Idea 3- exam outcomes. With my third and final idea, I wanted to experiment with light more, because this was something that I had enjoyed doing in idea 2. I plan to use different sources of light such as fairy lights, sparklers and torches. I also would like to draw on top of my own photos using photoshop, because drawing is something that I enjoy doing and I think I could tie it in well with my photos.

Final 3…

Exam evaluation I wanted to start my exam project by taking pictures of people instead of objects or landscapes because it is something I had not done before. I thoroughly enjoyed this new experience because it meant that I could edit my photos differently and use a wide range of techniques when developing my photos. My first initial idea was to go to a completely new place with my model (my younger sister) and take some photos of her through the trees and branches in a forest. However this idea did not work out very well, so I decided to take some photos of her face when my camera had the shutter open for a long time, so that the photos came out blurred. This was to achieve the exam title being “covert and obscure. By blurring out her face, this obscures her facial features. I think my initial photographs of my sister could be improved, so I re-photographed her, inside instead of outside, due to the weather conditions were terrible. It made it difficult to take good photos. Nevertheless, I think the photos I ended up with definitely showed the idea I was trying to convey. I used the photos of her face when it was out of focus, then juxtaposed them with photos of her face in focus. This created a variety of different hues and scary looking images and the possibilities of the different combinations were endless. I particularly love the grainy effect the out of focus photos gave the other photos- it made them look even more obscured. I think they could be improved by making the photos a little less white washed and more naturally coloured.

Exam evaluation (continued) For my second idea, college offered to take us on a trip to central London so that we could take photos, so I decided to go. We went at night so the atmosphere was quite gloomy and the pictures therefore came out looking the same way. I took photos of blurred people and light sources (mostly street lights, and light bulbs.) I used several different techniques including zooming the lense in and out whilst the photo was being taken, and moving the camera slightly whilst the photo was being taken. I love the outcomes of these photos in particular; they are much like light paintings because it seems as though the sources of light move when it’s only the camera. I think my first idea is more successful because I have made my photos look more abstract and I think that I will probably get a higher mark for that, however I personally like the second set more because I enjoyed taking the light painting photos and seeing the outcomes of them. In the 8 hour exam, I took a new set of photos to develop, this time using myself as my own model. This was achieved by putting the camera on a timer. I knew I wanted to take photos of people because I had enjoyed doing so with my first idea and I thought that instead of asking anyone else I could just take photos of myself- if they came out terribly awful I would be to blame. I also wanted to incorporate the light painting idea from my second idea into my final outcomes and so that is what I ended up doing. Claire Shakespeare was the first artist I found that linked to my work. In the images I found, I saw that she blurred out the faces of people to an extent that I couldn’t make out the facial features anymore. I loved this technique because I thought it fitted in perfectly with our exam title and so I took a lot of inspiration from that picture to use in my own first set of photos and eventually my last set, too. I also researched into an artist called Linus Richard- he also takes photos where people’s faces and movement are blurred out The second artist I found was Jason D. Page. He is well known for his beautiful landscape light painting photos and I thought I could incorporate some ideas from his work into my own work. He usually uses big bold lines of light and I thought I could do the same, however on a much smaller scale and with the light that was already available instead of creating my own. I used a variety of different experiments when developing my photos including ripping and re-photographing, using projections, layering acetates and digitally editing on photoshop. I feel as though I definitely pushed my creative boundaries because I used new experiments throughout the project and in my actual exam. I have also liked most of the outcomes of the creative procedures so I feel that they were successful.
