling of Love. The vibration of Love can transform any heavy, negative feeling or experience. Infuse your life with that Love and use it to increase the vibration of your words, thoughts, feelings, and actions. You have the power to choose to bring the power of Love into your experience at any time. When you are faced with a situation and are not sure what to do, send Love to self, to the other person involved, and to the situation. As you begin each day, send Love ahead of you into your day. See all of your activities of the day enveloped in a sphere of Love. As you live each moment, pour out Love and blessings to yourself, the people around you, and the world, including Mother Earth, the elementals, and heavenly realms as you are guided or faced with challenges. Love opens the door to joy, peace, balance, harmony, acceptance, forgiveness, gentleness, kindness, empowerment, knowing self and, is the companion of Divine Will and Wisdom. Remember, you are infinitely loved at all times. Love never fails. “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is Love.” [1 Cor. 13:13]

the Importance of
Support in Healing BY STEPHANIE IRZYK, DOM
When it comes to healing, one very important factor is often overlooked–the role of a good support system. Over the years, I have noticed patients that have a strong support system (i.e. encouragement from family, friends, spouse, significant other) show a much higher success rate and heal much more quickly than patients that lack this support. To further illustrate this, babies born with a lack of affection and touch tend to develop at a much slower rate and have more health complications than those that are loved, nurtured and held. There is no doubt that a support system is an essential component to overcoming the toughest of times (i.e. illness). You may notice the people who seem to be sick the most are the same people who have the most emotional drama, stress and a negativity in their lives. Those who remain healthy are the people who have a positive attitude, a good career and surrounded themselves with friends and family that are happy and successful. I have seen patients who have a spouse or significant other that discourage them from seeking Chinese medical treatment because they do not understand it. Instead of embracing their decision and learning more, they remain ignorant or hold negative thoughts towards choosing non-conventional approaches to healing. These patients tend to become easily frustrated and discouraged, which hinders their healing and makes them more likely to shy away from treatment. On the other hand, I have seen amazing results from couples that come in together to receive treatment, encourage one another, and are eager to make positive changes to improve their health.

I recently had a patient call me desperately seeking help for an extremely debilitating illness. She expressed her frustration and dismay that even though she had faith that she could be healed through Chinese medicine, her family was completely unsupportive. They refused to drive her to her appointments, and told her that her sickness was all in her head. She told me that she felt all alone in her struggle, and because of this, her illness was becoming progressively worse. I have also worked with a few patients that, even though their illness had been successfully treated and they were free from symptoms, still kept coming back each week. These were the patients that had nobody to go home to, no one who treated them with compassion, and nobody to listen to them. The time they spent receiving treatment was the only time they felt that anybody truly cared. Surrounding yourself with optimistic people that encourage you to grow and thrive will undoubtedly make a positive impact on your health. No matter how strong we think we are, we all go through times when we just need a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, a helping hand, and warm embrace. A strong support system will not only enhance your recovery time during illness, but also increase your productivity and encourage you to achieve your goals. Kinesio Taping
HOW IT CAN SPEED INJURY HEALING
B Y A U T U M N S C H W A R T Z , L M T, C K T P Kinesio Taping is elastic, latex-free adhesive tape that weighs and feels (to the body) like skin, and lets the body know that it has support to start healing from an injury. Kinesio is good for all ages, from the workplace to dance class to any sport, from pain to recovery to reeducation of the body. Before I became certified in Kinesio Taping, I did some book study about it at home. This was before my husband's injury. One day, my husband was kicking the ball around in the house when he accidentally kicked the floor to ceiling bookshelf. He broke or fractured the bone beneath his second toe (metatarsal). You can’t do much for the small bones in your feet. His foot turned black and blue and began to swell. Instead of resorting to my Kinesio Taping book, I did the old school thing and got him a cold pack. By the next day, the swelling was worse and my husband was in a great deal of pain to walk. The message flashed in my head, “Get the Book!” I knew it couldn’t hurt any worse, so I started with the swelling, taping it with a certain Kinesio technique that will create space for the fluid to work its way out of the foot. The next day, the swelling had decreased by about 75%, plus the discoloration was moving out. As his bone healed, more Kinesio Taping techniques directed toward support and stability were called for. My husband had broken the small bones in his foot before, but they had never healed this quickly. The Kinesio Tape can last up to five days, but with his foot I changed it every two to three days to meet his recovery needs. As a massage therapist, I find that Kinesio Taping allows me the freedom to move with support and reduced pain. I wear it myself while I give massages, exercise, or even shower. For my clients, it’s like having the support of my hands for the next three to five days. All tapings are not the same because everyone has different and varied pain or different muscle/joint and/or ligament problems. Everyone’s body is different and finding the key to pain may take different modalities or one to multiple Kinesio Taping Methods. I’d much rather take my chances with massage and being taped than to cover my pain up with pharmaceutical drugs. Our focus and experience at that time initiated a process, setting us upon a path, aligning with our Souls intention for being alive at this amazing time on the Planet. This portal will stay open, into 2012, from now forward, and particularly each day at 11:11. Spending even a few moments at those times (as you are able to) will continue to open you to and strengthen your connection to this energy.” [from Elizabeth Jones at http://astrologyoflight.com] She suggests that at 11:11 p.m. to use “...the Yin Approach where you surrender to the energies present and are receptive and become a witness to this exchange. This can be a most mystical experience as you may sense or feel the energies actually move around, and perhaps even through, you. As you breathe in, hold your breath just a moment and surrender to the intake of the breath you just took, allowing the life force to penetrate and engulf you.” At 11 a.m., use the Yang Approach in which “... you are more dynamically involved, seeking to invite in and even direct the energies in some way. Here you are a co-creator with the energies present as they move between the Worlds of Spirit and Matter. As you breathe out, and before you inhale, state that you are a co-creator with the energies that are entering you upon your intake of air. Affirm that you are a vehicle for the fundamental creative power of the Universe.” [http://astologyoflight.com, 11-9-11] Work with the opportunities that are presented to us each day. Stay present. Don’t look back. The past is over. While the Sun moves through the earth sign of CAPRICORN (Dec.21-Jan.19), focus on creating practical and realistic routines and practices in your daily life that support the shift towards a more sustainable planet. With the Capricorn/Cancer Full Moon on January 9, contemplate what you wish to create for your most outrageous future. What do you envision for the future of humankind and our planet? Over the following weeks, notice what challenges arise distracting you from your higher focus. Clear out old patterns of thought that limit you from believing in an abundant, loving world for all. While the Sun moves through the air sign of AQUARIUS (Jan.20-Feb.18), connect with like-minded people and groups. Remember that the power to create change on a large scale comes from the collective. We set the foundation with our personal dreams and focus and then, when a significant number of people envision and believe in a similar outcome, a shift occurs. With the New Moon in Aquarius on January 23 consciously

