Looking Through The Lens “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” Karl Lagerfeld
“It was through a random act of kindness that I met Giovanni Lunardi in mid-2009.” In our second year of production Giovanni began shooting our cover feature stories. It was the care he showed in what we were producing that made the switch easy. Our first issue together was renowned architect, Carl Abbott. 55 issues later Giovanni celebrates his 50th year of photography by gracing this issue’s cover. A mentor then, and to this day, his thoughtful critique continues to propel REAL Exclusive forward. What we do together is special and I continually learn from the master. Giovanni, thank you, and to many more years of looking through the lens! Ed Bertha 2015 Holiday 1

Corporate SWAT Challenge
On Saturday, October 10th, 12 teams sponsored by area businesses spent the day at Knight Trail Park in Nokomis competing in four tactical events of skill, endurance and strategy. The 6th Annual Corporate SWAT Challenge gave participants a day of fun in a challenging but team-building atmosphere while raising money for a great cause - the Sheriff ’s Activities League (SAL) of Sarasota County. The Sheriff ’s Activities League of Sarasota County is the non-profit branch of the Sarasota County Sheriff ’s Office that partners with public schools, afterschool programs, as well as civic and other youth-related organizations to provide a variety of experiential education opportunities to youth throughout Sarasota County. SAL programs are facilitated by deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff ’s Office, and offer unique opportunities for young people to develop positive relationships with local law enforcement personnel. CHEF PAUL MATTISON’S Fregola Sarda
This and other tantalizing recipes are available in the cookbook Chef! The Stories and Recipes of Chef Paul Mattison, available for purchase at Mattison’s Forty-One, www.Mattisons.com or www.Amazon.com Chef Paul Mattison Mattison’s Forty-One 7275 South Tamiami Trail Sarasota, FL 34231 (941) 921.3400 www.Mattisons.com
This ancient Sardinian pellet-shaped pasta has the ability to assume the flavors of any dish. Unlike typical pastas, fregola is best simmered in a small amount of broth. I add it to some of Florida’s freshest seafood for a hearty and delicious stew.
Serves four 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp unsalted butter 8 ounces firm, white fish, such as mahi mahi or grouper 16 peeled and deveined jumbo shrimp 2 finely minced shallots 2 tsp minced garlic 1 cup grilled, small-diced fennel 2 cups cooked fregola sarda 2 cups tomato purée 4 cups Lobster Stock (page 111) 24 cleaned, debearded mussels 2 Tbsp chopped parsley 1 Tbsp finely chopped fennel tops Salt and pepper to taste
Heat olive oil and butter in a large, widebottomed saucepan over medium heat. Cut the fish into small pieces and season with salt and pepper. Add fish to the pan, being careful not to crowd, or the fish will not brown. Cook the fish, without touching, 4 to 5 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Turn the fish over, cook for one more minute, and remove from the pan. Cook the shrimp the same way and remove from the pan. Add the shallots to the pan and sauté until soft. Add the garlic, fennel and fregola, then sauté for 2 to 3 minutes. Add tomato purée, Lobster Stock and the fish. Bring to a boil then reduce heat. Add the shrimp and the mussels and cook until the mussels open. When all seafood is cooked, remove from heat and finish with parsley, fennel and more butter if desired. Season to taste. Spoon into bowls and serve with grilled bread.
Lobster Stock 3 Tbsp vegetable oil 3 pounds lobster shells ½ cup brandy 6 garlic cloves 2 rough-chopped onions 1 rough-chopped fennel head 2 rough-chopped carrots ¾ cup tomato paste 12 cups water Heat the oil in a large, wide pot over high heat until just smoking. Add the shells and sear for one minute. Stir slightly and continue cooking for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until well browned. Add the brandy, garlic and vegetables. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up bits from the bottom of the pot. Add the tomato paste, reduce heat to mediumlow and cook for 3 minutes or until the vegetables are soft. Add water and bring to a boil for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, and let stand for 10 minutes. Strain through a fine sieve.

