The Dog Days Of Summer The term "dog days" was coined by the ancient Romans, who called these hot and humid days caniculares dies or "days of the dogs" after the star Sirius, Canis Majoris, the "Greater Dog," which is one of the hunting dogs of Orion, the Hunter in the constellation that bears his name. The ancient Egyptians named Sirius the "dog star" after their god Osiris, who was often depicted as having the head of a dog. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that it was once thought that it produced heat. In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the sun, and beginning in July, the two stars are in conjunction. In the latitude of the Mediterranean region, this period coincided with sweltering days that were plagued with disease and discomfort. The Dog Days are officially counted as 20 starting days before the conjunction and continuing to 20 days afterward which spans July and August, which are hottest and muggiest part of the season. The ancients believed that the heat from Sirius added to the heat of the sun during this period of conjunction, created a stretch of especially hot and sultry weather. Hence, Dog Days. The conjunction of Sirius with the sun varies somewhat with latitude. And the "precession of the equinoxes" (a gradual drifting of the constellations over time) means that the constellations today are not in exactly the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Egypt and Rome. Although the Dog Days are certainly the warmest period of the summer, the heat is not due to the added radiation from a far-away star, regardless of its brightness. Nor is summer's heat in the Northern Hemisphere caused by our proximity to the sun. Earth is actually furthest away from the solar heat lamp in summer. But, because of the tilt of its axis in relation to the sun, we are blasted by a direct hit of fiery heat. As I write this, the heat index is upward of 115 degrees. This summer is especially bad, with extreme heat waves sweeping much of North America. Our tempers are on boil and even the most innocuous disturbance is enough to send us over the emotional edge. Time out! Cool down! Mama Donna Henes

Bling It Home By Ed Bertha
Running through August 14, 2011 at the Sarasota Film Festival, Beyond Bling: Voices of Hip-Hop in Art, focuses on the work of ten artists influenced by hip-hop culture. When the show ends another begins. What started as an exchange of Facebook posts between Vince Fraser (best known locally for his Sarasota Film Festival face posters) and myself quickly turned into Bling it Home. After Beyond Bling ends Fraser’s Bling creations, Bling Pop and Work and Play, move to Westfield Southgate Shopping Mall. There they will be on display in the alcove outside Saks Fifth Avenue for a month, setting the stage for a sealed bid auction benefiting the Sarasota Film Festival and Habitat for Humanity Sarasota. Bling it Home will feature an intimate meet and greet with Fraser and culminate with a gala event where the fortunate bidder(s) will leave with their treasures. Vince Fraser (b.1971) is a London based digital illustrator whose clients include the Sarasota Film Festival, British Airways, PC World, the BBC and T-Mobile. Over the last decade Fraser has specialized in digital illustration ranging from 2d vector work, photo montage, image manipulation and 3d modeling. His working method of combining photographic, typographic and vector illustration (the use of geometric forms to represent images in
computer graphics) are layered together much like the layers of music and text that are combined in hip-hop music. Fraser himself agrees with this analogy saying, "In the same way I fuse two different elements together
to create something new and unique, hip hop icons like Run DMC did the same revolutionizing a new hybrid sub musical genre called rap/rock with Aerosmith." Bling it Home is a REAL

Work and Play Canvas: 3/16” Plexiglas Dimensions: 90”x60” (7’6”x5’) Retail: $14,500 Opening Bid: $5,000 Work and play represents that work doesn’t have to be boring — it can be exciting, something you look forward to, an outlet for your creativity and imagination. It can be play. In this piece Fraser confronts the viewer with a fantasy of what that space could be. The two male figures that make up the central part of the composition are enthroned and surrounded by wings reminiscent of the eagle adorning the throne of Zeus. These gods of the hip hop lifestyle compete in the VIP lounge with the pink haired club goddess.
“I love creating fantasy worlds
and abstract characters in surreal settings.”
