Ciao Nick, tell us something about you, and how your passion for snowboarding started. Growing up outside of San Francisco during the mid 90’s I was gripped by Northern California skate culture. My eccentric zest for action sports and life was only propelled by my parent’s passion for the mountains, specifically Lake Tahoe. Naturally as soon as I was exposed to snowboarding, my skate roots and outdoor active lifestyle collided and I found my true calling. I quickly adopted snowboard lifestyle and clung to the culture. What was the turning point for your career? Instantaneously after my first time ripping and dipping down the mountain, I was hell bent on two life dreams, a professional snowboard career and University education. The journey to capture my dreams has span-

ned the timeline of my life and I went through many stages which developed and refined me physically, mentally and spiritually. Did you ever regret this choice? Through snowboarding I have lived, loved and learned much about life. Life is such a blessing and whether snowboarding, school, or anyone’s personal pursuits it imperative to foster the gift. Snowboarding has allowed me to experience Gods creation through all senses. Now fully flared for Jesus Christ and my life radically changed by him, my snowboarding has taken on new shape and form. Just as we see in unique urban settings and vastly creative mountain scapes, the world is a snowboarding heaven with no bounds. How do Northwave and Drake help your snowboarding expression?

What is because of my desire to reflect creation, I need boots and bindings that will support my riding style that seeks to inspire, innovate and create. The beauty of snowboarding is that we get to create what our imagination can visualize. That’s why my boot and binding combination is crucial for my snowboard reality. Without Northwave and Drake that allows this, my snowboarding wouldn’t be possible. Through this process, my hope is to inspire action sports and youth culture. All the brands I work with have a shared reckless abandon for snowboarding and a mission to live in exhilaration. More than anything and simply put, I am thankful for the talents and work ethic that I have been blessed with, alongside the amazing people I have been afforded to work with and desire to create a modern day renaissance in snowboard culture!

Ciao Antti, tell us something about you and how your passion for snowboarding started. I’m Antti Autti from Rovaniemi, Finland and have been snowboarding since 1995. Growing up in the Arctic Circle, you are surrounded by nature and one of the first things I did when I started snowboarding was riding around the trees. Local resorts did not have good jumps or pipes, so my buddies and I would go out of bounds and build our own. Every weekend however, we got the chance to go and ride at a bigger resort that had jumps and a pipe built. It was from then on that I found my love of riding the pipe. During the week I would ride out of bounds at home and then at weekends, hit the pipe. With that combination, I found myself riding both aspects of snowboarding equally, until I started to do competitions.

I FELT THAT I HAD A STRONG CALLING INTO THE REAL MOUNTAiNS.

How was the impact with a competitive environment? I’ve never had a problem with the pressure or a crowd, so I was basically just shredding for myself during every contest and enjoying it. I suddenly found myself winning contests such as X-Games, Toyota Big Air and World Champs…it was all time! You got everything from these contests. And then you decided to leave competitions. Why? After doing contests for so long I felt that I had only seen a small fraction of things snowboarding was able to offer. Traveling from contest to contest season after season didn’t let me evolve as a snowboarder the way I wanted. Through those rare moments riding powder outside the parks and pipes I found the love for natural terrain. I felt that I had a strong calling into the real mountains. It really felt like
I just wanted to get back to the roots and be this young kid who grew up riding in the trees! Wow! But you had the fame, prizes… what was the crucial moment when you realized that competitions limited your riding expression? Fate came into game in 2010; I was injured while I was preparing for the Vancouver Olympics. A two-month period off the slopes gave me time to think what I wanted from snowboarding. Luckily at the start of the season I had established Anttisworld.com to showcase my life as a pro rider through blog posts, photos and online videos. The channel was in place and it was the perfect timing to announce a partial retirement from the competition scene and focus my talent and determination on becoming a better all round snowboarder.

