THE KNOW
Talking Harvest with Nick Wells
If you’ve ever found yourself needing guidance during the harvest season, we hope you are lucky enough to have someone like Nick Wells on your side.
As Harvest Product Specialist at Rea Valley Tractors, Nick has been the go-to person for farmers looking for expert advice and support for over a decade. With his wealth of experience and friendly demeanour, it’s no wonder that he has become an indispensable resource, trusted by farmers year after year.
Passion for farming
Nick’s journey with Rea Valley Tractors started back in 2009 when he joined the company as a demonstrator at our Sudbury branch. Early on, it was clear that Nick had a deep passion for agriculture and a natural ability to connect with customers. He went on to take a Precision Farming role in 2011, leveraging his technical expertise to help farmers optimise their operations and maximise their yields.
However, it was in 2016 that Nick found his true calling when he transitioned into a sales role. The shift has allowed him to build longlasting relationships with customers, utilising his understanding of their needs and providing tailored solutions to their evolving demands. Nick’s genuine dedication to his customers shines through, earning him a reputation as a trusted friend and advisor.
But Nick’s journey in the agricultural industry started long before his time at Rea Valley Tractors. His passion for farming was ignited during his days at Rodbaston College, where he was awarded the prestigious Barclays Award for Dairy Student of the Year. Growing up on a smallholding, Nick had always been hands-on, and after college, he took his
skills to a 6,000-acre arable farm. There, he encountered every aspect of farming, leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of knowledge and expertise
Biggest career achievement
We asked Nick what his biggest achievement in his career was to date and here is what he has to say, “Leading the harvest products operation at Rea Valley Tractors is the pinnacle of my career. I’m passionate about this role and about driving innovation in agriculture. My role allows me to stay on top of the latest industry trends and innovations which I can then bring back to the team and our customers.
Farming publications, internet research, and social media are all great ways to stay informed. Regular conversations with customers and manufacturers offer valuable insights, and along with regular product training and in-field experience, I keep my knowledge current and up-to-date. Personal development within this role is very important as technology continues to evolve and shape farming practices.”
Committed to customer service
Nick’s hands-on experience, coupled with his commitment to customer service, sets him apart from others in the field. Since moving into the Harvest Product Specialist role in 2022, Nick’s primary focus has been to ensure that our customers have the support they need during the critical harvest season.
Nick emphasises “In harvest, time is of the essence and any technical glitch or issue can significantly impact a farmer’s bottom line. Customers are aware that I’m readily available for support; I’m just a phone call away whenever they need assistance.”
Rea Valley Tractors’ customers have come to rely on Nick as their right-hand man during the harvest, and he takes great pride in being able to deliver results and exceed expectations time and time again.
We asked Nick what keeps him so dedicated to the world of agriculture.
Farming has been in my blood from a young age and despite all the challenges the industry has faced over the years, it only makes me more determined to support my customers in whatever way I can.
“I value my customer relationships, providing backup support, and dedicating time to meet face-to-face. I get immense satisfaction from seeing the entire sales process through to the end, optimising the machine to ensure it is running to its full potential, and ensuring that customers are getting the most out of their investment.”
As we gear up for the exciting challenges that harvest 2024 will bring, take comfort in knowing that you have a knowledgeable ally in Nick by your side. He will be there at every turn, offering the expertise and support you need to succeed. With his extensive experience and resolute dedication to customer satisfaction, Nick is an invaluable asset to Rea Valley Tractors and the broader farming community.

A relationship business
A long-standing partnership between DS Roberts and Rea Valley Tractors
On the border of Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire there are three large blocks of arable land, home to DS Roberts & Son. With a heritage spanning generations, this family-run operation has nurtured success across its 1000 acres, specialising in winter wheat and oilseed rape cultivation, alongside onfarm storage. The father and son duo, Denis and David pride themselves on a streamlined approach to farming demonstrating efficiencies and innovation in their agricultural techniques.
DS Roberts & Son’s journey with Rea Valley Tractors began with a need for precision and reliability. “Our first experience, dating back near on
twenty years now, was buying parts over at Sudbury. The team there, led by Mark Burton are great, and they always deliver the parts correctly, right to us,” recalls Denis. “We had a major repair to our John Deere 8370RT back in 2021, which was done efficiently, warranty payment was sourced, and a backup tractor was supplied to keep downtime to a minimum.”
