Introducing Excalibur Dehydrators

The #1 Choice of Raw Food & Health Enthusiasts! • Dehydration is the healthiest and easiest way to preserve fruits, veggies, and more. • Economical - mere pennies a day to operate. • Dries food 10 times faster than ordinary dehydrators.

The Excalibur is EVERYTHING YOU NEED to make a never-ending supply of wholesome and healthy dried fruits, vegetables, and more!

Here are just a few ways an Excalibur Dehydrator can help you live a Healthy Lifestyle: • Speed up the marinating of vegetables (when cut properly and placed in a marinade bath, in a covered, glass, container for 1 - 2 hours, it will soften the vegetables and create a cooked texture and appearance, besides intensifying the flavors in the food). • Thicken sauces (placed in an open, glass container for 2 - 3 hours, it will reduce the liquid content, much like "reduction" in traditional cooking. • Warm food to above body temperature, so it is warming rather than cooling to the body, yet it maintains it's enzymatic integrity. • Slow "bake" sprouted breads. • Soften coconut oil gently. • Create (sprouted, seasoned) dehydrated travel snacks like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, tamari almonds and trail mixes. • Create crispy crunchy crackers and chips, also pie crusts, cookies, cakes, Make healthy & delicious snacks like Banana Nut Brittle brownies, granola bars, and more!

Dry your own super-healthy “living foods.”

2

“Living foods” are true health foods because they contain living enzymes. Excalibur’s adjustable heat lets you maintain temperatures high enough to preserve foods but low enough to keep enzymes viable. Excalibur's adjustable thermostat with exclusive Hyperwave™ fluctuation is specifically designed to maximize food quality, and drying efficiency while minimizing harmful enzyme damaging drying times.

“Excalibur is a product made perfect for the raw food community” Victoras Kulvinskas is a Co-Founder of the Hipocrates Health Institute with Ann Wigmore, and author of several books including “Survival into the 21st Century”. He is recognized as being the “Father” of the Raw food Movement.

I have been using and marketing Excalibur Dehydrators for over ten years. I have tested other units on the market and found Excalibur to be superior in service, performance, durability, price and quality. Excalibur is a product made perfect for the raw food community and others who are searching for high quality in their foods.

Walking Into Greater Enlightenment Dear Ones,

Marsha Sinetar writes: “Ever the optimist, I believe each of us can grow whole as persons. More optimistic still, I believe each of us can use our daily choices, even the most insignificant ones, to help us along this path.”—ELEGANT CHOICES, HEALING CHOICES Dr. Ernest Holmes wrote: “We are all in the process of an eternal evolution, destined to be ever more and never less our selves.” —IDEAS OF POWER, Holmes writings compiled by George Bendall These two enlightened individuals, Marsha Sinetar and Dr. Ernest Holmes, were born decades apart and yet the wisdom they tapped into is ageless–is the same. To me, each says that we become or evolve into more of our God Selves. Dr. Holmes writes that we are destined to be more and never less of our Selves. WOW! This is a power-filled concept. What I have discovered is that Truth Principles are recognized, written and practiced by all of us to some degree. I believe this to be so because we were all created equally by a Loving Essence– God—or whatever we choose to call IT. The attitudinal choices you and I make determine how–to what degree–we interact in our life experiences. Sometimes, these choices involve “faithing it until you make it!” If we are all destined to become more of our Selves and can enhance our lives by our choices, why wait to be healthier, happier, and more prosperous? I say let’s start now to release our old, unnecessary, outworn, and outgrown beliefs that no longer benefit us and replace them with life-enhancing beliefs. When you became a teenager, did you continue wearing the shoes you wore when you were two years old? :-) Our ‘old shoes’ were useful when we needed them and now that we have grown in spiritual awareness, we can enjoy new life experiences as we walk our spiritual path to greater enlightenment. In Love and Joy,

Dr. Cay Rev. Cay Thompson, D.D. has been a Science of Mind (SOM) Practitioner since 1962, a student of SOM since 1958, and became a Religious Science Minister in 1989. She served as a United Church of Religious Science (UCRS) Ecclesiastical Representative (Eastern/Mid-Western U.S.) from 1999-2002. She holds an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity. who completes you? "He completes me." "She's my better half." "I won't give up until I find my soulmate." These are remarks we often hear no matter what background any of us come from. There seems to be a drive within many of us to have that magic relationship, the one that lasts purely forever or the one that is so chock full of passion and excitement, even if it withers and dies, we look back on it wistfully. The old way was for men to go out and bring home the bacon and the women cooked it up in the frying pan, and I say this facetiously, metaphorically to make a point. The men went out to gather material sustenance for the family and the women tended to the nest at home, filling it with love and nurturing, making it the best respite possible for the hard working man to return home from an awfully hard day's work. The woman's day was awfully hard, too, however I'm not so sure they got enough credit for it. In many homes today, this formula is still followed, but as we all know, it is less and less followed as time and society 'advance.' Many men lavish the women in their lives with gifts and the women adore both the gifts and the men who decorated them with jewelry, clothes and cash. It's a cipher of giving and receiving. Each gives and each receives in different ways, at different times, but frequently much is expected in return for the gifts and when expectations are not met, resentment and withholding occurs. Some men give gifts only as long as sexual favors are extended. When the sex scene changes, the giving changes causing a woman to feel like something of a prostitute. I love to see men or women continue to so unconditionally love their partners who, due to depression so deep or sickness so serious, they can no longer function as a full partner in the relationship. Their struggling mates are so fortunate. I've seen and you've seen some women cater to their partners literally as an exchange for the goods. Some people accept this as an arrangement that works for them. They are having certain needs fulfilled which makes them feel safe and secure. And now we've come to the operative words: 'safe and secure,' because a great deal of what goes on between men and women is based on building feelings of safety and security for themselves. I was going to write 'within themselves' however that isn't necessarily true. All too often, the security that is sought after is external, fleeting security, not enduring internal security. What we are really looking for when searching for a soulmate or someone to love and share our life with is to profoundly experience our connection to the Divine. We think it's the lover we are

10

seeking and yes, the Divine uses people as the vessels to express Its love for us and sometimes we recognize this as truth. Ultimately though, we are seeking to satisfy a longing deep inside ourselves for union with our Creator. Our cells have memory of this exquisite union and from the moment we are born, we go looking for it. Having understood our rebirth into these human bodies as a separation from the Divine, we go looking for something that is already there, right within us. There is no connection to re-establish. The connection was never broken. We have only forgotten that it's right there, inside. We are blind to it until we realize our very selves. What we're really after is internal, not external. R e c e n t l y, I lost my dearest friend in the world. For years, I often ran to her with my problems and I also ran to her with my triumphs. She was my sounding board and my great support. Though I had learned to do this before, losing her forced me to get in the habit of going straight to the Divine in those moments. A pattern was broken and a new one formed, one I can now so deeply appreciate. Instead of going outside myself, I am going within to the Holy of Holies where the purest, most unconditional love, nurturing, caring, safety and support can be found. The next time you feel to run to someone for love or solace or wisdom or security, stop, get still and quiet and recognize that it's God you're really after. Try a new technique and reach out to the Divine and spend a good space of time doing it. Open your heart and feel the connection you have always thirsted for but existed in an overflowing chalice all the time, just waiting for you to drink.

The Natural Way Out of Diabetes by Tenanda Madhi Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the West. More than 20 million Americana have been diagnosed with either Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] or obsoletely, juvenile diabetes) or Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [NIDDM] or adult-onset diabetes, a metabolic disorder characterized by high Green Bean 'Fries' blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency). Many 1) Wash fresh, organic green beans and cut off the ends. 2) Drizzle with organic first cold pressed olive oil to coat. more are in the early stages of the disease.

Diabetes is a disease that affects the way the pancreas produces insulin in order to regulate blood sugar. Insulin helps sugar in the blood to get to the cells. If the body doesn't make enough insulin or it doesn't work properly, the sugar stays in our blood which over time, can damage blood vessels and nerves. The disease does not just mean you take a pill or an injection every day. It can also shorten your life by ten years, increasing your risk of heart attack, blindness, amputation and loss of kidney function. Diabetes has followed the trend of meaty, high fat, high calorie diets worldwide. In the United States alone, per capita meat consumption has increased over the last century from 150 pounds to over 200 pounds per year. Cheese intake has increased from less than four pounds to more than 32 pounds in the same period. Per capita intake of sugar, too, is up 30 pounds. These dietary trends contribute to acidic environments in the body for breeding disease as well as higher levels of body fat. Diabetes, heart disease and cancer follow. Persons with Type 1 diabetes are guided to take daily insulin injections for their entire lives. It does not have to be that way. Although modern medicine now recognizes and promotes the use of a balanced diet along with exercise to improve health, there are new studies and research which offer the compelling argument that a plant-based vegan diet, especially one comprised primarily of raw uncooked foods, can not only reverse the effects of Type 2 but can reduce dependence on insulin drugs and in many cases, eliminate the disease altogether, returning blood sugar levels to normal. The same can be accomplished with Type 1 although the challenge is greater. Raw vegans like myself believe cooking food above 118 degrees kills vital nutrients and enzymes that are essential to optimum health. A plant-based diet is a rich source of antioxidants, enzymes and nutrients like Vitamin C and E and beta-carotene, all of which protect our cells from damage by cancer-causing agents. This diet also contains phytochemicals known as indoles, isoflavones and polyphenols which help protect against diabetes and cancer. A 2009 sophisticated clinical study involved 99 participants with Type 2 in the D.C. area. Half the group was randomly assigned to follow a low fat vegan diet with no limits on calorie intake, carbs or portions. The other half consumed a diet following the ADA guidelines which involved calorie counting and portion control, allowing most foods including meat and dairy in limited amounts. The vegan group reduced their blood sugar, weight, body mass index, waist circumference and LDL (bad cholesterol) by twice

Hypnosis for Conception, Pregnancy and Birthing by Michelle Smith

It is a bit sad to me that so many people are frightened of hypnosis. There are numerous misconceptions, myths and untruths surrounding it. Sometimes when people hear what my vocation is, they will physically take a step back from me as if the next words out my mouth will render them helpless to my whims. (If that were possible, my children would automatically keep their rooms immaculate, wash the dishes, and clean the toilet.) In reality, hypnosis is a natural state everyone enters into and out of every day, and no one can ever be hypnotized against their will. Nor can they get stuck in hypnosis. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. And hypnosis has been proven to be one the most effective ways to create desired change in one’s life.

