About the Exhibition Curated by Dali Higa, Vanessa Rothe and Akhmed Salakhly What started out as a group of artists and art historians who shared a strong common vision for art, has now become a successful international traveling exhibition of museum quality works; Realism Without Borders. Exhibiting side by side, Soviet and historical works with contemporary works by Russian, Ukrainian, American, French, English, Chinese and German artists, Realism Without Borders aims to connect two centuries and two continents via the commitment to realist painting traditions. From Fechin, to Lomakin, Survov to Kovolenko, Blokhin to Higa, Passemard to Rothe, and special guest artist Jeremy Lipking, this exhibition will unite historical Russian and Soviet pieces with contemporary international artists who have studied the same rooted fine art techniques and are working in similar styles today. With the Museum’s similar goals of education and quality fine art, RWB proudly comes to the California Museum of Fine Art this September 2014. This unique exhibit will allow collectors a rare chance to view and compare works from America, Europe and Russia and to purchase for their collection. Works will range from small affordable studies to large scale Museum quality works of fine art. Opening night will feature a special lecture by Dr. William Havlicek author of Van Gogh’s Untold Journey as well as a rarely seen privately owned painting by Nikolai Fechin “Study for Theater Play of Carmen” from 1920. This work will be on view opening night only, as a Private Collection loan from the Salakhly Family. Founded by Akhmed Salakhly (Repinart curator), exhibiting artist and co curator Vanessa Rothe, and exhibiting artist Antonin Passemard, RWB is currently flourishing with successful national exhibitions and over 25 core artist members. This diverse and talented group of painters from all over the globe have had impressive traditional training from such schools as the renowned St. Petersberg Academy of Arts, (Repin Institute), Penza Art Institute, the Kharkov Art Institute, The Florence Academy of Art, Laguna College of Art and Design, Beaux Art school of Auxerre, France, and the Academy of Art in San Francisco in California, just to name a few. The Artists have shown in top exhibitions worldwide from St.Petersberg, to Paris, to Los Angeles andhave impressive resumés as well as strong bodies of work ranging from classical academy works to painterly plein air or impressionist pieces. This international group of classically trained representational artists believes in the successful combination of objective traditional training combined with expressive personal subjects, and often painterly strokes. “We share an admiration of both ‘Realist’ and ‘Impressionist’ art, and many of our artists combine these styles in order to make strong appealing works of art.”says Rothe. Realism Without Borders also believes firmly that art is for the people. Our aim is to have a travelling exhibition in order to touch a wide and diverse audience. Alexi Borodin

Alexei Borodin was born in 1915 to a family of peasants. During the Russian Civil War, he was orphaned as a child and was placed in the care of the military regiment on education, an orphanage for boys that trained them to become soldiers. After leaving the orphanage, Borodin attended Saratov Art and Industry High School from which he graduated in 1936 with a diploma in teaching painting and drawing. Also, for a short time, he was a student of Igor Grabar, one of the most celebrated Russian impressionists in history. Borodin was wounded while serving in an armored division of the Red Army during World War II. After the war, he taught art at his alma mater until the 1960’s when he moved to present day Volgograd (Stalingrad) to do the same. Borodin was a member of the Russian Union of Artists since 1939 and participated in most all local, regional, Republican and Union-sponsored exhibitions from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. In 1986, Borodin was honored with a one-man exhibit at the Volgograd Art Museum which owns his most famous painting,Volgograd Farmers (1964.) Much of his work is in the Volgograd Art Museum, Saratov Art Museum and the Museum of Defense in Volgograd. His paintings are in numerous private collections throughout the world. Borodin is listed in Matthew Bown’s A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters, 1900 - 1980’s.

Nikolai Fechin was born 26 November 1881 (Kazan, Russia) died 5 October 1955 (Santa Monica, California) - was a Russian-American painter known for his portraits and works featuring Native Americans. After graduating with the highest marks from the Imperial Academy of Arts and traveling in Europe under a Prix de Rome, he returned to his native Kazan, where he taught and painted. He exhibited his first work in the United States in 1910 in an international exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After immigrating with his family to New York in 1923 and working there for a few years, Fechin developed tuberculosis and moved West for a drier climate. He and his family settled in Taos, New Mexico, where he became fascinated by Native Americans and the landscape. His best work while in the United States was of these elements. The adobe house which he renovated in Taos is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is used as the Taos Art Museum. After leaving Taos in 1933, Fechin eventually settled in southern California.
Boris Kuznetsov