Rea Valley Tractors sets the standard for exceptional customer service with our dedicated Product Specialists, providing expert advice and tailored support to meet the unique needs of each customer.

Guidance & support
With an in-depth understanding of the equipment we sell, our Product Specialists offer invaluable insights and guidance to customers by accurately assessing requirements, recommending suitable products, and providing ongoing assistance to ensure that they receive the highest level of service and satisfaction.
And it’s the enduring relationship Denis and David have with our Harvest Product Specialist Nick Wells that truly defines their collaborative success, and despite the franchise switch from John Deere to New Holland in late 2022, DS Roberts & Son have remained steadfast in their loyalty. “Nick’s vast technical knowledge has been indispensable when setting up new equipment and maximising performance in the field,” explains David. “Nick has a wealth of knowledge and gives excellent advice on new kit, and what will be the best fit for our system. RVT provides a quality service which we can trust,” affirms David.
Embracing new technologies
As the agricultural landscape evolves with technological advancements, DS Roberts & Son embrace the potential for increased profitability and efficiency. “We are excited by the capabilities of new technology, and we have the support to correct any technical issues when they arise,” acknowledges Denis.
Amidst the array of machinery dotting their farm, one piece of kit stands out as a firm favourite – the New JCB 542/70 Agri Xtra. “It’s super-fast at loading lorries, tows trailers very well, it’s quick on the road, and the extra controls at the fingertips make it easy to use.”
Reflecting on their journey, father and son fondly remember their first purchase from Rea Valley Tractors – a JD8370R tractor with a Cousins low disturbance cultivator. “This has made our OSR establishment much more efficient, and the tractor has been very versatile,” reminisces Denis.
First-class support
Yet, beyond the machines, it’s the strength of relationships that underpins their success. “The first-class support from Rea Valley Tractors is essential for us - we could not operate without it, especially now when we have minimal labour.”
In the ever-changing landscape of agriculture, partnerships forged in trust, reliability, and expertise stand as pillars of strength. For DS Roberts & Son, Nick Wells and the team at Rea Valley Tractors have not only been suppliers, but trusted allies in their journey towards continued success on the farm.

Solo square baler improves bale quality
Derbyshire Farmer Kevan Atkin tells us how his new Kuhn SB 1290 iD has not only improved bale output but saved time on winter bedding work.
Doubling baling output by trading in a four-string baler for a six-stringer has seen harvest productivity increase and reduced the bale handling time in the field and when bedding during the winter.
After nine years of running a four-string Lely baler, Kevan Atkin wanted to streamline his harvest baling process by adopting a larger machine to reduce labour requirements and increase daily output to clear several days of combining in one hit.
He had entertained using a contractor to bale straw and hay across his 600ha farm, but the lack of control to bale when it suited him wasn’t ideal. So, after searching the market, he eventually settled on a Kuhn SB 1290 iD to replace the older machine and admits he has been surprised by the gains made during its first full season.
“I would say we are twice as fast with the Kuhn SB baler than our previous machine as we are making bigger, better-quality bales. The increase isn’t just baling output in the field, as there are less bales to load and cart and bigger bales to use when bedding in the winter, the time saving adds up across the whole farm,” says Mr Atkin.
The mixed farm in Barrow upon Trent, Derbyshire, has a 200-strong beef suckler herd complimented by 450ha of arable land. Mr Atkin aims to be self-sufficient and 95% of the feed used for the cows is home-grown, with the farm relying heavily on straw.
“Our beef suckler herd is bedded on straw throughout the year, so we bale everything behind the combine. We run a six-straw walker machine,
which leaves large fluffy swaths of straw, that has posed issues with previous balers. Part of the appeal with the Kuhn machinery is that it is well built, and it has features to save time on the farm during our busiest period.”
Double plunger benefits
The baler arrived in spring 2023 and was put straight to work baling hay. Although he hadn’t run a Kuhn baler before, he was convinced to buy one after seeing the Twinpact plunger design working at a demo and the multiple benefits it offered. Mr Atkin’s local dealer, Rea Valley Tractors, spent time making sure he knew the machine inside and out.
“I did a lot of research into the Kuhn balers and especially the double plunger Twinpact system. After trialling a few other machines, I saw the SB working and was impressed with the smooth operation and output. It also had a low power requirement for a big square baler and offered high density and a well-formed bale. We run it on our Deutz 6215 and it handles it with no issues.”
