In this edition we catch up with some of our Harvest Technicians who give us some top TECH TIPS for machinery maintenance. During busy times of year it is key to be able to get the backup and support you require. Working alongside our team of 60 technicians our harvest specialists include: Alex Newell (RVT Newport), Dave Leath (RVT Newport), Dan Woollacott (RVT Shrewsbury), Richard Jones (RVT Shrewsbury), Billy Storr (RVT Sudbury) and Mark Paulson (RVT Sudbury). We asked Billy, Dan, Alex and Dave what’s their best advice with harvest ‘TECH TIPS’ and which is their favourite model of combine.

“I have been with Rea Valley Tractors six years this summer. I started off learning the basics by going out on farm with other combine technicians and I have been working on them ever since.” Favourite combine: “My favourite machine would have to be the S Series as the output is so high, they look great and work effortlessly in the field.” “My best advice to keep the machines running is to have them checked over and serviced as soon as possible whilst any potential issues are still in the operators head and can be rectified.

Check all the wearing parts and stay on top of maintenance to prevent in season breakdowns so that the machines work at maximum capacity during harvest.”

Favourite combine: “I like the John Deere S700 combines due to their large capacity and many performance improving features. My favourite feature is the Active Terrain Adjustment™ (ATA) that enhances grain quality and minimizes grain loss when ascending or descending hills, automatically making adjustments on the go to the sieves, chaffer openings and the cleaning fan speed, ensuring a clean grain tank sample thus keeping the combine efficient on hilly terrain.” “Check the condition of all chains, belts and wearing parts regularly and if they need replacing, replace them immediately to prevent any breakdowns during harvest.”

“I’ve been working for RVT for over three and a half years now, this will be my eighth season working with combines. “ Favourite combine: “My favourite model would have to be a S790, once set up they can cover some serious acres. These combines are good to work on because they have plenty of space to get around the machine.” “An important Tech Tip from me would be to keep the machine blown off every day and make sure the radiators are kept clean as this keeps the engine running at its optimum temperature. Also I would recommend keeping chains oiled to keep them running well.”

Favourite combine: “A S785 on tracks would be my favourite combine, they are very nice to work on, the tracks make everything easy for technicians to access and I always enjoy seeing a John Deere S785 working in the field.” “The best pre-harvest advice I can give is to keep the combine dry and well ventilated after being blown down, leaving all the panels off until harvest to deter pests, any doubt over components should be addressed pre-harvest to save on cost and downtime.”

Threshing the tailings separately increases the capacity of the combine delivering better gain quality and lower losses as well as improved straw quality and less fuel consumption.

Better straw and grain quality than hybrid systems, single rotor technology offers true multi-crop capability. Depending on the conditions there’s a choice of two rotors: TriStream and VariableStream. The TriStream rotor for lower yielding crops. The Vari-Stream rotor for high yields or when crops are damp, wet and green or in tough straw. For these conditions the rotor has been designed with a more conical shape at the front and the amount of rotations the crop performs can also be changed from inside the cab which allows the operator to easily vary the threshing intensity depending on whether conditions and improve the straw quality.

HARVESTLAB 3000 ONE SENSOR, THREE APPLICATIONS With the HarvestLab 3000 sensor, you’ll access real-time forage and manure analysis on the go. Benefit from automatic length-of-cut and inoculant dosing adjustments based on dry matter content while you are harvesting. And when you apply slurry, you can do it with the same precision you know from mineral fertilizer application.

The HarvestLab™ 3000 allows you to measure dry matter content and record essential ingredients such as crude protein, starch, crude fibre, and sugar while harvesting. You can also automatically adjust the length of cut according to DM content measurements and dose silage additives with precision – all on the go. With HarvestLab™ 3000, you can understand and control the quality of harvested crops before you feed them to your animals.

