skirt, only ¾ complete in circumference, is causally layered over a knee-length skirt to create a cutout in the shape of a perfect square. This is formalwear for free spirits: a tailored tuxedo vest worn over bohemian layers and asymmetrical hems.
This collection is feminine and easily wearable due to its fluid, lightweight fabrics and relaxed proportions. This methodical approach is also evident in the color palette, a distinctly “Cucinelli” array of muted neutrals, which serve as the brand’s unofficial logo. Play with different tones of creamy neutrals (milk, flour, rice, walnut) for a nuanced monochromatic look; like this sleeveless coat with silk inset for a layered look, reversible washed silk tank, garment-washed denim pants, braided leather belt, cashmere hat, leather fringe handbag and oxford leather shoes with monili cap toe. This intricately varied, yet harmonious palette allows for a certain ease when layering everything together. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Mr. Cucinelli—or Brunello as he insists on being called; Cucinelli represents a purity of design that flatters he has built a utopian brand of laid-back luxury the body and resonates with the soul. The collection’s more mathematical angle came easily to Brunello due to his early engineering background and love for Greek philosophy. On the runway, geometrically cut garments played with angular asymmetry and proportion. As demonstrated in the photo, an ankle-length chiffon

Stress And Hair Loss By Sheila Venancia The hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT, which then harms hair follicles, happens in both men and women. Under normal conditions, women have a minute fraction of the level of testosterone that men have, but even a lower level can cause DHT- triggered hair loss in women. Mistakenly thought to be a strictly male disease, women make up a significant percentage of American hair loss sufferers. Forty percent of women have visible hair loss by the time they are age 40, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Hair loss in women can be absolutely devastating for self-image and emotional well-being. Three types of hair loss that can be associated with high stress levels are: •
•
•
Alopecia Areata - A variety of factors are thought to cause alopecia areata, possibly including severe stress. With alopecia areata, white blood cells attack the hair follicle, stopping hair growth and making hair fall out. Telogen Effluvium - In this condition, emotional or physical stress pushes large numbers of growing hairs into a resting phase. Within a few months, the affected hairs may fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair. Trichotillomania - Trichotillomania (trik-oh-til-ohmay-nee-uh) is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, anxiety, tension, loneliness, fatigue or frustration.
Tests for Hair Loss in Women – Diagnose •

hormone, and leutinizing hormone) Serum iron, serum ferritin, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) Thyroid levels (T3, T4, TSH) VDRL (a screening test for syphilis) Complete blood count (CBC) Scalp biopsy - A small section of scalp, usually 4 mm in diameter, is removed and examined under a microscope to help determine the cause of hair loss. Hair pull - A doctor lightly pulls a small amount of hair (about 100 strands) to determine if there is excessive loss. If more that 3 hairs come out, then the patient is likely suffering from excess hair loss. Normal range is one to three hairs per pull. Densitometry - The densitometer is a handheld magnification device used to check for miniaturization of the hair shaft.
Hair Loss Treatment Minoxidil was first used in tablet form as a medicine to treat high blood pressure (an antihypertensive). It was noticed that patients being treated with minoxidil developed excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis) as a side effect. Further research showed that applying a solution of minoxidil directly to the scalp could also stimulate hair growth. The effectiveness of these agents and methods varies from person to person, but many women have found that using these treatments have made a positive difference in their hair and their self-esteem. As always, treatments have the best chance of being effective if they are geared to the cause of the hair loss as well as to triggering hair growth. “Don’t forget, your hair is very important ... and so is your health”