Boris Kuznetsov was born in 1936 in Orenburg West Russia. He graduated from St Petersberg Repin Institute in 1966 and was a strong student. He studied with famous soviet artist Professor Oreshnikov and lived in St Petersberg after school, making a name for himself. His works have a storng compositioonal element as well as good value use. Kuznetsov is a member of the Union of Artists ince 1966 and participated in traditional exhibitions of the Union of Artists in St Petersberg since that time. His work is reminiscient of the Soviet times with borad strokes and symbolic subjects and is collectors piece of the time in style and manner.
Oleg Lomakin

Oleg Lomakin was born in Krasny Kholm, in Tver Region on August 26, 1924. At the age of 16, he studied at the High School of Arts in Leningrad and continued until the school was evacuated to Smarkand in February 1942. He enlisted in the Great Patriotic War in 1942, was seriously injured the following year, and received the First Class Partiotic War Order and Medal For Bravery. In 1944, he returned to the Arts. Oleg graduated from the the I. E. Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in the B.V. Ioganson workshop in 1952. Among his teachers were Scholokhov, Bernstein, Anisovich, Mikhailov and Zaitsev. “The best memories I have are associated with Zaitsev, both as a man and as a teacher.” In 1952, he also joined the Leningrad Chapter of the Russian Artists Union. In 1978, Lomakin won a Kirov Factory Prize and in 1981 he was named Honorable Artist of Russia. He has participated in national, republican and local exhibits in Leningrad, and international exhibits in Finland, Germany, France, Spain and Japan. Authored by N.G.. Moiseyeva, Lomakin’s album-monograph was published in Leingrad in 1991. Lomakin comments, “I am a realist. I like to paint interesting people. I like to paint landscapes, too. I have painted many subjects, but I like working on portraits the most. It seems to me that the graphic art should be diversified. Everybody sees in his own, different way. And this diversity, this ‘dispute’, can result in interesting productions. However, I think that the sense of life, the presence of live nature, is indispensable in painting; for nothing is more beautiful than nature.” Oleg Lomajin passed away in StPetersburg in 2011. His work can be found in many books on Soviet Impressionism worldwide.
Alexander Pushnin

Aleksander Pushnin was born March 28, 1921 in Marshansk, Russia. He attended his first art school in 1934, at the age of thirteen. In 1940, Pushnin was accepted into the Fine Arts Academy of St. Perersburg (Repin Institute). Following military service in World War II, Pushnin returned to the Academy and graduated in 1950. He studied in the studio of Professors Frentz andGerasimov, where he completed his diploma piece, “Arrest of the Temporary Government”. He became a member of the Union of Artists in 1950. Pushnin taught at the Academy in St. Petersburg from 1955 until his retirement in 1988. He taught drawing and sculpture in the architecture department. Pushnin died September 5, 1991 in St. Petersburg. Erik Rebane

Rebane was born near Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in 1922. He attended secondary art school until 1940 andwas accepted at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad (Repin Institute). His full-time studies were interrupted by World War II, serving in the military from 1941 to 1945. He survived the Nazi Siege of Leningrad during which he produced several notable academic drawings of art professors. Rebane was able to continue his full-time studies at the Academy in 1945 taking classes under master artists such as Andrei Mylnikov and Viktor Oreshnikov. He graduated from the Academy in 1951. Rebane was immediately offered a faculty position teaching painting at the Estonian Art Institute in Tallinn, Estonia where he stayed until 1954 when he left for a very prestigious position in the post graduate department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad. He began participating in exhibits as early as 1948 in Moscow, but he did not join the Leningrad Artists’ Union until 1951. Rebane’s works were widely exhibited throughout his career in Leningrad, Moscow, numerous Russian regions, Tokyo in 1974 and in Scottsdale, Arizona in the early 1990’s at the Fleischer Museum of Art.. His paintings are in the permanent collections of museums in Moscow, Leningrad, Poltava, Khabarovosk, Kiev, Tbilisi and Osaka, Japan. He is listed in and has a painting featured in Matthew Bown’s A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters and featured in both Matthew Bown’s Socialist Realism and the Fleischer Museum’sHidden Treasures: Russian and Soviet Painters, 1930’s-1980’s.

Vladimir Skryabin was born in 1927 in Leningrad (St-Petersburg). He graduated from the Repin Institute in 1955. Studiers with Prof. Frents Member of St-Petersburg. Skryabin was part of the Union of artists since 1955. Started to exhibiting in all – union exhibitions around 1950’s. Most important exhibition participated in “Soviet Russia” 1960. Vladimir Skryabin worked as a painter and illustrator. His works are in collections of the major Russian museums such as: State Tretyakov gallery, State Russian Museum, Museum of history of St-Petersburg., Arkhangelsk art museum, Petrozavodsk art museum, Gallery Gekosso. Japan. Skryabin is listed on page 296 of Bown’s A. Dicitionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters. Skryabin passed away in St-Petersburg at 1989.
