What’s Yours?

Showcasing a totally different perspective in grocery shopping I also love shopping at Mariano’s because the people are so nice. The entire store has an amazing atmosphere. I swear I never want to leave that store. It’s so much more than a grocery store, it’s a fun experience. You should head over to their community page, which is full of new content and new ideas on a weekly basis. During my recent trip to Mariano’s, I was once again blown away by the amazing selection and awesome prices. I’m super duper picky when it comes to the beef and seafood that I buy. But that is never a problem at my Harwood Heights Mariano’s. Not only do they carry a huge variety, the meat is excellent quality.

Presenting a totally different perspective in grocery shopping Every time I shop at Mariano’s, it seems to get my creative baking juices flowing. The place is not just a grocery store, it’s an experience! That sounds funny, but you need to see for yourself. I rallied my sister, niece and a friend to take the trip to the Frankfort Mariano’s. It’s like a friendly community more than just a grocery store. One look at their produce section and I was inspired. I swear everything in there is flawless. As soon as I spotted the blueberries, I knew I wanted to include them into my cake recipe. Seriously, how can you pass up these beauties? Since the prices were good, I went ahead and bought two containers. Blueberries will never go to waste here.

I had the pleasure of discovering an exciting shopping market and I’m wondering how I’ve missed knowing about this gem in the city of Chicago–Mariano’s. Much more than a grocery store, Mariano’s surprised me with the atmosphere, customer service, and variety of offerings. Each area of the store feels like its own cozy boutique. It’s a bit like a street in Paris, where you can wander from the butcher to the bakery, passing through the fruit market and ending at the bright and beautiful flower shop. And similar to that street in Paris, you could easily spend hours happily wandering through, or you could run in to grab all the things you need for an amazing meal at home. I did both at my Mariano’s in the heart of downtown!

Expressing a totally different perspective in grocery shopping Grocery shopping is not something my kids usually get very excited about. However, when I asked who wanted to go to my Mariano’s, I got an enthusiastic “ME!” from both kids. The The Lakeshore East Mariano’s has a beautiful patio with a view of downtown Chicago buildings. Mariano’s is not your typical grocery shopping experience. It’s a fun family field trip and you don’t even realize you are crossing an errand off the list. What a fun day shopping at my Marianos! It’s the little things that make Mariano’s so fantastic. Chesney couldn’t get over the design of the carts. They even have a cup holder for mom’s coffee! That second look of awe on her face was caused by the sight of the homemade fudge. YUMMMMMM!

The Store for ALL Reasons

T

he Chicago winter was morphing into spring the first time I walked into Mariano’s. A dazzling still life of fruits and vegetables was a promise of pleasures to come. A plackard listed the day’s variety and organic produce selections–just the information picky customers, like me, are looking for. A blackboard proclaimed several interesting special events to come as a smiling, apron clad girl offered me a cup of fresh juice. These are but a few of the reasons that keep me coming back to Mariano’s.

By no means traditional, Mariano’s is indeed the essence of today’s modern grocery market; interesting enough to entertain the kids and husband, environmentally thoughtful, beautifully arranged groceries with a sprinkling of specialty food bars with everything you need to feed your family...and then some. The message promises and comittment delivers: “Shop Well. Eat Well. Live Well.”

I'd love to go to one of the wine and cheese pairings.

Shop Well. Eat Well. Live Well. “I have never been to a grocery store like this,” exclaims Jennifer Soltys. “Just so many tasty sections to explore!” At the popular juicing station, seasonal fruits and vegetables are juiced to order. Smoothies are also custom made to enjoy while shopping. Jennifer Evers says, “The first thing I saw once I entered the store was a Juicing Station where I could grab a smoothie!” Some shoppers appreciate the healthy snack option. “We immediately notice the Squeezed bar,” says Tricia Fandrey. A healthy start to grocery shopping is a plus.