Is Your Commercial Property “Grandfathered” To Offer Relief From Some ADA Requirements? By William Henry, PhD How Does the Term “Readily Achievable” Apply to this “Grandfathering” Provision? When addressing the challenges posed by American Disability Act legislation, business and commercial property owners often ask, “Is my property ‘grandfathered’ so as to alleviate the need for compliance?” Compliance hinges on the date of occupancy of the inhabitable space. The operative date is January 1, 1991. Was the property inhabited prior to 1991? If so, then compliance may not be required if the cures to the design and construction are deemed to be not “readily achievable”. Both owners and their legal counsels often ask what constitutes the criteria for determining whether required cures are necessary under the law. Does the designation of prescribed ADA cures deemed to be not “readily achievable” offer any relief? On first blush, many property owners’ legal counsels and/or their forensic experts opine that making significant expensive changes to the property improvements creates an “undue burden.” What constitutes an undue burden? An undue burden on the property owner may be created if codes mandate technically implausible solutions that may be cost prohibitive. Business owners are often allowed to factor in the impacts to their operations. The U.S. Department of Justice suggests the following factors to be considered: 1. The nature and cost of the curative improvements needed. 2. The overall financial resources of the property owner; the number of persons employed at the site; the effect on expenses and resources; legitimate safety requirements; and/or the impact otherwise of the action on the operation of the site. 3. The geographic separateness from and the administrative or fiscal relationship of the site to, any parent corporation or entity. 4. If applicable, the overall size and financial resources of any parent corporation or entity, including the number of employees and the number, type, and location of its facilities. 5. If applicable, the type of operation or operations of any parent corporation or entity, including the composition, structure, and functions of the workforce of the parent
corporation or entity. Is this an extensive and costly remodel or a low-cost maintenance issue? Is it affordable and are there any risks in barrier removal? While there is often no clear answer to these questions posed, business owners are afforded a degree of flexibility in achieving code compliance. When it comes to prioritizing the recommended cures, the following is the priority ranking. 1. The first priority is access to the facility. This includes physical access paths from public sidewalks, public transportation, and accessible parking through the front door. 2. The second priority is accessible routes to the goods and services made available to the public. In the case of a retail store, this includes the front desk and display areas. 3. The third priority is access to restrooms. If restrooms are provided for use by customers or clients, then an accessible restroom must be provided 4. The fourth priority is removing any remaining barriers. In conclusion, ADA regulations require perfection in a nonperfect world. Sometimes, relatively flat accessible routes for wheelchair bound individuals must traverse undulating terrain. In other cases, toilet stalls must be widened between two immovable structural supports. Chair lifts, elevators, and other costly devices must be installed in older non-adaptable structures. If you are a business or commercial property owner responsible for ADA compliance and the improvements are constructed and inhabited prior to 1991, it is important to retain an expert to collaborate with legal counsel to determine whether the mandated measures are in fact “readily achievable.” Why not enlist your civil engineer for the job? In the event that a complaint is filed by a disabled person, a business owner may decide to defer receiving a detailed deficiency report. A civil engineer often times confirms the plaintiff’s findings, which then pose the threat of becoming discoverable by the plaintiff’s attorney. Choosing an expert with experience in construction methods and cost control is key in identifying a cost-effective cure and mitigating the need for changes to your facility. Checkmate A large percentage of females enjoy beach volleyball as well. Their level of play ranks right up there with the male teams. Here we see some serious jousting taking place.
It all started in 1977, when a group of avid volleyball players in Long Island took the game to a new venue: the beach. “We played coordinated events in the winter,” recalls Rich Heiles, a founding member of East End Volleyball (EEVB). “Though the volleyball community was already playing on beaches during the summer, we didn’t have formal competitions.” That summer they launched their inaugural beach volleyball competition, a small event on Long Island that featured a single tournament.

