TRIBECA FILM

FESTiVAL The Tribeca Film Festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001.

2016 Tribeca Film Festival Opens with Met Gala Documentary THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY Check out the creation of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “China: Through the Looking Glass,” exhibition, by curator Andrew Bolton. With unprecedented access, director Andrew Rossi captures the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala, and dives into the debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit is officially THE best way any fashion designer can show their creativity through fashion and art. The benefit is a black-tie extravaganza held the first Monday in May to raise money for the Costume Institute which is also known as the fashion department and this is the only one of the Met’s curatorial departments that has to fund itself. Throughout its inception, but not until 1999 when Anna Wintour, (editor of American Vogue and the artistic director of Condé Nast) took over as chairwoman, the event has been unofficially called “the party of the year. The MET Gala has led it to be an event conducive for the NYC philanthropic event and of course leading to a celebrity party. Those infamous in the fashion, film, politics and business use their status to obtain the hardest, high coveted party tickets of the year. Trend Privé Magazine 8

n today`s society, there are those that question fashion as to what relevancy it has in today’s society and there are those that feel fashion is just a materialistic mentality for the vein, narcissistic people of the world. Yes, that might be partially true, but those who feel that way, are not seeing the artistic side. Fashion is a way to express the artistic creativity that is within us. For many of us fashion is a form of art, opinion, creativity, self-expression, and inspiration. Caring about how we dress can some-

#1 THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY “First Monday In May” is the film that covers the inner workings of the annual exhibition and of the Met Gala. The film had its official opening night at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 13th and along with it came an array of celebrities, film makers and directors. “First Monday in May” was produced by Fabiola Beracasa Beckman, Dawn Ostroff and Sylvana Ward Durrett. It is distributed by Magnolia Pictures. The film is now playing in select theaters and available On Demand, Amazon Video and itunes.

times be seen as frivolous and shallow. And then yet, when it comes to other forms of self-expression, such as writing, dancing, painting, or singing, it’s willingly accepted that the more you care or do it, the more likely you are to fall into a path of personal exploration. So what is it about clothes or dressing the body—another form of self-expression—that makes it different?

We believe that if you feel comfortable in the look you’ve created for yourself, in the style that you`ve chosen for yourself, your mind is free and ready to create even more…. such as art, work...or the world. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that fashion is often characterized as an industry of followers and consumerism—which it can be—but it can also be a lot more nuanced. For some, fashion can be an extension of the self, or a way to (re)invent yourself. When someone’s physical appearance is one of the few tidbits of information received upon first meeting, it’s inevitable that quick conclusions are drawn based on their appearance, which is the way they`re dressed. However, dressing isn’t only a way to inspire, impress or assemble yourself for the public. It can be an

instant language that can transform the way you feel about yourself. With that being said, clothes can express the way we view the world and can change the way the world views us. If we think about a certain dress, we can describe its style as a manifestation of where one artist stands, the time and history that he created it, colored by the culture and emotions that he experienced. It could also be an attempt of a subconscious thought or emotion. In some societies, dressing is just another social norm and the ritual of getting dressed is an inevitable part of life. Trend Privé Magazine 9

The film tributes the Met and its key Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton and includes appearances by Anna Wintour and the fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano including renowned artists in other fields such as filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and pop icons such as Rihanna.

Elvis & Nixon Brilliant plot and a very talented starring duo. It might not be a real story, but it is indeed an entertaining fiction.

On the morning of December 21, 1970, actor-singer Elvis Presley shows up to the White House and requests an urgent meeting with President Richard Nixon, to swear him in as an undercover agent in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

The film also stars Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Knoxville, Colin Hanks, Evan Peters and Ashley Benson. The film was released on April 22, 2016 by Amazon Studios and Bleecker Street. . . .” (Goldberg, Matt) The premiers just keep getting better and better at the Tribeca Film Festival and last night was the premier

of “Elvis & Nixon” starring Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon. This comedic film is based around the story of the famous meeting between Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon in 1970. Just days before Christmas in 1970, Elvis, the most famous man in America arrives at the most powerful man’s house, Richard Nixon. What makes the film more of a comedy is the fact that Elvis sought to be a Federal Agent at Large for the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Kevin Spacey gave a not so conventional or believable portrayal of Richard Nixon in the look area. Although both Spacey and Shannon were not dead ringers for their characters, they did deliver fantastic understanding of the two. The film stars an all studded cast with British actor Alex Pettier, who plays Elvis’ friend, Jerry Schilling, who served as a consultant on the film. Johnny Knoxville plays Sonny, another friend of Elvis, and Colin Hanks plays Egil “Bud” Keogh. Trend Privé Magazine 13

atie Holmes along with her co-stars gathered at the BMCC John Zuccotti Theater on April 15, 2016 in New York City to view the premier of ‘All We Had’ during the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Based on Annie Weatherwax’s 2014 novel, Katie Holmes’s feature directorial debut along with co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, Jane Rosenthal who produced, said that the experience of directing was an “empowering” one. It was her vision in which she was able to following through on all of her instincts and also incorporate the visions of others. Holmes connected to the material because of her own experience as a mother (to Suri Cruise, 9).