The benefits and applications of hypnosis are multifold. It is especially useful for conception, pregnancy, and birthing. Hypnosis enhances the mind-body connection, allowing the body to do such things as decrease stress, speed healing, increase a nursing mother’s milk supply, and alter the perception of pain. Hypnosis elicits the relaxation response–a physical state of deep rest that occurs when a person is profoundly relaxed. It counteracts the body’s physical and emotional response to stress, allowing it to return to a calm, relaxed state. This causes a measurable decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, muscle tension, and stress hormone levels. The relaxation response also causes normal waking brainwave patterns to shift to predominantly slower patterns, paving the way for the hormonal and immune systems to return to normal. This is especially vital while trying to conceive. When we experience stress, our bodies produce cortisol which can inhibit the implantation of a fertilized ovum, delay ovulation, and reduce the number and motility of sperm. High levels of stress tell the body, “Now is NOT the appropriate time to become pregnant.” For families using Assisted Reproductive Technology, studies have shown that including hypnosis during treatment can double their success rates. During pregnancy, eliciting the relaxation response benefits both mom and baby. The daily practice provides the means to utilize the relaxation response during labor. This deeply relaxed state enhances the release of endorphins, our own natural pain relievers which are 200 times stronger than morphine! Unfortunately, fear causes a release of catecholamines, “fight-or-flight” hormones, which interrupt the flow of birthing hormones and endorphins. Hypnosis is a powerful means of resolving fears and painful emotions. Releasing fears and limiting beliefs helps ensure they are not manifested during the birth experience. I am merely a facilitator. I am humbled when clients who have been working to become pregnant finally conceive. It is an honor to witness clients resolve a traumatic previous birth experience or become more peaceful about a pregnancy they have lost and to provide women effective tools for birthing and postpartum. When clients continue to use the skills I have taught them in their everyday lives, I have truly done my job. Michelle A. Smith, CHt, HBCE, CHCI, HBFC, CCA is a practicing staff member of the Hypnotic Research Society, Inc, and the founder/director of Birth Ease and The Birth Ease Method. For nearly a decade, Michelle has been assisting women, babies, and families through a sub-specialization in childbirth and fertility hypnosis. Her clinical expertise is enhanced in her years of experience as a Midwifery Birth Assistant, Doula, and as a Childbirth, Lactation, & Parent Educator. Michelle‚s dual knowledge base in both birth and hypnosis provides her clients with the distinct advantage of a well-trained, practicing clinical hypnotist, as well as the assurance of a professional birth attendant and educator who has assisted at hundreds of births.

THE YIN AND YANG OF PET OWNERS: Cat People and Dog People by Colleen Gordon, Healing for Pets Two opposing but complementary universal forces are found in all things–night and day, feminine and masculine, dark and light, downward and upward, earth and heaven, dog and cat. Instinctively, we have known that as animal owners we tend to fall into one group or the other. Our personalities reflect our preferences and some feel a strong alliance to one or the other with no middle ground. Yet these alliances are more complimentary opposites than they are absolutes. According to a study conducted by Ball State University, pet owners have a common perception that their personalities closely resemble the traits of the pets they keep. Cat owners tend to view themselves as more independent, graceful, confident and mysterious. Dog owners view themselves as loyal, faithful, playful and social. In the best of terms, dog and cat owners agree: Dogs have family; cats have staff. Where did this division begin? The human-dog relationship can be traced to early fossil records dating back 14,000 years. Humans and dogs co-evolved and fostered a relationship of benefiting in everything from companionship to an early warning system. The cat relationship is newer. About 3,000 years ago wild cats became attracted to Egyptians’ grain storage where they could find mice. The ancient Egyptians domesticated the cat and worshiped them as gods. Yet although completely different in their forms of companionship, dogs and cats are always found bound together in some way. Terms such as “raining cats and dogs” and “fighting like cats and dogs” are found in the same realm, coexisting in the same circle.

In the United States alone, it is estimated that there are 82 million cats and 72 million dogs. Each family pet is important to many owners as a family member. Interdependent, and opposite, dog and cat admirers have as much in common as found in their differences. Most pet owners find that they have lower blood pressure, fewer headaches and an improved sense of self-esteem. They essentially are the opposing sides of the same coin, as the Yin and Yang suggest. Ultimately, our instincts to be a “cat person” or a “dog person” will remain unchanged even as we discover ourselves as part of the same circle of Yin and Yang. Every dog lover will still have a small sample of cat lover traits and vice-versa. The two merge and make up the whole. There is oneness, solidarity among pet owners that can bridge any gap among such staunch opposites. In the end, the love remains, whether you are pro-dog or pro-cat, the love that is found through your companion will always be your common ground.

OUR ANIMALS/OURSELVES How Do Animals Get Information from Us? by Jo Maldonado

It never ceases to amaze me how the information I receive from animals I work with in my consultations directly reflects what is going on in their owners’ lives. For example: A young woman calls me because her dog is attacking people and animals outside on the street, yet is calm and friendly when inside the house. One session with her reveals that the owner has a tremendous fear of crowds. The dog transferred and assumed her anxieties. As the woman was terrified of the outside, she was unable to assume a “leader” mentality with her dog, so the dog became the “leader” by taking on the responsibility of control. So how do our animals sense and reflect what is going on in our lives? BODY LANGUAGE: 90% of human communication is nonverbal. Posture, head carriage, gait and facial expressions speak volumes about your mood and motivation. Act happy and your dog will wag excitedly and present her favorite toy for you to toss. Hang your head in sorrow and she’ll slink over and affectionately press her head in your lap. A fearful person tends to tense up and stare. A cat can’t resist such an enigmatic subject. Dogs tend to misread a fearful person’s behavior as a “challenge” posture. SOUND/TONE OF VOICE: Your voice carries an energy that’s linked with your emotions. They can hear the different inflections in your voice that mean that you’re happy, anxious, sad, tentative or angry. Pets’ sensitive ears also hear a wide range of frequencies inaudible to us; their radar ears pick up the subtle sounds of cars braking, footfalls on the sidewalk, the jingle of keys. SCENT: A dog’s sense of smell is approximately one million times more sensitive than ours. When you are sick, your metabolism changes and different chemicals appear in your breath which a dog can sense. This may be one way that seizurealert dogs know when a person is about to have a seizure. It’s probably true that dogs can “smell fear” because when you’re anxious you start to perspire lightly which a dog can smell. THOUGHTS: If you’re concerned, worried, happy, depressed or angry, your thoughts or pictures in your head will carry a message to your pet. So before you walk into your home feeling grumpy because you had a bad day, think about how you act and whether your anger at this point is even justified. Because whatever you think will be “read” by your dog. It’s Jo Maldonado’s goal at C.A.T. to offer classes that answer some of your questions regarding your pet’s behavior, nutrition, or health. On a personal level as someone who “sees and hears” beyond what is physically present, Jo can offer you a multi-dimensional perspective from animals who are with you physically, or in the afterlife. For appointments via telephone or in person, email: jo@cat-edu.com, 407-869-1145, or visit www.cat-edu.com. Please also see ad this page.

HandERBAL M EDICINE the Balance of Nature

Aurora Perfumes Company

Perfume making parties where you can make all natural and mostly organic perfumes, lotions and beauty products with custom scents.

BY DAWN GATES Nature is in a constant state of creating balance. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese doctors and philosophers described this as Yin and Yang. “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine,” supposed to have been written during the third millennium BCE, talks about this balance. The text says: “The principle of Yin and Yang is the foundation of the entire universe. It underlies everything in creation. It brings about the development of parenthood; it is the root and source of life and death it is found with the temples of the gods. In order to treat and cure diseases one must search for their origins. Heaven was created by the concentration of Yang, the force of light; earth was created by the concentration of Yin, the forces of darkness. Yang stands for peace and serenity; Yin stands for confusion and turmoil. Yang stands for destruction; Yin stands for conservation. Yang brings about disintegration; Yin gives shape to things…” This medical text has influenced natural medicine and healers since it was made available. Its explanation of dis-ease in the body is based on an imbalance of Yin/ Yang and how dis-ease can be treated just by creating balance. I use this principle in my herbal practice via a method taught by my herbal teacher, Matthew Wood. However, this balance between the lighter and darker side of disease is not limited to TCM. I was also taught by a Dakota medicine woman, Dottie Running Horse, who shared the same principles using different terms. This need for nature and humankind to be in balance is part of our journey on this planet. It is both our right and duty to obtain it and help others find

it if they have lost the ability to get it themselves. For example, I treated several Native American clients when I lived in Minnesota. Most of them were living a life out of balance. One had a problem with alcohol, one with Krispy Kreme donuts, and another had spiritual issues due to a Shaman’s attack that had left her medically disabled in this world. Each of these people needed not only herbs and ceremony to treat their medical issues but their spiritual ones as well. I used herbs to treat them medically but also gave them exercises to balance the Yin and Yang of their spirits. I had one person walk through the prairie on the reservation while they chanted a warrior’s song. Another I gave a crow feather to smudge herself with every day, and the other I gave a sacred plant and had him plant and tend it in the garden. The exercises themselves seem odd, but their purpose was to help each person bring balance into their life. These people not only needed the herbal medicine that I was giving them to treat their dis-ease, they needed spiritual medicine to bring their souls back into a state of balance. Adventure

Wellness used to be a pie-inthe sky goal for me, a goal that left me feeling inadequate and overwhelmed. My mantra was, “If I had 30 minutes to exercise, I’d take a nap!” One day, without questioning the thought, I curled up and and slept for an hour. During that nap, I dreamt of a new me–an active and vibrant woman, running, playing and enjoying her life. By the simple act of listening to and honoring my body’s need for rest, I received a great gift. A nap brought hope and the beginning of a vision.

by Kim Ellis, R. N.

