Wilson Alvarez Position: Pitcher - Throws: Left MLB debut July 24, 1989 - Texas Rangers Last MLB appearance September 28, 2005 Los Angeles Dodgers Wilson Álvarez is a former professional baseball player. During a 13 year baseball career, he pitched for the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He currently is the pitching coach for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. Compiling a career record of 102W–92L with 1,330 strikeouts and a 3.96 ERA in 1,747.2 innings. Alvarez’s baseball career began when he was signed by the Texas Rangers as an amateur free agent on September 23, 1986. He made his major league debut at the age of 19 on July 24, 1989. On July 29, 1989, he was part of a multi-player trade to the Chicago White Sox. Alvarez provided one of the highlights of the 1991 White Sox season on August 11, by pitching a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in only his second Major League start. In 1994 Alvarez went 12–8 and made the American League All-Star team. In 1997 he was sent to the Giants as part of a 10-player mega-deal. A free agent after the 1996 season, he signed a five-year contract with Tampa Bay. He was the team’s first pitcher, and started Opening Day on March 31, 1998, throwing the Devil Rays’ first ever pitch. After his contract was up Alvarez signed with the Dodgers where he finished his career.
