CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE FOR YOU

Our courses have more of a practical side to them than courses in sixth forms and some other colleges. If you have an interest in subjects such as Biology, Physics or Maths why not explore this with one of our courses like Animal Management, Agriculture, Horticulture, Sport or Engineering? Studying a course with us will help prepare you to move onto work or higher-level study.

Industry focused courses

In addition to the practical experience you will gain whilst studying at college, our T Levels and diplomas include relevant work placements. This will give you that much needed work experience to get you started in your first job.

Our tutors are industry experts with extensive experience in their field and we’re sector leading in our choice of qualifications. We work closely with industry to drive the development of these forward-thinking qualifications. It’s these excellent links with employers which means you’ll leave college with the skills and knowledge industry wants and needs.

Our new T Level courses also have a lot of input from employers and include work placements and real life industry projects to ensure you are career ready.

You can study a subject you have a real interest in, as well as gain real-life experience whilst working in our industry standard facilities – over recent years we’ve invested £80 million into state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

Our aim is for students to progress from Reaseheath not only work or university ready, but as confident individuals ready for life.

Preparation for further study

If you are hoping to progress onto further study, our range of Level 3 Diplomas, T Levels and Tech Baccs offer a great alternative to A Levels and will give you the UCAS points and study skills needed if your goal is to progress on to university.

How we differ from sixth form

Our technical programmes are academic and practical, often offer opportunities for additional qualifications and study tours and will prepare you for employment or further study. You will be studying alongside students with similar interests in a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment.

Your study programme is only one aspect of the Reaseheath Experience. Reaseheath boasts a beautiful, unique campus with extensive facilities giving you the opportunity to participate in a range of varied and exciting social and recreational activities. Many of our students make even more of their Reaseheath experience by living in our halls of residence.

T LEVELS

We are excited to announce that in addition to our Diplomas, Tech Baccs and Apprenticeships, we are also now offering T Levels in a number of courses.

What are T Levels?

T Levels are a new qualification for 16–18-yearolds, introduced by the Government to give you more options to gain those essential workplace skills and experience.

These exciting programmes are the equivalent of A Levels but with the addition of a substantial work placement and are key to the Government’s ambitious programme to provide the technical expertise for the jobs of the future. They offer a mix of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience which includes a substantial industry placement of at least 315 hours.

Why should I study a T Level?

These new qualifications, which take two years to complete, have been designed with industry experts to provide you with the skills employers are looking for. They will enable you to thrive in the workplace while giving businesses the workforce they need to succeed.

As well as gaining technical knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience specific to your industry, you’ll also learn relevant maths, English and digital skills. When you complete your T Level you’ll get a nationally recognised certificate which will look great on your CV!

You may also have the option to study a Level 3 Maths qualification alongside your T Level.

Am I suited to studying a T Level?

T Levels offer a technical route into your chosen industry and would be a good option if you’re looking for an alternative to a purely academic A Level route. If you don’t have the entry requirements for a T Level, you could study a one year Level 2 T-Up transition programme.

Lexi’s story

Lexi Dean Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma Age: 27 Next step: Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship Ambition: Royal Veterinary Association (RVA) Registered Veterinary Nurse

“Reaseheath has been hugely influential in my life. I’d had some unfulfilling jobs and wanted to improve my prospects and grow in confidence, but my Access to HE course took me much further.

“I wanted the skills and knowledge to work with animals, so I decided to follow my Mum, who did the Access course at Reaseheath in 2009. The course alone is proof of a qualification, and really interesting, but it was through my studies that I was introduced to the clinical side of animal health and decided to become a vet nurse.

“I now do a weekly shift with a Medivet small animal practice in Liverpool, where I’m mentored by two nurses and a surgeon. The practice has offered me a vet nursing apprenticeship so I’ll be returning to academic study at Reaseheath.”

“ I enjoyed so many experiences and opportunities at Reaseheath. I was encouraged to try different things and to develop my own unique skills set.

“ Becoming a Reaseheath zoo guide and getting involved in summer schools made me think seriously about becoming an educator, specialising in natural history and conservation. It’s really important that we inspire the next generation to care for the natural world.

“ While I was an undergraduate I gained a Youth Leadership Award, and I also became Vice Chair and then Chair of Chester Zoo’s Youth Board. We were tasked with helping to shape the zoo’s future and strengthen its appeal to teenagers and young adults. I’ve now set up a forest school and I also work as a Wildlife Trust educator, so I feel I’ve achieved a lot.”

Next step: Progress up dressage levels Ambition: Dressage rider and coach or vet receptionist

“I’m a member of British Dressage (BD) and regularly compete my mare at novice and elementary level. Last year we won the Petplan Equine Area Festival at novice level and competed at the national finals, while this year we’ve been selected for the BD home international and inter regional teams, so we’re doing well.

“ We’re training at medium level and I’m keen to see how far we can go. I get extra coaching at college because I’m a member of Reaseheath’s National Schools Equestrian Association squad, and I enjoy those competitions too. It was also fun taking part in the drill ride at Reaseheath’s Family Festival.