This vision was far from my reality. At 38, I was overworked, chronically ill and completely exhausted. My list of prescription medications was longer than that of most 70 year olds. As a nurse, trusting in and depending on conventional medicine, I felt like a total health failure. Unable to eat solid food, experiencing constant headaches and a racing heart, I was spiraling downward so fast I wasn’t sure I would see my 40th birthday. In desperation, I consulted every expert but forgot to listen to my own body. My personal wellness vision initiated an incredible journey. A simple walk around the block was the first step. It sounded so easy, but I was out of shape and sick. I barely made it home. As I climbed what my husband and I came to call “Mount DeLand” (the equivalent of a block-long speed bump), I was near tears. This small but overwhelming rise in the road became symbolic of my great climb out of dis-ease. As “Mount DeLand” grew smaller, I grew stronger. Within two months, I was biking and even jogging. As I crossed the finish line of my first sprint triathlon one year later, I knew it was only the beginning. Over time, my dependence on prescription medications vanished. I began to think of myself as chronically well, rather than chronically ill. I was a woman on the path to creating wholeness. My wellness journey continues and is taking me to places I never would have imagined. Somewhere along the way I lost my heavily processed, fatty diet and found plant-based goodness and nourishing herbs. Each step is an adventure, and now I know that wellness isn’t a goal, it’s a journey that anyone can take. Kim Ellis, R.N., is a Certified Health Counselor. She will be teaching her flagship course, “8 Weeks to Wellness” at the Florida School of Holistic Living in Orlando Florida, empowering each of us towards the next step in our wellness journey with fun and inspiration. Dear Mom and Dad by Julie Norris • Contributing Community Editor

Dear Mom and Dad, After all these years, we finally have something in common. With the birth of my daughter, I join you in the ranks of parenthood and I want to thank you with this new understanding of all that being a parent is. MOM, please let me thank you for all the nurturing and care-taking you did over the years. I now understand how much of yourself was invested in our lives. So little is made of the major effort involved in taking care of the basics in life like getting meals on the table, socks and shoes on the right feet, teeth and hair brushed after a warm bath, getting all of us to sleep at night. It’s a major adventure leaving little time or space for any of your own interests. You did that for us every day for years and years. How amazing. You could have stopped there as that is plenty for anyone to handle, but you really made childhood so much fun. I remember the way you decorated our rooms with balloons and the little kitchen set that occupied me for hours. The birthday parties at home, the swim team, cheerleading, girl scouts, story-time at the library. The tea parties and fun times with neighborhood families. The cats you put up with for us, the bad acting you sat through, the writing you encouraged. You rode horses when you really really didn’t want to. You were constant. You were involved. You were always showing up for us. You made magic out of every holiday and kept traditions that I know I will continue in the coming years, like really bad pajama sets on Christmas Eve and homemade cookies enjoyed under our beautiful Christmas tree. You always brought the focus inward, to home, to creating space. Thank you mother, for all that and more. DAD, thank you so much for all the excitement and providing you did over the years. You laid a solid foundation for us all of us to live and your dedication to family always had us going on adventures. I remember looking at the stars as I fell asleep in the hatchback on family vacations, cutting down our own Christmas tree with you, stopping on the side of the road to watch fireworks, being flung into the swimming pool over and over in the hot sun. You connected me with nature and a love of photography and showed me how to play frogger on the Commodore 64. You taught me self-reliance when you made me replace the fender on the car all by myself. You explained how the engine in the car works and why supporting a local pizza place was better than Domino’s. You explained how Wal-Mart hurt small businesses like those in your hometown. We took road trips in the desert together where we enjoyed silence. You created a trail of excitement and adventure, not worrying too much about driving inside the lines. You always showed me the world, possibilities and the impact decisions have on those around us. You demonstrated integrity and responsibility. Thank you father, for all that and more. Together you raised a family. Sometimes we were more dependent on mom, other times dad, often we went out into the world as one. It was a wonderful balance of masculine and feminine. I know there were tough times in the midst of all that fun and adventure, and sometimes those things are the ones most often discussed, but there is a rich history of good times, too. Those are the things that I carry with me, that shaped me into the adventuresome, thoughtful, I-can-do-anything mom that I am who takes care of all the details, too. Thanks for showing me the way, for taking care of me, for letting me go every time it was time. I appreciate you both so much, and understand you in a whole new light these days. In gratitude,

EYEBROW THREADING

FOR A MORE, EXOTICALLY BEAUTIFUL YOU! Threading, an ancient method of hair removal which originated in parts of India and the Middle and Far East, is now gaining popularity in Western countries. Threading is a hair removal and eyebrow shaping technique that uses 100% cotton thread. The cotton thread is twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin entwining the hairs in the thread which are then quickly lifted from the follicle. It is more precise than waxing and allows for better lines. The technique is rather inexpensive because it does not require costly chemical ingredients. Messy waxes and creams are avoided altogether. For women who would like to pursue a more natural beauty regimen, hair threading is a good choice since it does not use harmful products.

are not peeled or traumatized in the process and this makes threading far gentler on the skin. Threading is highly recommended and an excellent option for those who use Retin-A, Accutane or similar products. Unlike tweezing or plucking, eyebrow threading removes one clean line of hair all at once, making it much quicker and easier to shape the brows. It lasts longer than other techniques of eyebrow shaping, too. It is important to find an aesthetician who is experienced at eyebrow threading. Inexperience can result in uneven brows, hair breakage, ingrown hairs or unnecessary pain. Please see ad for Threading & Skin care, left.

If you want to do something well, whatever it may be, any kind of work, the least thing, play a game, write a book, do painting or music or run a race, anything at all, if you want to do it well, you must become what you are doing and not remain a small person looking at himself doing it; for if one looks at oneself acting, one is... one is still in complicity with the ego. --Mirra Alfassa (February 21, 1878 - November 17, 1973), also known as The Mother, was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo.

THERE IS A CURE for the common

cold

by Kateyah Kapashah, LMT Colon Hydrotherapist “HYGIENE IS TWO THIRDS OF HEALTH.” — A Lebanese Proverb Hygiene is the science that deals with the promotion and the preservation of health. People who live hygienic lives are seldom sick and rarely get colds. Colds are caused by how we live although a virus or several kinds of disease germs do play a role in a cold’s proliferation. These living conditions include exposure to cold and wet, exhaustion, insufficient physical exercise, overeating (especially such concentrated foods as meat, sugars and fats), diseased tonsils and adenoids, and stress, all of which diminish the strength of our immune systems. To be truly well and free from the plague of discomfort and nuisance of colds, our immune systems must be called into action periodically. In the pre-antibiotic era before World War II, enemas were a fact of life in many homes. If you had signs of a cold, you stayed home from school and probably took a series of enemas. The Adventist book, “Modern Medical Counselor” prescribed enemas for a cold and so did the American Medical Association’s Secretary, Dr. Morris Fishbein, in his medical books of the ’40s. The colon stores toxic waste until it can be evacuated from the body. This matter is loaded with bacteria. During a cold, viral particles thrive in quantity in the colon. By gently washing away this material either by colonic irrigation with a therapist or by enema at home, the body is now allowed to focus on the respiratory tract rather than the colon. When a rhinovirus or pathogen is detected by transmitters in the colon, the immune system moves into response mode and the healing focus is placed largely on the colon. If the colon is cleansed through irrigation, the body will be able to focus on its natural healing response elsewhere such as in the lungs and nose. The quick use of colon therapy brings immediate relief and directs the immune mechanism to point to where it is most needed. In addition to colonic irrigation, alkalizing the body with lots of fresh, leafy, green vegetables and Vitamins C and A will boost the body the ward off the cold. The dark, green, leafy vegetables actually contain more Vitamin C than citrus fruits. It should be noted that vegetarians who severely restrict or abstain from dairy products rarely get colds. A hygienic diet is part of a hygienic lifestyle. It’s vegetarian or vegan (no animal products including dairy) and abounds in raw fruits and vegetables. Colon therapists are very knowledgeable about the benefits of colonic irrigation for fast relief of colds and even flu. Colon hydrotherapy is completely safe, hygienic, gentle and actually promotes youth and longevity over time. Kateyah Kapashah, LMT, RYT (MA 17989) received her HypnoBirth practitioner certificate and welcomes you to her new Tavares location at 2521 Dora Ave, behind Kohls. MOON ASTROLOGY May-June 2011 “Change is rumbling underneath us, swelling from every crack in the culture and through every choice we make. We can resist and feel torn by its tremors or choose to roll with the waves, set our sails towards personal and cultural evolution, and see where the current takes us.” (From We’Moon Calendar 2011, page 21.) With so much shifting and changing for each one of us individually and in our world, the monthly cycle of the moon may be one of the few things we can count on to remain constant. Attuning to the moon cycle can bring many benefits to our body, mind and spirit including more of a connection to nature and the flow of the Universal energies; increased patience with ourselves and others and a deeper feeling of inner peace in these turbulent times. Consciously be aware of starting anew in some way with each New Moon. Feel a sense of heightened emotions and insight around the Full Moon. Allow yourself to clean out and release old, outmoded patterns, beliefs and possessions as we approach the end of the moon cycle and next new moon. The Sun moves through the fixed earth sign TAURUS from April 20 to May 20 anchoring the season of Spring. We are encouraged to slow down just a bit so we can smell the flowers and feel gratitude for the beauty and abundance in our life. It is a time to take the necessary steps in order to ground our ideas and inspirations into a more concrete form. With the NEW MOON in Taurus on May 3, what seeds will you plant for the evolution of our world? What can you do to further harmony and cooperation in your own life and community? Loving thoughts, service and a positive vision can be the first step. There are three major spiritual festivals on our planet that form the spiritual high point of the year. They occur every year in the Spring and can be a means of achieving a greater spiritual unity throughout our world. This celebration of light begins each year with the Easter Full Moon, the festival of the Risen One bringing the Christ energy of unconditional love to the planet. The second is the Wesak Festival on the Taurus/Scorpio Full Moon bringing the Wisdom and Blessings of the Buddha. (Check out http://souledout.org for more details.) As we approach the FULL MOON of May 16, feel the energy begin to build and tap into the uplifted velocity of this auspicious timing. Be very aware of what you are feeling and experiencing. Examine your interactions with others. What is in need of change? Your expectations, beliefs, patterns of relating? Are your boundaries clear in your own mind? Consciously work on letting go of any unhealthy patterns or attachments as we approach the next New Moon.

BY RAVEN MOONDANCE Maintain your center. Be conscious. Be present. May these affirmations assist you as you navigate the ever-shifting journey on your sacred path!

ARIES (March 20-April 19) Trust that life unfolds in line with Divine

Timing. It is essential to be patient, especially if any expectations are causing you stress. As you begin a new year with your birthday, utilize the first three months as a time of listening to your inner knowingness and to be open to new ideas, possibilities and opportunities. Take in what comes to you. Let it integrate into your being, asking for guidance in line with your highest good and patiently allowing life to unfold before you. AFFIRMATION: One day at a time, I allow life to unfold before me. I AM guided. I AM supported and I AM blessed in every moment.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) As you complete one year and begin a new one with your birthday, take some time to honestly examine your life. Whatever helps you feel confident, aligned and joyful should be strengthened. Where you feel stress, disharmony or drained needs to be addressed right now! Perhaps you need a change in attitude, perception or in a particular circumstance. Your goal is to feel good about yourself and your life. Do it! Make that change! AFFIRMATION: Each day I step more fully into empowerment, harmony and joy, the essence of my true being. I AM blessed. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) This past year has been a time of deep inner work for you with many trials and tribulations. Haven’t you gained some powerful insights about yourself? Think about it! Take some time as you contemplate your year to consciously clean out your space. Let go of some of the anxiety and tension you have been holding on to. Make time to do whatever relaxes and renews you–an aromatherapy bath, a walk in the woods or by the water, yoga, a massage. This is a time of self-renewal as you prepare to begin a new year with your birthday. Focus on nurturing selfcare and a positive vision for the year ahead. AFFIRMATION: As I release the past, my heart opens to a joyful, loving, peaceful future for myself and our world. (Take a deep breath in.) Ahhhhhhhhh! CANCER (June 21-July 22) Slow down a bit. You have some really good

The sun is in the mutable air sign GEMINI from May 21 to June 20 . The air energy of Gemini brings the winds of change, signalling termination of the old and preparation for the new. This is a transition time as we move towards a change of seasons to Summer on June 21.

insights as to what is and is NOT working in your life. Contemplate what changes need to be made both within your mind and heart and in your daily life in order to support your revised vision of who you are. Ask for the guidance you need from your Higher Self. Take time to listen to any messages that may come to you. Daily affirm your trust in God/Goddess/ the Universe and feel the joy of being alive. AFFIRMATION: With each breath, I feel my body, mind and spirit align more and more fully with my true essence and my true path. I AM grateful for all my experiences.