Improved bale quality in both hay and straw is one of the main benefits of the double plunger. The baler can easily achieve bale weights of 600kg in linseed, 450kg in straw, 560kg in hay crops, with Mr Atkin saying the weights are good, but a bigger positive is the consistency of each bale is identical, which makes loading and bedding-up much easier.
reavalleytractors.com 13 KUHN BALER IMPROVES PRODUCTIVITY | MACHINERY
The Twinpact upper and lower plungers compact the bale on alternate strokes to increase the applied force per surface area. The split design also means the 485kg flywheel and driveline are the same as a standard 120x90 baler.
Smooth operator
Forward speed has a big part to play in the operation and, like any baler, it must be kept full to work at its optimum. The integral rotor and feeder forks fill the pre chamber to produce each flake before a measuring plate then releases it into the main chamber for the double plunger to form the bale. The Twinpact system aims to avoid peak loads on the baler and achieves a 25% higher bale density than a single plunger design.
Mr Atkin says the smooth operation is a big benefit. “The double plunger means there isn’t the relentless thud and subsequent rocking motion associated with a single plunger action on large square balers. We are getting denser, better-quality bales from a baler that is more enjoyable to operate.”
The consistent bale formation has offered advantages when feeding and using material in the ration. Bales are opened on the floor and used in the ration when required, with individual flakes removed without the whole bale falling apart: “I have never seen a baler produce a bale with consistently sized flakes and a constant density as this one. Removing individual flakes like this demonstrates the quality of the formation.”
Harvest time-saving
Producing fewer denser bales as opposed to more lighter bales means less running around on stubbles during collection, which helps to lower compaction and speeds up the loading process.
A wider 2.2m pickup on the SB 1290 iD than on Mr Atkin’s old four stringer model can cope with wider fluffy swaths directly from the combine, so there isn’t as much weaving and watching the rows. The intake rotor also comes in for high praise and helps achieve the higher output, which means he is confident to combine for three days, leaving straw on the ground, with the baler capable of clearing the rows in just one day.
“Our stubbles have never been so clean, the SB 1290 iD pickup is fantastic and does a great job of collecting the straw from the deck and leaving it clear. This makes our min-till cultivations easier as we aren’t dragging patches of unbaled straw around. It also has wider 620/50 R22.5 flotation tyres to help spread the weight in the field.”
One extra Mr Atkin added was a moisture meter to keep tabs on material throughout the day. He says, although it isn’t essential, it has become a handy addition for the operator to monitor moistures, especially when baling late into the evening.
Reduced winter bedding work
Streamlining winter bedding and feeding works and keeping costs in check is also something Mr Atkin is constantly looking to do. Using homegrown feeds such a crimped barley, peas, beans, wheat and whole crop, he is controlling a large percentage of the feed supplied to his herd.
“I try to grow all the proteins for the ration and reduce the exposure to external feed cost fluctuations. When bedding up, we are saving ¾ hour per day as the bales are bigger and more time is spent spreading the bale, rather than shunting back to the stack for another. The savings are also noticed at weekends when it is usually only one person bedding up.”
Mr Atkin creates square stacks, six bales high, with the fifth row turned 90 degrees to brace the four bottom rows. This offers improved structure by preventing the end columns of bales becoming detached and potentially falling away. It also makes the stack safer for operators when removing high bales. “We recently had a health and safety audit, and the assessor commended us on how we store the bales. It is much easier with bales that are square to build strong, safer stacks.”
Although the baler represented a large investment for the farm, the wider benefits across different aspects of the business has meant he is pleased with the decision. “We have reduced labour demands at harvest time and when bedding up the cows through achieving better quality bales and increasing our output,” concludes Mr Atkin.

A GUIDE TO BUYING A USED TELEHANDLER – EXPERT TIPS & WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Purchasing second-hand tractors and machinery can offer you significant cost savings, but navigating the process can often be riddled with challenges and requires careful consideration, and attention to detail. This rings especially true for JCB telehandlers, also known as loadalls, considering their frequent use and potential for wear and tear in demanding farm environments.
We asked Malcolm Davies – Rea Valley Tractors Used Equipment Manager, for some hints and tips on buying used JCB telehandlers.
A key area to consider when researching a good quality use telehandler is the service history, or more to the point, signs that show a lack of regular maintenance. Look for a JCB loadall with a comprehensive service history and ideally one previous owner who’s kept it tidy and regularly maintained. A JCB Loadall will always hold its value in comparison to other brands.