“Apart from riding I find the biology modules really interesting, and I’ve loved making new friends who have the same interests as me.”

Next step: Possibly degree, gain business experience

Ambition: Equestrian merchandise sales and marketing

“One of the best things about becoming a student here has been representing Reaseheath in inter-college competitions. The extra coaching we get from the staff here has been massively helpful and has helped me build a better bond with my horses. I was also a member of our arena party at HOYS, which was an amazing experience and taught me a lot about working as a team alongside top course designers.

“I’ll probably keep riding as a hobby and focus on the more commercial aspects of the industry for a career, such as merchandise sales and marketing. Our course covers equine business too, so I’ll be well prepared.”

Equine apprenticeships

If you prefer hands-on learning, want to earn a wage as you learn, and you have a strong work ethic, an apprenticeship could be the perfect choice for you. You will receive one day of training a week at Reaseheath College, and the rest will be delivered in the workplace with the support of an industry assessor.

You could find yourself working as a competition groom, stud assistant or at a riding school. Some of the companies our apprentices have worked at include Friends Lane Riding School, Denstone Stud, Bazaars Stud and more.

Sam’s story

Sam Walton Level 3 National Diploma in Agriculture 2008 Job Title: Farm Manager, Lower Hurst Farm, Derbyshire

I firmly believe that it is our responsibility as farmers to educate the public about how food is produced and how farming affects the wider management of the countryside.

“My Reaseheath course didn’t just teach me about different farming practices and the commercial side of the industry, it made me aware of the ethics involved in raising farmstock and the importance of good public relations.

I can honestly say that Reaseheath has shaped me into what I am today. I’m a third generation farmer and I passionately believe in educating people about British food and farming. I’ve tried to pass on my passion throughout my career, from being Assistant Dairy Herd Manager at Reaseheath to my current role of Farm Manager at an awardwinning organic farm.”

“I came to Reaseheath after GCSEs because I know I want to work in the agricultural industry and I’m keen to get on with my career.

“I live on a dairy and sheep farm and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to carry on the family tradition and be a successful farmer. My passion is for dairy cattle and I chose to study at Reaseheath because it has such a good reputation in that area.

I’ve learned a lot about different methods of herd management, particularly as the college has a robotic milking system alongside a traditional parlour so you can compare the two systems.

“Living on campus means I’ve been able to make the most of the great social life and I’ve made loads of friends.”

Agriculture apprenticeships

If you’d prefer the apprenticeship route, we offer general farm worker and crop technician apprenticeships. You will learn all the technical skills needed for employment whilst continuing to build on your knowledge and experience. As well as working on-farm you’ll come into college to study one day a week.

Your Reaseheath Experience

Your college experience certainly isn’t limited to the campus. In 2022, our Level 3 students enjoyed potentially life changing experiences during their annual international study tour – a 1,400 mile trip around Iowa, USA. They were introduced to the best American farming practices during visits to large scale arable farms, cattle ranches and research centres, plus the Dallas County Rodeo!

Our agriculture students have also helped to bring in our silage crop using £1.85 million worth of highly sophisticated machinery on loan from leading manufacturers and suppliers. The student team were hands-on in harvesting a very heavy first cut in excess of 1500 tonnes from 170 acres over three days, taking part in the whole process from field to clamp.

All agriculture students enjoy regular visits to farms, suppliers and other relevant businesses and gain a real overview of the industry.

Job Title: Lecturer in Land and Wildlife Management

“Environmental conservation has never been more important – and it’s a great industry to work in!

I became a countryside lecturer at Reaseheath after several years as an Assistant Ranger at Tatton Park. My experiences in the industry convinced me that those working in it need to be totally professional and to possess wide ranging practical and technical skills so they truly understand how their actions impact on wildlife.

“Education is key, which is why I decided to become a lecturer and hopefully open the doors to the next generation of countryside managers. I was keen to return to Reaseheath because the college has a solid reputation for delivering the practical skills and academic learning which employers need. Our students just need to bring passion, drive and ambition.”

I’ve already gained my first aid certificate and completed a woodchipper course, and I’m looking forward to dry stone walling and working on a small meadow at college which has been set aside for wildlife.

“I would have regretted not coming to Reaseheath - nowhere else offers so many additional opportunities. On top of that the students and lecturers are very sociable and welcoming and the campus is lovely.”

“I chose to study at Reaseheath because it has such a good reputation within the floristry industry. I did some research and the college really stood out for me – particularly the great look of the student designs on Instagram.

“I’ve learned so much on my Level 2 course and the time has gone very quickly. One standout activity was working with other students to create designs to celebrate Reaseheath’s 100th birthday. It was great fun, especially as we were encouraged to work independently and as a team. We also created floral designs for other college events like the Family Festival, summer ball and student awards.

“ We opened our own artisan floristry shop in 2019 while still studying part-time for our Level 3 Diploma. We met at college and discovered we both wanted to own a floristry shop offering rustic floral designs for weddings and events.