Bling Pop Canvas: 3/16” Plexiglas Dimensions: 90”x60” (7’6”x5’) Retail: $15,000 Opening Bid: $5,500 Bling Pop is a portrait of hip hop singer and producer Pharrell. In this piece Fraser merges the concepts of traditional portraiture and an aesthetic of advertising. The result is an image that strips away the pretence of the canonical genre and lays bare the true intention of the portrait - the advertising of a constructed persona in which both the subject and the artist are complicit. In contemporary parlance, portraiture is the forming of a brand. This point is underscored by the layering of the symbol of the bling lifestyle, the BMW on top of Pharrell's torso and further reinforcing the explicitness of the image with the word "Bling" appearing like a tattoo. Fraser effortlessly bridges this divide, superimposing visually and rhythmically complex layers of digital imagery with every bit as much virtuosity as any leading hip-hop DJ.

per p esr p s pee c c tt i viev s es Backfilling Large Empty Retail Boxes With Out Of The Box Uses By William Henry PhD
The Internet is Siphoning Retail Sales from Traditional 'Bricks and Mortar' Stores and Thereby Contributing to Vacancies The 600 pound gorilla at the recent retail convention in Las Vegas known as ‘RECON’ which is an acronym for the ‘The Global Retail Real Estate Convention’, was the siphoning of some retail activity into the internet. A common complaint by some traditional retailers and building developers is that various sales transactions over the internet are not taxed and therefore those retailers who are better known for their ‘bricks and mortar’ presence suffer. Younger store patrons are often seen with their iphones scanning the bar codes of merchandise in well known stores and then simply walking away and ordering the merchandise via some internet distributor who can often undercut the price and eliminate the sales tax burden as well. The large retailers belittle the impact to store sales by stating that most patrons continue to ‘enjoy the social benefit of shopping’ and believe that most folks will continue to patronize the stores despite this growing trend by the ‘under 30 something crowd’. However the ‘millenniums’ seem to get most of their socialization needs met over the internet as well, and if they travel to socialize, can be found at sporting events and other entertainment venues. Some analysts represent that over 22% of all retail sales in some market segments occur over the internet vs. the more traditional market place transactions conducted in stores or malls. Backfilling Empty Retail Space With Other Retail Tenants Is Unlikely to Make a Dent in Vacancy Rates This trend is disturbing to traditionalists who demonstrate their deep denial by
scrambling after the remnant of other viable retailers to backfill vacant retail properties. They hope to ’slice and dice’ large vacant boxes with smaller retail tenants who will be willing to pay comparable rents to those paid by the vacating party. This play has not panned out too well with today’s consumer who is less willing to part with cash for discretionary purchases of retail goods and services. Unfortunately the landlords have not recognized that these economic tendencies are likely the result of long term structural changes and not the result of a short term economic downturn. 'Out of the Box Building Uses' Often Not Considered When Leasing Retail Space When posed with the logical alternative to backfill vacant space with other uses such as outpatient clinics, charter
schools, churches, and even multi-family residential, those with substantial retail property holdings rebuff such overtures in public representations. However while turning the blind eye to these viable 21st century uses may seem inexplicable, this apparent 'walk away tactic' is more for the consumption of the retail brokerage community who the landlords seek to ‘incentive-ize’ to continue their search for retail tenant prospects. In private the discussions take on a different, more accepting tone. ANY viable use will be entertained as long as most of the store modifications can be borne by the tenant and not the landlord. This bodes well for the more creative and innovative brokers and architects who can help visualize and facilitate backfilling these vacant spaces with alternative uses in a cost effective and practical manner. RGA is one of those design companies.