rework, renew and enhance your focus on what you envision, asking that it unfold and become more and more concrete as the days pass. With the Full Moon in Aquarius/Leo on February 7, celebrate with others in some way that enhances your connection to the earth, the moon, the stars and all our relations. When we move into the sign of PISCES on February 19, expect your dreams and inner knowingness to be greatly enhanced by the watery Pisces energies. Utilize the affirmations for your Sun and Moon signs to assist you in negotiating these times. ARIES (March 19-April 19) Quickly take care of any challenges that may surface for you. Don’t put off or delay dealing with them. Acknowledge and confront what needs to be dealt with head on. Just do it and move on with your life! Examine your thought patterns and beliefs searching for any obstacles that may be preventing you from fulfilling your purpose or engaging fully in life. Examine, confront, and move on without letting doubts and questions sabotage you. You are a powerful manifestor. Believe in yourself. AFFIRMATION: Each day I easily and confidently step more and more completely onto my true path and into fuller enjoyment of life. I AM blessed. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Life has been busy and perhaps challenging for you for a while now. As we begin this New Year, take some time to rest and recuperate. As we move into the depths of winter, emulate nature, become quiet, go within. Yes, you must work and take care of your day-today business, but then allow yourself to hibernate in whatever way feels comfortable for you. Prepare for the Spring when renewed energy will once again surge through you. AFFIRMATION: Each day as I allow myself to attune to Nature, to the deep quiet of winter, my health, well-being and soul are being renewed. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Use both your intuition and your intellect to solve any problems or to get the answers you are seeking. Do the research so that you are aware of the facts, options and possibilities. Then, combining information with your inner knowingness, notice what insights are revealed to you. When your mind and heart are working harmoniously, problems seem to solve with ease and situations are negotiated with confidence. Seek to enhance your inner knowingness with knowledge as a way to aligning all aspects of your being. AFFIRMATION: I step forward into this New Year in power and confidence and fully aligned in body, mind and spirit. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Winter is a powerful time of year for you. As the full moon of your year (5,6,7 months after your birthday), it is a time to gain insight, guidance and clarity regarding what may need to be addressed in your life, beliefs or perceptions. It can be a challenging time. Utilize sound as a way to release tension, opening your heart and mind to receive—sing, chant, tone, play an instrument or listen to music that opens your heart. Allow the insights to come, but don’t push yourself to act quite yet. Allow time, perhaps a month or two, for assimilation on a deeper, soul level. You will know when the time is right to act upon the guidance you receive. AFFIRMATION: I allow the sounds vibrating within and around me to relax