The very first thing that comes to my mind is when we entered in the RV for the first time and only saw 2 beds and 4 seats. There were 6 people in the crew, not mentionning all the boardbags etc. But then the owner looked at us and said the RV is only for 4 people… As we were not allowed to drive around like this we were very concerned about the Swiss border. They are not known for being nice and mellow, specially with snowboarders so we started driving in really Small villages at night, trying to catch a very Small border where we were sure not meet any angry customs officer. For a while we really felt like some Mexicans trying to pass the American border, hidden in the back of the RV. Or maybe it’s when we drove all the way down from the mountain with smooth summer tires on a crazy icy road with 50cm of fresh snow… Age: 17

Hey Roli, how are? What are you up these days? Hey! I’m very good thanks! You know school just started and is already pretty busy, but I’m in preparation for the season and I’m really looking forward to shred again! Please introduce yourself. My name is Roland Hörtnagl, I’m 17 years old and I’m from Innsbruck, Austria. When did you start snowboarding? The first time I stood on a board was 2006 and I’m riding in park since 2008. Where do you usually go snowboarding? It’s pretty different, in Fall I mostly spend my time in Hintertux and in Winter I prefer the Seegrube in Innsbruck, because it’s pretty close to me and has a pretty fun park. It’s also a freeride paradise. I also like Mayrhofen, due to the setup of the park is pretty sick and you can do a high amount of runs, because the lift is short and fast! And the pro kickerline is just amazing. What kind of school are you going? I’m attending a school that specialized on winter sport, which is called “Schigymnasium Stams”.

How do you like it? Are you the only snowboarder? I really like it, because the institution is organized very well and there are a lot of opportunities to get fit for the winter. I have a coach there who’s specialized in snowboarding, who drives with me to my contests and photo shoots. The last three years I’ve been the only freestyle snowboarder in school, but now there are 5 other Dudes. We really push ourselves in normal and snowboard training.
Are you stoked to be on the Drake and Northwave team? I’m super stoked to be on the team, I really like the boards, bindings and boots. Everything is really sick and comfortable to ride!
What do you do on your free time? In my free time I’m doing slacklining and sometimes I try to skate, but this doesn’t have a good end. What are your parents thinking about snowboarding? My parents like snowboarding, even if they don’t do it. They do what they can to support me with it and I really appreciate this! What are your plans for this winter? My plans are to improve my trick skills and to ride a lot of contests national and for sure in-
What are your goals for the season? I want to learn as many new tricks as I’m able to and to have good results at the BEO’s and the O’neill evolutions. Of course I want to have fun and hope that I don’t have any injury. Which terrain do you like to ride? I like to ride kickers and rails, but when there’s pow somewhere I would just shred pow. Would you like to thank anyone? At first I really want to my family, because they support me financial and do everything that I’m able to live my dream of snowboarding. Hey Matt you’ve been shooting pics for a long time now! What makes a good photo, subject, composition, light? Yes indeed, I started shooting almost 10 years ago. A good photo is a personal feeling and I really believe there are no rules. Yes a good photo can be sharp, nicely framed, rightly exposed, but unfortunately it’s not always enough because a good photo can be also blurry, unsharp and overexposed at the same time. To me, a good photo is probably something that you will remember. Every day you can see thousands of photos on the internet good and bad! But at the end, how many photographies do you remember? Maybe 1 or 2 maximum, right? Then if you remember it, I would say that is a good photo! Maybe not for me, maybe not for your friends. Just for you! Usually everyone will remember a photo that is original, creative, standing out from the mass and certainly that has been made with LOVE and HARD WORK! But not always... Again there are no rules. Try to describe you style of photography, what represents you the most? I was lucky enough to discover photography during an analog era and I learnt how to work and develop films in a darkroom etc. Not so long after, the digital era arrived to the mass and then I had to learn again another side of photography with all those new digital tools. At the end, of course it’s just photography but the transition was not easy for everyone and I was at the right age to absorb everything I could and was able to have one foot in each world. That being said I believe my style is a mix between the old and the new techniques, but I definitely feel like more a hand crafter than a digital master. I like to create things using chemical products and diffe-
rent papers rather than using Photoshop Tools. Regarding the style I believe it’s important to not have just one and make it evolve with years of experiences. If you could only choose one camera, which would it be? I would keep my first camera, borrowed from my parents, a NIKON FM2 with a 50mm 1.8 lens. Small, easy to carry, all manual and unbreakable! The Northawave/Drake camp out tour must have been pretty crazy! What’s the memory that sticks out the most?

Did you know all the riders on the tour? What was your impression on them? I’ve known Alvaro, « the guy in charge » for a very long time and Victor since he was a little kid, even if we never really spent too much time together in the mountains before. I just met Antti this summer in New Zealand and that was the first time I met Nick. Well I have to say it’s a solid crew! Each of them have their own personality and style of riding which create a good diversity. They are all experienced riders and work hard to get the shots! Of course being on the road for a long period in such a tiny space can be hard sometimes but there’s nothing bad I can say about them, even if I’m french, I would love to give them some sh#t but really I can’t find anything. What’s your favourite photo from the tour and why? This big powder spray from Alvaro is one of my favorites. You can see it was a big explosion cause he is breathing straight when he gets out. I like the way he is getting out of the frame, full speed, into my direction. Lots of energy, sunny day, lots of fresh snow and all that in the middle of october. Not too bad for the beginning of the winter!