The NEW MOON in Gemini on June 1 is a SOLAR ECLIPSE “encouraging us to look eye to eye and get on the same side. Teamwork can move mountains.” (From We’Moon 2011, page 18.) The FULL MOON in Gemini/Sagittarius on June 15 is a LUNAR ECLIPSE. The third of the Spring Festivals, it is the festival of goodwill also know as the festival of humanity or World Invocation Day uniting the love of the Christ and the wisdom of the buddha to assist in the evolution of humanity. An eclipse greatly intensifies the energy of the moon and at this spiritually powerful time of the year has the potential to truly shift the consciousness on our planet. Attune to the Full Moon and see what insights you gain about your true role or mission in these unprecedented times.

LEO (July 23-Aug.22) Don’t push so hard to make things move forward right now. Be patient and allow life to unfold. Examine any expectations you may have or any need to control a situation. Patience is the key. We cannot pick the corn until it is ripe and so it is with life. All things happen when the time is right. Step back a bit, observe yourself and life. Trust that all is in Divine Order. We are changing from deep within–body, mind, spirit and emotions–and this is creating dynamic shifts in how we interact with each other, our world and life. AFFIRMATION: I AM present in this moment. I feel the joy of my life shifting, changing and evolving in line with my highest good and the highest good of the planet. All is well and all is in Divine Order.

VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) We can no longer expect life to unfold in a

logical, orderly manner as I am sure you have noticed lately. The intensely shifting and changing energies are constantly reminding us to stay present without expectation or judgements of ourselves, others or what is occurring in our world. We are being encouraged to remember the magic in life and to step more fully into the mystical where we may not be in control but also where anything is possible. Whenever you find yourself caught up in the maya or illusion of what could, should or would happen, tap into that magical part of yourself. Trust that you are totally guided, supported and loved in each and every moment, no matter what that moment may appear to be. AFFIRMATION: My life magically unfolds before me. I feel the support of the Universe. I know I am being guided and I am enjoying every exciting moment.

LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.22) Contemplate what is being reflected to you by

the people and situations in your life, especially where there is stress, anxiety or agitation. Remember it is not about the external—what is happening is merely a reflection of what we need to examine within ourselves. Be gentle with yourself. Observe objectively, without judgement and trust that what you need to become more aware of will be revealed. Greater clarity will come during the time of Gemini (May 21-June 20). AFFIRMATION: The light in each person I see reflects my inner radiance. Where there is dissonance, I see the light enter and create harmony for myself and my world.

SCORPIO

(Oct.23-Nov.21) This is your time of greatest insight and clarity and also, possibly challenge. It is the full moon of your year—a time to observe, ask for guidance and patiently assimilate what is being revealed before making any important decisions or changes. You may feel inspired or filled with excess energy. Use that charge to create whatever your heart desires with your thoughts, words and actions. Align you mind and heart with the Highest aspect of your Divine Self and create an awesome, lifeaffirming vision for yourself and our world. AFFIRMATION: I AM open to guidance, insight and inspiration. I envision only the most positive unfolding in my life and in our world. We are ONE.

SAGITTARIUS

(Nov.22-Dec.21) Notice the intuitive messages that come from deep within and also the signs that you see in the world around you that validate what you are sensing and feeling. Your inner knowingness is your most reliable guide. No matter what may occur in your life or in our world, go within to that place of love, peace and joy deep in your soul and then see it radiate from your being to others and the earth. These are amazing but also challenging times. When we allow our true essence to shine despite the chaos, we are greatly assisting in the upliftment and evolution of our planet. AFFIRMATION: As I inhale, my sense of inner peace, love and joy strengthens. As I exhale, I radiate that peace, love and joy to all those around me and to the Earth. I AM peace.

CAPRICORN (Dec.22-Jan.19) You may have moved through some

difficult issues and/or emotions recently and now you are ready to step forward. Feel good about your inner work and how far you have come in your growth, on your path, in such a relatively short period of time. Observe your self confidence and sense of empowerment. Do you feel stronger and more aligned with your true self? You are indeed ready to step more fully into your true work, mission or path. As you review the past months and your accelerated journey, can you see how you are being guided? Remember that you are always being supported and guided even in the darkest of times. AFFIRMATION: I step forward in strength, confidence and total alignment with my true self and my true work. I AM guided and blessed in every moment.

AQUARIUS (Jan.20-Feb.18) You may have a sense that you have gone

feeling better able to negotiate life from a more centered and grounded place? Whenever a challenge or doubt arises, try to observe as opposed to react to or judge what is occurring. Remember, it is our job to remain in our center, regardless of what is happening, and to be in service to the Earth and to all our relations. Tap into that source of inner strength and guidance and remember that all is in Divine Order. AFFIRMATION: I AM grounded in the Earth, connected to the Light and guided by my inner knowingness. All is in perfect and Divine Order. I KNOW I am supported on my journey. PISCES (Feb.19-March 19) As a sensitive water sign, you are most likely feeling some of the anxiety, chaos and upheaval that is occurring in our world in your own physical body, mind and/or emotions. You don’t need to take on all that craziness as your own, but instead, allow it to move through you by taking good care of yourself. Be sure to establish time in your schedule for regular stress releasers, relaxation and rejuvenation. Be patient as you carefully continue to set a healthy foundation for your year ahead with a strong focus on self-care. As you process the stress and anxiety you feel, you are assisting our world to move through these chaotic times. AFFIRMATION: As I breathe out, all stress, anxiety and tension drain from my body, mind and emotions. As I breathe in, peace, love and harmony fill every cell of my being. I AM renewed. 2012: PREPARING FOR CHANGE

JAPAN – A PREVIEW OF 2012?

A Heartfelt Message

by Rev. Andrew Cekun

As we compassionately hold the intention of love and healing for the people and land of Japan, let us learn and apply the message of 2012 concerning Earth Changes. What can the experience of Japan tell us about 2012? In past articles, I have described the primary expression of the 2012 Earth Changes as a pole shift, displacing the oceans, resulting in flooding, inundation by water and permanent submersion of much of the earth. This will occur worldwide, involving all coastal areas of the planet, except in the extreme northern and southern latitudes. Knowing that 70% of the Earth population lives in or near the coastal regions of the planet, the potential impact on humanity is huge and overwhelming. Can you imagine the tsunamis of 2011 in Japan and 2004 in Indonesia/Asia occurring worldwide (but far larger and more destructive) within 48 hours (December 17-18, 2012)? One can only conclude that this will result in the complete destruction of the present order on Earth, exactly as predicted by the Spiritual Teacher Kuthumi (Master K.H.). How then, to take this reality check and turn it into meaningful action? I offer some suggestions:

1.

2. 3. 4. 5.

Learn and accept the painful truths of reality instead of the untruths being hyped in the New Age media about the fairy tale scenarios and sublime rewards supposedly awaiting us in 2012 (5-D consciousness, ascension, personal or mass “rescue” by divine intervention, etc.). Survival is a choice. Make plans to move to a safe location on the Earth (this information has been provided), or accept your personal mortality and impending death. Make the most of your limited time by reordering your priorities, and deciding what your personal legacy will become. Think of the service and contribution you can make NOW. Seize the unrepeatable opportunities offered by the influx of facilitating energies now on the earth to achieve higher/expanded consciousness through personal effort, striving, and living a disciplined, spiritual life. Accelerated spiritual evolution is now possible, especially if one uses the techniques and methods of the Ageless Wisdom Teachings, once only taught in the ancient mystery schools. As Master K.H. has said, “There are now places on Earth where you can walk and be strengthened in who you are and what you know. Find these places…,” and “In this way learn to create a place of retreat and remembrance in your own lives, away from the noise and busyness of daily life.” Find joy in living. Take the time to smell the roses. Forgive yourself and others. Make amends, “mend fences.” Release all attachments. Refine desire and emotions. Develop greater compassion. Make peace with your life. Get your personal affairs in order. Live each day as if it were your last. Be grateful. Realize the great spiritual opportunity of being in physical incarnation. Share with others. Be as loving and giving as possible. Render service!

The Rev. Andrew Cekun is an esoteric Astrologer and Teacher. A student of the Ageless Wisdom teachings for 30 years, he educates about the Path of Accelerated Spiritual Evolution. Andrew has a BA degree in Philosophy & Religion from Rollins College. He is an ordained ADL Minister (a metaphysical, interfaith church). He practices esoteric (soul-centered), astrology that emphasizes one’s soul purpose and recognizing spiritual opportunity. Andrew is available for lectures, readings and classes. I met you on a Monday. We fell in love that day. We married on a Tuesday. Throwing all our cares away. We had our kids on Wednesday. And time got in the way. Thursday was a battle as we fought to work or play. Friday we divorced and walked away in song. Saturday I missed you and asked, Just what went wrong? Sunday I discovered that it wasn’t you or me. We tried to change each other to what we wanted us to be!