C R E AT I N G O U R F U T U R E I N T H E N O W and align my body, mind and spirit. I am calm, relaxed and peaceful. I AM one with the energies of the Universe. LEO (July 23-Aug.22) Life can sometimes take a different turn than we expect, but remember that we are never given more than we can handle. Deal with whatever occurs head-on, tapping into your inner wisdom, your resources and your courage. You are a lot stronger and more resilient than you think! Recall past challenges and how you overcame them. Now get going and confidently take care of whatever comes up! You can do it! AFFIRMATION: I step forward in confidence and courage knowing that I have the resources and ability to deal with whatever life brings. I AM guided, supported and loved in every moment. VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) With these continually shifting and changing energies, it is essential to remain flexible, resilient and willing to shapeshift in order to negotiate varying situations or areas of your life. Tap into different aspects of yourself as a way to expand who you are. Practice different identities by changing your dress, habits, and actions. Learn how to modify your auric field. Change your hairstyle. Have fun with this and you will be able to more effectively and joyfully deal with whatever situation comes your way with greater confidence and ease. AFFIRMATION: I AM flexible, resilient and enjoy shifting and changing with each situation and person I encounter. Life is fun! LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.22) Use your creativity to solve problems or deal with any challenges. Think out of the box. Try approaching a situation from a different perspective. Thinking creatively is the key! When the Sun moves through the air sign Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18), you may find that you are able to more easily receive insights and awareness. As a Libra, you are also an air sign. Whenever the Sun moves through signs of your element—Gemini, Libra and Aquarius—there is an ease and familiarity with the energy facilitating understanding and awareness. Use the month of Aquarius to access the insights and guidance you need to negotiate life in a more open-ended, creative way. AFFIRMATION: I am open to all possibilities, options and ideas that assist me in moving forward with ease into this glorious new year. SCORPIO (Oct.23-Nov.21) This is a time to nurture your sense of compassion for both yourself and for others. Be there, listening and supporting friends and loved ones without trying to fix a situation or solve their problem. You have been through many challenges and transformations in your life so you understand what it is to be in a place of pain and suffering. Be a compassionate listener. If the stories you hear trigger your issues, have compassion for yourself. We all do what is necessary at the time. As we grow and learn, we gain healthier options to choose from that empower us along our journey. AFFIRMATION: I love and accept myself for all that I am, all that I have experienced and for the unique individual I am evolving into. I AM blessed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov.22-Dec.21) As you begin a new year initiated by your birthday, where do you need to make some shifts? Where do you need to adjust your focus in order to achieve what you desire to see unfold over the coming year? Are you standing in your truth? Observe. Are you making conscious choices or automatic decisions based on your past history or on someone else’s perceptions or expectations? Observe. Make your
choices and decisions based on your inner truth tapping into your power and authority as a sovereign being. Establish healthy boundaries, ask for what you want and step forward based on your own internal authority and autonomy. AFFIRMATION: I rejoice in who I am. I easily and comfortably move forward guided by my inner knowingness and inner truth. CAPRICORN (Dec.22-Jan.19) It is a time of transformation for you as you end one year and begin anew with your birthday. Shed the skin of the old, outmoded ways of believing, perceiving and doing that are no longer working in your life. When we do the same thing over and over and get the same unwanted results, then it is time for much needed change in either what we do or in how we are perceiving a situation. Perhaps a huge transformation from the core of your being is in order or perhaps simply a shift in perception. Let discomfort, annoyance, anger, irritation, suffering, and agonizing be your pointers that a change is in order. Remember, when we have the courage to let go of the old, something better is always waiting for us around the corner. AFFIRMATION: The past is over. I step forward into my new year open to exciting new changes that fill my heart and my life with joy. I AM blessed. AQUARIUS (Jan.21-Feb.18) Clean out the closets and engage in some self-examination as you prepare for a new year ahead initiated by your birthday. Where do you need to make some changes in your beliefs about yourself and your capabilities? Where are you out of integrity with yourself— continuing old patterns when you really believe otherwise? Observe yourself. Examine your thoughts. What is preventing you from stepping more fully and completely into your true work, onto your path, into the essence of who you truly are? Feel good about how far you have come, acknowledging your progress, but now is time to take stock and prepare to move forward leaving the doubts, limitations and worries behind. AFFIRMATION: I am clear. I am focused. I move forward in strength and confidence trusting that I am supported in all ways and in line with my highest good. PISCES (Feb.19-March 19) As you complete your personal year (a new one is initiated each year by your birthday), give yourself the time and space to go within for some undisturbed quiet time. Perhaps create a comfortable, nurturing space somewhere within your home that can be a place of solace for you. With the rapid pace of life and the intensity of the energies all around us, a place of quiet is essential. This is especially essential for you, Pisces, as you are so very aware of and sensitive to energy. Giving yourself the gift of silence, even for a few minutes a day, will enhance your ability to more effectively deal with the energies swirling around you, as well as nurture your intuition and your connection to spirit. You will begin to feel more peaceful and serene and more aligned with the essence of your true self. AFFIRMATION: My sacred space nurtures, calms and realigns my body, mind, spirit and emotions. Ahhhhh…I am peaceful, I am relaxed and I am grateful. How to Be Prosperous and Release a Nuclear Power Plant of Energy BY IRLIANNA SAMSARA I've been contemplating how we waste so much time on the planet with things that don’t matter -- and especially how judgments and opinions deprive us of our precious life force. I had a direct experience of this that I'll never forget. A few years ago, I woke up and thought about a guy I had dated months earlier. He was constantly hot and cold, and I had to move on. This had pained me at the time, since I had a deep soul memory of him the way I had never had with anyone else. I washed my hands of it all, and forgave him. Or so I thought. That morning I looked at the fact that I had forgiven him 99%. But there was still a little thread I was hanging on to. Well with forgiveness it's 100% or it's nothing. So I told myself, I release it all, whatever I've been hanging on to about him. About 40 minutes later the phone rang. It was him! We hadn't talked in months! He said he'd be in the neighborhood and would like to stop by. The act of forgiveness was immediately felt by him and I knew it. As soon as he came over he sat me down and apologized for how he had treated me in the relationship. It was mind-blowing. We look to other people and their stuff, and make them wrong... but really, it's WE who block life by hanging on to judgment! In this space of no-thing we ate lunch and gardened together ... free from the past ... purely in the Now. It was a glorious day. The next day I received a check for about $800. It was not a check I was expecting. Clearly when we forgive, all manner of Divine Grace can enter our lives. I got present to how people spend tons of money and time going to Prosperity workshops to 'learn' how to be prosperous... they've got it all wrong! Prosperity is a HEART trip, not a head trip! You want to be prosperous? Give up those judgments you have about the people in your life! Stop feeding your precious life force energy to the invisible Judgment Monster. Release your life force to life. Release = real ease. If you can't find it in yourself to forgive someone, call them. Let them know you've been judging them. Be real. Tell the truth. It's about YOU, not them. You will gain what really matters -- a mastery of self that will astound you and open up the space for miracles to occur. tions from sources of ancient wisdom. So we might wonder what’s happening here with these apparently contradictory forecasts. The Vedic literatures from ancient India describe the current time as an “age of quarrel and hypocrisy,” called the Kali-yuga, the most degraded period in the universal cycle of four ages. Also the Vedas, as communicated through personalities such as Sri Caitanya, a 16th century sage from West Bengal, describe that within the eons that comprise the Age of Kali there will be a Golden Age of Enlightenment. We stand at the dawn of this age of auspiciousness, while simultaneously Kali-yuga is in full force. The raging river of Kali-yuga wreaks havoc, while the golden age is an eddy in the current. We might imagine that Kali-yuga is an ever-increasingly ferocious storm and the movement towards spiritual awareness is an ever-expanding umbrella. These epochal influences are present. Our choice is the extent to which we take shelter in the umbrella, and contribute to its expansion. Prophesized disasters or visions of heaven on earth represent possibilities, not fixed fate. By cultivation of conscious living we can augment the eddy, and dissipate the destructive forces of Kali-yuga.

client rec e n t l y shared with me about horrendous mistreatment she suffered when she was a small child, at the hands of her own family members. This sort of story is, unfortunately, not unusual for me to hear, as I regularly counsel, coach, and facilitate groups of adults who were neglected and abused as children. Individually and societally we increasingly experience and hear about catastrophes and traumas resulting from human iniquity, economic collapse, and natural disasters. Clearly we are spiraling downward towards darkness and calamity. For some, this is no surprise as the prophecies of ancient traditions confirm just what we are witnessing. Yesterday, a client shared about a momentous spiritual breakthrough, internally, in his relationships with people dear to him and with the Divine. This type of realization I also find to be an increasingly common occurrence as more and more people sincerely apply themselves to genuine processes of consciousness-raising, auspicious personal transformation and social upliftment. This, too, is consistent with predic-