When it comes to making purchasing decisions, Malcolm shares “Whilst the initial investment may be slightly higher when purchasing a JCB loadall, quite often it will have lower lifetime costs due to their reliability and higher residual value long term. Additionally, parts are readily available and affordable, further contributing to cost-effectiveness.”
APPEARANCE
Inspect the external appearance for indicators of past treatment. It will provide valuable insights into its history and maintenance, so look for signs of wear and tear, including bumps, scrapes, and dents, as these can indicate how the machine has been treated over time and may hint at potential underlying issues. Evaluating the external appearance thoroughly can help you make informed decisions and avoid unexpected surprises down the line.
Pay attention to areas that are prone to corrosion, such as the bottom panel of the engine pod or the cab door. Exposure to dirt and regular scrapes means the bottom panel can often be cracked or marred, so carefully examine the telehandler for any signs of corrosion to help assess its overall condition and any potential maintenance needs.
And don’t forget to check the VIN plate, normally located towards the back of the machine, or more recently in the cab. This must be fully visible, not just for safety compliance in passing the LOLER Thorough Examination, but to verify it matches the chassis/axle/engine numbers.

MALCOLM’S TOP TEN TIPS
HOURS
It’s important to note the hours on used equipment –making sure they match with the advertisement, as they give valuable insight into the usage and overall condition. High operating hours may indicate extensive use, increasing wear and tear on essential components.
On the flip side, a JCB telehandler with fewer operating hours might suggest minimal wear and tear, potentially indicating a longer lifespan ahead.
ENGINE
The JCB engine stands as a testament to reliability, renowned worldwide for its performance in challenging environments. Its long-stroke low RPM operation increases longevity, making it an ideal choice for off-highway applications like material handling. Unlike engines from some competitors, which are off-the-shelf models repurposed for handlers, the JCB engine is purpose-built and chassis-mounted for agricultural needs.
While inherently reliable, neglect and poor maintenance can affect performance over time. When inspecting a used JCB loadall, it’s crucial to check oil and coolant levels and their condition. While the engine is running, be vigilant for any unusual sounds, smoke, vibrations, signs of leaks, or excessive breathing. An incredibly resilient piece of kit!
Additionally, pay close attention to the cooling system, which plays a vital role in demanding operations and heavyduty cycles. Inspect the condition of radiators and ask or see if the auto tensioner and belt that drives the alternator and water pump has been recently changed. These proactive measures ensure optimal engine performance and longevity. 2 3 4 5 6
TRANSMISSION
Like the engine, the transmissions will generally last the life of the machine if maintained properly. Look for the service history – check that the hydraulic filters have been changed every 500 hours and the oil changed every 1,000 hours, plus the suction filter should be cleaned during each service.
AXLES & STEERING
For thorough inspection, elevate both the front and rear ends of the telehandler, and examine the axle kingpins for any indication of movement, along with checking the pivot point at the center of the rear axle. Don’t overlook the steering bushes, as these tend to be neglected during greasing and can deteriorate rapidly.
BRAKES
A common error among telehandler owners is using the wrong oil in the brake cylinder, which can cause damage to seals and the brake pack itself.
Fill it with ISO 15 hydraulic oil and avoid using corrosive dot 4 brake fluid at all costs. We recommend performing a few emergency stops to ensure the braking system’s functionality, and test the handbrake on a slope.
17 reavalleytractors.com USED JCB TELEHANDLERS | MACHINERY
BOOM & HYDRAULICS
Inspect the boom section for hidden damage that could potentially lead to significant expense for second-hand buyers. Raise the main boom and rock the extending sections to check for lateral movement, and examine the wear pads for signs of wear.
Be vigilant for any damage or tampering with the load sensor switch, which activates when the boom extends and may indicate overload concerns. Additionally, conduct routine checks to verify the proper functionality of all lift functions such as up, down, extend, crowd, and tilt, ensuring there are no apparent hydraulic leaks or worn pipes that require replacement. Elevate the carriage and tilt it to approximately 45 degrees to inspect for signs of cracking or wear in pins and bushes, and generally have a good look around all pins and bushes on the machine for excess wear and any movement. If there are signs of grease it’s a good indicator that its been well cared for! 7
8
CAB
Examine the joystick to make sure it performs as it should. Ensure all mirrors are intact and wipers are operational, and inspect the seat base for wear, as frequent entry and exit from the cab can lead to damage, such as exposed foam cushioning.