Holmes plays Rita Carmichael, the mother of Ruthie Carmichael played by Stefania Owen. Her character makes the best of bad circumstances, pulled along in the wake of the hard luck in the wake of the 2008 Great Recession. They continually find themselves in search of stability and as mother and daughter try to settle in to a new town, they hit several road blocks is in which Ruthie struggles to keep it together. Keeping it afloat are the fantastic performances Holmes draws from herself and her excellent cast. “ Ruthie Carmichael (Stefania Owen) makes the best of bad circumstances, pulled along in the wake of the hard luck of her mother Rita (Katie Holmes). The first full day for premieres of films, TV, short stories and documentary screenings during the Tribeca Film Festival was in full swing as another anticipated world screening of the film, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, saw part of the cast walk the red carpet. Jason Sudekis, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake were just a few big names in attendance. Jessica Biel, who not only stars in but also produced the film, attended with husband Justin Timberlake, who composed and supervised the music for the film. Not in attendance, but who also stars in the film were Mary Steenburgen, Orlando Jones, and Paul Reiser. The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a film directed and rewritten by Bill Purple from an original script by Robbie Pickering. Purple has been assistant director on such popular films as Mr & Mrs Smith (starring Angelina Jo-

lie and Brad Pitt) and Spiderman 3. More recently he was AD on the television series Transparent, which he worked while trying to launch the filming of this film. Biel’s connection to Bill stems from her role in his short film Hole in the Paper Sky, which she also executive produced. Serving alongside Biel as producer is Mike Landry, Chuck Pacheco, Michelle Purple of Iron Ocean Films, and Carlos Velazquez. The backdrop of the film is set around Sudekis, who plays Henry, an introverted architect whose expectant wife, played by Jessica Biel, is suddenly killed in an accident. Sudekis’ character is grief stricken and finds it hard to cope with the loss of his wife and child. Subjecting his grief, he meets and helps a homeless teenager, Millie, played by Maisie Williams who has also experienced a loss. With this in common, the two form a bond, inspiring Henry to help the young, troubled girl to build a raft to escape an abusive uncle and sail across the Atlantic.

On April 17th 2016 Nicole Kidman walked the red carpet at the premiere of her most newest film The Family Fang at the BMCC John Zuccotti Theater in New York City. The multi-faceted actress was joined by her country music star and husband, Keith Urban. Also in attendance were Kidman`s costars Jason Bateman and Christopher Walken. But there’s a bit of a twist to the film, not only does Bateman costar in the film, he also directed it. Kidman who was looking for a director sent the script to Bateman and after reading it, he happily agreed. This is his second directorial debut for Bateman who previously directed ‘Bad Words’ in which he also stars as

How adorable?! Nicole‘s co-stars Jason Bateman (with wife Amanda Anka) and Christopher Walken were also in attendance. It`s possible that Nicole will be spending more time in the Big Apple in the near future as rumores say that she will take the play “Photograph 51” to Broadway. exciting! for our fashionistas, Nicole is wearing a “Louis Vuitton” dress, bag and shoes with “Fred Leighton” jewels. The dress featured full sleeves and a hem that fell just below her knees. very classy look! We also love her reddish blonde hair loose and the peAchy blush.

A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING

Although throughout the film, Clay continues to find frustration and failure, his dark sense of humor makes us love Hanks’ portrayal of this quirky character even more.

The story points out the outdated sense of America’s importance in the global marketplace and the dashed hopes and desperation of American business abroad.

ose Byrne looked fantastic in a Derek Lam dress paired with David Webb jewels and Tejen earrings along with Susan Sarandon in a chic black tuxedo suit as they both walked the red carpet for their latest film The Meddler at TriBeCa. The film stars the two sizzling actresses along with Cecily Strong from SNL and Jason Ritter whose roles cover multiple television credits and short films as well as theater and being the co-creator of Morning Knight, Inc. The film was written and directed by actress and writer Lorene Scafaria, perhaps best known for the success of 2008’s film, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. Scafaria has a multitude of talents, having credit in the industry as a producer, director and even as a singer on a few soundtracks. The Meddler has received critical acclaim for being a raw portrayal of feeling and not “tying things up in pretty little bows” to make the pain of betrayal easier to swallow. Roger Ebert has praised it as being “...an affecting, often profound film.” It follows the story of New Jersey widow, Marni Minervini (Susan Sarandon), who moves to Los Angeles to be close to her screenwriter daughter (Rose Byrne) who is feeling lonely and depressed after her boyfriend (Jason Ritter) dumps her for a younger woman.