We get to nurture golden age consciousness at each moment, through our responses to external events. How quickly, for example, do we realize opportunities for growth, awareness-raising, and deepening connections, when encountering apparently cataclysmic crises? To what extent do we react automatically from past conditioning, and to what extent do we respond consciously from a platform of true and transcendent spiritual consciousness? To focus on our inner state of being does not supplant endeavors for change at the macro level. Still, whatever political, economic or cultural systems are in place, their value and effectiveness will be determined by the consciousness of the members who energize the systems. Thus, while recognizing historical movements that influence the age, let us live in the present and create the future through finding our shelter in the eddy in the current. David B. we drove home from my sweetheart’s birthday celebration, I was recounting the wonderful things that transpired during my day. We had spent most of the day apart, with me at a full-day speaking engagement, then participating in a webinar earlier that evening. My day had been filled with an extraordinary amount good energy, and I was effusive.
As
“I’ve always known your greatness was inevitable.” Greg’s words stopped me short. It wasn’t just the words; they carried an energy that was unmistakable. Sometimes people unknowingly channel the purest essence of the Divine. There was more to this than my sweetheart’s opinion of me. Days later, I was still mulling the greater implications when I called my coach for our appointment. One of the aspects I love about coaching is the unfettered opportunity to celebrate successes! Naturally, I brought up my wonderful day and Greg’s comment. I had savored the essence of the message for myself, and then opened my awareness to the greatness in every soul. Yes, I do believe greatness is inevitable for all of us. “Oh,” my coach fed back to me, “certainly greatness is in-

is inevitable evitable for every human being. It’s part of being Source. The difference is that yours is imminent.” Again, the energy was palpable–another Divine message of truth. So, that was the complete message. Yes, our greatness is inevitable. It is simply a matter of when we will step into it. I remember the first time I clearly saw what the future holds for me. There was a stage in a huge arena or auditorium, and I was watching myself speaking to a crowd of people who were cheering. I love public speaking, but I’ve never addressed an audience so large. I remember feeling like a child who was playing dress-up; it would take forever to grow into that role. I had a million questions, the first one being, “Who am I to think I could inspire that many people?” From this side of the experience, it didn’t take as long as my inner child thought it would. Yes, my greatness is inevitable, and it is imminent, too. Some days I feel like a gangly teenager who is big enough for the clothes, but not quite comfortable in them. The comfort is growing. Now, when my ego inquires, “Who am I to…?” I clearly hear the Divine response, “Who are you not to?”
My greatness is inevitable. Your greatness is inevitable, too. We all come from the same Source, and I am made of nothing more spectacular than you are. We are each made of some pretty miraculous stuff! Sure, the ego may argue. Whatever your ego says, I invite you to check into your heart space, your Highest Self, your Divine Connection. Notice the resonance when you take in the words, Your Greatness is Inevitable. Only you can decide when you’re ready for what is inevitable. Resiliency in a time of change
B Y R E V. A N D R E W C E K U N Change confronts us all in every department of human living. These are difficult times where me must accept hard truths. Economic, environmental, lifestyle, and Earth Changes are before us now. How best to prepare for such changes? Resilience must be developed if we are to physically survive, cope and adapt to the many changes, spiritually evolve, and continue to render service. It is spiritual resilience that I will address now. I wish to make some very personal observations from my own life experience.

In my own life, my suffering was mostly self-created by difficult emotions and erroneous thinking. It was the result of wrong identification. As long as I continued to identify myself as a human being, with my physical body, desires, emotions, and thoughts, I was doomed to suffer, fail, and never grow personally or spiritually. When I began identifying as a Soul, everything changed and transformed, almost miraculously. I am a spiritual being having a human experience! In your spiritual practice, try the following dis-identification exercise: “I AM the SOUL! I have a physical body, but I am not my body. I have emotions, feelings, and desires, but I am not my emotions. I have thoughts and beliefs, but I am not my thoughts. I AM the SOUL! My goal is to integrate my body, emotions, and mind with my Soul.”

beginning of every meditation or session of spiritual practice with the Mantram of the Soul: “I am the Soul, I am the Light Divine. I am Love. I am Will. I am fixed design.”
[Fixed design is NOT fate! It is your spiritual destiny, determined by the Soul, and involving your Free Will choices]. I do this Soul Mantram daily, and have used it with incredible success!

almost miraculously.
I suffered with clinical depression (confirmed by a diagnosed chemical imbalance in my brain) most of my life. The Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul defines depression as an “unwholesome preoccupation with frustrated personality desires.” So true! When I focused upon what I did not have that I desired (as a personality), I became depressed. Interestingly, my chemical imbalance remains, but my depression went away when I became Soul conscious, and achieved higher/expanded consciousness. Spiritual resilience is an act of the Will. It follows the cultivation and expression of intelligence and Love. Some suggestions for developing the Will:
1. Accept that we live on God’s terms, not our own. Ask for God’s Will, Plan, and Purpose to be revealed to you–and believe Divine Will always prevails. 2. Welcome obstacles, for Master Morya tells us the presence of severe challenge in life has for its purpose the strengthening of the Will. 3. According to Master Djwhal Khul, joy occurs when alignment with the personality and soul takes place. Joy is of the Soul and operates independently of personal circumstances. 4. Practice detachment! Our attachments (belief systems, comforts, desires, habits, or material possessions) are our greatest obstacle to becoming resilient.

Technology Fast: Give It Up Just One Day a Week BY DIANE J. ACKERMAN
Technology–our new terrorist! While Gene Roddenberry was arguably far ahead of his time, I think even Gene would be appalled at the powerful allure of today's technology most especially with our youth. Few teens are able to handle eye to eye contact let alone an actual conversation with a living being in the same room. If they’re not iPod-ing, Facebook-ing, Twittering, smart phoning, texting or using a computer with lightening speed, they're lost! What have we done to ourselves? Yes, one can debate that men like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg have changed the face of communication as we once knew it, but at what cost? Unfortunately, not everyone is Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. The average child, I’m sad to say, will barely make it out of high school. Securing a decent job would be a feat in itself. Forget a career
with a solid future. I’m not even talking about white collar aristocrats. Today, we find ourselves hard put to fill entry level positions at Walmart. The legislators for the U. S. Department of Education are, for the most part, out for the buck. Be damned the future of children. After all, they can communicate with the touch of a finger. In fact, they don’t even have to write, or spell or calculate. The tech machines will do these tasks for them. This is no longer science fiction. Technology has become an addiction as bad as cocaine. Research led by the University of Maryland has shown that, "The extensive use of various types of technology and media is changing us." Participants described feeling fidgety and kept reaching for their cell phones even when they weren’t there.” What is amazing is how dependent people are on their technology. People seldom own watches or alarm clocks because they rely on their cell phones to wake them up. Most participants in the study struggled without their cell phones and felt disconnected without Facebook. Abstinence from music caused the most difficulty, according to Dr. Gerodimos. At first, many found the silence quite uncomfortable and awkward. However, as they got used to it they began to notice more things around them like birds singing and the scents of nature. As people in the research study developed coping mechanisms, they went for walks and visited friends rather than sit in front of a computer. Amazed to admit that they were experiencing symptoms of withdrawal, they likened it to going into a diet, or giving up smoking cold turkey. The word addiction kept recurring. Perhaps everyone should try to give up using technology for one day a week. It might help us get in touch with our families and friends. Jobs would be created with a reemergence of board games, calligraphy or the reading of books. Why, we may even discover the color of our children’s eyes. Rather then texting in a new language, we may discover the beauty of the language we already have. Just a thought! Diane is author of The Gathering, a book of poems addressing life’s addictions, co-dependencies and obsessions. Her workbook on anger management, Shut the Duck Up, has been used with great success at The Anthony House, a homeless shelter formerly housed in Zellwood, Florida. Please see ad this page.