formidable opponents Rafael Del Valle and Omar Vargas. EEVB has gone on to sponsor a team on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour in order to promote the organization and inspire its players.
“We saw really solid players training and practicing within the organization,” says Rich. “In addition to players who went pro, we also noticed a cache of talented younger participants who simply enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the fun.”
As enthusiasm grew, so did participation. Tremendous talent was cultivated on those sandy courts, and beach volleyball came into its own. By 1987 EEVB was in fullswing, hosting an invitation-only event that showcased the game and its culture to local media. Volleyball greats Karch Kiraly, Brent Frohoff and Scott Ayakatubby proved their
Throughout the years, notable players have plied their skills at EEVB matches, earning cash prizes and wowing spectators and fans with their athletic prowess. Beach volleyball is, Rich notes, a healthy activity that’s suited for players at all levels. At his home base in Long Island, he says, there are 50 to 100 courts every night hosting athletes ranging in age from their late teens to over 60. “Everyone finds their niche,” he observes. “The league features highly competitive plays and individuals who are simply out for exercise and fun.” The Gulf Coast, with its top-rated white sand beaches, has proven an ideal location for EEVB-sponsored tournaments. With spring and fall events held at world-renowned Siesta and Lido Keys, the

organization has carefully planted the seeds for a grassroots movement in beach volleyball. With their first local tournament nearly 20 years ago, EEVB introduced 12 nets to the Siesta Key community. Today, April and October tournaments feature upwards of 31 nets. The growth has been steady, though Rich sees potential for greater regional participation. “The beaches here are ideally suited for an established, year ‘round volleyball league,” he states. “I would love to see the program move beyond tournaments.” Recreational volleyball leagues, says Rich, contribute to the well-being of their communities in a myriad of ways. “You’re bringing healthy activities to families and individuals, providing a great outlet for people to engage in friendly competition,” he observes. “But volleyball leagues can also yield significant financial benefits.” He cites Long Island’s thriving beach volleyball league as a prime example. “Local governments are earning over one hundred thousand dollars each year in beach rent alone,” Rich states. “And local businesses benefit, because they’re seeing increased activity and patronage in the areas where these leagues are active.” A strategic alliance with Volleyball America has allowed EEVB to maximize its national reach to over 6,000 players competing in 35+ events each year. With each tournament, players earn national ranking points and qualify for end-of-the-season cash prizes. “It would make sense for a local group to work with Volleyball America in implementing an ongoing league here in Sarasota,” Rich remarks. “This region has the potential to become one of the country’s premier volleyball destinations, bringing in visitors and competitors to stay and play.” With existing tournaments and events occurring throughout the 30 | REAL Exclusive | GetRealExclusive.com
area, adds Rich, a cohesive approach to the sport of beach volleyball would maximize participation and spectatorship. “You really can’t beat the benefits of beach volleyball,” says Rich, who continues to play in his local league. “It’s a healthy and fun lifestyle that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and walks of life.”

Bowler Hats, Briefcases and The Bank of England British Icons in the City of London By Patricia Tan During my recent trip to England, I had several meetings in the City of London, Britain’s financial district, where I worked during the 1980s and 90s. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be in “The City” doing business again – completely different from simply being a tourist and visiting the many historic sites there.
famous briefcase in Britain has to be the one used by the Chancellor the Exchequer to carry his annual budget speech to the Houses of Parliament. This red, rather battered briefcase was originally used in 1860, retired in 1965 but made a brief appearance again in 2000s before being placed in The National Archives.
So much of being British stems from our ancient heritage and traditions, and nowhere are these more evident than in the City. The “square mile” as it is also known is the oldest part of London and yet still functions as the heart of Britain’s business and financial activities. Hard to believe that old customs, not to mention old buildings, can adapt to deal with the hi-tech age we live in today. I thought it might be fun to look at some of the things, big and small, that have become representative of the City and its financial lifeblood.
The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, as the Bank of England is affectionately known, sits majestically at the intersection of nine roads, making it a truly central feature of the City. Established in 1694, the Bank of England is the second oldest bank in the world. Its current building dates back to 1734 and was the first purpose built bank. The building itself is very impressive, and even more so when you understand how vast its underground vaults are. This is where the U.K.’s gold reserves are stored, and building a secure facility in 1734 must have had its challenges.
Invented in 1849, the bowler hat is often thought of as being synonymous with the City. Despite the best efforts of Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin, most people think of the bowler hat as part of the City gent’s uniform, worn by city workers during the 1950s and 60s. I did see a few of these hats during my visit, and I’m told that around 5,000 bowler hats are sold annually. The briefcase began its life in the 1800s and is so called because it was used by barristers and lawyers to carry legal documents (briefs) to court. The City also houses the Inns of Court – the professional associations for barristers in England and Wales, Some of the Inns are housed in buildings that date back to the 16th century. The most
Land in the square mile and surrounding areas is coveted for the development of office and commercial buildings, but resourceful developers have come up with some very inventive ways of introducing residential accommodation into the landscape. I approached one of our U.K. partners and asked them to send me some illustrations of this. I hope you will agree that both of the homes pictured here combine modern living with a respect for Britain’s traditions and historic buildings. I’m sure the architects of the original buildings could not have conceived how their creations might be re-purposed, nor could they have imagined the price tag they might carry in a future world.