GLUTEN GLUTTONY: Surviving The Holidays Living gluten free is challenging enough under normal daily circumstances. When you add on the holidays and events, you have a prescription for disaster.
Gluten free living continues to grow in popularity and more stores and restaurants are becoming increasingly more aware of the need for gluten free foods. That’s not usually true of holiday parties and the numerous events that take place in season. What is frequently served are the staples of any party; cheese and crackers, baked goods, desserts and oh the pastas! Who doesn’t want to indulge in the delicious meals and snacks that are offered up? How do you contain yourself in a world of decadent food? You go in with a plan of attack. No, not attacking the food! Attack the cravings for the gluten riddled food with strategies to reduce your envy of that big fat chocolatey cake staring at you. First let’s talk about what gluten is. Gluten is a protein found in wheat rye and barley. It can also be in whole grain foods related to wheat, including bulgur, farro, kamut, spelt, and triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye). It helps foods maintain their shape acting as a glue that holds food together. Foods that contain gluten…. Yep! All my favorites: Bread, Pasta and Beer. Many sauces, spices, cold cuts, marinades, trail mixes, frozen foods, condiments and more can contain gluten. Always check the labels and small print. A lot of gluten free food may still be processed in manufacturing sites that process wheat, barley, etc. which if you are highly sensitive, as in celiac disease, can cause problems. When you have a gluten sensitivity your body is unable to properly digest or break down the gluten protein found in wheat and certain other grains. Gluten sensitivity can range from bloating, gas, joint pain, irritability, headaches, itchy skin rash or fatigue to a severe autoimmune disorder, celiac disease, in which gluten can cause long-term damage to your small intestine and may
result in nutritional deficiencies making them more susceptible to further diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. Like fighting the so called mild symptoms isn’t enough! Thankfully, there are a few whole grains that don’t contain gluten, including amaranth, millet, and quinoa, and many other gluten free flours, coconut, tapioca, are available. Companies are becoming more gluten savvy and have increased their gluten free products and prices are lowering You just have to keep a good eye out for them and try to find a taste you enjoy.
Now on with the gluten fighting strategies. Strategy #1 Try to eat something before going out. When is there ever a shortage of food at these gatherings? Never! It’s an endless cycle of food coming and food going. Trying to deprive yourself of the things you love all night is no way to be a happy party goer. Having your gluten free meal prior to the party or event will help to reduce the cravings before you begin to even smell the deliciousness of those flaky appetizers. If you eat the gluten free breads and pastas prior to the event, you will be less likely to crave them while you are there. Strategy #2 Bring along your own snacks. Sounds kinda crazy, bringing food for yourself to a party but one must do what one must to keep from suffering the consequences of gluten over indulgence. There are many gluten free crackers that are just delicious and bringing a small baggie of them along will allow you to not look like a total crazy trying to roll up almonds in some brie cheese to get that delicious crunchy effect. Yes, I did that and it was delicious. Strategy #3 If you are at a house party, you could also offer to make a tray of your best gluten free food to share and keep a couple for
yourself off to the side. Most hosts will be very welcoming to your addition to their food selection. Talk to your host for a special spot you can keep the extras so when everyone has gobbled up your mouth watering treats, you will still have some to control those growls for the next freshly baked items being brought right past you.
Strategy #4 Learn to love veggies and fruit. PLAIN. Yes the creamy dip left to cover your raw veggies or the lickable sugary topping for the fruit may be filled with gluten. Packaged sauces or salad dressings can sneak that gluten in faster than a pissed off female texting! Question the ingredients if you can, why waste a perfectly good addition to your very healthy choice? Strategy #5 When all else fails and you can’t beat that urge to sample the offerings, remove the breading. Now this can be quite difficult at times when the foods are encased with that nasty gluten stuff but it can be done. I suggest a small quiet area where no one can see you and ask questions because you know as soon as you have dug out the inner findings and are trying to squish it together to put it in your mouth, someone will inevitably see your destruction and wonder what cave did she crawl out of. Bringing a small spoon or fork may help with that one because there aren’t always utensils at an event. Strategy #6 Find a gluten free buddy. Having someone who is in the same misery as you is always better. 2 snack packs are better than one. Build a group of buddies and just imagine the gluten free heaven you’ll be in! So when you see all those empty mini hamburger buns lying around, you can think of me using strategy #5. Happy Eating!