There
was a time when I had fulfilled the American Dream. I lived in a beautiful, ten room Eastlake Victorian mansion. I had a fabulous job that paid well, a shiny new car, and a closet stuffed with designer clothes, however deep inside of me I felt like I was dying. I simply couldn’t figure out why I was not happy. Achieving all this stuff was what the experts told me mattered most in life. I was indoctrinated to believe that you needed to go to college, secure a high paying job, marry the right person, have two children, and live in an affluent neighborhood. Doing all these things, one would find total bliss. It didn’t happen. In despair, I decided to take the opposite viewpoint. I gave up everything–the big house and the affluent lifestyle. I moved to the Navajo Reservation where I found myself living the simple life. I still had plenty of goodies in life to enjoy, however those around me lived in abject poverty. Most people didn’t have running water, indoor plumbing, or central heating. There wasn’t enough food, money, or adequate housing. What I did find in this unique environment was that the people had a deep tie to the sacred, a tie to the land, and a love for one another through their clan system. Today in our modern world we are facing a crisis. Many people are losing their jobs, homes are in foreclosure, and family structures are falling apart under the stress of trying to maintain a former lifestyle that has crumbled. With the crisis comes the question that we must now ask ourselves. What REALLY matters in life? The answer to the question is that we must begin to have a deeper tie to the sacred, a deeper tie to the land that sustains us, and a return to love. Sacred literature tells us that God is love. When we focus on love and allow
ourselves to be an open vessel through which God can express itself, our lives become sacred and we then can come from a space of divine love. When we talk about love, it is not something we can use and then take back when we are finished with someone. Love is a divine activity. It is a cosmic force. It is a spiritual gift.
Wake-Up Call! Time to Return to the
Loving others is impossible until we love ourselves. Until we love ourselves, we feel unworthy. When we feel unworthy we are not able to express divine love. The inability to express divine love is a common cause of many of our social problems. We have learned to love our houses, our cars, our clothes. These things cannot love us back. Through loving things we have misplaced our sacredness and placed it upon the outer forms in the world.

Life is about choices. We can embrace our daily lives or daily teachings. On the other hand, we can go through them kicking and screaming. The latter does not work well. It is better to f-l-o-w. Yes, we want to share our truth and let others know what is important to us. When we become an observer, we witness the life we are living which may help us to grow more conscious. It helps us to understand others and ourselves. We can choose to be like a willow tree rather than an oak tree. Willow branches bend when a strong wind moves them. An oak tree branch breaks. This metaphor reminds us to be flexible and adaptable in each experience.

We can choose the highest thought. When we allow someone or something to bother us, we can change our thoughts. When we shift from low frequency thinking to higher frequency thinking, it raises us above the experience. There are times when we want “to feel… to heal.” Sometimes, while we are experiencing our humanness, we may become locked in a temporary mindset. Negative thinking can create a loop of the same thoughts and feelings that can spiral us downward. Let’s take a breath, stand back from the situation for a moment, and ask, “What is a higher thought?” That is the life preserver. I recall one summer when my husband Eugene and I went rafting down the Esopus River in the Catskill Mountains. It had

rained heavily the previous night. It was a sunny day and we floated down the river for more than an hour. At one point, I floated down the center over a small waterfall. BAM! I found myself struggling for my life! The heavy rains created a waterfall and a whirlpool. When I came up to the water’s surface, I was forced down again and again and again. Panic set in and I started to remember other major struggles in my life. Each time I popped up to the surface, it felt like the river was laughing at me and pushing me under. The river was winning. I felt powerless. My life flashed before me. It would be easy to give up since I was not winning this battle. Fear evolved into anger. “No, I am not ready to give up. I want to LIVE, damn it!” I mustered all the strength in my body as I went to the surface of the water one last time. There was my raft on the edge of the whirlpool. I reached out and grabbed it for dear life and I pushed myself back into the river’s stream. Another whirlpool caught me but my body pushed forward. How did I save my own life? I became the rescuer. My Higher Self helped my Inner Child. Most importantly, I CHOSE to be here. I CHOSE to stay.