9
10
HITCH
Check to make sure the hitch hook isn’t excessively worn and adheres to safety standards, usually indicated by a wear line. Ensure the hydraulics and locking mechanism are fully functional.
TYRES
Lastly, examining tyre wear and overall condition, along with mudguards, is essential to give you an overall impression of its usage. Tyre wear may vary based on usage and allows you to negotiate if replacements are needed. Check they are all the same make, evenly worn, inflated correctly and inspect for any cuts or marks.
When venturing into the realm of buying a pre-owned JCB loadall, meticulous attention to detail is paramount. This includes inspecting the external appearance for any indications of wear and tear, as well as inquiring about its service history.
By following these guidelines and seeking expert advice when necessary, you can rest assured you’re making a wellinformed decision and potentially avoid costly repairs or unexpected issues down the road.
For anyone looking to purchase a secondhand JCB telehandler, and want the reassurance of a main dealer, we have a large stock of quality used equipment available for sale. Scan here to see our latest stock listing.

Celebrating 40 Years Strong
This month, we proudly commemorate four decades of dedicated service to the agricultural community. As we reflect on our journey, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our employees, customers, and partners who have been integral to our success.
Established in 1984 by Ian Vance, Gordon Potter, and Chris Willner, in a unit off Main Road in Pontesbury, Shropshire, we have been a driving force in the agricultural industry, witnessing and leading significant advancements in machinery and technology over the past forty years.
Early years
From modest beginnings, we have emerged as a trusted name in the agricultural sector, serving farmers and landowners across the breadth of the region. What started as a small operation has grown into a dynamic enterprise, adapting to the evolving needs of modern agriculture while remaining true to our core values of quality, reliability, and good oldfashioned customer service.
Under the stewardship of Simon Clarke, who acquired the company in 2010, he consolidated its position by merging with Derbyshire dealership Agricultural Industrial Services Ltd (AIS) and adopting a unified brand for smoother management. The recent acquisition of neighbouring New Holland dealer Teme Valley Tractors has further expanded our reach, adding two new locations and over 25 experienced personnel to our team.
Throughout the years, the agricultural landscape has undergone remarkable transformations, with technological advancements revolutionising farming practices. We have been at the forefront of embracing these changes, consistently introducing innovative machinery and equipment to improve efficiency, productivity, and sustainability on the farm.
Staying ahead
From traditional tractors to cutting-edge precision farming solutions, our team has remained ahead of the curve, delivering tailored solutions to meet the evolving demands of the industry. Remaining committed to staying abreast of the latest advancements in agricultural tech has been crucial to our success, enabling farmers and contractors to optimise yields while minimising environmental impact.
“Our journey over the past 40 years has been one of constant evolution and growth,” said Simon Clarke, Chairman at Rea Valley Tractors. “We take immense pride in the role we’ve played in supporting the local agricultural community and driving innovation in farming practices. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain dedicated to providing our customers with the tools and expertise they need to thrive in an ever-changing agricultural landscape.”
To mark our 40th anniversary, we will host a series of promotions throughout the year - follow our social media channels for updates. Customers can anticipate exclusive deals, giveaways, and celebrations as we reflect on our achievements and look ahead to the future.

Heartfelt thank you
Matthew Mulligan, Managing Director of Rea Valley Tractors, expressed gratitude, stating,“We owe thanks to our incredible staff, loyal customers, and valued partners. Their support, dedication, and trust have been instrumental in our journey, and without them, our achievements would not have been possible.
“We deeply value the trust and loyalty of our customers, whose feedback and support have been invaluable in guiding us toward improvements, and we eagerly look forward to continuing to serve them in the future,” Mulligan added.
Continuing a legacy
As we look to the future, we remain focused on delivering exceptional products and services while upholding our commitment to sustainability and land stewardship. With a team of knowledgeable professionals and a comprehensive range of agricultural solutions, we are poised to continue our legacy of excellence for many years to come.
Earlier this month, staff from across our branches were honoured for their length of service. Those receiving the awards have amassed an amazing 546 years between them. Long service awards were presented to 31 employees, with service ranging from 10 years to 35 years. Gary Waters, who started with us in 1989 on a service technician apprenticeship walked away with a 30-year service award, and Anna Brown was given a 10-year service award following an 11-year tenure.