But one might be just as tempted by tasty samples at the Coffee and Gelato Bar. Teresa Tiarastantrums jokes, “Off to the Vero gelato bar. This was the real reason we came today. Who are we kidding!” There are so many flavors to choose from, it is difficult to decide. “See how many great options there are? Sometimes we take a really long time, but the staff always lets my kiddos have as many samples as they like.” Fandrey says “Coconut was delicious!”

9

“We didn’t make it far. My daughter’s eyes immediately locked on the gelato and I gave in. I was thrilled that we could get a mini cone for $1! It was just enough gelato to make both of us happy and didn’t cost me a fortune,” says Sarah Bird. No detail is overlooked, even the design of the shopping carts is unique. “LOVE that there is a cup holder!” thrills Soltys. Just perfect to hold your juice, smoothie or coffee as you shop.

Learn While Your Shop Given all this excitement upon entering, one should not miss the learning experience shopping at Mariano’s can be. “The wee ones were awed, as well. From the young coconut (out of it’s shell) to the newly discovered donut peaches, it was as educational for the kids as it was fun.” The lusciousness of the grocery departments is apparent in every vignette. “As I do every time, I checked out the produce counts. It never fails to impress me. The sheer variety of produce Mariano’s carries is staggering,” shares Michelle Price. On this day 946 varities of fruits and veggies were available in the produce section...207 of them organic. I could keep the kids busy just finding all the fruits! Cynthia Wheeler exclaims, “The produce section was beaming with color. An indoor rainbow of organics.” Amanda Her says, “I love how Mariano’s displays their produce. So fresh!”

Mariano’s inspires you to be creative when cooking. “I’ve already thought of several different recipes I can make with the [many varieties of] potatoes,” shares Bird. From tiny, multi-colored fingerling potatoes to large sweet potatoes, I had never seen so many different potatoes in one place.

Walking in always makes me feel good. I adore seeing the produce count and check it out every time. Since I eat mostly whole foods, I love having options and seeing what’s new!

I usually look up the sales items online before I head to the store but I still like having the paper flyer when I’m actually shopping in the store. It was nice having one of their staff members there to hand it to me.

The sausage looks amazing because it is stuffed fresh on site. See a cut of meat that you don’t know how to prepare? Ask for it to be grilled for you while you continue to shop!

13

The seafood glistens from the cooler. “I’m a shrimp lover. Shrimp this fresh deserves lots of praise.” declares Natasha Taylor-Nicholes.

The meat and seafood departments intrigue me most. It offers an appealing selection. Vargas says “Mariano’s has the most beautiful cuts to offer. The varieties of meat and seafood always astonish me.”

Spring 2013

More Departments to Love “I’m kind of a cheese snob and when I saw Maytag blue cheese (which is made in my hometown), Mariano’s went even higher on my favorite grocery stores list,” adds Bird. Those who shy away from snacks will be tempted by bountiful displays filled with yummy sweetness. Homeade fudge, caramel corn, and almost every candy imaginable is here. Then you enter the land of the sugar plum fairy in the jaw-dropping bakery. “Obviously we were enamored with the bakery section, says Sara Bird. I was definitely impressed with their cakes. The prices were reasonable and the cakes looked [and tasted] great.” “As we were checking out, I soon realized the piano music was not piped over the loud speaker as there was an actual piano player!” says Bird. “Definitely not your typical grocery shopping experience.” Mariano’s is a handsome place to shop...open and inviting, filled with fresh foods displayed with artisan sensibilities. Who wouldn’t shop there if they could?

for busy Moms

M

oms today wear many hats. Sometimes the day is so busy it is hard to find the time to cook a nutritious meal. That is why our shoppers love Mariano’s Prepared Meals section.

“I recently took a trip to Mariano’s and my family has never been so satisfied by store bought, take-home food, ever! My first trip to Mariano’s Fresh Market blew my mind,” raved Sarah Rae Vargas of Ravings By Rae. “When I stopped in front of the hot food, I was seriously surprised with how great the different options looked. Because I checked their website before heading to the store, I was familiar with the menu, so I had a good idea of what I wanted.” Mariano’s has more than 75 chef-prepared entrées, salads, side dishes and snacks along with authentic hand-pulled Italian-style pizzas; complete ready-to-eat, self-service meals; plus international favorites. Perfect meals in minutes — all you have to do is make up your mind which meal to choose!