The Yoga of R e l at i o n s h i p BY YOGI AMRIT DESAI A relationship is like a mirror. It reflects everything we have been avoiding. It has the power to reveal our divine potential as well as the darkest recesses of our shadow side. Loving, intimate relationship has a tendency to stir up all our old hurts, traumas, insecurities, fears, and control issues. Sooner or later, we must recognize and embrace the parts of ourselves and our loved ones that we’ve been avoiding, suppressing and denying. When we use a loving relationship as a mirror to see who we truly are and what we have been hiding from, we enter the process of Self-discovery that moves us toward internal integration. This promotes healing and release of all the blocks that separate us from our higher Self as well as from our loved ones. This is the part of a relationship that provides us with an opportunity to discover our true Self; this is the yoga of relationship. Only a relationship that is founded primarily on the intention to see yourself with greater objectivity and unbiased awareness will truly become an experience of Self-discovery, unity, and ecstasy of love. To be in relationship with another is really about being in relationship with yourself. Every obstacle you encounter in love that appears to be coming from the other is actually a reflection of what you unconsciously harbor within. If you do not face all these obstacles with integrative awareness, the integrative power of true love will turn into fear and resistance. It is the presence of mindful awareness that helps you overcome the obstacles of the separative ego that keep you from experiencing the unity of love.
In the truly loving relationship, the process of Self-discovery progressively allows us to become free of ego-centered, separative walls and promotes deeper levels of divine love. This is exactly the purpose of yoga practice: to transcend the separative ego-sense, so that the individual self merges into the cosmic Self-God. In the Self-discovery process, either through yoga practice or a loving relationship, you encounter all that you have been trying to avoid in yourself. This is at the core of the yoga of relationship. Whether you want to experience the fulfillment of the urge to merge through the medium of yoga or an external relationship, you must be com-
mitted to facing the obstacles that create conflict and division in your life, whether with loved ones or within yourself. Relationship with others, particularly those we are closest to, is the fieldwork for spirituality. Spiritual practice does not belong just on the yoga mat or a meditation cushion. It must permeate every aspect of our lives, extend into every one of our experiences, from the mundane to the mystical. Remember that the only real difference between relationship and yoga is that the ecstasy we experience in external love is temporary, while the ecstasy and union of yoga is a permanent and profound
transformative process. The first affects only a part of your life; the second impacts the whole of your life. If your loving relationship is based on an intention for Self-discovery, it is the basis of spiritual love. We can use our loving relationship as the foundation to explore, expand and experience the divine potential that leads to union–the ultimate experience of yoga. Autism & Acutonics® BY E L I Z A B E T H S T E WA R T
This is the story of my son Ben and me. My little boy, with his early diagnosis of moderately severe autism, provided the fuel to propel my life in an entirely new direction, one of pursuing the practice of Oriental Medicine and the Acutonics System of Sound Healing. Ben’s early story will sound sadly familiar to many autistic parents. My baby was born April 13, 1998 and his first year and a half of life were normal by all accounts. Yes, he received his childhood vaccines. No, he did not immediately manifest changes, and I cannot swear he was not beginning to show signs even before he received the multiple-loaded vaccination. The fact is that at age three he was not the child his early years had promised. Ben was banging his head on nearby walls. He would stare at the ceiling fans for hours. He would not give me or anyone else eye contact and would throw himself on the floor with tantrums 10-15 times a day. His pediatrician referred us to a well-respected child psychiatrist who immediately diagnosed Ben with autism. Good medical insurance and lots of community contacts provided us with early intervention. He received almost daily therapy: speech therapy, sensory integration, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Here is where Ben’s story takes a different turn. I went on the warpath to find more help, different help, progressive and unproven and uncertain help, and thankfully, I found Acutonics. I signed up for the very next class I could get into and came home after that three-day workshop and immediately began holding the forks to Ben’s ears and placing them on his body.

I began as I had been taught, with Ohm on traditional grounding points on his feet (Kidney 3 and Spleen 3), and to my shock I received NO RESPONSE. What I am saying is that the tuning forks stopped vibrating almost immediately when I touched them to Ben’s feet. Normally the instruments will continue to vibrate for 10 to 15 seconds and the practitioner can feel a pulse moving through the forks and points. I was uncertain what to do as this “no response” had not been covered in class. I followed my instinct because it was all I had and I picked up the Zodiac 3rd interval, the harmonic of deep and expansive dispersion. This was the exact combination that we had been warned NOT to use on the Kidney meridian because it could disperse valuable jing. My thought was to use it to drill holes, to create grounding points in my child’s feet. And to my amazement, it worked! The forks jumped and popped. The sound almost crackled. I continued for about ten activations until the energy flow was smooth and then drifted back to the traditional protocol. Ben’s energy began responding more typically as I grounded him with the Middle Ohm forks. This was Ben’s first Acutonics session. He was sound asleep and I was exhausted. The next morning my son made eye contact with me for the first time in ten months and I was crying. The next evening, I continued with the training I had received and started opening the Eight Ext r a o rd i n a r y Vessels. The protocol was simple and straightPhoto above is not Elizabeth Stewart and son forward. I opened two different vessels each bedtime and after all eight were opened, I began again with different harmonic combinations. This became our bedtime routine and we continued every night for the next two years. Ben’s response was unbelievable: His tantrums reduced almost immediately and ended after about six months. His rocking and head-banging began reducing in frequency after about the first four to five treatments…right about the time all Eight Extraordinary Vessels had been opened up. And his speech patterns changed from one-word shouts to complex sentences, after two months into our sessions. Here I must give a reminding caveat. This is a personal and individual case study of my work with my son and Acutonics. Acu-