“.Sarandon’s character puts all of her efforts into her daughter’s life while trying to figure out what to do with her own life now that her husband is gone. The Meddler is a creative spin on Lorene Scafaria’s own mother and their relationship after her father’s passing.“

art Freundlich is a brilliant director, screenwriter, and producer whose credits include The Rebound, Trust the Man, Catch That Kid, World Traveler. His feature-film debut and Sundance hit includes The Myth of Fingerprints, and numerous episodes of Showtime’s Californication. The drama focuses on a high-school basketball star struggling with family dysfunction. The movie takes place in a gritty urban place of a `70s era and is combined with stand-out performances from its trio of leads (— Shannon as the complex and irrational Lee; Carla Gugino as Anthony’s well-meaning mother struggling to

keep the shattering family together, and newcomer Smith, who channels popularity, confidence and vulnerability as Anthony faces his first real adult decisions-) and a strong, moving story. Young newcomer Smith plays 18-yearold Anthony, a captain of his NYC high-school basketball team, riding his way to Cornell on a sports scholarship. He is popular, smart, well-liked and confident, but although he seems to have it all, including a devoted girlfriend (Zazie Beetz) and the adoration of his coach and teammates, he is deeply troubled at home. Anthony`s father Lee, (Michael Shannon), has a gambling addiction that threatens the family`s financial securi-

ty. Lee is putting his marriage in jeopardy, while Jenny (Gugino) is struggling emotionally to hold everything together.

. .The film raises a strong sense of atmosphere, with the realistic NYC locations — yes, there are still some in the renovated city — very well captured by cinematographer Juanmil Azpiroz.

A drama full of sentimentality, turns and hiccups.

The performances are first-rate and main characters are full of struggle and intensity. The supporting players are equally memorable, leaving a complete strong impression of great acting and cast.

prah Winfey is a woman on a mission. From the inception of her OWN Network, Winfrey has helped to create series and miniseries alike and bring them to the public eye. April 23rd, in New York, Winfey premiered her new soap opera “Greenleaf” at the Tribeca Film Festival. A religious soap opera, in which she will have a recurring role, is within an industry that considers it taboo to devote an entire storyline to faith, spirituality and God. Winfrey definitely tackles this earnestly and head on. Trend Privé Magazine 31

“. . During a Q&A at postscreening, Winfrey states: “What this taught me is that dreams, as big as I can dream and as big the dream

that God has held for me, things get even bigger and better.” This is a story about a woman who returns

home because she misses the family and the faith that she left behind.

The first episode of Greenleaf hints of storylines that deal with the problems in today’s religions. Topics such as corruption, familial warring, infidelity, incest, suicide, homosexuality, the coverups and secrets. All of these things are kept under wraps to avoid the exposure of the pastor’s family who is the head of a megachurch with over 4,000 members at worship.. . .”

quals is a 2015 American science fiction romantic drama film, written by Nathan Parker and directed by Drake Doremus. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce, and Jacki Weaver. The movie is set in a smooth, sleek, stylish and futuristic world. The styling is rather simple and clean. In a futuristic utopian society, human emotions have been eliminated and everyone lives in peace, but when a new disease surfaces, everything changes for illustrator Silas (Hoult). He becomes an outcast once infected and is drawn to his writer co-worker Nia (Stewart), who is also infected but hiding her condition. In order to survive, they have to escape together. Very well captured by cinematographer John Guleserian. The colors and atmosphere he presented created an outstanding world for a great plot and fantastic acting. The film had its world premiere in the international competition section at the 72nd Ven-

Trend Privé Magazine 34

ice International Film Festival and had its North American premiere in the Special Presentations program at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. It was also presented at the Tribeca Film Festival. The sci-fi romance starts off in a futuristic place where human emotion is seen as a terrible thing that needs to be destroyed, but in this emotionless utopia, two people fall in love when they regain their feelings from a mysterious disease, causing tensions between them and their society. A couple begins to feel dangerous mixings for one another, allowing drama to kick in the plot. In a world of sophisticated and high-tech buildings, the director Drake Doremus creates a contrast of rawness and humanity by adding a futuristic Romeo and Juliet love story. At first, the two young lovers are struggling and fighting love, then they are fighting FOR love. Unfortunately the beautiful, enigmatic and experienced Kristen Stewart did not make it on the Tribeca`s red carpet.