Partnerships and marriages are probably the two most difficult relationships to maintain, most likely because we rush into them seeking fortune or emotional satisfaction. We neglect to think through the consequence of failure. We often find ourselves drowning in “what ifs” and “should haves.” Like our parents, we stand on traditions, forgetting that things are NOT the same as they were. Gender roles have changed drastically! Perhaps in place of Honor and Obey we might revise our commitment to a new understanding; changing vows to a covenant of communication. You and I are in a relationship, one that I cherish and want to preserve. We are also two separate people with our individual values and needs. In order to better know and understand each other, let us always be open and honest in our communication. Ours is a contribution of 100% commitment. So when you are giving 60%, I may be giving 40% and when you are giving 40% I will give 60%. Collectively we will always be putting forth 100%. When you are having a problem I will listen with absolute acceptance and understanding. Rather than imposing my solutions, I will encourage you to find your own solutions. When your priorities or attitudes interfere with what is important to me, I will tell you openly and honestly, trusting that you will respect my needs and feelings enough to come to a mutual resolution. Just as when some of my behaviors are not acceptable to you, I hope you will return the honesty as well. We will never always agree but we can always be open to changing our behaviors, by honoring our individuality and respecting our boundaries. And when we experience conflicts that seem irreconcilable, let us both agree to resolve them without using a force of wills. Let us strive to search for a solution that will be acceptable to both of us. Your needs will be met as well as mine; neither lose, both will win. This way we can continue to grow forward and develop with our individual self-esteem and pride intact and flourishing. Thus ours will be a healthy relationship in which we both can strive to fulfill our dreams. Recognizing our fullest potentials with mutual respect, love and peace. Diane is author of “The Gathering,” a book of poems addressing life’s addictions, co-dependencies and obsessions. Her workbook on anger management, “Shut the Duck Up,” has been used with great success at The Anthony House, a homeless shelter formerly housed in Zellwood, Florida. Please see ad this page.

The Energy of

THE GODDESS Before recorded time, there were societies around the world that were based on female energies. This female power carried the energy of the goddess. The female energy at that time was bountiful, as communal societies resided in the idea that the tribe came first. It was a time when the interests of the whole took precedence over the individual. However, for the past few thousand years the energy of the earth has been tilted toward masculine energy. Masculine energy gave rise to patriarchal power. Perhaps this was necessary to provide the impetus for the rise of hierarchy. Technology, which is the result of the rational, left-brained male energy, has not been a bad thing. It is a powerful force in our world. However, male energy, when out of balance, has negative influences upon society. The negative influences give rise to such acts as cruelty, dominance, war, and action without regard for others. Female power, which is right-brained, is holistic and circular. Female power is necessary to help hold the excesses of the male power in check. When the divine feminine blends with the masculine we come into proper balance. There has been a pleasant shift on the planet lately with an increase of feminine energy to help balance the masculine energy that has been dominant for so many centuries. As we evolve in spiritual consciousness it is necessary to transcend the duality of male and female energy, and honor our spiritual wholeness within.

embody the qualities that you notice are missing, and tone down the ones that are overdone. For example, if you tend to be overly active and are always doing, then you most likely have a lot of masculine, yang, energy. To begin to balance this masculine energy, practice slowing down. Take time to meditate or pray each day. Go for slow walks in nature and practice a relaxing form of yoga. If you tend to be nurturing and agreeable, or if you are always playing the nice role by meeting the needs of everyone but your own, then you may have a large amount of female, yin, energy. If this is the case, begin to initiate projects just for you. Set healthy boundaries by saying No at least once a week. Women and men who begin to embody their feminine and masculine energy are strong, wise, loving, creative human beings. They appreciate the active yang energy of taking action and setting boundaries when needed, while honoring the nurturing yin energy of stillness and gentleness. Within each one of us, regardless of our gender, are the elements of male and female energies. As we balance our yin and yang energies we come into proper balance – and so does planet earth. Rev. Mary Blocher was ordained as a Unity Minister in 2005. Rev. Mary holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University. Prior to entering ministry she was a special education teacher for 24 years. Nine of those 24 years she lived and taught on the Navajo Reservation where she learned firsthand the traditions, customs, and spirituality of Native Americans. A LIFE IN

BALANCE FEELS GOOD

I

by Debbie Paulk

love my life when it’s in balance. It just feels good. I’m happy, peaceful, passionate and excited about my work, my relationships are very pleasant and loving, I’m getting enough “me” time, and I sleep like a baby at night.

Recently it was clear to me that, with too much on my plate, I had overextended myself with too many new projects, deadlines and commitments, and allowed myself to get completely out of balance. For me that equals overwhelmed. Prepare for meltdown. I was spinning my wheels and getting nowhere. I had to stop myself in my tracks and regain my sense of balance. I silently said a prayer, which allowed me to calm down enough to focus on the most important thing I needed to do next. I’ve realized over time that I do my best in life when I honor myself first. It’s important for me to have some time during the day devoted to quiet time or meditation. Time spent in rejuvenating ourselves mentally, emotionally and spiritually promotes an overall sense of well-being. I truly enjoy helping everyone, however I sometimes tend to overdo it. I know my limits on what I can comfortably give to people, and when I do too much and deny myself time to breathe because of a

crammed-packed schedule, no one really benefits. It reminds me of the safety instructions the flight attendant gives us when on an airplane: First place the oxygen mask over your own nose and mouth, then assist the person next to you. Makes sense. How can we help anyone else effectively unless we first take care of ourselves. We all have masculine (yang) and feminine (yin) energy within us. Both are equally valuable and important. Together, yin and yang create balance, in our body and in nature. An authentic life is one that honors the true essence of our true self. This is all our dreams, desires, passions and purpose in life, what brings us pure joy. Our life flows beautifully when in balance, and when it’s not we can feel the difference. We can choose to live a life of balance when we map out exactly where we want to go. Having a direction in life, and a plan, guides us along our way. Simply writing down what we want in life and having some clear, set goals and intentions begins the process. Allowing intuition to reveal our next steps moves us along, where we meet up with the right people, places and opportunities that propel us to take action which ultimately creates the life of our dreams. Everyone has their own sense of what gives them balance in life. When we work too much and don’t have enough time for fun, family or ourselves we can feel off balance. Take a moment and ask yourself, When have I felt most balanced in life? Now think back to a time when you’ve had that balance, and really visualize that memory in detail. Feel the feelings you felt. What was happening in your life? Notice your surroundings, all the colors and smells. Notice the people around you, what were they saying and doing? Relive the experience and connect with the balance of energies within you. Now, whenever you want to reconnect with that feeling of balance, do it first in your mind and use it as the roadmap back to a life in balance. It feels good. A Jungian Approach to FEMININE and MASCULINE ENERGIES

by David Botsford

Some

people who hear about my intuitive readings express surprise at discovering a man offering psychic services. Aren’t women naturally more suited to that field? Indeed they are. The corpus callosum, the “bridge” which unites the left and right hemispheres of the brain, is larger in women, resulting in the well-known phenomenon of “female intuition.” So psychic processes indeed come more easily to women. Visit a guy for his intuitive ability, and you know he’s had to work hard to develop it! In fact, the psychic world – the world of the unconscious – is simply “out there,” ready to be discovered by everyone. My exploration of the unconscious started as a hypnotist, commonly assumed to be a more “masculine” role. In helping people achieve their goals through unconscious learning, it became obvious that the unconscious is not confined to the inside of a person’s head. Dr. Carl Jung, scholar of the unconscious, recognized that in addition to the personal unconscious is the collective unconscious, which “constitutes a common psychic substrate of a suprapersonal nature which is present in every one of us.”(1) He demonstrated that: “Either sex is inhabited by the opposite sex up to a point, for, biologically speaking, it is simply the greater number of masculine genes that tips the scales in favor of masculinity. The smaller number of feminine genes seems to form a feminine character, which usually remains unconscious because of its subordinate position.” (2)

maternity dress, a verdant forest and waterfall behind her. The Emperor (the animus) sits on a hard stone throne, dressed in armor, craggy mountains behind him. Contemplate either to develop feminine or masculine energy. (1) C.G. Jung, “Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious” (1934), in Violet de Laszlo (ed), Basic Writings of C.G.Jung, Modern Library/Random House, New York, 1959, p. 359. (2) Ibid, p. 390. (3) Ibid, p. 380. (4) Ibid, p. 404. David Botsford is a hypnotist and intuitive reader in the Four Corners area. He has produced a series of self-hypnosis CD sets and is the author of the book, “Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation.” His websites are www.4cornershypnosis.com and www.4cornersintuitive.com and www.selfhypnosiscd.com and he can be reached at 863-420-3634. The sympathetic nervous system enables us to connect with the collective unconscious “through functioning without sense-organs, it maintains the balance of life and, through the mysterious pathways of sympathetic excitation, not only gives us knowledge of the innermost life of other beings but also has an inner effect upon them.” (3) The anima (soul) is the feminine power in the male psyche; the animus (ego) is the masculine force within women. They are both archetypes of transformation, which can be invoked by symbols. Today, men and women often take on roles traditionally filled by the other gender. Single fathers care for children after a divorce. Women take leadership roles in the professions, commerce and government. It is often useful to draw on the anima or the animus in order to fulfill those roles. Jung recognized that “the set of pictures in the Tarot cards were distantly descended from the archetypes of transformation.” (4) The popular Rider-Waite Tarot deck is full of masculine and feminine symbols. The clearest symbol of the anima is the Empress, sitting on a luxurious throne in a cornfield, wearing a Velocity Magazine BALANCING THE MASCULINE AND FEMININE | May • June 2011

DEFINE YOUR

WHOLENESS

THROUGH YOUR CREATIONS by Jenenne Valentino-Bottaro

T

here are days when we are forced to see ourselves in different ways. We are split between the higher frequency of divine source and pure humanness. This split can be both painful and releasing at the same time. It happens so often that I hardly remember a time when I am not struggling with it. I often forget that achieving wholeness is not as far off as it may seem. In fact, it is much closer and constant than we may realize.

Wholeness can be found in the smallest of moments: A shift in the body, a pause in breath, a smile, or a sudden breeze. I also find that wholeness occurs with the divine masculine and divine feminine qualities that reside within me. When I can step into centeredness, I can feel wholeness and see and understand a different level of frequency. This only occurs when I am connected to both sides of me. I am continuously challenged by this, and I believed the myth that all those who exuded this wholeness – Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Buddha – were no longer faced with trials and the behaviors attached to those trials. The idea of perfect wholeness triggers the split for me, until I remember that even Mother Theresa had her moments, too! I am learning that it is not how perfectly I become whole, but more importantly that I just become whole. Honoring the

40

wisdom of the divine masculine and divine feminine essence that resides within is my first step to listen, learn and become. I find that this honor comes through in many ways: movement, silence, art, song, or writing. The common denominator in all of this is creativity, and that creativity resides in all of us. Through your creations, your masculine and feminine properties speak in unity, and wholeness occurs, even for a moment. But the more I practice within my creations, the moments occur more often. We do not stumble and fall with grace and perfection, so why do we expect our journey to wholeness to be any different? Simply define your wholeness through your creations.