tonics was just one of many therapies Ben was undergoing to address his autistic condition and there is no way of knowing what, if anything, Acutonics contributed to his recovery. That being said, today Ben’s doctors no longer consider the diagnosis of autism relevant and claim he was misdiagnosed. Today, at age 13, his current western diagnosis is ‘very mild Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. Ben is brilliant, mainstreamed in most of his middle school classes and is doing very well in all-gifted classes. His interpersonal skills are awkward yet he is a delightful and engaging individual who can start and hold a conversation with peers and adults alike. He can exhibit empathy and concern and is very loving.
What is Acutonics®? “It is a series of transformational tools for transitional times.”
[Donna Carey, Founder of the Acutonics System of Sound Healing]
The Acutonics System of Sound Healing is an energy-based non-invasive treatment that is similar to acupuncture yet can be easily incorporated into a massage therapy practice as well as expand the patient population for an acupuncture practice. Precision calibrated tuning forks are applied to specific acupuncture points to access the body’s Meridian and Chakra energy systems. These tuning forks represent a natural harmonic series based on the orbital properties of the Earth, Moon, Sun and planets. Their rich resonance and vibration connects with and supports the body’s natural frequencies. It brings us into alignment with the cycles of the cosmos known since antiquity as the Music of the Spheres. All classes receive continuing education credits for massage therapists and acupuncturists.
Original Medicine: Love Made Manifest BY SUNEMAURA O’BRIEN I love the Native American concept of “original medicine.” Original medicine is the unique quality that each of us has brought to the Earth and her peoples. This original medicine is our own special way of serving, our own special way of bringing well-being to the planet and her creatures. It is more than just our purpose in life. It is the way we express our relationships to Nature, to Humanity, to Creator. It is the way in which the Love which created us manifests itself in matter. All of us carry with us original medicine. Recognizing it and expressing it is vital to a happy and peaceful life. We often get so caught up in wanting to discover a grand purpose for our lives that we forget to look inside ourselves to appreciate the gentle gifts we bring to ourselves and the people around us. For a long time, I wondered about my purpose in life. I constantly asked, “Why am I here?” I searched for the perfect job, thinking a career that “mattered” would make real my right to be on the planet. Over the years, I have found work that is meaningful and fulfilling, however after all of the searching, I have found that my work is just an offshoot of who I am. It does not define me or have anything to do with the gift I am to the Earth. I have been told that all of us have the same purpose in life and that is to express Creator’s love to the Earth and all of us who live with her. Our medicine is the lovely way each of us not only expresses, but becomes that love. Rev. Many people are rediscovering the ancient method of using sound as a healing tool. One such technique, The Sound Prescription,® a therapy for stress, pain and healing, is receiving a lot of attention lately due to its ability to heal through the use of musical vibrations. In The Sound Prescription, as practiced by harpist and Sound Script Therapist, Melody Anglin, the feet of the client are placed on the sound board of the harp. Together they establish the client’s Frequency Key,™ then Melody plays an original composition around the fundamental and overtones of the Frequency Key. The vibrations travel through the bone, muscle and water in the body sweeping stress and pain out as it passes. Recently, The Sound Prescription was put to the test when three retired Chiropractors who were also kinesiologists asked to see and experience it. Upon Melody’s arrival, the kinesiologists were testing each other to locate body weaknesses to know them in advance of the vibration therapy they were about to receive. They planned to retest after the vibration therapy to measure the effectiveness, if any, of the vibrations to correct the weaknesses. On this particular day, the doctors had not found body weakness with their present test combinations (there are many combinations of measurement and they had not tried the correct one yet). Melody suggested to let the frequency find the body’s need. The kinesiologists were skeptical, but they agreed. The frequency did find the body’s area needing repair on each of the participants. The untreated area was measured by applied kinesiology testing to confirm or disprove the body’s coordinates for repair as found by the frequency. Then each doctor received, The Sound Prescription. Afterwards, the areas of weakness were measured again with applied kinesiology in each case finding a successful adjustment had taken place under musical vibration and with no physical manipulation. Melody is a renowned harpist voted First Place Winner of the WESH Channel 2 News "Best Music in Central Florida 2008." She is is seasoned concert harpist, wedding harpist, therapeutic harpist and soprano. Melody holds a Therapeutic Harp Practitioner certificate from the International Harp Therapy Program (England and San Diego) and is a Sound Script Therapist for Harmonious Life and Health Institute doing research in the area of sound and health. “Peace Begins With People” Says Broadcast by Local Volunteers BY JENNY REBECCA HILL Hoping to share a unique message, area volunteers take time each week to help produce an award-winning cable show entitled “Words of Peace.” In Gainesville, it airs on Cox Cable Channel 21 each Sunday at 7:00 p.m., Thursdays and Sundays at 1:30 a.m., Saturdays at 1:00 a.m., and in Ocala, Sundays at 7:00 p.m. Launched in October 2003, the weekly program features Prem Rawat, known internationally as Maharaji, who speaks about a peace that is within and how to get in touch with it. "It's not the world that needs peace. It's people who need it,” Prem Rawat says. “The thirst for peace is innate in every human being on earth." “Words of Peace” is watched worldwide and is translated into 70 languages. A two-time recipient of the Brazilian Association of Community Television Channels' highest award, the series is made available for local broadcast and promoted by local residents. One such resident is 59-year old Janet Rucker, an acupuncture physician who donates her time. She says “Words of Peace” offers viewers an opportunity to learn about something dependable, even in uncertain times. Says Rucker, "Watching the program ‘Words of Peace’ is like feeling calm in the midst of a storm. The wisdom and understanding I gain from each weekly episode definitely helps me through the week.” Prem Rawat began addressing audiences more than forty years ago as a young boy in India. To date, millions in cities and countries worldwide have heard him in person, including appearances at such notable venues as New York City’s Lincoln Center and the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. Currently, over 25 million viewers in the United States receive “Words of Peace” over their local cable access networks due to the efforts of community volunteers. Medications Impacting or Changing Thyroid Physiology
(Still having thyroid symptoms when your lab tests are normal?) BY DR. MICHAEL J. BADANEK DC, BS, CNS, DACBN, DCBCN, DM During my thirty plus years of clinical practice, I have personally noted an increased prevalence of thyroid conditions affecting my patients. With a noted increase of patients self-medicating with over the counter substances and prescriptive medications from their physicians, there is a correlation of increased thyroid conditions. We will be briefly discussing certain medications and how they may interfere with Thyroid Physiology. Many commonly prescribed medications have adverse impacts on thyroid physiology. The clinician must become familiar with these drugs when examining patient profiles. Many times, the drug thyroid interaction is the cause of symptoms. Surk M. Sievert R. “Drugs and Thyroid Function. Ethionamide: Trecator-SC tablets Ketoconazole: Nizoral tablets, Ketoconazole tablets Para-aminosalicylic acid: Paser granules Sulfonamide drugs: Bactrim Tablets, Septra tablets Rifampin: Rifadin capsules, Rifater
These antibiotic drugs have been suggested to potentially impact the absorption of thyroxine as well as potentially have an anti-thyroid effect by decreasing thyroid gland hormone synthesis and secretion. This would reflect on a thyroid panel as a pattern consistent with hypothyroidism as defined by an elevated TSH with low or normal T4 and T3 levels. Anti-inflammatory agents • Glucocorticoids: Celestone, Decadron, Depo-Medrol, Hydrocortisone tablets, Solu-Medrol sterile powder • Aspirin: Darvon compound, Ecotrin Enteric aspirin, Excedrin, Fiorinal Halfprin tablets, Norgesic tablets, Percodan tablets, Robaxisal tablets, Soma compound, Fiortal capsules, Gelpirin tablets, Propoxyphene compound, Roxiprin tablets These anti-inflammatory medications have been shown to suppress TSH release leading to decreased thyroid gland activation. This would reflect as TSH below the functional range, but in the low end of normal laboratory range with potentially depressed T4 and/or T3. Hyperthyroid Medications • Propylthiouracil: Propylthiouracil tablets • Methimazole: Tapazole tablets, Methimazole tablets These hyperthyroid medications inhibit the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, which normally acts in thyroid hormone synthesis to add iodide to the tyrosine residues on the hormone precursor thyroglobulin, thus forming thyroxine. Growth hormone modulating agents • Octreotide: Sandostatin These growth hormone-modulating agents suppress TSH release. They are typically used with acromegaly and TSH-secreting tumors.