The Secret For
PERFECT CURLS “Your hair being the center of attraction
is a dream come true”
One explanation: It’s too heavy. This can happen with long, straight, thick hair that is bluntly cut. Try adding subtle layers to your hair style to lighten the heaviness. Don’t Overload Your Hair With Product Your hair texture could also be the source of your problems. Fine hair doesn’t hold curls very well because it has a slippery texture. This hair texture is very sensitive to products and the amount you use. Too much product can weigh it down, and not enough product can create flyaways.
Ultra-feminine look or the girl-nextdoor look or even the diva look, curls will do the trick! Waves can make almost anyone look like a million bucks and curls can spice up any style. People with natural curls can experiment a lot with their look. The gorgeous hair texture of curls stands out. People with poker straight, fine or even limp hair need to get a little innovative. They will always say that some types of hair will never hold curls well. You will prove them wrong. The biggest hair battle we face is trying to get the hair to hold a curl that lasts longer than an hour (let alone 20 minutes!). The following tips tell you how to make curls last longer....... Try these expert tips !!!!!!! The Heavier the Hair, the Harder to Curl There are a few reasons why your hair won’t hold its curls.
Dirty Hair Holds Curls Better Healthy medium to thick hair holds curls the best because it has an even balance of protein and moisture that’s perfect for styling. What’s more, “second day” hair, or hair that was washed and blown out the previous day, is ideal. It’s easier to style hair the next day once the hair’s natural oils and texture have had time to equilibrate. Use Volumizing Products Maintaining your curls is all in the preparation. Start by using a lightweight volumizing shampoo and conditioner. If you have thicker hair, use a volumizing mousse to help lighten up your hair and hold the curl. Pick The Right Curling Tool The best tool to use on thick hair is a ceramic curling iron - it is thinner hair that is a bit trickier. Hot rollers will produce a better curling outcome than a typical regular curler, is safer and results in less damage to your hair. Curl Without Heat Do you skip the curling routine just to
22 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com
avoid heat damage? Great news for you! You don’t need to use heat at all! For heatless curls, just simply braid your washed hair and leave it overnight, to find fresh loose waves! This is another great way to make curls last longer! Regular Hair Care and Prevention of Heat Damage Damaged hair can never hold curls or look great. If you have split ends or frizzy hair, your curls will look unruly. Plus their might be problems in getting them to curl in the first place. Trim them. Secondly, the less frizzy your hair, the more beautiful your curls will look. Trust me!!!! Always condition your hair well. Next, spray your hair with a heatactivated hairspray and let it sit for about a minute before you curl it. Then, curl your hair in small sections and clip each one up to let it set. This will allow the cuticle to cool and close while it’s in the curl shape. After it your hair has cooled, take the clips out and let your curls fall in to place and then apply a medium hold hairspray. With this double process, your lovely curls will stay in place much longer. Always Protect Your Locks !!!!!! GIOVANNI LUNARDI’S
View of the World
By Richard F. Corrigan
I
t is said that to understand a man’s life you have to walk in his shoes. You can’t, really. But for the first time, you will be allowed to look through another man’s eyes.
This is an invitation to view something you have never before been allowed to experience. It’s not scary, but it may cause you to gasp. Your jaw may drop, and you may hear yourself utter words like, “Unbelievable! Amazing! Phenomenal! WOW!”
There is not any one of your friends or acquaintances you are even close to knowing as intimately as you will come to know Giovanni Lunardi after you begin filling your eyes with his handiwork. Every photo you view, every piece of art, every representation is a chance to see the world through his eyes. Gaze upon his creations. It’s as if you are inside his head, observing the universe through his eyes. You will step into his world, uncensored, unabridged, uncorrupted, and naked with truth. Within these pages, you will take a short journey that will surely whet your appetite for more. Sit down, get comfortable, journey inside his mind, and experience his world. What you see is what he sees. There is nothing hidden, nothing prefabricated, nothing unnatural, only what is revealed by the light whether it be from the sun or artificially generated. You’ll see the world as he sees it; sometimes in color, sometimes in black and white.