More accurate yield and ingredient documentation HarvestLab™ 3000 sensor provides on-the-go yield, moisture and constituents data when used in conjunction with the Harvest Monitor™ system. This instantaneous information can then be recorded and documented by using the Harvest Doc™ mapping system and a StarFire™ 6000 Receiver. Harvest conditions are never perfect, effective management and the ability to react quickly and efficiently becomes paramount. The HarvestLab 3000 sensor allows producers to make informed management decisions at harvest and during storage in order to maximize silage and feed quality from the day it is harvested to the day it is fed or sold. Much value stems from obtaining instantaneous yield, moisture, and constituent data. Producers can quickly identify if the crop has reached

the optimal moisture to harvest, prevent downtime while waiting for the moisture measurements,automatically adjust the length-of-cut and inoculant levels to the optimal level, optimize the bunk density and fermentation for heightened silage and feed quality, segment the storage facilities based on the moisture or constituent content, compare hybrid/variety productivity, acquire dry volumes and produce enhanced invoicing and documentation. Data can be sent wirelessly to the John Deere Operations Centre. Data is available to view in Field Analyser after a field has been completed and new work has started, or approximately one half hour after field work has been stopped. Producers can analyse data making it easier for them to make operational decisions.

What is RVT Shield?

What about manufacturers extended warranties?

RVT Shield is our brand name that covers all the warranty and maintenance options RVT can now offer, for both new and used John Deere’s and JCBs. We also offer seasonal warranties on combines, forage harvesters (all depots) and Grimme equipment (Sudbury depot only).

These come under the RVT Shield brand so form part of the Shield portfolio.

How do I find more about RVT Shield? Speak to Nigel Summerfield, who can give you more information or provide you with a quote.

Can I put a warranty on my 3 year old telehandler or tractor? We can put warranties on any tractor or telehandler up to 5 years old or 5000 hours, for a maximum of 2 years/2000 hours.

Can I put a maintenance plan on my 3 year old telehandler or tractor?

Direction of wind, type of crop, and crop moisture content can all impact where and how much crop material and debris can accumulate. CAB MAINTENANCE Cab Air Filters For maximum performance of an Air Conditioning system proper maintenance of cab air filters is required. When recirculation air filters are plugged, or have never been serviced, the tractor’s AC system is forced to attempted to cool 100% of the outside air. This is much more difficult than cooling a mixture of recirculated air and outside air. Performance is dramatically reduced with dirty cab air filters.

Proper maintenance of fresh air filters is recommended. When the fresh air filters are plugged, or have never been serviced the tractor’s AC is forced to run in recirculation air mode.

Condenser: Make sure the condenser fins are clean and straight. For adequate cooling and compressor reliability proper airflow and 100% efficiency are required. Failure to keep the condenser in good condition could result in inadequate cooling and compressor failure. DO NOT use high-pressure washers when cleaning the condenser. We recommend to use low-pressure water and compressed air. A high pressure washer could puncture the condenser or bend the condenser fins. If the machine is equipped with a side-screen it may be necessary to clean it more than once a day when operating in high debris conditions.

We asked Carl a few questions to gain an insight to his role within the RVT Precision Team and to see what projects he has been working on recently.

What area of Precision do you specialise in? All areas of precision farming from steering systems to bespoke application technology. My role mostly involves understanding what the customer is looking to achieve and working out an innovative solution to achieve the customers goals using precision farming technology and products.

What projects have you been working on lately? Recent projects include Christmas tree planting, converting onion planter to electric drive, updating sprayer technology on old sprayers and implement steering.

Christmas Tree Planting We have now completed two of these systems which are proving to be successful in the field. We have utilised the New John Deere application controller 1100 and adapted it to the control system on the Christmas tree planter and made it simple for the customer by using an ISOBUS harness for easy connection between machine and the tractor. Customers are looking for this type of solution as this will improve overall efficiency, but will aid in mowing and crop care applications throughout the 10 year crop cycle of tree growth. There are plans to use robotic mowers in coming years which played a big factor in planting the trees in grid patterns so that they can integrate the coming technology sooner and more effectively.

