DEVELOPMENT BOOKLET REBEKAH HOLLINS

After focusing on work from the Designer Republic I began to consider how it is possible to deconstruct the architecture of the city and ways in which this could work to my benefit. I compiled a series of images from both Huddersfield and Sheffield and focused on the smaller geometric elements of the architecture, breaking it down into simple shapes which I could later work with. In the style of Armelle Caron I then decided to lay out the shapes I had collected so that they were easily visible for me to continue working and developing. Here I have shown an example of this and have included shapes to the left that I have collected from the image above, I continued this process with many of the images, creating some really interesting results.

I also considered the works of Caroline Grohs and used it to simplify this image into simple geometric shapes. I began by focusing on the outline of the image and then bit by bit I disected the image into a series of shapes which I then coloured according to the areas of highlight and shadow in the original image. I think this worked really well and am very happy with the result.

Continuing to work in the style of Armelle Caron, I decided to deconstruct a map of Huddersfield into simple shapes. To do this I took a series of approaches including higlighhting all of the destinations I had visited, as well as all of the shops and resteraunts in Huddersfield. After I had highlighted these points I began to connect the dots and create a series of triangles in doing so, with each map I connected them differently, on the first map I connected the points only once whereas on the second map I connected each point to every other point. This created a very hectic result and I much prefer the first example. I noticed that on each map, the smaller triangles demonstrated areas with the most shops and therefore the most populateed areas, this could be viewed as a form of information graphics and I feel that this may be a possible approach in presenting my final ideas.

After filling the shapes found in each process of deconstruction, the smaller shapes found in the maps along with the more detailed shapes in the images become much more crisp and defined. I then began to notice that as the shapes are fitted together they create different patterns and effects, I decided to play around with this a little more.

SO WE HAVE SOME SHAPES

NOW WHAT?

It was obvious that some of the shapes found in the images that I disected were not parallel and did not fit together as well as I would’ve liked. I decided to use them as an influence and begin to straighten up the lines and move them around, fitting them together in a variety of different ways. I think that this worked out much more effectively in the end as the shapes worked together to create a more powerful piece overall rather than the composition shown at the top which lacked the stronger qualities.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

COLOUR SHAPE PATTERN

In the previous pages, I began to add colour to the images without really consdiering the kinds of mood I wanted to portray. The designs worked, but were not as effective as I would’ve liked. I decided to think about the different moods that Huddersfield portrays and, through colour, try and portray this. I decided that Huddersfield was comprised of several different feelings and atmospheres. The city is surrounded by nature and is at the centre of a remote countryside, I felt that this gave Huddersfield a sense of freedom and thought that this would be best represented by the colour green. Secondly I decided to consider the nightlife and buzz of Huddersfield, I felt that it was packed with energy and excitement along with joy and fun. I chose orange to represent these feelings as I felt that it best demonstrated the power and verve of the city. Huddersfield is a very social and friendly place, filled with passion and love. I find it difficult to walk through a street without someone talking to me and I chose the purple and pink colours to represent this social and loyal atmosphere that Huddersfield portrays. Finally is the peaceful and tranquil nature of Huddersfield, although it can be considered hectic and exciting. Huddersfield always has an aura of peace and tranquil that surrounds it. I though blue best represent this as it gives off a sense of calm and relaxation. I created a series of examples that represented how I might combine these colours with certain shapes to add a mood to the design, for example I combined the energetic red and orange colours with a more spiky design which gave a sense of power and explosion.

WHAT WORKS BEST?

I felt that the designs which were most effective were those with one key word which is then described below it in a smaller pt size. I think that it is impotant that the text does not divert the attention of the viewer as the key aim here is to express the feelings and atmosphere through the use of shape and colour, for this reason I felt that the overlay filter allowed the text to be present, but not overpower the design. Obviously some of the designs work better than others, and it is possible to experiment with a huge variety of words and type combinations. However I feel that my outcomes must be minimal interms of type and also fit well into the grid layout to mimic the geometric style of the designs.
