SNOWBOARDS

bastard starts off in 1994 as the first italian snowboard company entirely dedicated to freestyle and freeride. The first line consisted in only two boards and a tiny clothing selection, expanding in the years to follow, especially for the clothing. Throughout the years we kept our production in Italy, although the competitors were becoming more aggressive in terms of price, especially by using factories located in eastern Europe, Africa or Asia. There are snowboarders that may care to know that the money they paid for their board was actually used to buy the best materials and not to finance expensive ad campaigns. b a s t a rd • Fall Winter 2013 - 14

And some other also care to know that there still is a small factory outside of Milan, that manufactures boards using the latest technologies, with guaranteed precision and uniformity that up until a few years ago were only achievable with equipment dedicated for serial productions. Topping it off with the craftsmanship and a meticulous approach to production we are able to obtain a superior non industrial type of product. The type of snowboarder that appreciates all this is who we address to, because that’s exactly how we are. − Max Bonassi−

Pietro Sedda If you are into the tattoo scene the name Pietro Sedda will sound familiar. Nowadays, permanent skin ink has been accepted and mainstreamed. This, however, doesn’t affect Pietro Sedda: he’s an artist by nature, only guilty of having chosen ink and skin as his tools to express his personal vision. We asked him to develop a graphic of one of our boards and the result is what you see in the following page. Let’s have Pietro tell us his own story though.

When I was a child I didn’t think I would become a tattoo artist or the like. I liked best to daydream while listening to my aunts chattering in the living room. I found their chatter re-creative. I have never wanted to develop this talent, it all happened by chance, with a help from some friends. When I was thirty, in 1999, I started tattooing. Today I still not consider myself a tattooist: I only put into practice the technical and creative skills I have developed over time. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts between the eighties and the nineties in the “Milan to sniff”, I have been mainly working as a visual artist, but little by little the world of interest gravitating around contemporary art brought me far away from the establishment. So, today I fix themes and schedules myself.

As time passed and I became experienced, my entire background and my interest melt with my profession as a tattoo artist, with what I am and the way I create my works. I was born in 1969 in a magical land, Sardinia. In order to celebrate the event my father bought a beautiful washing machine with a super spindryer as a present for my mother. Maybe I found my inspiration “by chance” even in such things: an object, a movie, a dress, a journey, a piece of design, or an image found on the internet. I love traveling in order to seize what happens around me: colors, smells, faces… and so, traveling and traveling around the world I came back to Milan, that is still “to sniff”, and here I found My Saint Mariner.

Construction technique Our snowboards are handmade, as they used to be back in the day, but with that little bit of technology that doesn’t ruin the party. We use high quality materials, very expensive and sometimes hard to find. Although our suppliers may hate us for how much we obsess on little details and perfection, we are indeed our first customers and that is why we demand top quality products. Craftsmanship, industrial precision and design by snowboarders! This is basically our concept for snowboards. A small lab near our offices, where decades of experience and hard manual labor are mixed with modern CNC machines, so that our nerdy snowboarder expectations can be met.

Deep in snow... Only if you’ve been deep in the snow up to the neck you can really understand the necessary features for good outerwear. That’s the reason why the designers of the bastard outerwear line have to be snowboarders first. We believe that one can design a good product only if he’s able to test it himself. And we’ve been thinking so since nineteenninetyfour#.

Todd Bratrud Todd Bratrud is an illustrator and artist born in 1975 in Crookston, Minnesota. He is the owner and creator of Send Help skateboards. He currently lives in Grand Forks Minnesota. He has been the art director at Consolidated Skateboards for many years. He has created hundreds of skateboard graphics for many of the most important skateboard companies in the world. He is also an illustrator and blogger for The Skateboard Mag. We met Todd in Italy in April 2012 when we hosted “The Art of Todd Bratrud”, his artshow and european book premiere. It was love at first sight. Answers Todd Bratrud Hi Todd, welcome to the bastard CataZine! Since it’s your first appearance, can you please introduce yourself to the readers? Hi! My name is Todd Bratrud, I live in Northern North Dakota, the most northern point in the middle of the United States, just south of Canada. I make “art” with skateboarding in mind. I’ve been making art for skateboarding since 1996, this is all I do and all I want to do. Ever. An obvious question: how did you start drawing? Same as all children, but my parents just encouraged the creative side of things so I just kinda kept with the drawing when most kids moved to sports and social activities.

31

When and how drawing has start to become your job? Mid 1990s. I think that just working normal crummy jobs always made me daydream about being able to make art for a living, so I started looking for any opportunity to get paid to draw something, although easier said than done. A lot of people into skateboard art consider you as an idol, do you like it or hate it? A little of both. In some ways i don’t really feel deserving of anything like that as this is all I know how b a s t a rd • Fall Winter 2013 - 14

to do and what I would be doing wether people were paying attention or not. While at the same time it’s really nice to be able to get some love for things that i have spent days and hours working on. It goes both ways, I guess. You are universally known for you crazy ideas. How can your mind give birth to such insane visions? Overactive imagination to a fault. Did your drawing style evolve throughout your career or has it been the same since the beginning?