Onion Planter/Drill We have now supplied one of the first Ag Leader suredrive systems in the UK. The system is normally used on corn planters in the USA but we have supplied a 14 row kit to a grower who was initially looking for a solution to give them sectional shut off on their onion drill. After some discussions we decided that the suredrive was going to be the solution to use. Other

than sectional shut off, it would provide row by row rate control based on GPS forward speed. This meant that the mechanical elements such as chains and sprockets could be removed as the suredrive unit directly drives each metering unit, and the whole system is powered by the Ag Leader Incommand 1200 and connected to the existing John Deere RTK for precise planting.

Sprayers Sprayer technology is one of the main upgrades we perform year on year. Older sprayers benefiting from a technology upgrade to improve application, provide sectional shut off and documenting of products applied. A lot of customers want to use existing GPS equipment or the same brand of GPS across all the machines on the farm. We are able to provide an ISOBUS rate controller that can work with most ISOBUS displays and that can work with both pressure and flow based sprayers, giving us the flexibility to suit almost all types of machines.

Active Machine and Implement Guidance This is an area we see getting more popular year on year. Customers are looking for absolute accuracy, especially when it comes to root crops. We have several options of doing this and recent installations have included independent front and rear steering on JCB Fastracs, to side-shifting headstocks for ridging and destoner steering; ultimately keeping the working machine exactly in the correct place throughout the whole operation. For the implements we use the John Deere application controller which allows us to use it for side shifting or to steer axles on the machine.

What part of your job role do you enjoy the most? Every day is never the same. I enjoy being presented with different challenges every day, discussing how to create a bespoke system to find a solution for customers and then implementing the new system on site, in the field.

OPTIMISING THE IRRIGATION SCHEDULE IS VITAL Alastair Heath of James Heath and Sons Ltd near Telford and his brother James grow 150ha of potatoes spread over a number of fields eight miles from the home farm. Around 85% of the crop is irrigated, using 20ha of trickle and three rain guns. Since installing four 60cm soil probes and two iMETOS ECO D3mClima 80 stations supplied by RVT, they are better able to match water supply to crop need. Schedules are checked and updated weekly, based on water deficit reports from their Agrii agronomist and the data from the Metos stations and probes.

Alastair says, “Before we installed the stations we treated every field the same. Now, we know that we can have a 20mm difference in rainfall in fields only 2.5 miles apart, and that our fields vary in how each crop responds to water uptake. With the live data from the probes we can see how much water is available in that field’s soil, and how fast the crop is using it. This helps us plan when to irrigate, how much water to put on and how long it will last. “We’re finding that we vary the amount we apply a lot more than before. Depending on how soon we can get to the various fields, we know that some need irrigating every seven days to get them back to field capacity, while others can be left for longer or need water more frequently. Previously we used to try to get into a rota of going round a

recordings from the stations and at how the moisture levels are going up and down with rainfall, you can gauge the conditions in that field and work out the trends. “We’re now looking at the data from individual fields and using this alongside Hutton Period alerts from Blightwatch. This helps us make better informed decisions about the blight pressure on a field-byfield basis. But having this information on weather, rainfall and soil moisture from the stations helps us plan our activities better and make decisions according to actual conditions in the field.”

JOHN DEERE TO OPEN NEW APPRENTICE TRAINING CENTRE John Deere and training provider ProVQ have announced plans to open a brand new Apprentice Training Centre this autumn, at a farm site in Nottinghamshire. Designed specifically and solely for John Deere dealer apprentices attending the company’s award winning training programmes, the first Centre was established at Radcliffe-on-Trent five years ago. These premises have now been outgrown, due to the programmes’ success and increasing dealer demand. “We are really looking forward to establishing this new bespoke facility close to our UK headquarters at Langar,” said John Deere Limited training centre manager Allan Cochran. “Our joint investment in the expanded Apprentice Training Centre will be in the region of £1.5 million. This will allow us to continue our growth and ambition to attract more young talent to develop successful careers in land-based engineering through the John Deere agricultural, turf and forestry dealer network.