“Mariano’s goes above and beyond in quality, freshness and variety,” continues Vargas. “My family hasn’t eaten that well in a long time. And having Mariano’s provide our dinner for the night, meant mommy had more time to get work done, without worrying about cooking.”

Between school, work, and other committments, these busy moms have discovered that Mariano’s is the new “go-to” spot for delicious food for busy nights.

Busy Mom, Allison Groen of Rosie Discovers enthuses, “If anyone thinks grocery shopping is a chore, then they haven’t stopped by a Mariano’s.” “Mariano’s is a great place to find all your favorite fresh ingredients. It’s one of my favorite places to pick up a special meal,” says Groen. “Seriously, it’s easy to go to Mariano’s for everything on my list. With their large fresh produce

section, I can easily pick out meal ingredients to help my family eat well, live well and shop well.” The shoppers loved the variety and the convenience of the meal solutions at Mariano’s. “I think every family has their food traditions and ours seems to be having pizza at least one night during the weekend,” continues Bogner.

My Mariano’s Magazine

“Mariano’s offers wood-stone fired pizzas that are fresh and filling,” she says. “For less than $20 I was able to get a hot, freshly cooked meal for our family. In less than five minutes, dinner was ready and we were eating.”

Michelle Price of Live and Move blog also raves about the Sushi Bar. Her kids enjoy watching the sushi being made and customizing their own rolls. “Needless to say, they were thrilled with their choices and

25

Bonger’s family also brings sushi home. “The sushi looked and tasted extremely fresh and the size of the roll wasn’t too big or small. After tasting this sushi, I would definitely pick some up to go. I’m always a little hesitant to buy sushi on the go but no longer. It tasted fresh and literally melted in my mouth.” couldn’t wait to eat them. Neither container of sushi lasted our car trip home, but I did make them at least finish shopping with me before eating - it was quite the incentive.”

“The pot pie was yummy!” states Kelly Carpenter of Kelly’s Lucky You. She also selected a lightly-breaded chicken, grilled vegetables and an edamame salad meal.

No Cooking Required If you are not inclined to prepare a meal, Mariano’s does it for you. There is such an appealing array of hot foods and readyto-cook food, both savory and sweet, you may never need to chop and dice again. Pre-made dishes providing quick easy meal options for busy Moms. From salads and salsa, to fresh fruit and olives, sandwiches and pizza, oysters and sushi, soup and BBQ, there is something to satisfy every taste bud. “Ready to eat sandwiches (as well as create your own) were available to grab a quick lunch,” Evers says. “We opted for the “Hot Foods On The Go” because everything looked so delicious and it was a cold day.”

“In just a few minutes in the microwave and I had a delicious meal.” She expected a grocery store in the center of the city to be small. “I couldn’t have been more wrong. Mariano’s is quite large, yet at the same time, has a neighborhood feel.” Carpenter thinks the word friendly is her best description of Mariano’s vibe. “The staff seemed not only ready, willing, and able to help; they were happy to help.” She really liked that they were greeted by a cheerful, friendly young woman upon entering the store. The Vargas’ family enjoys the Chicken and Dumpling soup. “This was the talk of my home the whole day. We seriously couldn’t believe how amazing it tasted. I can’t even describe it to you, you have to try it!” The busy Moms love to have a place where they can pick up something different for each family member. There were so many mouth-watering selections, you can pick a bit of this and bit of that. At Mariano’s you are able to try many different things instead of being limited to one full sized entree. a

The truffles recipe requires four ingredients (5 for my version) and it's the perfect color for a St. Patrick's Day treat. The recipe calls for a food processor and I don’t have one so I crushed the cookies in blender and mixed it with the cream cheese by hand. I couldn’t find almond bark so I subbed with white chocolate. I also couldn’t dunk them with a skewer without them turning to mush. Instead, I drizzled on the colored white chocolate and topped it off with green sugar crystals. I bought all of my ingredients at Mariano’s here in Chicago. This was my first time visiting even though there’s a location less than 15 minutes away. Since this was a new adventure for me, I wandered around while looking for my supplies. This store has everything! I love that there were so many options available including products from around the world and local brands. I don’t eat vegan anymore but I still buy meatless and dairy free products when I can find them. There was a great selection available plus a huge selection of fresh vegetables.