John Cannon and John Cannon Homes:
A Reputation Built on Quality By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa | Lifestyle Photography by Giovanni Lunardi
An award-winning home builder with a solid foundation of success, John Cannon continues to set the standard by which others are measured. His homes are solid, substantial and stunning. His business continues to evolve to meet the ongoing needs of an increasingly savvy clientele. And his commitment to quality is unwavering. From new construction to substantial renovations, John Cannon is raising the bar on residential building throughout the Gulf Coast region. John’s industry experience is a comprehensive blend of educational knowledge and practical implementation; he earned a degree in Building Construction from Michigan State University and has gone on to build over 1,000 custom homes. After launching his career with a national builder, John created his own company. John Cannon Homes, a venture developed with the assistance of his wife Phillipa, has grown into a full-service firm that includes construction, remodeling, design and property management divisions. The company runs smoothly and efficiently thanks to a thoughtful and well-planned structure, designed to maximize efficacy and provide an exceptional client experience. A cerebral builder who takes a thoughtful approach to his business and his work, John acknowledges the tremendous level of support that his extensive team provides. Subcontractors, architectural designers, interior designers and sales and marketing specialists work together to offer clients a congruent experience throughout the process of creating their custom homes. “They have adapted to my non-traditional world,” he quips, noting that he is as Left: John in front of his office
comfortable collaborating with clients as he is with lending professionals. John’s vision is a broad one; he is imaginative and pragmatic, which has allowed him to cultivate a solid and growing business while offering a unique product to each customer. “A builder achieves longevity by maintaining a successful balance between the creative and practical aspects of the business,” John observes. “I’m fortunate to have the ability to combine these characteristics effectively. I have an intuitive sense of numbers, which has enabled me to grow a sustainable and solid company even during challenging economic conditions. I also truly enjoy the creative element of my work. This allows me to create unique homes that reflect and complement each client’s distinct lifestyle, while never compromising quality.” The Cannon Homes experience is one that is tailored to each client’s unique wants and needs. The company’s evolution and growth is the direct result of John’s desire to facilitate a concierge approach in the home building process, and he has successfully established a new standard for customer care. From clean-sheet designs to modifications on existing model homes or renovations of their current residences, clients work with the Cannon Homes team from start to finish, enjoying the convenience of an all-inclusive process that includes interior design and furnishing. An on-site design center features high-end appliances, fixtures, finishes and materials used throughout each home, eliminating the need for clients to seek out their own products based on builder allowances. “From cabinets to roof tiles, we have a beautifully-appointed showroom that allows our clients to maintain a sense of cohesiveness and consistency, both in the process of designing and in the finished product itself,” explains John. “The showroom alone drastically reduces the stress, time and effort involved in creating a custom home. It also puts all of the visual components in one place so that our clients can truly see how their color and design schemes will work together throughout the home.” Throughout the building process, clients are provided photos and updates on the status of their homes. per p esr p s pee c c tt i viev s es Tips for Buying a Property Overseas By Patricia Tan
The “world is becoming smaller every day”, or so the saying goes. Advances in technology and transport have certainly allowed many of us to easily experience other countries and cultures. Those experiences often lead to a desire to relocate to another country, or at least purchase a property there so you may enjoy spending longer periods in that area. Alternatively, certain parts of the world may be seen as better than others as far as real estate investment is concerned. Whatever the motivation, the decision to buy real estate in another country is not one that should be taken lightly. In recent years we have worked actively in a number of countries, including The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, France, Italy and the U.K. As international realtors, buyers often ask us how they should go about making a purchase of real estate in another country. Here are my top tips: • Conduct extensive research on the country and area in which you are interested. There are many resources on the internet to help you do this before you even leave home. • Be sure to check for developments that are planned for a particular area – commercial buildings, residential neighborhoods and infrastructure – roads, sewer, water etc. Look at the
track record of local government and developers. Have they delivered on their promises? • Check current and planned transport links. The addition of a new airport or road system can have a dramatic impact on an area’s desirability and property prices. Conversely, poor access can have a detrimental effect. For instance, consider the many British investors who bought property in parts of Europe based on the availability of cheap flights from discount airlines. As the recession took hold, many of those airlines discontinued service to certain locations, making it costly and time consuming for home owners to get access to their property, and limiting the market for resale. • Spend as much time as you can speaking to locals – they know best what is going on in their area. This is easy to do when visiting the area, but consider using online social networks as well.