THE NIGHT MANAGER In the BBC thriller, Tom Hiddleston plays soldier-turnedhotel-worker-turned-spy Jonathan Pine so well that he has become the subject of increasingly loud speculation that he may be called on to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond. Apparently, his impressive acting as Pine only added fuel to that fire.

The British soldier is contacted by an intelligence agent who asks for his assistance to spy on international businessman Richard Roper. The action starts from the first episode when a hotel night manager (Pine) receives a plea for help from an elegant guest. His actions draw him into the terrifying world of the worst man he will ever meet. The action moves from Cairo, Egypt to Richard Roper’s villa in Mallorca, Spain, then in Southeast Turkey. By the 6th episode, Roper and his team return to Cairo for the deal. Pine risks it all to put his plan in motion and a disgraced Burr makes one last stand.

hose in true foodie circles have likely come across the name of Jeremiah Tower before, although possibly are not as familiar with him than, say Ramsey or Oliver. That would be because Tower was a “celebrity chef” before there was such a thing. Harvard-educated Jeremiah Tower began his culinary career in 1972 as chef of Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. Jeremiah then owned other acclaimed restaurants in California and Asia. With all of the drama, bravado, controversy and intensity we have come to expect from the world of high-end cuisine slash reality show, ‘Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent ‘ was screened at John Zuccotti Theater at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center on April 16, 2016 in New York City to the delight of celebrity food aficionados and niche drama seekers alike. “The story of Jeremiah Tower is the stuff of legends — his brash personality and culinary genius make for a captivating look at the man and the story behind the legend,” The Or-

chard’s Paul Davidson said Thursday in a statement. “Not only are we thrilled to be working with Anthony and Lydia, but we are excited to be partnering with our friends at CNN on this film.” Added CNN Worldwide’s Amy Entelis: “CNN Films is so proud to partner with The Orchard and our Anthony Bourdain, Lydia Tenaglia and the team at ZPZ for this beautiful documentary about Jeremiah Tower. Tony and ZPZ’s amazing vision for Parts Unknown has changed how we think about food, culture and our global community. Jeremiah changed what it means to eat out in America, and we are so pleased to bring his exceptional story to a wide audience.” The Last Magnificent charts the life of Jeremiah Tower, one of the most controversial, outrageous, and influential figures in the history of American gastronomy. Yet his name has largely been obliterated from history. Featuring interviews by Mario Batali, Anthony Bourdain, and Ruth Reichl, this delicious documentary for the culinary set tells the story of the rise and fall of America’s first celebrity chef.

he first of many in a new series called “Tribeca Talks” debuted on April 15th as an event of the Tribeca Film Festival 2016. Actor Ethan Hawke and SingerSongwriter Patti Smith successfully launched this first event together speaking about subjects ranging from playwright Bertolt Brecht to Sam Shepard. Although on different spectrums of the entertainment industry, both have crossed over into each others’ fields, even if it were for a brief moment. Hawke, who is known for his acting roles, dabbled in writing and directing and Smith tried her hand from writing to music. During their conversation at the SVA Theatre on W. 23rd St, Hawke discussed his starring role in the retelling of the Bertolt Brecht play “Baal” and Smith noted that she had visited the playwright’s grave, revealing just one piece of common ground between the two. Smith discussed her once romantic link with Sam Shepard, with whom at the time of their relationship had a family and how it taught her to improvise.

She said, as they were breaking up, Shepard suggested they write a play. «Cowboy Mouth» was the result of the collaboration, and a suggestion of an improvisation between the two by Shepard came up. Smith was afraid, but Shepard said to her, «Patti Lee, it’s improvising. You can’t make a mistake.» «It was one of the greatest lessons I ever got,» she said. Hawke shared the same kinship to Shepard as someone to aspire to be. Hawke saw him as the «North Star». Although there was much to be discussed during this sit in, the two found their connection through the power of words.

V writer Damian Holbook led a conversation with Tina Fey about her multi-faceted career during one of the many Tribeca Talks: Storytellers session at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Fey, who is known for her hilarious comedy with her writing as the once-former head writer of SNL and for many performances in film and television. After moving on from SNL, she has completed several film projects such as Date Night, Baby Mama, This is Where I Leave You, Sisters and the current Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. But her notable role as executive producer, head writer, and star of the comedy series 30 Rock, are what lead her to win three Emmy Awards. During the Storytellers session with Damian Holbrook, Fey discussed The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, another one of her current projects in which she is the co-creator and executive producer of the hit Netflix series. She said: “We made most of Kimmy Schmidt season one thinking it was going to be on NBC,” after which, she went on to say “and it wasn’t until we were shooting the second-tolast episode that we started to realize we were probably not going to be on NBC. We’d made the show clean, which I liked, but it was not really a broadcast show, it was darker”.

