Energy Harvester Prototype

1.1 Housing as Energy Harvester

DECENTRALIZED RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION

An urban housing prototype that counteracts the impact of climate change. In the CBD and inner metro suburbs, the site coverage of a building can be up to 56% while permeable area can be as little as 20%. Docklands is an example of extensive apartment developments leaving close to 0% of permeable are. We cannot remove or stop the current form of residential development. Instead, this thesis proposes a second facade that attaches to existing apartments as water and solar energy harvester’s unit, and floor area extensions to one or two-bedroom apartments in the Docklands. To allow more affordable and profitable choices, for families to move or invest into the city apartments Taking Jeremy Rifkin’s work, it is time for the third industrial revolution where energy and resources such as water and electricity can be harvested and shared like the internet network across the urban scape. This can also be an intervention that responses to climate change.

1.3.1 Housing Typology This project seeks to Challenge the housing infill typology Currently, almost every house and unit are designed around families with both parents. Any sense of connectivity happens within the house, while communal areas are neglected. Typical central courtyard of units are for vehicle mobility rather than activities. However, the sense of community and support is particularly import for single parents family. They carry the hardship and subject to feeling different to other families. Hence, communal connectivity and sharing is important. Single parent families can come together share the units.

In Shanghai, the polished appearance of the urban scape and architecture facades attempts to erase traces of history to portray of power. The consequence of rapid urbanization produced problems to communities who lives there. As new rail and highway are developed, infrastructure was established as a counteraction to transportation development. The new transportation bridge includes new highways for cars, motorbikes, trains and pedestrian. As a result, more noise and air pollution are introduced to the surrounding residential areas. What does a sense of place and communal area means to the community?
