PRIVATECLUBS

We create club environments that encourage members and guests to feel not just accommodated, but welcomed; and that surpass their expectations. We understand that members want to sense a level of belonging, value, and richness, as well as comfort and familiarity.

The clubs and hospitality environments we design integrate the qualities expected by members; allowing them to settle in and feel comfortable. We know substantial activity is occurring behind the scenes, allowing you to provide seemingly effortless service and unmatched accommodation. We understand the business of leisure and create designs that allow the pulse to slow, spirit to recharge, and ignite the desire to return.

TRENDS

Historically viewed as playgrounds for the wealthy, today’s city club has evolved to become an urban oasis that appeals to a broad demographic and reflects the resurgence of cities, changing technology, and shifts in how business is conducted. City clubs have evolved to embrace a changing landscape and entice increasingly younger members. Décor is transitional; not so trendy as to be immediately outdated, but no longer the formal, traditional style that had become their hallmark.

That décor also provides more variety and options for dedicated work spaces that have member-facing technology—a place to work between meetings in the city. But it’s not just about work, it’s also about play; city clubs also feature more media areas within the casual seating areas and large screen televisions in demand from younger members.

URBANOASIS

TRENDS

6 | private clubs

Each club is a unique environment with its own story— communicating the heritage, culture, and community of the club. Defining the club identity is vital. Whether it’s in wine country, a growing suburban area, or a bustling urban center; the identity guides the design to create a unique environment that is distinctive, fresh, and current.

Within each club, areas are programmed to further the story: a traditional pub, an elegant dining room, or a bar focused on sports of names for a famous former member; the club must cater to the interests and ideals of its membership.

STORYTELLING

TRENDS

Club managers have realized that the best way to turn around membership demand and golfer participation at their clubs is to invest in the non-golf aspects of the membership experience. As a response to a shift in members’ interests and values; health, fitness, wellness, and more inclusive recreation will be the identifying club characteristics.

Walking a golf course at the turn of the 20th century was exercise; spending an hour in the fitness center or participating in a Power Flow Yoga class is increasingly the norm. Clubs are incorporating exercise options as well as functional training like TRX, TPI, Muscle Activation Therapy (MAT) as well as spa, nutrition, joint rehab, physical therapy, and athletic and sport-specific training.

DOMINION CLUB

Prior to a renovation led by Architecture, Inc. the interiors of the Dominion Club were very traditional, with heavy millwork and brass accents. To bring the club up to modern standards while respecting its traditional heritage, the renovation focused on an update to finishes, fixtures, and furniture in 9,980 sf of the 23,000 sf club on both levels. Centered on a large ceremonial rotunda used for event space, the renovation expanded available space by removing very large encasements on the columns on the lower level, freeing up considerable floor space. Finishes on the sweeping stair were refreshed by replacing brass fixtures, installing new carpet, and updating finishes throughout.

On the first floor, the main dining area was completely renovated to make it more flexible for multiple dining options. A variety of seating including a communal table and banquets help to define spaces while keeping the space open. Bright finishes, modern light fixtures, and nostalgic wall graphics helped to update the space while keeping it rooted in tradition. Adjacent restrooms were re-configured to allow direct access to the dining room. The dining room is now open to a large new covered patio with multiple fire pits, ceiling fans, and casual seating.

KNOLLWOOD COUNTRY CLUB

Established in 1894 as one of the oldest golf clubs in the USGA, Knollwood Country Club is rich in history. The club has endured two World Wars, the Great Depression, and a devastating fire in 1919. The design challenge was to bring a century-old building up to modern standards while respecting its rich traditional heritage. The main level renovations include a new bar that blends the traditional wood detailing with modern finishes, including a window wall that opens to an outside bar.

The main dining room was transformed into a bright and vibrant space with nostalgic wall graphics and fullheight booths. Double-hung windows were replaced with a folding window wall to further open the space and bring light into the room. Former offices were removed to create a new private dining room with full-wall wine displays and a faux wood beam ceiling. The restrooms were completely rebuilt to be fully accessible, with new finishes that complement the design. A major highlight of the renovation is the new multi-level outdoor stone patio and covered dining areas comprising multiple fire pits, ceiling fans, and casual seating. A low wall surrounding the patio is covered in cultured stone to perfectly match the exterior stone walls of the club—making a seamless expansion of the outdoor amenities.

03 NORTH HILLS COUNTY CLUB

In order to expand the casual dining options at North Hills Country Club’s existing clubhouse, the open space adjacent to an outdoor patio between the main building and a freestanding dining room was enclosed with a new 1,800 sf two-story event space. Centered on a large bar, the infill addition includes additional casual dining space and an enclosed golf simulator.

In response to the difference in elevation of the three existing components, the addition is sunken from the main clubhouse but takes advantage of the high ceilings created by the offset. The golf simulator room is open to the interior with a glass partition that mirrors new expansive windows overlooking the expanded and updated patio. In addition to the dining space, the kitchen was renovated, and locker rooms and private event spaces were refreshed totaling 5,800 sf of new and renovated space.

Inspired by the region’s history of rail transport, the club features industrial design elements like wall graphics and iron details. The bar area includes an iron fretwork and industrial truss supporting the bar and flat screens. Porcelain brick tiles pay homage to industrial warehouses.