There’s been rumors of a Broadway musical adaptation of her 2004 film Mean Girls with the star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, (Ellie Kemper who is currently pregnant), and because of the break of in-between tapings, it’s giving her the chance to work with her husband, (composer Jeff Richmond), and lyricist Nell Benjamin, to put the show together.

She stated to Holbrook that they’ll have the whole summer to work on the production of the highly anticipated musical version. Holbrook asked Fey about SNL: “Do you miss that outlet of doing regular political commentary that you had at SNL?” Fey replied “Yeah, I do. I feel like, looking back at 2008, it’s like an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Now, it’s like: `Ryan Murphy brings you Horror Election.`

Met Museum Exhibition Overview The Costume Institute’s spring 2016 exhibition, presented in the Museum’s Robert Lehman Wing, will explore how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear. With more than 170 ensembles dating from the early 20th century to the present, the exhibition will address the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production. It will explore this ongoing dichotomy, in which hand and machine are presented as discordant tools in the creative process, and question the relationship and distinction between haute couture and

www.metmuseum.org ready-to-wear. The Robert Lehman Wing galleries on the Museum’s first floor and ground level will present a series of case studies to unravel the hand/ machine conundrum. At the center will be an installation of toiles and prototypes presented as garments in the making or “monuments to ideas.” Emanating from this presentation will be a series of rooms based on traditional métiers of the haute couture, including embroidery, featherwork, artificial flowers, pleating, lacework, and leatherwork, which will be presented alongside versions that incorporate innovative processes, such as 3D printing, computer modeling, bonding and laminating, laser cutting, and ultrasonic welding. A room dedicated to the ateliers of tailoring and dressmaking will reflect the traditional division of a maison de couture.

Met Gala 2016 Preview by Adrielyn Christi There are those who question fashion as to what relevancy it has in today’s society. There are those who feel fashion is just a materialistic mentality for the vein, narcissistic people of the world. Yes, that is partially true, but those who feel this way are not seeing the artistic side. Fashion is a way to express the artistic creativity that is within us.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit is officially THE best way any fashion designer can show their creativity through fashion and art. The benefit is a black-tie extravaganza held the first Monday in May to raise money for the Costume Institute which is also known as the

fashion department and this is the only one of the Met’s curatorial departments that has to fund itself. Throughout it’s inception, but not until 1999 when Anna Wintour, editor of American Vogue and the artistic director of Condé Nast, took over as chairwoman, the event has been unofficially called “the party of the year”. The MET Gala has led it to be an event conducive for the NYC philanthropic event and of course leading to a celebrity party. Those infamous in the fashion, film, politics and business use their status to obtain the hardest, high coveted party tickets of the year.

We’ve been granted press preview before the actual event starts, when the who’s who in fashion and film walk the red carpet to mingle amongst the fortuitous individuals. Each costume has been meticulously been created by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Dior, Saint Laurent and more. No detail has been left undone and each dress is carefully curated to maintain it’s originality.

THE MET GALA 2016 Why the MET Gala Isn’t About Celebrities Playing Dress Up

BY ANDREA BELL We all love a good Red Carpet. The sparkle, the lights, the eliteness of it all. Humanity has been guilty of loving those whom we place upon pedestals without question for a good pair of shoes since long before Marie Antoinette. Often it seems that the life of a celebrity exists simply to allow us to revere in the latest trend, or to fawn over the newest gossip. It all seems very superficial and without any actual meaning at times, but if we look more closely, we can sometimes find that we have created these positions, and then put the prettiest people into them, to fulfil a higher purpose. We are writing history. Or in some cases, we are preserving history. It is not any secret that when anthropologist studies a culture, one of the most important parts of the equation is that of attire. You can tell an awful lot about the state of a society by what their deities were clothed in, how their ambassadors presented themselves, what the larger part of the society aspired to. The Metropolitan Museum Of Arts and Sciences was created to connect one of the largest collections of art and artifacts with both the general public and University Educators, Students and Faculty that contribute to writing the history of our world as we live it, and as we have lived it. And the only department that is responsible for maintaining its own funding is the Costume Institute founded in 1948.