In recognition of their unwavering dedication and commitment, they bring invaluable knowledge, skills, and experience, enriching our culture and strengthening our team’s collective expertise. Join us in raising a toast to their remarkable journey and the many more milestones yet to come.

WOMEN SHAPING THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE
Emma Spruce, Parts Advisor
In an industry historically dominated by males, we are starting to see an increase in the number of women stepping into various roles in the agricultural realm. This new wave of women visible in the industry; no longer confined to traditional stereotypes, is reshaping the image of farming and bringing a diverse array of perspectives and talents to the field.
Our Middlewich branch is staffed with an exceptional team, including four remarkable women whom we interviewed to hear their insights on working in the agricultural industry, and as part of the wider Rea Valley Tractors team.
Sharing her love for the agricultural community and the satisfaction of working closely with customers, Emma draws inspiration from her family’s farming heritage, encouraging others to explore opportunities within agriculture and play a part in rewriting its narrative for the better.
We asked Emma what a typical ‘day in the life’ looks like for her. “As Parts Advisors, day-to-day we are managing stock inventory for customers, service technicians, and our warehouse needs. We are the initial customer contact point, taking phone calls, serving walk-ins, and fulfilling service picks on New Holland and JCB equipment. Generally, this will involve sourcing the correct parts, allocating to the job, and picking them from the warehouse for the technicians to use. It’s a varied role, requiring great customer service skills and the ability to adapt to challenges and evolving needs.”
Anna Welland, Apprentice Service Technician
Anna explains that as a Service Technician, you enjoy a lot of variety in the work you do. From the varying agricultural equipment you work on, to the different farms and faces you see, her diverse role covers diagnosing and repairing faults, to performing PDIs and scheduled servicing on tractors.
We asked Anna how important it is to her that she empowers other women to take up roles like her own: “Without women, you’re missing out on 50% of the workforce out there. With many dealerships shortstaffed, it’s vital women be encouraged to assume these traditionally male-dominated roles. Working on the spanners as a young woman you’re usually very underestimated, but once you’re on farm, speaking to farmers and working on their machines they soon realise you have just as much skill and knowledge as any other lad on the spanners. I frequently see farmers encouraging their daughters to come and speak to me when I’m attending a job, and it’s great that I can demonstrate what I can do. I hope it empowers more young girls to pursue roles within agriculture, particularly as technicians.”
Nicola reflects on her journey as Territory Sales Manager and emphasises the importance of breaking stereotypes and empowering women to pursue their passions. She envisions a future where women in sales roles at dealerships become more commonplace, driven by their capabilities, professionalism, and dedication.
“I feel its important to pursue our passions without concerning ourselves too much with other people’s opinions. If I allowed the occasional comment about me, as a woman, in this role to deter me, I wouldn’t be in the role I am today. It’s important to demonstrate that we are just as capable and valuable to the team, regardless of gender stereotypes suggesting otherwise, and we’re just as comfortable getting our hands dirty as the next man! The team at Middlewich is very supportive; everyone is genuinely helpful and committed to the company’s success which makes it a great environment to work in. I love getting out and about meeting new customers and seeing the various types of farms, and differences in agricultural practices.”
In an ever-evolving role, Bernadette highlights how adaptability and commitment to excellence are key to staying ahead of the game. From assisting with day-to-day administration to spearheading health and safety initiatives, Bernadette’s organisational skills and dedication shine through, proving that women are integral to every aspect of the agricultural sector.
Bernadette shares some insights on her career journey, highlighting the essential contributions women make in shaping and refining the day-to-day operations and dynamics. “Every day is different, presenting new challenges and allowing me opportunities to learn as I go. I especially enjoy organising various aspects of depot operations, whether it’s managing paperwork, communicating with the team to keep everyone informed, or keeping our customer records up to date. Credit must be given to the incredible team I work with; their camaraderie makes it an enjoyable environment. While I once navigated the corporate world in business attire and heels, I now proudly don my uniform, gilet, and flat-heeled boots—and I couldn’t be happier. Being part of a company that encourages and supports women in all roles within this historically male-dominated industry is truly fulfilling.”

Skills for life
Earlier in the year, we celebrated National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting some of our apprentices and how they have gained valued skills for life through work-based learning programs.