Quiet Mind:

Finding Your Way Home

by Harry Palmer Consciousness has abilities that allow us to process and deal with the physical universe. Everyone is more or less aware of these abilities. Broadly they are imagining, thinking, and remembering. These are the aspects of mind. Only a few people are aware that consciousness has a much broader, intrinsic nature behind mind. This intrinsic nature is the realm of the Being. When it is entered, what was previously held to be important by imagining, thinking, and remembering is likely to become totally irrelevant. From this fathomless realm, all of the events and experiences of normal waking consciousness are satisfactorily encompassed by the curiously wise expression, "That's something." Assuming that people survive birth and fall within the normal parameters of genetic mutation, they are congenitally equipped with the thinking, imagining and remembering type of consciousness—a mind. In truth, they are hardly equipped with anything else. The result is that the Being grows up with its attention focused on the rewards and difficulties of surviving in a defined physical reality—celebration and struggle. Any hints that other realities exist (or could be created) that might offer more interesting games than variations of the pleasure-pain paradigm are relegated to fantasy or science fiction. For most Beings the first real suit of clothing is a hastily constructed conscious definition: "I'm the baby." That is an anchoring affirmation. The sad part is that the Being spends the rest of its life at anchor. Its energy is spent patching and layering the original birthday affirmation with conclusions and experiences fashioned after physical reality. It is unwise to confuse the realm of Being with the physical universe. Finally, the Being arrives at the end of its physical-life days still anchored in the definitions of mind. You could call mind the shallows of consciousness. What did the Being miss? The wonder of life? The awe of creation? The ecstasy of the divine? Essentially, it missed any experience of truth. Its only real experience is a sense of having been unhappily identified with a complex definition that required endless maintenance. This is what passes for a sane life in physical reality. The Being departs the body and shakes off the amnesia of definitions. "Well," it says, "that's something," referring to the fading mental and decaying physical definitions that it dreamed was self. There is a belated recognition that

thinking-imagining-remembering consciousness is severely limiting. It anchors life in one spot. So the Being gets the first lesson of Avatar, but without getting any of the tools. But it took a lifetime! That's way too slow. Can you imagine how many lifetimes it will take it to recognize that what it is experiencing may have something to do with what it is creating? Slow! What is needed is a way for the Being to raise the anchor of self definitions, without dying, and set sail into the eternal realms beyond mind. Getting back, going home. Exactly how to teach someone to do this has been the challenge of every spiritual practice. You see, the harder the Being works (imagines, thinks, remembers) to raise this anchor, the heavier the anchor grows. The mind can be an imprisoning paradox.

The thinking-imagining-remembering mind is a restless creator. It rummages in the past for motives like a hungry bear on a pile of garbage. It projects intentions onto other people. It projects happiness and danger into the future. It creates imaginary scenarios, calculates and strategizes plans, vicariously predicts and suffers consequences that never occur. It writes imaginary dialogs that are never spoken. It worries. It sings the same song over and over. It analyzes itself, scolding and praising according to some invisible script. It frantically analyzes for hidden meaning in even the most innocent comment, ever explaining itself to itself. Occasionally, somewhere between glee and despair, the Being wonders, "What is life all about?" And then it cautions itself to be realistic. It wonders about being quiet. "Quiet mind? Oh yes, I know quite a bit about that state. When I was in India..."

But wait. Now the Being sees all these Avatars sailing around having fantastic life adventures and still in touch with something more permanent than a paycheck. Intuitively the Being knows that the right to happiness is more than an accident of birth. The Being knows that there must be a way to slip the anchor of the mind. And of course there is—Avatar.

The quiet mind experience is so extraordinarily beautiful that many of the people who have momentarily experienced it spend the rest of their lives talking about it. This is how religions are born—trying to describe an experience whose fundamental quality is that it is without description.

How does it lift the anchor? The secret is do nothing deliberately. How does a Being do nothing deliberately? That's a key world lesson. Without the Avatar tools, doing nothing deliberately is not easy to learn. It is a difficult skill to acquire.

The moment of experience becomes a sacred memory-shrine in the mind. Graven mental images! Still, it is a beneficial memory in terms of coping with the stress and discouragement of life. It is a mental amulet of hope.

• • • •

It is widely considered that the quiet mind experience can be reached only after long and hard practice (or perhaps temporarily induced by a shaman's magic). It is considered so fragile an experience that even a non-deliberate breath can shatter it. So it is quite a surprise that Avatar can teach a person how to deliberately produce this state in a matter of days. A pleasant surprise!

There are occasional moments in life when thinking stops and, among other things, a Being becomes fully aware of the circumstances of its own existence without any reactions to them. At least there ought to be such moments—periods of time when attention moves beyond the scope of daily concerns. The common self falls asleep, and an extraordinary self awakens. This extraordinary self, a higher self, has a quality not found in the common self—quiet mind. Quiet mind is independent of time and does not react or create non-deliberately. The anchor of "I am thisnot-that" disappears. An awareness awakens that is beyond any defining construction. This is a moment of enlightenment. Achieving this state of quiet mind, even for a moment, is a great accomplishment. An even greater accomplishment is maintaining this state. It is such an unusual accomplishment that when you tell a Being that the quiet mind state is an expected result of the Avatar training, you are usually met with disbelief.

What is even more incredible, but nonetheless true, is to realize that since Avatar's introduction in 1987, more Beings have stably achieved the state of quiet mind than in all of the ages before Avatar. Remind the Being that it is no longer necessary to withdraw from the world, or live a life of self denial, or risk its mental health to achieve a state of quiet mind. Remind the Being to do Avatar. 'Goods' for Conscious Consumers....

What's new, what's exciting, what's worth buying. Home cooks Thora and Ed Pomicter always had a passion for global cuisine, but were often challenged by ethnic recipes that required so many different spices that it was nearly impossible for them to keep their pantry adequately stocked. To resolve this, and help other home cooks add the flavor of various world cuisines to everyday meals with ease, they created Teeny Tiny Spice Company of Vermont (http://teenytinyspice.com). Their collection of spice blends includes twelve certified organic spice blends that celebrate the culinary culture of regions around the globe such as South America, East Africa, Northwest and Southwest India, Montréal, Malaysia, Iran, North Africa and the Mediterranean. “We provide spices already combined in proportions to give you just the right flavor profile to create dishes with the essential flavors of North and South, East and West,” says Ed. The blends include: British Curry, Citrus Pepper, Chocolate Chili, Ethiopian Berberé, Garam Masala, Montréal Seasoning, Penang Curry, Perfection Spice Rub, Persian Adwiya, Ras el Hanout, Shepherd Herb Mix and Vindaloo. To ensure the freshest spices and herbs, Teeny Tiny Spice blends are made in small batches that are freshly ground just before being packaged. In place of salt and sugar, Himalayan Pink Salt and organic Vermont Maple Sugar are used. The mixtures are offered in mild, medium or hot blends. High integrity Teeny Tiny Spice blends are sold in 2.8 ounce reusable tins for a suggested retail price of $9.95 each. what’Surbag (http://whatsurbag-usa.com), a company that started with just one reusable shopping bag, has just released a whole new line of specially designed reusable tote bags to support efforts to help the Japanese dealing with the multiple disasters in their time of need. As a member of the Ganbare Nippon Project (Ganbare means “persevere during challenging times” in Japanese), what’Surbag created special tote bags to convey a message of HOPE and STRENGTH. The tote bags for the program were hand-picked by famed designer Sue Wong. This special charity project has been voluntarily launched at participating retail stores throughout Japan and the United States. The original HOPE Nola its-laS-tik tote bag, was created to help

support the New Orleans community after Hurricane Katrina, and became very popular because of its unique awe-inspiring selection of stretchy bouncing eco-friendly bags. The stylish, durable, versatile reusable bag bags are manufactured totally by Hurricane Katrina survivors in New Orleans. The ‘its-laS-tik’ line utilize a special flexible nylon and lycra fabric blend in a wild array of colors and patterns. Unlike any other reusable bag big, small, heavy, light… they stretch, bounce and move with you while you walk, allowing you to hold more yet feel like you are carrying less. They take the shape of their contents and hold everything securely while simultaneously taking the stress off your hands, back, shoulders and knees with their elasticity and flexibility. The bags are washable, reusable, economical and fashionable. The bags spring back into shape when emptied and roll up into a very compact little configuration. 100% of profits from the Hope and Strength Japan effort will be donated to the American Red Cross “Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Fund.” Coral White, the world’s only coral-based toothpaste, is also free of fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). BALANCE:

THE GATE TO POISE AND POWER by Rev. E. Ann Otzelberger

Is it true that in this world the gender of things does not really matter? At least a great number of people take gender into consideration when making plans. When I started my quest to become spiritually enlightened and to acquire knowledge of all things past, present and future, I was not certain where to place the idea of gender. In my first meditation classes, I was taught that the meditation circle must consist of equal numbers of people, male and female. These equal numbers of people should be placed in the circle so that there was male, female, male, female and so it went all around the circle. When there was not enough male or female persons present the circle was carried on and considered to be slightly out of balance. It is not gender or male/female that matters. It is balance. When I started to form a circle for meditation I started to give it more thought and to realize that all things have both of what we know as male and female, yang and yin. This would bring me to understand the Natural Law of Balance, as I could understand that all things must be in balance and harmony. Balance and harmony in our lives will give us the peace we search for. It will make us aware of the beauty of nature around us. All of nature is always in balance. You may say, What about the earth quake that just happened in Japan? This is all part of nature. Nature must search for the balance of all things. When the earth made a shift, it caused the earthquake. We do not always understand everything that happens in nature because it does not happen and bring about the “Pollyanna” results that we want or look for in our lives. The Reverend Charlene Kleinschmidt wrote, balance is “all’s right with the world” exuberant state that we all have vowed at one time or another to always

live in, only to find it disappearing as we allow ourselves to be caught in frustration or the instability of the material world. Every one of us will know ebb and flow in our lives. It is remembering at ebb-tide that the flow will return that keeps our head about us. Then is the time to think of what we really want and need in our lives, and how to keep our lives in balance. Balance and perfection are normal states. The law commands that all actions of any nature between pairs of opposites in nature, or between humans must be equal—balanced. The unbalancing of any situation causes negative reactions. For example, unbalanced marriages can equal divorce; unbalanced business can equal bankruptcy; international imbalance can equal wars; unbalanced chemicals equal explosions, etc. It is by understanding this law that we find the true meaning of equilibrium. There is a counterbalancing effect within this law, and through this effect an even or level state of mind can be achieved. Many Spiritualists are familiar with one aspect of this law, for most are aware of this statement: “Under all circumstances, keep and even mind.” When one really understands this law, the gates to poise and power are opened. Reverend E. Ann Otzelberger is the Founding Pastor of New Vision Spiritualist Center. She is an NSAC Ordained Minister, a Commissioned Spiritualist Healer, a Certified Medium and National Spiritualist Teacher. Reverend Otzelberger is a Trustee on the Board of Directors of the NSAC. Reverend Ann also serves the Morris Pratt Institute as Vice President of their Board of Directors and is on their Education Committee. Please see ad this page.