One of my all time favorite spanish dishes is ceviche. I craved this stuff so much when I was pregnant. It’s usually made from raw white fish, but you can easily substitute tiny little salad shrimp if you’re not ready to eat this daring little dish. Some people can’t understand how the fish/ shrimp is considered cooked. The lime juice really does ‘cook’ the fish/ shrimp in only about 10 minutes. Ahh the wonderful world of food. During my recent trip to Mariano’s, I was once again blown away by the amazing selection and awesome prices. I’m super duper picky when it comes to the beef and seafood that I buy. The seafood selection is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I was glad to get my hands on some tasty shrimp for my Cinco de Mayo Ceviche. See more of Sarah’s delicious recipes on her blog.

Blueberry Stuffed French Toast

Place cream cheese in medium sized microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 15 seconds to soften. Add jam, stir well. Fold in fresh blueberries, set aside. In a shallow pie plate or bowl, whisk together eggs and milk, set aside. Pour cornflakes in a zip bag and crush the cereal into a fine meal. Pour this into another shallow pie plate. Assemble 4 ‘sandwiches’ by placing about 1/3 cup of the blueberry filling between two slices of bread. Dredge each sandwich in egg mixture, coating both sides well. Coat both sides of each sandwich with the crumb mixture. Melt butter in large skillet. Place stuffed sandwiches in skillet. Cook over medium-low heat until golden brown (1-2 minutes per side). Transfer to a warm platter and cook the other sandwiches. Garnish with strawberries and powdered sugar. Serve with homemade blueberry sauce or syrup if desired.

I love to create new recipes and share great places to shop. Recently I discovered great things about Mariano’s, which inspired me to create some new recipes using blueberries. I’m often asked where I get my recipes or how I come up with new ones. I see an ingredient on sale or a beautiful display at the store and think, I really need to make something with that. In this case, I saw blueberries on sale and thought it might be fun to create a Red White and Blueberry breakfast! Off to Mariano’s for additional inspiration! Since the frozen organic blueberries and fresh blueberries were priced really well, I decided to create a recipe for a Blueberry Stuffed French Toast using blueberry jam to really kick up the blueberry flavor.

I think it’s safe to say that our family is hooked on peaches. We’ve enjoyed them in peach crisp, raw and sliced, but I’ve been wanting to figure out how to grill and serve them with dinner. Peach season is starting up, so now’s the time to try it! Last time we went to Mariano’s, a local grocery store in the Chicagoland area, I was really impressed by their produce selection. We recently returned to look for new varieties of peaches. And MAN, did they ever! We picked three different kinds: ‘saturn,’ ‘donut,’ and regular yellow peaches. I decided to cut them and make honey butter grilled peaches. The recipe is super simple.

As soon as I spotted the blueberries at Mariano’s, I knew I wanted to include them in my cake recipe. ? Ever since I saw the poke cake idea on Pinterest, I had been eager to try it. I decided that lemon pudding might be delicious along with the blueberries. Yep, I was right! I have seen this cake done with Jell-o or pudding. The possibilities are really endless.

Blueberry Lemon Poke Cake Bake cake as directed (I recommend mixing the blueberries in the batter). Poke holes into semi-cooled cake; holes should be about 1 apart. Make pudding as directed. Pour pudding over poked cake before the pudding fully sets. Place pudding-topped cake into refrigerator for about 20 mins. Serve as is, or scrape a bit of the pudding off and frost.