Apprenticeships are an ideal way to kickstart a career and provide valuable ‘on the job’ industry experience that you don’t get with traditional educational routes. We talked to some of our team to hear what they had to say about their apprenticeship experience.
“Being an apprentice is a great way to learn on the job. Growing up around Agriculture I knew I wanted to progress a career in this industry, but I also wanted to gain wider business skills. A Business Administration Apprenticeship at Rea Valley Tractors ticked both boxes, and it opens opportunities to progress and work in various fields in the sector.”
Jamie Taylor, now a qualified service technician at Shrewsbury following completion of his Level 3 Land Based Service Engineering Apprenticeship, reflects.
“My apprenticeship has given me a head start in the industry and has set me up for a successful career. It has not just equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge, but also given me the confidence to take on challenges. I’m excited about the opportunities available to me.”
Land-based apprenticeships are a great way to gain valuable skills whilst earning a wage and it opens up further opportunities to learn and progress. Get in touch to find out how you can gain #SkillsForLife with Rea Valley Tractors.

Brit-click’ gains momentum
Waitrose, the Co-op, Ocado and Sainsbury’s have all changed their websites as a result of the ‘Brit click’ campaign, which calls on retailers to back the nation’s farmers by adding ‘buy British’ filters online. Waitrose said the option to view only home-grown or reared produce across 270 items showed it was backing British farmers and the “high environmental and animal welfare standards they deliver”.
Meanwhile, Co-op Propositions Director Adele Balmforth said the function would be added to its same-day shopping platform. “The new best of British pages mean we support local livelihoods and give our customers what they want,” she added. Announcing its own ‘best
of British’ section in March, Ocado said 87% of its customers considered it important to support home-grown food, with searches for ‘British produce’ on its website up 77% year-onyear. “We’re proud to have gathered over 800 quality products that are British all year round in an easy-to-shop ‘aisle’ on the site,” said the retailer’s Amit Chitnis.
Sainsbury’s had earlier unveiled a ‘best of British’ section, with 450 products and recipe tips. “Many of our customers want to support British suppliers and to make more conscious choices when doing their food shop,” said CEO Simon Roberts.
Long-haul
The ‘brit-click’ has been backed by the NFU since 2016. The latest wave of campaigning saw 31,000 shoppers sign an open letter and 500 people email their MPs. In the past year, the
push has been led by Bosworth MP Dr Luke Evans, who gathered the backing of 121 MPs to write to supermarket chiefs in the summer.
Rishi Sunak has also lent his support, calling for industry action “to showcase the incredible food produced right here”. Morrisons was first to respond, and changed its website in December, with Aldi following in January.
NFU Deputy President David Exwood praised Dr Evans. He added: “We know from independent research that the public wants to buy more British food from retailers and that’s why we have been championing this important issue for some time.” Dr Evans said buy British sections were good for food security and food miles. He said he looked forward to seeing more retailers follow suit.

30 03300 568800 30 GROUNDCARE | LAWN MOWERS
HOW TO Service Your Lawn Mower
With summer approaching, you’ll soon be relying on your lawn mower frequently in the months ahead. If you haven’t already done so, it’s essential to service your mower to ensure it’s in top condition for the season.
Whilst this job is probably best done by a professional, you could attempt to do it at home with some mechanical knowhow and the right tools. But to make you aware, it’s important to check that any guarantees and warranties will still be valid if you decide to service the mower yourself.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
Blade Maintenance: The blades are the heart of your mower, whether it’s petrol, electric, or robotic. Blunt blades can damage turf and lead to uneven cutting. Check if the blades need sharpening or replacement. If they’re bent or chipped, it’s time for new ones.
Deck Cleaning: Clear out any clippings and dirt from around the mower deck. Remove the covers to clean other components thoroughly. Electric mowers require special attention to ensure the vents remain clear for proper airflow. Avoid getting water on electrical parts.
Keep It Lubricated: Lubricate all moving parts on the electric and petrol mowers. For electric mowers, lubricate the wheels to keep them running smoothly. If you have a petrol-powered mower, don’t forget to service the engine.
Remember to unplug your mower or remove the battery before starting any maintenance work. While this guide covers the basics, consulting a professional and your mower’s manual for detailed instructions is always a good idea. By servicing your mower now, you’ll be ready to tackle your lawn with ease when the mowing season starts!
It’s worth mentioning that electric mowers offer the same power but are cheaper to run in the long term - a win-win for both your lawn and your wallet.