Since its inception, the understanding was that this department would be entirely funded by the fashion industry itself, and the ______ of department heads and chairpersons have maintained that it has done this well. Initially, Eleanor Lambert, the founder of the CFDA, had the idea to create a chic dinner party for the matrons of the Museum where they could rent and wear one of the costumes in the exhibit for $50. The event has evolved to one that rivals the Oscars in scale and has committee chair Anna Wintour selling tables for up to $250,000. It is the most important annual fundraiser in the city of New York to maintain the curated exhibit that represents the art and history that is fashion. The MET Gala as it stands now, also performs a different function. While Ms Wintour is known for being relatively heavy handed with the allowances she makes for dress, often making suggestions on how attendees might uphold the theme that changes each year to match the current Met Exhibition, she also makes a distinct effort to provide connections for up and coming designers that have caught her eye as Editor In Chief of Vogue Magazine. This rubbing shoulders with the influencers of fashion and society can be the make or break opportunity that a designer may need to break away from the pack of those wanting to be noticed in a realm of creatives that make it incredibly difficult to do so. Of course, one has to watch their step. Rumor has it that Madam Chair was once so insulted by the last minute cancellation of a famous jewelry designer that she made sure that none of that artist’s pieces made it to the Red Carpet that evening. It is worth noting that the tradition of those with wealth and power having a say in how history is preserved still stands strong. It’s not such a bad thing, especially when it means things of beauty find their way into a distinct role of preservation for all to enjoy. And if it means that we get to witness a show of glitz, glamour and great shoes in the meantime, so be it. Vive La Reverence…

Manus X Machina Misses

These are just a few choices of the fashion misses at the met gala`s red carpet this year.

Check out our website for more. BY MYRA POSTOLACHE & ADRIELYN CHRISTI

1

Not much to say here, but what about this dress conveys technology in fashion, Maria?

Perhaps we had higher expectations from Lady Gaga, but haven`t we seen this outfit in some of her concerts already? For an artist who bases her whole thing on reinventing herself, Lady Gaga really only has two looks made by Versace. It’s a special talent to be underwhelming with no pants on.

2

3 Maria Sharapova

LADY GAGA

Nicki Minaj and Jeremy Scott

Which sparkly Halloween party were Nicki Minaj and designer Jeremy Scott going to? Massive cleavage spills out of bondage dress totally missing the theme. The star made the breast entrance in a very sexy dress, but unfortunately the sparkling buckles and thick straps that crisscrossed on the dress totally missed the Fashion in an Age of Technology theme.

Willow and Jaden Smith

4

It seems as though they missed the memo too. Although their pant and jacket ensembles were very fashionforward, they did not convey the meaning of the exhibit. As mentioned before, this is something you’d see them wear at an event such as the Grammy’s or MTV award, etc.

5

Selena Gomez

Although she is lovely and has enormous fashion sense, the Louis Vuitton dress she arrived in was a major miss. It seemed to be more of an off label dress which is shocking for the brand. This is something to scratch our heads at.

6

MADONNA Madonna’s view of the future is boring and we don’t want to be any part of it. Sorry Ricardo Tisci. On a good note, we love Madonna`s never-aging smile, beachstyle waves and natural make-up.

9

10 TAYLOR SWIFT

Kristen Stewart We love Kristen`s usual down-to-earth self, her gorgeous smile and cute poses, but her sparkly high-slit dress didn`t convey a futuristic theme much unfortunately.

The gorgeous and super talented Taylor Swift walked the red carpet in a Louis Vuitton dress, which looked rather terrible. We’re feeling for whatever stylist tried their best to talk her into a less hideous option. On a good note, the popular diva rocked the vampy lipstick like no other!

8

Wendy Kaling and Frida Khalo

The 36-year-old Mindy Project star and creator looked amazing in a Tory Burch dress and Jimmy Choo shoes, but unfortunately she missed the theme. The same for gorgeous Frida Khalo, whom is wearing another simple, white dress.

7

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato took to the 2016 Met Gala red carpet in New York City sporting a custom Moschino gown designed by Jeremy Scott. Unfortunately the gold, black and silver gown failed to embrace the theme. At least, we really hope the future won`t include any of this!

red carpet celebrities this year Article Myra Postolache & Andrea Bell Photos John Nacion

