Snowboarding is ever evolving. With so many styles and scenes, it has always been about seeking, enjoying and progressing your own individual path. Recently there has been a convergence of styles and energy towards the absolute beginnings of our sport that was grounded in the idea of surfing on snow. This clean, flowing riding style suddenly feels fresh amongst the blur of tricks and the push to take it further. A natural return to the basic motions of snowboarding is gaining momentum and anyone can do it. You don’t need big mountains or fresh powder. By riding creatively and visualizing your terrain in a new light, you and your crew will seek and enjoy more than ever before. This is our current vision for snowboarding and in this year’s collection you will see a wide offering that let riders get after it in their own way. But in the end everything we do is about this basic feeling of making turns, getting some air and that curious exploration of the day on snow with friends.

Looking back, this has happened with twin-tips and rocker just to name a few. Our Seek & Enjoy brand position is structured to support and advance our sport towards these market waves. By promoting the idea of seeking your own style and supporting all types of riding we encourage riders to push their own style and discover new PATHS. To give this idea more focus and highlight styles that we see gaining momentum we have created five Paths. Each path defines a rider profile that comes complete with a personality, color pallet, terrain and riding style. From this follows a product offering and marketing plan that shows how we support that path. Some paths are more forward looking, some more fundamental, but all are equal.

VOLUME SHIFT
THE NE W WAV E O F S N OWB OA R D S T Y LE & D E S I G N K2 has been at the forefront of the recent shape revolution and this year we are offering more exotic shapes than ever. After years of experimenting, riding and refining different shapes a central idea has surfaced. The driving design idea of this new shaping energy is volume. Now we know technically it is surface area that we are playing with but the word volume seems to sum it up more intuitively. It is a close cousin to the volume surfboard shapers play with in their boards. By shifting the volume around your feet the board glides and interacts with the snow in brand new ways. THE DESIGN STORY This begins with opening your mind to new ideas about width under foot. We have moved volume from the ends of a traditional board and squashed it down under foot where it can be better controlled. This makes a wider, shorter design that maintains the same float and stability of a traditional board, but increases maneuverability. Suddenly a whole new spectrum, feel, and ways of riding open up. It’s more surfy, soulfully fluid and carvey. You have to try it to believe it and once you do you will look at terrain and your riding differently, adding depth to the experience.

Increasing the width under foot is one of the most impactful variables in shape design. For years riders have tied the width of their board to the size of their feet. By letting go of that convention a whole new array of board behavior opens up. From the traditional narrow designs that responds quick to super wide boards that allow you to float fast and carve deeper than you ever imagined. Forget what you thought about width and try something new. The stability and surf-like turning is something that is only beginning to be discovered. It will change your riding forever.

This new view of width directly impacts length. By shrinking the length as you go wider the quickness of a board stays the same. Imagine squashing a board shape made of play-doh. It gets wider as you shorten it. This is effectively keeping the volume the same, just moving it under feet where you can push it around with less effort. It also gives you stability. So tuning the length along with the width results in super stable yet vastly more maneuverable boards.

It all started with the Happy Hour five years ago. We made a new tip and tail shape that was not a functional play. It was just for fun. Some claimed to feel a difference on how that board tracks and behaves in powder. From this we started playing and learning how these small changes in the tip and tail shape effect the way a board moves through snow and also how it releases it in the tail. It is this fine tuning that makes some of these radical shapes possible. It steers the board in the snow setting it into position for the sidecut outline to take over and perform the turn. Its a fun little detail that makes a big difference, but also just gets you stoked. Sometimes if a board just looks fun it will be.

Another way we play with volume is by setting more of it in front of you than behind. This greatly effects how the sidecut behaves and how the board floats. By tuning in the angle of float and shifting volume to the tip you can delete the back leg burn of a powder day. Instead you float even footed and plane on the snow rather than plow through it. When centered and balanced you are ready to move on your board and adjust as you encounter terrain. This sets you on top and centered so you are positioned down the fall line and charging the fun.
CONTINUOUS ROCKER FUNCTION By tweaking the ends of our boards we have taken the industry leading Baseline technology to the next level. By extending the Baseline rocker all the way out to the absolute ends of the board, new ride-able surface is unlocked, giving you a bigger, more stable platform to press, float and land on.