MASTERS AND CO-CREATORS DREAM THE NEW DREAM! We look around and see evidence of yin, the feminine principle and yang, the masculine principle, all around us. Mountains push up phallic peaks that plunge rushing streams into deep fertile valleys. Birds, insects, frogs and a cacophony of others call to each other, Here I am! I see you! Everywhere “out there” there is evidence of masculine and feminine principles reminding us like mirrors of the same principles within us operating on different levels of consciousness. “Out there,” there is a new buzz in the world of physics that should reinforce many of the old “buzzes” in metaphysics. Mystics have been attributed the ability of being in two places at once along with many other mystical abilities. Recently, scientists have been able to create a visible object that exists in two places at once. This and many other new discoveries in quantum physics should have us questioning our way of viewing the world and what is truly possible. Anything! The more we look at the nature of stuff out there, the more we need to question our classical views and understandings of yin/ yang and their mechanisms of action in creation and within ourselves. The closer we look at stuff out there, we find that it’s made up of the very fabric of space itself. It seems that all stuff is made up of and connected to everything else through nonstuff or space itself. Space, or nothingness, appears to be the only constant, and all of creation is made up of, lives and moves in and eventually dissolves back into this space. Like musical notes, they arrive from, are sustained on top of, and dissolve back into silence. This is important to note because the dream of yin and yang and all of these interplays in all of creation and within us are just that, a world of dreams within us, and exist as just that, dreams and possibilities. The new physics asks us to question everything we ever thought was real about yin and yang and creation, and asks

44

us to focus instead on the dream or consciousness of the field and the space beneath the consciousness that sustains the dream. Since “outside” is a reflection of things inside ourselves, then our very mind stuff, the dreams that color our perception of reality will, like the things in creation outside ourselves, also collapse into space or silence. Mystics point the way to higher states of consciousness achieved by silencing the mind. It seems your frequency tends to increase the more you are able to access this place of spatial silence within that space. From the vantage point of mental silence the world is witnessed as it is, a perfect dream happening in synchronized unity. One learns to surf the various existing dreams by meeting them with an increased awareness of the dream itself and the space that manifests it through the interplay of yin and yang. When we meet the outer world with silent inner spatial grounding, the inertia of the dream you call your life situation doesn’t carry you away like a runaway train as much anymore. Your inner silence collapses the play of yin and yang internally and externally. You see the dream in perfect unity and it outwardly becomes less sticky, more natural. Real mastery and co-creation involve waking up within the dream and deciding to either accept the current dream as it is or to dream a new dream that affects the forces of yin and yang to shift reality internally which ends up manifesting itself externally. As you dive deeper and deeper into the space within you, you will realize that the space connects you to everything out there, including every dream out there. The deeper you go, the more you realize that there is no “other” out there, only space, the one True self. From the depths of this space new dreams will flower that benefit the whole. From the depth of this space you realize there is no “other,” because you are ultimately connected

to everything you sense, dream and perceive. Once your inner silence slows down and stops the inertia of the external dream, yin and yang become balanced internally and this allows you to hold the vision of the new dream vividly in the space within you. Then an external action sets the new dream into motion to interact with the rest of the dreams out there in creation. Co-creation involves dreaming a new dream and watching the forces of yin and yang manifest the dream into creation. Mastery involves dreaming a dream for the benefit of all and letting the forces of yin and yang bring the dream of co-creation into existence through you. BALANCE IN “Both / And” by Joanna Hackley-Davis

There is a way of living in balance, where strength and the ability to succeed independently are balanced by vulnerability and the ability to depend on community. I was raised in a strictly black and white world. Right was right, wrong was wrong, with precious little gray area. If I made a mistake, I was bad; if I did something right, I was good. To give you an idea of what I was dealing with, go through the list below, and check off all the “right” or “good” words. Hidden/Exposed Cold/Hot Downward/Upward Calm/Excited Stable/Elastic Binding/Loosening Moist/Arid Forward/Backward

Dark/Light Still/Moving Earth/Heaven Hard/Soft Sturdy/Flexible Deep/Superficial Static/Rhythmic Few/Many

Maybe you checked all the ones on the right, all the ones on the left, only a few, or most of the words. Are you right? Are

you sure? When I first saw the movie “Fiddler on the Roof,” I could not get my head around Tevye’s assertion, “He’s right, and he’s right, and he’s right, too!” At that point in my growth, I would have believed my list was right, and your list was wrong. Of course, if you had more education than I, then your list would be right, and mine would be wrong. And, exactly what would that solve? I’m still not sure, because right/wrong has evolved into both/ and for me. From my current space, your list and my list are both right. Yours is right for you, and mine is right for me. That’s the very concept of both/and. Life is both black and white and color. I am both powerful and vulnerable, both logical and intuitive, both hard and soft, both calm and excited, both dark and light. Granted, I may not be both at the exact same moment, but my capacity to be is both/ and. It has brought a great deal of balance to my life. As a child, I desperately wanted to be a boy. I thought that boys had everything–more freedom, more fun, more opportunities. Girls had to clean house, take care of babies, cook, and do lots of other things I wasn’t interested in. I became the consummate tomboy, playing football, fighting, climbing trees, and more. As an adult, I came to value myself as a woman and explored the gentler side of myself. In my own way, I explored the both/and. And, if you were curious where the list of words came from, one column is the characteristics of Yin/feminine energies, and the other is Yang/masculine energies. Community/Independence. Both/And. Balance. You can’t possibly do it wrong. Joanna Davis received her Certification as a Life Coach through Coach for Life, the original spirit-based, accredited coach training. Her work in the healing arts began over 30 years ago in massage therapy and continues with certifications in reflexology and hypnosis. She is also experienced in energy healing, tarot and other mystic practices. Please see ad this page.

LIVING TOWERS Breaking the Boundaries HYDROPONIC FARM of Organics We all know that Mother Earth is meant to produce the finest in living foods, but we also know how difficult it can be to find those local, organic, living foods, harvested at the peak of optimum nutrition. At Living Towers Hydroponic Farm in Eustis, Florida we’re taking organic gardening to new levels. We utilize the latest Tower Garden technology–a method of growing plants vertically in food-grade, UV protected pots with a perfect blend of earthbased mineral solution–to produce strong, nutrient-dense food.

by Jan Young

Living Towers Farm is a 2,200 square foot prototype of what the future holds for community and family food production. Science and nature dance in perfect synergy at this full production greenhouse, where you can purchase the absolute best in “beyond organic” produce or learn about how you can “grow your own” right in your own back yard. It is spectacular to behold the giant hanging towers and to see, touch and taste what mother earth intended living foods to be. The plants never touch soil so they do not have to search, or compete, for nutrients, and are never exposed to harmful toxins or pesticides. These living foods are what are required to nourish us both physically and spiritually. Everything we grow here is clean and green! We call it “beyond organic” growing. There is a quiet revolution going on in America that is growing louder by the minute. It’s time to question what vibrant health is and determined by whose standards. Our dietary choices are becoming the driving force for change in the world. One Atharva Veda quote says that “Prayer has been made to Mother Earth that she blesses us with the knowledge required to exploit the treasures of nature but without disturbing the environmental balance.” How true that is at Living Towers Farm. Our purpose is not just to plant seeds to grow healthy vegetables. It’s about planting seeds that empower others to grow healthy individuals and families while leaving the smallest possible carbon footprint. Then together we can feed and nurture healthier, sustainable communities. We have the tools to do so and are happy to share. Together we can change the world! Everything at Living Towers Farm is picked fresh and most produce is sent home with you with roots attached. This live produce will continue to grow in your fridge. Just some of the produce now available is multiple varieties of lettuce including bibb, spring, romaine, along with chard, herbs, strawberries, and more! Our produce varies according to the season. Hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or by appointment. Private tours are available. Living Towers is located at 19621 Lake Lincoln Lane, Eustis, 32736. Call (352)357-6979 or visit http://LivingTowers.com for more information. We look forward to sharing our garden with you!

PASSING GRADES by Oral Nussbaum

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? YOU GOT AN “F?” Last night you spelled every word

to me perfectly, and today, you got an “F?” Are you even trying to spell these words correctly? Are you even thinking about what you are doing when you take your test? You got more than half of them wrong! How would it be if your mother only cooked supper half of the time? If I only went to work half of the time, how would I pay the bills and buy you toys? That spelling test rant occurred in 1992 when my son was in the second grade. We stayed up past his bedtime Thursday night, studying his list of words for the Friday test. He was flawless. He clearly was prepared this time and would do well, or so I thought. That’s why the “F” he brought home Friday afternoon shocked me. Well, it pissed me off mostly. I was so naive back then. I actually believed that by scolding him and drawing parallels between his performance and that of his parents, he would be able to perfectly complete a task that his brain was not wired to do well. I just could not understand why, no matter how hard we studied, he constantly failed tests. He was my son, for Christ’s sake. Why was he not getting straight “A’s” like I planned when he was born? Okay, the epileptic seizures twice a week might be a problem, but come on, at least give me “B’s.” True, his doctors and teachers said he might be a slow learner, but this was unacceptable. How could I validate my genetic code and parenting skills with him carelessly sliding through school getting “F’s?” A “C” at least, please, everyone will think badly of me if he can’t even get a “C.” When I finished ranting about the value of good grades, a berated and deflated little boy ate two cookies in silence, brushed his teeth, and crawled into bed. I issued an emotionless, “Good night, I love you,” which must have seemed to him like a bizarre contradiction to what he had just gone through, then I turned, and left the room.

“DAD,” HE WHIMPERED, “I’M SORRY.” My heart and ego softened a bit, so I walked back to his bed and sat down. My hand did slow gentle circles on his back as he cried into his pillow. “Come on son, what’s the matter?” I asked cautiously, hoping he hadn’t noticed what an ass I had been for the last two hours. “I wanted to tell you something that happened in school today, but you didn’t give me a chance,” he said as he wiped his nose on the sleeve of his pajamas, his favorite pajamas, the ones with the big red S on the front.