“The business has flourished beyond all expectations and we’ve already taken on another former Reaseheath floristry student –and others on work placement. Last year we won third in the British Florist Association’s ‘Retail Shop of the Year’ and were invited to join the Good Florist Guide. Both are very prestigious within the industry and are awarded for high standards and excellent designs.

Dan’s story

Dan Appleton Level 3 Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture 2021 Job title: Arborist / tree climber with Treefellers

Being an arborist isn’t all about having fun swinging in treetops and using chainsaws –there’s a lot of technique backed by biology. To be able to trim trees properly you need to understand how they work.

Reaseheath’s course gives you a good balance between the practical and theoretical sides of arboriculture. Our classroom sessions were very interesting, particularly topics such as how trees self heal and how to prevent decay, while the practical side gave us a good grounding in how to climb trees safely and the skills and confidence to use the equipment.

“I began working for Treefellers while still a student and became full time after I completed my diploma. Our work varies from managing vegetation on railway lines to removing mature trees from homeowners’ gardens, so every day is different.”

Alex’s story

Alex Milroy Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land and Wildlife Management (Game) 2021

Job title: Beat keeper, Derbyshire Peak District Ambition: Head keeper

“I’m a beat keeper on a grouse shoot and help to manage the moorland habitat for the game birds and for the resident wildlife. I did my work placement here and was invited to apply when the post became vacant. This is my second permanent position and both involve upland management, which I studied at college.

“Cutting back heather and controlling bracken has a huge conservation benefit, as it encourages new heather shoots which grouse and other species of birds depend on to survive and raise their young. We’re also reinstating heather into areas which have been overgrazed and re-wetting parts of the moor by modifying water sources.

“Informed management like this encourages breeding success and we’re supporting stunning birds like lapwing, golden plover and merlin.”

Job title: Trainee Wildlife Ranger, Forestry England, Northamptonshire Ambition: Fully qualified wildlife ranger

It’s a common misconception that game management is all about shooting, but in fact it’s incredibly diverse and includes lots of conservation work.

I’m fascinated by deer and my primary role is to help manage the fallow and muntjac populations in our district, but I’m also involved in conserving a huge range of other species such as red kites, dormice and bats. The way we manage our habitat affects them all.

“After I finished my Tech Bacc I continued to gain work experience at a Norfolk deer park and also spent a winter in Scotland as a pony ghillie. There were a lot of applications for my current role but these experiences plus the skills, knowledge and support I’d gained from college helped me to stand out.”

“The highlights of the course for me have been the weekly trips off campus when we’ve been able to try a range of outdoor sports. The lecturers are really supportive, both during practical sessions and in the classroom.”

“I’ve sailed round the Maldives, the Caribbean, the Seychelles, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Malta and around the Mediterranean. I have a great job but I do have a lot of responsibilities. Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Physical Activity, Fitness and Exercise Science 2021 Job title: Spa therapist

“I became interested in sports massage during my college course and I’ve since expanded my skills and knowledge by studying for additional massage qualifications. I now have an interesting job working at a spa, where I help clients to destress and enhance their general wellbeing in a lovely calm atmosphere. Professional massage can benefit clients both physically and mentally, and it’s very rewarding to see positive results.

“The great thing about the fitness industry is that most qualifications are recognised globally, so it’s possible to work abroad. I’m a keen snowboarder and using my sports massage techniques to help snow sport athletes would be another alternative I’d consider, perhaps in Austria or Canada. There’d be plenty of opportunities to use my personal training qualifications too.”

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Throughout the year, we host several events for the local community to enjoy, including our annual lambing weekends in early March and Family Festival in May, each attracting over 10,000 visitors.

In 2022, we became the new landlords to our local agricultural event, The Nantwich Show, in their 125th year. We have also sponsored the Nantwich Food & Drink Festival and The Royal Cheshire County Show for a number of years.

SUSTAINABILITY AT REASEHEATH

We are passionate about sustainability and focused on our commitment to reduce our own carbon emissions as well as to support businesses across the region to lower theirs through delivering training and carbon auditing. In October 2021 we hosted our first Net Zero Carbon Conference and a second one is planned for February 2023. We are applying a number of sustainable land management practices on our campus to enhance biodiversity and habitats.

Sustainability is deeply embedded within our curriculum through the United Nations ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ and these goals link to lesson intent and implementation. Our curriculum encompasses essential environmental knowledge and green skills to address the emerging demands of land-based industries. It encompasses regenerative agriculture, ecological restoration, sustainable food chain management and sustainable building design.

Our students are trained to use leading edge equipment such as vertical farm and robotic milkers. They learn a range of laboratory and field skills including soil testing, water testing, biodiversity monitoring, GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping and micropropagation.

Staff and students regularly undertake research and practical projects to advance knowledge as well as drive sustainability in the local community. At the time of going to print, our collaboration with local schools as part of our Field-to-Fork project has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Green Gown Awards under the ‘Next Generation Learning and Skills’ category. Our new Institute of Sustainability and Food Innovation is a strategic partnership with the University of Chester which will bring leading expertise from across the sector to create ground-breaking solutions to food security, environmental sustainability, energy and resource management.