C

elebrities at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art went metallic as this year’s Met Ball celebrated the convergence of Man and Machine’s influence over the fashion realm. Last year, celebrities from film, music and the fashion industry were asked to dress to the theme of Chinese influences through western fashion as the theme “China: Through The Looking Glass” played out – with varying success. This year, the exhibit, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” met with similar confusion it seems. The MET Gala, Anna Wintour’s exemplary Costume Ball that offers one of the most creative outlets for designers dressing the elite of society. Privacy of the guests is intensely guarded, and posting on social media after they have walked the red carpet and entered the event has been banned since last year. It remains one of the most exclusive parties of the year and with an amazing cause to boot. The interesting thing about the ball is that it is the designers who work with their chosen stars as a canvas to portray their best work, within the confines of the theme of course, as opposed to most red carpet events that work in somewhat the other direction. We were at the edge of our seats to see what such a phenomenal and timely theme would produce. After all, the leaps and bounds of tech within fashion over the last few years have been felt literally from head to toe converging in couture in nearly unimaginable ways.. This year’s Met Gala brought out plenty of OLD HATS, from Sarah Jessica Parker and Beyoncé to Lady Gaga, but there were also a handful of stars who were newly introduced to this famous red carpet. While her family members have hit the Met Gala red carpet numerous times, Kylie Jenner made her big debut in Balmain alongside her mom, Kris. Other stars such as Cindy Crawford, Amy Schumer, and Idris Elba, also got their first taste of Anna Wintour’s MET Gala. We loved Nicole Kidman who looked like she was swaddled in the night’s sky in her glittering Alexander McQueen gown and matching cape. The best look? It’s a tough call, but she was in the top ten for sure. Also Bee Shaffer, Anna Wintour’s daughter, had a wonderful dress signed by Alexander McQueen and her accessories were a headband and rings by Fred Leighton and Macklowe Gallery earrings. Lily-Rose Depp was stunning in her beautiful dress signed Chanel and Gianvito Rossi shoes, the

Trend Privé Magazine 62

same Lauren Santo Domingo in a dress by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture and Nina Runsdorf jewelry. We loved the look of Kate Bosworth in a Dolce & Gabbana gown. The peachy-nude and yellow tones were a refreshing change among a sea of silver and black on the red carpet, while that headpiece was the perfect finishing touch. We were obsessed with Poppy Delevingne’s Marchesa gown. This was biggest fashion night of the year, and Delevingne looked like a sexy robot woman. Claire Danes stunned on the red carpet with a red lip and her hair pulled back in a sleek bun, channeling some serious Cinderella vibes with Zac Posen on her arm. Karolina Kurkova similarly exemplified the theme in a “smart dress” that incorporated LED lit flowers that changed colour according to the types of tweets she received. Winning the night’s theme, these two married the perfect hybrid of stunning fashion and the possibilities that technology offers. While Sarah Jessica Parker’s outfit wasn’t most outstanding Met Gala look, it’s certainly not her worst. The former “Sex in the City” star arrived on the carpet in this pirate-inspired look with Andy Cohen on her arm. We wonder if she was aiming for Steampunk? We were surprised that we didn’t see more of the industrially styled Victorian trend that has been hitting Costume Cons hard for a few years now. Our favorite MET GALA RED CARPET celebrities this year were Emma Watson, Margot Robbie and Lupita Nyongo for rocking sustainable fashion. Designers are creating apparel, accessories and fitness wear that can do everything from monitor your heart rate to charge your smartphone. Like any other art, the long-term trends in fashion are often driven by advancements in technology. New materials merge with the old and new needs drive innovation while fashion slowly evolves. Many fashion designers are combining their fashion creations with hi-tech processes to create original, futuristic designs. At the couture level though, one expects to still see the hand applied detail that the best fashion houses excel in. This was what the theme was meant to portray. With designers in the field like Manuel Albarran, Iris Van Herpen, Hussein Chalayan, Suzanne Lee, Siddhartha Upadhyaya, Rafael Rozenkranz, Nien Lam and Sue Ngo or Ying Gao we were slightly confused as to why we didn’t see a brighter influence of the more inspired variety this year.

OSCARS

THE

By Andrea Bell

With the biggest topic of conversation surrounding the Oscars in recent years having more to do with diversity (or lack thereof) than talent in the industry, it is somewhat of a question mark as to why the bigwigs in film are not addressing accusations of predominantly white culture within the Academy. Well, in actual fact, they are. And some argue that they have been for over fifty years now. However, as is the nature of such a slow moving industry, the process is... slow. There are many opinions as to why the roster of “top talent” at the Oscars is repetitively male and white. Is it a matter of “like begets like”? In a manner of speaking, yes. Or partly. One of the biggest barriers to acknowledgement that the culturally diverse community faces is that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is comprised of a membership that is solely entitled by the amount of experience one has within the industry. Often politics are blamed for the “same people” being nominated year after year after year, and regularly it takes numerous nominations for a nominee to actually take home that little gold statue. When the number of films you have been part of (and consequently the fewer movers and shakers you know) drop to a much smaller percentage, then yes, your chances of winning drop drastically. So is it a race thing? Yes. And no. When you look at the hugely successful career of Will Smith, that has spanned decades and a plethora of titles, and who is only now