33

And how about your themes (plump girls, hipster cartoons...)? I think I kinda still like most of the same stuff I have always been into, naturally I want to be able to bring things to life the way I see them in my head and i think the longer you work at something, you are naturally going to refine what you do and grow. Ideas still come from the same point of view, I just might have a different way of going about things as time passes. Free inspiration or daily job? Could you describe us your way of working? A little of both, I “work” daily but it’s usually pretty wide open to get into whatever either needs to be finished or whatever I am in the mood to work on… always a few projects in the wings. Green and purple are often the prominent colors in your work, what’s the story behind? No real story at all, my favorite color is pink so it’s defi nitely not about favorite colors. I think I just like the combination of green and purple, that just looks nice! How did you get involved with the skateboard industry? Lots of drawing. Lots of right place at the right time. When I got in, it was next to impossible to do art in skateboarding, I just worked hard and kept in contact with the brands I was into. You are well-known in the skateboarding community but you are also very popular in the sneaker community. How did you start getting involved with the sneaker’s world? I think me working with Nike is the only reason the sneaker world gives a crap. I thoroughly enjoy designing that stuff, so I ran nuts with it once I got the opportunity. As far as my involvement, a lot of

my good friends in the skateboarding industry work at Nike, if that were not the case I wouldn’t be doing shoes at all, I’m sure. You have worked for a lot of skateboard companies and in a lot of projects. The most beautiful experience? All projects have their high and low points, some just have higher “highs” than normal, usually when travel is involved is when it gets interesting! As far as my experience creating, thats always different as well. All brands will naturally have their own vision and their own way of doing things, just a different path to the same end for the most part, it’s all beautiful! We know you are into beautiful girls… What else inspires you? Beautiful girls! I like beautiful girls, all different kinds of beautiful girls. Life in general inspires me, nature, skateboarding. You grew up in a small town. How did this play an influence on you? I wouldn’t say it influenced me, it just set me up to be able to spend massive amounts of time alone… which in the long run is what is needed to. You ‘ve been in Italy for a solo exhibition last spring, how did you get in here? Did a show with you guys for my book, “iHate the art of Todd Bratrud”, came out with Winston Tseng (Enjoi Skateboards) and my friend Horsey, hung some art, made some art, painted some walls, skateboarded all over the city… was a dreamy trip. Let’s do it again!! Plans for the future? SEND HELP! INDIPENDENCE We share a lot with Rough Snowboards, we are both italian, we are both a snowboard company, we are small but we tend to think big, but the most important thing that we have in common is that we deeply believe in the Do It Yourself philosophy. So we decided to start a Rough-bastard 100% DIY collection. The result is in the following pages.

UNITED When we started talking about the collabo between bastard and Rough, the first product we decided to do was a snowboard. And the first artist we decided to call was Todd Bratrud. This board represents Todd’s vision of independence and freedom. Anything else? oh yes... the United is made by Rough with the original construction that makes snowboarding easier. We have been producing the Cargo pants for 15 years. Overtime, we mastered and refined the details and the fit by testing it on skateboarders, bmxers, bikers, hikers, black blocks, protesters, businessmen and hippies. From skateboarding on concrete to hiking in the woods, the bastard Cargo has proven itself and passed all conceivable comfort and durability tests. Besides being thought out for enhancing mobility, it is made with high quality ripstop cotton. The basic principle of ripstop cotton is to insert a thicker and stronger cotton yarn every 6mm, so that, in case of tearing, the cut cannot expand. This weaving technique makes the product stronger, enhancing durability without giving up an inch on softness and comfort. We dare you to find a better Cargo than ours, and if you do, our advice is... buy it!

Raw denim, as opposed to washed denim, is a denim fabric that is not washed after being dyed during its production. Over time, denim will generally fade, which is often considered desirable. During the process of wear, it is typical to see fading on areas that generally receive the most stress, which includes the upper thighs (whiskers), the ankles (stacks) and behind the knees (honey combs). After being crafted into an article of clothing, most denim is washed to make it softer and to reduce or eliminate shrinkage, which could cause an item to not fit after the owner washes it. In addition to being washed, non-dry denim is sometimes artificially “distressed to produce a worn look. Much of the appeal of factory distressed denim is that it looks similar to dry denim that has, with time, faded. With dry denim, however, such fading is affected by the body of the person who wears the jeans and the activities of his/her daily life. This creates what many enthusiasts feel to be a more natural, unique look than distressed denim. To facilitate the natural distressing process, some wearers of dry denim will often abstain from washing their jeans for more than six months, though it is not a necessity for fading.