Keep your back leg kicked out and style it as you prefer!

When you try a backside lipslide (backlip) you first need to learn how to do a frontside boardslide. Once you have the fronside boardslide “on lock” you can start trying some backside 50-50. Once you have those two tricks you can mix them together and do a nice backside lipslide.

First you need to find out the right speed for the feature you choose to ride. When you approach the rail remember to be parallel to it. On the kicker make a nice ollie in order to come over the rail with your board. Once you are above the rail twist your lower body 90 degrees. After that make sure you land flat base on the rail.

Once you are on the rail you can start spotting the landing. Keep your back leg kicked out and style it as you prefer. Once you get to the end of the rail pop out of it and land on your frontside edge, stomp, and ride away. Once you got it you can try some combinations! Enjoy!

Nothwave and Drake’s “Camp Out” Tour 2012 was a Euro hallucinogen trip! The drug reference was nothing less than a metaphor to describe the excess that the team went through. We may all have a screw loose for attempting a tour like this, but our bindings were eager and we left the European Alps front more worn-out than ever! This unique experience has bonded the new team, Antti Autti, Victor De Le Rue, Nick Visconti and Alvaro Vogel tighter than SuperGlue! We travelled from the Alps from east to the west, stopping off at the best glaciers

in Europe. Hintertux offered a perfect park with super nice kickers and tons of fun jibs, Saas Fee had a perfect pipe and side hits galore whilst Les2 Alpes was just a unique experience; a private glacier session just for the team! With a perfect groomed jibpark, we couldn’t have ended the tour in a better way. A big shout out to everyone who helped us along the way… friends with snowchains just when you need them, plugs for our battery chargers, showers for our dirty bodies and warm coffee for our souls… without you all this would not have been possible.

These boards are horizontally level, with a flat base that touches the floor even at the centre. Drake’s own way of creating reverse camber over the board. Delivered from the Smiley concept, it offers a reverse free camber shape creating a constant arch from tip to tail which comes in 6mm higher when compared to a regular snowboard. Boards ride smoother, minimizing edge catching on take offs and landings, allowing great nose and tail presses and taking sensation to a whole new level. Directional Twin
Tip and tail area on these boards are the same width. Tail is usually shorter than the tip and the inserts are slightly offset toward the tail of the board.
Directional
The tip of a directional snowboard is different from its tail. The tail is usually narrower, shorter, and flatter that the tip of the board. Stance is offset toward the tail of the board. These boards are primarily meant to be ridden in one direction.
Extra Features
Skate Camber
Son of the Variocamber technology, but much more jib oriented. It comes with a flat area between the feet, perfect for hitting the rails and sliding the boxes, but without losing the pop because of the two cambers outside of the inserts. It becomes flat again to be perfect for presses and leave the board forgiving.

Blunt
This particular shape improves overall control of the board by keeping the full contact length, but shrinking the actual board size. The shape comes with a straight cut on the tip and tail areas, which makes the board shorter than a regular board. This reduces weight and improves rotation. The end result is a lightweight, playful board, ideal for freestyle maneuvers but great in all other types of terrain.

This is because the graphite reduces the static electricity and the accumulation of dirt on the inside, owing regard to its excellent capability as an electrical conductor.
Sintra 8000

SUPER LACE SL
A Speed Lacing System that allows the closure of two different boot areas, the quarter part and the collar part, in order to allow you to select the perfect feeling on each part and improve comfort and foot stability. Your boot will be closed quickly and will stay tight and perform all day.
540° HEEL RETENTION SYSTEM
The boot laces pass through pre-curved lace loops which helps the lace minimize its friction. When the laces are pulled to close the boot, they are at the same time pulling the webbings where the lace loops are linked. In this way the webbings shrink around the ankle, increasing heel stability. They can do this operation in a perfect way thanks to the fact that the webbing is passing through a hole from the side of the boot directing the pressure of closure all over the ankle area. The more the lace is pulled the more power will be transferred in the ankle area, increasing the heel retention performance and foot stability.
360° HEEL HOLD SYSTEM
A complete wrap of the ankle… anchored to the heel of the boot, laces run through a brass or nylon loop to wrap around the heel to lock the ankle in place.