Anti-nausea medications • Metoclopramide: Reglan, Metoclopramide Tablets TSH secretion is controlled by the stimulatory action of hypothalamic TRH and the inhibition via central dopaminergic and somatostatinergic mechanism as well as by a hypothalamic inhibitory action of thyroid hormones. Metoclopramide is a dopamine (DA2) receptor blockade that can accelerate to elevate the concentration of serum TSH in hypothyroidism, which is accompanied by a progressive loss of dopaminergic tone as demonstrated by a progressive increase in prolactin serum levels.
Anti-addiction agents • Methadone: Dolophine Hydrochloride tablets, Methadone HCL powder, Methadone dispersible tablets, Methadone oral tablets
Diabetic medications • Tolbutamide Orinase • Chlorpropamide: Diabinese
These anti-addiction drugs alter T4 and T3 transport in serum by increasing TBG concentrations. This would reflect as a thyroid panel with depressed T3 uptake and variations between total and free T4 and T3 levels.
These diabetic medications have anti-thyroid effect after prolonged therapy by causing a defect in the organic binding of iodine. The effects of this would present as a hypothyroid pattern of elevated TSH on lab tests. They also block binding of T4 to the carrier proteins and thus depress T4 concentrations.

"...Affecting Thyroid Physiology" cntinued from page 73 • Diuretics • Furosemide: Lasix, Furosemide tablets These diuretic medications are inhibitors of thyroid hormone binding in serum and high-dose treatment can lower total thyroxine and increase its free fraction. Stimulants Amphetamine: Adderall tablets These stimulant medications increase the sensitivity of thyroid receptors to thyroid hormones and potentially increase the release of TSH. These reactions may be seen as increased TSH and T4, or the lab test may not demonstrate any change despite symptoms of increased metabolic activity due to the drugs influence on thyroid receptors directly. Cholesterol lowering medications • Clofibrate: Atromid-S capsules • Cholestyramine; LoCholest powder, Questran Light, Prevalite • Colestipol; Colestid tablets These cholesterol lowering medications decrease the absorption of T4 by disrupting enterohepatic circulation of bile acids by sequestering them and preventing their reabsorption from the gut. The effects of these drugs may demonstrate unchanging laboratory TSH and hypothyroid symptomology despite thyroid hormone replacement.
Anabolic Steroids: Anadrol-50 tablets, Oxandrin tablets, Winstrol tablets
These anabolic medications decrease the production of thyroid –binding globulin and increase the percentage of free-fraction hormones. They will present on laboratory testing as increased T3 uptake, increased free T4 and/or T3, with normal protein-bound levels of T4, normal protein-bound levels of T3 and normal TSH. •
Androgens; Androgen Transdermal System, Testoderm Transderaml Systems
These anabolic medications decrease the productions of thyroid-binding globulin and increase the percentage of free-fraction hormones. They will present on laboratory testing as increased T3 uptake, increased free T4 and/or T3, with normal protein-bound levels of T4, normal protein-bound levels of T3 and normal TSH. •
Growth Hormones: Geref for injections, Humatrope, Nutropin, Protropin, Saizen for injection
These growth hormone medications may promote the production of TSH, T4 and T3 levels. Pain medication • Morphine
Arrhythmia medications • Amiodarone: Cordarone tablets, Pacerone tablets • Propranolol: Inderal tablets, Propranolol HCL tablets • Phentolamine: Regitine vials
These pain medications increase the production of thyroid-binding globulin and decrease the percentage of free-fraction hormones. They will present on laboratory testing as decreased T3 uptake, decreased free T4 and/ or T3, with normal protein-bound levels of T4, normal protein-bound levels of T3 and normal TSH.
These arrhythmia medications decrease the conversion of T4 into T3 hormones by decreasing the activity of the enzyme 5’ deiodinase. These medications may cause a pattern of depressed T3 with normal T4 and TSH.
Anti-Acid • Aluminum hydroxide; Amphojel, Maalox, Mylanta, Alu-Cap capsules, Alumina, and magnesia oral suspension
Hormone replacement • Estrogens: Estinyl tablets, Estrace vaginal cream, Estratab tablets, Menest tablets, Ogen tablets, Premarin tablets, Vagifem tablets
These anti-acid medications decrease the absorption of T4, The effects of these drugs may demonstrate unchanging laboratory TSH and hypothyroid symtomology despite thyroid hormone replacement.
These estrogen medications increase the production of thyroid-binding globulin and decrease the percentage of free-fraction hormones. They will present on laboratory testing as decreased T3 uptake, decreased free T4 and/or T3, with normal protein-bound levels of T4, normal protein-bound levels of T3 and normal TSH.
Psychoactive medications • Lithium (bipolar drug): Eskalith Capsules, Eskalith CR Controlled Release Tablets, Lithium Carbonate Capsules, Lithobid Slow-Release Tablets • These drugs potentially reduced thyroid gland secretion of thyroid hormones • Chlorpromazine (antipsychotic): Thorazine, Chlorpromazine HCL • These drugs potentially reduce TSH secretion • Halaperidol Haldol
•
Estrogen and Progestin Combinations: Activella tablets, Brevicon 28Day tablets, Demulen, Desogen tablets, Estrostep 21 tablets, Levora tablets, Ovral tablets, Micette tablets, Modicon tablets, Necon tablets, Ortho-Cyclen tablets, Ortho-Novum tablets, Ovcon tablets, Premphase tablets, Prempro tablets, Tri-Norinyl-28 tablets, Triphasil tablets, Trivora tablets, Zovia tablets

These medications decrease the secretion of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland. The laboratory presentation from these reactions would be identical to hypothyroidism as identified as depressed T4 and T3 levels with increased TSH. CONCLUSION It is very disturbing to see the many interactions of prescription and over the counter medications to thyroid physiology. It is no wonder why thyroid conditions effect 50-60,000,000 Americans today with the above
