BLACK We noticed a lot of black lips and eyes up and down the catwalk.

16 T R E N D S From New York to London to Milan, two major beauty trends dominated the catwalks this season. Ultra graphic liner, with strong geometric shapes and dashed-off strokes replaced the classic feline flick and sultry and smoky eyes with clear complexions ruled backstage from the likes of Ellie Saab and Fendi. The darkest of lips accompanied the dramatic eyes, amplified as they travelled from city to city, and hues of plum and blackened cherry became this season’s go-to shades.

Black Magic A precise liquid eyeliner and a smudge-resistant kohl are key to recreate the eye looks of A/W 16. You can be as bold or as minimal as you’d like when taking inspiration from the catwalk and feel free to experiment with shapes too! Create thin, geometric lines with the help of the fine tip on the Topshop’s Magic Liner (£6.50) or opt for Soap and Glory’s Supercat Fat Eyeliner (£7) for bolder strokes! We also love Barry M’s Bold Black Waterproof Eyeliner (£3.99) for lining the waterline and for smudging the blackest of black eyeshadows we’ve managed to find is NYX’s single shadow in Stripped (£4).

Cherry Bomb Blackened bordeaux lips were everywhere on the catwalk and if you buy one lipstick for Autumn make sure it’s Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in Black Cherry (£7.99). Apply straight from the bullet for a vampy look or dab lightly onto the lips to slowly build up the colour to an intensity you’re comfortable with. Dior’s make-up artist Peter Philips amplified the shade even further in Paris, transitioning the cherry shades to deep purples. Try OCC’s Black Dahlia Lip Tar (£12.75) to mimic the trend.

Now and again we all have those rare, glorious days where we do something many of us always thought to be impossible… we create matching eyeliner flicks. Most days we’re probably lucky if they look slightly similar, but our chances of creating that perfect winged liner always increase if we use the right tools and products. Liquid, Kohl, Gel… there are so many different types available it can become a little bit exhausting to make a decision when you’re on the hunt for a new liner. Like many things, not all eyeliners are created equal so to give you a helping hand here’s a quick rundown of the pros of each formula and a few of our top liner picks to help you create that perfect cat eye!

Liquid

Liquid Liners come in many forms. For beginners or those of you without a steady hand, liners with a pen-like nib will be the easiest to use… it’s basically just like using a sharpie for the eyelids! If you have a bit more expertise, why not try the brush tip liquid liner? Usually found with an ink pot style of packaging, controlling the elongated brush to draw that perfect straight line can be tricky at first but once you’ve mastered the skill you can do anything. Under eye liner? Multiple Wings? The eyeliner world is your oyster. Best Budget: Collection Fast Stroke Eyeliner (£2.99) Best High End: Benefit Magic Ink Jet-Black Liquid Eyeliner (£15.50) Matte: NYX Matte Liquid Liner (£5)

Gel

Kohl

Best Budget: Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner (£7.99) Best High End: Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner (£17) Tool of Choice: Zoeva 317 Wing Liner Brush (£8)

Best Budget: Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal (£2.99) Best High End: Charlotte Tilbury Rock and Kohl (£19)

Although Gel Liner can be a little bit fiddly, it’s the formula of liner that tends to last on the lids the longest. With the right brush you can create the perfect, precise cat eye in a matter of seconds. The only downside is that it’s a formula that tends to dry out over time so make sure you tighten the lid when you use it!

Perfect for creating a smudged, slept-in liner look or adding a tiny bit of definition for everyday wear in the upper waterline to help lashes look fuller. Kohl liners aren’t commonly known for creating the perfect feline flick but if you’re wanting to master the smoky eye they’re a must have in your makeup bag!

HOW THE HECK DO YOU WEAR BLUE?! When it comes to putting on makeup in the morning, many of us probably find ourselves sticking with the same routine and reaching for what’s comfortable day in and day out. For the majority of us, this most likely features earthy tones and a neutral colour

palette but why are we afraid of injecting some colour into our everyday makeup routines? In the issue, we’re going to be experimenting with shades of blue and looking at the different ways in which we can wear it. It’s also important to remember there are no rules when it

comes to makeup. Be as bold as you want to be, our suggestions are mainly guidelines to help you feel more confident with colour.