Suncoast Charities for Children A Foundation for Success By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa Suncoast Charities for Children has made a unique contribution to the well-being of children, teens and adults with special needs. The Sarasota-based charity offers (virtually) rent-free facilities to local area non-profits, allowing them to focus their funding on programs and services. As local needs have evolved, so have the efforts of Suncoast Charities; the organization has significantly increased its fundraising efforts, reaching out to the community with an array of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others. The Super Boat Grand Prix began with a group of local businessmen, primarily from the construction industry. Founders included Hollis Tucker, John Stafford, Ron Foxworthy, Cal Erb and the late Gene Whipp. The organization (then known as the Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped, Inc.) was launched as a means of combining Whipp’s passion for powerboat racing with a desire to expand the opportunities available to help children with special needs. The group’s early endeavors included an annual picnic outing to the beach. As the organization grew, Whipp launched the first annual offshore powerboat race in Sarasota, which ran between St. Pete and Venice, Florida. The concept gained popularity, expanding from a single race to a nine day festival now featuring golf, a texas hold’ em poker tournament, car show, motorcycle charity ride, boat and personal watercraft fun run, a parade of boats and block party, powerboats by the bay, meet & greet reception with participating race teams, a fashion show, a stunning fireworks display, fishing day for the physically and mentally challenged, and the signature Grand Prix Race. “There is something for everyone,” remarks Lucy Nicandri, who serves as Suncoast Charities’ Vice President. “Our organization has really captured the spirit of our community, creating opportunities for people with diverse interests to come together to support a great cause and also generate an huge economic impact ($14.3 Million in 2012). The Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival is one of the organization’s most high-profile fundraising events, but area residents have access to year ‘round activities whose proceeds 34 | REAL Exclusive | GetRealExclusive.com

contribute to the charity. Each year kicks off with the Thunder by the Bay Motorcycle Festival, a four-day celebration that attracts individuals from around the country. Also an annual charity night sponsored by the Sarasota Kennel Club, a Sarasota Bayfront Fireworks Spectacular July 4th and New Year’s Eve, Fisk and Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament, and the Christmas Boat Parade of Lights raise funds that are integral to the success and sustainability of Suncoast Charities for Children.
Children First Pre-School Students
With over $14 million in facilities constructed throughout Sarasota, Venice and North Port areas, Suncoast Charities has provided upward of 73,000 square feet of space to local organizations including Children First, Loveland Center, Community Haven, The Florida Center, Children First, and Sarasota County Special Olympics. These non-profit groups pay $1 per year in rent, with maintenance provided by Suncoast Charities for Children for the duration of their tenancy. Most of the facilities constructed over the years also received donated products and services from area businesses in the construction industry such as plumbers, roofers, electricians, and dry wall. The construction industry contributed many resources and services to the charities that currently occupy the buildings constructed by Suncoast Charities for Children,” says Nicandri. “With subsidized repairs and maintenance, our non-profits are maximizing their program and service monies.” The impact, Nicandri adds, is significant. “We receive calls from parents of clients at local organizations, thanking us for our fundraising events.