Giovanni has followed the sun all over the world, deciding that his current hometown of Sarasota provides better light than Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, or California.
throughout his life. He is the looking glass of the planet. For whatever guides him, he sees truly, surely, purely all that creation displays and awaits documentation.
Then he met Jean Shrimpton — one of the world’s most famous fashion models. He was introduced to Catherine Deneuve, Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones along with Rod Stewart.
The morning’s rays firing across Florida creates the perfect exposure upon the sand of the state’s western shore and the Gulf waters. And in the afternoon, the light is the purest on the planet. “It’s the people, the weather, the opportunity. That is why I come to Sarasota. There are ways to use the whole day for photos.” However, surprisingly, a bright sun and a deep blue sky are not ideal for outside shots. But Giovanni knows how to capitalize on the conditions and create a masterpiece. But what does Giovanni really see?
When Giovanni was first learning his profession, he worked with the four best fashion photographers in the world: Richard Avedon, Guy Burdin, Helmut Newton, and David Bailey. Early on he met his wife, Ines. She was seventeen, blonde, tall, and beautiful. He took photos of her and presented them to the editor of the famous fashion magazine for which he was working — Amica. They loved his shots of her and placed her on the cover over 500 times.
So, Giovanni is not starstruck by celebrity. The names of the Gulf Coast notables he has met and photographed are too numerous to mention. But he also loves to photograph those who have not yet become famous. He has done this with Carol Alt whose career took off after his photos and also Charlize Theron. Thousands of people have entered his frames, and those photos have become future artifacts of history: icons of decades past and future representations of millennia to come.
When he looks at you, he sees all the greatness, the beauty, and the generations of lineage in your face. He is captivated by the way you move, hold yourself, and the language of your body when you are in conversation, working, or just relaxing. He sees this, and captures it. He has allowed himself to be the tool of another force that has guided him Brooke Shield 28 | REAL EXCLUSIVE | GetRealExclusive.com

It is the 50th anniversary of the opening of Giovanni’s Milan studio. When he first moved to Sarasota, Italian designers sent their newly-created clothes to Giovanni and he had to find models, take the photos, and send the prints back to Italy to be used in their fashion publications. Giovanni’s photos have appeared on the covers of over 4,000 magazines, worldwide.
The water and sand were on the other side but were hidden. He stepped back and took a photo of the wall with the blue sky beyond and wondered what he couldn’t see. He walked until he came to the end of the barrier and saw the beach and water. He took a photo of the natural scene. Back in his studio he set the two printed photos alongside each other. “What can I do with these?” he said.
Back in the 70s, Giovanni began experimenting with “cut” photos. One day, he happened to be strolling along a fence near a beach. Of course he never went anywhere without his camera.
Then it struck him. He decided to cut the walled photo in the middle from the top about two-thirds of the way down and curl the corners back. He then placed the beach-water-and-sky photo behind
it. His “cut-photo” idea was borne. This led to his experiment with 3D. And good fortune followed. To Giovanni’s Milan studio one day came a representative of Monsanto. They saw the 3D work he was doing (this was in the late 70s) and asked if he could make a number of boxes incorporating his photos and fabric used in their products. The results were 28 works of art that Monsanto exhibited all over Europe and then followed up with a brochure titled, “Paintings Commissioned for Monsanto.”

Giovanni has always liked to experiment and discover new methods of expression. Like the great Italian explorers Cristoforo Colombo, Marco Polo, Giovanni da Verrazzano, and Amerigo Vespucci; Giovanni Lunardi has been exploring all his life: seeking new means to exhibit the majesty of the world so the public can see what he sees.
in unique and surprising ways, the beautiful two-dimensional pieces of art suddenly develop into three dimensional empirical stimuli threatening to morph into a fourth.
“Photo-shopping has been going on since the 1800s,” Giovanni states. Back then, to make photos look better, photographers would scratch out the undesirable sections of a black and white photo and fill it in with similar-toned ink.
Giovanni explains, “During my career, my goal has been to give my photographs light, depth and contrast to avoid flatness in my pictures printed on paper or on the pages of magazines. Working in 3D has allowed me to achieve this goal. By giving volume to my photographs and being able to see beyond the images, I have satisfied my visual needs and imagination.” Without the aid of those 3D glasses with one lens red and the other cyan (greenish-blue color), the observer of Giovanni’s art can experience threedimensional depth as in real life. His 3D compositions draw your eye into a world that only he sees. But with the aid of Giovanni’s photography and other medium he manipulates
the subject’s personality. When the picture-taking is complete, Giovanni studies each photo to see how to make it perfect — through enhancement, not elimination.
Currently, Giovanni is experimenting with a brand new concept he calls “Explosion.” It is 3D, but it also expresses movement.
Giovanni’s studio is the largest and most complete on the Gulf Coast. A person need only show up and professional makeup, hair styling, clothing, jewelry, and touchups are provided. Giovanni is a wizard with light — whether natural or artificial. His portraits not only radiate the person’s natural beauty and uniqueness, but he never fails to capture