Eyes

An easy introduction to adding blue into your makeup routine is to start with the eyes. There are so many different products you can use to do this and you can be as subtle or as intense as your desire. One of the quickest ways to add blue to your look is with an eyeliner and with such a huge range of shades on the market it can be used in many ways. A brighter, lighter blue may seem more adventurous but once applied just above your regular black winged liner it adds a subtle pop of colour. Our favourite two bright blue shades are Turquoise and Periwinkle from Stila’s Smudge Stick range (£14.50). Lighter blues also look amazing smudged under the bottom lash line. Darker tones are the perfect replacement for regular black liner and navy liners, such as Pur Cosmetics’ Double Ego Dual Ended Eyeliner in Bora Bora (£14), can really brighten up your eye area too. You can truly start to experiment with blue through eyeshadow. Deep blue eyeshadows are great to work into a smoky eye, bright cobalt colours with metallic finishes look fantastic alone all over the lid and lightly dusting a light, icy blue shade in the inner corner is perfect for an evening look. Sleek’s Calm Before The Storm I-Divine palette (£7.99) is a wonderful product to start with and it has a wide selection of matte and shimmer blue shades, as well as some neutral shadows to help finish up a look.

Lips

Rhianna, Kesha, Joan Smalls and even the beloved Joey Tribianni have all been spotted with a blue lip and there’s no reason you can’t wear one too. Admittedly, Joey probably didn’t choose the best shade for his skin-tone but we still think he completely rocked it anyway. Blue lipstick can seem daunting at first but if you’re worried about being bold in blue simply keep the rest of your makeup minimal to help you ease into the trend. NYX’s Wicked Lippies in Envy, Scandalous and Risque (£5) are really pigmented and the beautiful jewel-toned lipsticks have an amazing pearlescent finish. And, if you’re more a matte lip lover, make sure you check out LA Girl’s Matte Velvet Lipstick in Blue Valentine too (£5, beautybay.com).

BAD

FEMINIST?

wearing make-up doesn’t stop me fighting for equality I am a feminist and I wear makeup. If you’re wondering what the two even have to do with each other then you’re thinking along the right lines... The fact is they’re not related in the slightest. Yet today, more than ever perhaps, makeup is associated with this sense of falseness. You’re perceived to be shallow, fake and even accused of misleading others around you. And it’s here that the stereotype of a feminist

lies... If you wear makeup and you enjoy this form of vanity, if you ‘cover up’ and use makeup to make yourself ‘pretty’ then many people feel like you cannot be a feminist. The delicate image of the female is perceived as weak and subordinate to men and being ‘girly’ and dressing in a feminine way seems to undermine a woman’s ability of labelling themselves as a feminist. But why?

If you ‘cover up’ and use makeup to make yourself ‘pretty’ then many people feel like you cannot be a feminist. Being a feminist lies beyond the makeup you’re wearing or the clothes you have on. It has nothing to do with appearance whatsoever and the very

22

basis of the term bottles down to one word. Equality. Equality between people, whoever you are and whatever you do. If you enjoy wearing makeup, whether it involves adding a touch of pink gloss or rocking a dark smoky eye, then it really doesn’t effect your ability to be a feminist in any way. If you wear makeup for you, and only you, then there really isn’t a problem. Personally, makeup makes me feel more confident in myself. I feel truly empowered when I wear a red lip.

If you wear makeup for you, and only you, then there really isn’t a problem. As Zooey Deschanel said, “Acting feminine or dressing feminine - what does that have to do with anything? It’s just my taste.” And again on the subject, she states that “...If you feel like

dressing like a girl, there’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t know what feminity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who there are without thinking they need to act like a man, or need to tone it down to be successful. That’s a very good way to keep women down.” You can wear make up and still be a feminist. There really doesn’t need to be a discussion about it. Just remember, makeup should never be a way of hiding or covering up, it should be a tool to express yourself, to empower yourself and to make yourself happy. You are beautiful with or without it.

You can wear make up and still be a feminist.