• Be aware that real estate agents in other countries may not be licensed or controlled by the government. They may not have experience in dealing with foreign buyers, and may not be in a position to give best advice. Look for an agent who has taken the time to invest in an international real estate qualification.
Bahamas beachfront cottage. Part of a development by a Sarasota-based company.
• Visit your desired destination at different times of the year. See how the seasons affect your enjoyment. The busy summer destination can be deserted in winter and vice versa. • When working with a builder, developer or agent, check their credentials. Ask to talk to former clients. If you are buying a new property or something that is under construction, ask to see proof that the developer owns the land and has a license to build. In some countries you may need the services of an attorney to effectively check the financial standing and track record of business people. • Always choose an English-speaking attorney, who has an understanding of the legal system in your chosen country. They can be located in that country, or in your home country but with experience of the market in which you intend to invest.

r er a e al l c ca rae sr e s The Special Day Foundation -
Creating an atmosphere for people to define their own special day By Kacey C. Krznaric
The Special Day Foundation: The Special Day Foundation (SDF), based in Sarasota, Florida is an organization established in 2008, providing a very eclectic mélange of services for the often overlooked population of Southwest Gulf Coast Floridians with special needs. SDF is unique in that they offer a seemingly dissimilar combination of services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, coupling outdoor adventures like boating and fishing activities with securing and funding good quality dental healthcare with experienced dental professionals. On the surface, the two services might not seem like a likely pairing as it is not common for a nonprofit organization to offer both recreational activities, as well as therapeutic and/or restorative dental procedures for a select demographic of the population. However, then-researching consultant Rene Burke, was asked by a group of philanthropic citizens to perform extensive studies on the specific needs of this target population in the Southwest Gulf Coast Florida area. Surprisingly, her findings exhibited a lack of recreational and social activities and a significant shortage in both funding and accessibility to dental professionals equipped to handle some of the more complex cases that exist among the intellectually and developmentally disabled population. Burke presented her research findings, proposal, and complete business plan to the group, signifying the inception of the SDF and her appointment as the Foundation Director, 46

directing and managing SDF on behalf of the Board of Directors. As the Special Day Foundation began reaching out to the community and establishing their presence in the area, they had the opportunity to partner with the University of Florida’s Dental School and Mount Sinai Medical Center to work toward the common goal of providing preventive dental care and improving oral functionality among this disadvantaged group where dental care is often overlooked. SDF Board member Randy Lyon has a special appreciation for the work the UF Dental School does for their patients. “It was a very fulfilling moment to be able to speak at the Dental School, thanking them for the work they do and presenting them with a check to express our gratitude,” recounts Lyon of his speech at the UF Dental School graduation ceremony. While Lyon is able to use his realestate business connections to advance the work of SDF, he is able to network socially toward SDF’s future goal of implementing some major fundraising events. In addition, while Burke is able to use her nursing background to manage the medical complexities that go along with securing specialized dental healthcare for the patients that receive these benefits from the Foundation, she also has the opportunity to participate in the recreational activities provided by SDF. One of her most fond memories came from a boating/adaptive fishing expedition where one of the participants was thrilled to just put her
hand in the bait bucket. “She was so excited and energetic to be there,” says Burke, “I knew it was a very proud and meaningful moment for not only her, but her family as well.” (941) 225.3103 www.specialdayfoundation.org info@specialdayfoundation.org P.O. When the best golfers in the world are competing at their highest level of play, they often utilize two strategies called the “Think Box”
Next, the golfer will cross the “Decision Line” and step into the “Play Box”. This is where there should be no other thoughts other than to aim, address the ball, and execute the golf shot.