52

My son then told me a story that would forever change the way I looked at him and viewed success in general. Through his sniffles and more nose wiping, he told me about a girl in his class. Having discovered head lice on her, the girl’s mother, rather than spend hours combing her long hair with a lice comb, had shaved her head. This was the equivalent of social suicide to a seven year old girl in public school. “Everyone was making fun of her, but I didn’t,” he said proudly. “Then later, at lunch, when I saw her sitting by herself in the corner,” he continued, “she was crying, so I went over and sat by her and told her that her hat was very pretty.” The tumultuous cocktail of emotion that welled up in my heart in that moment, spilled from my eyes in droplets that fell noiselessly onto a big red S. I was so ashamed of myself, so proud of him, so … “You know, I’m not a very good speller either,” I finally managed to say. “Forget about that stupid old test, you just keep being that kind to others, and you’ll be fine. Good night son, I love you,” I repeated, this time with emotion. I walked out of his room and, still a bit dazed by what had just happened, sat down at the kitchen table and wept. My hand picked up a pen, my eyes focused on a blank sheet of paper, and my heart wrote this poem:

THE GENTLEMAN He may not be able to spell as well as some. After all, why can’t K U M, be come? He has trouble reading and doing well in school, but he truly understands “The Golden Rule.” And a kinder heart would be hard for you to find— and it gives me total piece of mind to know; though he’ll sometimes struggle as he unfolds life’s plan, my son will grow to be a gentle man. Seventeen years have passed since head lice, teardrops, and Superman pajamas, and I am happy to report that the poem’s predictions have come true. In a world where shallow judgment and meanness have become the norm, my son has grown into a fine young man. He still can’t spell very well, but if he ever finds you sad and crying, he’ll be quick to tell you how pretty your hat is. Born in Marshallville Ohio, Oral now resides in Winter Springs, Florida. His hobbies of writing and art compliment his never ending quest for spiritual growth. He is co-leader of a local writers group, and organizer of a monthly spiritual discussion group. He has been published in the Dream Flight newsletter in London England, Deaf Digest, and Velocity magazine. He won first place and tied for third place in the Poetry Ensemble of Orlando’s annual poetry contest. Please see both of Oral’s ad, this page.

ACUPUNCTURE GETS RIGHT TO THE

POINT by Ramah Wagner, D.C.

ACUPUNCTURE is one aspect of traditional Chinese medicine that has flourished in China for thousands of years and is widely practiced in Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. Now it is increasingly practiced in the United States as more and more patients and health care professionals are recognizing the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of a variety of health problems. Acupuncture has been used to treat headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel, neck pain and other ailments. Acupuncture is based on the theory that there is energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”) flowing through your body. Qi flows along energy pathways called meridians. The body contains 12 main meridians, or energy highways, that are intricately linked to communicate with every cell in the body. When one of these meridians becomes damaged or blocked it is similar to an accident; also to the build-up behind the wreck, and a lack of flow in front of the wreck. Similarly, in the energy flow of the body there can be imbalances andblockages; excesses or deficiencies in some areas; stagnation in others. Acupuncture reestablishes the normal flow of Qi by inserting fine, sterile needles at various acupuncture points. As in the highway analogy, once the wreck is cleared the normal flow of traffic is returned, and we get on with our lives. At my practice I use electro meridian imaging, which is a diagnostic tool that measures and charts the relative energy flow in the 12 major body meridians. It evaluates the level of energy in each meridian from the left to right side of the body. Therefore, I can more efficiently diagnose imbalances and perform treatment to bring the body into balance. Does acupuncture hurt? This is the most common question that my patients ask, because they associate needles with pain.

Acupuncture needles are about the thickness of a dog’s whisker, so they are virtually painless when inserted. After insertion, I bring the needle to the appropriate depth. Patients then may feel a very unique sensation that can vary from tingling, to heaviness, to warmth, or nothing at all. Each person’s experience is different. One of the great advantages of acupuncture is that, other than an occasional bruise, there are no side effects. Always tell your doctor if you are using alternative therapy or if you are thinking about combining alternative therapy with your conventional medical treatment. It may not be safe to forgo your conventional treatment and rely only on an alternative therapy. Dr. Ramah J. Wagner is a third generation alternative health doctor. She graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College in Iowa, where chiropractic was first discovered in 1895. Her clinic is located outside Orlando, Florida, where she works with cutting edge technology in the alternative healing arts – including chiropractic, specific nutrition, detoxification of heavy metals, and acupuncture. Dr. Ramah – as her patients and friends call her – is an internationally recognized author and nationally known speaker. She focuses on the belief that content energy is the key to creating an amazing life. In her recent book, The Health of Business – How to balance Your Life For Greater Returns, she shares colorful stories and powerful healing methods to achieve a larger energy field. Her keen ability to ready energy has recently been captured in her art exhibition called “Portraits” that depicts in line and color each subject’s energy field. the word on books >>>>>>>>>> How to Be Compassionate by His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a handbook for creating inner peace and a happier world. In the bestselling tradition of How to Practice, the latest book by the Dalai Lama takes Buddhist teachings dating back over a thousand years and makes them profoundly relevant to the lives we lead today. He reveals that the surest path to true happiness is not to be found in the fulfillment of our own needs nd desires above all else, but rather in being intimately concerned with the welfare of others. He explores the link between individual action and global change, and serves as a guide to making small, personal changes that can have a ripple effect around the world. In this inspiring work, the Dalai Lama offers meditations for creating healthier, enduring relationships, while sharing personal anecdotes from his experience as a student, a mediator and a political figure that illustrate the important role compassion has played in his own life. When Vimala McClure became a mom, she quickly realized that everything she had learned about spirituality was being put to the test. In order to give her children the respect, acceptance, encouragement, boundaries, and unconditional love that they needed, she had to learn about those things for herself. Mothering became her spiritual practice. “As my children grew our relationships provided so much growth for me,” writes McClure. “Children are mirrors; they will always show you exactly what is going on inside of you. Each phase of their growth is an opportunity to heal your own pain, to go deeper inside yourself and become more fully human.” When McClure began studying the ancient Chinese wisdom of the Tao Te Ching, she recognized how its wisdom, which was originally intended for warriors and political leaders, spoke directly to the spiritual bond between mother and child. That’s how her timeless book The Tao of Motherhood was born twenty years ago. The book is beautifully illustrated with line drawings commissioned especially for the new 20th Anniversary edition.

SUGGESTED SELECTIONS

The book’s essays, which are based on the teachings of Lao Tzu, put insight and perspective within easy reach of those tending to newborns, toddlers, teens, and adult children alike. is nourished more than the child who is constantly fussed and chattered over.” Legendary Ironman Mark Allen and world-renowned shaman Brant Secunda join forces in their first book together. In it, they show you how to become truly fit from the inside out and take your life to the next level. Whether you’re training for an athletic event or just want to improve the quality of your life and how you feel about yourself, Fit Soul, Fit Body is about everything that makes you YOU. Fitness goes far beyond how long it takes to walk or run a mile. When you’re stressed out, emotionally drained, overworked, overweight, and underappreciative of your physical body, you can’t get much of anything accomplished—at work, at home, on the race track, wherever and in whichever capacity. Put simply, when you’re spiritually unfit, life is a greater challenge. That mythical “balance” you’ve always dreamed of achieving us just that—a myth. But not any more. Mark Allen was one of the top triathletes in the world but struggled to overcome the barriers that were preventing him from winning the grueling Ironman World Championship Triathlon Kona, Hawaii. Then he began studying with Brant Secunda, healer and teacher in the Huichol Indian tradition of Mexico. Brant is the only Westerner to have completed a 12-year apprenticeship with Don José Matsuwa, the revered Huichol Indian shaman who lived a vibrant, happy life to 110 years old. Brant taught Mark the spiritual and healing exercises that allowed him to integrate his physical and psychological fitness. Mark went on to win a never-before-achieved six Ironman World Championships in a row, and was eventually dubbed, “The World’s Fittest Man” by Outside magazine. Chock full of step-by-step exercises and practical techniques anyone can use, the book also reveals engrossing and humorous tales: of Mark’s quest to be the top triathlete in the world, and Brant’s journey from New Jersey to Mexico, where he lived with legendary Huichol Shaman Don José Matsuwa.

Encountering a Rare Soul with a Precious Message BY ROB CECIL It was Pune, India in the early 1990s. The blanket of heat and the exotic fragrances of the busy temple drew me inside. Amidst the joyous chaos of a thousand pilgrims sat Radhanath Swami. As he glanced up, my eyes meeting his, his face lit up like he was recognizing a lifelong friend. This fascinating and multifaceted individual who I had only heard about made me feel at ease immediately. That night I heard him speak to the crowd about life’s dearest treasures, answering our skepticism and genuine queries with equal grace. As I heard him speak and learned of his mission in life. I was captivated by how this person from my own United States came to so completely exemplify all that is genuine in the ancient mysticism of India. I learned that Radhanath Swami is at once an explorer of the globe and a navigator of the deepest meditations of the heart. He is both a self-controlled and consummate master of bhakti, the yoga of devotion, and a humble student whose palms are always folded in respect for others. Starting his spiritual search from the suburbs of the states in the turbulent 1960s, his profound yearnings for the source of all love brought him astounding, sometimes frightening, deeply beautiful, and always enlightening adventures. He, like many other seekers, set out for the mystical East to quench that deepest of thirsts. His life’s aim became an unstoppable longing to uncover the purpose of human life and the source of all happiness. He chronicles this enthralling voyage in his new book, The Journey Home: An Autobiography of an American Swami. As I read this exciting narrative, I realized that this was not about just one man, but was the story of the soul’s immortal search for perfection. As he donned the simple clothes of the saints and sadhus, he trekked through the Himalayan regions, encountering

powerful mystics, saints and yogis. Imbibing their principles of determination, renunciation, and devotion, he gradually came down from the legendary mountain range and made his way back to the civilized world. Even the sacred waters of the Mother Ganges spoke to the pure heart of this seeker as he meditated for a month

Mumbai every day. The Bhaktivedanta Hospital blends state of the art care with a holistic multi-disciplinary approach as does the Barsana, India eye-camp which has treated thousands of poverty-stricken patients suffering from cataracts. on a rock in the middle of the giant river. Learning from all, he encountered individuals as diverse as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, mother Theresa, the Dalai Lama, Ram Dass, and Srila Prabhupada, founder of the Hare Krishna Movement. Like a swan that is said to be able to extract milk from water, this young seeker was able to transcend the confusion caused by disparate spiritual paths and gain the vision of the unity in the diversity of the great spiritual pursuits.

lum to accompany excellence in academics. Eco-projects such as the Govardhana EcoVillage and the Venu Madhuri rural development program seek to implement culturally and environmentally appropriate technologies and agricultural practices. Self sufficiency, cottage industry, and land custodianship help rural communities regain bountiful production and sense of empowerment.

Radhanath Swami has established a number of initiatives in India combining sorely needed aid and resources with a wholesome spiritual health program. The Midday Meal Program serves 200,000 healthy meals to the school children of

Whether you are attracted to the purity and simplicity of Radhanath Swami’s personal character, his philanthropic projects, or intrigued by his book, The Journey Home, I would love for you to meet him in Gainesville on the May 24.