Giovanni explains, “The cuts through the images let us search a world beyond the limits of a photographic picture. The objects give more depth to the photos — shadows, movement, and color which give insight and life to the images. The work is then confined by thick shadowboxes which create a separate dimension for the art to live in — a dimension with its own constraints, light, colors and atmosphere.
“In the past few years my work has expanded in a new direction. ‘Explosion’ is a project that pushed me to search in each piece a strong and constant movement realized with exploded photographs overlaid one on top of the other. The explosion can be the result of many factors: speed, sound, wind, etc. “The subjects for the ‘Explosion’ series are very diverse in nature: people, animals, plants, vehicles or other inanimate objects. The observer is captivated by the movement of the images, but the art is bound by dark shadowboxes that confines it in a surrealistic way to keep it from escaping.” Giovanni is concurrently gearing up to create a black and white exposé of the real beauty, handsomeness, and the uniqueness of the 21st century citizens who live on the Gulf Coast — those distinctive, hardworking, down-toearth people. And, oh by the way, in 2015 Giovanni became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Open your eyes and see what he sees and discover the world of Giovanni Lunardi.

Surprising Statistics
T
he Research Division of the National Association of REALTORS® recently published a report on the profile of international home buyers in Florida, and it revealed a few surprises. Many of us already know that Florida is a major destination for foreign real estate buyers – those who purchase primary residences, second homes and investment properties here. About 25% of all foreign buyers choose to make their purchase in the Sunshine State, and Florida has consistently been in the top 3 states for international investment over recent years. Latest research reveals that, over the past year: •
•
•
44,000 Florida properties have sold to international buyers. This represents 12% of Florida’s residential sales, down from 15% of our market in the preceding year. Those 44,000 sales represent $23.7 billion or 24% of the dollar volume of sales in our State. This is up from 19% in the preceding year. So, foreigners are buying fewer homes, but they are spending more on the homes they do buy.
On average, overseas buyers spent $538,600 on a home last year, compared to $300,600 in the previous year. The median price for foreign buyers was also up from $209,600 to $297,300 and they tend to purchase more expensive homes than local buyers. The average local buyer price was $258,200 compared with $538,600 for foreign buyers. While Chinese buyers still represent a fairly small percentage of our market, they tend to favor more expensive homes,

The relative strength or weakness of the U.S. Dollar in world currency markets does have an impact on incoming investment. The economic and financial challenges of recent years have not been kind to the Canadian Dollar, Euro and British Pound. Canadians, Brits and citizens of the Euro Zone have traditionally shown great interest in Florida real estate. What impact has the stronger dollar had on their investment here, and where are the buyers coming from?

Canadians have always been a major player in our market as they purchase homes to escape the winter months, but their participation last year dropped. They fell from representing 32% of our overseas buyers to just 11%. Buyers from Europe also declined but by a lesser extent. Their lack of participation in the Florida real estate was made up for by Venezuelans who made up 18% of the market compared with only 3% in the previous year. South American buyers generally increased, with additional participation from Argentina, Brazil and Columbia in particular. Miami and Fort Lauderdale markets seemed to benefit most from the increased South American activity, while our own Gulf Coast market remained the top destination for Canadians. International buyers will continue to play an important role in the Florida real estate market but the countries they

come from may vary based upon relative currency strengths and other economic drivers. The main reasons cited by foreigners as to why they chose NOT to buy a home in Florida were the increase in purchase price and running costs (combination of our rising market and their weakening currency), lack of available homes, and challenges of financing and immigration.
