Pine Lake Country Club Since 1952 | Country Life . . . Club Setting

From the General Manager by Travis Dale

Spring is definitely in the air. There are many exciting things going on at the

club this month for you and your family. If you have not made your Easter reservations yet please call us quickly as reservation times are filling up fast! I mention the term opportunity often, as with change comes opportunity. Last Friday we had a great annual meeting where over 110 members attended. Several topics were discussed and many questions were asked and answered, with additional information to come. The power point presentation is available on the member side of our website. Once you log in you will see a small graphic with people on it and the words “Annual Meeting”. If you click on the image, it will direct you to the presentation, where you must only fill out the basic information and all questions and feedback will be sent to the club. All responses will be reviewed by the club management and board of directors. I want to bring to your attention another opportunity. We are looking to grow the membership at the club and I am asking for your assistance. Bring your friends, family members and colleagues to the club. We are beginning to have several events to encourage bringing a friend, beginning with the Paint and Sip Ladies Night! If you have friends that are interested in membership please send me their information and I will be happy to set up a time to speak with them. If you are able to get a friend to join the club you will receive a credit on your member account after they have been a member for six months. This credit will be the equivalent of what the member pays per month in dues. We had a great turn out for the children’s swim team registration party, but there is still time to sign up. This information is available on the clubs home page as well. Simply scroll to the bottom and click on the image of the swimmers. Please know we are looking forward to our Summer Camp Sign-Up Social. Saturday April 18 from 10:00 AM-12 Noon. You will be able to meet with Lydia our summer camp coordinator, look at and talk through the camp schedule, and ask questions. This is a new program designed for children ages 4-12, offering a great alternative to traditional “day care” for working parents. My team and I look forward to seeing you at the club!

The greens aerification went very well. We hit a bit of cool weather immediately follow-

ing and then rebounded to near normal temperatures that should have the greens healed up soon. The roots emerging from winter are as good as I’ve seen. This surprised me with all of the cold wet dreary days in January and February. Our nutrient and pH levels were optimum based on our March soil testing, which is most likely the reason for such healthy turf. The bermudagrass got hit with a late frost just as it was breaking dormancy. This set it back, but the warmer temperatures of late will have it covering our fairways and tees soon. The aerification taking place will allow warmer air to reach into the soil sooner and as soil temperatures remain above 55 degrees, growth continues. Optimum divot recovery comes as the low air temperatures are in the 60’s and the angle of the sun begins to increase. I have been hearing some rumblings of cold temperature damage to the new Ultrdwarf bermudagrasses used on putting surfaces. Will it be a total kill or just delayed greening? Time will give us the answer. The USGA reported the coldest temperatures in parts of the transition zone since 1978. This was the year that our club and many others switched from 328 bermudagrass to Pencross bentgrass due to loss of turf. The new Ultradwarfs are much more cold tolerant than the older varieties. There are all sorts of different maintenance strategies used throughout our region and this winter will surely have put these to the test. By May, experts will have a grasp on the extent of damage and can come to some to conclusions as to why, and we as an industry can continue to understand the limits of the low temperature thresholds of the Ultradwarfs and if any maintenance practices can be adjusted to reduce the chance of injury. As you can see, no grass is bullet proof and many factors must be considered to be successful. The best grass is the one that provides the membership with the most satisfaction and is cost prohibitive to maintain with the least amount of average down time over its lifespan. At times, the many challenges that go into providing a quality playing surface can be a bit overwhelming, but this is what makes golf course superintendents want to see that sun rise once again!