entering the ring of the “accomplished”, it may be easier to see what the stretch is to gain recognition at that scale. And when you consider where Smith started, and how diverse the arena was then, you can see that the hurdles, while being jumped, are only being set out very sparingly. Because in an established community that adheres to rules and standards that essentially define an entire industry, it is not often that somebody wants to rock the boat. The biggest difference in the cultural spectrum is that most African American, Native American, Latino, Indian and Asian American actors have had to either create their own roles, or be content with stereotyped roles that they fall into more easily. Or in the case of screenwriters et all, the overwhelming difficulty in finding a presumed audience (in the form of the yay or nay sayer that approves funding for a project) for their body of work. More than anything, the industry is known for playing it safe, and that means repetition. Conversely, when a risk is allowed to be taken, it is often those films that bypass the decades long route and fast track a member to a nomination, and often, a win. The benefit of diversity is clearly seen in the Television Industry, that, while sharing similarities across the board, is actually run in a very different way than film. The biggest difference is speed. Television is not only consumed in shorter bytes, and filmed in a much shorter time frame, but it is almost entirely based on ratings that are credited

in real time. A network will alter a program according to the most popular elements as they play out. It takes many years to make a movie. If you start at the very beginning of a project and follow the process, you often see a decade of work happening even before the filming begins. In this context it is maybe easier to see why change in the Academy is so sluggish and while we are seeing with shows like “Orange Is The New Black” or “Scandal” that diversity is, in fact, the key to success in a sea of seemingly endless choices on cable, the commitment and investment that a motion picture demands makes producers nervous. So isn’t it up to the Academy then to ensure that measures are taken to open up the playing field? Yes, and they have recently done so in the formation of a plan labelled A2020, introduced by AMPAS president Cheryl Isaacs at November’s Governor’s Awards. The plan outlines programs that mandate top executives expand their hiring process. Again, this does not mean change overnight, but it does mean change. In the meantime, advocates and critics alike say that the process needs to start long before the Academy is even involved. In the school system, in other forms of media, and in our collective take on what our world actually looks like. As film is merely a form of entertainment that hinges on portrayal of our own world, whether real or imagined, then in the big picture, it is this recognition that needs to change. And in this sense, we are all catalysts. Trend Privé Magazine 101

There is a new trend afoot in the celebrity ranks, and it’s one that is long overdue. We are seeing more and more of the entertainment industries elite aligning with one or more causes and using their influence to either spread awareness, raise funding or bring cachet to something they believe in. While fame and martyrdom have always gone quietly hand in hand, with many founding organizations or supporting movements to do good with their success and prosperity, there is suddenly an urgency with many to work at uniting followers and encouraging more of us to take part at any level. None seem quite as intent as those working toward environmental change and stewardship. And this is not surprising, as it is now obvious to anyone not hiding under a rock that our planet, and our dependence on it for our survival as a species, is in trouble. Most notably in recent years may be Leonardo DiCaprio, who dedicated the final moments of his Oscar acceptance speech this year to calling on society to put an end to global warming, to hold irresponsible corporations accountable, and to do our part to alleviate the issues we have caused for the earth’s fragile eco system. He delivered an engaging and genuine speech to the United Nations Assembly back in 2014 as the then newly appointed “UN Messenger of Peace” noting that “climate change is our single greatest security threat.” Leo was one of the distinguished guests at the 2016 Riverkeeper Foundation’s“Fisherman’s Ball” and has put his money where his mouth is, donating $100k to match Ralph Lauren’s grant and making them both the “Big Fish” of the evening. Many famous names were on hand to stand in solidarity of Riverkeeper’s 50 year commitment to cleaning up the Hudson, once the site of mass polluting by New York

industries. Robert De Niro, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Mark Ruffalo and many others were treated to a performance by Sting celebrating continued success in the foundation’s endeavors. DiCaprio has been lauded for the last few years making large donations to a multitude of causes through his foundation that fights climate change, supports wildlife biodiversity and ocean conservancy, raising over $45 million since 1998 for over 65 different organizations. Those that have accused the actor of using the stance to promote his movie, the Revenance, may want to check that date. This isn’t a new play for Leo and it is exactly this type of big ticket investment that is needed to check the corporate greed that has pervaded every industry on the planet.

Stars that run the gamut from Miley Cyrus to Patricia Arquette have used their award show presences to gain a foothold in their chosen cause, often accomplishing more than just raising awareness. Miley’s speech at the Video Music Awards last year helped raise over $200K for homeless youth. Let’s see more of this outspoken caring from our society and remember that we can all play a part. We continue to be inspired by the hairstyles and wardrobe of these celebrities we admire, let us also be influenced to volunteer time or donate money toward bettering the world. We are inextricably linked to our natural surroundings, the eco system and our place in society’s fabric and hierarchy. If we were to collectively come together to celebrate this mentality, we really would save the world. Each and every one of us.
